Help us Kick-Off the NEW season of the Gallery Ladies 9-Hole League on November 11th!

Any female Golf, Sports Club or Sports Club PLUS member is welcome to play with us! The Ladies 9-Hole League is a fun-experience for golfers of ALL skill levels, whether you are an established player or still learning (like Jenny)! Our goal is to have fun, play a little golf, and make new friends!

The Ladies 9-Hole League meets every Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. As we work to build our group, we want to remind everyone that the Ladies 9-Hole League does not require a major commitment - if you can’t join us every Tuesday, that’s ok!

The Gallery Canvas Paul Ellwood Superintendent Although we had to work around numerous rain events, our fall overseeding this year has been very successful. Over the next month we will be applying both granular and liquid fertilizer applications, which will favor rapid development of the individual plants into superior golf playing conditions. Once the weather cools down, we will also spray charcoal, which will attract additional sunlight to enhance turf development. The sooner we achieve high turf density, the sooner we will be able to lower the heights of cut on the fairways.

This year, head professor Dr. David Kopec with UA Turf Management Program asked if he could conduct his annual overseed research program at The Gallery (bottom photo). I have personally known Dr. Kopec for over 25 years and all of our past 4 assistant superintendents studied and received their Turf Management degrees under his direction.

Naturally our answer was, “How can we help?” He needed approximately 10,000 SF of fairway and 6000 SF of rough that would not be in high traffic areas, while remaining within normal golf maintenance conditions. Whatever we do to maintain our turf would also be done to the test areas. I chose the south side of #1 Gallery South. It is in close proximity for his visits and the checkerboard pattern of the emerging plots will not be an aesthetic nuisance to our facility. Since there are numerous turf varieties included in the 3 x 3 SF plots, there will be obvious variations in growth, density, and color. The tests include perennial ryegrass lines, perennial ryegrass blends, hybrid ryegrasses, turf type annual ryegrasses, and new species which tolerate high levels of irrigation and soil salts.

The tests will conclude by next June at which time it will be mechanically removed along with the rest of our ryegrass overseed.

The two grass trials (fairway and rough height of cut) is designed to evaluate the most recently developed seeded materials for tee, fairway, and rough overseeding. Each variety appears 4 times in each test so the true performance value of each may be determined.

This ‘replication’ allows for valid comparisons of an entry’s performance verses the others.

These annual tests conducted by Dr. Kopec have led to the use of endophyte containing ryegrass (which repel above ground feeding insects) and proper overseeding rates for fairways (which offer both good fall establishment as well as good spring transition back to Bermuda). They also assist in identifying the successful use of herbicides for ryegrass removal in the spring (quick transition back to Bermuda grass) and the use of hybrid ryegrass for sports turf. He will be out numerous times this season to inspect their progress.

When taking your second shot off the fairway on #1 Gallery South, look to the south and you can quickly identify the test plots. They will become more pronounced as the Bermuda grass goes dormant.

I’m sure it will be fun to use, but I just can’t get enough of traveling through the tunnel and seeing the visual improvement from before! Now that the task of overseeding is complete, we will continue detailing the courses to improve your winter golf season.
