Carol and I played this beautiful Troon course (Pronghorn) outside of Bend, OR last Saturday and had a ball. That night we saw Bill and Judy Rodman when we both dined at the same restaurant. Small World.

Get a Grip Congratulations to Carrie Kerth for her recent eagle on #7 of the South Course. When Carol Snell sent the picture, she commented “must have been the new grips”. Ha-ha! We all know Mrs. Kerth works on her game, but having good grips certainly helps!

Who needs new grips? - Now is a great time to get them done!

Aerification Paul Ellwood June 24, 2015 Although we were recently closed on the Gallery North for two weeks, there was no shortage of activity. We used this opportunity to do some very extensive and invasive work. That is, the greens, tees, fairways and roughs were aerified wall-to-wall. Aerification is a much-dreaded task that is hard on the workers and disruptive to players. The playing surface is mechanically perforated and the removed cores are either placed on the surface or removed. Why do we do it? There are two differing answers, for the greens and for all the remainder of the turf.

Like any other plant, grass plants are composed of organic material that is deposited on the soil surface after a leaf or other part dies. Think of a pasture covered with grass and weeds. As the plant parts fall to the ground, new plant parts replace them. The organic material in the dead tissue falling to the ground partially decomposes and the products of that decomposition add quality to the chemical and physical characteristics of the soil.

If you dig a hole in an old pasture, you will see the native soil at the bottom of the hole, while near the surface, the soil will look black. The black substance is decomposed organic matter that has accumulated over time. This black layer at the surface is high quality and highly valued “topsoil�.
