Welcome!

On behalf of our owner, John MacMillan and the MacMillan family, our 700+ members and 185 associates here at The Gallery, it is our privilege to be your host for the 2014 Troon Cup. We look forward to 3 great days of golf, some good ‘ol Wild West fun and hope you enjoy all that The Gallery and Dove Mountain have to offer.

Of course there is a golf tournament to be played and we are excited for you to test your skills on our 2 amazing golf courses. The North Course, designed by John Fought and Tom Lehman, wanders through the canyons of the Tortolita Mountains providing some breathtaking vistas and truly memorable golf holes.

Our South Course, host of the 2007 and 2008 Accenture World Match Play, tested some of the best players in the world and will provide a unique challenge to you and your team with its shaved approaches and lightning fast greens (and oh yeah, Tiger won here). Once on the course you will quickly notice that Agronomy is one of the pillars of our Club and Superintendent Paul Ellwood and his team have prepared the ultimate canvas in our stunning desert setting for you to craft your own masterpiece. And what would a Troon Cup be without the food! Food and Beverage Director John Calderon, Executive Chef Brian Steiner and our culinary team have prepared an amazing menu for the event and I can assure you, you will not go hungry over the next 3 days.

Again, it is my pleasure to welcome you to The Gallery and Dove Mountain. Our members are a family of friends who call The Gallery their second home, and we want you to feel the same way. If there is anything I or any of our team can do for you during your stay, please just let us know. The Gallery Golf Club TUCSON REGION The Place to Be Since 1200 B.C. It’s no accident that the Tucson region is home to more than a million residents and host to more than 7 million visitors a year. There’s something magical about this place where the Santa Cruz and Rillito Rivers converge, where five mountain ranges form a protected valley, and where majestic saguaros stand guard on the desert floor while aspen and pine whisper high above them on the mountain peaks.

Early History of the Tucson Region Located in Southern Arizona, Tucson was founded on August 20, 1776—an event celebrated annually at Tucson’s birthday party, La Fiesta de San Agustín. But people had long before felt something special here and made it their home. In fact, the area we call Tucson is one of the oldest continually inhabited areas in North America.

Hohokam Indians lived and farmed here for 4,000 years before Spanish missionaries and soldiers arrived in the late 1600s and eventually established the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson and the Mission San Xavier del Bac—the two most iconic and historic structures in the region. “The Old Pueblo,” as the adobe-walled Presidio became known, remains Tucson’s nickname to this day.

Tucson in the 1800s Then a part of Mexico, Tucson officially became part of the United States in 1854, just years before the start of the 1860 to 1880 “Old West” era of clashes among cattle ranchers, settlers, miners, and Apache Indians throughout the Southwest.

In 1877, the city was incorporated, making Tucson the oldest incorporated city in Arizona, and with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, Tucson’s multicultural roots expanded and deepened as new residents adopted customs of the Tohono O’odham Indians and Mexicans living here.

Tucson Geography Tucson is set in a valley of the Sonoran Desert surrounded by five mountain ranges. A trip from the 2,389-foot valley floor to the 9,157-foot Mt. Lemmon summit along the Catalina Highway-Sky Island National Scenic Byway traverses seven of the world’s nine life zones—the span of ecosystems you’d see driving from Mexico to Canada.

Troon Cup 2014 The city is bordered on all sides by protected natural areas: Coronado National Forest, Catalina State Park, Ironwood Forest National Monument, and Saguaro National Parks East and West (among the best places to see the giant saguaro cactus native only to Southern Arizona and Native Mexico).

Tucson Climate Boasting an average 350 sunny days a year and warm dry air, Tucson’s climate is ideal for year-round outdoor recreation, with winter temperatures reaching average highs of 64-75°F. Summer days are often hot with low humidity—great for indoor activities like museums, art galleries, and shopping or relaxing indoor or poolside at one of the area’s world-famous spas or resorts. Cool mornings and evenings and long twilights throughout summer are great for cookouts, patio dining, and activities like hiking and horseback riding.

Tucson Today The second-largest city in Arizona and the county seat of Pima County, Tucson neighbors the towns of Marana, Oro Valley, Catalina, South Tucson (an independent municipality in the heart of the city), Sahuarita, Vail, and Green Valley.

Tucson is home to the University of Arizona—established as Arizona’s first university in 1885 and now a campus of 50,000 students and staff from around the world— and a number of annual events drawing participants and spectators from around the world, including the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Tucson Rodeo), Tucson Festival of Books, Tucson International Mariachi Conference, the El Tour bike race, and the Tucson Classic.

Tucson, Arizona, grew out of the dangers, opportunities and cultural crossings of the Old West. Today, that heritage shapes us without limiting who we are: a destination for nearly 7 million visitors a year; a place known for outstanding hiking and outdoor adventures, rich cultural traditions, a vibrant arts scene, world-class golf and great dining; and a thriving desert home to more than 1 million residents.

About Us

Golf Courses The Gallery Golf Club features two highly acclaimed courses offering members and guests the finest in desert golf. Keeping your focus is a challenge on the picturesque North Golf Course with sweeping views of the high Sonoran desert landscape. Subtle elevation changes and views in all directions among thousands of giant saguaros provide members with an all-together different experience on the South Golf Course. The exceptionally maintained courses are set in a lush and natural desert environment and highly enjoyable for all skill levels.

The Grille The Grille is a visual masterpiece located in the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains with unparalleled views, décor, and cuisine. The Gallery’s award-winning Grille remains open to the public seven days a week with Lunch being served from 10am – 4pm and Dinner from 4-8pm. On Sundays, the Grille begins the day with a delicious Brunch complete with Omelet Station from 8am – 12pm. The Gallery Lunch menu features refreshing salads, hearty soups and a variety sandwiches. The Dinner menu offers a variety of seafood, mouth-watering steaks, and other unique entrees. We also have many house-made desserts to tempt you! Menu selections change seasonally.

Reservations are strongly recommended, as there are times when private member functions preclude our ability to accommodate other patrons.

Sports Club Our 12,000 square foot multi-purpose facility offers a complete line of state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Various programs are offered to meet the needs of our members, including golf-specific training, yoga, pilates, personal training, a wide variety of group exercise classes and much more!

Brian has been at The Gallery for 14 years and has a passion for creating and delivering great meals!

Our Golf Courses

The Gallery is a privately-owned, non-equity club. Amenities include: the acclaimed Gallery North Course designed by Tom Lehman and John Fought, The Gallery South Course which opened to national golf press accolades in December 2003, a 28,000 square foot award-winning Clubhouse with Southwestern casual elegance and The Gallery Sports Club which opened in January 2005. All are carefully placed into the natural and incomparable high Sonoran Desert setting.

North Course The Gallery’s North Course, designed by John Fought and British Open Champion and 2006 Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman, is ranked #1 in Southwest Arizona by Golf Digest and is acknowledged as one of Golfweek’s Top 100 Modern Courses. And, no wonder. Sweeping High Sonoran views distract in every direction as the nines meander through two rugged canyons. The result is 18 irresistible holes as enjoyably playable for the higher handicap golfer as they are challenging for the touring professional.

South Course The Gallery’s South Course makes The Gallery one of the few private clubs in the country featuring two highly acclaimed golf courses. Nominated one of Golf Digest’s 100 Best, John Fought’s Gallery South Course differs from The North Course in both terrain and architectural scheme. Its links style is reminiscent of Donald Ross’ Pinehurst #2. The South Course hosted the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship in 2007 and 2008.

Eugene ‘Cush’ Cayton The Original Dove Mountain Resident

Troon Cup 2014 Eugene Cayton was born in Odesssa, Missouri on November 14, 1905. His mother and father called him Eugene’ but when he was a youngster he acquired the nickname “Cush” so to his brothers, cousins and friends, he was Cush.

He was known for burning a candle at both ends but developed some health problems and his doctor recommended a sanatorium. But he said, “no, I’m going to Arizona!”

He borrowed some money from an uncle and bought a brand new Model T Ford roadster. The agent that sold him the car said he had spent some time in Tucson in Sabino Canyon. Cush and his brother, Sam, ended up in Sabino Canyon. His brother stayed a month and Cush two years. In his second year there he worked for the Flying V Guest Ranch wrangling dudes. Much of his job was driving ranch guests to Nogales.

In those days there was a lot of government land around Tucson. Since Cush ‘had’ to live outdoors, he decided to apply for a section of land for stock raising and try to build it into a small ranch. Cush had asked an engineer who surveyed land (Phil Contzen), for a piece of property that was on the south slope of some mountains within fifteen or twenty miles from Tucson, where water could be developed. His engineer knew of such a place – Rueles Canyon in the Tortolita Mountains.

The engineer’s son took Cush to see the land. He was very pleased and filed a claim on it and moved here. He took ownership of the surveyed land but could only claim the un-surveyed land by ‘squatters rights’ so he built his camp on the land dividing the two. When Phil and Cush parted ways, Phil told Cush, “Mr. Cayton, one of these days this land will be one of the most beautiful spots in the Tucson area. He was right!

Cush came to Arizona early enough to know and make friends with quite of a few old-timers who played a part in the winning of the west – and not always the good guys.

Somewhere in the saga, Cush met a girl named Inez Harper, who was living next to the Flying V Guest ranch in Sabino and they married October 22, 1931. They called the ranch the T Bench Bar. The brand was Inez’s initials when stood on end. The T Bench Bar wasn’t very large as ranches go, but it took care of the Caytons.
