SWELL OF LIGHT

Jimi Gleason, Shane Guffogg, and Andy Moses

Light, in this exhibition, is not a fixed form but a condition in flux. It constantly emerging, dissolving, and re-forming. Like the swell of the ocean, it gathers, lingers, and disperses, moving across time and space

Swell of Light brings together three California-based artists— Jimi Gleason, Andy Moses, and Shane Guffogg —to explore how light shifts through nature, time, and perception. While each artist has developed their practice along a distinct trajectory, they are loosely connected through a shared sensibility shaped by California’s environment and the artistic lineage of the Light and Space Movement.

Across the exhibition, their works begin from subtle transformations found in the ocean, the sky, and the passage of time Yet these are not representations of landscape, but investigations into how perception itself takes form. What matters here is not what is seen, but how it changes, how it lingers, and how it disappears

Each artist approaches this inquiry through a different perceptual axis: duration, motion, and reflection.

Jimi Gleason explores reflection and surface as a means of spatial perception.Working with metallic materials, his paintings do not simply contain light, but actively engage their surroundings, incorporating the viewer’s movement into the work itself His visual language—marked by banded structures across the surface—draws in part from photographic framing, particularly the immediacy of Polaroid imagery Influenced by experiences ranging from surfing to aviation, his work expands the viewer’s awareness of horizon, atmosphere, and spatial depth.

Shane Guffogg’s paintings center on the persistence of light—on time as something that accumulates and remains Color, in his work, functions not merely as a visual element but as a trace of layered duration. Built through successive strata, his surfaces hold the residue of light, suspended between presence and disappearance Rather than capturing a fleeting moment, his work invites contemplation of how a moment extends, deepens, and endures. His paintings evoke a non-linear sense of time in which past and present coexist, allowing memory to surface and recede within the same visual field. It is an approach that resonates with the temporal sensibility found in the poetry of T S Eliot, where time is not sequential but continuously reconfigured.

Andy Moses approaches light through material and movement. Deeply informed by the dynamics of the ocean, his process involves the controlled flow and rotation of paint across the surface As pigment moves, so too does light, shifting with the viewer’s position and dissolving any fixed image His works embody a sense of fluid energy, translating natural motion into a visual experience in constant transformation.

Though working across different dimensions—time, material, and space—the three artists converge in their attention to a shared condition: the moment before form fully settles It is a state in which experience gathers, perception sharpens, and meaning begins to emerge This exhibition does not seek to capture that moment, but to remain within it—to trace the process through which it comes into being and dissolves again. It is within this shifting field that distinct rhythms and temporalities intersect.

These currents ultimately converge within a single place Each artist, at different moments, has passed through New York, carrying away impressions that remain embedded within their work. These experiences do not appear directly, but linger subtly within the surfaces and structures of the paintings

Swell of Light marks the return of these accumulated sensibilities to the city At the intersection of California’s atmospheric conditions and NewYork’s lived experience, light, time, and memory are reconfigured and felt anew.

JIMI GLEASON

United States, 1961

Jimi Gleason is a contemporary artist whose work explores the dynamic interplay between light, material, and perception. Born in Newport Beach, California, Gleason studied fine arts at UC Berkeley, graduating in 1985. His artistic journey began with studies in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute and work as a photo assistant in New York City Upon returning to California, he spent five years working in the studio of renowned artist Ed Moses, an experience that profoundly shaped his understanding of abstraction and materiality

Gleason’s paintings are celebrated for their luminous, reflective surfaces created through a meticulous and labor-intensive process His primary medium, silver nitrate, is applied using techniques inspired by industrial processes This approach connects his work to the legacy of the West Coast Minimalist and Light & Space movements, which explored the intersection of art, technology, and perception The result is a body of work that transcends the boundaries of traditional painting, engaging viewers in an immersive, ever-changing experience

The reflective surfaces of Gleason’s works are activated by light and the viewer’s presence, creating a dynamic interaction that is central to his artistic vision His paintings echo the alchemical principles of transformation, offering a meditative space where materiality and the ephemeral coexist Gleason’s work invites viewers to explore themes of duality and connection, where the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical dissolve.

Over his career, Gleason has exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Hammer Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Tucson Museum of Art. His work is included in significant public and private collections worldwide, earning him recognition for his innovative approach and technical mastery.

SHANE GUFFOGG

United States, 1962

Shane Guffogg is an internationally celebrated contemporary painter whose abstract works bridge the emotive depth of classical traditions with the innovative spirit of modern abstraction Born in California’s San Joaquin Valley in 1962, Guffogg grew up surrounded by vast landscapes and open skies that profoundly shaped his artistic vision

Guffogg’s style is defined by intricate layers of translucent oil paint, meticulously applied in a glazing technique that creates depth and luminosity. His paintings feature rhythmic, looping forms that seem to flow endlessly, evoking the sensation of movement and infinity. The works often oscillate between sharp clarity and soft diffusion, inviting viewers into a contemplative interplay between light, color, and form. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio, as well as Abstract Expressionists like Mark Rothko, Guffogg’s works transcend time and tradition, resonating with universal themes of perception, spirituality, and transformation.

In 2024, Guffogg presented a landmark solo exhibition titled At the Still Point of the Turning World –Strangers of Time at the Scala Contarini del Bovolo in Venice, Italy This exhibition, aligned with the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, showcased 21 new paintings inspired by T S Eliot’s Four Quartets Through this series, Guffogg explored the interplay of time, memory, and migration, weaving themes of transience and permanence into his work Notably, the exhibition incorporated augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI), offering viewers a multisensory experience that deepened their connection to the paintings

ANDY MOSES

United States, 1962

Andy Moses is a celebrated contemporary artist known for his luminous, abstract works that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and light-filled landscapes of Southern California, which continue to influence his work

Moses’ work is defined by its exploration of light, color, and form, often utilizing unconventional techniques and materials His intricate process involves manipulating paints mixed with metallic pigments and industrial coatings, applied to curved or shaped panels The resulting surfaces are dynamic, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light These works invite an immersive experience, creating a dialogue between the observer, the artwork, and the environment

After moving to New York in 1982, Moses became part of the city’s burgeoning art scene, developing ties with artists like Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat During this time, his work reflected a fascination with geological forces and the macro/micro dynamics of nature In 2000, Moses returned to Los Angeles, where the unique coastal light and vast landscapes inspired a shift in his practice Incorporating elements of the Light and Space movement, he began experimenting with reflective surfaces and concave panels that expand the viewer’s perception of space and time.

Moses has exhibited internationally for over three decades, with his work featured in major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and the Orange County Museum of Art. His paintings are included in prestigious public and private collections worldwide, earning him a reputation as one of Southern California’s leading abstract artists.
