Greetings from the Artistic Director Welcome to a new season at Gallery 7 Theatre.

This is our 33rd consecutive season and over the course of the past three decades, we have presented over 110 productions of varying genres and styles, from sketch revues to plays from the Canadian and international canon, and from digital films to Broadway-style musicals.

Surprisingly, this is the first time we have walked alongside a playwright in the development and production of a script from start to finish.

Bringing A Tale of Two Cities to the stage has been a five-year journey for Abbotsford-based playwright, Adriel Brandt, and ourselves. During this time, many drafts were written as Adriel worked tirelessly to home in on the story he wanted to tell and the themes he wanted to explore. Readings were held, many conversations took place, and even more drafts were written.

Slowly but surely, through shear grit and determination, a script came into being that not only honoured the source material and satisfied Adriel but also appealed to a modern audience.

Once production commenced, additional changes were made as our director, Gabe Kirkley, joined the team and added his thoughtful insights. And now, here we are at the final phase of this script’s development: sharing this magnificent story with you through a full-scale production. Thank you for being a part of the journey! And thank you, Adriel, for approaching us with the idea to write a new play in the first place and for being a consummate professional and open-minded artist during the entire process.

I first encountered A Tale of Two Cities back in high school when I was in Grade 11. My English

teacher (looking at you, Mrs. Tweedle!) was an avid fan of Charles Dickens and some of that enthusiasm must have rubbed off on me. Over the years as Artistic Director here at G7, I often thought that A Tale of Two Cities, with its sweeping storyline, it’s dramatic context and its themes of sacrifice, love, family, and social welfare, belonged on our stage. How awesome is it that through a confluence of events and perhaps some divine intervention, we would have the opportunity to both expand our artistic mandate to include the development of new works and tell this important story at the same time.

A Tale of Two Cities continues to resonate today, and asks important questions: how far is too far?

Is revolution the only path to social change? Can we learn from the past and avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future? How do we address the social challenges of today? What does sacrifice look like? How does one love others amid social & political upheaval?

We hope you find exploring these big questions meaningful as you enjoy your theatre experience with us today. Thank you for being here as we celebrate the world premier run of this new play, and as we celebrate another first for us here at G7.

Director’s Notes Think about the French Revolution. For most of us, it has a distant, unfamiliar feel to it, doesn't it? Perhaps you know some vague facts about it from late night Wikipedia browsing. Maybe you have associations with a grade school class or university survey course. Or perhaps a film or book or musical that you love is set during the period.

Indeed, the world of A Tale of Two Cities seems very distant to us now: rising inequality, huge national debts from overseas wars, an uncontrollable economic crisis, collapsing banks, hardening borders, different sides of the political spectrum increasingly seeing each other as enemies, a perceived breakdown in social civility and order....Oh wait. Sorry. That does sound a bit familiar, doesn't it?

The past isn't as far away as we think it is and the people who lived it are not so different.

They thought like us and had hopes and dreams and friends and family like we do. In many ways, we are still thinking the same thoughts, even if we refer to things by different names or fly different flags. I've tried to carry that simple, powerful idea through this whole production.

Notes from the Playwright A Tale of Two Cities is a story of unfailing relevance.

It is tragically and beautifully timeless: 164 years after its first publication, the opening, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…in short, the period was so much like the present period," is as immediate as ever. It truly is the age of wisdom and of foolishness, of belief and incredulity, of hope and despair! Surely, those lines have never been more apt.

This story is endlessly translatable and intimately human: it tells of all our struggles—individually, as a community, and as a global body. We are the Manettes, urgently clutching to family; we are the Defarges, fighting against great injustice; we are Darnay, caught up in events beyond our power; we are Carton, desperately searching for meaning; and

Dickens, a reportedly good actor himself, wrote this deeply personal story about family and sacrifice in 1859 while performing in The Frozen Deep (a play about the lost Franklin Expedition in the Canadian Arctic). The start of the Revolution was about as distant to him then as the start of the Vietnam War is to us now. There were already two competing theatrical adaptations by 1860. Interestingly, both scripts entirely eliminated or changed the novel's ending (no spoilers!) to please their audiences. Thankfully our wonderful playwright Adriel Brandt hasn't done the same here.

Unlike those Victorians, I think we can handle it, can't we? After all, it was so long ago.

Andrew Potts

Andrew Abrahams (Jarvis Lorry) Andrew has performed in over 40 theatre productions.

Many of his performances have been for Gallery 7 Theatre such as Charlie in The Foreigner, Shadowlands (where he played CS Lewis) and as Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Andrew recently performed in The Magician’s Nephew and is now looking forward to performing in A Tale of Two Cities.

Brighton Bitz (Assistant Stage Manager) This is Brighton's first show with Gallery 7 Theatre but before this, she did theatre throughout high school as an assistant stage manager and crew head. Brighton has worked on shows such as Mamma Mia, Anne of Green Gables, and The Outsiders. She adores getting to work with so many amazing people and hopes you enjoy the show!

Adriel Brandt (Sydney Carton/Playwright/ Dramaturg) Adriel is an audiobook narrator, author, and tabletop game designer. Past acting credits include Eustace in Jeeves Intervenes, Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice, Giles Ralston in The Mousetrap, and Peter Pan in Peter Pan (G7).

Past audio credits include 1984, The Complete Chronicles of Narnia, and The Great Gatsby. Past writing credits include an original edition of Around the World in 80 Days and home, A Short Story collection. Adriel dedicates the script to the revolution - may we live to see it triumph - and each performance to Laura Marazzi.

Tamara Charman (Doctor Manette) Tamara started with Gallery 7 Theatre in 2007, performing as Aunt Gert in Lost in Yonkers. This time last year, she was in G7’s production of The Magician’s Nephew, and it has been wonderful working on A Tale of Two Cities with so many of the same people, as well as others with whom she’s worked in the past. Tamara is thrilled to be blessed with such a wonderful role, and thanks Adriel for his powerful script and Gabe for his masterful direction.

Pat Davis (Assistant Stage Manager) Pat began her theatre journey many years ago with Opening Nite Theatre. Her first contact with G7 was almost ten years ago when she had a part in The Hiding Place and later played Grandma Tzeitel in Fiddler

on the Roof. Over the last nine years, she has been an Assistant Stage Manager for about seventeen G7 shows and loved every minute of working with such talented actors. As usual, many hours of rehearsal time has been put into this classic tale so sit back and enjoy the show!

Dani DeJong (Costume Designer) Dani is pleased to be part of this first production of the season.

She has enjoyed working on several period pieces for Gallery 7 Theatre including The Secret Garden, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, Sense and Sensibility, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Genevieve Dougan (She/Her, Lucie Manette) Genevieve is beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a part of another Gallery 7 Theatre show.

Her thanks go to the wonderful directorial team, the crew, and the cast. Genevieve has performed in various other theatre companies over the years in shows such as The Magicians Nephew (G7), Tarzan, and The Sound of Music.

Rebecca Dougan (Ensemble/Jacques 2/Fight Captain) Rebecca is thrilled to be performing in this powerful story for you today alongside her sister! Past Gallery 7 Theatre credits include The Magician's Nephew (Digory), Around the World in 80 Days (Swing), Peter and the Starcatcher (Smee), and Reflections (Jesse). Thank you to Gabe and the crew for all your dedication and hard work to make this show a success! And thank you to Gabe for casting me in my first female role with Gallery 7 Theatre!

Nelly Fargeon (Stage Manager) Nelly has been working with G7 in multiple behind the scenes roles for several years now, but especially loves the challenge of stage managing. This is her first time co-stage managing and she would like to especially thank her partner, Michelle, for all her hard work! She would also like to thank the cast and crew of the show for all their efforts and for making her laugh and smile throughout the entire process. Finally, a huge thanks to the staff at G7 for their patience and tireless work, and all you patrons out there for helping to keep theatre alive! I hope you enjoy the show!

Gabe Kirkley (Production Director) Gabe is excited to be back directing at Gallery 7 Theatre again this season! He has a B.A. in History and an extended minor in Theatre from UFV, so tackling this epic show about the French Revolution was a real treat. Previous directing credits include: The Magician's Nephew (G7), Dinner With Friends (Theatre in the Country), Peter Fechter: 59 Minutes (UFV) and The Dumb Waiter (UFV). He's also done a lot of lighting/sound/projection designing and acting all around the Fraser Valley. Fun fact: this is the 75th production he's been a part of in 17 years. Yes, that's about 4.5 productions a year. In another world outside of theatre, Gabe is a software engineer for a tech company in Vancouver and spends his (way too limited) free time mostly reading and hanging out with his cat, Sephi. He'd like to thank Paige, the amazing cast & crew, Ken, Adriel, Thomas and especially all of you for coming!

Sophie Heinrichs (Ensemble/Seamstress) After three years, Sophie is incredibly grateful to be returning to the stage in such a moving piece. Recent credits include Margaret in Much Ado About Nothing (TIC), Libby in Blue Window (Douglas College), and Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (G7). Sophie studied theatre at Douglas College and is an aspiring Charles Dickens completist. She’d like to thank Gabe for his vision and leadership, Adriel Brandt for bringing these themes of division and redemption to life, and the audience, for continuing to support live theatre.

Veda Maharaj (Sound Designer) Veda (she/they) is a recent high school graduate from Langley Fine Arts, where she majored in theatre, and focussed almost entirely on technical theatre. Recently, she’s been a stagehand for Theatre in the Country, the technical director for the Leaping Thespians, and a Stage Manager for two consecutive years at LFAS. A current film major at Capilano University, Veda continues to pursue art and production as she aspires towards her BFA, as well as staying active within the Lower Mainland theatre community in her downtime.

Ken Hildebrandt (Artistic Director/Lighting Designer) Ken is the founding Executive/Artistic Director of Gallery 7 Theatre. In addition to managing the organization, Ken occasionally directs, acts, or does lighting design. Select lighting design credits include Hamlet (UFV), The Fantasticks, Mary’s Wedding, Pride and Prejudice, Last Train to Nibroc and This Wonderful Life. When not doing theatre, Ken enjoys announcing at air shows, going to the movies, and relaxing at home with friends or video games.

James Lam (Ernest Defarge/Dialect Coach) James Xavier Lam began his acting career in 2000 in the West End. He trained with the National Theatre, holds distinctions from LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic and Music Arts), and NODA (National Operatic and Drama Association), and worked as a resident actor for the BFI (British Film Institute) Academy. His most recent Canadian theatre credits include Simon Mostyn, Murder on the Nile (CPG), Christopher Wren, The Mousetrap (G7) amongst others. James dedicates this and every

Eldon Letkeman (Marquis/Jacques 3) Eldon is thrilled to return to G7’s main stage after a long hiatus. In the past year, he has had the privilege of participating in Shakespeare in Love and Catch Me If You Can: The Musical with Theatre in the Country.

Eldon also took on the roles of playwright and director for his original plays, Man of God and Space Junk, featured in G7’s Abby Theatre Fest.

With directing credits including Crossing Delancey, Around the World in 80 Days, and Peter Pan, and a history of performances in shows like The Fantasticks, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Death Of Dracula, Eldon is delighted to continue exploring the captivating world of theatre through this original and inspiring work.

Karis Miller (Miss Pross) Karis is honoured to be back for another show with G7! Last seen as The White Witch in The Magician's Nephew, she's excited to share the stage with new and old friends, and her heart throb of a husband, Marcus.

She'd like to thank Gabe, the director, for creating a safe and engaging environment as this play and role is a step out of her comfort zone. When not acting, Karis can be found DJing on Twitch and in the Fraser Valley as "DJ Lady Lindie"!

Marcus Miller (Charles Darnay) Marcus' first crack at theatre was portraying Humpty Dumpty in Xtreme Theatre’s Alice, Through the Looking Glass. He then scrambled back to the stage for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (XT), and several revue shows (XT Alumni, Golden Ears Theatre) before taking time to pursue film and video production. Most recently, Marcus starred in Gallery 7 Theatre’s The Magician’s Nephew as Uncle Andrew alongside his then fiancée, Karis.

Two magic rings later, they're loving the joys of marriage and are thrilled to perform together again in A Tale of Two Cities.

Shannon Tauber (Therese Defarge/ Hair and Make-Up Designer) Finally coming back to the stage after an almost 5-year hiatus, Shannon is extremely excited to help bring to life their amazing friend Adriel’s script. You may have last seen Shannon as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (G7) or Estelle in No Exit (TIC). They also costume designed for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (G7) and are currently designing for re:Naissance Opera. While still very early in their career, Shannon feels very privileged to have so many creative opportunities and is thrilled to see where life takes them next.

Andrew Potts (Set Designer) Andrew has designed and built several sets for Gallery 7 Theatre. Select scenic design credits include This Wonderful Life, Trying, and Jeeves Intervenes. When not occupied with the theatre, he works as a handyman. Thanks to the carpentry and painting volunteers that helped get these Two Cities off the ground and looking pretty!

Liam Whatley (Ensemble/Barsad) Liam returns to the stage for his third production with Gallery 7 Theatre, the first two being Murder on the Orient Express and The Secret Garden. Liam has also performed in Les Miserables, Anne of Green Gables, and The Tempest. Outside musical theatre, he has a Bachelor of Music majoring in Composition and performs on the guitar, piano, and voice.

Michelle Potts (Stage Manager) Michelle has been involved with G7 for 20 years. Her acting credits include: King/Lamplighter/Snake in The Little Prince (G7), Clara in The Boys Next Door (G7), Dwarf/Goblin General in The Hobbit (G7), Evil Dwarf in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (CBC), Alexandra in Cell 66 (Bethel). ASM credits include: The Magician's Nephew, A Wrinkle in Time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and To Kill a Mockingbird (G7). Michelle loves
