Greetings from the Artistic Director

Welcome to Gallery 7 Theatre and our annual Panic Squad and Friends comedy improv night. The last time we hosted Panic Squad in-person, we were staring down a virus we knew little about but could have a significant impact on our lives. That, and toilet paper was suddenly a hard to come by commodity.

Seriously, though, hosting Panic Squad is a long-standing tradition for us here at G7, and in the wake of the challenges we have all faced in the last couple of years, we’re thankful to continue this tradition with the triumphant return of the in-person version of this special event. I trust and hope you will enjoy a night of family-friendly, super-hilarious comedy improv. I think we could all use a good laugh as we seek healing and re-connection as a community.

We keep inviting Panic Squad back year after year, not only because we like them and they add a special something ‘extra’ to our theatre season, they also specialize in clean comedy, a breath of fresh air in the polluted atmosphere of popular entertainment. Comedy is hard to do at the best of times; it’s even harder to keep it out of the toilet. In fact, I would say true comedy avoids the bane and crude, and not everyone can do it well. Panic Squad is

an exception to the rule, and after tonight, I think you’ll agree too.

The Panic Squad & Friends show here at Gallery 7 Theatre is unique in that this is the only time and place in the Panic Squad schedule where the team performs with an expanded cast of performers. Not only does the G7 show allow the team to nurture emerging improvisers, it gives the team a chance to premier and test new games to see how they land with audiences. In some ways, you could see your participation during tonight’s performance as history-making, not only because you’re the first to see the game, but also because you have the opportunity to tell the team whether the new game is a keeper or not.

Enjoy this evening of good ‘ole fashioned fun. I hope you laugh a lot – and that we’ll see you at our next, and final production of the 2021-2022 ‘Engage’ Season, Holy Mo & Spew Boy by Canadian playwright, Lucia Frangione in May. Curtain up!

ABOUT PANIC SQUAD

The Panic Squad Improv Comedy combines exceptional comedic talent, a love for entertaining and a commitment to excellence to create a high quality, professional comedy show that is consistently Fresh, Clean and very Funny.

For twenty years, The Panic Squad has performed across the United States and Canada for hundreds of businesses, nonprofits, national conferences and top Fortune 500 corporations. They have appeared on CBC, CTV, JCTV, CBS and more and have performed for diverse audiences ranging from less than one hundred to over 35,000.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS…

PANIC SQUAD TEAM BIOS: Andrew Bright: Andrew started The Panic Squad Improv Comedy with some other TWU students in 1996. Andrew brings exceptional physical comedy and wit to the stage and relishes the challenge to act out impossible suggestions in our improv guessing games. In 2019, Andrew combined his passions for improv and leadership in publishing his first book, Improv Leadership – A Comedian’s Guide to Effective Leadership in an Unscripted Workplace and is available on Amazon. Andrew loves using improv to teach organizations how to move forward and lead well. In addition to acting and teaching, Andrew handles all the administration and management of The Squad. He lives in Lynden where he and his wife, Karla, raise their four children, ages 14, 10, 10, and 9.

Mike de Boer: Mike has performed with The Panic Squad for 10 years and is an all-around acting machine. He can sing, too. With a history in both improv and scripted acting, Mike does an excellent job creating rich characters and moving the scene forward. Mike currently lives in Vancouver. While Mike occasionally rocks the stage with The Panic Squad, his full time work is with Compassion Canada.

Ryan Kniel: Ryan is an UVIC improviser, actor, sound designer and pumpkin carving enthusiast. He is the coordinator of Vikes Improv, a comedy and narrative-based improv group based out of the University of Victoria.

Steven Krajnyak Steven is a bundle of wit and whip. He brings a physical energy to all of his characters and performances that delight the audience and the other actors. His witty references, trivia knowledge and subtle cultural tie-ins are Panic Squad legend.

Steven has performed with The Panic Squad Improv Comedy since 2007. He has also performed with Funny Brothers Improv and in a number of stage productions. When not lighting up the stage, Steven teaches grades 8-11 at Langley Fine Arts School where, no doubt, his improv abilities come into play. Steven lives in Coquitlam with his wife, Shantini, and their adorable 3-year-old son, Theodore.

John Voth John has been performing with The Panic Squad since 2010 and is an exceptional actor who excels in adding great character development and strong story lines to scenes he is a part of. Having studied acting at Trinity Western University and performed in a number of roles with a variety of respected theatre companies, including Pacific Theatre, the Vancouver Arts Club and Bard on the Beach, John has some serious acting skills.

He has also been a stand-out player in Trinity’s Improv League, 11:07, and Vancouver Theatre Sports Rookie League. John also speaks fluent German so he can talk about the rest of the team without them understanding. Sad thing is, no one else on the team speaks German, so he can only talk to himself. John currently lives in Vancouver, B.C. He talks to himself a lot…in German.
