Greetings from the Artistic Director We love stories. Stories are a pathway by which we pass along our history, and the way we share the lessons learned from that history. Stories entertain and they provide escape from the unrelenting responsibilities of everyday life. Stories are like parables, where metaphor and symbolism are used to explore and express ideas. Stories help us gain perspective on our human experience. They spark the imagination, inspire action, and bring reprieve. Some stories speak to us at a specific time and place. Other stories speak to universal truths that transcend time and space. Some stories speak to the heart, others to the mind, and still others, to the spirit. Great stories speak to all three. At the heart of every great play is a great story. Otherwise, what’s the use going through all the time, energy, and expense to tell that story in theatrical form? At the heart of Holy Mo and Spew Boy there are three great stories being told: there is the story of Moses, there is the story of King David, and then there is the umbrella story of three travelling jesters who want to share these Biblical stories
Why? Because they believe in the stories they are telling. They believe these stories contain intrinsic moral and spiritual value and must be shared. They believe that anyone listening to them could very well experience significant change in their lives, just as they have been changed, and continue to be changed, by these stories. But our storytellers also know the power of humour and how it allows their listeners to enter the story, to engage with it and to be inspired anew by it. They take a certain ‘artistic license’ and stumble upon new revelations that somehow make these Biblical stories of old relatable to our present experience. Ironically, or perhaps metaphorically, the humanity (i.e. ego) of our travelling troupe often gets in the way of telling the stories of Moses and King David exactly the way they’ve been traditionally told, perhaps inadvertently mirroring the existential experience of the Biblical characters in real-time. Through their quirky story-telling techniques and through their performance successes and failures, our thespians gain new insights on these stories of old, and each other, and their hearts, souls and minds are refreshed. By watching and listening, we as the audience experience the exact same thing. Holy Mo & Spew Boy could very well be considered a metaphor for the act of creating theatre: using the power of story and entertainment to express ideas and explore themes so we might gain new insights and fresh perspectives. We have dubbed this show ‘reverently irreverent’ but not because we’re
being disrespectful to traditional Bible stories. Quite the opposite: we’re reverently (read ‘respectfully’) looking at Biblical stories very near and dear to many in an irreverent (read ‘new’ and ‘different’) way so we can engage these stories anew…and perhaps be taken a little closer to the ACTUAL experience of Moses and David than we’ve ever been before. Holy Mo & Spew Boy is no stranger to G7 or to Canadian and US audiences. It appeared on our stage about 25 years (!!!) ago. The first part, Holy Mo, had already made the Fringe Festival rounds in 1994. Playwright Lucia Frangione wrote the second part, Spew Boy, soon after and reunited the beloved characters of Follie, Bufoona and Guff to tell the story of King David. The expanded version was presented at Gallery 7 Theatre and several other theatres across Canada starting in 1997. It starred Lucia, Erla Faye Forsyth and Anita Wittenberg. The show became a sleeper hit at G7 as audiences quickly learned of the play’s quirky, entertaining, and genuine heart.

Welcome to all friends and supporters of Gallery 7 Theatre to our last play of the season, Holy Mo and Spew Boy. I am definitely looking forward to this production. I am very pleased to see our audience numbers steadily increasing with each performance as it means we are gradually returning to something resembling the new normal.
In some ways, Holy Mo & Spew Boy is a celebration of all that Gallery 7 Theatre has been trying to do for over 30 years: tell engaging, entertaining, and thought-provoking stories that we care about and help us gain new understanding in our individual, social and spiritual experience.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your continued support of Gallery 7 Theatre as we continue to bring theatre to the lower Fraser Valley. We hope with Holy Mo & Spew Boy you will have an experience that is inspiring, uplifting and often lots of fun. Director’s Notes This irreverent take on the stories of Moses and David is part of the canon of Canadian and BC theatre. There is imagery from this show that pops up many places I go. When referenced, the people I meet talk about the time they saw Holy Mo or that they’ve heard of moments from this fun and clever play. So it was a bit daunting to sit down and try to find my way through, to find my journey through this story. But the magic thing, as I tell my students, is that theatre is ephemeral. It is never the same way twice. There is always a different cast and a different audience and that combination can never be replicated. So that was my deep breath moment before we started to find the voices for our Follie, our Bufoona and our Guff. Sometimes a director is more of a guide; their job is to just ask a well-timed question or point out a line that resonates in a particular way. And when things click, you just get to sit back and enjoy the work. It’s been a honour and a privilege to work with this team of artists. Everyone lifted each other up throughout and I was continually grateful for the creativity and the passion that was in the room. It has been a fabulous way to participate in my first production at Gallery 7 Theatre and I am grateful. Thank you for being here to join us on this adventure.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST & CREW
Maria Bamford (Vocal Coach/Music Coordinator) Maria is a singer, actor, and vocal coach of Japanese Canadian descent. She loves bringing new audiences to the worlds of live classical music and theatre. She has performed with Vancouver Opera, Opera NUOVA, and Disney Cruise Line. Maria has a thriving voice studio in Abbotsford and loves enabling her students to grow in the joy of performing. She is thrilled to collaborate with the team at Gallery 7 Theatre on Holy Mo and Spew Boy!
Nigel Brooke (Lighting Designer) Nigel began his theatrical career with a critically-acclaimed turn as ‘Tree’ and ‘Candy Cane’ in Hansel and Gretel at age five. More recently (and relevantly), he has designed lights for dozens of productions around the Lower Mainland, including Screwball Comedy, Alice in Wonderland and Blythe Spirit for the Royal Canadian Theatre Company, where he is also the resident lighting designer, Henry V for Stone’s Throw Productions / Pacific Theatre, Mary’s Wedding and The 39 Steps for Peninsula Productions, and many more. He is also one of the founding members of Shadows and Dreams Theatre Company, recently performing there as ‘Adriana’ in Comedy of Errors and ‘Mercutio’ in Romeo and Juliet. In real life, Nigel is a computer programmer, and, oddly enough, does this for “fun”. Charlene Crawford (Production Manager/Props Designer) A BA graduate from the TWU theatre program, Charlene has been telling stories on the stage for almost two decades. She has served as the company’s production manager officially for 5 years but was a volunteer and contract artist for many years before that. Charlene has performed, produced and designed during her career and is sad to see that some post-secondary institutions no longer value the contributions of theatre to society. She is thankful that you have chosen to come out to support the magic of live theatre.
Aaron Dawson (Live Stream Technician) Aaron is an awardwinning filmmaker located in Abbotsford. A graduate of Capilano University‘s Motion Picture Arts Program, Aaron has directed commercials, music videos, television series, a feature documentary, and narrative short films. Aaron is currently producing JOYRIDE on JoyTV and Beading Together, a podcast with Métis beadwork artist, Lisa Shepherd.
Dani DeJong (Costume Designer) Dani had been designing costumes for Gallery 7 Theatre for many years, but this time, she wanted to share her love for costume design with her textile students at Abbotsford Christian School. She challenged them to create the designs for our three clowns. Portia and Kendra, both accomplished sewers, saw the pomp in Follie; Anika and Mia, with exceptional creativity, saw the exuberance in Bufoona; and Dennica and Natasha, with efficiency and clarity, saw the pragmatism in Guff. They hope you enjoy their creations brought to life.
Stephen Elcheshen (Fight Choreographer) Stephen is a Hydrostatic Recertification Technician by day and theatre geek by night. As one of the founding producers of Shadows And Dreams Theatre Co, he can be found in the bandshell at Queen’s Park every summer in better times showing off his Shakespeare. Recent roles include Rev. Teller in Cariboo Magi (Far From The Tree) and Arthur, Sir Bors, and half the other characters in Spamalot (White Rock). When not on stage, he is often called upon as a Fight Choreographer, recently having worked on Spider’s Web (RCTC), A Wrinkle In Time (Gallery 7 Theatre), and We Are The Body (Pacific Theatre). As always, he’d like to thank his family for their love and support.
Lora-Lynne Frewing (Guff) Lora-Lynne has been involved in theatre for the past 20 years. However, you probably have not seen her much because she is usually backstage. This is only her second time acting on the stage. Most of the time she enjoys lights, set construction, set decorating, props, a little sound, and maybe some costumes. Somehow, Lora-Lynne got a reputation that she can either find it, make it, or fix it. So when she told people that she got a part in a play, the most common reaction was, “I didn’t know you acted.” Yes, she does. If fact, acting was the first thing that she trained in. It’s just that she really likes making things too.
Teagan Gibson (Bufoona) An alum of Trinity Western University’s theatre program, Teagan spends her time teaching high school drama and French and hanging out with her 8-month-old daughter, Delaney. She is honoured to be clowning her way through this show alongside such a talented cast and crew. Many thanks to her awesome husband, Seb, for supporting her getting back into performing while in the middle of maternity leave. As you experience this story, she hopes you are reminded that there is a God who loves you and will never leave you.
Ken Hildebrandt (Executive Artistic Director) Ken is the founding Executive/Artistic Director of Gallery 7 Theatre. In addition to managing the organization, Ken occasionally directs, acts or does lighting design. Select directing credits include Doubt, A Parable, Halo, The Giver, Lord of the Flies, Driving Miss Daisy, The Importance of Being Earnest and the Canadian amateur premier of Swallows and Amazons. Select acting projects include The Mousetrap, Macbeth and Tuesdays with Morrie. Lighting design credits include Hamlet (UFV), The Fantasticks, Mary’s Wedding, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Pride and Prejudice. When not doing theatre, Ken enjoys announcing at airshows, flying airplanes and relaxing at home with friends, movies and video games.
Elijah Kroeker (Sound Designer) Elijah received his training at Nimbus School of Recording and is excited to start his career in crafting sound and music. Elijah was in a show at Gallery 7 Theatre a few years ago: he played Jacob in Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat. He hopes you enjoy the show and is looking forward to working on more shows in the future.
Rachel MacKenzie (Stage Manager) Rachel is really excited to be joining G7 in her first show as Stage Manager, having previously acted in 110 Stories many years ago! Rachel has always had an interest in story-telling. From writing children’s books to teaching her Grade 3’s, Rachel is passionate about the gift of communicating in all its different forms. When she’s not bossing people around on stage, Rachel loves to work out at the gym and snuggle up with a good book.
Ruthie MacKenzie (Follie) Ruthie is a BA (Hons) Musical Theatre (Triple Threat) Graduate from the University of Chichester Conservatoire (England). Ruthie has appeared in a wide variety of theatre – from Shakespeare to Disney, Rogers & Hammerstein to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland). Now, Ruthie can be found teaching in the kindergarten classroom and finds great joy doing life with her little ones! This rehearsal process has been a wonderful journey for her and she feels very blessed by this cast and creative team. Thank you for everything. Soli Deo Gloria.
Kerri Norris (Director) Kerri is a Director, Actor, Costumer, Producer and sometime Dramaturg. She has an MFA in Acting from CalArts in Los Angeles. Some of her past directing credits include New Words, New Works (TWU), Alice in Wonderland (RCTC), The Snow Queen (TWU), Blithe Spirit (RCTC), Much Ado About Nothing (Shadows & Dreams), The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (Pacific Theatre). She is an instructor at TWU and also a co-founder of Shadows & Dreams Theatre Company. Upcoming she will be playing Iacamo in Cymbeline for Shadows & Dreams and directing The Snow Queen: A Frozen Adventure for RCTC.
Andrew Potts (Construction Manager/Set Designer) Andrew has built sets for Gallery 7 Theatre since 2017. He has also designed a few of them. Thanks to Kerri and Charlene for the collaborative experience designing this wagon, and to Linda for assistance with sourcing and carpentry.
