A Message from our Artistic Director

Welcome to Gallery 7 Theatre and to our annual Abby Theatre Fest: Stage to Screen Edition 2.0. I hope you’re ready for an entertaining, invigorating, and thoughtprovoking artistic journey through film.

Traditionally, Abby Theatre Fest is a short play festival designed to be experienced in-person sitting before a stage. However, since we did not know where we would be pandemic-wise when we had to make some decisions back in January, we felt hosting a second edition of our online version of Abby Theatre Fest was the most appropriate course of action.

That choice has once again allowed us the opportunity to broaden our engagement with regional performing, literary, visual and film artists, and has resulted in what I think is going to be another fascinating Festival sure to surprise and enlighten.

Abby Theatre Fest is designed to stretch boundaries artistically and thematically. The foundation of the festival is the same heart, soul and mind storytelling you expect from us, but with more of an edge. Artists have more freedom to explore characters, stories and themes that may not find a place on our mainstage but are equally important to us as a theatre. You may discover some entries to be rather experimental or avant-garde and some of the language quite raw, even explicit.

But I invite you to look beyond the surface and dig in to why the characters act, react and speak the way they do, and to consider what the artists are trying to say about this world we live in. This program and discussion guide, compiled and edited by Angelika Dawson, is designed to help you do just that.

I’m sure you’re going to uncover little nuggets of truth along the way, thus deepening your understanding of each film in a way that will bend your mind, satisfy your soul, and even warm your heart.

I’m quite proud of the fact that this year’s festival has attracted both emerging and establishing independent artists and filmmakers from around the region. Most of the creators, cast members and production personnel have had a connection to Gallery 7 Theatre in some way, making this year’s festival a bit of a reunion and a showcase of what the many artists who have moved through our doors have been doing elsewhere.

With Abby Theatre Fest, I invite you to experience something a little different, something a little edgy. I won’t guarantee you’ll love every single entry – that’s the way art goes - but I hope every single entry will inspire you to consider ideas maybe you haven’t considered before, or maybe haven’t considered in a while. Oh, and that you’ll find the overall festival wildly entertaining, thought-provoking and a celebration of artistic creation in our region.

A Message from our Discussion Guide Editor

Welcome to Gallery 7’s Abby Theatre Fest 2021!

Who knew that another year would come and go and we would still be living with a pandemic, one that has deeply affected arts communities all around us? I am so looking forward to being back in a theatre, watching live actors bring a story to life before me – but I am equally excited that we have continued with this version of Abby Theatre Fest.

One of the best parts of Abby Theatre Fest – whether it is live or on film – is the brevity of each production. Just as a novel differs from a short story, so a short film differs from a full-length movie. There is less time to develop a story arc and flesh out the characters. It requires precision story-telling and you as a viewer engage differently. As always, our artists have risen to the challenge. Our submissions come from artists here in BC and across the country – one of the beauties of a virtual festival.

This year’s submissions are perhaps even more varied in theme and content than last year.

We have comedy and tragedy, music and poetry, a fairy tale and a dystopian tale that was written years ago but speaks strongly to our current reality.

Several of these films were made because of the support of friends and family – and sometimes because of the support of complete strangers. Crowdfunding platforms and grants from businesses or corporations made it possible to bring these stories to life. One of our film makers, Adriel Brandt, said this: “This project was funded and supported by a community both on and off screen. Consider giving a few dollars to a small Kickstarter or Indiegogo now and then; I know firsthand how meaningful every little bit is.”

In the same way, Gallery 7 Theatre is grateful for the support of this festival and of the theatre in general. Abby Theatre Fest is exciting, boundary-stretching, risk-taking art and we are grateful for your support as audience members.

In this Discussion Guide, you’ll find some background information on each production, along with some questions that help us think through what we’ve seen in a more in-depth way. Use these questions for your own reflection after each show or to spark some discussion as you chat with friends and family afterwards.

Just like last year, this year’s festival is presented completely online. How do you respond to this platform? What are the pros and cons of film versus live theatre experience?

Consider the difference between a short story and a novel: the former means the writer has a shorter period of time to introduce characters and create a story arc, the latter means the writer has greater opportunity to go into detail, develop characters and relationships more slowly, and create more scenes. The same could be said for one act plays vs. full length dramas. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each format of storytelling?

Pontificus Potts and the Case of the Missing Faith Creator: Andrew Potts Runtime: 12:38 Content Advisory: None.

Description: Pontificus Potts, Private Eye is in the doldrums of a missing person investigation. A tip from his source at the local pool hall sends him to a few uncomfortable places. Will his perseverance pay off? This mini-musical disguised as a detective story explores themes of mystery and faith.

Background: Andrew loves the detective movie genre of the 1950s and wanted to recreate this in the modern telling of a story. He also decided to challenge himself by doing that in the form of a musical. The theme of faith deconstruction was something he’d been thinking about for some time and the music and lyrics came together over the course of a few days. Andrew hopes that the audience will be entertained and that if any deeper connections to themes of mystery, faith, and faith deconstruction take place, well that’s a bonus!

Pontificus Potts’ first song has the recurring refrain “sometimes you do what you don’t want to do, sometimes you run where you don’t want to run.” What is it about human nature that causes this response in us?

Notice the differences in use of black-and-white vs colour in this film. What is happening for Pontificus when these transitions happen? What do you think this signifies?

When Pontificus finds Faith and tells her that Mr. Head is worried about her, she tells Pontificus that Mr. Head can forget about her. Why is there sometimes a disconnection between one’s head and one’s heart?

Introductions Creator: Julia Martens Runtime: 7:58 Description: Julia Martens is an artist and illustrator striving to tell her stories and find her purpose as a young artist. Follow the journey of her childhood creations to her art endeavours now, and keep your eyes open to watch the story unfold and see what is hidden in each piece.

Background: In this short film, artist Julia Martens shares her journey as an artist through spoken word and visual art. Though the film is brief, the documented work took months to complete. Individual videos of this work were originally posted to her Instagram stories (@juliafmartens). She feels it is important to suspend disbelief and get lost in the painting-story-telling process.

It is Julia’s hope that those viewing this work gain a new appreciation for painting and painters and that they are inspired to follow their passions. She is grateful to all who are watching the Abby Theatre Fest: “these are people who appreciate the creative minds of our community and for that I am eternally so grateful.”

Henchmen Creator: Aaron Dawson Runtime: 8:01 Description: Two henchmen discuss the pros and cons of being a professional henchman during some down time on the job.

Background: In Star Wars: Episode lV- A New Hope, there’s a scene where ObiWan Kenobi is sneaking around the Death Star when two Stormtroopers walk by having a banal conversation. What if the camera had followed them instead of Obi-Wan? This is essentially the idea that became the seed for this short film that eavesdrops on the conversation of two Henchmen on a slow day. What kind of logistics does it take to run an Evil Empire? Who are the people who sign up to do the grunt work? What inspires them to take on the thankless tasks? Is it the great money and decent medical plan?

Henchmen was Aaron’s first production after graduating from film school at Capilano University. Reflecting on the effort it took to bring the film to fruition, he’s grateful for a great cast and crew, and especially for his producer, Aidan MacAulay. His goal was to make a good quality film that would give people a good chuckle and something to talk about.

Have you ever considered the lives of secondary characters in a film or a story? What role do they usually play? Does a story work without them?

When the Lake Was Drained Away Creator: Amanda EveSlattery Runtime: 14:21 Description: This set of four original songs explores themes of Truth and Reconciliation including excerpts from a Sumas Lake song cycle (tracing the draining of Sumas Lake in the 1920s) and a song of mourning for residential school victims & survivors.

Content Warning: None.

Background: The four songs presented by AmandaEve come out of her formal studies and personal reflection of the history of Sumas Lake, the home of the Stó:lõ people. She is careful to acknowledge that she is a white person of settler ancestry. When singing in the first person, the texts are taken directly from interviews and letters found in secondary sources. (The pandemic prevented personal interviews and workshopping of these songs to take place.) Two of the songs presented in the Abby Theatre Fest come out of a 30-minute song cycle that takes the listener on a journey from a pre-contact lake, to Stó:lõ-Settler relations, to post-drainage reactions and resilience. The other two songs are stand-alone songs. The third song explores themes of interpersonal trauma, the last song “215 and Counting” is AmandaEve’s processing of the discovery of graves on the site of a residential school this past spring. It is her hope that audiences will be inspired to learn more about Sumas Lake and continue the reflection process for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is hard to imagine most of today’s Fraser Valley covered by the waters of a tidal lake. “When the Lake Was Drained Away” and “Play the Drums to Mourn” reflect the experience of loss by the Stó:lõ people of their traditional lands. How do you respond to this part of the Fraser Valley’s history?

How does music help us process difficult subject matter?

Talking Trees Creator: Joel Brandt Runtime: 8:08 Description: Two disillusioned revolutionaries mourn the death of their inspiring leader and make a surprising new friend in this short film based off of "The Walk to Emmaus" story found in Luke 24:13-35. Expectations and interpretations of death and life, gender, spirit, and species are toyed with and by the end of it all it feels like maybe, just maybe, things are going to be okay.

Content Advisory: Explicit and very strong language.

Background: This film was produced in 2018 in part as a submission to "Burning Hearts," an art exhibition centered on The Walk to Emmaus organized

by Emmanuel Mennonite Church, and also as the final creative project for a Regent College class entitled "The Christian Imagination." The goal was to reimagine the Emmaus Walk story in a different context and through a different medium. Joel and his brother, Adriel, wrote the script and recruited friends to lend their talents behind and in front of the camera over a two-day film shoot at Willband Creek Park in Abbotsford, BC. Joel edited the film at home and on crowded Vancouver buses on his way to and from classes.

Joel’s hope is that audience members will be able to imagine the raw feelings of despair and anger that the disciples must have felt as a result of Jesus’ death. “I also hope that the film will help audiences view the biblical story’s mysterious premise (the disciples not recognizing Jesus at first) in light of Jesus’ tendency in the gospels to subvert peoples’ expectations while simultaneously highlighting their prejudices.

Art: An Unexpected Vocation Creators: Michael Antonakos & Mike Klemak Runtime: 9:26 Description: This film tells the story of an artist who is so focused on attaining success that he loses everything, and is left destitute and homeless. It's on the streets that he finds redemption and inspiration from the unlikeliest of people: another homeless man named Louie. From Louie, he learns how to seize each moment and find happiness in all things, which is what ironically leads him to the success he always desired.

Background: Mike co-wrote the script for this film with Michael Antonakos, after Michael saw a news story in Toronto. The two took that article and turned it on its head to look more closely at how society views those who are homeless. They worked with director Marianna Phung to focus on major themes of creativity, homelessness, survival, and growth. The story was filmed in Toronto and featured people living on the streets. Mike says it’s their love-letter to the community.

The hope is that audiences will be affected by what they see and begin to question what current society is really like, that they will realize that sometimes things aren’t what they initially seem to be. Mike says: “On the outside, someone may appear as one thing but every human being is multi-layered, with a rich backstory that, if you stopped to talk to them, you just might find interesting.”

A Typical Fairytale Creator: Annette Reilly Runtime: 10:30 Description: Sherry and Larry, a young 20 something couple, find each other one night in a bar. Their love, it was magic! The two have a romance fit for a storybook - told entirely in rhyme. They seem to live happily ever after when one day Sherry is visited by what she thinks is a crazed woman who informs Sherry of her impending pregnancy and its result: a son! The couple do have a child. Not a boy, but a girl who only adds to the perfect life they’ve built...until she doesn’t. She begins acting out; diverging from the classic happily ever after, until at 10 years of age, she admits that she is not a she at all! The parents are left reeling from the confession, feeling as though they’ve lost their child. Will they find the bravery to leave the classic narrative and write a new story? One of love and acceptance?

Birds of a Feather: The Thong Scene Creator: Linda McRae Runtime: 9:27 Description: Birds of a Feather is a tale of the resilient bonds of love and family, fraught with hilarious misunderstandings, steep generational gaps, debilitating secrets and deep rooted hurts between 4 generations of women in one family.

“The Thong Scene” video is a reading based on a true account of a comical misunderstanding between 3 of those generations.

Background: McRae says the impetus behind writing a full play was in response to a lack of plays/roles for strong women. Realizing that she had a wealth of experience with strong women whose “sense of humour, bond of love, and personal faith” has seen them all through a lifetime of experience. Writing the play has been cathartic, although she doesn’t want audiences to think the whole thing is a comedy – it’s really a dram-edy, reflecting life filled with both heartache and humour. This scene gives audiences a taste of the whole.

The Waste Land Creator: Adriel Brandt Runtime: 25:50 Description: A group of survivors struggle with morality and hope in an apocalyptic wasteland.

Content Advisory: Some violence and strong language.

Background: Inspired by T.S. Eliot’s poem of the same name, this film was originally written several years ago as a one-act play. Adriel says it underwent quite a transformation to become the film we view today. He wanted to write something that would challenge viewers, that didn’t have an easy resolution, and aimed for a certain human universality in its characters, so that they would be believable regardless of age, gender, and appearance. His hope is that as they watch the film, audiences will remember that sometimes and especially for some people, the world is truly a bleak waste land. “Sometimes, to walk a mile in a person’s shoes means also to walk that person’s mile instead of taking the shoes to your own stretch of kinder turf,” he says.

Questions:

Sydney appears to be the leader of this group of people trying to survive 1 the plague. At one point he asks: “have I failed?” How would you respond to Sydney?

Why do Jordan and Mickey spare Sydney’s life? Is this an act of defiance, disgust, or is it a promise of hope?

*Adriel comments that the pandemic has caused division and darkness all around us and while the film seems to have very little outright positivity, the fact that Jordan and Mickey choose not to engage with the literal manifestation of hopelessness that faced them is important. “Sometimes you must walk away from bad news. If you’ve reached your limit don’t engage,” he says. He also strongly encourages audience members to get vaccinated – “They didn’t work in the FICTIONAL Waste Land universe. They do in ours.”

The Rougarou Creator: Emmett Hanley Runtime: 10:50 Description: Late one night, after making a terrible revelation, a young man is haunted by three odd spirits with dubious intentions. A surreal journey through the mind awaits in this abstract exploration of anxiety and bloodletting.

Content Advisory: Some scenes may frighten some audience members.

Background: This film was inspired by early surrealist films like Un Chien Andalou and Le Voyage dans la Lune, as well as modern films such as The Lighthouse and The Lobster. The Rougarou is a legendary creature in francophone culture – the spelling is an interpretation of loup-garou, French for werewolf, the difference being that the Rougarou maintains its human consciousness even after it transforms. In Cajun culture, the Rougarou prowls swamps looking for misbehaving children… or Catholics who have broken their Lenten vows.

Emmett’s overarching theme was the concept of “bloodletting” – the method used by plague doctors in medieval times to “balance the humours” – but as the film progressed, he realized that there were underlying themes of dealing with

depression and anxiety. While the content may be challenging, Emmett hopes audiences will come to it with an open mind and that they will be able to see hope and growth at the end.

T he concept of bloodletting runs through this film in various ways, both literal and figurative. In medieval times, doctors used bloodletting as a method of healing – often to the detriment of their patients. Figuratively speaking, are there ways in which we do this to ourselves as we try to deal with things in our lives?

T he man in the film says he feels like a sink. The doctor asks him if he is satisfied with his life and offers to treat him for a price. What is the real price of his treatment?

“You thought being a Rougarou would make you happy but no one will want to be your friend if you’re a Rougarou.” What is the role of the Rougarou in the film?

An Empire Creator: Aaron Dawson & Scott Currie Runtime: 3:16 Description: A music video featuring musical artist, Scott Currie.

Content Advisory: None.

Background: This music video developed from an inside joke. Aaron and his musician friend, Scott Currie, were talking about enunciation and how it’s sometimes difficult to understand the lyrics of a song. Aaron used Scott’s song “An Empire” as an example – sometimes it sounds like “Umpire.”

Aaron envisioned a music video with a baseball theme but when lack of budget proved to be an issue, he had to figure out how to create it with no budget. The whole video was shot on his iPhone as he already had an anamorphic lens and a gimbal. Wardrobe and props were borrowed or purchased at thrift shops and filming was done at a local park. Aaron’s dad happens to be an actor and agreed to star as the Umpire.

Aaron says thorough planning and preparation was key to ensuring that the whole thing could be shot in a few hours over the course of an evening. The takeaway? You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a quality piece of art – you just have to know how to work with what you have: friends and family, bits of wardrobe and props, and a great idea.

Content Warning: None Background: This is a project of head and heart. The original script (which formed the basis for last year’s film Motherhood and Being a Sandwich or The Best Laid Plans) was written a few years ago for a fundraiser for Dark Glass Theatre. When the pandemic forced all things to go stage to screen last year, Sue rewrote that script and filmed it with the help of her son Emmett Hanly.

That film has gone on to win an award of recognition from The IndieFEST Film Awards in the U.S., is a finalist at the Golden Harvest Film Festival in Tokyo, nominated at London Shorts in the U.K., and selected for the Berlin Indie Film Festival and the 7th Siding Festival of Film here in BC. So that’s the chronology, the head part.

The heart, of course, is its content. This year’s film returns to the diary that Sue began after the birth of her second son, Sam. The film introduces new characters and focuses more on her relationship with her own father and the things she learned from him. Sue hopes audiences will get a little laughter in their bellies, a tear in their eyes, and hope in their hearts. She also offers this advice: be sure that any recipes you try are peer reviewed first.
