Greetings from the Artistic Director
Welcome to Gallery 7 Theatre! We’re so excited to be FINALLY presenting this mad-cap mystery adventure following its unfortunate postponement in 2020 because of the pandemic. Over the last many months, we’ve all faced some very challenging times, and if you’re like me, you’re probably feeling exhaustion from it all. I hope that your time here today offers you some reprieve, and that this comedy brings you some joy and a sense of rejuvenation to help you through. Quite often, you will see in these notes my comments about how the play you’re about to see explores deeper spiritual, social or relational themes, themes that are important to us as a theatre specializing in producing thoughtful plays for the heart, soul and mind. Yeah, not so much with this show. With Baskerville – A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, we’re putting our usual practice of delving into headier ideas on pause to have some good ‘ole fashioned fun. Not because our other shows aren’t fun, but because good theatre programming (at least in my humble view) should take us through an emotional, spiritual and intellectual journey over the course of the season, with ebbs and flows, high points and lows, lighter and heavier moments,
the dramatic mixed with the entertaining. Each year, we endeavor to take you on such a journey and with this production, we’re definitely focusing on the lighter, more entertaining side of things. Simple entertainment can cheer the heart, charm the intellect, and comfort the soul. Laughter can bring clarity and usher in perspective. Plus, who doesn’t love a good and healthy distraction that a classic ‘who dunnit” brings? And so, here we are, sharing with you this comedic murder mystery, arguably a great fit for us when you really think about it. Sure, we could talk about how the play explores concepts like ‘good vs. evil’, ‘righting what is wronged’ and ‘helping the oppressed’… Knowing that these themes exist in this show certainly gives me confidence as an AD that we haven’t completely gone awry in our play selections – but I think it’s also healthy to recognize that while those themes are certainly evident in the play, it’s ok for us to relax, kick up our feet up (figuratively, not literally) and be delighted by a highly theatrical, quite hilarious play. Think we could all use the break. Curtain up!

With everything that is going on in the world right now, it’s time for some much needed comic relief. I am very pleased to see that ticket sales to Gallery 7 Theatre productions are steadily increasing as people are realizing its safe to come back to live theatre performances. We will continue to ensure that our patrons feel as safe as possible while attending our productions. Director’s Notes Welcome to our little slice of nutty. Fasten your seatbelt; you are in for a ride. Baskerville is set in the early 1900s. This retelling of the ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ follows Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who are hot on the trail of the murderer who wants to wipe out the male heirs of the Baskerville family. Our brilliant investigators must unravel the clues as they travel through England, meeting an array of fascinating characters who both guide and distract their quest to find the killer. I am proud of the work our creative team has done weaving this piece together. Faced with the task of creating this over-dramatic story with a minimal set, a large array of characters, and the need for significant technical support, our team was up for the challenge. We are excited to finally bring this show to a live audience. This show is unlike any other show I have directed. In many ways, the presentation straddles the line between a ‘play’ and a ‘musical’. Although our characters do not often break out into singing and dancing, there certainly are some theatre norms that we are intentionally breaking. Out interactions and characterizations are large, comedic, and often slap-stick. This form of comedy is in many ways more in-line with some of the traditional Comedia Dell’Arte and other comedic forms than our modern comedy. Our cast has enjoyed pushing the norms to create this piece. Our production of Baskerville was originally cast two years ago and needed a re-boot for this season. We have been eagerly anticipating your arrival. I hope you are ready to have some fun. Enjoy the show.

Koenraad Beugelink (Doctor Watson) “Good heavens” is Koenraad ever excited to be back on the stage after a lengthy hiatus raising kids, playing cops and robbers on TV, and pastoring here in Abbotsford. He is no stranger to Abbotsford theatre having appeared in such First Light Theatre productions as The Matchmaker, The Diary of Anne Frank, Harvey and The Wizard of Oz. He wishes to thank his wife Christine, and his family and friends for their support as he steps back on the stage.
Charlene Crawford (Production Manager/Hair and Makeup Designer) A BA graduate from the TWU theatre program, Charlene has been telling stories on the stage for almost two decades. She has served as the company’s production manager officially for 5 years but was a volunteer and contract artist for many years before that. Charlene has performed, produced and designed during her career and is sad to see that some post-secondary institutions no longer value the contributions of theatre to society. She is thankful that you have chosen to come out to support the magic of live theatre.
Becki Cormier (Stage Manager) This is Becki’s second show stage managing with Gallery 7 Theatre. She has been involved in the theatre world in Chilliwack for the past 17 years wearing many hats behind the lights of the stage. To this date, stage managing and directing have been her loves. She wants to thank Gallery 7 Theatre for asking her back to do another show, the cast for putting up with her poor vocal sound cues, and the crew for working so hard on making this show a success.

John Dawson (Sherlock Holmes) John is a big fan of theatre, both as a patron and a performer. He is celebrating his 20th year on the stage and is performing in his 22nd Gallery 7 Theatre production. The list includes God’s Man in Texas, Having Hope at Home, Freud’s Last Session and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Nothing warms his heart as much as live theatre and he is thrilled to be a part of this zany group of talented performers. John hopes you enjoy watching it as much as he enjoys performing it.
Ken Hildebrandt (Executive Artistic Director/Lighting Designer) Ken is the founding Executive/Artistic Director of Gallery 7 Theatre. In addition to managing the organization, Ken occasionally directs, acts or does lighting design. Select directing credits include Doubt, A Parable, Halo, The Giver, Lord of the Flies, Driving Miss Daisy, The Importance of Being Earnest and the Canadian amateur premier of Swallows and Amazons. Select acting projects include The Mousetrap, Macbeth and Tuesdays with Morrie. Lighting design credits include Hamlet (UFV), The Fantasticks, Mary’s Wedding, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Pride and Prejudice. When not doing theatre, Ken enjoys announcing at airshows, flying airplanes and relaxing at home with friends, movies and video games. Jeff Kiers (Director/ Set Designer) After studying theatre in university, Jeff spent 25 years teaching drama in local Christian high schools. Jeff produced and directed 28 shows in his career including Goodrich’s The Diary of Anne Frank, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Comedy of Errors, and Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle. He loves directing shows as much as he loves designing and building sets. His favourite sets include a western town, a sloped donut shaped stage with a large scrim backdrop, and a larger-than-life doll house on a circular apron. This is the third set Jeff has designed for Gallery 7 Theatre and the first show he has directed. He is excited to create a stage design that balances functionality and creativity with the need to transform the space to meet the needs of the many different settings. It is his hope that the set design will guide you as you imagine the many different locations created by the story.
Emily Krack (Costume Designer) This is Emily’s second show working with Gallery 7 Theatre as a costume designer. Her passion for costume design came at a young age when she took sewing lessons to be able to create her own looks, eventually combining this with an enjoyment of film. Fresh out of high school, she completed a degree at Vancouver Film School specializing in costume design. This eventually lead to a partnership with Gallery 7 Theatre when she moved back home to Abbotsford. Getting used to theatre as opposed to film definitely took some adjusting as the stage has many unseen differences, from how fast actors need to change to how durable a costume needs to be. Emily has enjoyed the opportunity at getting to understand the inner workings of theatre as she continues to work with Gallery 7 Theatre.
Dianna Lewis (Priops Designer) Dianna is happy to be back in the theatre working with old and new friends. She has been around G7 for many seasons and enjoys creating props for the shows. Some of her favourite shows include Schoolhouse, Beauty and the Beast and Around the World in 80 Days. She also enjoys supplying G7 with production photography and actor headshots.

Ken Ludwig (Playwright) Ken Ludwig has had six shows on Broadway, seven in London’s West End. Many of his works have become a standard part of the American repertoire. His 28 plays and musicals have been performed in over 30 countries in more than 20 languages and are produced throughout the United States every night of the year. Lend Me a Tenor won two Tony Awards and was called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century by The Washington Post. Crazy For You was on Broadway for five years and won the Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Musical. In addition, he has won the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Helen Hayes Awards, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Contributions to the American Theater. His plays have starred, among others, Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Tony Shaloub, Joan Collins and Hal Holbrook. His stage version of Murder on the Orient Express was written expressly at the request of the Agatha Christie Estate, and his latest play, Dear Jack, Dear Louise, won the 2020 Charles MacArthur Award for Best New Play of the Year and is optioned for Broadway. His book, How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, published by Penguin Random House, won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of the Year, and his essays are published in the Yale Review. He is a graduate of Harvard and Cambridge and is a frequent guest speaker for groups as varied as The Oxford-Cambridge Society, The Jane Austen Society of North America, The Folger Shakespeare Library, and The Baker Street Irregulars. Andrew Potts (Construction Manager) Andrew fell in love with Sherlock Holmes and detectiving in general as soon as he began to read chapter books. He enjoyed reading The Three Investigators, Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, and any other mystery book he could find. In grade 6, he started a small detective agency with his brother and best friend. Many mysteries soon presented themselves, but solving them proved harder than the books made it sound… Presently he attends to other mysteries, such as how to make a bunch of set pieces roll around the stage without falling over!
Ryan Scramstad (Sound Designer) Ryan is the Artistic Director of Jesters Theatre in Mission, where he works with youth to help them reach their potential in theatre and in community building. He has worked as a professional actor and sound designer, specifically working on Gallery 7 Theatre shows like Pride and Prejudice, Beau Jest, Schoolhouse, Halo, and The Giver. He’s thankful to his wife, Mikayla, who keeps him sane and puts up with his childishness, and to Ken and Charlene for keeping Gallery 7 Theatre going through a crazy pandemic. The work here is vital so thanks to you for coming out to see the show!
Danielle Snider (Actor 1) While originally a performer, Danielle has dabbled in all things theatre, from production and publicity to directing and teaching. Danielle has a B.A in theatre and is passionate about storytelling and experiencing shared humanity. In addition to her day job, Danielle is the Communications and Operations Coordinator at Dark Glass Theatre and a Co-Producer at the newly founded Little Dipper Theatre Co. This marks Danielle’s first time back on stage in almost a decade! Huge thanks to her hubby for taking care of their two kiddos while she ran off to play in the theatre.
