Hearing Undergraduate Students and the Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation Program

How to Apply The BAI program accepts hearing and deaf students.

The application to the program includes:

BAI online application Application fee of $50 (non-refundable) Three essays—two essays must be in writing and one essay

must be a two-to-three minute video in American Sign Language Two letters of recommendation Official high school and/or college transcript (Applicants who have earned 30 or more college credits do not need to submit high school transcripts.)

ACT or SAT scores (Applicants who have earned 12 or more college credits in English and/or mathematics do not need to submit ACT/SAT scores.)

After your application is preapproved for eligibility to the BAI program, you will be issued an invitation for:

ASLPI Screening—a score of 3 or higher is required for

consideration for admittance to the BAI program Reviewing and responding to a BAI Language Proficiency DVD. This will be mailed to you by the Office of Admissions, and instructions will be included. Upload your video response to YouTube, Dropbox, or another online media storage system as an unlisted or private video. Then send the URL for your video response to baiadmissions@gallaudet. edu. Please do not send the URL to the Office of Admissions.

After the application process is complete, your file will be reviewed and a decision will be made by the Department of Interpretation. The Office of Admissions will notify you of your admission status within two weeks after a decision is rendered to that office.

Transfer Students

At your earliest convenience, please submit an official transcript from your current institution to the Office of Admissions to be evaluated for transfer credits. The Transfer Credit Specialist in the University’s Office of the Registrar will notify you about the number of transfer credits Gallaudet will accept.

Choice of Major

You can change your major to any of the other majors offered at Gallaudet.

However, you must withdraw from the BAI program and re-apply to Gallaudet as a Hearing Undergraduate (HUG) applicant. You may also double major in BAI and another major.

The Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation (BAI) program comprises a comprehensive, sequenced, and integrated series of courses and experiences

designed to provide you with knowledge, fieldwork, techniques, and interpreting skills in interactive interpreting. Program requirements consist of 42 major credits, including coursework, fieldwork, and field internship. Supporting courses include those in ASL and deaf studies, biology, and linguistics. Part-time study is also available.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. How long will it take for me to graduate from the BAI program?

For students with no transfer credits, the BAI degree plan generally takes four years to complete. For students with transfer credits, the BAI degree plan depends on the number of credits transferred.

2. Who will be my program advisor?

When you arrive for New Student Orientation, you will meet with a representative from the Academic Advising Office who will work with you on the General Studies curriculum. You will also be assigned a faculty advisor in the Department of Interpretation. When your General Studies Requirements are completed, you will work only with the department faculty.

3. Can I have a double major?

Yes, you can have a double major or you can have a minor in addition to your BAI major.

4. Can I visit the campus and meet with

someone to discuss the BAI program?

Yes. We encourage you to attend an Open House and inform the Visitors Coordinator in the Office of Admissions ahead of time that you would like to meet with faculty from the Department of Interpretation. If you cannot attend an Open House but would like to visit another day, you can contact the Visitors Coordinator at visitors.center@gallaudet.edu to request an appointment.

5. Can I enroll in the BAI program part-time?

Yes, you may enroll part time in the program.

Hearing Undergraduate Program Admission to Gallaudet University’s Hearing Undergraduate (HUG) program is open to a limited, select group of hearing undergraduate students.

This program is for hearing students who know American Sign Language and want to work with deaf people or in the deaf community.
