Welcome TO GALLATIN! I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN GALLATIN. I’VE LIVED MY WHOLE LIFE HERE. Gallatin is a great place to be. Maybe I’m partial, but I don’t think so. Just look at the number of new homes and businesses. The city’s growth tells the story. People are moving to Gallatin every day.

What attracts them? I suspect that it’s the same things that have kept me here for so long: scenic Old Hickory Lake, our lovely park system, a bustling economy, and friendly people who have elevated the practice of southern hospitality to an art form. (It’s no accident that the city was voted “Nicest Place in America” in 2017 by Reader’s Digest Magazine.) And it doesn’t hurt that Gallatin is just a stone’s throw away from Nashville.

For me and many others, Gallatin is just right. It’s not too big and not too small. It feels like home. As you explore this edition of the Gallatin City Guide, I invite you to venture out into the community and experience everything Gallatin has to offer. You’ll find True Grit and Amazing Grace. MAN CAVE MY NAME IS NICK. I DECIDED TO SPEND A SATURDAY OUT ON THE TOWN WITH MY 30-YEAR-OLD SON, DREW. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE PERFECT SATURDAY FOR A FATHER AND SON TO ROAM AROUND GALLATIN.

Hone your skills with firearms or try out a new gun at Sumner Gun & Supply’s spacious shooting range.

Off to the Shooting Range Our first stop was Sumner Gun & Supply at 526 West Main Street. I brought a few pistols from my collection—a .44 mag Ruger Redhawk Revolver and a .40 Cal Beretta Elite Commander in Stainless— to put through the paces on the shooting range. I come here often and the owner, Kenneth Winter, knows me by name.

Kenneth also knows that Drew has been thinking about buying a Glock 43, a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, so he set him up with a rental to test on the range.

Sumner Gun has the ideal environment for target practice with a spacious tenlane, 75-foot range, HEPA-filtered air, seating areas, and plenty of room to stretch out. Shooters on the range enjoy free use of hearing and eye protection, or you can buy your own from the store. The store also sells targets, ammunition in every caliber, handguns, rifles, shotguns, and a wide variety of accessories, including reloading supplies and cleaning equipment. Range memberships are available for individuals, families, and corporations, and you can rent out the entire range for private events.

After our time on the range was up, Drew bought the Glock 43 he’d been testing and then asked about the Tennessee Handgun Permit Carry Class that Sumner Gun & Supply offers. Drew is comfortable with firearms (he shot his first clay pigeon at the tender age of eight) so he’ll be able to skip the two-hour preliminary class that Sumner Gun & Supply teaches for inexperienced shooters.

Getting a haircut is no reason to miss your favorite team in action! Sports Clips has transformed the grooming experience for legions of Gallatin sports fans.

Espresso and Manicures I spent the previous day in the garden and my nails are trashed. Drew’s aren’t much better after changing the oil in his vintage Karmann Ghia. So, it’s off to Govan’s Salon and Coffee Café at 116 North Water Street for a no-fluff manicure, which includes clipping, filing, a soak, a cuticle treatment, hand massage, and buffing. Drew and I enjoy a latte from the café as our nail techs work their magic.

The Govans’ story is an interesting one.

Angela and Henry Govan have been in business together for nearly 18 years and their shop blends their passions. In 2000, after the death of Henry’s father, Frank Govan, a well-known artist and professor of art at the University of Memphis, Henry and Angela dreamed of opening a coffee shop and art gallery to display and sell Frank’s works. Shortly after purchasing the building on North Water Street, they found out they were expecting. Henry, who had been working as a cosmetologist in Nashville, quit his job to help Angela open the coffee shop, and then later opened a hair salon in the back. The inspirational gift shop came later.

On our way out, I schedule a pedicure for a Thursday night when I can take

advantage of the complimentar y beverages they offer. Angela tells me that there’s a construction worker who comes in for a pedicure at least once a month because his feet wouldn’t survive without them. I can relate.

HAIRCUTS & SPORTS Next, it’s off to Sports Clips at 1101 Nashville Pike, Suite 170. We both need haircuts and Drew’s beard is looking a bit ragged. Saturdays are always busy days at this salon, so we check in online about an hour before to get our place in line. It virtually eliminates the wait.

I’ve been coming to Sports Clips since Lance and Patty Waller opened the store ten years ago. This shop is a home run, in my opinion. For one, they offer a premier service known as the MVP Experience, which beefs up a precision haircut with feel-good extras like a legendary hot steamed towel, a massaging shampoo, and a relaxing neck and shoulder massage. Second, there are no fewer than five wall-mounted bigscreen TVs. What better way to make a once-dreaded, time-wasting grooming task more palatable than to watch your favorite team in action or get up to date on the latest scores and standings.

One day, when Lance was in the shop, I asked him if he had ever witnessed

any disagreements about which games would be on the big-screen TVs. Had someone insisted that the channel be changed from the Titans game to a broadcast of an obscure sport like dodgeball or curling? Lance reassured me that all discussions about what to watch have been peaceful.

We had barely sat down to wait when Drew’s name was called. About five seconds later, I was ushered to my favorite stylist, Morgan, who proceeded with my haircut.

We both love coming to Sports Clips.

There’s almost no waiting and the service quality is great. We’re in and out quickly, even with the extras that are part of the MVP Experience. Plus, they offer a free neck trim update in between cuts to extend the life of the haircut. That’s a winner in my book.

to boat or not to boat Our last stop of the day is Gallatin Marina at 727 Marina Private Drive on the shores of Old Hickory Lake. This is one of my favorite places in town.

Gallatin is fortunate to have a full-service marina within the city limits. How many communities can make that claim? You can rent a boat slip, rent space in their

SEE and DO rack storage facility, get your boat serviced and detailed, fill up your boat’s gas tank, and buy any supplies and sundries you might need.

We’re going to Gallatin Marina because I need to calibrate the cruise control on my Malibu wakeboarding boat. My summer weekends used to be spent trying to get air while jumping the wake and attempting 360-degree flips without blowing a knee. These days, you’ll find me mostly in the driver’s seat during the summer boating season. Gallatin Marina serves as a basecamp for family trips out on the lake to soak up the sun while floating on rafts, or to take the grandkids wakeboarding, or to join the hundreds of other local boaters who take to the water to watch July 4th fireworks displays.

After my boat maintenance is finished, Drew wants to investigate the possibility of renting a dock for his boat. We track down Nate Rubright, who has owned Gallatin Marina since late 2017, to ask about openings. Nate confirms what I’ve always known: Gallatin Marina is extremely popular.

There’s not a single wet dock slip available and the waiting list is long. However, dry storage is available for boats up to 30 feet. This is good news for Drew, whose 22-foot 1988 Donzi Testarossa needs a place to live when it’s not in the water.

to boat or not to boat Before the ink is dry on Drew’s Gallatin Marina dry storage agreement, a hostess is leading us to a seat at the bar at Awedaddy’s Bar & Grill, the restaurant at Gallatin Marina.

Owners Vern and Debra Benke have expanded this once humble weekend breakfast place into one of the most popular watering holes in town. Open April 1 through October 30 each year, Awedaddy’s has everything you would expect from a Key West-themed establishment, including an eclectic open-air

setting, daily happy hour, live music on Thursdays through Sundays, a massive array of specialty drinks, and a large beer selection. The menu features salads, steaks, burgers, pasta, seafood, sandwiches, and a robust Sunday brunch with a Bloody Mary bar.

It’s the unexpected that makes Awedaddy’s so much fun. You never know who’s going to show up or what you’re going to see. I once watched a double-jointed one-man band playing AC/DC on an accordion, harmonica, cymbals, and ukulele. I’ve seen a hotly contested game of trash talk cornhole.

When I eat at Awedaddy’s, I always end up defaulting to my old favorites: the hand-battered Cheese Styx, which are more like cheese logs, and the Pilot House Steak, a generous hunk of marinated beef served on toasted ciabatta bread topped with mozzarella cheese and teriyaki glaze. Drew’s default is the best-selling Waylon Burger, a towering sandwich that inspires awe as it’s delivered to the table. Though many of Awedaddy’s desserts are generous enough to share, be careful if you try. Drew’s wife once threatened to fork-stab an aunt who asked to taste her Key Lime Pie. My wife always orders the Homemade Hot Fudge Brownie A La Mode with two forks, thinking that we will share. That’s just not in the cards.

One of the most fun parts about a trip to Awedaddy’s is getting there. You can come by land or by water. If you come by boat, pull up near the gas dock. There’s usually an attendant who will guide you to a good spot to tie up.

At the end of a long and productive Saturday, Drew and I kick back at the bar over a few cold ones, pleased with everything we’ve accomplished. The rest of the family will be joining us shortly for dinner followed by an evening boat cruise. In or out of the man cave, life is good in Gallatin. §

Sumner County Museum WHY IS THIS GALLATIN TREASURE A MUST-SEE FOR OUT-OF-TOWN TOURISTS AND LOCALS ALIKE? HOW IS THE MUSEUM PREPARING TO STAY RELEVANT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY? GALLATIN CITY GUIDE INVESTIGATES.

Museums are often collections of old things covered with a thin patina of dust.

Not the Sumner County Museum. Thanks to new technology, generous donations, and progressive leadership, the Museum is delivering on its mission to make history come alive.

Founded in 1975 by John Garrott, a Gallatin businessman known for his love of local history, the Sumner County Museum has been located at 183 West Main behind the Trousdale House since 1981. The Museum’s three floors are packed with artifacts and memorabilia. “Exhibits are set up in chronological order,” said Ryan Baker, who has served as the Museum’s director since 2016.

Fossils, rocks, and Native American artifacts that date from the Paleolithic era through the Mississippian culture are the oldest items on display. The collection includes an exhibit detailing the arrival of the Longhunters, 18th century explorers who made lengthy expeditions into the American frontier wilderness and eventually guided settlers to Middle Tennessee. Visitors can learn about forts built in the 1700s, get a peek at how an early 19th century home was set up, see examples of blacksmith and tinsmith shops, learn about old schoolhouses, see examples of antique toys, explore Gallatin’s role as a horseracing mecca,

find out about the lives of African Americans who lived in the area, and see Gallatin’s first stoplight in action (it still works). Military history enthusiasts can learn about Sumner County’s involvement in wars from the Civil War through Vietnam, and see an exhibit on Brian Anderson, a Gallatin resident and test pilot who flew U2 jet missions to photograph Soviet military installations.

Though Garrott passed away in 2017, his influence is still being felt. In 2015, Garrott donated Stonewall, his historic residence at 332 East Main Street, along with a houseful of antiques, to the Museum. Built in 1831 by Dr. Levi Ring and acquired by Garrott in 1955, Stonewall opened to the public as part of the Sumner County Museum in early 2019. “Stonewall is an exhibit that pays loving tribute to family life in the 1840s,” said Baker.

The gracious antebellum home will also double as an event venue and gallery space. “Stonewall is a beautiful setting for weddings, birthday parties, showers, ladies’ teas, and events of all kinds,” said Baker, noting that the facility has been modified to be ADAaccessible. “We are partnering with the Gallatin Arts Council to use space in the newer parts of the home to display local artists’ work.”

Under Baker’s leadership, the Museum’s programming is expanding. Popular programs like the Annual Candlelight Cemetery Tour, now in its 23rd year, are going strong. Traveling Trunk, a program that brings the Museum’s stories and artifacts to elementary school classrooms,

The “Stories of Sumner” page on the Museum’s website leverages the power of video to capture the memories of older residents. Two videos are currently posted with more planned for the future.

Randy’s Records spawned a mail-order record business that by 1950 was selling 500,000 records a year. Wood was also the founder of Dot Records, a label that found success in the 1950s.

My name is Hayden Baker. I’m twelve and I’m a seventh grader at Shafer Middle School. When the editor of Gallatin City Guide asked me to share what I love about Gallatin’s parks, she didn’t need to twist my arm. But this isn’t a story I can tell on my own. I hardly ever go to Gallatin’s parks alone; I’m usually with a

Triple Creek Park

If I had to choose a favorite, Triple Creek would be the winner.

Asia and I are on the same page here, and not just because Triple Creek is the city’s biggest park. It’s because there’s so much to do there. I come to Triple Creek to play soccer. Asia comes to play football. The park has plenty of tall trees, which is especially useful if you want to hang up the hammock and have a picnic lunch. Triple Creek is also my favorite because I can bring Georgia, my English Foxhound, to the dog park. Even

friend. Most often, that friend is Asia Holman, a seventh grader at Rucker Stewart Middle School. Asia is the friend I recruited to help me tell the story about the parks we like the most.

If you’re a kid or you happen to have kids in your house, you’ll want to pay close attention.

though there are lots of things for dogs to do there, Georgia likes nothing better than sniffing the other dogs. Go figure!

Asia and I are both looking forward to the opening of the new Miracle Park in Triple Creek Park. One of the city’s softball fields is going to be converted into an all-inclusive playground and ballfield for kids with disabilities and special needs.

Tommy Garrott Aquatic Center In the summer, there’s no place I’d rather be than in the water at the Tommy Garrott Aquatic Center at the Gallatin Civic Center.

I like to play ball in the shallow end and go down all the slides.

Have you seen those slides? They’re crazy! Asia likes to jump in, play catch, and swim underwater. Gallatin’s pool isn’t like a lot of older pools where you have to climb down a ladder to get in. The sides slope gradually so everyone—including my baby sister—can wade in.

Greenways Asia and I both love riding our bikes, and our town’s greenway is a great place to do it. You can ride a long way on the greenway if you want to—from the town square all the way out to Triple Creek Park. I like to start at Triple Creek Park and head down the greenway toward the square. Tennessee Hardware is a great pit stop at about the halfway point. I get a snack and a drink there, and then head the rest of the way into town. I’ll take a loop around the square, and then head back to Triple Creek Park. Asia’s favorite route starts at the greenway’s trail head on Broadway and runs to Triple Creek Park and back.

Memorial Park If you like to play basketball as much as I do, Memorial Park is where you’ll want to be. Asia and I are both obsessed with hoops. Stephen Curry is my favorite, and Asia likes Kyrie Irving.

I play in the Gallatin Parks & Recreation City League, so I’m at the Memorial Park courts playing just about every day when the weather’s nice. Asia joins me a few times a week.

If there are kids in your house, you’ll want to check out these parks. My bet is that they (and you!) will love them as much as Asia and I do! §

Gallatin’s outstanding lineup of recreational facilities makes it easy to stay active.

Greenways

Gallatin’s expansive greenway system includes a four-mile walking track beginning at the Gallatin Civic Center and connecting to Triple Creek Park, winding its way through the park to its entrance on East Broadway.

Just inside the entrance to Triple Creek Park is an area called Mapleshade Rest which was donated to the City by volunteers in conjunction with Earth Day. The Triple Creek walking track then connects to the Town Creek Greenway, which runs along Town Creek, loops under East Broadway, and continues along Town Creek into Gallatin’s Historic Woodson Terrace neighborhood and on into to downtown Gallatin. Access the greenway from portals at the entrance to Triple Creek Park, and on Bentley Circle, Barton Drive, Perrolee Street, and Wilmore Street. The last section of the Town Creek Greenway, completed in 2016, continues from Wilmore Street along the creek to North Water Avenue and ends at the Farmers Market.

Lock 4 Park

Lock 4 Park is not only one of the most beautiful lake spots in Gallatin for picnicking, fishing and launching your boat, it is also the home of the famous Lock 4 Bike Trails. Mountain bike enthusiasts flock to the rolling BMX trails hidden in the park’s scenic woods. The 8.75-mile course is an 85 percent rolling technical single-track combining jeep roads, a paved road, and open sections for starts and passing. Events like the XTERRA Lock 4 Blast, Lock 4 Old Hickory Classic, and the State Mountain Bike XC Championship draw competitors from across the region.

Thompson Park

The city’s very first public park, Thompson Park is located just south of Gallatin’s historic square. Amenities include a baseball/ softball diamond, a basketball court, covered picnic areas with charcoal grills, paved walking areas, a playground, and a sand volleyball court. Thompson Park was once home to an Olympic-size public swimming pool now covered by the popular Skate Park of Gallatin. Watch fearless skateboarders, including the up-and-coming Jake Wooten, a Gallatin native who is gaining national at-

tention, work to perfect their tricks on the park’s built-in ramps, rails, and half pipes.

Municipal Park

Municipal Park is ground zero for league sports in Gallatin. Little League, Kiwanis, and American Legion baseball leagues all play games on Municipal Park diamonds.

The park also offers softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and the city’s largest playground. Covered picnic areas complete with charcoal grills make this park a favorite for family get-togethers.

Triple Creek Park

At 185 acres, Triple Creek Park is Gallatin’s largest park. Located just north of the historic town square, the park features a tournament-worthy sports complex with twelve soccer fields, four baseball/softball/ all-purpose fields, four youth softball fields, four adult softball fields, and two full-length football fields. Triple Creek is also home to a popular dog park, a playground, and beautiful walking trails. In addition to providing a home base for Gallatin Soccer League and Gallatin Youth Football League, the park hosts many Frisbee Disc Golf tournaments on its technically challenging 18-hole range.

For large get-togethers, consider bringing the crowd to the spacious event pavilion (reservations required) or reserve one of the park’s two picnic pavilions.

Bledsoe Creek State Park

Just a few minutes east of the city limits is Bledsoe Creek State Park’s all-inclusive playground designed to accommodate all children, including those with disabilities. In addition to a main playset with slides, the playground includes a climbing wall that is at an angle, an ADA-accessible swing, a specially designed merry-go-round, drums, and a partially enclosed seat called the Cozy Cocoon for children with autism who become overstimulated at the playground.

Gallatin Civic Center

A 65,000 square-foot facility built in 1994, the Gallatin Civic Center is available to all Gallatin residents for a small daily admission fee or an affordable annual membership. Enjoy fitness areas, meeting rooms, a double gym, racquetball and basketball courts, and an indoor pool, which offers eight 25-yard swimming lanes and a roped-off shallow end for free play and water exercise classes.

Located outside the Gallatin Civic Center, the Tommy Garrott Aquatics Facility is every kid’s dream with slides, splash pads, water towers, and more. The pool’s three water slides are not just kid magnets. More than a few adults have been known to take on the pool’s 164’ spiral slide, the 137’ spiral slide, and the 57’ speed slide. Clearview Park

City Cemetery

The Gallatin City Cemetery is a beautiful example of a 19th-century southern city cemetery. Its tombstone styles, landscaping, and grave plots reflect the demographics, history, and culture of the people of Sumner County since the establishment of the cemetery in 1818. The garden cemetery movement of the second half of the 19th century influenced the growth of a park-like layout as the cemetery expanded in size and capacity. Its status as the premiere burial site in Sumner County in Vintage Foxland/Foxland Crossing the 19th and early 20th centuries (GWEN) is emphasized by many grand tombstones and the presence of the graves of several people who were significant to the history of Gallatin, Sumner County, and Tennessee.

GALLATIN FACTOID

Rail Line History The Nashville-Gallatin Interurban Railway Corporation was established in the early 1900s to bring an electric commuter rail line from Gallatin to Nashville. The service made its last run in 1932 when automobiles and buses became the preferred mode of transportation. A piece of Sumner County history was unearthed as part of the $2.1 million project to revitalize Gallatin’s 200-year-old square. The piece of rail line that was uncovered helped to create the Y-shaped turnaround the streetcars would make in Gallatin before traveling back to Nashville.

but don’t want to go the traditional college path, what are your options?

Attending a Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) is one option. The TCAT system is a network of 27 technical schools that focus on workforce development throughout the state.

Gallatin sits just 18 miles away from the TCAT campus in Hartsville, which serves students in Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale, Macon, and Smith counties.

“TCATs were originally called vocational schools and they served mostly high school students,” said Kevin Harrison, a Sumner County native who serves as the school’s Academic Affairs & Community Relations Coordinator. “Students at today’s TCATs range in age from 18 up to nearly 60.”

Training workers to fill skilled positions in local companies is TCAT’s primary goal. “We work closely with employers to find out what skills are in demand and we design programs to meet those needs,” Harrison said, adding that graduates of the manufacturing, welding, machining, and industrial

programs are the most sought-after by local employers. “Training at TCAT is skill-focused. A student who wants to weld is not sitting in a literature class.

Everything the student learns applies to his or her career field.”

TCAT programs are self-paced. “Student who are naturally gifted in a skill and complete a twelve-month program in ten months don’t have to wait to graduate,” Harrison said. “Programs also have different exit points prior to a full diploma. Students who are workforce ready at a lower level can leave before they’re done with the program.”

In addition to covering the technical skills needed to perform a job, TCAT programs also include classes that help students develop the nontechnical skills necessary for career success. “We have a program called Worker Ethics that covers attendance, character, teamwork, appear-ance, attitude, productivity, organization skills, commun-ication, cooperation, and respect,” Harrison noted.

When students are ready to find a job, TCAT teaches them how to interview

and matches them with prospective employers. As Harrison put it: “About 90 percent of the students have jobs lined up before they graduate.

Though TCAT offers a wide variety of programs in fields like IT, nursing, and of f ice management, the manufacturing programs are among the most popular. “There’s a shortage of skilled workers nationwide and our programs are designed to get students matched with employers as quickly as possible,” explained Harrison, noting that TCAT students are eligible for co-op jobs after they’ve completed at least half of their training. “Students go to work part of the week and come to class the rest of the week. It’s a great industry partnership that’s working well for everyone.”

TCAT is playing a role in helping high school students consider careers in manufacturing. In addition to partnering with local business groups to address outdated notions about manufacturing, the TCAT at Hartsville has offered a dual enrollment in machine tool and welding with Gallatin High School since 2016. The

Young adults aren’t the only ones to benefit. Adults of all ages can attend TCAT tuition-free through Tennessee Reconnect, a program that helps adults enter higher education so that they may gain new skills and/or complete a degree or credential.

For Harrison, an education at TCAT is the best of all worlds. “TCAT is how postsecondary education should be,” added Harrison. “Get them in. Get them trained.

Get them to work.”

TENNESSEE PROMISE Tennessee Promise is a scholarship and mentoring program that gives Tennessee high school, home school, and GED graduates the opportunity to attend a community or technical college free of tuition and fees. The program pays for tuition and fees not covered by the Pell Grant, the HOPE scholarship or Tennessee Student Assistance Award funds. Using the TN Reconnect Grant at TCAT Hartsville If you’re a U.S. citizen who is 24 or older and has lived in Tennessee for at least a year, a TN Reconnect Grant can pay for your technical education at TCAT Hartsville. Simply apply to TCAT Hartsville and they will help you apply for the TN Reconnect Grant. For this, and any other aid you need, you will need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This ensures that you will receive all the federal aid for which you qualify.

The Reconnect Grant is a last dollar scholarship, so it funds the remaining tuition after the federal government’s contribution, and any other funding eligible state programs chip in. The result for qualifying students is the same: tuition-free education at TCAT.

Jonathan Lumpkins MECHANICAL DRAFTSMAN G.F. PUHL COMPANY

Jonathan is a shining example of when training, natural aptitude, and motivation meet opportunity. In short, of all the drafters I have ever worked with in 40 plus years no one else has even come close. I can’t thank the TCAT system enough for helping him and G.F. Puhl achieve our goals.

For Jonathan Lumpkins, three years of drafting classes at Gallatin High School and the encouragement of several of his teachers, including one who attended TCAT Hartsville, led to his enrollment in TCAT Hartsville’s Draf ting and C AD Technolog y Program. After graduation, Lumpkins was hired as a full-time draftsman by G.F. Puhl Company, a Gallatin-based manufacturer that designs trim and waste collection systems for use in industrial applications. Since starting at G.F. Puhl more than a decade ago, Lumpkin’s duties have expanded.

Today, he uses the state-of-the-art CAD technology to design layout diagrams of the company’s trim and waste collection systems. He also creates fabrication drawings that G.F. Puhl shop employees use to manufacture system components. Lumpkins sees his TCAT Hartsville training as the launching pad to a productive and rewarding career.

TYLER ROBERTS WELDER/FABRICATOR G.F. PUHL COMPANY Like many young adults, Tyler Roberts wanted a good career that didn’t involve going the traditional college route.

Thanks to TCAT Hartsville, he got what he wanted. During his senior year at Gallatin High School, representatives from TCAT Hartsville came to his shop class to talk about their programs. After graduation, Roberts enrolled in TCAT Hartsville’s welding technology program, taking advantage of the new TN Promise scholarship, which paid 100 percent of his tuition. Halfway through the TCAT program, Roberts landed a part-time co-op welder position at G.F. Puhl Company and ended up finishing the twelve-month TCAT welding curriculum in less than nine months. Now a full-time welder/fabricator at G.F. Puhl Company, 21-year-old Roberts has already been on the job for more than two years. He believes that TCAT Hartsville prepared him well for life in the work world—and his employer agrees.

Epic Event Centre & Chef Christopher’s Catering Head southwest on Nashville Pike from the intersection of US 31E and TN 25, cross the tracks, and there it is: Epic Event Centre. This massive event space, one of the largest in Sumner County, is the site of weddings, special events, art shows, business meetings, concer ts, and more. For founders Chris and Brenda Newton, the creation of this sprawling complex is the realization of a lifelong dream.

Both came from humble beginnings. “We came from single family homes and there wasn’t a lot of money,” remembers Brenda. Chris left home at age 14, supporting himself working as a breakfast cook. After completing an apprenticeship program, he worked at various country clubs in the Nashville area.

Dissatisfaction with the status quo can be a powerful engine for business development.

Just ask Krissi Carr and Brittany Conn. Both kindergar ten teachers in the Sumner County School system, Krissi and Brittany noticed with concern that the incoming kindergarteners were missing important skills. “Kids were showing up thinking they

Along the way, Chris married Brenda and they settled in Nashville. While Chris cooked, Brenda worked as a Registered Nurse at a south Nashville hospital. As their family grew, Chris and Brenda decided to move to Westmoreland to raise their kids in a more rural environment.

Chris and Brenda launched Chef Christopher’s Catering in 2002. Chris catered small weddings on the side, while continuing to work as a chef.

“We were definitely operating on a shoestring,” Chris remembers. “I started with two chaffing dishes and a mirror.”

Eventually, Chris’ boss issued an ultimatum. “He told me to quit catering or quit my job. I quit my job.”

To make ends meet, Brenda took a full-time job at Sumner Regional Hospital.

“We survived on beans and cornbread during those early days,” Brenda recalls.

As the catering business grew, the Newtons could see that

could run all over the place,” Krissi remembers. “Most hadn’t started to write. Fine motor skills were undeveloped because kids weren’t playing with playdough and blocks. They were on tablets and playing video games, which doesn’t develop the same muscles. Most didn’t know their letters, sounds, numbers, or colors. I wanted to do something about it, so I approached Brittany with the idea of starting a school in December 2013. Elite Education opened its doors in June 2014.”

“Many of our Sumner County clients ended up taking their events to Nashville because no venue in the area could accommodate them,” Chris remembers. “ We catered these events, preparing food in our commercial kitchen in Westmoreland and hauling it down to Franklin.”

In 2010, after saving money and searching for the right property, they zeroed in on an old warehouse at 392 West Main Street in Gallatin.

“The space was rough, but we were determined to build the business with as little debt as possible,” recalls Brenda. “We financed the property and the construction, phasing our renovations over time and paying cash for as much as possible.” Today, Epic Event Centre boasts 30,000 square feet of indoor space and a 15,000 foot courtyard. The venue has five ballrooms and can host three weddings at the same time. The Newtons employee more than 20 full and part-time employees.

Epic Event Centre received statewide recognition for their accomplishments. The business was named the 2018 Rural-Owned Small Business of the Year by the Tennessee District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The award is presented each year to a business in a healthy financial condition that has demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity while giving back to the community.

Now, the New tons are pondering their exit strategy.

Chef Christopher is semiretired, and the couple’s sons are running the company.

“One of our boys works the front of the house and the other two are in the kitchen,” says Brenda. “It has been wonderful running a business where we get to see our kids every day. We are very blessed.”

“We are preparing kids for kindergarten and beyond,” adds Krissi. “Kids come in at different levels. We take each child and find out what his or her strengths and weaknesses are. We then design customized plans to strengthen the weaknesses and make the strengths even stronger. We challenge kids at all levels.”

In addition to customized learning, Elite Education provides a morning and

afternoon snack for children; parents provide lunch. The school is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and follows the Sumner County school schedule.

“We’re closed during fall, winter, and spring break,” notes Brittany. “During the summer, we offer care for school-age kids.”

T he demand for Elite Education’s services has been strong, and the company has already relocated to larger

shop where he continued to hone the mechanic skills he had been practicing since the age of 15. “After seven years of working for someone else, Jeff decided that he wanted to start a shop of his own,” remembers Amanda. “We both felt led by the Lord to start a business. We prayed over every detail.”

The couple searched for a location near their home in Hendersonville but ended up at 128 E. Schell Street in Gallatin where the rent was more affordable. Both sets of parents traveled from Mississippi on weekends, pulling all-nighters to get the shop set up. “This truly is a family-run business,” notes Amanda. “Ever yone is involved, including our daughters, Trinity and Alayna.”

The business rolled in. For the first five months, Jeff handled repair work and office tasks on his own. In February 2018, he hired another mechanic to assist. Amanda’s 15-yearold daughter, Trinity, provides administrative support during school breaks and in the summer months. Customers feel at home in the office, thanks to the comfortable décor and the warm greeting.

“Everyone loves interacting with Trinity’s smiling face,” says Amanda, who left her job as the assistant manager of a local bank in July 2018 to assume a full-time business management role for the company.

Growth has been robust, thanks to word of mouth and Jeff’s reputation as an honest mechanic. “A few Facebook posts now and then are all we do for advertising,” notes

Growth shows no signs of slowing. “There are 100 kids on our wait list, including ten kids who were born in 2018,” Brittany adds. “Some parents put their kids on the wait list as soon as they’re born, even though we can’t accept children until they turn two.

It sounds crazy, but parents want to make sure they get their place in line.”

Amanda. “Most people say they heard about us from our 5-star reviews on Facebook and Google, and then we get a lot of repeat business. In fact, we have 21 cars that need repairs sitting in our parking lot right now.”

Mooney’s Automotive Repair & Performance is a NAPA Autocare Center. Work comes with a two-year 24,000-mile warranty on parts and labor.

“We do just about everything,” adds Amanda. “We’re a onestop shop.”

saw an old camera lying there,” Richard remembers. “It was a full manual camera with film.

She told me to take it home and play with it. I shot some images, got them developed, and fell in love with it.”

RICHARD SUTER:

RICHARD SUTER PHOTOGRAPHY How does a man who spent 27 years selling cars end up being a respected photographer known for capturing some of the most iconic images of Gallatin? Richard Suter knows.

Richard took the scenic route to become a photographer.

His first career was in the auto business; he started selling cars at Dunn Pontiac Buick in Madison at the tender age of 19. “I sold cars for ten years, was a sales manager for another ten years, and then spent the last seven years as the general sales manager.

Photography was initially a hobby. “I was at my sister’s house one day in 1991 and

Richard made it a point to learn everything he could about photography. “It was a daily competition with myself,” he says, looking back. “Can I get that shot? Can I do better today than I did yesterday? I would get up at 4:30 a.m., get in my car to shoot something, and then go to my job at the car dealership. Then I would stay up late to look at the images.”

After about a decade of amateur photography, Richard started getting some paying work that he could complete before and after his job at the car dealership. The turning point happened after Richard’s f irst wife passed away.

“Something like that makes you take stock of your entire life,” he admits. “I realized that I didn’t love my job anymore and that life was short.”

In 2008, Richard was finally ready to make the break. “I

made that decision in an hour,” Richard recalls. “I was at work and thought, my mind is not here. It’s time to leave.” He gave his notice at the car dealership and then told his second wife, Elizabeth, about his decision.

“It was definitely a leap of faith but it was an easier transition for me because I’ve always been in jobs where the pay is commission-based.”

Leveraging his network of contacts, Richard got a job shooting album covers for a former auto customer, a woman who owned a marketing agency and had been encouraging him to make the transition to photography.

“She told me how to make it work,” Richard notes. “She said, ‘Don’t change anything from the way you’ve handled your clients in the car business. Just duplicate that, and you’ll never go a day without shooting.’ I’ve never forgotten that.”

For Richard, there’s not much difference between taking pictures and selling cars. “I do the same thing as a photographer today that I did all those years in the car business,” he laughs. “People

have always disliked car shopping, and almost no one likes having their picture taken.

It’s all about the experience.”

Interactions with people are one thing; producing a quality product is another.

“Connecting with people is 60 percent of what I do; the other 40 percent is producing images they love,” Richard adds. His unique approach and undeniable talent have made him one of the most sought-after photographers in M i d dl e Te n n e s s e e.

His client roster includes marketing companies based in the Nashville area, banks, healthcare companies with hospitals in the region, Sumner County Tourism, several local Chambers of Commerce, several universities, and more than 20 corporations. Richard has been the photographer behind the stunning images in the Gallatin City Guide since the publication’s inception, and he is in his twelfth season as one of the Tennessee Titan’s four staff photographers.

“My favorite saying is under promise and over produce,” adds Richard. “It’s not hard at all, when you love your work as much as I do.” § www.GallatinTN.org

That’s how the day goes in the Gallatin Economic Development Agency (EDA).

W

ork is fast-paced and time-sensitive, and we’re usually driving more than several projects at the same time. So we’re designing our own version of an HOV lane.

The City ’s adoption of a strategic plan was the first step in helping the Gallatin EDA better identify how many lanes we want on our work highway and what type of traffic will be in each lane. The City’s plan includes a section on economic development, “Resilient and Diversified Economy,” with five overall goals: • Expand Workforce Training Partnerships • Build up from the Current Economic Base • Improve Transportation and Communit y Infrastructure • Market SR 386 and SR 109 • Actively Prepare Sites for Future Employment Growth These may seem like specific topics, but each one has dozens of potential action items – that is, lots of cars in our EDA traffic lanes.

Less than a month after the City formally adopted the Strategic Plan, the Gallatin EDA Board held its own planning session to rank these action items in a way

that would maximize our time and our funding – narrow our lanes. We needed to identify premier indus tries and businesses that will elevate median income, create the least impact on workforce availability, and add more career management jobs.

We also needed to concentrate more of our internal and communi t y fo c us on workforce training to address skills certification, technology advancements, existing education programs, corporate investment, and even something as simple as showing up for work.

“Gallatin has been growing at the rate of 270 people per month,” said James Fenton, the EDA Executive Director.

“That growth is partly because of Nashville’s tremendous popularity, but more because of Gallatin’s success in adding nearly 4,000 manufacturing and distribution jobs over the last several years.”

The City Council established the Gallatin EDA Office in 1999 as a hybrid department.

The agenc y is governed by a five-member board recommended by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Along with Fenton, the agency has two other employees – Special Projects

Over its nearly two decades, the Gallatin EDA has seen the community’s unemployment rate fluctuate from 2.3% in May 1999, to 10.6% in June 2009, and back to 2.4% in mid-2018.

“Right now, our low unemployment rate and the popularity of the Middle Tennessee region allow us to be more selective in the type and size of business we choose to recruit,” said Fenton.

“But any EDA director worth their salt will tell you that the backbone of your community is your existing industry.

That is why one of our key missions is expansion and retention of what we already have.”

Going into its strategic plan session, the Gallatin EDA Board first looked at

its previously established basic goals: recruit new businesses and jobs, take care of existing industry, and recruit new retail. The group then added the five goals adopted in the City’s Strategic Plan.

They funneled their focus to two: Build Up from the Current Economic Base and Expand Workforce Training Partnerships.

The Gallatin EDA invited members of the Industrial Development Board to participate in the strategic planning. The Industrial Development Board is charged with managing the City’s industrial centers.

The group spent hours brainstorming, discussing, and prioritizing.

“Having this planning session helped us underscore the opportunity Gallatin has to attract data centers,” Fenton said.

“Without getting too techy, our Industrial Center has water lines and a new electric substation – and that’s what data centers need, power and water.”

“Data centers bring fewer jobs than a manufacturing plant, so they won’t cannibalize our existing industr y workforce,” Fenton explained. “And a data center is fairly low impact. They like to be quiet and innocuous.”

Other outcomes of the strateg y sessions include encouragement of entrepreneurship, public-private par tnerships, and recruitment of corporate headquarters. (continued) www.GallatinTN.org

BUSINESS Update “Gallatin has the only lake front property left in Middle Tennessee for a corporate headquarters,” Fenton said. “It would be ideal to form a partnership with a private entity to co-develop a corporate office building on that site to market, much like a spec building for industry.”

The group also identified several key action items for workforce, including: better marketing of existing certification

and degree programs with scholarships, training on basic job expectation skills, and a technology boot camp.

“Overall, this session helped us drill down into our mission and goals,” Fenton said. “But it doesn’t stop here. Our plan is a living document that will be revisited and tweaked often.”

Now the Gallatin EDA has an HOV lane – a group of goals and projects that we consider our highest priority. We now have the ability to move projects into the slow lane, or merge them into another project, or even exit them from the highway.

It’s all about maximizing our time and taxpayer money to achieve success and opportunity for Gallatin. §

allatin is serious about small business development. In 2018, the city partnered with the State of Tennessee Community Development, Downtown Gallatin Main Street Program, and the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce to debut Startup Gallatin, a ten-week curriculum to equip aspiring business owners with the insights, relationships, and tools needed to turn ideas into thriving businesses.

Program organizers licensed the training materials from CO.STARTERS, a Chattanooga-based company that focuses exclusively on the start-up and growth of lifestyle small businesses. “We chose CO.STARTERS because they have a demonstrated track record of success

helping individuals seed and grow their business,” said Kim Baker, CEO of the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce.

The initial cohort of Startup Gallatin, which kicked off in the first quarter of 2018, was a success. “Thirteen would-be entrepreneurs began the program,” said Baker. “Nine made it the full ten weeks to the pitch session to present their business plans to a panel of public and private investors for a chance to win a cash award of up to $3,500.”

Attrition is built into the process.

“The curriculum is designed to help participants determine whether they are truly equipped to run a successful business,” Baker noted. “Some realized

along the way that they weren’t ready to make the personal, professional, or financial sacrifices needed to build a successful enterprise. Others realized that they needed more capital or that their business ideas needed to be refined before they could be successful.”

Participants met for three hours each week at 106 Public Square, covering mission-critical topics such as marketing, customer relations, sales, distribution, legal issues, and financial structures, with a subject matter expert offering real-life perspectives in each class. Participants were given assignments each week, such as completing a customer count, speaking to as many potential customers as possible, and shadowing a potential

purchaser. Reporting their results to the rest of the class each week gave participants plenty of opportunities for constructive feedback.

During the program’s tenth week, participants practiced presenting their business plans to each other in preparation for the official pitch night at the Palace Theatre. That night, The Happy Campers walked away with first prize, with KB Popcorn taking second place, and Rosie’s Blessing Boxes coming in third.

The training is free for participants, thanks to a grant from the State of Tennessee’s Main Street Program. “If you enrolled in a program like Startup Gallatin at a business incubator in Nashville, it could cost $1,000 or more,” Baker added.

ONE PUBLIC SQUARE When Clay Haynes purchased the Suddarth Building in early 2015, he had big dreams for the nearly 100-year-old beauty on Gallatin’s historic square. Clay imagined reviving a once beloved building to create a space where ambitious small business owners could prosper. Today, 106 Public Square, a beautiful, sunlit space that serves as an occupational dormitor y of sorts for a variety of creative professionals, is home to writers, graphic designers, non-profits, and many other small businesses. “We like to work with a broad range of folks,” said Clay. “There is strength in diversity. That’s what makes communities resilient.”

Before launching 106 Public Square, Clay developed a reputation for his skill at finding old buildings, breathing new life into them, and enhancing property values in the process. One of Clay’s primary goals for the Suddarth Building was to create a modernistic space that preserved the building’s historic integrity. Reincarnated as 106 Public Square, the Suddarth Building achieves this delicate balance. For instance, the building’s century-old white ceiling remains untouched while many of the building’s other historic attributes, like the opening alleyway, are amplified to have a 1920’s look.

Since 2016, Simply Done has devoted itself to helping businesses promote their stories through high-quality video for an affordable price. The company’s founder, Josh Curd, has had a life-long passion for video-making since receiving an unforgettable Christmas gift. “When I was 10, my grandmother gave me a VCR camera,” remembered Josh, who comes from a long line of small business owners and entrepreneurs. “I was obsessed with that camera and started making movies from there.”

Design. Before launching Simply Done, Josh spent many years filming weddings. His company, Little Josh Productions, has filmed more than 200 weddings in just five years. Though Josh still enjoys capturing wedding memories for clients, his passion these days is producing quality promotional videos for small business clients. Despite his ambitious goal—he plans to build the video business into a national brand with more than 100 employees—Josh intends to keep his headquarters firmly planted in Gallatin. “Though the plan is to provide affordable video solutions for small businesses, I will help all businesses,” he noted. “I want our clients to look and sound great without having to rely on a cell phone.”

For Josh, one of the best things about doing business from 106 Public Square is the downtown area’s inspiring revitalization.

“There are so many new businesses coming into the downtown area and I’m glad to be a part of that positive energy,” added Josh. “I’ve lived in Gallatin my whole life. It’s inspiring to be part of the revitalization of my hometown.”

PRAESENTIA, INC. What does Praesentia mean? It’s a question founder Gayla Zoz hears a lot. “Praesentia is a Latin word that means ‘powerfully present,’” said Gayla, who launched her marketing consulting, commercial writing, and public relations firm in 2001 after 15 years of working for one of the world’s largest commercial printers. “Everything I did during my corporate career, including high-profile projects in the United Kingdom, Latin America, and China, prepared me for what I do today.”

“I was working on an article about Clay Haynes and his renovation of the Suddarth Building when I realized that the space he was creating would be perfect for a one-person business like mine.”

Gayla’s client roster includes companies in dozens of industries. “I can be writing a strategic marketing plan for a municipality after breakfast, producing a video for a manufacturer before lunch, creating a website content plan for a lawyer in the afternoon, and writing social media posts for a non-profit at the end of the day,” noted Gayla, who has also served as editor of the annual Gallatin City Guide for the last five years. “No two days are the same and that’s how I like it.”

Before moving to 106 Public Square, Gayla worked out of an office in her home, connecting with out-of-town clients by video conference and meeting local clients in coffee shops. “I’ve made deals in every Starbucks within a 100mile radius of Nashville,” she laughed. As she watched Gallatin’s historic square come back to life, Gayla reconnected with a long-forgotten dream of having an office in a historic building.

A chance meeting during the production of the 2016 Gallatin City Guide moved her one step closer to realizing that dream. “I was working on an article about Clay Haynes and his renovation of the Suddarth Building when I realized that the space he was creating would be perfect for a one-person business like mine.”

What does Gayla like best about doing business at 106 Public Square? “I love the character of the building and the modern amenities like ultra-fast internet,” she added. “I also like being part of the community of business owners in the building. But the best part is that my office is right above Umbra Coffee, which means a steady supply of espresso.”

LEGAL AID SOCIETY As Managing Attorney for the Gallatin office of Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Zac Oswald oversees the team that provides legal services to low-income and elderly people in Macon, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, and Wilson Counties. The non-profit seeks to bring safety, justice, and stability to people in volatile situations who are looking for a brighter future.

Legal Aid Society was previously located on North Water Avenue, but building repairs forced the organization to find a new home. “The location right across from the courthouse is ideal,” said Zac, a graduate of University of Miami School of Law. “It’s now much easier for judges and clerks to send us people who need—but can’t afford—a private attorney.”

Working at 106 Public Square has connected Zac to a warm and welcoming community. But that’s not the best part of the experience. “The biggest rewards come from helping people,” noted Zac. “Many of the people we represent lack the advantages that others take for granted.

Some are not as well educated as others. Some are incapable of representing themselves in a courtroom. They all have rights that need to be protected, and it’s very satisfying to play a role in helping them stabilize their lives.”

Located on the ground floor of 106 Public Square, Umbra Coffee is a contemporary gathering place. Chic, comfortable, and inviting, Umbra Coffee draws everyone from the employees of nearby law firms on their way to work to people strolling around the square attracted by the shop’s enticing aromas.

Co-owned by Nathan Gifford, Umbra Coffee was launched in 2017 just before the solar eclipse, deriving its name from the term for the shadow cast by a celestial object during an eclipse. “I’m a big fan of Gallatin,” said Gifford, who also owns Gifford’s Bacon and Prime South Meats, and, with Andy Fields, co-owns Prime Project Group, all headquartered in Nashville. “We want to be of service to the community.”

In addition to premium coffees, Umbra offers a seasonallydriven menu of food made with locally-sourced ingredients.

“We rely heavily on farmers from Sumner County and the surrounding area,” said Nathan. “Just about everything on our menu comes from Tennessee.” There’s also a wellstocked deli case with a variety of grab-and-go items, and a selection of curated retail items from Tennessee companies.

Gifford has big plans for the space, including opening a catering arm of the business and renting the space for events. He also plans to host a guest chef series and a variety of seasonally-themed special events. “Gallatin is a wonderful place that deserves attention,” added Nathan.

“This is the first project Prime Project Group has planned for Gallatin—and it probably won’t be the last.”

Gallatin, Tennessee is one of them. In 2017, Reader’s Digest magazine sent out the call for nominations for the “Nicest Place in America.” Thousands of votes were cast, and Gallatin, “a town of Southern charm, a town of giving and charity, a town of faith, prayer and an earnest desire to do better” was voted the “Nicest Place in America” for 2017. The back story is one of true grit, amazing grace, and of a community coming together, or in the words of Pastor Derrick Jackson, “…to do what others feel is impossible.” The award earned Gallatin the cover story for the November 2017 issue of Reader’s Digest magazine.

What’s behind Gallatin’s growing prosperity? Could positive relationships between city leaders be the secret ingredient? The editor of Gallatin City Guide chatted with Kim Baker, Donna Belote, Paige Brown, and James Fenton, four of Gallatin’s most visible city leaders, to discover the secrets behind their success.

mall towns in America aren’t always known for their progressive leadership. But Gallatin isn’t just another small town. It’s a special place where city leaders genuinely enjoy working together. “We all need to be on the same page, and we are,” said Donna Belote, Executive Director of Downtown Gallatin, a non-profit dedicated to the revitalization of the city’s central business district. “Collaboration is the key.”

Paige values the passion and brainpower that each person brings. “We all care a lot about Gallatin,” she said. “We put our personal issues aside and focus on the greater good. This benefits our entire city.”

What does collaboration look like to Gallatin’s leaders? It starts by honoring what each person brings to the table. “Everyone’s unique strengths work together to help shape the city’s direction,” said James Fenton, Executive Director of Gallatin Economic Development Agency, the award-winning catalyst for Gallatin’s renaissance as a retail and commercial center.

Gallatin Mayor Paige Brown agrees. “Relationships are how things get done,” said Paige, who was elected in November 2018 to her second term as Mayor. “We all have different strengths, skills, networks, and resources. When we pool those, it’s fabulous.”

Collaboration is easy when you like the people you work with, and these four clearly enjoy their interactions. “It’s like working with friends,” said Kim. “We’re in constant communication via text or phone call, and we all share an open-door policy that makes it easy to drop in and talk about ideas.” For Paige, the ability to think outside the box is vital. “I work with James, Donna, and Kim almost every day,” she said. “We’re all really good at brainstorming because we focus on solutions, not obstacles.”

Sharing credit and blame is also important. “No one is concerned about who gets the credit as long as the task gets done for the community,” said Kim Baker, Chief Executive

Paige, Kim, Donna, and James worked together to help Gallatin leverage its freshlyminted image to attract visitors.

“We all worked together on the city’s brand identity, website, and promotional initiatives that have enhanced Gallatin’s image in the region and beyond,” said Kim. “After thousands of people descended on Gallatin to view the eclipse, we all sat down to talk about what we could do to bring those people back. The Fire on the Water Music Festival is just one of the ideas that came out of that discussion.”

Creating an environment where innovation can thrive is another by-product of success ful collaboration.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure that Gallatin feels like a safe and comfortable place for a young professional to live and work,” said Kim, noting that the Chamber rebooted the Young Professionals Group of Gallatin as Gallatin Emerging Talent (GET) in 2016. “Paige gave me

What’s most rewarding about being a city leader in Gallatin? For Donna, it’s watching programs and events generate excitement in the community. For Kim, it’s the opportunity to be a cheerleader for the city. “Being a leader in Gallatin means that I get to represent the city I love in the way I like to do it,” she said. For Paige, the reward comes from being able to play a role in creating a city that’s attractive to young people. “When I was growing up here, Gallatin wasn’t a place I wanted to live,” said Paige. “But things are very different today.

People who love our city’s character and personality are the ones who will make Gallatin unique for generations to come.” James likes the unsolicited positive feedback he receives from the city’s residents. “A few times each year, I’ll be standing in line in a store and someone will tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘Weren’t you involved in this expansion?’ or “Didn’t you have something to do with that company coming to town?’” James said. “One woman told me that she was able to get a job and keep her house. Another said that getting a job in Gallatin made it possible for her to move back to the city and see her grandkids on a regular basis. It’s very gratifying to hear how our work is changing lives.”

Ultimately, Kim Baker, Donna Belote, Paige Brown, and James Fenton are all working toward the same goal—to make Gallatin a better place to live—and they’re having a great time doing it. §

Gap Inc.’s Gallatin Distribution Center recently received industry recognition, winning Parcel Magazine’s 2017 Game Changer of the Year award, which honors distribution facilities that have overcome significant challenges through innovation within their smallparcel operation. For the Gallatin Distribution Center, challenges included explosive growth in e-commerce orders coupled with the increase of product and resources due to a fire at a sister distribution center that swiftly activated the company’s business continuity plans. “The automation and technology we tested in Gallatin in response to these challenges was hugely successful and will eventually be deployed in other distribution centers,” said Spivey.

y name is Jane Doe. Actually, that’s not my real name. When I decided to moonlight as an amateur food critic, I wanted to fly under the radar. What better way to do that than to adopt a nom de plume and assign fake names to the band of friends who volunteered to join me on a culinary tour of Gallatin?

When it comes to great places to eat, Gallatin is blessed for a town of its size. There’s a nice selection of unique independent restaurants along with the national names everyone knows and loves. Over the course of a month in the 2018 summer heat, our merry band of Secret Foodies met for lunch at five local eateries. Here’s what happened.

Stop #1:

Cancun Lagoon

In my opinion, Mexican restaurants come in two flavors: predictable and extraordinary. Which would Cancun Lagoon be? Cleo, Anthony, Kenneth, Barbara, Francesca, and I arrived at 382 Sumner Hall Drive on a sweltering June day to find out.

As our eyes adjusted to the cool darkness, we were greeted by owner Alvaro Garcia, who purchased the restaurant in 2017 and has somehow made this thriving eatery even more popular. Was it the basketfuls of warm nacho chips, served with a unique salsa and creamy queso, which seemed to replenish magically, thanks to Ismael, our attentive server?

Was it the 2-for-1 margaritas? Was it the generous daily specials?

What happens when a wanna-be culinary critic and her foodie friends go undercover to visit some of Gallatin’s most popular eateries?

Gallatin City Guide investigates with this first-person account of gastronomic intrigue.

We were determined to find out. We chomped our way through a bottomless basket of nacho chips and, when they arrived, dug into our entrees, breaking etiquette rules by the dozen as we reached across the table to share forkfuls of goodies. As the meal was ending, I looked around. On this Tuesday afternoon, Cancun Lagoon was busy. Servers flitted here and there, smiling and talking to customers. People streamed in. Alvaro Garcia surveyed it all with a smile.

What did we think of Cancun Lagoon?

The consensus was clear. Cancun Lagoon was an extraordinary Mexican restaurant. We vowed to return one day after work without our disguises to enjoy the 2-for-1 margarita specials.

Osaka

At noon sharp on the summer solstice, Cleo, Jean, Kenneth, and I met at Osaka, located at 223 West Main Street. Situated in what was once a Shoney’s, Osaka bills itself as a Japanese steakhouse. Don’t be fooled. You can find all kinds of Asian foods here. Friends have always raved about Osaka’s sushi and their hibachi selections. Would today’s visit live up to the billing?

Leading us past the glowing sushi bar, the server seated us at a table partially surrounded by a shimmering metallic curtain. Kenneth, camera in tow, couldn’t resist getting a few concept shots.

After enjoying petite salads and cups of miso soup, we watched wide-eyed as the entrees were presented. Jean ordered vegetable fried rice and the Shaggy Dog Roll, an elaborate sushi roll topped with shredded crab that made this concoction

of shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, shredded crab, spicy mayo, and eel sauce bear an eerie resemblance to an Old English Sheep Dog. The taste was divinely Asian.

Cleo ordered the Fire Sakura Roll, which turned out to be the showstopper.

Served engulfed in flames, this sushi roll is made with tempura shrimp, avocado, and crab topped with eel, ebi, spicy mayo, eel sauce, and sweet miso. After the fire died down, I waited a respectful moment for Cleo to take her first bite, then dove in with my chopsticks to snag a hunk for myself.

I decided to go big with the Sashimi Deluxe, 18 pieces of assorted sashimi on a bed of ice and lettuce. This was the biggest pile of raw fish I’d ever seen outside the grocer’s seafood case. A wood accent piece, twigs wired together to fashion what looked like a garden accessory, served as an interesting backdrop for the pescatarian feast. After sampling tastes of the ultra-fresh tuna, crab, salmon, and whitefish on their own, I dipped a bite of each into the soy/ wasabi/ginger concoction I’d whipped up. After eating my fill, I still had more than half the dish to go. I wasn’t alone.

Everyone had enough left over for at least one additional meal.

While we waited on to-go boxes, Kenneth fashioned the wood accent piece into a scraggly hipster goatee as we reached a consensus on our experience. Osaka is a must-do for anyone looking for authentic Asian food in the 37066.

Prince Street Pizza&Pub

It was a humid mid-July day when I met Secret Foodie Squad members Kenneth, Anthony, Cleo, Francesca, and Jolene at 123 E. Prince Street for our next outing.

Today’s target: Prince Street Pizza, an interesting little pub where scribbling on the walls isn’t just tolerated, it’s encouraged.

Since Prince Street Pizza & Pub opened in 2016, I’ve heard people whispering about the addictive nature of the pub’s menu items. Could it be true? Would one bite of Prince Street pizza be too many?

Would a thousand never be enough?

The Secret Foodie Squad, sporting elastic waist pants and empire waist dresses, aimed to find out. We gathered at the counter and surveyed the menu.

I was immediately taken. With pizza names like The Cutlass Supreme, The Animal, and The Always Sunny, it was clear that owners Brad Singleton and Spencer Wakefield had a wry a sense of humor. Finally, after much deliberation, we settled on two medium pizzas and two appetizers.

After finding seats at a large table covered with graffiti, I looked around. It was noon on a weekday and the place was bustling like a Friday night. When our appetizers arrived, I took my first bite and started to understand the fuss.

The Prince Stix, oven-glazed pizza dough French fries tossed in garlic butter and sprinkled with Parmesan, were addictive on their own but were especially potent as a transport vehicle for Prince Street Pizza’s savory marinara sauce. The Cheesy Cheese Bread, essentially a double cheese pizza without the sauce, was melt-in-your-mouth good.

After sampling all the pizzas, I felt compelled to counter the savory taste with something sweet. Fortunately, Prince Street Pizza & Pub offers several bite-sized treats from Nashville favorite Sam T. Spoonlickers, and I finished the meal with a cup of Reese’s Pieces Cookie Dough ice cream.

Is Prince Street Pizza & Pub a purveyor of legally addictive carbohydrates? Possibly.

Will the Secret Foodie Squad go back for more? Definitely. As we floated out of the pub, we were already plotting an afterwork visit to enjoy a Cheeseburgler pizza washed down with one (or more) of their many Tennessee-made craft beers on tap, including local favorites concocted

Filly’s Game &Grill While schedule conflicts kept many of the Secret Foodie Squad away from our fourth restaurant stop, Kenneth was able to meet me at 102 North Water Avenue to try out the recently-launched Filly’s Game & Grill. The expansive space, once home to Crescent City Gallatin, has been transformed into equal parts arcade, restaurant, and family-friendly meeting space. Most of the half-dozen TV screens were showing 90s-era televisions shows, giving the space a comfortably retro vibe.

For a restaurant just a few weeks after opening, Filly’s Game & Grill seemed to be at the top of their game. The line to order was seven deep, and the dining area was filling quickly. In the arcade, children bounced between video games and bites of hot dogs and fries while their parents chatted. Two young men were playing pool while a pair of teenage girls tested their air hockey skills.

The Classic Filly was almost upstaged by the delectable Sidewinder Fries.

Deciding what to order was a challenge—in a good way. What do you order when you want to say, “I’ll have one of everything?” Filly’s specializes in sandwiches, including several types of grilled cheese and about a dozen variations of the Philadelphia Cheesesteak. Eventually, I settled on the Classic Filly. Filly’s version of the famed classic comes topped with Cheese Whiz, a rarity outside of Philadelphia. Cleo had tipped me off about the Sidewinder Fries, a basket of thick, spiral cut battered potatoes, so I added some to my order.

After finding a seat and waiting for food to come out, I felt a pull toward the back of the arcade. There it was, gleaming like Oz off in the distance: Skeeball, my all-time favorite game. I changed a few dollars into quarters and played while Kenneth chatted with friends from the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce.

With each roll, I could feel my SkeeBall chops kicking in, and when I landed a ball in the 50-point hole, I jumped for joy. It felt wonderfully energizing to be in a

family-friendly arcade environment that wasn’t sensory overload. Filly’s struck just the right balance.

When the food arrived, I wasn’t disappointed. The Classic Filly lived up to its billing, with steak, grilled peppers, onion, provolone, and Cheese Whiz heaped on a perfectly-toasted bun. Each bite was a sloppy, delicious piece of Philly heaven. The sandwich fell apart halfway through, but I didn’t care. The Sidewinder Fries, surprisingly crispy, salty, and delicious, were in a league of their own.

FOOD & SHOPPING Filly’s Game & Grill fills a gap in Gallatin’s restaurant scene. As Kenneth and I headed back to our respective workplaces, we were already plotting ways to spend a few evenings here with our spouses and families to enjoy the food, listen to live music, and exercise our dominance in the arcade.

Stop #5:

Starr Ranch Our final stop was Starr Ranch at 170 North Water Street on the edge of Gallatin’s historic square district. Friends had tipped me off about the food, raving about stick-to-your-ribs southern dishes with names like Flat Tire Chicken, but no one had said a thing about the lovely first impression that this restaurant’s freshly-renovated interior makes. Would the Starr Ranch’s menu options be as impressive as the surroundings?

Not long after we were seated in a roomy, tetrahedron-shaped booth that comfortably accommodated our party of hungry Secret Foodies, two quintessentially southern appetizers appeared: Fried Pickles and Fried Green Tomatoes. The tomatoes were breaded to perfection and served with homemade pimento cheese and Starr Ranch’s own Due South Mayo. The crisp and tangy pickle spears were served with a delectable chipotle ranch dressing.

Everyone swore they were trying to save room for the entrees—yet the appetizers were gone in seconds.

Starr Ranch is known for their massive portions. It’s possible to eat light when you visit, especially during the lunch hour, but when you see what’s served,

so creamy that I knew it was just a matter of time before I disregarded the bounds of propriety and helped myself to a bite while she was looking the other way.

Starr Ranch didn’t just live up to the hype, it exceeded it. We all agreed that Starr Ranch needed to be moved to the top of the list for places to bring out-oftown guests.

My selection, the Bacon Wrapped Smoked Meatloaf, was so towering that it should have been served with a red light on top to warn away oncoming aircraft. Wrapped in smoked applewood bacon, the two massive slabs of meatloaf had a distinctly smoky flavor that was a nice counterpoint to the garlic mashed potatoes, broccoli, crispy fried onion rings, and BBQ sauce.

you may not want to. We didn’t. Lawrence ordered the STARR-BQ Sandwich, house-smoked pulled pork with handcut cider slaw, pickle, and BBQ sauce on a toasted split-top bun. Barbara’s Shrimp Feast featured beautifully-presented skewers of grilled shrimp served with sweet potato fries, hush puppies, and cocktail sauce. Francesca was also in a shrimp mood, and her Street Tacos didn’t disappoint. Served on griddle tortillas, her grilled shrimp was topped with a tomato lime cilantro slaw, blended cheeses, and Starr Ranch’s proprietary due south sauce.

Jean got the Tennessee BLT, an interesting take on the classic featuring grilled Texas toast with fried green tomatoes, “Not Yo Mama’s” pimento cheese, Due South Mayo, bacon, and lettuce. Cleo, seated to my left, went rogue and ordered a grilled chicken sandwich off-menu along with a side of White Mac & Cheese, that looked

When the server asked us if we cared for dessert, Francesca moaned, Cleo clutched her stomach, and Kenneth laughed as we answered “YES” in unison.

A few minutes later, a massive Peach Cobbler with four forks was on the table waiting to be devoured. After a bit of seat-shifting and a few adjustments to belt buckles, the peach cobbler was history. I would have licked the bowl had I not been in such polite company.

Starr Ranch didn’t just live up to the hype, it exceeded it. We all agreed that Starr Ranch needed to be moved to the top of the list for places to bring out-oftown guests.

Ultimately, our month-long Secret Foodie expedition confirmed what the locals already know: when it comes to scoring great eats, there’s no need to leave the Gallatin city limits. §

Glittering lights. Nippy temperatures. Happy faces.

It’s the holiday season in Gallatin! Just about every neighborhood in the city decks the halls for the yuletide season and the city’s event calendar is packed with events that delight young and old. The fun begins in early November with the annual Tinsel & Treasures Open House, a nearly 50-year tradition that marks the official start of the holiday shopping season at Gallatin’s finest retailers. During the first week of December, families bundle up to attend the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in the historic town square. A few weeks later, the Gallatin Christmas Parade marches from Sumner Regional Medical Center to Gallatin High School. Throughout the season, make it a point to enjoy holiday movie classics at The Palace Theatre, pick up a commemorative Christmas ornament from the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce, listen to church bell renditions of Christmas carols, and immerse yourself in the sounds of the season by attending holiday concerts held at schools and churches throughout the city. The holidays in Gallatin are the most magical time of the year!

FIRE ON THE WATER

Gallatin’s first-ever Fire on the Water music festival drew thousands to Lock 4 Park in Gallatin.

Featuring eleven bands on two waterfront stages as well as bonfires, food trucks, craft beer, fire entertainment, and a special VIP area, the festival played to an enthusiastic crowd on August 18, 2018. The festival is set to return August 3, 2019.

A few miles away, Awedaddy’s hosts bands that play classic rock favorites in a fun island-inspired setting. Grit Grace Grub, a self-guided culinary tour of Gallatin with bluegrass musicians performing at each stop, will be returning for its second year in September 2019. During the inaugural Grit Grace Grub in 2018, nearly 200 participants experienced the true taste of Gallatin at 20 dining establishments, with ten bluegrass artists playing live on the route.
