T

he buds are cracking and the days are getting longer – telltale signs that Spring is making its glorious entrance to my neck of the woods. It is the time of year full of life and renewal, and this issue of Gallant Magazine is a special one for me as it is the hallmark two-year anniversary issue. Time is so fluid and seems to gain velocity every year, making it seem incredible that two years have already come and gone.

Gallant Magazine originally started out as an extension of my blog, but it has now grown into so much more, giving me the opportunity to interact with the most talented people on the grid and to learn exciting new skillsets that come from working on a magazine.

Gallant Magazine would not be possible without a few key people, and I owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their help and guidance over the years. First, Apple Fall and Gac Akina made this humble venture possible with their encouragement and support. Apple nudged me to start Gallant when I was not even sure of myself that I could make it happen, and Gac helped me see the true possibilities of where Gallant could grow. To Vonda Volkov and Grant Young, your artistic vision and creativity are an inspiration not only to me, but to our growing base of loyal readers as well. You ensured that Gallant Magazine delivered the most stunning visual masterpieces to the grid. And to Scar Requiem, your behind the scenes efforts have helped grow our supporters and cemented Gallant as one of the premiere magazines in Second LifeTM. These people have been such a true bedrock of support, and their influence will continue to be felt in

each and every page of Gallant Magazine.

I have been so excited to release this special anniversary Spring issue. It is one of our largest issues to date, and it is chock full of amazing. Gallant is proud to feature an A-team for this release: with Ariskea spotlighted for Home & Garden and Ascend showcased for our Men’s Fashion feature. We are thrilled to welcome a few new photographers to our team: Geena Carminucci, Hikaru Kanzaki, Victor Miguel and Garreth Aurotharius! All of our stylists and photographers have outdone themselves this issue and continue to ensure Gallant Magazine is the definitive journal dedicated to Men’s Fashion and Home & Garden.

I also would be remiss if I did not thank a number of our creators who are supporting Gallant Magazine this issue by releasing gifts for our inworld group members: Noche, DaD Designs, Matova, Thirst and Senses.

here are moments every year that I look forward to, Spring is one of those moments. From the budding colors of new blossoms to the warmer weather that melts away the snow, it is a promise of new life and recreation. This issue was all about embodying the entire mood of spring, to which our photographers did just that and more. Each issue our creative visionaries out do themselves with beautiful images and ideas, this issue is one of my favorite we’ve done today. Packed full of content, the 2nd anniversary issue of Gallant is giving something for everyone. From the décor fanatic to the fashion crazed. We’ve highlighted some of the season’s biggest trends and have put a breath of fresh air into the classics.

Along with the amazing photo editorials, we have two amazing features. Ascend and Ariskea, both an expansive part of my inventory, are incredibly talented designers we chose to feature for this issue.

I have had the privilege of working with Invincible Anton in the past and can speak from personal experience that he is one of the most talented creators I’ve ever met; his attention to detail is spectacular. Diaxm of Ariskea is equally as talented and just as detail oriented when it comes to creating. Her items are some of my go-to creations when fine tuning my homes!

Thank you to both of them for giving us a look into their lives and

creating process as the featured designers of this issue!

For me, this issue goes without much explanation. My notes are fairly short because this issue is jammed pack full of beautiful things that words can’t even describe. I’d rather everyone get right to the core of the spring issue and dive in. Thank you so much to all of our hard working and insanely talented photographers, stylists, models, and writers! Creating each issue wouldn’t be possible without you!

ale fashion has evolved over time, and the latest trends for the upcoming season are often highlighted on real life runways during fashion weeks months in advance. Is it the model that struts the catwalk that defines these trends? No. It is the vision of the designer that is woven into threads that directs the course of style and what may very well be the future furor. Men in Second Life™ have oft complained about how limited their options are in comparison to female clothing. However, it is brands like Ascend that have emerged, expanded and taken male fashion to new heights.

Envisioned by Invincible Anton, Ascend stands at the very forefront of the best and most innovative of menswear in this virtual world. Introduced to Second Life™ by his real life best friend, Anton was told how interesting it is and the social aspect involved. Ironically, the first day he rezzed in-world was the day his best friend left. His early beginnings are humble, as he enjoyed spending time at Helping Hand where he found happiness by the pure joy of helping newcomers like himself. While he readily admits that it did take him some time to fully understand Second Life™, he first began working as a model and host at other clothing brands. His curious nature would have him wonder how clothing was made and how the businesses were run. In

his youth, he found great enjoyment from games, “[where] you would make animated games using flash and I learned the basics back in 2005.”

It was Anton’s inquisitive disposition that directed him towards 3D software and his diligence that drove him to learn these programs in 2013. While many look to him as an expert within his field, he is quick to say that it is a constant learning process, and he endeavors “to improve everyday.” Furthermore, he stresses how it did take him time to hone his craft, and his expectation was never for quick results.

His unassuming attitude is commendable, when he shares how grateful he is for those that have guided him, “I am blessed I had good friends who always were there to support me and teach me.” This idea is further perpetuated when he confesses that when he started his brand in 2015, he was “a total noob about running a business.”

Despite this, he quickly grasped the intricacies of how to lead his brand with the mantra, “Improve the quality, keep learning.” It is this self-driven perspective that has brought him far in his journey and continually propels him to even more extraordinary achievements.

For those that dream of starting their own brand, Anton’s story serves as a great inspiration. His success was not founded overnight and was not wi-

thout difficulty. His greatest struggle as a creator in making 3D mesh clothes was to learn about skinning and rigging sizes. When he first began, mesh was still in its infancy — where very few people at the time fully understood the intricate details. Moreover, he had given up because his frustration was that insurmountable.

Yet, he shares how “there is always one nice person who come forward to help you like a life-saving jacket,” and how he credits these people for helping him overcome this obstacle.

When asked to describe the Ascend aesthetic, Anton considers the fate of menswear four years ago. His inherent business acumen recognized a growing gap in male fashion for those who sought casual everyday wear but still demanded style and elegance. Thus, he chose to create clothing that fell within the realm of “streetwear, urban style, casual, business casual, etc,” and on the rare occasion he designs formal wear. A visit to his main store highlights the true depth and variety his designs offer. With such detailed creations, one might wonder

what influences and inspires the Ascend Fashion Creative Designer’s work.

As expected, this is a question he is asked often; yet, it is also one that he finds difficulty in answering. The problem arises because the catalyst for his inspiration is not derived by one source. Some instances it is a customer that inquires about a specific style, or “It’s some real life friends who are good at styling.” The culmination is that his innovation and inventiveness is drawn from a variety of things that can change in an instant but will ultimately be realized in the art of his product.

With the time and effort Anton dedicates to his craft, the idea of a favorite piece would tease the mind of more than one curious soul. Like the range of his collection, it would be an impossibility for him to anoint just one in such a coveted position. “I love all my work,” though he quickly adds in jest, “Even the ones that are not that good.” The gentle pride he takes in his craftsmanship speaks volumes, similar to the work he does showcase as a few of his most favored. There is the Johny outfit, a full ensemble that boasts fitted casual pants and a white

top that clings to the body. The unique detail is found in the rolled up sleeves, the tucked shirt, open chest and the timeless popped collar. Or there is the Enzo that Anton lists as well. A button up shirt, where the sleeves are rolled and bunched at the upper arm and the hem is not uniform to truly exude the concept of casual. Then it is the versatility of the Nicolas Blazer. A form fitted jacket with 3 shirt styles: the henley for streetwear, the untucked to highlight the devil-may-care attitude and the tucked button down if the circumstance demands a slightly more formal presence. The similar components of all three of his favorites? They met his desire of compatibility with everyday style, and he “had so much fun while making them.”

Second Life™ is a place that empowers its residents to do and be whatever they want. It is this unique characteristic that Anton considers to be part of what makes this world an amazing place, “I love how it makes you creative and gives you the opportunity to be someone else.” Being a longtime resident of this virtual world, he has seen much change; thus, even if he had the ability to change something — he would not. His belief is that it is perfect as is with Linden Labs “improving and bringing new features from time to time.” The positive outlook he has can only make one wonder what is in store for Ascend in the future.

The focus is to continue to enhance the quality of his mesh and texturing, while meeting the increased demand for footwear and women’s clothing. As for what he is most grateful for? “The love and motivation from all the custo-

mers who have supported me and my brand,” and it is this encouragement for him that has brought Ascend to the degree of success it has accomplished.

Ariskea

econd Life™ is essentially one large digital medium available for whatever purpose someone might use. Whatever wonders we can dream up in our minds can be created and exported right into the virtual grid for residents to enjoy. The clothing we wear, the avatars we choose, the homes we live in - all the way down to the scripts and codes we use to move us are all examples of this creativity in action.

When it comes to the homes we live in, the figurehead of acclaimed decor store Ariskea - Diaxm Resident, also known as Aris - consistently dreams up amazing items we just cannot live without.

Ariskea is a bohemian-inspired store that brings an eclectic vibe to Second Life ™. With its earthy toned items, floral patterns and all-around hippy attitude, Aris wanted to break down her inspiration and elaborate more on where she gets her style. One place she can spend hours at is a site called Anthropologies. “[That’s] where I get all of my inspiration, mostly because it [is] so relaxing and soft. I felt myself when I go look at their pages,” said Aris.

Beyond the presence of this wonderful boho aesthetic, Aris went on to say that she also gets inspiration from vintage 70’s looks and woody, earthy textures and feels. Growing up in the great woods of Canada, she learned to really appreciate the tones and textures that

nature has to offer and how time seems to never affect these gigantic behemoths of trees.

Those elder forests of lush greens might be akin to antiques in a way: something that stands the test of time, yielding remnants from the past and are appreciated in the present. Her mother is a fan of this style as well. Aris shared that she owns her grandmother’s old cabinet collection of so many precious 1970’s items. With all this inspiration and passion behind Aris, she channels this bohemian and vintage aesthetic and creates from her heart.

With Ariskea’s aesthetic cemented, or rather petrified in wood; let’s dig a little deeper on the origin story of Ariskea.

The year was 2012, and some friends of hers from IMVU were trying to get Aris to join a new social game. It was supposed to be this very immersive and gigantic platform. Needless to say Aris was nervous to join, having never been a part of something as sensational as Second Life™. But those friends who brought her to the grid set her at ease and thought she should take advantage of what Second Life™ has to offer by becoming a content creator.

And that is exactly what she did. Aris already had a background with IMVU with creating home & garden items, so bringing that same mentality to Second Life™ was not that large of a stretch.

“I love how [an] environment creates an atmosphere and ambiance. Seeing that we can build up a world made out of pixels and cubes is just mesmerizing,” said Aris.

Aris went on to talk about her love of video games, but Second Life™ was something totally different than what she thought it would be like. Once she logged in and saw other talented creators and bloggers alike using decorations to enhance an image, her desire to be a content creator was solidified. It was the simple love for creation that ignited her passion to stay and create.

Aris’ first store was called Oceana. To start, Oceana was a skin store that created system layer skins. Aris also made swimwear outfits and other accessories.

These outfits included bikinis and other bohemian beachy creations; again staying true to that vibe she brought with her to Ariskea. Regardless of how much time and energy she would put into Oceana, she felt like something was missing; a new challenge to attempt in Second Life™. Back in IMVU she was known for her home and garden creations. That was something she had yet to attempt in Second Life™ and that was exactly what she wanted to create.

That is when Ariskea was born. Aris said that a friend of her noted that her new store should be something like Ikea. For those unfamiliar with what Ikea is, it is a Norwegian home decor megastore known for their unique items and having nearly everything needed to decorate a home. So that is where the “-kea” section of Ariskea came from, but where does the rest come from? Aris’ name in

real life is Isabelle, so “-is-“ was added into the store’s name. Lastly, she wanted to have an “Ar-“ in the start of her new store’s name. Piecing everything together, Ar-is-kea is what she came up with.

With a fresh start to her new venture, Aris began learning how to mesh. To start out easy and test the waters, she mainly made accessories with plans to expand to decor once she was able get a better grip on meshing in Second Life™.

“I wanted to show what I could do and get better because for me, it was about my personal journey to learning [how to mesh],” Aris said.

Seeing other people´s creations, Aris wanted what she was releasing to be perfect and to make her customers happy so she could be proud of what she was creating. She was so inspired by other designer’s works that it drove her to be better. After a while she came to the realization that she cannot be like someone else - she could only do the best Aris could do. That mindset has followed her along her journey with Ariskea, reminding her that her best is all that matters.

“The love for creating [has] never stopped.

It’s a never-ending love and seeing that I did improve over the years makes me so happy”, Aris noted.

Fast forward years later and Aris is still creating and expanding her Ariskea catalogue. In 2015 Ariskea released a collection named “Petite Paris”. It has a special place in Aris’ heart since releasing it. When asked if there is anything that might sit next to Petite Paris in her heart, Aris revealed that one of her newer

releases, “Louise” incorporates a painting she made in her real life.

“Louise is a collection [that involves] my last painting I did in real life. Louise is the woman in the painting, she is a character that looks at you from the frogtail plants,” Aris would go on to talk about how in her life she was going through a rough patch so this collection meant so much to her. It was quite personal to her, so of course, like Petite Paris, it has a special meaning. This was not the first time Aris released something in Ariskea that had her own paintings in them.

2017 was the first time she attempted to do this. The collection is called Kezia and received positive feedback. For Aris, being able to bring her real-life talents into her virtual world and mixing them to create something wonderful felt so great to her. That is all she could ask for: to be able to create and bring happiness to those who enjoy her work.
