Greetings!

I’ve read a lot of magazines during my time in Second Life, and I’ve even had the fortunate opportunity to participate in a few. I always read the editor’s notes and see comments about seasons moving along, change happening in one’s life, or some significant milestone life event taking place. Now that it is my turn to write the editor’s notes for Gallant’s second issue, I have been agonizing about what would capture a reader’s attention. It’s definitely no easy task, and I’ve settled on what will hopefully be a thought-provoking topic.

Let me explain: a few weeks ago I attended a seminar for my real life job where a speaker presented about a book titled Who Packs Your Parachute?. I think at first I made an off-handed joke about the title, but as I listened to the presentation it really started to hit home. The book details the account of a U.S. Navy pilot who was shot down and saved solely by the parachute on his back. Years later he met the man who packed his parachute and was ultimately responsible for saving his life. This man spent hours folding the parachute meticulously so that it would function, essentially holding in his hands the fate of the person wearing it. This man is someone we rarely think about, as we simply expect the parachute to open and function when we pull the chord.

The speaker then posed an interesting question: who packs your parachute?

Now by all means I am not equating this to some life-saving story of my own. But it got me thinking: who are those unsung heroes who help us out on a daily basis – supporting us, helping us or simply making our day better? Who goes out of their way to make your world a brighter place? With regards to my SL a few come to mind. First is Vonda Volkov, the new Assistant Editor for Gallant. His expertise and assistance have been a welcome addition to the team and he has brought to life the amazing second issue you are now reading. Second is Armani Torelli, someone who has been that cheerleader for me in the background, always providing support and believing in me when I was not even sure where to start. And last I have to acknowledge once again Gac Akina, an amazing person who always is there to provide guidance and also graces the cover of this very issue. I am happy to say Stray

Editor’s notes Dog is our very first store highlighted for our new regular Featured Designer segment. Without these people, Gallant would not be possible and a heartfelt thanks is definitely in order. Now I pose the question to you – who is that person(s) who helps make your SL an amazing place? When that person comes to mind, make sure to reach out and tell these unsung heroes how important they truly are.

It was truly an experience to make, and in this issue we partnered with Dufaux Mesh Boutique to release some all new underwear for men in our Boxers or Briefs feature. We also give a huge nod to summer with Shore Living, a visit to Summer Camp, and Yacht Club. Hello!

The initial thought that came to mind when my home screen was first loading was “this virtual world is a blank canvas and I can begin to paint it my way.”

I joined Second Life only four months ago. A Brazilian.

A newcomer. However, I was not entirely empty-handed.

I brought to Second Life my experience in graphic design as well as photography. I also had support from a great friend who helped guide me during those first few days.

I had worked on publications and graphic design before coming here, but I couldn’t help but ask myself “who is going to pay attention to me as a newcomer to SL?” Fortunately, that thought was unwarranted. Gac Akina is a very close friend of mine and I was excited to see he was selected as the featured designer this month for Gallant Magazine. I met him years ago playing another online game, and we have stayed in contact ever since. Gac introduced me to his friends and fortunately I can now call them my friends as well. He also helped put me in front of potential clients as I began to think about a SL career capitalizing on my graphic design skills.

In my first few months I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and partner with several prominent designers in SL, redesigning their brands to provide them increased visibility and widen their target audience. After a few weeks of continuing to build my presence in SL, Gac introduced me to Divos, who shared with me his vision for Gallant while I shared with him my portfolio of previous work. After getting to know each other, Divos invited me to join the Gallant management team as Assistant Editor and I, of course, accepted.

Editor’s notes The fashion universe, editorial collections and decor have always attracted me. This publication is an even greater opportunity to show how passionate I am for my work and it gives me a vehicle where people can see it in action.

The first edition of Gallant made a big impression on me.

Now, as we focus on the future with Gallant’s rebranding and upcoming lineups, I hope it draws more attention still to those who read and believe in Gallant Magazine.

I’m very excited about this issue and hope you enjoy this edition that features new interviews, editorials and more!

If you have been sporting a male avatar during the last seven months (and have not been living your SLife exiled on a remote island on mainland), chances are you have heard of STRAY DOG. As a premiere skin creator for males in Second Life, STRAY DOG has become a household name and recently celebrated its sixth month anniversary on the grid.

To celebrate this milestone, GALLANT Magazine wanted to spend some time with Gac Akina, the mastermind behind STRAY DOG and his amazing new skin creations.

STRAY DOG first entered the skin scene at the Signature Event last December. Initially designed to provide additional skin options for men with mesh heads, Gac’s goal was to offer customers unique, one-of-a-kind head appliers with unique features.

As if STRAY DOG’s head appliers were not impressive enough, Gac recently answered his customer’s prayers by releasing his body skins!

The first STRAY DOG body skin is created for the Signature mesh body and is designed to match his catalogue of head appliers. A recent release for the Belleza body is now available as well! True to form, STRAY DOG offers unique features with his body skin beyond just hairy and smooth skin tones – the body skin also offers two different tan line options just in time for the summer months.

This original, hand-drawn body skin was definitely worth the wait!

And now that introductions are out of the way, let’s hear from STRAY DOG creator Gac Akina himself!

Gac’s very first skin release, “Franco”, had jaws dropping with its hand-drawn originality and appliers including special features such as freckles and winter-kissed red cheeks.

Thankfully, his creativity did not stop there. Over the past six months, STRAY DOG has released an impressive 41 skins and participated in over 30 events to date, which is an incredible feat for any creator, let alone one that has been around for such a short amount of time!

STRAY DOG includes many diverse options - from skin tones to hair bases to freckles and more. Looking through Gac’s Flickr page is like peering into an international kaleidoscope with the many skin tones and ethnicities represented by his brand.

The men in SL often cry out for additional options for the underrepresented male consumer, and Gac has answered this call by providing a multitude of options that give guys the opportunity to showcase their originality without fear of looking like a carbon copy of the avatar right next to him.

DIVOS: Gac, thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. As our inaugural GALLANT featured designer, I could not think of a better way to kick off this segment for the first time than with you and STRAY DOG skins.

GAC: Thank you for having me! I am excited to be here.

DIVOS: The pleasure is all ours! I hope you are ready. When you agreed to do this interview for GALLANT, I told you that the readers are dying to know more about you, so I brought questions!

GAC: I am ready!

DIVOS: Excellent! In taking a peek at your profile, it looks like you are just a few months shy of ten years old in Second Life. That’s quite impressive! What made you join SL and what has kept you here for a decade?

GAC: That’s a funny story, actually! Almost ten years ago when I created Gac Akina, I was only 14 years old. At that point in time Second Life was not an exciting game for someone so young, so I gave up and kept playing The Sims 2. However, I returned to SL in 2014 and I was able to recover my Gac Akina account. I always loved editing pictures in Photoshop, and my first goal in SL was to become a great photographer. Photography was my main occupation in SL for almost 3 years.

DIVOS: Your photography goal was definitely achieved! While you may not be a newcomer to SL, many people are just getting a chance to meet you with the opening of STRAY DOG. What’s one thing about you that many people do not know?

GAC: Although this is definitely not a secret, I think the first thing I want people to know is that I’m Brazilian. SL opens up the world to me beyond just my country and has become an important part of my life because it has given me an outlet to meet many amazing people. I am extremely proud of my friends and they are very important to me. Beyond that, SL has given me a platform to work with something that I love.

DIVOS: As evidenced by your Flickr, you’ve been sharing your artistic talent with the SL community in a variety of ways, such as your Artaze Photography Studio and Gallery. What made you decide to venture into making male skins?

GAC: I love photography as much as I love creating skins. My shift from photographer to skin designer didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it was never a conscious decision to quit photography and start designing skins. One thing lead to another and it all happened effortlessly. My first time working with skins was when I decided to make a mesh head for myself to avoid spending hours in photoshop just to make my classic avatar look good. My first mesh head was a mess, and then I started learning more and improving. It was at that point I actually started receiving orders for custom mesh heads. I never planned on selling custom heads, it just sort of happened. Bento changed that though and I decided to stop creating mesh heads and to focus solely on creating skin appliers.

DIVOS: With branding being such a critical part of any new store, why did you choose the name “STRAY DOG”?

GAC: STRAY DOG was my blog name once! I was a terrible blogger and that is one reason why I admire bloggers because it is not easy work.

The real inspiration for the name is my addiction to a band called Stray Dogg. Their songs would relax me a lot while editing pictures and I would listen to all of their songs on repeat all day long.

DIVOS: You offer so many unique options with your skins: tan lines, lipstick kisses, cuts and bruises – just to name a few. What inspires you when you are creating new skins?

GAC: When I started to create skins the Bento heads were still in the future, and males only had a few options for heads. Knowing that everyone wants to look like an individual, I decided to create some add-ons to allow the men of SL to create a unique look. Also, my intent was to represent as many ethnicities as possible to make sure everyone feels well-represented in the grid and people had an option to create an avatar with whom they identify.

DIVOS: As a new store owner, has there been any surprises with opening STRAY DOG? GAC: Every day the store is exceeding even my most optimistic of expectations, thanks to all of the support I have from my amazing friends who treat my store as if it were their own! I am still getting used to seeing other people using my skins, and it is always a great surprise when I see my creations being worn by others. It is the best payoff for my hard work!

DIVOS: SL is full of talented people that share their creativity with the community. Are there any creators that you look up to or admire?

GAC: Oh, I have so many, but I really admire anyone who make a living out from SL. It is really hard work, and SL is home to many talented people. It is just amazing!

DIVOS: You recently released a STRAY DOG hat that was beautiful. Are there any plans for STRAY DOG to venture into other items beyond skin?

GAC: That STRAY DOG hat was a gift from Zara to me, and from her store VARONIS to STRAY DOG. Zara deserves all of the credit for its creation. She is an incredible mesh designer, and gave that amazing hat to me as a gift for my loyal customers! <3 DIVOS: STRAY DOG has released an impressive number of skins since opening 7 months ago, and you show no signs of stopping! What can we expect from STRAY DOG in the future â&#x20AC;&#x201C; any exciting things to come?

GAC: You guys can expect more and more ethnicities represented, additional body appliers for other mesh bodies, a custom skin applier service and, last but not least, a second brand for female skins!

DIVOS: It is clear that you put your heart and soul into your work. The SL community appreciates all of your creativity and imagination to make us look so good. Thank you for your time here today and allowing the GALLANT readers to learn a little bit more about you and STRAY DOG! We wish you much continued success!
