ZHUANG HONG-YI BETWEEN EAST & WEST Born in Sichuan, China, in 1962, Zhuang Hong-Yi has developed a singular artistic language shaped by a life between East and West. Trained at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute before continuing his artistic education at the Minerva Academy in the Netherlands, he brings together the discipline and craftsmanship of Chinese tradition with the freedom, colour and experimentation of European art. For more than three decades, this dialogue between cultures has remained at the heart of his practice. Rather than opposing these influences, Zhuang allows them to coexist, creating a visual language that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. Flowers have become the defining vocabulary of his work. Meticulously folded from rice paper and transformed through layers of colour, they give his compositions a sculptural presence that continuously evolves with light, perspective and the movement of the viewer. More than a motif, the flower becomes a universal symbol of beauty, optimism, prosperity and renewal, a language capable of connecting people beyond words.
WHY VENICE? A DIALOGUE ACROSS TIME & CULTURES “In 1996, I set foot in Venice for the first time. I still remember the immediate sense of awe I felt looking at the city’s craftsmanship, rich history and endless stories. Every corner, curve and surface seemed shaped by human hands, genius and artistry. It is this tangible care that I pursue in my own work. Through movement and expression, I hope to create a bridge across time and cultures - connecting our past to our present while looking towards the future we are writing together, moment by moment.” Zhuang Hong-Yi Few cities could resonate more naturally with Zhuang Hong-Yi’s artistic language than Venice. For centuries, the city has stood at the crossroads of East and West, shaped by the exchange of cultures, artistic traditions and craftsmanship. This history echoes Zhuang’s own journey and the dialogue between Chinese heritage and European influence that defines his work. Venice is also a city in constant transformation. Light shifts across its architecture and water, reflections alter perception, and the same landscape reveals itself differently throughout the day. In much the same way, Zhuang’s works change according to light, movement and the position of the viewer. Venice therefore becomes more than the setting for this exhibition: it becomes part of its meaning.

After many years of collaboration with Galeries Bartoux, presenting this solo exhibition together in Venice, within such a transformed space, is deeply meaningful to me. A flower embodies a wonderful and fleeting beauty, a universal language of positivity and prosperity. As the seasons pass and the world changes around us, we are reminded that change is the only constant, and that we are but a brief moment in the flow of time. What do we do with our time? My answer lies within these works: to capture what is fleeting and transform it into something everlasting.
