From the Editor I am excited to share that this issue of The Villager is dedicated to Galerie Living's newest community, Corso Atlanta.

When I first joined the Galerie Living team in January 2020, I heard about the goal to bring a city block of Paris to Atlanta. Originally, I thought this goal was an outlandish dream.

However, it wasn't a dream. It was a vision. Two years and a pandemic later, the time has finally arrived. The vision is now a reality.

Corso Atlanta is now open. Atlanta's most luxurious senior living community is ushering in a new era of senior living thanks to the innovators, thought leaders, and pioneers discovered throughout our company.

The newest development incorporates Buckhead businesses, multiple dining venues, and collaborative teams in an effort to sustain Galerie Living's values of Happiness, Dignity, Innovation, and Excellence.

As we celebrate the new adventures on the horizon, we continue to honor the stories of residents, team members, and community leaders of Village Park Senior Living.

Throughout this edition of The Villager, you will read about the many game-changers, warriors, and inspirational leaders that continue to positively shift the culture surrounding senior living.

Creating Corso | Meet the Team Corso Atlanta was built by a team of innovators, visionaries, and creatives who are excited to break the mindsets and stigmas surrounding senior living. By utilizing concepts of Neuroarchitecture, members of Galerie Living have effectively built stimulating experiences within the campus design. Corso Atlanta offers a variety of new concepts to Galerie Living and the senior living industry as a whole.

We are excited about our new partnerships with Lucy’s Market, Sugarcoat, and Terry Furata’s Flowers of Giverny. Partnering with the community of Buckhead to provides a lifestyle for seniors that’s different from anything available before.

Corso offers a memory care experience that is beautiful, open, and therapeutic, enhancing the lives of residents that live there. A level of service that is raising the bar for all of Galerie’s properties.

New employees and residents that have become part of the Galerie family. The leadership team wants to thank each and every employee and resident that helped us dream, develop, build and occupy our newest community!

In the spirit of expression, exploration, and historical references to art, interior architecture, and design...Corso began.

The initial vision my design team and I had encompassed French design reminiscent of the luminous city of Paris in all its grandeur. Corso extends to those who visit, the ability to catch the right moment, the moment when something changes, into something else. Each space is designed to flow smoothly from one to the next with unexpected happiness at every turn.

I am most passionate about drawing inspiration through art, textures, balance, and scale. This rings especially true in reference to the beautiful European textiles, and the custom lighting which makes each space special. The art is a collection of many originals from local art galleries.

Several to note that I love are the "Tulip" wall by Bradley Sabin, in the lounge which is amazing as the light softly plays across each petal. The second is the sculptural green wall custom designed by Robert at Opiary.

The jewel of the building is the Tasting Room and Wine Cellar. This room transcends into its own magical space with twinkling lights highlighting the barrel-vaulted ceiling, and serves as a pre-function space for dinner, and to enjoy a wine tasting.

I feel that the blending of one's life into the hope of inspiring others through sharing my love for design will offer new experiences and moments to be remembered in our community, Corso.

MEET DIRECTOR OF DESIGN,

Steve Markey Growing up in Europe, Steve Markey's passion for architecture and the arts began at a young age. A life-long student of music and art, he was immediately drawn to classicism's rhythmic balance, symmetry, and grand scale. When asked why the style appeals most to him he replied, "Having grown up in Europe, it's in my DNA."

Steve credits his deep fundamental understanding of classical design to being immersed in centuries of architectural design and styles.

He went on to formally study Architecture Classicists of the Early 20th Century and U.S. Architecture with a focus on Atlanta Architecture.

When Steve learned Tim Gary, Founder and CEO of Galerie Living (parent company to Corso Atlanta), was seeking someone to design a "block of Paris" in Buckhead, he knew the project was a perfect fit.

“I came here because Founder & CEO, Tim Gary, has the vision to create beautiful projects. I'll stay here because Tim supports that vision by his actions every day.”

Working with the Corso Atlanta and Galerie team, Steve uses knowledge gained from a lifetime of experience to constantly push the envelope and create beauty for everyday life.

With 39 years of architectural experience, Steve has designed, detailed, and coordinated highend projects ranging in styles across the country and abroad. His work includes estates, communities, and clubs throughout Atlanta and the Southeast. He has encouraged a resurgence of traditional architecture in the Southeast, working closely with the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. 15 | CREATING BEAUTY

THE PROCESS TO

Creating Beauty Consisting of 460,000 square feet of residential and common space, designing Corso Atlanta was comparable to designing a small-scale city. Not only was the project large in scale, but conceptually complex.

Amenities were carefully chosen to create engaging experiences. Pathways were intricately designed to slightly wind, incorporating the flow of Europe's winding city streets. To step into Corso Atlanta would not just be stepping into a space but into an experience.

"Corso creates familiarity with the past while giving the ability to experience beauty on a day-to-day basis," Steve explained. "That’s the thing, it’s not just a home, it’s not just a place to live...it wants to be more than a home, it wants to be more of an experience."

I thought "I would like to have a separation from the courtyard and my front door, so we added gated patios to the city homes."

When asked how he began such a project, Steve explained he started with the knowns and then worked to solve the unknowns.

“The attic level dormer was the first drawing I did of the project, because I realized everything was built on the rhythm of openings and dormers.”

The initial drawing is prominently seen along Corso's roofline.

From the dormer, he began designing the residential towers as a consistent backdrop surrounding the "jewel box" of the main building. The design is similar to Paris' patterned repetition that breaks at civic centers, theaters, palaces, etc.

The campus is connected by courtyards, outdoor dining, and shops for residents and guests to stroll, dine, and enjoy together. Details such as rounded corners, coffered ceilings, elevated trim work, and top-line appliances. Even the news and vendor kiosks that blanket the Parisian streets would be incorporated as the valet stand at Corso. Every element is held to a standard of excellence.

Upon being asked what makes Corso Atlanta truly stand out, Steve replied: “What makes Corso beautiful and different is the authenticity of it; trying to make it real without making it Disneyland."

Paired with Corso's activities, experience, wellness, and hospitality programming, the atmosphere creates a comforting sense of home with the excitement of vibrant courtyards, the smell of coffee and pastries from the bistro, and the company of friends old and new.

CHEF PHILIPPE HADDAD Consulting Executive Chef & Curator

Curator and culinary consultant of Corso Atlanta, Executive Chef Philippe Haddad is wellknown throughout Atlanta and beyond for creating unforgettable dining experiences that celebrate the art of food, drink, and soul. He brings three decades of international culinary experience from Atlanta favorites such as Nikolai’s Roof, as well as, iconic brands including the Ritz Carlton to the tables of Corso.

Chef Philippe Haddad is the consulting executive chef and curator for Corso Atlanta. He has been in this business for more than 35 years.

His experience of consulting is very fun and interactive. Philippe takes pride in remaining very active in the kitchen with his team.

While reflecting on his culinary experiences growing up, Chef Philippe notes that his mom is an amazing cook. He remembers how it was always a pleasant experience to come home from school.

“It was just coming into the house, you smell and you go wow.”

Chef Philippe was always curious to see what she was cooking. His parents took him to restaurants once a month and that's how he created his palette that how helps in creating a distinguished experience. It exposed him to a lot of foods in the course of his teenage years.

Chef learned that cooking comes from the heart.

He explains cooking is not a script.

"It's not something that the books are just a guideline, you also have to create your own personality.”

Chef Philippe loves cooking at home. His tip to creating a great dish is to have fun.

“You know I first thing you must do is open a bottle of wine, I mean, it's a must,” He says. “Then, you just whip something up.”

Philippe tries to limit mealtime to 30-45 minutes. A fantastic dish doesn't have to be complicated.

Simple foods are sometimes the best.

Philippe is friends with many chefs throughout Atlanta and enjoys supporting them.

“They're amazing and they do some great stuff.” He says. “We cook together too, which is even more fun.”

The creative chef prefers to create meals with seasonal items because it is the freshest product available.

Philippe enjoys experimenting and testing new recipes from home. He is excited to bring the freshest, quality ingredients and recipes to Corso Atlanta.

Terry Furuta, owner of Terry Furuta Designs and Flowers of Giverny opens her newest location at Corso Atlanta.

Terry Furuta is a seasoned floral and design pro with 40+ years of experience in the floral design business.

Although she has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia studying international floral design

Terry's designs fuse the exotic and the sustainable into imaginative and long-lasting arrangements of orchids, mosses, air plants, and terrariums.

“I'm looking forward to creating an experience — a wonderful, beautiful experience."

Terry says Flowers of Giverny is her dream shop. She laid out the shop with Corso’s architects and designers.

“It brings the outdoors inside and you have that feeling of being outdoors.” Terry describes. “It's much more peaceful.”

Terry makes sure the service she provides is all about the clients. She wants people to feel good and says the plants are just part of it explaining, “The plants make people feel good but, I want them to feel happy with what they purchase and something that excites them as they come in and they see a flower, and they get excited by it.”

That’s one of many reasons why she enjoys Corso. “I will have people there that will want to come to the flower shop for an experience.”

Terry is excited the Flowers of Giverny is efficient and beautiful, allowing people to come in participate in her passion while creating fun experiences. Terry hosts classes on-site so residents and their guests can create renowned arrangements.

Terry loves teaching the workshops and makes sure her customers are able to care for their creations, even when she is not around. In an effort to make sure each of her customers is successful, Terry provides a detailed care sheet specific to their plant.

This relieves anxiety and makes each guest excited for the sustainability of their arrangement.

The beauty, services, and design for Flowers of Giverny embrace a calming atmosphere complete with positive energy. It is a great place to stop by for anybody who may need encouragement.

“I have people come in in this shop now and they'll just sit and say I just needed some good energy today and to be surrounded by some beauty."

Terry looks forward to these moments and having the opportunity to share happiness with guests.

LUCY'S MARKET OWNER | KIM WILSON The iconic Buckhead favorite is now at Corso Atlanta. After 12 years of carefully merchandising selected goods for the North Atlanta neighborhood, Lucy’s Market is opened its doors at Corso Atlanta’s luxury senior living community.

Lucy’s Market at Corso Atlanta is located in between the bistro and crêperie.

Kim Wilson, founder, and owner of Lucy’s Market, is excited to bring her curated selection of European provisions, local goods, and festive must-haves that will greet Corso residents as they enter their new home.

Innately meticulous with her business moves, Kim was initially hesitant to join the Corso community as she wanted to ensure that the values aligned.

After she met with the Corso team and saw the community in person, she decided it was the perfect fit.

“When I came over and visited, it was like, oh my goodness, this is a perfect place for Lucy’s to help with this customer base and make their lives a little cheerful, a little easier, and definitely add some fun.”

The growing symbiotic relationship between Corso Atlanta and Lucy’s Market ultimately benefits the residents and their families. Both businesses are excited to provide the community with excellence, charm, and unexpected happiness. The Lucy’s Market space will give residents the ability to drop by during the day to pick out their favorite items.

The moment you step through the door, you are greeted with music, elaborate seasonal decor, and a warm welcome. The same values will carry over to the Corso location. Kim and her team make a point to get to know all of their customers.

“Being able to know their names is so important, and it makes you stand out,” Kim explains. “If you were to go into a place and they called you by name, you definitely have a feeling of importance that they took enough time to know who you were.”

Designed to provide a relaxing and inviting atmosphere, Sugarcoat is voted as Atlanta's Best Nail and Beauty Bar. Services including manicures, pedicures, hair, massages are provided by talented and skillful technicians who ensure your relaxation is a top priority.

Georgia Tech graduate, Peiru Kim, stumbled upon her passion for beauty after a pivot in her career from real estate. She purchased Sugarcoat Beauty in 2010 from an online business listing and started life as a small business owner. She attended beauty school at night to learn the business from the ground up while running the business during the day. She worked 7 days a week and was immersed in daily operations to learn everything she could about the business. From the front of the house to the back of the house, she wanted to learn it all.

What she loved the most was the people she served, she wanted to make a difference for those she got to touch day in and day out. She loves her team, her clients, and the community. The biggest reward to her was seeing the smiling faces leaving and coming back year after year. Her vision is to create a beautiful space for people to gather, to give the best self-care experience to the community she serves. Peiru is fearlessly protective of her hard-working men and women.

A career in nail care should not be discriminated against, so she had her business plan set to build the ultimate nail salon to change things up, and to set a new standard.

atrocious war crimes. As the ongoing attack shocked and saddened people around the world, this isn’t the first time a country has been oppressed by war. We recently spoke with a senior who shared her story of survival.

Lilo Townsend is a 94-year-old German woman who lives in a retirement home in Peachtree Corners, Ga. She is kind, genuine, and authentic. We initially

interviewed Lilo with the intention of researching the impact of language in seniors, but the story she shared expanded beyond linguistic research and proved to be a survival guide for those experiencing the hardships of war.

In moments of reflecting on childhood memories of warfare, she often stared out the window. It was as if she was reliving the moments from her past and the feeling in the room shifted into somber tones. By the time Lilo was 18, she experienced her father being sent to a concentration camp and she escaped the Soviet reign of East Germany.

Upon realizing that the Russians had invaded Ukraine, Lilo was shocked. She couldn’t believe it was happening in the present. The vibe in the room shifted as she shared her story and advice for survival. Her story is one of grit, tenacity, and determination. It is an inspiration to future generations.

Takeover 1945

One country, two sides. East and West. This was the Germany Frau Lilo grew up in almost a century ago. She was raised during the reign of Hitler and soon after, the communist powers of the USSR. Lilo faced many hardships before she saw the metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel. Her experiences as a survivor in a wartorn country are inspirational to other warriors fighting for their futures.

Although Lilo says she didn’t have many happy memories, she explained she did have friends and they helped her throughout her childhood. For fun, they would climb mountains in Germany, including the Zugspitze. In a way, her favorite activity is a metaphor for her life. Climbing a mountain can be difficult, but once you overcome the hurdle, everything else falls into place.

Lilo’s father, Albin Joram, was a Baumeister, a builder, and an opera singer. Her mother, Henriette, was a homemaker. Together, Lilo’s parents influenced her kind, humanitarian characteristics and helped prisoners of war. Her father participated in The Underground. The Underground was a rebellion group that opposed Hitler and the Nazi Party.

Albin once said, “If you take my friends, you take me because no human life is worth more than another.”

He later was put in a concentration camp when Frau Lilo was a child. He would later be released after the defeat of the Axis powers, but this traumatic event was only the beginning. Frau Lilo grew up in the town of Bad Elster, located on the border of Bavaria and the Czech Republic. Her hometown fell under the jurisdiction of Eastern Germany. It was taken over by Russian soldiers and from that moment on, she constantly had to look over her shoulder.

Frau Lilo recounted the moment she and her family were forced to leave their house. Soviet soldiers only gave them three hours to grab whatever they could. Lilo was lucky enough to have another place to go since her parents owned a second home, but this was bittersweet. The day haunted her family even after the reunification of Germany. Lilo’s mother was never able to drive past that house again.

“It was too painful,” Frau Lilo said.

Everyone in East Germany was forced to learn the Russian language, including Frau Lilo.

However, she refused to learn it. She made sure to erase whatever she did learn from her memory. She didn’t want to have any ties with the oppressors.

“These were dangerous times,” she murmured, “one had to be careful of what they said and to whom they said things to.”

Escape

Every day was painful under Soviet oppression. Frau Lilo shared how she couldn’t go out alone and especially at night. She explained how the Russian soldiers would harass and rape innocent women. Frau Lilo was thankful not to be one of these victims. A statement she made sure to emphasize.

One fateful day, Lilo decided it was time for a change. She knew she could not tell anybody about what she was thinking about doing. If she told the wrong person, then there was more risk that she would get caught.

In an impulsive decision, Lilo snuck on the back of a boxcar heading to West Germany. In doing so, she risked the ability to see her family and potentially being caught and sentenced to prison. Lilo hid behind furniture and whatever else could use to cover her in the boxcar. She was almost caught, but as Frau Lilo says,

Almost, is not catching.

CLIMBING MOUNTAINS | RESILIENCE, MEMORIES, & ESCAPING OPPRESSION Her escape and the train ride lasted around five hours total. She emerged from hiding in the boxcar to find herself in GarmischPartenkirchen.

Freedom

Soon after, escaping East Germany, Lilo met her husband. In 1948, Frau Lilo made the long trip overseas to Maine with her husband she explained with the help of her daughter. The couple was married for 60 years becoming the parents of a son and daughter. Although she was in a foreign country surrounded by a different language, she had the small comfort of already having an understanding of English.

Since she had grown up in the international town of Bad Elster, she had been exposed to many different languages including English and French.

She was happy in Maine, she says with a smile on her face while staring at her favorite painting, which is a rendering of her hometown with the mountains in the background. Lilo says, in America, the people were nicer and she had the freedom to speak without worrying about what she said or feeling the need to watch her back in fear.

Today, she enjoys retirement in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. Her daughter and son live nearby and often visit Frau Lilo. Every day she enjoys meals with neighbors while embracing her family, friends, and community that surrounds her.

“It feels very good here,” Lilo says. “The employees are very nice, the people who live here are very pleasant, there is always something to do here.

You never feel alone.”

Conclusion

Frau Lilo is a courageous and resilient woman.

Time and time again she was forced to confront difficult obstacles in her life, but in the end, she came out triumphant and stronger than ever.

Even during the bleakest moments of her life, there was light at the end of the tunnel, and she was destined to find it. At the end of the day, she likes to relax while staring at her favorite painting. She closes her eyes and imagines the wind tickling her face, the sounds of the trickling brook reaching her ears, and the feeling of peace engulfs her. The painting is not just a piece of art that she cherishes, but it is also a symbol of her resilience and perseverance. It’s saying, “look at where I am.”

In spite of all her hardships, she is still a very happy and joyful woman. As a testament to her character, Frau Lilo ends the interview by saying that even at the age of 94, “I would still climb another mountain.”

This same spirit lives within all the people of Ukraine. From the Ukrainian grandmother who gave sunflower seeds to the Russian soldier, to the Ukrainian citizens who have stayed to fight for their country, Frau Lilo lives within all of them. They too will find the light at the end of the tunnel. They too will come out triumphant.

By Gabrielle Jones People know their great-grandparents as the ones who can bake delicious treats and tell stories about the people their parents were. I grew up visiting my greatgrandmother every summer and enjoyed watching her cook amazing food in the kitchen and converse with friends from church.

I watched fireworks with her while and ate dessert while watching the night go dark. No matter how much time we spent together, I never expected my great-grandmother would've helped to shift the needle for her career and community.

My great-grandmother, Ann Walker, never meant to find herself in a journalism career. She got her start in 1949 when her friend asked her to write an editorial piece for his magazine, the Sentinel. She did not major in journalism but she had written pieces in high school and college, so she wrote the editorial for him.

A year later he asked her if she would like her own column, Party Line. The column would tell stories of women's activities happening in the community.

She and the women in her community were excited because at that time, nobody was telling stories for African Americans.

This provided her an opportunity to represent a new audience and help her establish her career in journalism and media.

Later in my great-grandmother's career, she went to Little Rock Arkansas for the For The People’s National Conference where former President Jimmy Carter spoke.

At this conference, Carter was still a presidential candidate. He spoke about several issues he would address if elected President such as reforming prison and crime.

Two years passed after that conference, and Ann moved onto television where she worked as the Director of Community Services.

She was the only woman in the country serving in a position like this during this time.

Jimmy Carter was at the station for a panel interview, and a male reporter from the Associated Press was slated to be a part of the panel.

At the last minute, the reporter tried to renegotiate his rate on his contract and because of this, the station chose to let go of him. Instead, they asked my greatgrandmother to step up and fill his spot since she always knew what was going on in the community.

While other reporters were focused on Hubert Humphries, Ann Walker asked about the topics Jimmy Carter spoke about at the Little Rock conference. At the end of the panel, Carter said, "This little lady is the only one who asks intelligent questions.”

Shortly after, Jimmy Carter was elected President of the United States and this changed the trajectory of Ann Walker’s journalism career.

After returning home from a community trip in Africa, Walker was informed by her husband that the White House had called. She laughed it off as a joke. Her husband reassured her it wasn’t, so she returned the call the next day.

When she spoke to the White House, they asked if she could come to Washington D.C. She journeyed to the Capitol that Friday and met the team. A week later, she started her new job.

She worked as head of media for the Poverty Agency of the government. She worked in the White House with Jimmy Carter until the end of his term in 1981. She then worked with Reagan for seven months until he found a replacement.

To this day, it is not known who got Ann Walker to the White House. None of the democratic organizations in her community nominated her for the position, so it is assumed Jimmy Carter remembered her from the panel interview and asked for her personally.

Not only did Ann Walker shift the needle for journalism in Columbus, Ohio, but she also served in her community. She served on many boards including Planned Parenthood, the Franklin County Committee for Drugs and Alcohol, the Young Women's Christian Organization, and the Columbus Zoo. 40 | PAST AND FUTURE

While her work serving boards helped to strengthen her community, her longest-running project is her work with Bethany Presbyterian Church. In 2005, Ann Walker began to recognize the need to feed the unhoused in her community. She and a team at Bethany decided they would start a lunch program to help combat this. They started with soup, dessert, and a drink but they quickly moved on to a full meal.

They set the table with tablecloths in their church every Saturday and fed the homeless and the hungry. The organization also provides a clothing ministry, haircuts, and books for children.

The Covid-19 pandemic did not stop their work, while they could not set the table for people anymore they still provided a boxed lunch every Saturday. My great-grandmother's work with the community inspired two local churches to start a monthly food program to also help feed the homeless.

Through all of this my great-grandmother remains very humble about her accomplishments. Through her work in Columbus, Ohio she became the first black woman at her radio station, the first black woman to report on Ohio legislature, she was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, and her image was placed on a bridge for her contributions.

In 2021, a building of 130+ office spaces was dedicated to her for the impact she made on the community. At the bottom of the building sits the Ann Walker Plaza. The inside of the building is the home of Blackowned business on the bottom floors.

The biggest advice Walker has is, “If a door opens, you cannot walk through without taking someone with you.”

If she ever has a contact or an opportunity she will always share it. Her selflessness for giving back to her community is the reason her story is so uplifting.

For the last twenty years of my life, a history maker has been sitting in my midst and I never knew it. She changed the lives for many in her community and beyond. As someone wanting to pursue a career in media it is inspiring to know someone who has made a tremendous impact in the industry has left a legacy for me to follow. It motivates me to follow in her footsteps, not only with her media career but with her passion to serve the community she is a part of.

ON THE RISE

The Videography Prodigy Jeremy Paredes is a name to remember. His talent for visual storytelling exceeds standard video production and is being noticed by established organizations across all industries. As a Freshman at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Jeremy is the first student ever to receive a full-ride athletic scholarship because of his creative talents. In receiving such an esteemed honor, Jeremy works with the Yellow Jacket’s Creative Media Team to capture photos and videos for the Football team and other Georgia Tech sports.

Recently, Jeremy had the opportunity of a lifetime to cover the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Working for 12 hours a day for three weeks straight, Jeremy dove into Olympic culture. As a former athlete and lover of sports, Jeremy says this was a dream come true to work at the most prestigious sporting event.

This opportunity would not have been possible without the assistance of one of Jeremy’s greatest role models and inspirations, his Aunt Michelle Tesoro.

Michelle is a motion picture editor and previously worked on the popular Netflix series, “The Queen’s Gambit.” She connected Jeremy with a freelance editor for NBC Sports.

The editor thought highly of Jeremy’s work and recommended he apply to be a Digital Production Assistant for NBC Sports. After rounds of interviews, he was offered the position.

These positions and opportunities are a direct result of Jeremy’s passion for capturing stories.

Jeremy’s journey in the media field began when he played soccer in 8th grade. He would video blog his team’s tournaments and adventures. This hobby and craft continue to grow. With an incredibly bright future, Jeremy plans to continue producing content for Georgia Tech athletics, get his degree, and work in the sports media industry after graduation. Remember to stay tuned and keep an eye out for what he captures next.

One of the most satisfying parts of creating videos is the power of storytelling.

Gabrielle Jones KSU Sophomore Multimedia Journalist Intern Gabrielle recently joined Galerie Living as the new Multimedia Journalist Intern. She looks forward to meeting new people, telling their stories, and connecting communities.

As a sophomore college student at Kennesaw State University, Gabrielle is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Media and Entertainment.

Outside of the classroom, she can be seen exploring, conversing with new people, or catching up on the latest movies.

Although she grew up an Atlanta native, Gabrielle has enjoyed stepping out of the city and exploring what the world has to offer. She has been fortunate enough to travel overseas to meet new people and have the chance to learn about their stories In March of 2022, Gabrielle traveled to Otzenhausen, Germany for ten days where she participated in a diversity and human rights study abroad. There she took part in workshops on diversity, sustainability, and European history. She enjoyed the experience and is excited to travel and learn more.

Tom and Kathleen Gruber The Grubers met in a church parking lot over fifty years ago. They agree the happiest moment of their marriage has been with their two children and grandchild. Tom is very honest about his thoughts on finding 'the one.'

"You never really know, you make your best guess on what you see and what your heart tells you,” Tom says. “You look for as many things in common as possible, you go with your gut, you try to do what's right, and you honor the person.”

Delos and Margaret Knight Delos and Margaret while working for a radio station more than 66 years ago. Delos was an announcer and she was a copy editor. They initially bumped heads and briefly parted ways when Delos joined the Army. Six years later he returned from his service and he and Margaret happened to be covering the same event, the town’s Paper Queen Ball. After that night. Delos drove over 100 miles every weekend to take her on dates, and after three months of this, they got married. According to the Knight’s the secret to 66 years of marriage is positivity, “There is always something positive in a situation, you just have to keep looking,” They said. “You [also] have to make it a habit, make it a partnership.”

Don and Evie Dilliplane After meeting on a double date, where they were on a date with the opposite person, Don and Evie Dilliplane fell in love.

Since then they have been married for 62 years. They have a son and daughter together and between them, they have four granddaughters. They say the most important part of marriage is compromising, “Each family lives differently and you have different ideas and different ways of doing things. You have to compromise.”

BJ and Billie Hood Billie and Bobby met when they were in ninth grade, and they fell in love. After they graduated Bobby joined the Navy.

When Bobby came home for his 30-day leave, the two got married. Their favorite moments in their relationship come from their travels. Following their retirement, they journeyed across the United States in an RV. While they had hardships in their relationship they always found a way through it saying, "You just do whatever it takes."

An Interview with Wellness Director, Eunice Beyan Declining mental health in seniors is a common problem. Wellness Director, Eunice Beyan, shares valuable information on recognizing signs of depression, mitigation, and treatment strategies.

What are some common signs of declining mental health in seniors?

It is a lack of participation in activities. When they start to experience a change in their mental health, depression, anxiety, they have no desire to be a part of activities they usually would partake in.

"UNDERSTANDING GERIATRIC DEPRESSION"

Are there any symptoms of geriatric depression that are separate from just declining mental health?

Interaction with family plays a big part. When you see that they start to lose that piece, this can be a trigger as well. They will start declining at a faster rate than what you will see for someone who is younger.

How should seniors know when it's time to seek help?

If they have that failure to thrive, when they start noticing they show no interest in being a part of group activities, interacting with their family, and they are more focused on secluding themselves. Also, have a conversation, sometimes they go into that state and they don't even realize that that's what's happening. So if there is a change in your mood, change in being down, and they don't want to do certain things, then definitely seek help at that time.

Who should they reach out to if they need help?

They can reach out to a family member or if they have a support system outside of their family. They can speak to their doctor, a community wellness director, or their care team. These people will usually have the best resources.

If a senior is diagnosed with depression, what are some common treatment options you may see for them?

Common treatments include therapy. I know sometimes we tend to shy away from that but, seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist helps. We turn to medication but we try to use other interventions prior to that. Seeing what the root cause is and sometimes changing what the root cause is. Maybe some of the activities that have been of interest before have changed, so seeing what their new interest is also helpful.

What should I do if someone close to me is depressed?

Any advice?

If I could give advice to people who are in the lives of seniors it would be to be mindful of those warning signs. When you see someone secluding themselves or when you see them not showing interest in what they were interested in before, have a conversation and be blunt with it.

Sometimes people are just waiting for someone to ask and then they'll be able to open up. Even if they're unable to open up I would say to bring in other resources to help that person because sometimes it's a silent cry for help.

Offer assistance and be a listening ear. Also, see what resources out in the community you can find for them as well. Help them any way that you can, don't just leave it alone or kind of brush off the situation because it can get dark fast.

What strategies could seniors use to mitigate mental health problems before they arise?

Realizing that there is a problem before they arise. Also enriching your life helps too. If you see yourself getting to where you're not interested in activities, or you're not interested in what you were before, maybe shifting what your interests are and focusing on that can be good. We have people who were professional football players and now they may be into puzzles. As they get older, what their focus is and what their interests are will change, so being able to shift and be okay with that new space can avoid going into that depression.

Do we feel so entitled that we are unaware of what others may be experiencing? Have we lost empathy?

Empathy is the ability to share in another’s thoughts or emotions. Gratitude is being thankful for the benefits received. It is being appreciative of what we have and mindful of what others may not have. Studies have shown that those who practice gratitude on a regular basis are happier, less depressed, and have better mental and physical health. Being grateful helps to keep us from putting emphasis on ourselves to becoming observant of others’ lives and conditions.

Here are some suggestions for enhancing the practice of gratitude.

Start and end each day by thinking about three things in your life that you have gratitude for. Force yourself to go beyond the usual family, friends, health, and bring to the surface things you may have taken for granted.

Keep a gratitude journal for a week, noting five things a day you are thankful for.

Express appreciation to all those around you on a daily basis. The act of affirming others brings personal rewards that cut down on the complaining, nothing is perfect.

Lastly, we ought to consider how fortunate we are to live in comfortable, safe, and elegant surroundings. This is not the case for so many others in our country.

Let us count our blessings and let our attitude be one of gratitude.
