Budapest, Hungary has been called a melting-pot‚ between the East and West due to its very central geographic position in Europe. Until the 1930’s Hungary was one of the most active photographic countries in the world the Second World War and communism ended that. Democracy has brought new possibilities and influences and it seems that a transitional period from closed‚ to opening‚ is a relevant theme in all things expressive at this time in Hungarian cultural life.

There is a certain sense of fragility perceived through well executed work. A knife edge between loss and gain‚ in an everchanging union in Europe. Uncertainty and unknowns are ever present in the work of Central European artists. Crying whilst laughing a sense for the black in comedy is one element present in cultural traditions in the region. A land where the East meets the West produces a conflict in cultural identity and this can also be perceived through the visual culture.

What defines a Hungarian photograph is a difficult and rather pointless task, however, there is perhaps a certain recognisable clarity of vision, only possible through the medium of photography, an emotional tonal scale recognisable to the knowing eye. In the same way as a certain rhapsody‚ might be to a music listener—the mood, choice of subject, and compositional effect all define the authors heritage. The grand, historic urban environment of Budapest greatly affect the artists that work there. Between the Buda and the Pest sides of the city there are to be found studios where photographic work is made and thoughts and ideas exchanged. There is a vibrant and active community of photographers both amateur and professional.

Memory and decay, loss and acceptance, birth and death are universal themes that have been explored through all genres of photographic practise. Whether through still-life, portraiture, landscape or documentary certain regional styles and trends can be observed. It is certainly true that fashion photography and paparazzi style photo—journalism don‚t play any major part of the photographic practise in Hungary. From the turn of the century to the present day Hungarian photography has played an important role in the development of photographic trends throughout Europe. Presently it is recognised as a country rich in fine-art photographers.

It is perhaps telling that many Hungarian families recall bathrooms being converted into fuly functioning photographic darkrooms, by enthusiastic relatives. The quest to develop and print, to experiment with a family snapshot‚ is perhaps one characteristic of a photographic culture that is alive and active.

From Budapest to the Balaton many families build their own houses this doesn’t really happen in Western Europe. One can surmise that the hand skills needed for this endeavour are also capable of building photographic housings. Among other important exhibitions The Hungarian Photo Biennale events have enabled this kind of building‚ through the purely technical themes of the panorama, camera obscura, sheet film and so on.

A 30 x 40 cm format camera, 360 degree vistas, multiple pinholes‚ and glass plate negatives have all been presented and well received by critics and public alike.

The physicality of the process of making images is as important as the imagery the pictorial syntax enables our reading and, hence our dialogue with the object. Western photographic film

and paper manufacturers are present but Forte‚ the Hungarian manufacturer supplies traditional papers and products that are not manufactured by other companies. Nuance and independence through the tools of image making are poignant in a period of ever quickening commercial printing. A nonacceptance of all the great wonders of the global multi-national world is, perhaps, important in the aesthetics of a region. Craft is a difficult word when commenting on contemporary issues but there are certain qualities expressed through well educated eyes and hands. Strong hand-craft traditions exist and must influence work. A knowledge of the essential materials—glass, paper, light and emulsion structures the work and inheres that sensual ease in fine print making.

The term photography’s antiquarian avant-garde‚ is most relevant in a period of looking backwards whilst looking forwards. Many local practitioners have contributed to a new interest in centuries old techniques. From New York to Paris photographers from Hungary are part of a new movement, albeit an ill-defined one, that takes its inspiration from the early period of the relatively short but ever evolving history of photography. The cyanotype, the albumen print, the salt print all make reference to the past but open new possibilities for a post-modern language in photographic possibilities. The pixel has its place, but it is surely only a part of a greater alphabet. The act of fashioning an object rather than taking pictures is the key to this revival in old processes. This is about a pure vision as opposed to naiveté.

Styles and trends are difficult to categorise in this post-modern phase in Art History. However, black and white photography seems to dominate the exhibition houses of Budapest. Perhaps

one reason is because colour photographic materials are associated with the more commercial world of advertising and fashion and also that many art photographers prefer to print with and manipulate black and white materials. It does seem evident that the real interest lies in the experimental, the search for the new, whether through abstraction, straight or conceptual based imaging. The Bolt Gallery has been actively publishing and exhibiting this kind of work since 1993 and represents a wide spectrum of photographic representation coming from a wide variety of backgrounds. It has contributed greatly to presenting the work of up-and-comings and also established names from the art community.

The future of Hungarian Photography is unknown but full of great possibilities and with exhibitions such as this the opening‚ is becoming open to a wider audience.

Budapestet gyakran nevezték Kelet és Nyugat olvasztótégelyének különleges, központi földrajzi fekvése miatt. Az 1930-as évekig Magyarországon mûködött a világ egyik legaktívabb fotográfiai élete. A II. világháború és a kommunizmus azonban véget vetett ennek. A demokrácia új lehetôségeket és hatásokat hozott, és úgy tûnik, hogy a zártságból a nyíltság felé való átmenet a mai magyar kulturális élet minden expresszív kísérletének releváns témája.

Az elkészült munkák mindegyikén azonban egyfajta törékenység érzôdik, a veszteség és nyereség közötti tojáshéjtánc Európa állandóan változó uniójában. A bizonytalanság és az ismeretlen témája lépten-nyomon tetten érhetô a közép-európai mûvészek munkáiban. A sírva nevetés és a fekete humor a régió kulturális hagyományainak állandó elemei közé tartozik. Az a föld, ahol a kelet találkozik a nyugattal a kulturális azonosságtudat konfliktusait hordozza magában, amelyet a vizuális kultúra is hûen tükröz.

A magyar fotográfia fogalmának meghatározása bonyolult és egyúttal értelmetlen feladat is, létezik azonban talán egyfajta jól azonosítható tisztánlátás, az egyedül a bennfentes szem számára érzékelhetô érzelmi színek világa, amely kizárólag a fotográfia médiumán ragadható meg. Ugyanúgy, ahogyan egy rapszódia — a hangulat, a tárgyválasztás és a kompozíciós hatás révén — a zenehallgató számára meghatározza a szerzô kulturális örökségét, Budapest grandiózus történelmi városi környezete nagyban befolyásolja az itt dolgozó mûvészek alkotásait. A város budai és pesti oldalán számos stúdióban készülnek fotográfiai munkák, cserélnek gazdát gondolatok és eszmék. Amatôr és hivatásos fényképészek gazdag és aktív közössége él és dolgozik itt.

Az emlék és hanyatlás, a veszteség és beletörôdés, a születés és halál egyetemes témáit a fotográfiai gyakorlat minden mûfaja feldolgozta. Legyen szó akár csendéletrôl, portréról, tájképrôl, vagy dokumentumfotóról, bizonyos regionális stílusok és áramlatok mindig megfigyelhetôek. Bizonyosan igaz például, hogy a divatfotó és a paparazzi stílusú fotóújságírás nem játszik komoly szerepet Magyarország fotográfiai gyakorlatában. Ugyanakkor a századfordulótól egészen a jelenig a magyar fotográfia fontos szerepet töltött be a fotográfiai áramlatok alakulásában Európa-szerte. Az országban jelenleg is elismerten magas a képzômûvész fényképészek száma. Talán sok mindent elárul, hogy számos magyar család tudja felidézni, miként alakították át fürdôszobájukat mûködôképes sötétkamrává lelkes rokonaik segítségével. Az elôhívás és nagyítás, a családi fotóval való kísérletezés ma is az egyik jellemzô vonulata az élô és ható fotográfiai kultúrának. Budapesttôl a Balatonig sok család építette fel saját kezûleg családi házát — az ilyesmi Nyugat-Európában már ritkaság. Ennek alapján némi szabad asszociáció segítségével talán azt is kimondhatjuk, hogy olyan embereken, akiknek megvan ehhez a kézügyességük, egy fényképezôgép-ház építése sem fog ki. Egyéb fontos kiállítások mellett a Magyar Fotóbiennálé eseményei lehetôséget nyújtanak ez efféle építkezésre a panoráma, sötétkamra, síkfilm technikai témáin keresztül. Itt a 30 x 40 cm-es formátumú kamerákat, a 360 fokos látképeket, tûlyukacsos kamerákat és az üveglemezes negatívokat a kritikusok és a nagyközönség egyaránt érdeklôdéssel fogadják.

A képkészítés folyamatának fizikai vonatkozásai legalább olyan fontosak, mint a képi világ, hiszen a a képi szintaxis megértése révén „olvasni tudjuk” és dialógust folytatunk a tárggyal. Bár a

nyugati film és fotópapírgyárók jelen vannak az országban, a magyar Forte cég sok olyan hagyományos papírt és terméket gyárt, amellyel más cégek nem foglalkoznak. A kép-készítés eszközei révén elérhetô finom megoldások és a függetlenség még inkább megkapó a kommersz fotó egyre gyorsuló korában. Könnyen lehet, hogy a globális, multinacionális világ csodáinak elutasítása az egész térség esztétikájában fontos elemnek tekinthetô.

A kortárs mûvészet kérdéseirôl szólva a kézmûvesség talán problematikus kifejezésnek tünhet, ám vannak minôségek, amelyeket csak a jól képzett kéz és szem képes megragadni. A mélyen gyökerezô kézmûves hagyományok ma is léteznek és szükségszerûen befolyásolják a mûveket. Az alapvetô anyagok — üveg, papír, fény és emulzió — ismerete strukturálja a munkát, s egyúttal implikálja a fotó szenzuális könnyedségét.

A „fotográfia antikvárius avantgárdja" kifejezés a lehetô legrelevánsabb egy olyan idôszakban, amely hátra tekintve néz elôre. Az évszádos technikák iránt megnyilvánuló új keletû érdeklôdés felkeltéséhez már eddig is sok magyar fotós járult hozzá. A Magyarországról származó fényképészek New Yorktól Párizsig részt vesznek abban az új mozgalomban, amely a fotográfia rövid de annál mozgalmasabb történetének hôskorából meríti ihletét. A cianotípia, az albumin nyomat vagy a sónyomat egyaránt a múltra utalnak, mégis új lehetôségeket nyitnak a fotográfiai lehetôségek posztmodern nyelve elôtt. A pixelnek megvan a maga helye, mégsem több az ábécé egyetlen betûjénél. Egy tárgy alakítása és nem puszta lefotózása a kulcsa a régi technikák újra éledésének, mely elsôsorban a tisztánlátás (a tiszta látvány) és a naivitás ellentétérôl szól.

A mûvészettörténet e posztmodern fázisában nem könnyû kate

gorizálni a stílusokat és áramlatokat. Budapest kiállítótermeiben azonban úgy tûnik, a fekete-fehér fotók játsszák a fôszerepet. Ennek egyik oka az lehet, hogy a színes fotográfiai anyagokat sokan a hirdetés és divat kommerciálisabb világával azonosítják, de talán az is, hogy a sok fotómûvész szívesebben nagyít és manipulál fekete-fehér anyagot. Nyilvánvalónak látszik, hogy komoly érdeklôdés mutatkozik meg a kísérletezés, az új keresése iránt, lett-légyen absztrakt, direkt vagy konceptuális alapú képalkotásról szó.

A Bolt Galéria 1994 óta adja- és állítja ki ezeket a kísérletezô munkákat a legkülönbözôbb hátterû mûvészek a lehetô legszélesebb fotográfiai spektrumot felölelô alkotásait. Így az általuk bemutatott mûvészek között felfelé törekvô új tehetségek és nagynevû fényképészek egyaránt szerepelnek.

A magyar fotográfia jövôje ismeretlen, de tele van nagy lehetôségekkel és a mai megnyitóhoz hasonló kiállítások révén egyre szélesebb közönséghez jut el.

Grâceasaplaceaucentregéographique de l’Europe, on a souvent qualifié Budapest, Hongrie, de creuset entre l’Est et l’Ouest. Jusqu’aux années trente, la Hongrie était l’un des pays les plus actifs dans le monde au point de vue de la photographie, mais la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale et le Communisme ont mis fin à cette activité. La démocratie apporta de nouvelles possibilités et de nouvelles influences, et l’existence d’une période de transition entre “fermé” et “en train d’ouvrir” est apparemment un motif pertinent dans tous les domaines expressifs de la vie culturelle en Hongrie à cette époque. A travers les oeuvres bien réalisées, on sent une certaine fragilité. Un fil fin entre la perte et l’acquis dans une Europe toujours changeante.

Incertitudes et inconnues sont toujours présentes chez les artistes de l’Europe centrale. Larmes au milieu des rires––une sensibilité à ce qui est noir dans le comique est l’un des éléments importants dans les traditions culturelles de la région. Un pays dans lequel l’Est et l’Ouest se rencontrent est exposé à un conflit au niveau de son identité culturelle, et cela se voit à travers ses arts plastiques.

Définir la photographie hongroise serait difficile et, au même temps, inutile. Cependant, on reconnaît, peut-être, une certaine clarté de vue que la photographie, seule, rend possible, une gamme tonale que l’oeil intelligent sait déchiffrer. De la même façon qu’un auditeur entend une rapsodie quelconque, l’esprit, le choix de sujet et l’effet de la composition définissent l’héritage de l’artiste. Le milieu urbain grandiose et historique de Budapest influe énormément sur les artistes qui travaillent dans cette ville.

On y trouve des ateliers photographiques où l’échange des idées et des avis entre les deux côtés de la ville, Buda et Pest, prend lieu. Il

y a une communauté de photographes vibrante et active, professionnels autant qu’amateurs.

Mémoire et déchéance, perte et approbation, naissance et mort autant de thèmes universels explorés dans tous les genres de la photographie. Dans les natures mortes, l’art du portrait, les paysages ou les documentaires, on reconnaît certains styles et certaines tendances régionaux. Il est certainement vrai que la photographie de la mode et le photojournalisme du style des paparazzi ne jouent pas un rôle important dans la pratique de la photographie en Hongrie. Dès le début de la vingtième siècle jusqu'aujourd’hui, la photographie hongroise a été au premier plan du développement des tendances photographiques dans toute l’Europe. Actuellement, on reconnaît la Hongrie comme pays riche en photographes qui appartiennent au domaine des beaux-arts.

Il est intéressant que beaucoup de Hongrois se souviennent des enthousiastes dans leur famille qui ont aménagé une salle de bains en chambre noire photographique tout a fait opérationnelle.

Le désir de développer et de tirer des épreuves, d’expérimenter sur des photos de famille, est peut-être l’un des caractéristiques d’une culture photographique vivante et active. De Budapest jusqu’au lac de Balaton, beaucoup de familles se construisent des maisons — cela ne se fait pas autant dans l’Europe de l’Ouest. On peut imaginer que, ayant la dextérité nécessaire pour construire une maison, ces gens soient aussi capables de bricoler une chambre noire. Plusieurs expositions importantes, telles que la Photo Biennale en Hongrie, ont révélé — à travers des thèmes purement techniques comme le panorama, la chambre obscure, le film en feuille, et cetera — la valeur de ces «ateliers maisons». Des appareils photos du format 30 x 40 cm, des panoramas de 360 degrés, et des appareils à sténopé avec trous multiples, et des

négatifs sur plaque de verre ont tous été présentés, et ont tous été bien reçus par les critiques autant que par le public.

L’aspect physique de la production des images est tout aussi important que l’image elle-même. La syntaxe picturale nous permet de lire, et, donc, de dialoguer avec l’objet. Fabricants de pellicule et de papier photographique sont venus en Hongrie de l’Europe de l’Ouest, mais Forte, le fabricant hongrois, fournit des papiers et des produits traditionnels que l’on ne trouve pas chez les autres fabricants. La nuance et l’indépendance, réalisées à l’aide des instruments qui créent les images, ont un caractère poignant dans une époque de tirage rapide commercial. Le refus d’embrasser toutes les merveilles du monde global et multinational est peut-être important dans l’esthétique de la région. Le concept de l’artisanat est difficile d’insérer dans une analyse de la culture contemporaine. Néanmoins, certaines qualités sont exprimées par les yeux et les mains bien exercés. De fortes traditions artisanales existent, et leur influence doit survivre. Une familiarité avec les matières essentielles, comme le verre, le papier, la lumière et les émulsions, prête une structure aux œuvres et une aisance sensuelle aux épreuves photographiques.

La pertinence du concept de «l’avant-garde ancien» de la photographie est évidente dans une époque où on regarde en arrière en même temps que l’on tourne vers l’avenir. Beaucoup de photographes hongrois ont contribué à un intérêt renouvelé dans les techniques séculaires. De New York à Paris, les photographes hongrois appartiennent à un mouvement nouveau, bien que mal défini, inspiré par le début de l’histoire de la photographie — une histoire relativement courte mais toujours en évolution. Le cyanotype, et l’utilisation de l’albumen et du sel dans le tirage des épreuves viennent tous du passé mais ouvrirent des possibilités

nouvelles de créer une langue photographique postmoderne. Il y a une place pour le pixel, mais il fait certainement partie d’un alphabet plus grand. Fabriquer les objets plutôt que les prendre en photo cela est la clef de ce renouveau des anciennes pratiques. On peut parler d’une vision pure par opposition à la naïveté.

Il est difficile de classer les styles et les tendances dans cette phase postmoderne de l’histoire de l’art. Néanmoins, on peut dire que la photographie en noir et blanc domine dans les palais des expositions à Budapest. C’est peut-être parce que la photographie en couleur est associée plutôt avec le monde commercial de la publicité et de la mode, et aussi parce que beaucoup de photographes artistiques préfèrent travailler avec les matériaux en noir et blanc. Il est évident que l’intérêt se concentre surtout dans l’expérimental, dans la quête du nouveau, à travers les images soit abstraites, soit traditionnelles, soit conceptuelles. La galerie Bolt publie et expose ce genre de photographie depuis 1993, et présente une large gamme d’œuvres photographiques d’une grande variété d’origines. La galerie a contribué énormément à la représentation des œuvres par des photographes prometteurs aussi bien que par des artistes établis.

L’avenir de la photographie hongroise nous est inconnu, mais il est riche en possibilités. Expositions telles que celle-ci va l’ouvrir à un public de plus en plus grand.

Following matriculation I graduated from a technical university college.After college I worked in the chemical industry for two years.I am engaged to work as a photographer since 1985 first for a planning institute, later and at present for the Postal Museum in the capacity of photographer and photograph archivist. I gained membership to the Young Photo-artists Studio in 1987. I maintained membership of the Studio till 1991. Since that time I keep close contacts with “United Photos”, established and run by former Studio members.
