A natureza da multiplicidade é não-dual, e as coisas por si mesmas são puras e simples — estar aqui e agora é livremente constituído e é radiante em todas as formas —numa boa — acontece já perfeito — qualquer empenho é redundante e a espontaneidade é sempre imanente.

The nature of multiplicity is nondual and things in themselves are pure and simple.

Being here and now is construct free and it shines out in all forms, always all good; it is already perfect, so exertion is redundant and spontaneity is ever-immanent.

The cart before the horse

Estamos perante uma realidade de que ignoramos a substância.

Protagonizamos uma personagem que se desconhece.

No entanto, devemos a cada passo tomar decisões que nos definem.

O labirinto de incompetência que sem cessar exercemos, pode, a cada momento, abandonar-nos para que fiquemos confrontados com a única certeza.

Reconhecemos nesse instante a plenitude imperdível.

A bidimensionalidade que é apanágio da pintura projecta-nos paradoxalmente para além da aparente dualidade temporal.

Para que tal possa ser vivido devemos prescindir tanto de certezas como de hábitos. É retrospectivamente que vejo confirmados os princípios orientadores duma percepção válida e abrangente.

De outro modo seria como “pôr o carro à frente dos bois”…

We face a reality whose substance we ignore.

We play the role of a character who does not know himself no one knows.

At every step we have to take decisions that define us.

At any time, the maze of incompetence we endlessly follow may leave us to face the only certainty.

In that instant, we recognize an unforgettable plenitude.

The two-dimensionality proper to painting projects us paradoxically beyond apparent temporal duality.

We have to give up both certainties and conventions if we want to experience it.

In retrospect, I can see the confirmation of the guiding principles of valid and far-reaching perception.

Otherwise it would be like "putting the cart before the horse"...

Há mais de 20 anos que frequento o VP em diferentes regiões, casas e ateliers - só p'ra terem uma ideia, quando primeiro o conheci era magrinho - nunca o vi pintar, mermo.

Se bem convivo com trinchas, usadas e por estrear, aparafusadas a cabos de vassoura e penduradas confortavelmente num móvel improvisado com rodas - e é que no VP mais ou menos tudo é improvisado e com rodas - com os pesados rolos de tela virgem de linho, com manchas coloridamente desavergonhadas no chão por todo lado, com o engradeamento de novos trabalhos e outros primos a enfeitarem paredes inteiras... nem uma vez só contemplei o íntimo acto.

Fui e sou testemunho e (quero pensar) às vezes cúmplice de quase todos os restos. Coisas algumas milagrosamente invisíveis, aparentemente inúteis e maiormente de natureza espontânea, sem as quais a pintura não teria as condições necessárias para se manifestar como ela o faz. É à volta desse universo profundamente caótico, enraizadamente contraditório (não há contradição pois), impregnado de muitos vícios autodestrutivos (visualizar a morte relaxada a dar uma passinha), generoso nas frases feitas assim como naquelas ainda por fazer, é à volta deste universo repito que eu poderei escarafunchar umas palavritas. [...] Sensualidade é a união entre gratidão e generosidade, disse o VP no outro dia ao almoço... e quanto a mim, não interessa se

I’ve visited VP for over 20 years in different regions, homes and studios – just to give you an idea, he was thin when I first met him - and I’ve never actually seen him paint, at all.

Though I’m always around new or unused paint brushes screwed onto broom handles and hanging comfortably on an improvised piece of furniture on wheels (at VP’s place more or less everything is improvised and has wheels), heavy rolls of blank linen canvas, unashamedly colourful patches of paint all over the floor, the stretching of new work and other work adorning whole walls.

I have never once watched him in the intimate act of painting.

I have been and continue to be a witness and (I’d like to think) sometimes a co-conspirator in almost all the rest.

Some things are miraculously invisible and mostly spontaneous, and without which, the conditions for the way his painting is expressed wouldn’t be there.

It’s around his profoundly chaotic and highly contradictory world (there’s no contradiction), deeply permeated with other selfdestructive vices (visualising a tranquil death while taking a toke), generous in his set phrases as well as the ones he creates once again I would say that I can come up with some words to say about this world. [...] Sexuality is the union of gratitude and generosity, said VP one day at lunch... And it doesn’t matter to me whether the

a frase é de cunho próprio e praticada como Koan-vivo reflectindo-se em cada gesto do (ser) artista, ou se foi resgatada de algum livro-panfleto-comentário-do-face terapêuticos de libertação sexual última ou proferida pelo derradeiro shaman-guru ao uso, o importante está na forma sentida e honesta quanto fresca como foi dita... REF fingidor*.

A pintura do VP também é assim que eu a sinto, que a vivo... sem a catrefada de teoria transcendental, sem ego, desatada, destapada, despojada e ao mesmo tempo atenta, brincalhona, provocadora, pulsante... Uma pintura grávida do seu próprio caminhar, a descoberta do que ela é, curiosa, viva! Uma pintura a deixar-se ser contemplada, a deixar-se ser realizada em cada novo olhar - pois quem olha sempre igual p'rás coisas já está um bocado morto uma pintura a deixar-se parir a exprimir- se por um indivíduo tal como o VP. Não digo mais se não estrago tudo.

What is important is the heartfelt, honest and refreshing way it was said... REF faker*.

I feel and experience VP’s painting like that as well...without all the endless transcendental theory, without ego, unfettered, uncovered, uncluttered and, at the same time, watchful, playful, provocative and pulsating. Painting pregnant with its own journey, the discovery that what it is - curious, alive! Painting that allows itself to be contemplated, allows itself to be manifested every time we look at it – because a person who always looks at things the same way has already died a little – a painting which allows itself to be born and expressed by a person like VP. I’ll say no more or I’ll spoil everything.

Autopsicografia, se refere a uma arte tradicional há muito desaparecida e que é desconhecida do público em geral. Fingidor é o nome dado ao pintor especializado na representação de falso mármore com que decorava as paredes das casas. Muitas casas, tanto em Lisboa como no Algarve (que Pessoa visitou com alguma frequência e onde ainda hoje residem familiares seus, além de que Álvaro de Campos é dado como nascido em Tavira) são decoradas com imitação de mármore.

A palavra fingidor, tal como muitas outras palavras portuguesas, termina com o sufixo -dor, que significa qualidade ou actividade: fingidor, controlador, etc.

Não podemos deixar de especular acerca da constante presença de dor na lingua portuguesa, na medida em que o caracter do povo parece impregnado de dor e sofrimento como sendo um estado natural subjacente à própria vida.

Não é de estranhar que este poema seja um dos mais conhecidos e citados da obra de F. Pessoa.

"Autopsychography", is related to a traditional craft that has long since disappeared and is unknown to most people. Fingidor was the name given to a painter who specialised in decorating walls withfake marble. Many houses in Lisbon, as well as in the Algarve, which was often visited by Pessoa because some of his relatives lived and still live there (Álvaro de Campos was said to have been born in Tavira), are decorated with fake marble. The word fingidor, like many other Portuguese words, bears the suffix -dor which, taken on its own, means pain and, as a suffix, means a quality or activity: a fingidor is a person who fakes or pretends, while a controlador is a person who controls, etc. We could even speculate about the prevalence of dor in the Portuguese language, in the sense that the character of the people seems to be infused with pain and suffering as a natural condition underlying life itself. It is no surprise that the poem "Autopsychography" is one of the best known and frequently cited works of Fernando Pessoa This is my 2 cents worth...

RECIPE FOR A BLACK AND WHITE PAINTING

Andar à volta da folha pousada no chão: é branca e ignora alto e baixo.

Ao descobrir um ponto fraco (ou acolhedor?): usar um pincel carregado de tinta preta; o ataque (ou carícia) ficará marcado, visível.

Baralhar as pistas.

Trocar as voltas ao acaso.

Destruir tudo.

Escutar a luz.

Quando tudo está partido, tudo se segura: insuportável gratificação.

Voltar as costas.

Opressivo, o reverso da sedução?

Walk around the canvas lying on the floor: It is white and knows neither up nor down.

When you discover a weak (or inviting?) spot: Use a brush with black paint; The attack (or caress) will leave its mark and be visible.

BIOGRAFIA

BIOGRAPHY

Aos 21 anos cheguei à Holanda como refugiado e refractário ao exército português, então comprometido com uma guerra colonial que haveria, quatro anos depois, de dar origem ao chamado ’25 de Abril’.

Foi com 42 anos que cheguei à Índia pela primeira vez, onde permaneci cerca de ano e meio, distribuídos por 3 anos e onde tive oportunidade de receber inúmeros ensinamentos no quadro do budismo tibetano e prosseguir alguns retiros solitários.

Sinto-me hoje como que sentado em diversas cadeiras, a saber as artes plásticas tal como são entendidas no ocidente, e a espiritualidade, nas suas diversas vertentes, desde o Zen ao tantra cachemiriano e ao dzogchen, a que em boa hora se veio juntar alguma aproximação ao xamanismo e às culturas nativas não escritas.

Vítor Pomar nasceu em Lisboa em 1949, vive e trabalha em Assentiz, Rio Maior.

I went to the Netherlands at the age of 21, as a refugee who refused the Portuguese draft. At that time Portugal was engaged in a colonial war that would bring the revolution known as the '25th April ' four years later.

I was 42 when I went to India for the first time. I stayed there for about a year and a half over a period of three years, received many teachings in Tibetan Buddhism and went on some solitary retreats.

Today I feel as if my knowledge stretches across various domains such as fine art, as it is understood in the West, and spirituality in its various forms, including Zen Buddhism, Kashmiri Tantra and Dzogchen, which over time has been joined by studies of shamanism and the unwritten native cultures.

I was born in Lisbon in 1949 and live and work in Assentiz, Rio Maior.
