Dos outros lugares, sem memória Aqui a paisagem é inventada, recriada, resgatada como género à pintura e ao desenho, o detalhe e a imprecisão de algo distante, a potência da firmeza da figura que se destaca, a semelhança com qualquer outra paisagem que já vimos, ou que imaginámos, mas também o olhar do artista sobre uma forte tradição na história da representação visual, enquanto resposta perante a possibilidade de produzir uma imagem segundo uma natureza possível, sonhada e alicerçada na literatura, na poesia e de certa forma numa cosmografia de referentes românticos.

As obras que constituem esta exposição revelam uma aura melancólica, não só pela sua tonalidade densa, mas porque se aproximam por um lado do chiaroscuro, que desde o séc. XV até ao período romântico acentua um pendor dramático, e assim psicológico, presente nas pinturas e nos desenhos deste longo período da história da PT arte. Por outro lado, contudo, os desenhos de Romão confrontam-nos também com uma subtil contradição que nos propõe um diálogo na relação entre a figura e o fundo, este último trabalhado segundo uma técnica próxima do sfumato. O seu processo técnico é importante porque revela uma proficiência no sentido de não ser refém de um virtuosismo realista, mas também porque não despreza a memória da mão que esbate o contraste e que desenha com precisão e vigor até o mais ínfimo detalhe da figura, que se aproxima do observador como se estivesse em permanente movimento.

Os desenhos são executados a carvão sobre papel, revelando essa densidade, anteriormente referida, que trabalha a luz como uma penumbra ou, inversamente, a alvura do fundo quase branco (a textura do papel) como no desenho N.º 10. Esta relação entre a forma e o fundo, independentemente do tratamento a que este é sujeito, revela-nos uma outra condição da construção destas paisagens: um factor cumulativo, de sobreposição e de excesso, como se esta ideia de natureza, não conhecida nem habitada, encontrasse a sua residência no título desta série, “Dos Lugares Onde Nunca Estive”.

Esses lugares têm, contudo, uma estreita ligação ao quotidiano do autor, ao silêncio, à procura incessante dessa natureza primeva que Filipe Romão cria a partir das paisagens que percorre por entre a variada florestação da Serra de Sintra, na sua vizinhança. Dessa natureza matricial pouco resta, porque a paisagem é uma construção humana, e neste aspecto as paisagens desenhadas correspondem a uma possibilidade de representar um desejo de as conhecer, não como foram, mas como são no seu imaginário agregando entidades fantásticas, como arvoredos, ou extensões campestres como mantos indistintos transmutados pela velatura que dá corpo a essas figuras arbóreas.

Esta série de desenhos convoca também uma ausência, não apenas da figura humana, mas essencialmente da sua passagem, sendo por isso mesmo a invenção de um diário sem tempo, e sem ordem, como se todos os modelos de paisagem se unificassem em cada uma destas imagens, e no interior de cada uma nascessem ainda outras, numa constante reinvenção, que parecendo-nos familiares exibem um PT aparente equilíbrio da composição, contrário a essa idealização de uma paisagem natural que nos é anterior. Não encontramos qualquer indício, ou referência, que nos situe perante estas vedute tão comuns na sua aparência mas simultaneamente tão estranhas pela profusão de elementos que acentua o silêncio que sentimos ao pensarmos um qualquer lugar, em que cabem todos os lugares da natureza onde nunca estivemos.

From the other places, with no memory Here the landscape is invented, recreated and rescued as gender of painting and drawing. The landscape has the detail and imprecision of something distant, the firmness power of a figure that stands out and the resemblance to any other landscape that we have already seen, or imagined. It also has the artist's view of a strong tradition in the history of visual representation as an answer to the possibility of producing an image according to a possible nature, dreamed and grounded in literature, poetry and, to a certain extent, a cosmography of romantic referents.

The works that make up this exhibition reveal a melancholy aura, not only because of its dense tonality, but because they approach on one side of the chiaroscuro, which since the 19th century. XV up to the romantic period accentuates a dramatic, and thus psychological, penchant, present in the paintings and drawings of EN this long period of art history. On the other hand, however, Romão's drawings also confront us with a subtle contradiction that proposes a dialogue in the relation between the figure and the background, the latter worked according to a technique close to the sfumato. Its technical process is important because it reveals a proficiency in the sense of not being hostage to a realistic virtuosity. It also not despise the memory of the hand that fades the contrast and that draws with precision and vigour down to the smallest detail of the figure, that approaches the observer as if in permanent motion.

The drawings are carried out on charcoal on paper, revealing this density referred to above, which works the light as a penumbra or, conversely, the whiteness of the almost white background (the texture of the paper) as in drawing Nº. 10. This relationship between form and background, whatever the treatment to which it is subject, reveals another condition for the construction of these landscapes: a cumulative, overlapping and excess factor, as if this idea of nature, unknown or inhabited, encountered his residence in the title of this series, "Dos Lugares Onde Nunca Estive" (“From the places where I've never been”).

These places, however, have a close connection to the author's daily life, to the silence, to the incessant search for this primeval nature that Philippe Romão creates from the landscapes he traverses through the varied forestation of the Sintra Mountains in his neighbourhood. Of this nature matrix there is little left, because the landscape is a human construction. In this aspect, the landscapes drawn correspond to a possibility of representing a desire to know them, not as they were, but as they are in their imaginary aggregating fantastic entities, such as groves, or country extensions like indistinct mantles transmuted by the vulture that gives body to these arboreal figures.

These drawings series also calls for an absence, not only of the human figure, but essentially of its passage. For that reason is the invention of a timeless diary, and without order, as if all models of landscape were unified in each of these images; and within each one were others still born. However, they would be in a constant reinvention, which, seeming familiar to us, exhibit an apparent balance of composition, EN contrary to this idealization of a natural landscape that precedes us. We find no clue, or reference, that places us before these vedute so common in their appearance but at the same time so strange by the profusion of elements that accentuates the silence that we feel when we think of any place, where all the places of nature fit where we have never been.

Biografia | Biography

Filipe Romão FILIPE ROMÃO nasceu em Lisboa, em 1981. Trabalha e vive em Sintra.

Licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas - Pintura, pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, em 2009. Em 2002 concluiu o Curso de Fotografia Profissional na ETIC – Escola Técnica de Imagem e Comunicação.
