Plágaro’s artistic career is best known for his Identical Paintings, which he began in the late 1980s and has been developing in a linear manner up to the present day, following the principle:
"The most important thing is not what it is, but that what it is, is several times."
The series are centered on the concept of repetition multiple canvases painted simultaneously to appear virtually identical. Placed next to each other at uniform distances, together form a single artwork, though each individual piece can also be recognized on its own They are, and at the same time are not, unique works This method challenges traditional notions of authorship, uniqueness, and the singular “masterpiece” in art. For Plágaro, these works form part of an infinite whole, where the arrangement and installation are just as important as the painting itself

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Plágaro began a new series titled Unidentical Paintings While this series breaks from the strict visual repetition of the earlier works, it retains the conceptual essence and artistic spirit, allowing more creative freedom and dynamic installation possibilities.

Alfredo Álvarez Plágaro was born in Vitoria, Spain, in 1960 After studying Fine Arts, he moved to Madrid, where he continues to live and work. His work has been widely exhibited both in Spain and internationally, including solo presentations at major art fairs like ART Basel, ART Düsseldorf, Pinta Miami and ART Genève
Although his style has evolved from figurative to more abstract forms, repetition remains the core of his visual language. He views each piece as a fragment of a larger, ongoing concept one that is both playful and profound.
Plágaro advocates for art that is accessible, enjoyable, and easy to understand. He often speaks about his work with humor and clarity, avoiding the cryptic language often associated with contemporary art He describes himself as a diligent, disciplined worker who does not rely on inspiration or "the muse" but rather sees art-making as a daily practice sometimes difficult, but ultimately vital to his life.
