VET Agriculture assist with regeneration project The VET Agriculture students took a short trip out to the McLeods property at Byawatha on Monday 2nd of August to assist with some tree planting as part of a regeneration project. The McLeods had fenced the gully, sprayed the area, and ordered all equipment required from their local Landcare group.

The students were extremely lucky with the weather on the day as it was fine and sunny; perfect tree planting weather. It was a great team effort from all the students, as there were various jobs to be completed. From digging the holes, planting the trees and shrubs, putting the guards up and then of course the cleaning up after ourselves. This was a good little practical project to finish off the students ‘Participate in environmentally sustainable work’ unit.

Introducing the new Galen Principal-elect, Darren “Darta” Hovey The Galen community is rejoicing in the appointment of a new Principal to begin at the beginning of the 2022 school year. Darta Hovey is no stranger to Galen having worked here from 2011 until the end of 2013 as our Deputy Principal – Learning & Teaching. After those three years he took up his current role as Principal of Catholic College Wodonga. Darta’s wife, Bel, is a valued member of staff at Galen where their youngest child, daughter Georgia, is in Year 7 this year.

Darta’s teaching career commenced in 1988 at St Mary’s Primary School in Ararat. From there he moved into secondary school teaching Marian College also in Ararat. He spent 2003 as Acting Principal at St Patrick’s in Stawell before moving back to Marian College the following year.

Darta, Bel and their family moved to Wangaratta at the start of 2011 to take up the DP role at Galen. Darta’s strengths lie in leadership development and learning & teaching. He has presented at multiple conferences and schools throughout Australia and also in Japan and New Zealand.

Galen is truly fortunate to have Darta Hovey returning to the school from the start of next year in the role of Principal. We are looking forward to a visit from Darta early in third term to meet with the Galen community of students, staff and families.

Once again, the Galen community shines in lockdown

College Captains and Vice Captains for 2022 We are also very proud to announce the 2022 student College Captains and Vice Captains. Over the past week we have been interviewing Year 11 students who applied for these senior student positions. What an incredible privilege to hear these young people speak of their love for the school, their desire to make a difference in making it an even better place and their understanding of what it means to be a servant leader in a Catholic school in this day and age.

We encountered such depth of leadership, care, passion, vision, commitment, loyalty, aspiration and inspiration!

With Term 3 now well under way the Galen community has demonstrated its experience and made the transition from on-site learning to remote learning and back again with seamless professionalism, resilience and know-how. Congratulations to the students and teachers in particular, but also to the parents for their role in keeping learning on-track, meaningful and continuous.

New Stadium and Performing Arts Centre for Galen in 2022 Plans are well advanced for the next phase of Galen’s capital works: doubling the size of the existing Sports Stadium and building our own Performing Arts Centre. These works will commence in the first half of 2022 with completion in early 2023.

The Sports Stadium expansion will see another full-sized basketball court added to the existing complex. The new facility will have the capacity to accommodate up to 1,500 people for whole school events as well as providing additional learning, training and court space.

The new Performing Arts Centre will feature a 600 seat theatre and will have the flexibility to provide 3 separate learning spaces, including a lecture theatre and proscenium stage. One can only imagine how this year’s major school productions of “Pan” and “Mamma Mia” might have looked in our own performance centre!

Meanwhile the new Landscaping Master Plan is nearing completion. This will continue to beautify the school’s already impressive gardens, lawns, courtyards and entrances.

These new capital works follow hot on the heels of the recently completed Parent Pick-Up & Drop-Off Zone and new onsite Bus Zone.

New Principal announced Galen is in the strong position of having appointed a new Principal to commence in 2022. Mr Darren “Darta” Hovey, currently Principal of Catholic College Wodonga, will take over the reins from the beginning of next year. Darta is no stranger to Galen, having spent three years as the school’s first ever Deputy Principal – Learning & Teaching. His strong focus on learning, teaching and leadership development will further strengthen Galen’s reputation as a leader in holistic education.

I am very happy to announce the newly appointed 2022 Galen Catholic College Captains and Vice Captains: College Co-Captains – Mietta Habets and Xavier McKenzie College Vice Captains – Molly Canning and Fergus McNamara Congratulations to Mietta, Xavier, Molly and Fergus: we look forward to seeing your leadership both on display and developing further in 2022.

Founders Day We are greatly looking forward to Founders Day this year which will be held on Wednesday August 18th. It’s the first year under our new 8-House structure. Students from all Houses will be engaged in activities, competitions and ceremonies marking the extraordinary story of our school’s heritage and history, that harks back to 1888 and includes our founding schools of St Joseph’s College, Champagnat College and Galen College.

Congratulations, Galen’s Deputy Principals All three of Galen’s Deputy Principals, Pat Arcuri, Dale Gleeson and Jim Samon have recently undergone performance appraisals as part of their contractual obligations.

I am extremely proud of the work of the three Deputy Principals, all of whom have received glowing affirmations of their work in Pastoral Wellbeing, Learning & Teaching and Catholic Identity, respectively.

A number of staff, parents and students participated in the appraisals providing valuable feedback to the appraisal panels. Galen’s leadership is indeed in great shape!

Integrated Studies Seeds of Change - Tolpuddle trip

As a part of our seeds of change unit in integrated studies, we visited the tolpuddle cheese puddle to see how local produce is produced and to meet the farmers and learn about their passion for agriculture.

Today we went to visit Tolpuddle Cheese Farm, we did a few things like feeding and playing with the goats and having a tour of the cheese room. Donavan, one of the farmers and owners, told us all about him and his wife's journey in becoming cheese makers and farmers. Donavon spoke to us about how he and his wife, Melissa and two kids Mackensie and Harvey lived in Melbourne, had a lot of debt, a large mortgage and a nanny. This lifestyle made them want a change and more family time, so they moved down to rural Victoria and bought a farm in December 2013, they then got saanen goats which they use for milk to then create cheese. Melissa is their cheese maker and she learnt from a school in South Australia. We also learnt a little bit about how the farming works, they milk 40 goats a day during the on season, because they do have dry seasons where they can’t

produce milk and cheese. Another feature of goat farming is the coloured chains around the goats neck, along with a name tag and sometimes a bell. The different coloured chains show how old the goat is. They get one buck who goes in with the girls for a month or two and then he goes back to another farm once he’s done his work. The males or bucks that are born then stay around for 6 months then get sent off to market where they end up being eaten.

We learned how the process of cheese making unfolds, we visited the cheese making room and learnt about the amount of chemicals and money spent on the floors as they are the same type that are in theatre rooms. At Tolpuddle, they create and produce 6 types of cheese, some hard and some soft. The difference between the two is the aging process.

The soft cheeses are only aged a week, the hard cheeses are aged for years.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Due to COVID this year the Social Justice team was required to do things a little differently for St Vinnies.

This year’s focus is on the homeless. Wangaratta is no different to other towns and cities with homeless numbers increasing. The need for warm blankets is particularly important over winter. With this in mind the team organised a casual clothes day on Friday 25th June and all proceeds go to the Wangaratta St Vinnies where they will buy blankets for local and surrounding homeless people.

Studio Art see Textiles Awards at Wangaratta Art Gallery Year 12 Studio Arts students enjoyed being back in the classroom (briefly!), and went on an excursion to Wangaratta Gallery last Wednesday 4th August to see the current Textiles Awards exhibition. The main focus for the students was to see how the gallery functions as a council-funded gallery. The students experienced an informative talk by Inga, the gallery Education Officer, about how the gallery curates their shows and how they care for the Wangaratta Art Collection.

Year 8 Girls Soccer

On Monday 21st June the Year 8 girls’ soccer team travelled to Wodonga to compete in the Upper Hume competition.

They won both their pool matches, 5/2 against Catholic College Wodonga and 9/0 against Wangaratta High School and followed this up with a great win in the grand final, 2/0 against Wodonga Middle Years.

Estelle Hernandez, who did extremely well as goalkeeper and even saved a penalty in the grand final, Ella Antonello and Lucy O’Connor who were very solid all day in defence, and Ruby Snowdon, Taite Sims and Reece Chuck who continually chased and propelled the ball forward to score many goals.

The team consisted of Jo Sommerville, Ruby Snowdon, Georgie Canning, Annie Harding, Lily Dal Zotto, Ella Antonello, Taite Sims, Emily Ciccone, Sarah Hamill, Zoe Davis, Taylah Cryer, Reese Chuck, Lucy O’Connor, Lucy Dwyer, Estelle Hernandez and Issy Parker. Everyone played their part in each of the wins but standout players for the day were:

Well done, everyone. It was a pleasure coaching you. Thanks also goes to Yr 9 student, Sophie Sacco, who gave up her day to be our lineswoman and to Noah Campbell, who acted as our equipment manager. As Upper Hume champions, the girls will now go on to represent their region in the next level of competition. Good luck to everyone involved.

Year 8 Boys Soccer

On Monday 21st June, the Year 8 Boys soccer team consisting of Hunter Barry, Sam Sacco (Vice Captain), Charlie York, Kaedon Burrows, Harvey O’Keefe, Henry Dean, Darby Parr, Hamish Lewis, Gabriel Humhreys, Marcello Mendoza, Archer Hill (Captain), Selby Doyle, Liam Cooper, Mossy Alker Jones, Cashen Monk, Jack Whiley and Max Startin (injured) departed for Willow Park in Wodonga at 8:30am.

Galen was placed in Pool A with Catholic College Wodonga and Wangaratta High School. Galen was to play Catholic College Wodonga in the first game which would prove to be their final. Both teams had strong soccer players in their squads.

After a very difficult first half Galen held a very strong Catholic College Wodonga to a 0 – 0 draw. Goal keeper Hunter Barry was very strong in goal and midfielder Jack Whiley was tireless with his run and support. Coach Mr Arcuri asked the boys to control the midfield in the second half as Catholic College Wodonga were strong in this area.

Unfortunately for the Galen team the Catholic College Wodonga team began to step up their intensity and began to expose gaps in the midfield . Despite some great defending from the likes of Kaedon Burrows, Charlie York, Cashen Monk and goal keeper Hunter Barry, Catholic College Wodonga scored two late goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to win the game.

In the second game Galen played against Wangaratta High School and won 7 - 2. Goal scorers were Jack Whiley 2, Liam Copper 2, Archer Hill 1, Shelby Doyle 1 and Hamish Lewis 1.

Forwards Liam Cooper, Shelby Doyle, Gabriel Humhreys and Archer Hill all looked dangerous going forward. Midfielders Hamish Lewis, Sam Sacco, Jack Whiley, Harvey O’Keefe and Mossy Alker Jones were running hard and making plenty of passes. Well done to defenders Darby Parr, Henry Dean, Marcello Mendoza and Cashen Monk were very solid and strong in defence. Best players were Jack Whiley, Hamish Lewis, Archer Hill, Sam Sacco and Kaedon Burrows.

Year 7 Boys Soccer and Year 7 Girls Soccer - Upper Hume Champions 2021

The year 7 boys’ soccer team played in the Upper Hume soccer competition that was held at Willow Park Wodonga on Wednesday 23rd June.

Vescio. Galen’s best player in this match was easily Tom Wiedeman who cleared the ball out of dangerous situations numerous times. Final score 1-0 to Galen.

In what proved to be a very even contest between the four schools who entered, it was Galen who emerged victorious, winning all three of their games.

Galen’s player of the day was Ashley Primerano who controlled the mid field and provided a link between defence and attack. Special mention to Tom Wiedeman, Fraser D’Agostino and Mitchell Vescio who played well in all three games. The other members of the squad were Brodie Tyers, Chris Lestino, Tim Bigger, Charlie Maher, Keenan Peruzzo, Jacob Saunders, Dexter Hill, Koen Eykenboom, Cooper Eykenboom, Pat Bennett, Lucas Webb and Josh White.

In game one against Wodonga Middle Years College things weren’t looking too good for Galen when they trailed 1-3 early in the second half. However, two pieces of individual brilliance, one from Fraser D’Agostino and another from Ashley Primerano resulted in goals which saw Galen snatch a very exciting 4-3 win. Tom Wiedeman led the defence, Mitchell Vescio dominated in a wide midfield role as did Tim Bigger. Jacob Saunders also defended well.

The second game against Victory College was closer than the final score line of 3-0 suggests. Fraser D’Agostino scored two goals and Keenan Peruzzo kicked another to secure the win.

Chris Lestino, Brodie Tyers and Charlie Maher played well as did Cooper and Koen Eykenboom who had an impact when they came onto the ground.

A win in their third match would ensure Galen safe passage into the regional finals, but Galen did not start well against Cathedral College Wangaratta. In fact, the Galen boys were outplayed for much of the first half and it was only the toe of goal keeper Charlie Maher who made a fine save that ensured the scores were level at half time.

At the interval, coaches Mitchell Schultz and Rory Harvey made multiple changes to the team line up. Although the Galen boys were still not playing at the same high level of their two previous games, they did manage to score the match winning goal through some great play by Mitchell

A big thank you to year 9 students Rory Harvey and Mitchell Schultz who did a great job coaching the team. Thanks also to our clothing and equipment manager Noah Campbell.

It was also great to see Mitchell Vescio’s grandparents at the soccer supporting the Galen team.

There were only two teams entered in the year 7 girls’ competition. In their one and only match Galen comfortably defeated Victory College Wodonga 4-2. All the girls enjoyed representing Galen and are looking forward to playing more soccer at the regional level next term. Special mention to Poppy O’Keeffe who played extremely well. She was well supported by Sofia Pasquali, Zephyra Guzel and Chloe Smith.

Other team members who contributed to the win were Cara Broady, Marley Carmody, Krystal Jones, Helaina Martino, Ada Overberg, Sadie Pellegrino, Matilda Scott, Lucinda Steel, Maya Vincent and Maddie White.

A big thank you to coach, year 10 student Jen Taylor, who was a great role model for the year 7 girls. Thanks also to Mrs Hill for her tactical advice and vocal support from the side lines.

Year 10 Girls Football

On Friday the 18th of June, the year 10 girls football team headed to Wodonga to play football against other school teams. The girls won their first game against Marian College which was a close game. They then, unfortunately, lost the next two games against Wodonga Catholic College and Wodonga Senior Secondary College in more close games. The main goalkickers for the day were Olivia Cheeseman, Ella Bradley, Carla Peterson and Emily Vincent.

Interschool Equestrian Competition

Remember that really cold weekend in the middle of the school holidays in July? With so many sporting competitions cancelled and postponed over the last two years, when the opportunity to compete arrives it is often met with gusto despite the weather. With the ‘feels like’ temperature hovering around 2˚C, what better thing to do than load up your horse and your winter camping gear to spend the weekend riding and camping at Elmore, near Bendigo.

On the 3rd and 4th July 2021, six determined young students represented Galen Catholic College at the 2021 Elmore Equestrian Club EA Interschool Qualifier held at Elmore Equestrian and Events Complex.

The Galen Team of 6 was made up of five year eight riders consisting of Felicity Murtagh riding Doug and Nugget,

Emily Curran riding Montana, Lauren Stone riding Barzi, Karlesha Dieckmann riding Snowy and Rylee Hooper riding Barambindi Finesse. They were joined by primary school team member Avah Curran riding Spotty. All riders competed in a number of varied events throughout the 2 days including dressage, showjumping, show riding classes, novelty and handy mount events.

Despite the absolutely freezing cold, wet conditions, the team all prepared and rode their horses with enthusiasm and great effort, proudly wearing their school uniform. While the team was in the younger age bracket for their categories, the girls all did an amazing job with a couple of podium results through out the competition and we can look forward to their endeavours in representing the college in future interschools equestrian sports competitions.

NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) On School Students with Disability What is the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data?

Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) every year. It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability.

Who is counted in the data collection?

To count a student in the NCCD, schools must think through some key questions: 1. Is the student getting help at school so that they can take part in education on the same basis as other students?

2. Is the help given because of a disability? The word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and it can include many students.

3. Has the school talked to you or your child about the help that they provide?

4. Has the school kept records about the help they provide, the student needs and the reasons that the student needs this help? The school will need to keep copies of tests, student work, assessments, records of meetings, medical reports or other paperwork and information about how the student’s learning is moving along over time.

Once the school decides that the student should be counted in the NCCD, they then choose a disability group and one of four levels of help that has been given to the student.

What does the word ‘disability’ mean in the NCCD? In the NCCD the word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). There are four types of disability that the school can choose from: sensory, cognitive, social-emotional and physical.

Many students that need help at school can be counted in the NCCD. For example, students with learning problems, e.g. specific learning disability or reading difficulty (sometimes called dyslexia), health problems (e.g. epilepsy or diabetes), physical disability (e.g. cerebral palsy), vision/hearing loss and social-emotional problems (e.g. selective mutism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety).

Letters from doctors or specialists can be very helpful for schools as they plan how to support students with their learning. Schools do not need to have these letters before they can count a

student in NCCD. Teachers can use all that they know about the student’s learning and the records that they have collected over time to decide if a student can be counted in the NCCD.

What sort of help does the school give students?

Students need different types of help at school. Some students need a little help sometimes while other students need a lot of help nearly all the time. The type of help given depends on the needs of the student. The help can include changes to the school buildings or grounds (e.g. ramps or things like special desks or chairs), extra teacher help in classes, special learning programs, changes to the work they give the student or extra adult help.

How will the NCCD be different this year?

All schools have been counting students in the NCCD since 2015. The government will use the NCCD data as part of the funding to schools.

What will the school need to know about my child for the NCCD? Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each child. It is helpful if families give their child’s teacher a copy of any letters or reports they have. The letters or reports will help the school understand the child and the help that they might need. Letters from doctors, psychologists, speech pathologists, doctor, and occupational therapists etc. can be very helpful for schools. These reports along with information that the teacher has (i.e. school based tests, your child’s work and learning plans) helps the school to understand and meet your child’s needs.

What happens to the NCCD data? Who will have the NCCD information?

Each school principal must check the NCCD data in August of each year. The school will give the information to the Catholic Education Office. The school will work with the Catholic Education Office to make sure that the NCCD data is OK before they give the data to the government. The government will not be given the names of any students or any letters or records. Please ask your school for their privacy policy if you need to know more.

Does the school need me to agree with them about counting my child in the NCCD? Amendments were made to the Australian Education Act 2013 and Australian Education Regulation 2013). Schools do not need you to agree to let them count a child in the NCCD. You cannot ask the school not to count your child.

REMOTE LEARNING GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS TERM 3 2021 REMOTE LEARNING @ GALEN Content, resources and instructions for each lesson will also be accessed via GoogleClassroom.

Students are required to follow their scheduled timetable as a means to organise their learning throughout each day. The current 10 day timetable will remain in place, with modified period timings as indicated by the schedule below.

Teachers and Learning Mentors will be available via email during their regular timetabled lessons. Students are encouraged to email during these times for assistance.

Your teacher will notify when you need to attend a GoogleMeet.

You will be able to monitor your child's learning progress via PAM. Class tasks will continue to be posted and you are encouraged to check in regularly. Also ask your child to show you their GoogleClassroom pages for further information about learning tasks each week.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS Students are required to attend Homeroom at 9.00 am Mon/Tue/Thur/Fri and 8.45 am Wed . This will be used to record attendance on Simon. Students are required to attend an extended Homeroom video conference via GoogleMeet Wednesday from 8.45 am.

Students are required to join GoogleMeets when requested by their teacher.

If your child is going to be absent or is unable to engage in remote learning on any day please email: absences@galen.vic.edu.au There are arrangements in place for families who do not have internet access. GoogleClassroom will be used to communicate instructions, materials and resources for lessons.

Your teachers will email you invitations to GoogleMeet video conferences when you are required to attend them.

Keep water and healthy snacks near by.

Stand up and stretch often. Plan for physical activity throughout the day.

STAYING CONNECTED There will be a compulsory homeroom via your homeroom GoogleClassroom at 9.00am Mon/Tue/Thur/Fri, and 8.45am Wednesday. Your homeroom teacher will hold a GoogleMeet each Wednesday from 8.45am - 9.15am. Join in to catch up and connect with your peers.

Your teacher will email you when a GoogleMeet is required.

All work will be posted to GoogleClassrooms.

Your teachers and Learning Mentors will be contactable via email during your normal scheduled periods. Check your emails regularly.

Remember the FIRST principles apply to online learning. Be respectful, act with integrity, showing care for yourself and others.

LEARNING AND WELLBEING RESOURCES The eResource Centre provides access to e-books, audiobooks, encyclopedias and subject resources. You can also email duty.librarian@galen.vic.edu.au if you need assistance with resources or research.

The Wellbeing Centre staff will be available via wellbeing@galen.vic.edu.au. You and your parents and guardians can also continue to contact your homeroom teacher via email firstname.lastname@galen.vic.edu.au.

VIDEO CONFERENCING PROTOCOLS FOR STUDENTS In alignment with Child Safe and Galen's Digital Citizenship Policy, always connect to a video conference from a communal space like your dining area or lounge, never from your bedroom or behind a closed door.

Dress for a video conference like you would for school on a casual clothes day. Wearing your school shirt is encouraged.

No pyjamas please.

When joining a GoogleMeet video conference; Always mute your microphone and camera. Your teacher will explain how to do this.

Normal school expectations including FIRST apply to all digital communications.
