VCAL Work Experience

Year 11 VCAL and all Year 10 students recently had the opportunity to complete their work placement/work experience.

Due to COVID restrictions some employers were not able to take students, which was very understandable, however the large number of students who could still attend through the experience was well worth it.

The variety of workplaces chosen by Galen students was enormous. Many students were involved in professional career experiences such as law, medicine, sports administration, agricultural science and research, teaching and architecture, while other students chose more trade-oriented work experience options. Electrical, motor mechanic, builder, plumber were all traditional trades that caught the interest of many Galen students. Some of these students performed so well

Mietta Habets (Yr11) , Brodie Watson (Yr11) and Jessica Gillies (Yr12) have just accepted scholarships to attend the 2021 Sydney University, Professor Harry Messel International Science School, during the upcoming school holidays.

120 Scholarships are available across Australia, and only 15 are allocated to Victorians students. To have three Galen students gaining scholarships to attend is a great source of pride for our school community, and highlights the strengths and character of these remarkable young people.

during their placement that at the end of the week they were offered either school-based or full time apprenticeships!

The benefits are endless. Work experience improves students understanding of the work environment and employers’ expectations, it provides the opportunity for parents to discuss with their child the topic of work, and employers get the chance to make a positive contribution to the education and development of students.

Galen is very appreciative of the employers who have given time and effort to our students and we thank them sincerely for their generosity.

A message from the Executive Director, Catholic Education Sandhurst

Dear Galen Catholic College Community,

I write to advise that the principal selection process for Galen Catholic College has now concluded. Accordingly, I am pleased to announce Mr. Darren (Darta) Hovey as the incoming Principal for Galen, from the commencement of the 2022 school year.

Darren commenced working in Catholic education in 1998 and has been principal of Catholic College Wodonga since 2014.

In this role he has led a community of 1250 students and over 170 staff. An ongoing learner himself, Darren has higher degrees in Management and Educational Leadership. In addition to his experience as principal, his

professional experience includes periods as deputy principal in the areas of pastoral wellbeing and learning and teaching.

A committed Catholic, Darren seeks opportunities to deepen his own spirituality and believes a key role of a leader in a Catholic school is to provide opportunities for students, staff and parents to engage with Jesus in their daily lives. He has overseen significant improvement agenda during his time at Catholic College Wodonga, most notably through a data driven approach to review and renewal of the learning and pastoral structures at the College.

It was pleasing to see the interest that this position generated amongst the community and in announcing Darren’s appointment I also thank the principal appointment panel for their work.

I am sure you will join with me in congratulating Darren on his appointment and in welcoming him as Principal of Galen Catholic College.

Students gain prestigious scholarships to attend the Professor Harry Messel International Science School Mietta Habets (Yr11) , Brodie Watson (Yr11) and Jessica Gillies (Yr12) have just accepted scholarships to attend the 2021 Sydney University, Professor Harry Messel International Science School, during the upcoming school holidays.

120 Scholarships are available across Australia, and only 15 are allocated to Victorians students. To have three Galen students gaining scholarships to attend is a great source of pride for our school community, and highlights the strengths and character of these remarkable young people.

The week long event will be held online this year, due to COVID19 restrictions, but that will not stop Meitta, Brodie and Jessica engaging with other like minded students and being exposed to some fabulous activities and a great line up of guest speakers, all leading scientists in their fields.

Guest speakers this year include: Cosmologist Prof. Geraint Lewis; computational neuroscientist (and International Science School alumna) Prof. Adrienne Fairhall from the University of Washington; solar energy pioneer Prof. Anita Ho-Baillie — not to mention the incomparable Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Sleek Geek and all-round science nut.

Even though they won’t be able to physically visit the Sydney University’s amazing research labs and classrooms, they will still get hands-on with experiments and tours virtually, and get to meet brilliant scientists as they show them around their labs, they will also work in small groups to solve problems with the ISS science outreach team.

Brodie Watson: “Recently, my attention has been drawn towards the fields of supercomputing and quantum computing. I don’t know a lot about either, but I’m very eager to expand my knowledge over these topics as I believe they are the key to new technology and advancements of the future.

What sparked my curiosity was a youtube clip I saw that spoke about how supercomputers are helping with COVID research. Then there was the Australian of the Year, Michelle Simmons who is at the cutting edge of quantum computing. I still don’t know what it is, but I think it is a very exciting concept. I can’t wait to be involved in this program” Mietta Habets: ”I’ve always been encouraged to pursue my interests and to learn not for the sake of an end goal, but for the knowledge itself. I really took this to heart when at six years old, I decided that I would become an astronomer.

I had always looked up at the night sky and wondered but now I also desired to understand. I wanted to understand what I was looking at, how it worked and how it all fit together and though these were big questions for a six-year4

old, I confidently set off on my first large scale quest for knowledge.

Although I have since moved on through future aspirations at a remarkable pace – astrobiologist, astronaut, cosmologist, astrophysicist - there has always been one constant among them and that is the thirst to understand what I see when I crane my head towards the sky. To see one of the speakers is a Cosmologist, Professor Geraint Lewis, has me extra excited about this program, as well as having the opportunity to engage with new and enthusiastic people who share a love for the exploration of ideas is a fantastic opportunity. Building a network of peers through a program like the International Science School will be an amazing foundation for future innovation and helping to form the world around us.

Jessica Gillies: “I am looking to expand my horizons and develop a new understanding of science and all the different ways in which it allows us to improve the world of those less fortunate. This viewpoint stemmed from my experiences in 2016 when I went on a missions trip to an aboriginal community in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, with my family, and then reinforced when, in 2019, I was given the opportunity to travel to Santa Teresa (a small aboriginal community in Central Australia) as a part of an immersion group with my school. I was able to see the world in a new light, as I left my comfort zone and lived in the worlds of people less fortunate than me. On return, I read about Fred Hollows and his foundation. It inspired me, and gave me a new perspective and an understanding of the value of one's own life, in terms of the impacts it can have on the lives of others. While I am yet to figure out exactly what I would like to do after finishing school, I am currently looking at going to university and studying to become an opthamologist, just like Fred Hollows. To connect with students and scientists from all sorts of fields through this wonderful program will further open my mind to the endless possibilities of a STEM pathway. The International Science School will assist me in seeing what possible directions my passion will take me.”

Bernard Neal: “It was an absolute pleasure to support Jessica, Brodie and Mietta in the application process. The positive comments received from their teachers made me extremely proud. Each one of them had their own unique story, and thoroughly deserves this fantastic recognition and reward for their hard work and dedication to their academic studies.

For all three to have gained these prestigious scholarships is truly a very proud moment for me and their families. I am sure they will soak in every bit of information during the program. I can’t wait to chat with them when we return next term.

Focus on VET

VCE VET Sport & Recreation Term 2 was a busy one for our VCE VET Sport & Recreation students. Our Unit 3 & 4 students worked with Mel Paul at the YMCA learning about how to motivate and connect with groups of people in a fitness setting. They also worked with GOTAFE students and Matt Dillion from Blue Earth looking at different ways to engage people in physical activity.

These experiences help to build confidence and broaden our student’s “tool kits” of skills to be able to apply to their own coaching competencies.

Working with our local Catholic Education Wangaratta Primary Schools is one of our favorite things to do. Our Unit 1 & 2 students were linked in with Netball Victoria Community Engagement Officer Chaye Crimmins. She helped to “coach the coaches” to skill them up to teach grades 3/4 and 5/6 classes some Netball skills. Over 5 weeks the students became the teachers and learnt valuable lessons about how to engage an audience and make activity sessions suitable for all skills levels and age groups.

VCAL Work Experience

“A couple of days later when the concrete set on the concrete slab we had poured, we marked and framed up the wall. Throughout the work placement I learnt how to frame up walls, read plans for trusses, how to whale the boxing and lots more; I cut noggins and studs for the walls the days we were framing and framed up two walls. The work placement was good and I learnt lots.”

Liam Fitzgerald - Year 11 “I learnt many skills throughout my work placement including knowing which shampoo and conditioner to use for each client and knowing what colours to do for each client. I also learnt a few different forms of customer service skills and just getting more experience with people. I don’t see myself being a hairdresser in the future just because I have grown up around hair dressing and I just find it a little boring but I’m always happy to help out and to get better at it. Advice I would give to anyone wanting to get into this as a career would be to make sure that you have good people skills and that you have the time to get to know your clients very well because you spend a long time together, also to be very passionate about it and to take the time to do all the training you can do some really nice stuff with hair. My favourite part about hairdressing was seeing their faces once Stacey was done with their hair. They were so in love with it and you can just show how much better they feel about themselves once their hair is done.”

“The manager told me that it was great having me there and it was very helpful for them and they said I can come back during the holidays just to do volunteer work. To anyone who’s wanting to get into this career, I would say, it can be fun when you start but as days go, it can get very stressful and you need to be very patient with the babies.”

Maree to MC Kerford Oration

Galen Science Teacher Maree Timms has been given the honour of MC at the 2021 Kerferd Oration, to be held on July 25th.

The Kerferd Oration, an annual event held in Beechworth aims to challenge thinking, foster discussion and promote active citizenship. Each year they invite a different orator and topic to the community, and with this aim to engage a relevant and active member of the community to MC the event.

With Maree’s work with the young people of the community, particularly around the VEX robotics competitions and her role with the Digital Technology Advisory Committee, the Kerferd Committee thought Maree would be a great choice as MC for the event. “I was extremely honoured and humbled, at being asked to be MC. A brainy bunch in Year 9 Neuroscience

Year 9 science students studying Neuroscience recently found a creative way to study parts of the brain by making papercut 'brain caps' in class! They also built neurons with plasticine and students found that taking a hands-on approach with some complicated content made learning easier, along with making it easier to remember too.

Dear Resident,

Safer Cycling Corridor - Phillipson Street, Wangaratta

We contacted you recently regarding a Regional Roads Victoria project to improve safety for cyclists on Phillipson Street, Wangaratta.

The project proposes the use of painted buffer zones, line marking, on-road symbols, bollards and rumble strips to help separate drivers and cyclists.

Intersections will also be highlighted with green pavement markings, with painted kerb outstands and bollards at each corner to improve safety for cyclists.

The safety improvement works on Phillipson Street planned for completion in June/July 2021 have now been rescheduled for delivery later in 2021 to allow for more suitable weather conditions and to secure a contractor.

We anticipate setting dates for the rescheduled works in the coming weeks and will be back in touch with further information when it is available.
