VET Hospitality Cater for Trades Day

Galen’s VET Hospitality team performed like a well-oiled machine last Thursday May 5, preparing 250 wraps for the North East Tracks LLEN Hands-On Trade Day held at Winton Raceway, with 1185 students from the region in attendance. Galen Hospitality students were accompanied at Galen by chefs Dameon Holmes – Chef at Wangaratta’s new Residential Rehab Centre and Megan Knapp from ‘The Kitchen Door Catering’ in Mansfield. The students were also capably led their teacher Kim McLeod and Hospitality Assistant Jill Wales, while Borinya students also gave a hand getting all of the healthy lunch packs put together and loaded into the van ready to be enjoyed by their hungry recipients. It was great to see all of the students working so well together, just as you’d expect to see professionals working in a commercial kitchen. Awesome work team!

Hands on Trade Expo

On May 5th about fifty Galen students attended the Hands on Trade Expo at Winton Raceway.

This event is designed to engage young people in North East of Victoria and for them to have a “hands on” try of various trade and industry activities and provide them information on trade and other career pathways on offer in the local area & beyond. This was a fantastic day and the students enjoyed chatting to local employers and having a go at the activities that were on offer.

The students said that the experience gave them a better idea of what they might like to do as a career.

Frozen - Junior Production

Congratulations to the students involved in our 2022 Junior Production, Frozen. It was great to see your musical skills in the orchestra and performance ability shine on stage. We’d also like to say a sincere thanks to the Year 10 directors who capably led the Year 7-9 students and used their past production experience to support the cast.

And of course, thanks to the backstage crew with their assistance to light the show bringing added drama, sets to turn our Auditorium into a winter scape and for the costumes too. Finally, thank you to the supportive parents and guardians who came along to see the show. Well done everyone!

I really enjoyed playing music in the Junior Production.

I met a lot of new people with different talents, and it was a great experience performing alongside them in the band. Ada – Year 8

The Galen frozen production was an experience I will never forget, having people so young and talented to put on an amazing show is the greatest thing I have ever seen, with the effort and mindset everybody had was awesome, good job everyone!

Celebrating Education Support Day On Monday 16th May, we celebrated Education Support Day. The collective skills and talents of our 20 strong team enrich the school community. Our team supports students in learning and our teachers in teaching, and our team attends to many other valuable roles. Galen Catholic College appreciates the Learning Support team's excellent work and is grateful for their ongoing support.

Year 12 Retreat

Fortunately we were able to run the 12 Retreat (8-11 May) after postponing it from February. A number of staff and students were not able to attend at the last minute due to COVID and other illnesses, however we had a number of staff volunteer to come on the Retreat at the very last minute which meant that it could run. Another interesting outcome of the change of dates and COVID was that we had the whole Year 12 cohort who were available on the one site at Howman’s Gap which we haven’t been able to do for some years.

As a school we feel that it is important that our Year 12 students have that time to retreat from normal life, spend time in reflection on who they are and what they are wanting to achieve in the coming year and also their pathway beyond secondary school. It is a time to reflect on faith, religious beliefs and spirituality to gain some clarity around those questions of who my main supporters are who nourish me and are there for me through thick and thin, where do I belong and where do I find a sense of meaning, purpose and joy?

It is an important time for the staff who attend and for those connections between students and staff that are so important, especially in Year 12.

A big thankyou to those who prepared and organised the retreat, the student leaders and the staff who attended at short notice. We will follow up on the experience in early Term 3 to revisit the retreat experience, student’s receive the letter they wrote to themself and have a chance to re-evaluate their goals.

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF) CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

Join us for an exclusive two-day Masterclass with internationally renowned artist John Pastoriza-Piñol. John works in the precise manner of botanical painting and will discuss his work and techniques, including the unique watercolor process that comprises close observation and drawing as a way of thinking through action.

About the Artist: John Pastoriza-Piñol completed his doctorate in Botany at University of Vigo, Galicia, in Spain and formally studied botanical illustration at the Botanical Art School of Melbourne. His work has been shown around the world and is held in numerous public and private collections worldwide, including Carnegie Mellon University; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London; and the State collection, Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. He teaches intermediate/advanced classes at the Geelong and Melbourne Botanic Gardens and has expanded his teaching circuit to include interstate and international master classes.

In this workshop, participants will explore abstraction and become aware of how particular art elements can be used to create a painting.

Anthea will guide you through the process of responding to a subject, whether it be a place, figure, or memory, and then begin the process of creating an abstract painting. During this workshop, you will be free to explore the qualities of gouache or acrylic paint and have the ability to tap into your imagination through expression.

Book in to enjoy abstract painting, expressionism and an afternoon wine!

About the Artist: Anthea Kemp completed her BFA in Fine Art (Painting) at RMIT, and later a Masters of Contemporary Art through the VCA, University of Melbourne.

She has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney, and has been a part of group exhibitions at various galleries in Melbourne as well as regional galleries in Victoria, including Benalla 2021 exhibition Northern Abstraction. She was a finalist in the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize in 2016.

Botanical Art, or Illustration, needs tight, contained colour matching and painting skills unlike the freedom of other watercolour subjects like seascapes, landscapes. In this workshop participants will explore the exciting and versatile colours achieved from just 3 primary colours and how to choose the right primaries to create a beautiful botanical.

Make up some colour charts, realise their value and learn brush skills in watercolour washes and dry brush work.

This workshop is for watercolour or botanical beginners and those with experience who wish to hone their skills.

ILLUSTRATION AND DRAWING Tutor: Mimi Leung Saturday 4 June 12–3PM Ages: 15+

Mimi Leung’s work has been featured internationally, and in many recognisable locations, such as Melbourne’s iconic Art Trams and even on your SLURPEE cup.

Based in Shepparton, Mimi’s work is diverse and includes drawing, illustration and collaborations in animation and clothing design.

In this workshop participants will be introduced to Mimi’s work and process, and explore drawing exercises using touch, memory, and movement. They will use these processes to develop a drawing piece from still life on canvas board with POSCA paint pens. Participants will be guided to discover and expand the colours and shapes visible in the still life display to create a unique painting.

This workshop is designed for artists to push their existing drawing and painting practices or for newcomers to discover their drawing and composition skills.
