National Track & Field Championships

Last week Callum Bott (Year 8) and Bella Pasquali (Year 10)competed in the National Australian Track & Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Callum’s impressive results included: U15 400m – Silver (51.98), U16 4 x 200m Bronze. Callum is currently ranked #2 in U15s men’s 400m and #5 in U15 men’s 200m.

Bella managed to snare Gold in the U17 400m, with a time of 55.47, narrowly closing in on Jana Pittman's 1999 time of 51.80. Bella is currently Ranked #1 in U17s women’s 400m and currently National Champion. Congratulations Bella and Callum!

Social Justice – Birthing Kits It was a pleasure for Social Justice students to assist preparing Birthing Kits for Zonta Wangaratta. The Zonta team led by Nicole McFarlane came to Galen to help the students put together much needed items required for safe births. Zonta in partnership with The Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) send these kits overseas to developing countries so hygienic birthing practices can happen in remote regions. To date, 2.4 million kits have been distributed to women in need. The impact of the kits cannot be underestimated and the rates of childbirth deaths has decreased significantly.

Math Homework Group For many weeks now Galen maths teachers have been running Math Homework Group. Available for senior students (years 10-12), homework group gives the senior students a space to catch on their maths homework, and get additional support if needed. This is available every Wednesday night 3:304:45pm. We invite more students to attend and participate.

Parliament Visit – Student Leaders On Thursday 31st May our College Captains Mietta Habets and Xavier McKenzie, with Vice Captains Molly Canning and Fergus McNamara travelled to Canberra to visit Parliament House and be hosted by Dr Helen Haines as guests.

On arrival we were guided around the Parliament House learning about the history and significant design of the building and Canberra. We were able to explore the gallery of portraits of past prime ministers and visit the senate. The place was abuzz as being budget week, as well as, the significant video address with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy which occurred later in the afternoon with all party members.

We joined Dr Haines for lunch and the students were able to discuss pressing matters for the youth of Indi and offer ideas about what they would like their local members to be focusing on. Later we attended question time, which was an insightful experience and created great discussion for the first half of the bus trip home.

A long, but very worthwhile day for our student leaders and one where it has opened up their scope of how our government works and how decisions made now impacts their future.

Easter Reflection For Christians, the death and resurrection of Jesus lie at the heart of what it means to be truly human.

Why? Because Christians believe that every barrier that might be placed between turning evil to good, between lies and truth, between slavery and freedom, and ultimately, between God and humanity, was broken down on that first Easter Sunday morning. For Christians, the Easter story represents hope of a new start, a new direction, a new future and the opportunity to be truly fulfilled humans.

You may share a belief in that Christian message of hope. You may follow another faith or believe that human resources alone are enough. Yet there is something for all of us in the Easter story.

Every one of us has experienced times when we felt so discouraged, so let down by other people that we felt there was no way out, just like those followers of Jesus on that first Good Friday.

It may be that at the moment we all feel a little bit like Jesus’ followers – the world seems uncertain and dangerous. We are asked to isolate ourselves and pull back from society, while the news constantly elevates our concerns, creating a picture of a world we can no longer really understand.

Easter, however, is a story of hope.

Easter tells us that, however bad our situation might appear to be, there is a way forward, even if we can’t see it right now. It’s a ‘never say die’ story, but it needs to be fleshed out for us as individuals. It needs to be tangible.

So, where might our hope come from?

King George Gardens - a HIVE of activity!

Rural City of Wangaratta is pleased to present Bees by Polyglot Theatre - a joyful, interactive work in which children are welcomed into a world of community, communication, wonder, and imagination.

Explore a buzzing, humming hive of activity, as three human-sized bees busy themselves in the creation of a community alongside children who transform into bees as they play. The bees are fascinating, strange and beautiful, traversing invisible pathways and mapping delicate patterns across the performance space.

Bees uses ritual, non-verbal communication and the secret world of bee movement to provide a range of access points for children to participate. The program is designed for children aged 4-11 years and their families and will take place in King George V Gardens on April 21, 22, 23 at 10am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3pm daily.

This is a free program and no bookings are required.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

CSEF ELIGIBILITY Below are the criteria used to determine a student’s eligibility for the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF).

Criteria 1 – General eligibility To be eligible for the fund, a parent or carer of a student attending a registered Government or non-government Victorian primary or secondary school must: • on the first day of Term one • a) b)

be a holder of one or more of the eligible financially-means tested cards OR be a temporary foster parent, and; submit an application to the school by the due date.

Albury Wodonga, Parent/Carer session: communicating with my young person headspace National are hosting an education session for parents and carers of young people to support their mental health, for the region of Albury Wodonga.

Information presented will: • Increase your knowledge and understanding of the mental health challenges facing young people today.

• Improve awareness of your young person's emotions, thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

• Introduce how you can start a conversation with your young person and enhance connections.

• Introduce you to some of the skills and strategies to encourage and support help-seeking.
