From the Executive Director Catholic Education Sandhurst I write to inform you that Mr Bernard Neal, Principal of Galen Catholic College, has informed me of his decision to retire at the end of the current school year.

A process will commence in the near future to appoint a new Principal for the College. This process is overseen by Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd. The Galen Catholic College community will be kept informed as this important process unfolds.

I know you will join with me in wishing Bernard every success and much happiness as he works towards his final months at your College. Bernard Neal has been a significant contributor to Catholic education in Wangaratta and further afield. He has been Principal of the College for twelve years. Prior to this, he was Principal of Monivae College in Hamilton for ten years and has taught and led in a range of schools in each of the four Victorian diocese. He is widely respected throughout Catholic education across Victoria for his vision and wisdom and is seen as the finest of role models for aspiring leaders.

Bernard’s career has been a remarkable one, underpinned by his overt love of ensuring his students receive the very best in educational opportunities, knowing these contribute deeply to the student’s journey through life. For him, the student has always been at the heart of every initiative.

Bernard’s commitment to your College is to be commended.

During his period of leadership, Galen Catholic College has grown and is widely regarded as an outstanding environment in which the young may flourish. The quality of education has always been central in Bernard’s work and he has devoted his time and expertise to ensuring a robust curriculum is offered in state-of-the-art settings.

Deck'd Design Competition

Congratulations to Galen Year 8 Visual Communication Design students Taite Sims, Declan OSullivan and Josephine Somerville who won the runners up ‘Bullseye prize’ as part of the Deck’d Skateboard Design Competition, run by the Wodonga Local Drug Action Program and Wodonga Council through funding from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. The year 8s each designed skateboard deck graphics in response to a brief requiring them to address issues around drug use. “We want you to flip drugs on their head and think about the things in life that would help you or a friend to avoid developing any problems with drugs.” Well done to the trio on creating positive designs that stood out to the judges! http://deckd.com.au/contest

Debutante Ball

The Galen College Debutante Balls held on Saturday March 27th saw the Debutantes and their Partners presented to Mr Bernard Neal, School Principal and his wife Fiona. Mr. Patrick Arcuri, Deputy Principal at Galen once again proved himself to be a dab hand at the Job of M.C. for the evening.

A fabulous night was had by all in the Grand surroundings of St.Patrick's Hall, the Debutantes, Partners, family and friends were immersed in the vibrant colour and movement of a street Fiesta in Mexico. The ladies and gents of this Deb set

showed off their dancing prowess performing the Margharita March, Samba and Balmoral Blue, they were then joined on the dance floor for a showy display of the Evening Three Step by their Parent/special person. Later in the evening the Debs and their Partners donned Mexican painted masks, flowers and sombreros to bust out the Nutbush to raucous loud encouragement from their families and guests who then joined them on the dancefloor to finish the dance.

Viva la Mexico! On Saturday 20th March 2021, Participants of the Galen Debutante Ball and their guests were transported to Mexico for a night of dance, laughter and fun. They have been waiting for this night for over twelve months and made up for it in true Mexican fiesta style. Our Debutantes and their Partners were presented to Ms. Lauren Sykes and Mr. Dan

Armitage Leading Teachers from Galen College, with Deputy Principal Mr. Pat Arcuri, once again making an excellent M.C. for the evening. Such a super patient dedicated group warranted a visit from a very special V.I.P, Sandhurst Diocese Bishop Shane Mackinlay. Bishop Shane stopped in for a chat and a photo with the group.

CERTIFICATE II in AGRICULTURE

Do you enjoy cooking and preparing food for customers?

This course will give you the skills to work in professional kitchen environments such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes, and coffee shops; and in institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, and schools, preparing a range of food and menu items.

Your skillset will include: • Preparation and presentation of simple dishes • Preparing appetisers and salads • Pasta and gnocchi preparation • Preparing soups and sauces You'll also learn important skills in food hygiene, keeping kitchen premises and equipment clean, and working in a team environment.

This course can be used as a pathway for entry into the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (chefs apprenticeship)and is a terrific addition to your resume for any future hospitality work.

Do you like the idea of working outdoors, doing practical, hands-on tasks according to the season?

The agriculture industry will have a huge impact on the future of food security. There are a large variety of careers and employment opportunities available through studying agriculture and there is a strong demand for skilled workers, providing good pay and flexible hours. Practical indoor and outdoor work is available with opportunities to work anywhere in the world.

This course will provide the key skills you require in order to work on a farm with subjects that could include: • Participate in work health and safety processes • Work effectively in the industry • Participate in workplace communications • Monitor water supplies • Assist with soil or growing media sampling and testing • Operate quad bikes • Install, maintain and repair farm fencing • First Aid

The wonders of static electricity in Yr 9 Science

Year 9 science student, Ryley Dalton got to be Giles’ (our fabulous Lab Tech), assistant whilst doing a demo using the Van der Graaf Generator, for the class. It was a hair raising experience for Ryley, as well as a bit of fun when he got to “fly” tin foil discs and bend water!

Galen sprinters put on the pace Congratulations to Callum Bott (Year 7) and Bella Pasquali (Year 9) who recently had an exciting day out at the National Athletic Championships in Sydney. Callum competed in the U14 400m achieving a PB time of 54.77seconds, while Bella competed in the U16 400m with a time of 57.31 seconds. Well done to you both!
