Student Leadership Badge Presentation On Tuesday 15th March, the Year 12 student leaders joined the College staff leaders in a lunchtime ceremony in the Galen Chapel to acknowledge their contribution to student leadership and presented them with their badges for 2022. Darta addressed the group in a final blessing and asked the student group to step forward and be the model to follow, as well as, to serve others. In extended homeroom on Wednesday 16th March, the House leaders and Year 12 House Captains presented their House teams their student leadership badges for 2022.

Swimming Carnival 2022 Our first major sports event for 2022 was held on Friday 4th March and we were able to celebrate it as a Whole school at WSAC, Barr Reserve. Something that we have missed over the past 2 years. Leading up to this day, rain was pending but the gods were looking down on us and it resulted in a cracking day.

It started with alot of colour, the kids embraced the chance to dress up not only in their house colour but some even wore some costumes.

Year 12 sticking with tradition, collaborated together resulting in a lot of cheerleaders both, boys and girls. Jene made an appearance alongside Mike Wazowski.

There were a lot of non water activities for the day, all these activities gave the students a chance to earn points for their house. Tug of war was popular as was soccer. DJ H had the music pumping which created a great atmosphere amongst the kids in and out of the pool.

In the water, the swimmers had a great day. To see a lot of activity and lots of PB’s being broken. The last event of the day was the Super Swim. These were the 8 fastest swimmers for the day across the range of age groups.

Tayah Martens took out first position with a 30.06secs swim closely followed by Lucy Cole 30.68sec and Sofia Gallo in third 31.48sec. Declan O’Sullivan was too fast in the water today with a fantastic swim, 28.96sec which placed him first followed by Sam Holmes 31.44 and in third, Harry Nolan with 31.86secs.

The results for the day in the water followed by well deserving swimmers.

This was my first swim carnival as Sports Coordinator and I personally would like to thank everyone for the fun filled day. The success from today comes from the Staff and students who volunteered to supervise/timekeep/PA announcers and marshall etc. Putting together an event as large as this without the support of you all would be impossible and I thank you all.

Unit 3 VCD draw on riverside inspiration

Unit 3 Visual Communication Design students spent some time drawing at Riverside Square in town last Tuesday. With ideal weather, students completed a number of short observational drawing tasks as an introduction to environmental design. From drawings they completed, these will then lead into the development of their creative work back in the classroom.

Caritas Project Compassion

We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about Anatercia, a 12-year-old girl living in a small village in southern Mozambique.

She began to take on more and more adult responsibilities as her mother has chronic health issues. She did most of the household chores and had to travel up to five hours every day to collect clean water. Water scarcity also meant that harvests were poor and there was never enough to eat.

With your support, Caritas Australia’s local partner, Caritas Regional Chokwe, was able to help Anatercia’s family to irrigate their farm to improve their food security. They also improved water access for households in the village, delivered sustainable farming training, and provided Anatercia with essential school supplies. Anatercia’s health, education and quality of life have improved, along with the outlook of her whole community for all future generations.

Ethical fundraising for Athletics Day 2022

This year, the Social Justice team at Galen have collectively decided to move away from utilising easter eggs for this year's Athletics Day fundraising event. Instead, Zooper Doopers will be distributed around the school and all profits will be donated to Caritas Australia as a part of this year's project compassion. The reason we have decided not to include easter eggs is because of the major issues in regards to fair trade and sustainable chocolate. Unfortunately, most of the sourced cocoa that is used to produce chocolate involves child labour, unfair wages and working conditions. This causes extreme poverty for cocoa farmers, leading them to face high production costs whilst lacking access to financial services. With low incomes and weak economic resilience, cocoa farmers struggle to meet basic human needs. As well as the social issues that unsustainable chocolate has globally, it also contributes to climate change and deforestation. These effects and outcomes of the cocoa farming industries around the world are not supported by Social Justice and we are passionate about eliminating these types of issues rather than promoting them. We hope to see fair trade chocolate becoming more accessible and popular within our community over the next few years, and hopefully the use of easter eggs in future fundraisers!

Rich Learning Mathematics Students with Jonas Anderberg recently got the opportunity to do a problem solving task. It may look like they are doing graffiti on a school table but they are using school whiteboard tables to actively collaborate. Working in teams makes the task achievable and engages students to communicate thoughts effectively.

What are rich learning tasks? Rich tasks are accessible to all students, have multiple entry and exit points, and focus on problem solving strategies, mathematical discussion, and critical thinking. At Galen, rich lessons typically take place at least twice a term. During rich lessons students work collaboratively, while teachers lead and direct the lesson.

How about you try the following mini rich task at home. It only takes 3 minutes and is a great little activity to do with the family.

High Country MTB Schools Competition On Friday 11th March the High Country MTB Schools Competition was held at Mount Buller.

It was a magical day on top of the mountain.

Hugh Canning represented Galen in the Intermediate Year 9 - 10 age section competition.

The track was in great condition with over 18 riders from different schools in Victoria pushing themselves to their limits. Hugh had a fantastic ride bringing home an amazing 1st place result with a time of 8:23:9. 2nd and 3rd places followed closely behind with times of 8:47:4 and 8:58:4. Congratulations Hugh on a well-deserved win.

Year 8 Medieval Day As part of the Year 8 Humanities topic ‘Medieval Europe’, students were given the opportunity to participate in an incursion this week. The company Medieval Education came to Galen to deliver a program that aims to make history come alive. Students experienced three out of four rotating activities: Knights Tournament, Fashion & Dress, Weaponry and Crime & Punishment. Students got to handle replica weapons, train as knights, dress in costume, play games and be punished using Medieval instruments. It was a day of practical learning that hopefully brought their study of the time period into greater clarity.

Excellence in the Arts RAW 2022 Albury Museum selected two Galen students who finished Studio Arts in 2021, Gemma Cassagranda and Sarah Simonetti.

Sarah’s artwork is a large 9 panel digital print showing images of people who have influenced her in her life. The images are layered with different exposures and colours, like memories they are fractured through spectrum of colours and different aspects are highlighted. Gemma’s artwork is digital video inspired by nature, she was given a microscope that had her investigate the microscopic world, its colours textures and shapes. Gemma re-animated these images into a digital video that moved in an organic motion and enhanced the colours to spectrums seen from the perspective of bugs. RAW 2022 is open at MAMMA in Albury until April 17.

ZONTA Women’s Breakfast On Thursday March 10th, nine Year 11 students attended the annual ZONTA Women’s breakfast held at the Gateway Quality Hotel. They were treated to addresses from 3 inspiring women in various occupations and they were able to speak about their journey.

With local women in a variety of occupations at hand to discuss their experience and wisdom about their careers and lives in specific professions, it was a very beneficial experience for our students.

ZONTA offer a scholarship program that promotes young women in public affairs. If students are active/ interested in volunteerism, experience in leadership (School, community or local government) and general interest in ZONTA’s aims and values they are eligible to apply. Also announced during the morning’s events, ZONTA will be launching a Men’s breakfast in October for male Year 10 students which will be advertised in time to allow our male cohort to have an opportunity to network with local business people.

Hume Swim Championships On Monday 15th March five of our students set off to compete in individual and relay swims.

Students representing Galen were: Declan O’Sullivan, Lucy Cole, Tayah Martens, Ruby Snowdon, Sofia Gallo and Ella Nelson.

Swimmers hit the water in great form with Tayah Martens blitzing 3 individual events: 15Y Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly. Bringing home two first place ribbons for the 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke and a second in Butterfly. Tayah is now representing Galen at State next term.

Declan had a tough race today but swam the 16Y 50m Butterfly. This age group is one of the strongest groups by far in the pool. Swimming a time of 37:82 sec Declan out did himself and represented Galen proudly.

Lucy had a great day in the pool. Swimming in 4 individual events for the day and with close times again. With a nail biting finish in the Breaststroke, coming down to the final seconds, touching the wall gracefully to claim 3rd place. Watching Lucy in the water is always magical, her style and stroke never ceases to amaze.

Ruby graced the pool in the 50m Freestyle, with her finishing in 4th position, mere seconds behind 1st, second and third.

We had the girls represent Galen in two relays on the day, 4x50m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley.

The relay teams consisted of Tayah Martens, Lucy Cole, Sofia Gallo, Ruby Snowdon and Ella Nelson.

We placed second in the 4x50m medley by only 2secs. Which is just a kick or stroke away from the other team. Fantastic effort girls.

But for the first time in many years we are taking a team to STATE!!! The girls swam an amazing race with Lucy diving into the pool first. Her power pushed through and we were able to lead. Next up was Ruby, keeping the pace that was set by Lucy but the other teams had started to make the move when Sofia, swimming the third leg, managed to push to the lead again which gave Tayah the extra length needed to come home with the win. It was a super fast race with a great time of 2:10.67.

It was a great day to be in the water!

Girls Super 8 cricket tournaments On Friday 18th March, Brian Carr, Ren White, Grace Kerwin and Sienna Sims took 3 girls cricket teams to Wodonga’s Willow Park.

The competition was strong and our teams performed well with efficient bowling and hard hitting with the bat.

Our Year 9/10 lead by Brian Carr had a few narrow losses over 4 games.

Great performances by Angelina Bigger, Taite Sims and Abbey Simpson White shows us next year’s Senior girls team will be hard to beat.

The Year 8 team led by Sienna Sims went undefeated in their pool and finished with highest amount of runs to get them automatically through to final against CCW. They batted well in the final, however CCW’s fielding meant wickets were the difference.

Strong batting and bowling on the day came from Poppy O’Keefe, Maddie White and Rosie Welch.

Our Year 7 girls lead by Grace Kerwin, were very competitive and finished 2nd to CCW after pool games. Strong batting and bowling on the day came from Lily Lyster, Charley Miller and Sienna Csaszar.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL THURSDAY MARCH 24

WEAR YOUR HOUSE COLOURS FOR A DAY OF FUN!

Enrolments at Galen Galen Catholic College is part of Catholic Education Sandhurst Limited (CES Ltd). From 2022, all primary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Sandhurst follow the same enrolment policy, priority criteria and procedures – underpinned by an Enrolment Framework.

Enrolment applications will be available online at: https://wp.me/P3fc49-bx and the new process will require the family to complete information in the following stages:

Step 1

Online Enrolment Application submitted by the parent/guardian containing relevant information to assist the school to make a provisional enrolment offer. A nonrefundable application fee of $50 is required at this stage.

Step 2

Galen Catholic College will make a provisional enrolment offer after considering the school’s enrolment capacity. The parent/guardian will be asked to accept the provisional offer and to complete the Enrolment Offer form with a request for additional information.

If demand for enrolment is higher than that the number of places available, the parent/guardian will be advised that the enrolment application will be placed on a wait list & the following criteria will be applied: Preference in enrolment will be given to baptised Catholics.

Siblings of current students will normally be accepted for enrolment.

Students who have attended Catholic primary/secondary schools will normally be accepted for enrolment.

Non – Catholic students from government schools are interviewed and normally accepted, depending on numbers.

The Principal has the ultimate responsibility and discretion in accepting enrolments.

Step 3

Following the submission of the Enrolment Offer form the family will be invited to attend an interview, after which the Principal will make a final enrolment decision. If successful, the parent/guardian will receive an Enrolment Agreement for completion. As this stage a $200 Enrolment Acceptance Fee will be required (deductible from the first term’s school fees).

Step 4

The enrolment of a student will be finalised and written confirmation provided once a completed and signed Enrolment Agreement and acceptance fee has been received by the school.

WHERE Benalla Art Gallery: Introduction to Adrienne Doig’s It’s All About Me! exhibition in the Bennett Gallery; Workshop in the Pat Gardner Studio AGES 13 to 25 years COST Free MATERIALS Supplied, however participants are encouraged to bring unfinished projects, old or recycled items they would like to work with

Drawing on aspects of contemporary culture, selfies, social media and the concept that the personal is political, the workshop will encourage participants to create a self-portrait that explores everyday experiences in the context of wider issues.

Using art as a forum to explore difficult issues, and imagination as a self-help tool, the workshop will guide participants to create an artwork that focuses on their life experiences.

We will use found materials, and collage, exploring reusing and recycling to further personalise our art.

Participants are welcome to bring unfinished projects, old or recycled items to work on (e.g. old clothes, scrap fabric and recycled items).

The workshop will be held on the final day of Adrienne Doig’s incredible exhibition at Benalla Art Gallery, It’s All About Me! Adrienne Doig will also present an Artist Talk at Benalla Art Gallery, on the morning following this workshop, 10AM Monday 4 April.
