Once a term I will provide an extended address in the newsletter, and on which I am very happy to receive feedback.

I would like to share with you some key points from my Principal’s address to the Galen Catholic College community at the Opening Liturgy on Wednesday morning.

Jesus gave us a very powerful commandment, that in today’s world holds more importance than ever before, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

I am often drawn to this when I consider how do I lead this community. Jesus clearly set us an example where he happily worked and supported those on the margins. Jesus sets a standard which provides us with an example of how to interact with others inside and outside of the Galen Catholic College community.

Last Friday, at our swimming sports, I was challenged by local youths as they attempted to enter the back gate of the swimming sports. The youths argued with me as I attempted to assist them to leave the Aquatic Centre.

It was at this moment that a group of male students from Galen Catholic College decided that they would stand next to me and simply point to the back gate. This simple, non-confrontational gesture, was enough to convince the youths to leave. - Continued following page

The Galen Catholic College students saw a ‘standard that they could not accept’ and supported me.

Simply an outstanding gesture, which I will never forget.

A number of staff and students have already heard me say this year, “The standard you walk past, is the standard you accept.”

At Galen Catholic College we are an inclusive Catholic community. We welcome all regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identification or the gifts and talents each member of our community has.

As we move around our community, if we see or hear behaviour that that does not reflect our inclusive catholic community, a community that lives out Jesus’ commandment of, ‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Then you need to act.

Plans are well underway for the inaugural Family Discovery Evening on Wednesday 9th March. At the time of writing, we have over 90 families registered to attend and we are very much looking forward to welcoming them into our school so that they may get an understanding of the breadth of pathways, curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities Galen Catholic College offers. Staff and Leadership Team members will be available to answer any questions parents or students may have about life at Galen. The evening runs from 5.30pm – 7.00pm.

I’d like to finish by commending the staff and students on an excellent Swimming Carnival last Friday.

It is important to note that this is the first whole school sporting event to be held in two years and the day was embraced by staff and students alike. Particular thanks must go to Carmel Annett and her team for the great organisation of such a large event. My appreciation goes to the staff undertaking the many and varied duties to ensure the day runs smoothly and particular thanks to all the students who participated in events and contributed so positively to the spirit of the day.

I would like to thank everyone at Galen Catholic College for the outstanding welcome; I feel privileged to be a member of this community.

Caritas Project Compassion 2022 ‘For All Future Generations’ Last week the season of Lent began with Ash Wednesday, which also marked the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allows Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues.

We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each homeroom will receive a Project Compassion box for their donations.

Anatercia is a 12-year-old girl living in a small village in southern Mozambique. After her father passed away and her mother became incapacitated due to chronic health issues, life became a daily struggle.

She moved in with her elderly grandparents, and began to take on more and more adult responsibilities.

She did most of the household chores and had to travel for hours every day to collect clean water. Water scarcity also meant that harvests were poor and there was never enough to eat.

With your support, Caritas Australia’s local partner, Caritas Regional Chokwe was able to help Anatercia’s family to irrigate their farm to improve their food security, while also improving water access for households in the village. Her grandmother participated in sustainable farming training, while Anatercia received essential school supplies and access to psychosocial supports through a local health committee.

Now, Anatercia can easily access clean drinking water, community members are able to grow healthy crops all year round, and there is enough nutritious food to eat. Anatercia feels better supported by her community, has more time to study and do her homework, and hopes to fulfil her dream of becoming a nurse.

ZART ART National Teacher–Artist Prize 2022 Finalists Announced Congratulations to Galen VCD teacher Mal Webster on being selected as one of 50 Finalists from around Australia in the ZART ART National Teacher – Artist Prize 2022. Selected from a judging panel including: Maree Clarke – Artist, Vernon Ah Kee – Artist, Roxanne Lillis – Inaugural NTAP Winner and Margaret Baguley – President Art Education Australia, Mal’s work will be exhibited in Melbourne at The Lennox, Richmond from April 2 – 16.

View the Finalists at: https://zart.us.launchpad6.com/ntap22 From the 50 National Finalists there are a number of awards including The National Teacher-Artist Prize Winner ($10,000 awarded to the artist plus $10,000 of art materials from Zart for the artists school), Runner Up ($2,500 in art materials from Zart), Highly Commended State-Based Prizes ($2,500 in art materials from Zart).

Mal’s entry comprised of three detailed pencil drawings of gumleaves. In his artist statement he commented, “When students leave for each term break I always make a point of encouraging them to continue drawing from observation to keep their mind active and skills fresh. At the beginning of a recent term break I also did this and collected a selection of gumleaves to sketch. I created this detailed triptych in coloured pencil, capturing change and impermanence through their minute details and intricate layers of colour.”

Voting is still open for The People’s Choice Prize, which closes on 16th April.

Welcome back Sonia!

We are very happy to welcome back Sonia Grassi to Galen Catholic College as an Italian Language Assistant. Sonia comes from Rezzato (Brescia), but has been living in the area for the past 4 years. We are very fortunate to have her with us for another year! Sonia will be working with the Italian teachers to support the teaching of the Italian language across all year levels. BENTORNATA SONIA! Commencement Liturgy 2022 - WED 9TH MARCH Due to the current COVID 19 schools Operational Guide we could not gather as whole school community for Mass with Bishop Shane to formally mark the commencement of 2022.

Mountain Bike Championship success Congratulations to Levi Billings who represented Galen in the Victorian Schools MTB Race at Falls Creek on Friday 25 February and came 1st.

"I represented Galen at Falls Creek in the Victorian Interschools Mountain Bike Championship. I competed in the year 7/8 category and came first by 28 seconds out of 46 riders. It was raining while I raced, which I was happy about because I didn’t get too hot. The course included Lakeview track and a little bit of Turbine which included two gravel road climbs, a single track climb, then a downhill with a nice flow to it at the end. The best section for me was the gravel road climb because I’m a strong climber and was able to beat everyone to the start of the single track. The course was 4 laps and approximately 7.5 kilometres long. I did an extra lap because the race didn’t feel long enough after winning the race. I won a medal and a Dharco jersey. I’m hoping that others from Galen will join me next year."

Seeds of Change savour bush snacks Integrated Studies 'Seeds of Change' classes 9.3 & 9.4 were introduced to some indigenous bush foods, which involved some taste testing. The first thing we tasted was crickets which you would think are gross, but they really just taste like burnt salty popcorn. The next thing we tasted was a Mealworm. It had this horrible dusty wet earth taste to it. After that, we ate Quandongs they had an overripe sour, taste to them and an acid after taste.

We did more taste testing on other types of foods but overall it was an amazing experience. It was good to taste food outside of our comfort zones that our taste buds had never had before. If people can sit there and eat chips why can’t they sit there and eat crickets or a type of food you don’t hear of every day.

Aboriginals use to survive on things like mealworms or finger lime so introducing them into our diets might not be such a bad thing when they have amazing health benefits.

One of our students really enjoyed eating the crickets as you can see in the photo.

Victorian State Wakeboard Championships success Congratulations to Koen Naughtin (Year 11) who competed in the Victorian State Wakeboard Championships over the weekend in the heavily contested Junior men’s division (Under 19). He was lucky enough to come away with 2nd place after lots of work and many hard falls over the season. Nice work Koen!

Fergus to feature in VCE Season of Excellence On Monday March 28th, current year 12 Student Fergus McNamara will be performing at the Top Class Theatre Studies Concert as part of the VCE Season of Excellence. He will be performing at the Melbourne Arts Centre with 9 other chosen Victorian students.

After receiving an A+ for his Theatre Studies Monologue Exam (Unit 3/ 4 which Fergus completed as a Year 11 student) he was asked to audition for the Top Class Concerts in which he was successful. This is an amazing achievement, reflecting Fergus’ exceptional performance skills and dedication to his studies.

International Women’s Day Dear Galen Catholic College Community, Yesterday, March 8th 2022, we celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD), a day marked on our calendar each year, where people from all over the globe come together to commemorate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. IWD has been celebrated since 1911 – that’s 111 years!

IWD is an important day to celebrate no matter where you are, as it spreads the message of gender equality- ‘Women’s rights, are human rights’, a world where there is no gap between the male and female gender, a world where women are celebrated, listened to and treated as an equal member of their community.

The 2022 IWD theme is #BreakTheBias. The theme #BreakTheBias attempts to break down the bias, stereotypes and discrimination towards women. Together, we pave a path towards a world where difference is valued and communities are diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Grace races at historic cycling event Congratulations to Grace Jenkins (Year 10) on her recent cycling success.

Over the weekend she competed in the Bell Helmets Track Open event on the 5th March, achieving 2nd place in B grade U17 10 lap scratch race/heart starter, and came 4th in the U17 women's point race.

On Sunday, she also rode in the prestigious Quest Ivanhoe 124th Austral Wheel Race at the Darebin International Velodrome. In this event Grace raced a U17 women's 15 lap scratch race playing 6th, a 10 lap U17 women's progressive points race placing 6th, a 20 lap Motor pace race placing 6th and rode in the Junior Women's Austral Wheelrace, 1500m (6 laps) placing 8th.

While only a relative newcomer to the sport, cycling for a year and a half, Grace had mixed emotions about taking her place in the events. “I’m fairly new to cycling, so it was definitely nerve wracking to be riding the Austral Wheel Race”.

“In both Bell Helmets and Austral, I got the chance to meet and connect with a few Olympians and watch them race, which was absolutely unreal.”

“I've had some injuries and setbacks this season, so I'm grateful to get in there and be riding.”

Grace also achieved at the end of February in the State Championships at Darebin, with notable achievements including beating her individual pursuit PB, getting 3:00 (3 minutes), placing 8th in the Individual Pursuit and placing 6th in the JW17 point race.

“I'm planning to ride a few more upcoming group races and carnivals, such as the Madison carnivals in Bendigo.” We wish Grace all the best!

VET Hospitality The first year Hospitality class are looking professional in their new Chef’s uniforms.

The students will undertake a 2 year course in the Galen industry kitchen and be awarded a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations upon completion.

Enrolments at Galen Galen Catholic College is part of Catholic Education Sandhurst Limited (CES Ltd). From 2022, all primary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Sandhurst follow the same enrolment policy, priority criteria and procedures – underpinned by an Enrolment Framework.

Enrolment applications will be available online at: https://wp.me/P3fc49-bx and the new process will require the family to complete information in the following stages:

Step 1

Online Enrolment Application submitted by the parent/guardian containing relevant information to assist the school to make a provisional enrolment offer. A nonrefundable application fee of $50 is required at this stage.

Step 2

Galen Catholic College will make a provisional enrolment offer after considering the school’s enrolment capacity. The parent/guardian will be asked to accept the provisional offer and to complete the Enrolment Offer form with a request for additional information.

If demand for enrolment is higher than that the number of places available, the parent/guardian will be advised that the enrolment application will be placed on a wait list & the following criteria will be applied: Preference in enrolment will be given to baptised Catholics.

Siblings of current students will normally be accepted for enrolment.

Students who have attended Catholic primary/secondary schools will normally be accepted for enrolment.

Non – Catholic students from government schools are interviewed and normally accepted, depending on numbers.

The Principal has the ultimate responsibility and discretion in accepting enrolments.

Step 3

Following the submission of the Enrolment Offer form the family will be invited to attend an interview, after which the Principal will make a final enrolment decision. If successful, the parent/guardian will receive an Enrolment Agreement for completion. As this stage a $200 Enrolment Acceptance Fee will be required (deductible from the first term’s school fees).

Step 4

The enrolment of a student will be finalised and written confirmation provided once a completed and signed Enrolment Agreement and acceptance fee has been received by the school.

Collection Notice for parents/guardians 2022 Student Residential Address and Other Information The Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (the department) would like to notify you that a request has been made for your child’s school to provide residential address and other information as required under the Australian Education Regulation 2013.

The school is required to provide the department with the following information about each student at the school: • • • •

Names and residential addresses of student’s parent(s) and/or guardian(s) Student residential address (excluding student names) Whether the student is a primary or secondary student (education level) Whether the student is boarding or a day student (boarding status).

The school collects the above information by generating a unique and unidentifiable – student reference number (SRN) for each student record. The SRN is also only used by the school for this collection. It is not allowed to be used for any other purpose. The number only indicates to the department that each record provided is for one student.

Purpose of the collection The Student Residential Address and Other Information Collection (the Collection) informs Australian Government school education policy and helps ensure funding for non-government schools is based on need basis.

The information collected will be used to inform school funding calculations. It is combined with data held by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to calculate a non-government school community’s anticipated capacity to contribute to the costs of schooling.

From 2020, a new measure of capacity to contribute, the Direct Measure of Income (DMI), was introduced.

The DMI is based on the median income of parents or guardians of students at a non-government school using data collected through the Collection. More information about the DMI can be found on the Quality Schools Package page on the departmental website.

Use and disclosure of personal information Your personal information is protected by law under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act). Personal information is information or an opinion about an identifiable individual. Personal information includes an individual’s name and contact details.

Any use or disclosure of your personal information must occur in accordance with Privacy Act and the Australian Education Act 2013 and Australian Education Regulation 2013.

Each team member entered on team registration will receive an email notification from Netball Connect to register and pay the required fees.

Please forward completed Team Registration form of players intending to play with your team by 5 April 2022 to WNA Committee so we can check that your players have registered to the correct team.

Team Coach must also register under Team name for communication purposes.

Netball Victoria Regulations require coaches, team managers, and umpires over 18 years of age to maintain a valid Working with Children Check and must provide evidence to WNA before the first round.

Players, coaches and umpires register to digital team registration

To be eligible to play Junior Competition players must be between the ages of 11 and 17 as at the 31st December in the current year.

Boys must be less than 13 years of age as at the first day of the season to be eligible to play in this competition.

NetSetGo players cannot play in this competition.

Advise all intending players of the team name to ensure they register to the correct team Players must register online for their Netball Victoria and Wangaratta Netball Association registration via the link on the Wangaratta Netball Association website/competitions/Registrations OR Netball Connect App OR https://vic.netball.com.au/players Parents to create their own Netball Connect login then add child under their profile (+new participant registration).

Players to complete their online registration a fortnight prior to the competition commencing.

Umpires • Each team must supply at least one (1) to a maximum of three (3) umpires.

• Teams are responsible for sourcing team umpire.

• Teams who are likely to play in either Premier A and B and Section 1 must provide an umpire for their time slot who is competent/experienced, and MUST be a non-Junior Competition player or coach.

• Premier A and B and Section 1 teams also need to be aware that their umpires times may change as teams may be regraded at any time during the season.

Team umpire for Sections 2, 3, and 4 must be available to umpire each week either the match before or after they play/coach.

Any team who does not supply an umpire shall automatically forfeit that game.

Umpires must check-in 5 to 10 minutes prior to their game.

Umpires are required to attend umpire training to learn or continue with their umpire training.
