Galen Celebrates Opening Mass

The Galen Catholic College community was excited to celebrate Opening Mass last Wednesday 3rd March, with celebrants Bishop Shane McKinlay and Fr Nathan Vellar. In stark contrast to last year, this was the first ‘whole school’ event since the beginning of 2020. Parents, guardians and carers were able to attend through live streaming online. The 2021 college theme, ‘Faith in our Future’ was also launched and

in light of our experiences over the last twelve months, it’s a very fitting one. Developed by year 12 students at their recent retreats to Howman’s Gap and Lake Hume, ‘Faith in Our Future’ relates to the 200-year anniversary of Catholic Education in Australia. At the conclusion of Mass, Brigid House was very proud to be crowned winners after the recent college Swimming Carnival!

Opening Mass

Galen Catholic College’s opening school mass saw us welcome our wonderful Bishop, Shane, as well as our new college chaplain, Fr Nathan, to our college on a beautiful autumn day to celebrate the eucharist and unite as one faith community. This mass was rich with hymns, sung not only in English, but Sotho and Zulu as well! The ceremony was embedded with prayers and scriptures that all tied into our school theme for 2021, ‘Faith in Our Future’. Bishop Shane offered us some well-considered and poignant insights into

the gospel passage of the mass, the well-known ‘Road to Emmaus’, which was invaluable for us as a student body, all on our own journeys with Jesus by our side. An excellent start to the year and we’re very grateful that we could celebrate with our Bishop!

Please be aware that there has been a head lice case in both the Year 8 and Year 12 area.

Can you please check that your child does not have any eggs or live lice and treat if necessary.

ECSI Survey Currently we are in the process of conducting a school wide survey regarding the school community’s Catholic Identity and culture.

It is an important survey for the school as it provides data that indicates important areas for us to work on for improvement in the future.

There are two letters attached. The first is information regarding your child’s survey and the second is information for parents to complete the parent survey. The login information is in the survey instruction attachment.

Social Justice Aths Day Fundraisers Social Justice Coin Line

The Social Justice students are throwing out a challenge to all houses. This Ath’s Carnival Thursday 18th March we are challenging houses to make the longest coin line. The winner will receive 5 points towards their house total for the day. All of the money collected will be donated to Project Compassion. Let’s see which House can make the longest line and let’s start collecting our spare change.

Treating and controlling headlice

While children are at school many families will have contact with head lice. The information contained here will help you treat and control head lice.

Catching head lice Head lice have been around for many thousands of years.

Anyone can get head lice.

Head lice are small, wingless, blood sucking insects.

Their colour varies from whitish-brown to reddish-brown.

Head lice only survive on humans. If isolated from the head they die very quickly (usually within 24 hours).

People get head lice from direct hair to hair contact with another person who has head lice. This can happen when people play, cuddle or work closely together.

Head lice do not have wings or jumping legs so they cannot fly or jump from head to head. They can only crawl.

If lice or eggs are found, the hair should be treated.

If the person has been treated recently and you only find empty hatched eggs, you may not have to treat, as the empty eggs could be from a previous episode.

Treating head lice Treating head lice involves removing lice and eggs from the hair. There are two ways you can do this: 1. Buying and using a head lice lotion or shampoo, following the instructions on the product 2. Using the conditioner and comb method (described under ‘finding head lice’) every second day until there have been no live lice found for ten days.

If you choose to use a head lice product always read and follow the instructions provided with the product carefully.

The following points may also be helpful: • Head lice products must be applied to all parts of the hair and scalp.

Finding head lice Many lice do not cause an itch, so you have to look carefully to find them.

Head lice are found on the hair itself and move to the scalp to feed. They have six legs which end in a claw and they rarely fall from the head. Louse eggs (also called nits) are laid within 1.5 cm of the scalp and are firmly attached to the hair. They resemble dandruff, but can’t be brushed off.

• No treatment kills all of the eggs so treatment must involve two applications, seven days apart. The first treatment kills all lice; the second treatment kills the lice that may have hatched from eggs not killed by the first treatment.

• Cover the person’s eyes while the treatment is being applied. A towel is a good way to do this.

• If you are using a lotion, apply the product to dry hair.

Lice can crawl and hide. The easiest and most effective way to find them is to follow these steps:

• If you are using a shampoo, wet the hair, but use the least amount of water possible.

Step 1 Comb any type of hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This stuns the lice and makes it difficult for them to grip the hair or crawl around.

• Apply the treatment near the scalp, using an ordinary comb to cover the hair from root to tip. Repeat this several times until all the hair is covered.

Step 2 Now comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth, head lice comb.

There is no need to treat the whole family - unless they also have head lice.

Concentrate on the head - there is no need to clean the house or the classroom.

Step 3 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

Only the pillowcase requires washing - either wash it in hot water (at least 60ºC) or dry it using a clothes dryer on the hot or warm setting.

Step 4 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

Step 5 Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

Faith in the Future at Galen

Galen Catholic College students, parents and staff commenced the new year with a sense of hope and optimism.

Despite the many hurdles presented to the college community in 2020, it’s clear that these have shaped us, given us strength and allowed us the opportunity to become more adaptable to rapid change. The growth we’ve all made became very apparent during the recent ‘short and sharp’ Remote Learning 3.0. When this was announced on a Friday afternoon, teaching and support staff were rapidly able to switch modes once again and prepared their classes, seamlessly providing students with the opportunity to continue achieving while learning from home. Likewise, college staff were proud of students and the way they were able to quickly adapt and engage. In light of our experiences, the 2021 Galen Catholic College college theme, ‘Faith in Our Future’ is a very fitting one. Developed by year 12 students at their recent retreats to Howman’s Gap and Lake Hume, ‘Faith in Our Future’ relates to the 200-year anniversary of Catholic Education in Australia. This theme will be proudly launched today at Galen’s Opening Mass, with celebrants Bishop Shane McKinlay, Fr Mike Pullar and Fr Nathan Vellar. The college is

excited to be holding this as the first ‘whole school’ event under the covered outdoor area, since the beginning of last year. Parents, guardians and carers will be able to attend through live streaming online.

Another recent whole-school event that students were excited for was the annual Swimming Carnival at the new Wangaratta Pool, and a great day was had by all! Dressed in an array of colour, students cheered and supported each other in the company of their fellow house members, from Champagnat, Brigid, Delany, MacKillop, Glowrey, Vincent, Chisholm and Patrick houses. In the spirit of growth and change, students have commenced 2021 in their new homerooms comprised of students from year 7 – 12. This new structure is already proving to be a success as senior students lead the way and welcome their younger peers in year 7 to the college community.

With a great sense of faith in the future, Galen Catholic College looks forward to the year ahead, with new horizons continued growth and boundless opportunity.

1st March 2021 Dear Parent/Guardian, RE: Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI) Survey – Parent/Guardian Survey I write to invite you to participate in the ECSI Survey which will assist us in better understanding how our Catholic identity is expressed in work and practice here at Galen Catholic College.

The Catholic University in Leuven was commissioned by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) to design a process and tools, based on sound research, to accomplish the goal of understanding our current Catholic identity and where the school community might like to see itself in the future.

The ECSI Survey is a key element of this process and I write to request your participation. The online survey gathers responses from students in Years 7 to 12, all staff and a representative sample of parents every 5 years. This provides a helpful picture of trends over time in our school community and culture.

You are invited to complete the survey online; it may take up to an hour to do so.

Try not to get caught up in the questions, simply respond intuitively.

Keeping a record of your individual user code and password will allow you to complete the survey over two or more sessions.

The survey is only available through the project website; please refer to the Instructions for Survey Completion for Parents. Your responses to this survey are guaranteed to be kept anonymous.

Enhancing Catholic School Identity General instructions for survey completion for parents Thank you very much for making time to participate in the Enhancing Catholic School Identity project.

The purpose of this survey research is to gain meaningful insights into how your son or daughter’s school views its Catholic identity today and how such identity might be shaped for tomorrow.

Everyone’s input is important.

Your participation should take about 55 minutes. It’s best to finish the survey in one shot, without having to come back later.

Your responses are anonymous and your personal data is treated confidentially in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.

Only you will be able to view your individual results and this can be done once you’ve completed the questionnaires.

The group will discuss, design, plan and organise opportunities for young people in the North East region.

Leadership and self-development activities are proposed with a certificate of participation and reference letter for future work issued to each representative completing 12 months membership.
