Our last rotation of NOTN took place on November 3rd in the resource centre and it included classes 9.7 and 9.8. This is part of the integrated studies units in year 9. NOTN allows students and their families to come and spend an evening dedicated to the achievements of Australia’s notable men and women. Our students look at a wide range of Australians from advocates to athletes, entrepreneurs, explorers, scientists and even our war veterans. Our year 9 students presented their visual display and took on the persona of their chosen individuals for the night. Families were invited to ask out notables about themselves and even vote for the best dressed, best performance, best visual display and best overall presentation. Students work really hard to create their presentation and gain a real sense of accomplishment and hopefully have a lot of fun in the process. I think all who attended the evening would agree the students should be really proud of their efforts.
Student recounts:
Thursday night, was the night that 9.7 and 9.8 students had been working hard towards for quite a while now. We were finally ready to present to onlooking parents, our Notable Australians that we had drawn out of a hat to live out their legacy. Our costumes, posters and props that we had prepared helped us to share the vital information we had sourced and learnt to the best of our ability. The time leading up to our presentation in the library was a blast, it was great to see all of our tremendous efforts come together. We used a variety of sources such as online history websites, library books and old videos to craft together how we were going to play our roles. We had a variety of famous Australian sports players, post-army veterans, those who have done incredible things for charity, news reporters like myself, and so much more. Personally, I had a great time and it was such a relief to see how seriously everyone took it, this showed in the reactions from the parents. In year 9 integrated this year, 9.7 and 9.8 started the task of "Night of the Notables". The teachers asked us to pick a notable Australian out from a hat, and research about their life. The criteria were, a poster filled with reliable information about chosen notable, and the 100-word snapshot. Throughout the 6-week period we had to complete this, we had a night to present our speech as out notable. On November 3rd, I, Amelia A, performed by speech as "Dame Edna". I loved performing and entertaining the parents who came to see us and work my hardest in order to gain some votes. Amelia Alyward
Building & Construction gain from hands-on experience
Over the first five weeks of Term 4 our 1st year Building & Construction students have been busy finishing off the new office space and tea room for our Maintenance staff. This has involved the students installing a kitchen including overhead cupboards, tiling and grouting a splash back, learning how to hang doors and installing door furniture, laying carpet and timber, vinyl flooring and lastly completing architraves and skirting boards. This project has allowed students to gain a valuable insight into the construction industry while giving them real life scenarios to complete.
Lily Knox has it covered in Year 9 Astronomy
Students in the Year 9 Astronomy Elective have studied many topics over the semester. From looking at Astrophotography and processing images from a Robotic telescope network, to looking at Supernovas and using raw data collected from these supernovas to calculate Hubble’s Constant, and eventually the age of the universe. The students also got to research of topic of their choice. Lily Knox did an excellent job researching the issue of Space Junk and used the Prezi App to present the assignment. Ms Timms noted that it was one of the best she has seen for a long time.

On Saturday 22nd October two of Galen’s students headed to Red Hill for the MTB - Gravity Enduro National Championships.
In the Under 15 Boys competition, 50 competitors lined up at the start. Due to all the rain leading up to the event, the track wasn’t the best. Being wet and slippery made the day very hard, but the boys pushed through with some fantastic results.
Kinta Gonzalez took 9th position with an impressive time of 19:52.50 and Eli Green came across the line in 39th place with a time of 24:03.64.
Congratulations to both of the boys on their fantastic results over the weekend and all the best for the remainder of 2022!
Lochie makes it into State Development Basketball program
Congratulations to Lochie Harvey (Year 10) who has made it into a State Development Program for Under 18s Basketball in Victoria.This involves early morning training commitments in satellite hubs across the State, which he'll be attending in Wodonga. The Galen community wishes Lochie all the best in the upcoming Australian Junior Cup – one of the top 20 under 18’s for Country Victoria in January.
