Visual Arts Showcase

Congratulations to Galen’s talented visual arts students who have been successful in having their work exhibited in the current Showcase 2021 exhibition at Benalla Art Gallery. The students including: Gemma Casagranda, Isabelle Devers, Regan O’Brien, Harsh Chaudhary, Annabel Martinac, Sarah Simonetti, Allira Brookes, Meg Higgs and Bonnie Shanley are exhibited among students from other regional schools: Benalla P-12 College, FCJ College Benalla, Mansfield Steiner School, Sacred Heart College Yarrawonga and Wangaratta High School. The work from Unit 4 Studio Art and Visual Communication Design really shines in the contemporary gallery space.

Showcase 2021 celebrates the abilities and diverse concerns of young creatives. With a dynamic approach to presentation, the exhibition also includes student preparatory support material such as folios and notebooks. Once again, well done to the successful applicants, after a very difficult two years having your work exhibited in a public art space ends the year on a high note and your teachers are all very proud of you.

Showcase 2021 is open until November 28 at Benalla Art Gallery.

Stunning artworks emerge for Sara in debut solo exhibition

After being shortlisted for Top Arts two years in a row, it comes as no surprise that Galen 2020 Graduate Sara Cope is following her passion in 2021 with her first solo show ‘Emerging’ at Art Gallery on Ovens. Coming to fruition during her time this year as a resident artist and a successful recipient of the Young Artist Mentorship Program, Sara has been able to immerse herself, learning about installing exhibitions, further exploring her style and developing her practice.

Sara’s first exhibition features a range of bold linocut prints inspired by rural life and a love for the environment. Visitors to the gallery can expect to see some comical chook and cow characters, as well as a striking wall of Acacia. “I love wattle – they are my absolute favourite flower and plant,” she said. “I have eight different varieties of wattle represented with bright yellow blooms over the top of a black and white print.

It really shines as you walk into the gallery.”

Sara is currently in the process of enrolment at RMIT where she’ll be studying Fine Art next year. See Emerging: Works by Sara Cope at the Art Gallery on Ovens in the laneway off Murphy Street until November 1.

Year 7 students get inspired by some Senior Science Techniques Our fabulous Lab Tech Giles Elsom, has inspired our year 7s by demonstrating some techniques used to separate mixtures using equipment normally used by our senior students.

Students got to separate “fake blood” (red food dyed water and oil) using a centrifuge, see the distillation process, filtering using a vacuum filter and more. The highlight being able to sperate DNA molecules using electrophoresis. Jaxon Coleman (7.2) and Ada Overberg (7.3) were selected to be

Galen Space Seeds Ambassadors are ready to go!

Galen Students Claire O’Gorman (year 9), Lili Ashby ( year 8) and Saskia Teerlak (year 8) were extra excited today to be the first Galen Students to get their hands on the long awaited “Golden Wattle Space Seeds”. The seeds have just spent 6 months on the International Space Station. The three students will take the lead role in looking after the seeds, as the “Galen Space Seeds Ambassadors” , over the next few years. Other classes and students will also have the opportunity to be involved, but these three have been part of the initial submission to be part of the program, and have been anxiously waiting for the last 6 months for them to arrive here in Wangaratta.

“Through the difficult times of the Coronavirus, one of the things I could look forward to was the arrival of the Wattle seeds which have been in the International Space Station for 6 months” said Lili.

Saskia is also excited “When Ms Timms reminded me about the wattle seeds a few days ago, I was so happy that Lili, Claire and I would be the first to see them! And then today, it was very exciting getting to open the parcel and look through everything we received.”

At first when I heard about it I was really excited, and now to have the opportunity to plant the seeds, watch them grow and compare them to the other Wattle Seeds that haven’t been in space will be just so cool!. I’m really excited to see how it all goes over the next few years.”

Saskia is also curious about the seeds “The thing I was most looking forward to with the wattle seeds was seeing if the ones that went into space looked different to the ones on Earth. When I saw them, they looked exactly the same, which is making me even more excited to see if they’re different once they’ve grown, or if one takes longer than the other to grow.”

Lili is also looking forward to seeing what the future holds “I’m looking forward to seeing the differences and similarities of the Wattle seeds which have been in space and the Wattle seeds which have stayed on earth. Getting involved with this project made me hopeful for a future where we can go into space ourselves!”

Galen’s Great 2021 Spelling Bee During Extended Homeroom on Wednesday 27th October students participated in an online Spelling Bee! In addition to earning House points for correct answers, points were also awarded for participation, with all points going toward the 2022 House Cup.
