Hannah has an eye for Astronomy Year 9 Astronomy students have been looking at Astrophotography. Through the “Our Solar Siblings” program students get access to a world wide robotics telescope network - https://lco.global Students get to tell the telescope network which deep space object they would like to observe, the robotics network compiles the data and decides which telescope is free and can observe the object. It then takes three photos, one using a blue filter, the next a green filter and lastly a red filter. Each image uses approximately 9-10 mins of telescope time. The raw data images are sent to the class via a google drive folder. The students then process the images using “Fits Liberator Software” – developed by NASA and the European Space Agencies, to get the light balance – then they finally combine the three images in colour in Photoshop. During our last round of remote learning, Hannah Mason showed what a good eye she has, and produced these fabulous images.

Year 7 Art in the classroom It was great being back in the classroom Tuesday after the surprise announcement regional Victoria was out of lockdown. Year 7 Art was able to get right into clay, for a double period. The students have been researching the Hermannsburg Potters from central Australia. The artists from the community are from a long line of artists including the famous artist Albert Namatjira.

The students created clay pots by making a ball of clay then carving out the inside. On the top of their pots are a bird from our local environment of Wangaratta, Bpangerang Country.

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up

Please Use Designated Area On College Street

We have had a number of recent safety concerns brought to our attention from students, staff and neighbours and are therefore asking that parents please put the safety of our students and one another first and use the designated pick up and drop area.

It is important that students are dropped off and pickup in this area and not in surrounding streets. There are a number of reasons for this but the most important reason is safety.

Students can arrive and leave school without any risks at all to themselves or their families.

Students don’t have to run between cars or walk through staff carpark areas Eliminates traffic congestion in the surrounding streets, particularly Park Crescent and Phillipsons Streets, making it safer for our neighbours Illegal u-turns and parking don’t need to occur Students are protected from weather with undercover walkways Central location for students

Unfortunately, police have been contacted by neighbours and the College and will be patrolling to ensure that cars are not picking up and dropping off in Park Crescent and illegally along Phillipsons Street.

Debutant Coordinators 2022

Do you love to coordinate events, love dancing, Deb Balls?! Then we need YOU! The Galen Parents’ Association organise the annual Debutant Ball, our two coordinators have been running the show for many years and have stepped down this year from the role. The Coordinators have provided a detailed timeline on the schedule of organising the Deb, the providers you would contact, it is all ready to go. We just need someone to pick up the reins. Senior Girls Basketball – Hume CHAMPS! After a lengthy trip to Shepparton (roadworks galore) the girls had to jump straight onto the court and pull out all the stops, which they did. They should be proud of the way they conducted themselves on the day.

Game 1: versus Wanganui – WIN! 31 – 16 MVP: Bridie Nolan Top Scorer: Morgan Byrne After a slow start (probably due to cold legs), the girls needed a reminder that netball was the next day & that they were allowed to dribble. We were lucky we were hitting our threes, with no one better than Bridie ‘Step Back’ Nolan, always checking where her feet were – no long twos! Morgs was fantastic driving to the ring, and was backed up by Kyah never giving up, and always putting in a second and third effort. The second half was far smoother, with Bridgette finding her groove and having plenty to say, both on and off the court (with all due respect). Running away with the game in the end, the girls started the day on top.

Game 2: versus SEDA – WIN! 27 – 23 MVP: Billie Stemmer Top Scorer: Kyah Harvey The second game started with no score until 4 minutes into the first half, but then it was one-for-one, with plenty of contact. Billie kept her eye on the prize, ignoring the hand in the back and made sure SEDA worked hard for every possession. Ella was hard to beat with strong screens and back up by the silent assassin Maya, who was always keeping SEDA on their toes trading flawless threes for flawless layups.

The second half saw Eb put her body on the line and getting in the oppositions head. After a tight game, we held posses-

sion for the dying seconds of the game to come away with the most important W of the day.

Senior Girls Netball

After a reschedule due to lockdowns the Senior girls netball team were finally able to play on Thursday the 19th of August. They were due to face FCJ Benalla and Greater Shepparton but due to FCJ pulling out we ended up playing one game. The first quarter Galen came out firing and kept their opponents to 4 goals whilst the shooters were on fire shooting 23 goals for the quarter.

The second quarter Galen picked up their speed and were able to shoot 26 goals and Greater Shepparton were able to score 6 goals. The third quarter saw Galen shooters score 22 goals and the defenders were able to keep Shepparton to 3 goals. Coming into the last quarter the Galen girls set themselves a goal and they fell short by 1 goal shooting 28 goals for the last quarter, taking the games score to 99-14 bringing home the Hume Region flag. It was a great team effort and we were able to share court time and positions around. Shooters shot perfectly all day, defenders cut off passes all game and mid courters ran all game long.

Hello, I am writing to you hoping that you will speak to your students about the bike jumps in Wangaratta.

We are constantly getting people from the community contacting us about the behaviours and actions of the kids, teens and young adults who are hanging out at the jump areas.

The bike jump issue has been going on for a long time, months before I started.

Council staff have been actively looking for ways to allow young people to enjoy building and using bike jumps while respecting others and the environment.

We had discussion with a number of young people about the ‘rules’ or guidelines they had to follow for them to be allowed to build on the area. We had concerns from environmental groups and members of the community about the plants and trees getting damaged and the animals being harmed and losing their shelters.

I spent a lot of time talking to bike jump users at St Bernards & Arlington, reiterating that they can’t leave rubbish behind, chop down the trees, light fires and make jumps near tree roots.

I do understand that the people I spoke to may have moved on and a new group of young people may have moved in.

We had large signs made up specifying the areas and a map showing where the other allocated jumps were. The signs also had the rules we agreed upon.

It wasn’t long before we got complaints. Jump ownership, bullying and threatening behaviour, rubbish left behind and fires lit.

Our teams would go and clean up the mess left behind. We don’t want rubbish getting in the waterways!

The sign at the railway bridge was the first to be vandalised. First it was spray painted, then ripped out and stomped on. We discussed the damage with our councillors, who agreed originally that we should keep the bike jumps in specified jump areas. They were disheartened, as we all were, and the decision to remove the railway bridge jumps was tabled.

Recently, damage has begun again at the Arlington bike jump site. It is hard for us to support these sites when we are having to deal with these actions.

We are one of the only Councils that let their young people build jumps on our land!

What we’re seeking from you: We are hoping that you can get the message across to your students that it is not okay to damage trees, leave rubbish everywhere, abuse passers-by and light fires.

Local environment and sustainability groups as well council’s natural resource management team are really upset as young trees they planted have been broken, a waste of time and resources.

We really appreciate if you could make all students aware that we won’t tolerate the damage and complete disregard to the rules that we agreed upon. If the damage continues, we won’t be able to support these bike jump sites anymore and they will be dug out, with no further activity allowed. This is their last chance.

We’re sorry we have to bring this to your attention, but we hope that you can speak to the students and make them aware. It is worth noting that these actions and behaviours could result in police action. The signs installed were of a significant cost and the activity is blatant vandalism.

We don’t want our young people to lose these jumps. We think it’s great that they get out there and build them, testing their limits, collaborating with others, being active and off devices!
