HOW TO REBOOT SYSTEM YOUR

Anyone who’s ever owned a computer or mobile device has encountered the dreaded spinning pinwheel, hourglass or blue screen of death. It’s the point where your productivity either slows down or comes to a screeching halt. The best thing to do in situations like this is what the tech folks call, “a hard reboot”. A hard reboot is different than simply shutting down your device and far less invasive than deleting everything and starting over. A hard reboot works to reset what’s inside, correct glitches, remove redundancies and increase efficiency allowing for better performance and greater connectivity. In a way All Hallows is going through a reboot of its own, resetting what’s inside, keeping what works and letting go of things that inhibit performance and prevent connectivity.

A good computer system is measured by its ease of use, versatility and ability to complete complex tasks with speed and accuracy. In many ways, schools are measured by a similar metric. Good teachers are often measured by their versatility through their management of resources, differing classroom dynamics and learning styles while also bringing valuable insights and new ideas to their lessons. A school administration is measured by how responsive they are to the needs of their faculty, their ability to innovate and create points of collaboration, “connectivity” through partnerships and programs that have value beyond the classroom.

However, to truly be effective there needs to be ease of use and a confidence that the system won’t break down when the user needs it the most. In that way, our students give us an accurate measure of the user experience that we’ve created.

Though, to truly take advantage of all that All Hallows has to offer, an All Hallows student must, first and foremost, show a willingness to learn and an eagerness to engage with the world around them. They must be active in their education, avoiding the countless distractions, negative influences and fatigue that plague so many of our young people today. They also need to be confident in knowledge that the system won’t break down when they need it the most. Yet, unlike a computer program, we can’t be binary in our thinking. To instill confidence and maintain the integrity of our community we must continue to be bold and forward thinking in our approach to education and service. We have to reinforce through action the idea that the best kind of learning comes through experience and that the answers to life’s questions won’t be found on YouTube or at the end of google search. It is for this reason that we continue to seek out partnerships and network with organizations and individuals that share our values and have a vested interest in seeing our young men grow into competent leaders, innovators and men of integrity.

This year’s school motto is “Courageously and Firmly Proactive” a quote attributed to Pope Francis to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Pope Pius XI’s declaration of St. Joseph as the patron saint of the Catholic church.

As an institution our mandate is to continuously look for new ways to serve our students, families and our community and to be courageously and firmly proactive in all that we do for many, many years to come.

A Vision for the Future Leading with purpose is the key to continuous improvement and achieving our vision of a school that is both spiritually enriched and academically challenging. The impact of a world pandemic has not suppressed the creativity and innovation of the All Hallows community. In fact, it served to fortify our common bonds and revive the sense of “Brotherhood” among the students. It is through this strength that All Hallows continues to fulfill its mission of providing a superior faith based education to Inner City young men in the tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice.

This publication celebrates and showcases the accomplishments of our younger alumni and spotlights select members of the senior class who are poised to enter the next phase of their life’s journey. It also acknowledges the incredible work of the faculty that have effected positive change in the school’s curriculum and created renewed energy within the building.

This spring, renovations and repairs to our facility have begun transforming our building into a more functional and safer space for both the students and the resident Brothers. The reallocation of square footage once used exclusively by the Brothers will allow for dedicated spaces for STEM initiatives, art, music, and guidance, while providing a modern comfortable living space for the Brothers.

We continue to expand our affiliations with Fordham University, University of Notre Dame, Manhattan College, St. John’s and St. Francis College to provide our students with college level courses along with participation in research and analysis projects. Our programs with Fordham University are taught by Fordham professors and some students split their course time between All Hallows and the Rose Hill Campus providing them with a real college experience.

The introduction of the “Leadership Career Pathway Program” brings in representatives from various career fields to highlight opportunities that are available and the course of study that the students should take while in college. These fields include Banking and Finance, Law, High Level Government Positions and Engineering.

Lastly, I want to thank all that have participated in our Second Century $10 Million comprehensive campaign. We are at 88.4 percent of our goal with a little over a year to go to reach the five-year mark. With your generosity, let’s try to close out this campaign strong and secure that the mission of All Hallows will continue to serve our community for generations to come.

From the Principal’s Desk

As I journey through my 17th year as an educator and 7th at All Hallows, I find myself continually blessed and grateful to have been given the opportunity and responsibility to lead and work with this special community of students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni at our home here on East 164th Street.

This past September marked our 113th year providing a Blessed Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Education to the young men and future leaders of our world who walk through our doors each morning. We take pride in and celebrate the rich legacy of those who have come before us as well as celebrate the achievements of today.

Our students arrive as boys and leave as men equipped with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to succeed in our ever-changing world. We excitedly look towards our future which is full of promise and excitement and will not disappoint.

As principal it is my honor and pleasure to watch our students grow academically, socially, spiritually and athletically into these fine young men. I take pride in a highly dedicated faculty and staff that ensure our students past, present and future receive a quality Catholic education. I am blown away, appreciative and thankful to all the families that make great sacrifices to send their sons to All Hallows and the alumni who continue to learn, earn and return that help to support, mold and shape our school community. I can confidently say Blessed Edmund Rice is proud of the work that is carried out in his mission at All Hallows past, present and future.

From my first day here, I was welcomed into the All Hallows community with open arms. I felt supported and valued, and that hasn’t always been the case in other institutions where I have taught. I particularly enjoy teaching our students, our school culture and the plethora and diversity of clubs and organizations that we offer.

I’m getting the opportunity to make a difference; to have an impact. I wake up every single day with a sense of purpose. I’m getting a chance to see my students make discoveries--not only on an academic level, but also on a personal level--they are discovering things about themselves, and the world. I’m able to observe the way that our students relate to one another, specifically the way that they accept one another, and witness them and the amazing brotherhood shared by All Hallows students past and present. I love that our students take our motto to heart: Learn, earn, and return. All Hallows is home to me.

DAVID GARCIA ‘86 Vice-Principal of Student Affairs My teaching philosophy is simple: I believe that every student has the ability to learn with the right motivation and attitude. As a teacher, it is my obligation to provide my students with the tools necessary to succeed. Therefore, creating a stimulating environment where the opportunity for growth is expected and students’ abilities are reinforced in order for them to achieve their maximum potential is key.

In my current role as Vice Principal of Student Affairs, my philosophy goes beyond the classroom and centers on the individual as a productive member of society. A boy evolves into a young man with the desire to do good for his community and be an example to the world. I learned as a student at All Hallows that it was our duty to serve God and country.

My philosophy on education centers on this ideal.

“AWAKENING THE DESIRE TO DO SOMETHING”.

MR. NICHOLAS POWERS DISCUSSES ENGAGEMENT THOUGH SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY.

It was a shock to my system when I took an introductory course in Computer Science during my freshman year of college, Mr. Powers recalled.

It was fundamentally different, like learning a new alphabet and then jumping into writing a manual using those letters. The computer obeys the manual - if your directions are incorrect it will result in disaster! As a kid I always liked playing with Lego’s and now I was doing it virtually with abstract objects and commands. This was exciting because it was new. This world was not available to most people 10 to 15 years ago, and today people have begun to recognize it.

I studied Latin & Ancient Greek at a very good Classics program in college. I was drawn to it because it encompassed everything - history, political science, literature, philosophy, logic, and the premises for scientific inquiry. Those studies really brought everything together into a unity. That was important for me because the tendency today is to specialize to the point of a kind of intellectual myopia which inhibits rather than encourages fruitful study and research.

I wasn’t totally sure about what direction to take. I was led to Rome where I worked while continuing humanistic studies for three years before returning; I connected to friends of All Hallows and everythin happened rather naturally (and quickly).

The Rooftop Garden Initiative

At All Hallows, we’re working with Fordham University’s Center for Community Engaged Learning. Mr. Schuttè had been talking about his dream for a rooftop garden project for over a year, and he was ecstatic to finally be able to put me on this project. He connected me with the Center’s director, Dr. Gafney, and Reece the project coordinator, and that unleashed of flood of project ideas for engaging our guys in many disciplines. Fordham was just as enthusiastic about starting a rooftop project as we were - Dr. Gafney wrote her dissertation on Eden as a literary theme! Mr Schuttè wanted to bring learning back to the concrete realities of life - learning through sensory experience, getting your hands dirty, watching the seeds grow, studying something tangled in situ.

All this converged with my serious desire to respond to the Holy Father’s call in the so-called ‘environmental encyclical’ Laudato Si’ Praised Be You: On the Care of our Common Home, namely, to right the threefold relationship between God, man, and the earth. God put man on earth to master it and cultivate it in loving service, to bring it back to God with all its fruits. This means laboring to help things grow in our asphalt jungle and retrieving the right balance in today’s mechanical and digital society. The whole initiative has been placed under this mission.

A rooftop garden helps us live in the space we’re in by bringing us outside. The space we’ve chosen is the third-floor roof - currently a barren outdoor passageway between two sides of the building. We plan on turning it into a garden with potted flowers, fruits and vegetables, and if the roof can sustain the weight, a small tree or two. This will change the space into a spot where students will want to hang out. The process will require a lot of work, but we have an enthusiastic group of students led by Fordham’s Prof. Matt Lopez-Jensen, our expert.

In addition to the garden, we’ve been hosting a series of workshops to further engage the students so as to lay a solid groundwork and explore the various dimensions of this undertaking from different disciplines - community advocacy, botany & bio-diversity and other environmental concerns, architecture and the visual arts (Matt’s professional competence), and seeing and living out all the spiritual/theological implications.

The Fresh-Air Project

Another professor from Fordham who has reached out and engaged us is Steve Holler - Physics -, and Prof. Sankar biology -, who are working on promoting advocacy for studying air quality and promoting policies to that effect in the area.

As Prof. Sankar says, you can survive a week without food, a couple days without water, but no more than a few minutes without air. It’s what unites us all and therefore crosses all boundaries. Prof. Holler studies particulate matter in the air and has hooked us up with a few PurpleAir air quality sensors to measure particulate matter around 2.5 micrometers wide (You could fit 50 particles that size on a needle pin). This is of interest because it is the size at which things can be absorbed into the blood.

We have become more health conscious than ever about what we breathe, and now we can see our sensors and compare them to sensors on a public network throughout the city and the whole world. PurpleAir is completely transparent about the raw data in their devices, and so this encourages students to address these concerns directly. This is probably the first time for many students to handle large volumes of raw real-world data and to be the first on the scene to really look at it. And it’s not about some far off phenomenon; it’s right here in the room. Data analysis is one of the fastest growing disciplines for every sector. You don’t need some lab coat to tell me breathing soot is bad; but if I can see the patterns with a sensor on site, it doubly confirms what I knew and with details to show to others. This collaboration has given access to our students to be proactive in our local community while also connecting us to the larger network, connecting to the rest of the world. This goes back to finding the unity of things. You have to explore every corner, every little thing and take it seriously, and then you have to see in its relation to the whole.

Every one of these projects needs to have not only a clear, relevant idea - there are too many of those. It needs to go back to the “WHY”; why are we doing this? The projects and activity are a tool at our disposal to empower students. The WHY awakens the desire to do something. The idea is a steward of the reality, taking care of it, molding it. This is what pruning the garden will be like. The grape vine is most what it is, paradoxically, when it is pruned, clipped and restrained sometimes under the supervision of the gardener. To bear fruit, you have to curate the reality to be more what it already is underneath the overgrowth.

Arts and Advocacy

by Paul Michael Fontana My job is a weird amalgamation of two things that I have been interested in and involved with almost since I started at All Hallows. When I arrived at All Hallows - I came here from an arts-immersion grade school in the South Bronx, St. Augustine School of the Arts - there had been no play in 15 years. We did our first play that Spring, Shakespeare’s HENRY V. It’s been my pleasure to maintain the All Hallows Players and this year we’re doing a play by American playwright David Mamet (who will also have a show on Broadway this season). Until this year there hadn’t been a music class in the curriculum in 40 years. Over the years, it’s been clear that many of our students have been hungry for more access to the arts, as performers and creators but also as fans and consumers. My job is to find ways of integrating the Arts into the life of the school - like encouraging Museum visits for History classes - and creating partnerships with arts institutions that will give our students access to outside performances and exhibits. Being a school in New York City is such a benefit. We can be in at a show, concert or screening in Midtown or a gallery in the Village.

We are called to “stand in solidarity with those marginalized by poverty and injustice”. Advocacy has fallen under the banner of Student Government, Campus Ministry, and the Religion Department; the programs had no center of operations. My mandate from Mr. Schutte has been to reimagine our Advocacy programs and, as with the Arts, integrate them, centralize them, into the lived experience

of being the All Hallows family. Again, we have been working with partners, global and local, to broaden opportunities for Hallowsmen to become advocates and activists and engage with the world outside the school walls.

Our flagship arts partners (The Acting Company and Theatre Development Fund) have been from the world of theater, which is my background. [I have a Masters in Educational Theatre (SIC) from NYU.] We have had many performances of The Acting Company, America’s foremost classical repertory company, which brings recent graduates of some of the best theater conservatories to theaters across the country and schools around New York City. This year, the Company, with its troupe of amazing young actors from Juilliard, Yale, NYU, etc.), performed TWELFTH NIGHT in the school gym in our first professional in-school performance since the pandemic. Our partnership with TDF, Theatre [SIC] Development Fund who run the TKTS booth in Times Square, began in 2002. The Wendy Wasserstein Project (AKA Open Doors) is named for the Pulitzer-winning playwright who thought it might be fun and important to

take high school kids to the theater. Twenty years ago, next fall we took our first cohort of AH students to a Broadway show with our mentor, award-winning stage director Scott Ellis. For his service to the school, Scott was given the Edmund Rice Award in 2017. Last year, during the closure of the theaters, the 2020-21 cohort had access to hundreds of recorded plays. But, since Broadway’s back, so is The Wendy Program! This year we have a group of four juniors and four seniors who are seeing a curated selection of live performances to develop their critical-thinking skills and make them into life-long theater-goers. Let me say, you haven’t seen the musical MOULIN ROUGE! until you’ve seen it with a bunch of All Hallows boys!

Our newest partnership, and one of which I am very proud, is with Education Through Music. ETM is a non-profit organization that provides a proven music curriculum (focusing on Music Technology) and a veteran teacher, Mr. Alfredo Hernandez. All 9th and 10th graders are required to take this course this year. We’re always looking for inspiration from within the building as well as from outside. We have

had two successful Showcase events (and hopefully two more to come) featuring student authors, rappers, instrumentalists, actors, and singers. The AH Choir, under Mr. Figueroa’s baton, is alive and providing music for the school liturgies. And Mr. Florio has started a weekly Jam Band experience. Visual Artists, those who draw and paint and those who create with their cameras through video and photography, have a tremendous mentor in Brother Dunbar. This year, one of his young photographers, Junior Kevin Marshall, became one of 15 students from across the City to be part of Expanding the Walls, an eight-month photography-based program, at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

SIDEBAR: The school keeps in close contact with our arts alumni. Recently, Adrian Mercedes (‘17) wrote a musical, LO FINGIDO VERDADERO, about the life of Patron Saint of Actors, St. Genesius. Alum Nathan Rodriguez (‘17), a recent graduate of the music program at Lehman College, played in the pit and Mr. Figueroa played the villainous Roman Emperor.

When we had the BREAST CANCER WALK in October, it

really felt good not only to raise money for the very worthy Susan G. Komen Foundation, but to have our first, schoolwide public event. The student planning team really wanted to celebrate the women in our lives - the moms, the grandmothers and aunts, the women of the faculty and staff. The event, led by the students of the Advocacy and Activism elective, had well over 100 students (many with their families) walking in Joyce Kilmer Park. The Walk was preceded by a Pink Day, on which the AH Family wore pink to show solidarity with those suffering from Breast Cancer. Who knew that there were so many students who had pink ties, shirts, and socks? The Pink Day raised awareness for the Walk and a dress-down raised additional cash.

Our MOVEMBER IN DECEMBER EVENT widened the focus of our usual Prostate Cancer to include the topics of Testicular Cancer and Men’s Mental Health. The kids on the planning team really wanted to help de-stigmatize discussions of these two subjects. It was shocking how many of our students hadn’t had a conversation with their pediatrician about testicular cancer. And, I feel this event opened up channels for conversations about mental health and mental illness within our supportive school family. The event itself was co-sponsored by SMAC (Student Movement Against Cancer) and featured an afternoon of cards, board games, and good old fun. A substantial amount of money was raised for the Movember Foundation. Our work with Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders and Edmund Rice International led our students into some intense discussions with students from overseas. We were on an international committee of Edmund Rice schools to craft a document that was presented by COY16 (Conference on Youth) at the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. We were also able to spend some quality Zoom time with our cousins at St. Dominic’s College, an Edmund Rice school in Australia discussing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was wonderful for our students to get to work alongside students whose lives are substantially different and yet whose hearts and values are so in tune with our own.

Central to life at All Hallows - and it’s hard to know whether we instill this in our guys or whether they choose All Hallows because they sense it in the building - is the need to protect the vulnerable, help those in need, free those who are trapped, and find those who are lost. It’s the need we all have to be fully human. Because that need is so great, all we have to do is give them avenues and opportunities to express it. In the Arts, creation creates community - communities of artists. And those communities invite the audience, the listeners, the viewers into them to become part of the community. Shakespeare says that the Arts hold a mirror to Nature and I say so does Advocacy. Arts and Advocacy at All Hallows show us who we are, remind us to continually improve, and allow us to empathize with others. Both fill that need to show our humanity to others, in school and around the world.

The feeling of family, embodied by Mr. Sullivan and continued by Mr. Corrado, keeps me at All Hallows. When the guys leave All Hallows, I hope they take that sense of caring for others with them. For much of their careers in High School they have been on the receiving end of that care with teachers and staff modeling how to provide care for others. As they emerge into college life, they will have to be the safe space for others. I hope they will emerge with more curiosity and a deeper hunger to explore and celebrate and serve.

STUDENTS TO WATCH THEOPHILUS ACHEAMPONG ‘22 I was born and raised in the Bronx and live in our Morris Heights neighborhood with my mother and two younger siblings. My mother is originally from Ghana, West Africa and though we’ve moved a few times since my birth through neighborhoods like Kingsbridge and Tremont I was raised in the church. The key for me is doing what’s morally good and living by the commandments each day. l first heard about All Hallows when Mr. Mercado visited St. Joseph School to talk about the school. I wasn’t sure about All Hallows until I went to the Open House.

I saw how the ambassadors were willing to help me and answer any questions. I saw the tight community of ambassadors and teachers, and I wanted in.

Since then, I’ve prided myself in being involved, throughout my time at All Hallows, with the Varsity Soccer Team. I was privileged to lead the team this past year as Captain. During my freshman/sophomore years I was a member of Mentoring-in-Medicine: Science Pathfinders, a program that has helped me to explore many of my academic interests. I was also involved with the Foroige Leadership Conference, working with students throughout the US and Ireland.

This past year I was a member of Student Government and was a student ambassador. These experiences have made me a determined leader. Whether it leading a group of boys through a tough game on the soccer field or learning how to communicate with confidence I believe that these experiences taught me how to be focused through any endeavor and to strive until the work is completed.

My current college prospects include the Ivies and other top institutions. My future career aspirations involve working in the field of medicine. Whether that means going to medical school or pursuing a career in science through Chemistry All Hallows has exposed me to these specific areas of study. This is why I credit All Hallows and the Mentoring-in-Medicine program for helping me realize that, in the future, I want to work to help those with health problems.

CHRISTOPHER ARIAS ‘22

I was born in Costa Rica and lived there until I moved here in 3rd grade.

I currently live in Highbridge which is not the safest area but it is a very connected community where people know each other. I am a person who loves to help other because I know how it feels to need help. I am mostly a positive, happy person and although I may not be in the best living situation, I consider myself blessed to have a home, an education, food and other things.

I first heard about All Hallows in 8th grade. My dean told me it was a great academic catholic school so I chose to become a member of the All Hallows community because I wanted to get the best education possible before heading off to college. Some extracurricular activities I have been involved in were Bible Studies and Faith Sharing which helped my faith grow stronger and the Mat Crew which taught me about teamwork and responsibility.

My future aspirations is to be a successful person. One of my passions right now is real estate. All Hallows prepared me for the road ahead by teaching me hard work, perseverance, not being afraid to ask questions, look presentable and treat everyone with respect.

What I will miss most about All Hallows is all the great friendships I’ve built with my fellow students and teachers. Though I didn’t enjoy it; the disciplined I learned from teachers and adminsitrators did shape much of my character.

KEVY ARIAS ‘22

My family holds strong Catholic tradition which I believe has helped me improve as a morally righteous person. When my brother decided to come to All Hallows he introduced the school to me. I really admire my older brother and wanted to follow in his footsteps and be an All Hallows man.

I have been involved in the National Honor Society, Student Government, and Montefiore Mentoring-In-Medicine which really opened my eyes to one thing: how much I can help others. I realized that I can actually make a difference for someone else even if it’s simply bringing them a smile and that is something I strive to do every day.

The camaraderie in All Hallows is irreplaceable. From the moment I enter the school as an anxious 9th grader I formed a tight-knit community with some very interesting people. Whether it be debating some stupid topic like if you drop soap does the floor get clean or does the soap get dirty or studying together for a US History exam, we always had each other’s backs which is something I will never forget.

I have enrolled at Dartmouth College, the Ivy League in New Hampshire, and hope to study Biochemistry and in time become a neurosurgeon.

I think I will mostly miss the atmosphere. At the moment I still have so many things I want to do with so many people at the school but I have so little time.

This brotherhood and always having something to do, places to go, and someone to talk to is a very important to me and I am going to miss it.

I was born and raised in the Bronx and bounced around a couple of different neighborhoods until I was 4 when my mother moved us to an apartment in Highbridge. My family originated from the Dominican Republic. They parents were raised there but my father went to college in Russia, then immigrated to the U.S and ended up in New York looking for work. I attended Sacred Heart School right across the street from my home.

As an Eighth grader I researched All Hallows and felt a connection there. Other schools I looked at had a lot more students or wasn’t focused on education first. All Hallows felt like they created real connections with their students as well as lessons about life and how to act as men. There is only one thing I regret about my time at All Hallows and that is that I didn’t join more activities or programs during my time here. Obviously, I couldn’t have predicted the Pandemic which would take away 2 years but I still wish I could have done more.

However, the few I did do really taught me something. All Hallows may not be the flashiest school, the school with the best athletics, or the school with the most money but none of that matters. All Hallows does an amazing job at turning young kids into young men who will go out and make a change in the world.

Currently I am planning on studying Computer Science at Iona College. I have always been interested in technology and how different softwares were run behind these technologies. There are so many different avenues that I could branch out into like Game Design, Cyber Security, and Artificial Intelligence but All Hallows has prepared me for the road ahead by showing me and many others what it means to be responsible and to grow into a positive person.

What I will miss the most about All Hallows is the brotherhood I made with my fellow students. I met great people who I can say have helped me and who I’ve helped. As for the teachers, All Hallows has an excellent crew who knew how to brighten the classes up, mix in some fun and when to get serious and down to work. When I look back on this article many years from now, I hope I can confidently say that I achieved my goals through the help of All Hallows and the time I spent there.

ETHEN ORTIZ ‘22 My name is Ethen Ortiz; I’m an Italian and Puerto Rican man born and raised in the South Bronx. Growing up was pretty hard for me. I went through numerous challenges as a little boy such as my parents’ separation, being bullied, losing family members that I cared a lot about, and my most challenging difficulty; depression. I always said, “The sun doesn’t shine every day; the storms will come”. I’m a firm believer that we should never let our fears and setbacks decide our future.

I heard about All Hallows when I interviewed with the Student Sponsorship Program (SSP). Once I went through the front doors of All Hallows, I knew this was the school for me. The staff and the principal welcomed my family and me in a way that made me feel like I was at home. Throughout my four years at All Hallows, I have participated in many different extracurricular activities, partnerships, and programs such as PeerFoward, a leadership program that helps prepare juniors and seniors learn the steps needed to go to college. I also participated in another leadership program called Foroige Leadership for Life, which helped me become a better leader. Other activities included photography club, mock trial, student government, and Nubian studies. The current extracurricular activities I’m involved in are student government, ambassador club, engineering tomorrow, big brothers, counseling, and peer ministry. In addition, I was able to represent All Hallows on the school’s bowling team for two years. Because of my dedication and hard I was given the captain spot my senior year which was an honor.

What sets All Hallows apart from other schools is the small but strong family atmosphere you feel as you walk through those doors. Throughout my four years at All Hallows, I’ve made so many strong friendships with classmates and teachers which made my years at All Hallows unique. My current college prospects are the University of Florida, the University of South Florida, and the University of Tampa. My future career aspiration is to become a school guidance counselor. I want to help students who struggle with mental health and guide them to their future goals. School counseling has helped shape me into who I am today and All Hallows has prepared me for my future.

Sadly, as I move onto the next phase in my life, I must leave All Hallows. But trust me, I won’t ever forget about All Hallows and who knows, I might come back and become a guidance counselor. I think the main thing I will miss about All Hallows is the feeling of being in a place that feels like home. I’ll miss seeing the halls of this building but I’ll take with me the memories of my high school journey because those memories will always bring me back to All Hallows. To every teacher and staff member; thank you.

MARC DANIEL SANDOVAL ‘22 I’m Filipino and I was born and raised in the South Bronx. Some of my personal values involve achieving personal growth and helping those around me reach their goals and never sell themselves short. I’ve been involved in Student Government as both homeroom rep and President, Blessed Edmund Rice Society, Math Team, Ambassadors Club, Mentoring in Medicine, Engineering Tomorrow, ACTION, Foroige, National Honor Society, Peer Ministry, MAT Crew, Big Brothers, the Rooftop Garden-Human Ecology Project and Gilder Lehrman. All of these experiences have taught me that when you devote yourself to something and are passionate it, you will inevitably be viewed as a leader.

All Hallows fosters such a tight-knit community. The teachers’ availability and the effectiveness of their office hours were imperative to my successes as a student.

I really enjoyed the multitude of advocacy projects offered by the school. This really gave me the feeling that I was contributing to a much larger cause even through my freshman and sophomore year of high school.

All Hallows’ academic rigor and the countless of engineering programs have prepared me for the road ahead. The academic rigor and the AP classes really helped me with self-pace and learning the responsibilities. I am waiting for my decision letters from Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth. I’ve already been accepted

to both Binghamton and Stony Brook, two of my top choices. I’m looking into Biomedicine or Computer Engineering as a career.

I will miss all my teachers and mentors throughout the years, the administration and my guidance counselors. Each have played a crucial part in my life. I will take with me all of the skills and lessons I’ve acquired at All Hallows and the connections I’ve made with my brothers as well.

My mother immigrated from the Dominican Republic and growing up I always felt a sense of pride about being Dominican. I was born and raised West Harlem. Throughout my life I have had that strong connection with family, despite my father not being around. My mother is one of the most important people to me because of the hardships she endured with my father not being there, and her not knowing the language. My mom left her home in the Dominican Republic, her family, everything she knew to offer me this education in America and at All Hallows and I don’t ever take it for granted. She learned a new language and adapted to a new lifestyle just for me which is something that takes courage. I also take a lot of pride in my last name because of my grandfather who had to clean the streets and shine shoes in order to gain an education would later become a lawyer and soon senator of the Dominican Republic and that’s another thing that keeps me going and working as hard as I work here in All Hallows.

There are lots of things that set All Hallows apart from other schools.

First off When I was in elementary school I was bullied and coming to All Hallows helped me because it felt like family. It is so strong that there are days where I don’t want to go home from school. I thought, I would never go back to my school to work but the teachers gave us good advice on how to get through the day just as they did when they attended. It helped us gain a connection with our teacher on a deeper level and we felt like they were one of us.

My future career aspirations are to either become a lawyer or sports agent. All Hallows has definitely prepared me for the road ahead simply because they gave me more than an academic education but life lessons. This school, the building and the people inside it have been the one of the highlights of my life. I will take with me the education and the values we learned with me. I am a product of the school and wherever I go I will represent All Hallows with pride and respect.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Matthew Cruz’s dedication to public service extended far beyond his years at All Hallows. Upon graduating in 2010 Matthew attended Pace University earning a bachelor’s degree in 2014. It was at Pace University, that he began his career in politics serving as an aide to then City Council Member James Vacca. Later, Matthew would pursue graduate studies at Hunter College earning a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. At age 25, Matthew was appointed District Manager of Bronx Community Board #10 which represents the communities of City Island, Co-op City, Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck and Westchester Square. Matthew stated, “As District Manager I field all municipal concerns and advocate on behalf of residents that need city services. It has been my honor to continue to serve my neighbors in this capacity”. Currently, Matthew is a candidate in the race for New York State Assembly for District-82.

My family and I were from very modest means. Originally from East Harlem Matthew moved to the Morris Park section of the Bronx when he was 16. My brothers and I were raised in public housing. As he describes it, “All Hallows High school remains one of the most affordable and successful parochial institutions in the City of New York and was the only option for me because it guaranteed success”. While at All Hallows, I had dreams of serving my community in elected office and made sure that I pursued my lifelong goals through college and later, graduate school.

Even as a teenager, Matthew’s belief in the democratic process and the importance of representation within the community was evident. While a senior at All Hallows Matthew remembered a documentary he produced for his Media Arts class. The project looked into the importance of voting and why so many people choose not to participate. He recalled how he and his production team went as far as securing an interview with the then Bronx Burrough President, Ruben Diaz Jr. to discuss the issue. Even then, Matthew was planting the seeds to a career in politics.

While at All Hallows I played junior varsity baseball and was a proud member of the History Club. History as an academic subject never receives the credit it deserves. Under the guidance of Mr. Gallo, we learned domestic and international governance. Those discussions showed me the importance of patience and reason during debate; a lesson he carries with him today.

I attribute any success I’ve had to my family’s belief in me and teachers like Principal Sullivan, Mr. Lauber, Brother Casey, Mr. Gallo and Mr. Porfirio Gonzalez for saving my life.

My advice to the current students at All Hallows is to take time to enjoy the journey while achieving personal and professional goals. For me, four years is just too short a time to really understand what All Hallows and its teachers will mean to you, and if I could re-live my day at All Hallows I would do it all over again.

Lastly, I participated in the Liberty LEADS program at Bank Street College through All Hallows, which provided me with a strong network of friends, countless hours of SAT prep, and access to summer programming like studying abroad in Nice, France through AFS. These experiences taught me the importance of self-awareness, leaning into my strengths, working closely with others to accomplish a shared goal, and leading with a sense of purpose. These lifelong lessons sit at the very core of what I’m learning about as an MBA candidate at Stanford.

Mariano was born into a loving family of Dominican immigrants that settled throughout various parts of the Bronx in the late 1980s. From a very young age he recalls his family’s collective sacrifices which motivated him to achieve. I found inspiration in the dreams my mother deferred to afford me and my brother the opportunity to receive a high-quality education in America. Despite living paycheck-to-paycheck, my mother made it a priority to budget for a Catholic education to ensure we could pursue our academic ambitions.

I was initially drawn to All Hallows because of the tight-knit community the school had fostered through small class sizes and dedicated faculty and staff. At All Hallows, I learned to value education as a starting point for my professional journey, and embraced every opportunity made available to me through internships, summer excursions, and college enrichment programs. All Hallows was truly a second home for me. The faculty served as positive role models and extended family members. These formative years equipped me with the unwavering work ethic and desire to learn needed to secure admission into Columbia University.

I have vivid memories of participating in Bro. Casey’s Math Club, where I put my love of math to the test week after week. I recall spending countless hours practicing, traveling, and playing with teammates on the varsity soccer, baseball, and golf teams. My most memorable experience, however, was working as a student council representative and ultimately serving as student body president for the graduating class of 2010 alongside Anthony Hill (‘10). It was an immense

Upon graduating from All Hallows, I enrolled at Columbia University where I obtained a B.S. in Operations Research: Engineering Management Systems. While at Columbia, I was heavily involved with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, serving as Chapter President and leading our mentoring efforts for high school students throughout Washington Heights. I was also an active member of the Epsilon Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. along with fellow All Hallows alumni Amin Fernandez (‘07), Jason Tejada (‘09), Phillip Jerez (‘09), and Christian Morales (‘10). Additionally, I helped lead finance and philanthropy efforts for Grupo Quisqueyano, the Dominican affinity group on campus, as well as participated in week-long voluntary efforts to promote microfinance and public health in Ghana and Honduras through an organization called Global Brigades.

I started my professional career as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley thanks to a career preparation program I participated in through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO). While at Morgan Stanley, I advised a variety of clients within the technology industry that were considering strategic alternatives, including private financings, mergers and acquisitions, and initial public offerings.

It was there where I became fascinated by the large-scale impact technology was having on traditional industries and society at large. Interested in finding ways to partner with companies at the cutting edge of innovation, I transitioned to a technology investing role at ICONIQ Growth, the venture capital arm of ICONIQ Capital with over $14Bn in capital commitments. Throughout my four years at ICONIQ, I partnered with and invested in software companies striving to increase workplace productivity and make software development easier and more secure. In 2020, I enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and will be receiving my MBA degree in June 2022 with a Certificate in Public Management and Social Innovation.

My personal success is a consequence of proper access to quality education, capital, and technology, which are scarce in communities like my neighborhood in the Bronx.

Access to these resources made available through All Hallows and countless sponsors throughout my journey have afforded me the opportunity to pursue ambitions I never thought were possible for a Dominican kid from the Bronx. As I look forward to the next chapter of my life, my mission is to build, partner with, and scale durable businesses where I can positively influence their trajectories and bring them closer to their true potential in the same way All Hallows has helped me achieve mine. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while living in Silicon Valley over the last 6 years is the importance of taking risks. A growth mindset affords you the risk appetite needed to stretch outside of your comfort zone, learn from your mistakes, and become comfortable with failure. I firmly believe that each of us can accomplish greatness if we commit to ongoing self-development and personal growth.

JASON TEJADA ‘09 Jason Tejada was born and raised in Washington Heights and is a proud alum of All Hallows High School. Upon graduating from All Hallows back in 2009, Jason attended Columbia University on a full scholarship. He graduated in 2013 with a BA in financial economics with a (minor) in History. However, Jason’s relationship with All Hallows did not end at graduation. Beyond his work as an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley Financial Services, he serves on the All Hallows Board of Directors.

My two younger sisters and I were raised by my mother (a trained accountant in DR), who was a stay-at-home mother.

My dad was a tailor. Together, they operated a small family business – a dry cleaners and tailor shop. Education was the tool my parents sought to equip us with to have a better life.

Me and my sisters’ educational journey was made possible thanks to the Children’s Scholarship Fund which provided us partial scholarships to Incarnation School in the Heights which would eventually put me on the path to All Hallows.

As the first born and a first generation American, my parents were focused on providing for us and for our education. I remember when open house season started. My eighth-grade teacher suggested I attend the All Hallows open house. My teachers knew my parents were all about academic rigor.

At the time, I just wanted to graduate, get into college and begin a great career. As I reflect now, that was purely a proxy for wanting advancement for myself, my family, and my community. All Hallows summed it up nicely: Learn. Earn.

Return. A motto that I live by.

The summer prior to my start at All Hallows I spent at New York Presbyterian receiving chemotherapy. I was diagnosed with cancer the spring of my 8th grade year. My family and I were concerned that we would lose my spot at All Hallows or that I may miss high school altogether. My parents and I met with the Principal, Mr. Sullivan that summer and we were prepared for a negative outcome. Mr. Sullivan looked at us and said, “you’re one of us don’t worry about your spot”.

He asked, “are you sure you do not want a home school or sabbatical year arrangement”? I was adamant that I was not for home schooling. I was not going to let cancer affect my entire life. I wanted to start on time with my peers. Mr. Sullivan said, “DONE”. Bald and fragile, I was able to make it to my orientation. I was freaking out. Will they make fun of me? Will I be ostracized? I went to orientation and no one treated me differently. I remember having to walk all the way up to the top floor, the freshman floor, I was TIRED but I loved it. I was treated just like any other of my classmates in public. In private All Hallows made the necessary accommodations which thankfully was not much (shout out to Sister Pat’s couch). I would go on to miss the first weeks of school but All Hallows stuck with their promise. I woke up one day and next to my hospital bed were all my text books and all the homework assignments. I remember looking at my Latin homework and going oh boy (I went on to ace all years of Latin). I say this not for empathy but to illustrate the value proposition of All Hallows - academic, professional, spiritual, and familial.

The programs, clubs and activities, at All Hallows served as the bedrock to develop my social and non-classroom skills. It was because of that sense of community that I have continued to be involved in extracurriculars throughout college and my adult life. Due to safety concerns, my parents raised us fairly sheltered regardless of how much I wanted to hang out on the “block” or “chill after school.” Extracurriculars were my avenue toward socialization. Mr. Cabán, you can take full credit for me not having any interest in visiting another open house after I went to All Hallows and visited the All Hallows Television Studio. AHTV made it possible for a child who did not have a computer or internet service until seventh grade to learn how Hollywood makes its magic. I legitimately cannot put into words how special AHTV was.

It was the only club I was involved with for four consecutive years. It was the first time I can remember developing a hobby, an interest outside of work (school), and learned that the arts have something for everyone. Every child has the arts in them and I learned art went beyond drawing and coloring. It was the first time I was able to merge personal interest with academia - I learned I loved documentaries so much that I was allowed to produce two. I think about those productions a couple times a year.

While attending All Hallows, I was in the Job Opportunities Program (JOP). Who else can say their first professional job was at Bloomberg LP the summer before my senior year?

Through JOP I received professional development training and learned professional etiquette at the age of 16. I learned how to build a resume, prep for an interview, and network. I thank All Hallows’ for being involved and nominating me for

this opportunity. Through the Theater Development Fund (TDF) I gained a love for musicals and theater. I would have never been to a Broadway show had it not been for the TDF. What a mark this program left on me. It broadened my dimension so much. Without it, I probably would have never been exposed to Broadway which would be a sad change to my story. Similar to AHTV, I learned a new dimension of the arts and a new medium of entertainment. What made it sweeter is enjoying the program with my classmates, none of whom had ever had exposure to Broadway.

After Columbia, I started my career in finance with JPMorgan Chase. I transitioned to Build America Mutual at the time, a startup finance company. I relocated to California to help build out the west coast business. I returned to New York in January 2019 to start as a Vice President with Morgan Stanley. I was recently promoted to Executive Director. I am currently part of a team that provides financing to municipalities like states and cities, nonprofit like universities and hospitals, and various economic development and infrastructure projects. We also provide financing to investors involved in those areas. In plain English we lend to municipalities, not for profits, and entities that engage in public projects, economic development, and infrastructure. Though this sounds like the perfect cookie cutter path; it was not. While at Columbia University, my dad got gravely ill and I had to step it.

As I hit my career stride, I had to step it up again when the business that helped provide for our family was no longer sustainable. At times the road seemed daunting. However, All Hallows was a foundation of my upbringing and it taught me many of the life skills that have guided me in my life and career such as resiliency, determination, and faith. resiliency, determination, and faith.

To all the Gaels as well as future and recent alums: Know that the years are fast but the days are long. Take advantage of each day. Don’t wait to start researching anything you are passionate or interested in. Do it now! The internet is your friend, so seek out your interests. You will either become an expert in your area or quickly learn its not what you thought you wanted. Your education doesn’t end at your high school or college graduation. Remember the interim milestones are not the final destination. Celebrate those milestones but never lose sight of the destination. Write down your goals, look at them consistently and take steps to achieve them. Build your network. A good network will serve as a medium of socialization, professional advancement, and intellectual exchange. Keep a rolodex for the best of times and the worst of times. Remember, everyone struggles and your network is your net worth.

Like many of the students at All Hallows, we feel an obligation to make it because we owe it to our family and ancestors.

All Hallows is a golden ticket - trust the ride, do the work, it will pay off exponentially. Pro Fide Et Patria!

DOMINGO RODRIGUEZ ‘08 I was born and raised in Inwood, Upper Manhattan. I graduated elementary school at Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s alma mater, St. Jude School. Growing up in a Dominican household, faith, family and hard work were values on which I was raised. After a wonderful 4 years at All Hallows, I went off to Pace University, NYC campus where I majored in Public Accounting. After completion of a 5-year BBA/MBA program, I started my career at Deloitte & Touche LLP as an external auditor in the financial services industry. While there, some of my clients included Blackstone, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and a number of smaller hedge funds, real estate and private equity firms. After 3 1/2 years at Deloitte, I transitioned to my current employer, Van Eck Associates Corporation where I have been working for the past 5 years. In my role as Global Assistant Controller, I am responsible for the preparation and filing of financial statements, as well as regulatory filings for the company. I work with a team of accountants around the world keeping the financials of the company in good standing.

I attended All Hallows because of a recommendation from a church friend of my mother’s. Her son, Noelbyn De La Rosa, Class of 2005 was a senior at AH and loved his experience. At that time my professional aspirations were to be a businessman. I aspired to be like Edmund Rice, a successful businessman who gave back to his community. At the time, I lived in a 2-bedroom rat infested shack with my parents and three sisters. We didn’t have privacy and couldn’t afford any more space. My parents worked very hard to put my sisters and I through school, but surely it would not have been possible for me to stay at All Hallows without financial assistance. I’m eternally grateful for the financial assistance received and never forget the motto, learn, earn and return.

While attending All Hallows, I was practically a member of almost every club at some point. I truly enjoyed keeping busy and growing as a student. One of the clubs that made a big impact was the Drama Club, the AH Players. I was a member for all four years and performed in 8 performances.

I was also involved with All Hallows Television as a news correspondent for three years. These opportunities allowed

me to gain comfort speaking in front of others. I eventually had no fear of speaking in public or speaking into a camera.

Communication skills are extremely important in life, and so these experiences were my favorite. At All Hallows I developed my hard work ethic by getting involved and successfully completing projects while still excelling academically.

I developed a keen ability to make friends, gain the trust of my peers and professors and manage many other things outside of school. This has been pivotal to my current success. To our current students, don’t be afraid to work hard.

Your greatest growth will come when you get outside of your comfort zone. Get involved in clubs and sports teams while at All Hallows, during your college journey, and in institutions you become part of thereafter. Challenge yourself to grow and keep tabs on those you meet along the way. Work on a 5-year plan (goals you wish to accomplish in the next 5 years). Write these goals down, keep them somewhere visible and make it a point to set reminders every few weeks.

It’s very easy to set a goal and not accomplish it because we get side tracked and forget what we’re working so hard for.

Lastly, be intentional and caring, make an impact on someone else’s life, and if you don’t know where to start, you can start with your family.

I would like to extend a huge heartfelt thank you to the All Hallows staff who work so hard to keep the school going strong and to all the alumni who continue to stay involved and give back. You’re all heroes and I admire your good intentions and your sacrifices. To our current Gaels: you are, you can and you will.

of London during my junior year focusing on film production and theater. After college, I pursued both my interests in TV production and theater, and started my post-college career at ABC’s Emmy-winning Daytime talk show, The View.

I’ve worked at Rock’n Robin Productions for the last six years and my current role is Senior Creative Producer and Development. I joined this team, founded by Robin Roberts, co-anchor of top-rated news program Good Morning America, as associate producer for a series of medical digital short documentaries for WebMD and have since been at the helm of some of the company’s most successful award-winning programming and digital series. Specifically, I’ve spearheaded 4-seasons of the digital series “Thriver Thursday” and am the lead field producer for most of our programming in the last 3 years; even through the pandemic.

GABRIEL KERR ‘08

Gabriel Kerr is a Senior Creative Producer in Development at Rock’n Robin Productions. Rock’n Robin is a full-service broadcast and digital production company that creates programming for network, cable and online audiences. Robin Roberts, television broadcaster and anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America serves as the company’s President.

As a very curious child, I remember going to All Hallows for an open house and feeling like this would be a great fit. It felt like it could really be an extension of home. I was raised by my single mom and grandmother who instilled faith in me from a very young age. I was very active in my church parish, St. Charles Borromeo in Harlem, as a youth choir member, altar server, and after school program counselor.

The faith that was instilled in me at a young age translated to my AH years.

From freshman year, I was on a partial scholarship which was immensely appreciated by my family. Not having to worry about the cost of education, which is still a burden to so many, was truly a blessing and another reason why All Hallows is such a special place. The tribe and community of people who guided and advised me throughout high school I grew up in Harlem, NY right across from the 145th street and college allowed this kid from Harlem to see his potential bridge which connects the Bronx to Manhattan. After graduat- and believe in it. My mom and my aunt are my biggest suping All Hallows, I attended Columbia University and majored porters. My friends and so many close connections keep me in Film Studies. I also studied abroad at Queen Mary University motivated and I love that my peers and I are constantly

challenging each other.

All Hallows did so much for me beyond academics. I could never forget and will forever cherish the connections I made with teachers and students. From Mr. Sullivan to Brothers Bechner (RIP), Hamilton, and Casey, to the guidance counselors like Mr. Ford & Ms. Santo and so many other teachers and administrators who all really enriched my four years at All Hallows and made the most of my time there.

My education and the beginnings of my career literally started in the All Hallows Media Arts class with Mr. Caban doing documentaries and shorts that although make me proud equally make me cringe. I’ve learned so much since then but All Hallows will forever be the foundation. Through my connection to All Hallows I am also an Emma L. Bowen Foundation alum. This program has opened so many doors for so many students like me who are interested in the media and entertainment.

During my four years of college, I had a paid summer job, mentorships, and most important the industry experience to successfully set myself up for a career post-college. I can still recall Principal Sullivan telling us during senior calculus class how this place prepares boys to become men and for jobs that may not even exist. With the rise of social media and so many other forms of communications those words could not be truer as some of my first roles and day to day work revolved around these new mediums that were just being incorporated into various companies and programming.

While at All Hallows, I was an active member of various clubs and activities for all four years at All Hallows. Freshman year, I joined the cross-country track team with Mr. Griff, and did indoor track. I took a break for the last two years from track but happy to report that I have continued to be an avid runner and keep running a part of my weekly regimen. I’ve participated in numerous half-marathons and completed the NYC marathon in 2019. Other clubs were the Music Club with Brother Hamilton, which would rehearse the music ministry for all the services AH would hold throughout the year, the Yearbook club with Mr. Damiano, and the TDF Open Doors program with Mr. Fontana, which was responsible for my first Broadway musical experience ever with Wicked! All Hallows was the beginning of opening doors to a much bigger world with all the opportunities that you can seek out with passion, determination, and faith guiding you.

Young alums and fellow Gaels, be curious, be passionate and never be afraid to make connections that go beyond your professional interests. I believe we are all here to serve, share our experiences and tell our stories to inspire others, to thrive and to succeed. It’s truly been a privilege to consider myself a member of the All Hallows community and alumni at large. For the current students who continue to walk through those doors, seize each opportunity for education and personal relationships and let that sense of community give you the wings to soar freely.

KELVIN RAMIREZ, Ph.D. Class of 1997

Dr. Kelvin Ramirez is truly the embodiment of the All Hallows motto, Learn, Earn and Return. Kelvin brings a unique perspective to the All Hallows experience. From student to alum, to collegue and mentor, its undeniable that All Hallows has played a large part in his development and the development of all the All Hallows men he’s mentored over the years.

After graduating All Hallows, he attended Stonehill College in North Easton Massachusetts. Upon earning his degree, he returned to New York and worked for a time at Sacred Heart School in the Bronx which eventually led him back to All Hallows. He joined our faculty as a member of the history department and later served as the school’s Vice Principal of Student Affairs bringing his talents and experience as a teacher and Art therapist to the young men of All Hallows. While working as both a teacher and administrator, he enrolled in a Doctoral Program and in 2014 returned to Massachusetts to take a teaching position at Lesley University. Currently. Kelvin is an Associate Professor in the Expressive Therapies Dept. at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. He teaches masters and doctoral level courses and works internationally on initiatives in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and La Romana, Dominican Republic, to name a few.

I grew up on 138th Street between Brook and Willis Avenue in the South Bronx. My family moved to 161st street and Jackson Avenue, across the street from McKinley Projects while I attended All Hallows. When applying to All Hallows, I was a typical 8th grader, excited to enter a new environment, experience new freedoms and have fun. I visited many schools, some public, lots of Catholic Private Schools but All Hallows had a unique energy. Walking the hallways on a school visit, I felt comfortable, safe, and welcomed. The teachers were funny and engaging and seemed like they wanted to be there.

However, it was different at other schools I visited. Even as a 14-year-old kid from the Bronx, I got the sense that though the teachers were dedicated to their profession they were not always happy in the environment where they taught. At All Hallows everything fell into place. My freshmen year I remember Mr. Doyle convincing me there was a pool on the roof and that I needed to rush from the locker room to the roof in three minutes as swimming was part of my gym class. I remember classes where I was asked to question information, narratives I was told, and ideas I held as “truths”. During my four years at All Hallows I made lifelong friendships with my peers and teachers. All Hallows shaped me and prepared me not only for my professional trajectory but my personal one as well.

Growing up in the South Bronx, I think about how lucky I was, in surviving some insurmountable situations. Whatever personal success I currently enjoy, comes with the awareness and pressures that I need to honor those that were not so lucky. Some of my peers that had to sacrifice their potential to support their families, or lost themselves due to unresolved trauma, and those who despite their best efforts got caught up in the streets. I would encourage current and former students to take care of their emotional and mental health. As a teenager I was unaware of how much growing up in the South Bronx shaped my mentality, my outlook of the world and myself. The emotional guard that I developed to survive were not necessarily in other settings and could, at times, be detrimental to success.

All Hallows opened many doors for me. The opportunities I was afforded and the mentorship I received from some amazing teachers is priceless. Returning to All Hallows as a teacher and Vice-Principal was a surreal experience and those years shaped my professional lens. I am fortunate to have learned so much from the students I served. They taught me to be authentic, to be compassionate, and to not take myself so seriously. I remember how much I laughed working at All Hallows, even on the tough days, where conflict was everywhere, I could always count on a student to say something that would make me laugh, and that made all the difference.

ISAAC ALCANTARA ‘07 Director of Admissions

This year Mr. Isaac Alcantara, proud alum of the class of 2007 and current Doctoral candidate at Northeastern University returns to All Hallows to serve as our Director of Admisisons.

My time at All Hallows served as the cornerstone of my development, Isaac recalled. It served me not only academically but helped to form my overall character. I was blessed to be surrounded by great teachers whose lessons transcended the classroom and impacted my life as role models worthy of admiration. I remember finding time after school to talk to our dean, Mr. Kelvin Ramirez, and holding his words with such high regard; why? Because he was once in my shoes and he knew what it was to be an All Hallows man. I am proud to say that I’m a first-generation Dominican-American and although English was not my first language it never hindered me. I was raised in a single-parent household in Washington Heights, where my wheelchair-bound mother did all she could to ensure that I had access to the American dream. Hence, my mother didn’t question sending me to All Hallows. Upon graduating from All Hallows, I began working within Apple’s Educational marketing team as a Campus Representative across the NYC Market while simultaneously pursuing my BS in Legal Studies and Political Science from Mercy College. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I went on to earn a Master’s of Science in Organizational Leadership from Nyack College as well as a 2nd Master’s of Science degree in Secondary Education from Long Island University. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in education at Northeastern University.

After spending six years at Apple, I transitioned into the field of public education, where I served as a paraprofessional, a career and community coordinator, a high school science teacher, SpEd teacher, and a Bilingual teacher. After dedicating nearly ten years to public education, I came back to serve the community that made all of my accomplishments possible, All Hallows. As I walk through the school building, I am humbled to think of how far the lessons I learned here have taken me and how this community played a role in my trajectory. Educators are often unaware of their impact; that’s the secret sauce to an All Hallows education. My years at All Hallows can be summed up as a series of moments of clarity in which my character and my perspective on life were either aligned, challenged, or expanded. However, what brought me back to All Hallows was a sense of urgency and a need to contribute to the foundational structure of a place that I consider home.

All Hallows helped me in finding my identity as a student, as a Christian, and ultimately as a man. As Director of Admissions, my hope is to help foster a sense of belonging within the All Hallows community and to ensure that the All Hallows experience can be accessed by as many qualified students as possible. I want the scope of impact of All Hallows to not only be a transformational experience for our students but also for our local community. My mission is to increase the presence of All Hallows among parochial grammar schools, charter schools, and public middle schools. Developing relationships with key stakeholders within these organizations will help us increase enrollment and ultimately increase social impact.The soul of All Hallows is its people, and with over 11,000 alum, the graduates amount to the largest group of stakeholders within our school community. What truly makes All Hallows great is the 113-year legacy that has been built with help of our faculty and staff, financial contributors, and most importantly, the students’ buy-in. Students spend four years at All Hallows and these help define their next forty years. As an alum, your support to All Hallows is essential in maintaining that legacy. There are many ways to give back to AH, whether through donations or even simply by offering your time to help provide guidance/mentorship to current students interested in entering your field of work. Brian’s career path over the past two decades has served as an excellent vehicle for bringing value to non-profit organizations seeking to increase and diversify their revenue generation. He is thrilled to join the All Hallows team of educators, administrators and faculty that are so committed to transforming the lives of these vibrant young men who are eager to leverage their All Hallows education to positively impact their communities and chart their own successful career trajectories.

He has an immense passion for the non-profit sector and enjoys being part of the transformational role that philanthropy can play in people’s lives. He has worked on local, national and international projects which has introduced him to a wide array of domestic and transatlantic donors, corporate foundations and private funding sources. Most recently, he was the Chief Development Officer of the AAI (Africa America Institute) where he led fundraising and strategy for philanthropic investment in the capacity building of African universities and in African nationals through university scholarships and vocational and technical skills-building partnerships.

Brian’s philosophy is that fundraising is the natural outcome of a well-crafted statement of need. The most effective narrative arcs are ones that amplify a non-profit’s dynamic impact and suite of accomplishments. Once a stable of donors, friends and advocates fully unpack and experience the impact of the mission, such as the strong career trajectories of All Hallows alumni, then our high school will continue to flourish philanthropically.

The campaign exists solely to ensure the future of All Hallows and its ability to positively impact and ultimately transform the lives of our graduates.

Since 1909, All Hallows has provided young men with a high-quality Catholic education. The students are well versed in the traditions of the school and have a deep connection with our Alumni.

As you well know, All Hallows is proud to share that we boast more than 10,000 alumni, all of whom are inspired by the vision of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. We are pleased to share that our college acceptances for the Class of 2021 was impressive. Columbia, Cooper Union, Georgetown and many other Tier One schools have recently welcome All Hallows students on their campuses. We are proud to note that $25 million in scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2021. Our Class of 2022 acceptances are rolling in and include Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia, Colby College and University of Notre Dame. Additionally, one of our Class of 2022 students was also admitted to Cornell’s SC Johnson School of Business (3% acceptance rate) while another was accepted to Dartmouth, as part of the QuestBridge Scholars cohort. QuestBridge seeks high school juniors who have shown outstanding academic ability despite financial challenges. The scholarship is worth over $200,000.

His acceptance to such a prestigious Ivy League institution such as Dartmouth is yet another reminder of the impact that All Hallows has on our students. None of this would be possible without the tireless philanthropic support from our friends and benefactors such as yourself.

All Hallows has historically been noted for developing the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical education of young men. It is this narrative of excellence which the 2nd Century Campaign endeavors to communicate externally to our networks and national philanthropic sources alike.

During these tumultuous times, we are reminded of all of our generous donors and their tireless dedication to the institution that they cherish so much. CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS UPDATE A generous grant from the H.W. Wilson Foundation

All Hallows has received a $15,000 grant in support of the Library: Technology and Collaborative “Co-Lab” Space Initiative which represents Phase I of the library renewal project, with a specific focus on the construction of a “Co-Lab” space in the existing library.

Collaborative spaces in schools are important because they support group projects and hands-on activities that are important for higher-level thinking. These activities more closely mimic real world situations and better prepare students for their careers and life in general. Such learning spaces empower students to work with each other to assume multiple perspectives, explore alternative solutions, and thoughtfully solve problems. The modification of the library will begin this summer.

The collaborative space will be constructed at the north end of the current library with the following characteristics: • • • • • •

The PAR Challenge embodies three identities, Power Memorial Academy, All Hallows High School, Rice High School, and their success stories in developing well-rounded, educated young men in the belief of our Founder Blessed Edmund Rice. In November of 2021, Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association and Rice High School Alumni joined forces to support the exceptional work here at All Hallows High School for future generations.

Today, the All Hallows Community would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the generous supporters of the PAR Challenge as we have raised, over $50,000, which will be generously matched by Rice alumnus, Joseph Murphy.

Mr. Murphy continues to be a catalytic force, as he was previously honored by All Hallows at the 2021 Hall of Fame Dinner for his immense philanthropic support of our mission.

This challenge exemplifies the definition of power in numbers as we ensure the mission of providing excellence in education. The spirit of Power Memorial Academy and Rice High School will continue here at All Hallows through the accomplishments of our students.

Career Pathways

We are pleased to announce a new speaker’s platform under the 2nd Century Campaign, titled, Career Pathways.

The initiative was launched in February of 2022 with the view of introducing our All Hallows student population to the impressive universe of corporate executives from across all commercial sectors.

Career Pathways was designed to infuse, inform and inspire our students with a diverse set of perspectives from what it means to be successful in the corporate world and how best to prepare yourself for these opportunities. The initiative invites both non-All Hallows alumni and alumni alike, to share their perspectives as our students envision what they may want to study at the university level. The initiative will be showcased through a series of mediums, including: • In-person lectures and Q & A sessions on campus and at corporate offices alike • Recorded video interviews • Written interviews • Mentorship opportunities based on academic or commercial sectors of interest • Internships: foster new relationships for All Hallows students to participate in internships

Career Pathways Launch On February 10, 2022, the initial Career Pathways lecture took place at All Hallows. It featured the following two executives from BNP Paribas.

Donald Sutton, Managing Director, Co-Head, Global Banking Americas, Head of North America Corporate Coverage and Adam Hamilton, Associate in Corporate Coverage at BNP Paribas, Consumer Products subsector.

Don and Adam convened the students of the 11th and 12th grades in the Commons for a 90-minute lecture and Q&A session on the financial services sector and global financial markets. The talk was initiated by Don Sutton, who shared his perspective on the state of affairs in the financial markets while also conveying his own personal story from his days as a young college student. It included his reminiscing about his family and how he was the first in his family to “wear a suit” as all of his family were in more typically blue collar and public service careers such as the trades and police and firefighters. Don candidly shared the vulnerability he experienced at being the first in his family to chart a new course and in doing so he clearly inspired our students to take advantage of leaving your comfort zone to execute your dreams.

Don then introduced his young colleague Adam, who recently joined BNP Paribas after graduating from Marquette University. Adam’s youth immediately connected with our students and his remarks perfectly coalesced with Don’s inspiring comments about challenging yourself and your own aspirations.

The students identified well with the opportunities being presented in the financial services sector and could easily envision their careers following a similar route that Adam so effectively explained through his inspired journey to BNP Paribas after completing his university degree. Adam’s comments dovetailed well as many of our All Hallows students have an interest in cryptocurrency and general financial principles from their classes in Finance here at the high school. The robust Q & A segment was filled with highly informed questions about the career path and financial analysis alike.

Time Capsule: 10 years ago this June Former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese visited All Hallows High School in June of 2012. President McAleese addressed a packed gymnasium of over 300 people here on campus. She expertly imparted her wisdom regarding global affairs and the role of Ireland in the world, while also expressing her gratitude and fondness for All Hallows as the institution represents yet another example of the strong ties that bind the vibrant relationship between the U.S. and Ireland. She served as the eighth president of Ireland from November 1997 to November 2011.

Brian spent his formative years at All Hallows; graduating in the Class of 1970. All Hallows made such an impression on him that he became the Co-Chair of the high school board and a founding member of its Foundation board.

After graduating from All Hallows he went to Marist College, where he met his wife Maryanne. After a highly successful career in the financial services sector, he was inducted into the All Hallows Hall of Fame in 2007 and also received the Tom Burke Memorial Trophy in 2017. Additionally his son Owen has joined the Board of Directors of All Hallows as he honors his Father’s fondness for the school.

Proud of his heritage, Brian loved everything Irish. He spent his third year of college abroad in Maynooth, Ireland.

Following in their father’s footsteps, both his children spent their time abroad at University College Dublin.

His wife Maryanne, daughter, Katie and son Owen have thoughtfully expressed Brian’s core values and attributes in the creation of this scholarship which acknowledges that people have different talents and skills, all which deserve to be nourished through opportunity.

Br. Anthony “Buddy” Bechner (1948-2022) Brother Anthony Patrick “Buddy” Bechner CFC passed away on January 1, 2022, at the age of 73.

Brother Bechner was a beloved faculty member and mentor to so many at All Hallows. Brother Bechner was born on July 7, 1948, in New York City.

He attended St. Jude Elementry School and Power Memorial Academy. He studied at Iona College where he received a BA degree in English, an MA from Manhattan College, and an MLS in Library Science from St. John’s University.

Brother Bechner entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers on July 5, 1966, and professed his final vows on June 27, 1974 Brother’s ministry took him to several schools including Power Memorial Academy, Bishop Kearney High School, Rochester, Catholic Memorial High School, All Hallows High School, and Iona Prep.

Brother was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Elizabeth and by his brother, Bobby.
