OPPO F3 Reviewed by Mia Carisse Barrientos

The OPPO F1s was a true game-changer in the smartphone market. Upon its release, units were selling, like hotcakes. This feat was only to be expected from a phone that captures selfies impressively and retails at a very competitive price. OPPO hopes to recreate and multiply this success with the launch of the F3.

DESIGN If you’ve seen the F3 Plus—at least in pictures— you could tell that the F3 and its Plus version are like two peas in a pod, albeit the latter just a tad bigger. And if you’ve handled an F1s, there’s going to be an overwhelming sense of déjà vu upon first glance of the F3. This is exactly what I felt when my eyes fell on the Oppo F3. There was a feeling of familiarity—the good kind, as I know I have a good phone in my hand.

The F3 is undeniably an OPPO phone with its subtle emblem on its rear, smooth finishing, and a home button on its front, all of which are marque characteristics of the Chinese brand’s roster of phones. It has the basics strategically placed on various sides of the device, with the audio jack unexpectedly at the bottom along with the speaker grille and micro USB port.

Like its bigger sibling, the F3 features a solid state fingerprint scanner upfront which doubles as its home button. This feature is flanked by two capacitive keys which are the end tasks and return function. Honestly, I was a bit sceptical about the non-sinking home button, but it just takes a few minutes to get used to it.

Among the first things I noticed about the F3 is it is a bit chunky when turned on its side. The screen, which is protected Corning Gorilla Glass, is faintly embossed making it look thick. When you put it side by side with phones in its class, however, you’ll realize that it’s not at all chunky— even thinner than some.

HARDWARE The F3 runs on a Mediatek processor with eight cores and works together with 4 GB of RAM. This combination makes it a solid mid-ranger able to handle small to intensive tasks. I ran a benchmark test on our loaner unit and it ranked loosely higher, if not same-levelled, with phones in its class. For the 3D test, it stuttered a bit. In use, I repeatedly played Dead Warfare on it and it did extremely well; moving around was smooth with no visible lags given the relatively demanding graphics of the game. Additionally, it parades a 64 GB internal storage expandable via microSD slot, which can easily accommodate thousands of photos, videos, and apps to your heart’s content.

We now move on to the bread and butter of Oppo’s F series of smartphones, the cameras. The F3 ships with three shooters, one in the back and two in the front. These are complemented by a

camera app that allows you to shoot a time-lapse, video, regular, beauty-infused, and panorama images right of the bat. Looking into its camera app features shows you more shooting modes, such as HDR, Ultra HD, color filters, GIF, double exposure, and expert. All these make it a one-stop shop for your shooting needs, eliminating the need to download extra photo-editing apps.

USER EXPERIENCE Having the OPPO F3 as a daily driver was a pleasant experience. It’s not the fanciest phone out there, but it gives you this sense of satisfaction. Running Android Marshmallow overlaid with Oppo’s own ColorOS, navigation was okay. I’m not really a fan of its layout, but what matters is there weren’t serious issues to be concerned with.

The front cameras, as expected of the selfie expert, perform really well. I noticed that its 16 MP sensor allows in a good amount of light to give you well-lit and sharp selfies no matter the setting.

The 8 MP sensor dedicated for wide-angle shots captures your surrounding impeccably, though shots aren’t as sharp as the ones taken with the former. Its sensors definitely live up to its claim to fame. The 13 MP rear camera doesn’t lose out to these two either. It renders finely detailed images, though could use a bit more punch in the color department.

Lenovo Ideapad 710S Plus Reviewed by Ren Alcantara

Laptops are the best way to get stuff done when you’re on the road. Lenovo, a leading name in the laptop computing scene, has always come up with devices that give us a great balance of price and performance, with a good serving of durability thrown in for good measure. We got to take a look at one of their latest offerings in the 710S Plus, and here’s what we think.

DESIGN This particular Ideapad is as understated as any laptop from this line. The body is plastic made to look like brushed aluminum, and is pleasantly thin and light, starting at 2.4 lbs, and 12.09 x 8.42 x .55 inches. The keys are the usual island keys we see a lot of in laptops these days, with a matte, rather than shiny finish, and backlighting. The hinge is a typical solid bar, not the watch strap affair they have on the Yoga line.

The screen is sufficiently large, framed by a large bezel top and bottom, and flush against the frame.

This is a detail we will come back to later, so put a pin in that.

HARDWARE This diminutive little device has quite a bit of muscle. With a Core i7 processor ticking at a maximum of 2.9 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 940m make it more than capable of pulling its own weight, up to and including a bit of gaming. Our model had a 500 GB SSD, which offers enough room for everything you’re likely going to need from a laptop, and helps the 46 WH battery last a goodly time. Being a newer device, it also comes equipped with a USB-C port on the right side, and for added security, and a simpler login process, you get a fingerprint scanner in an unobtrusive spot on the flat of the wrist rest.

The screen is a 13-inch, QHD+ IPS affair that’s plenty bright, and sharp enough for practically everything you need. Lenovo has even been kind enough to include JBL-branded speakers with Dolby certification, so you know you can get proper audio from it.

USER EXPERIENCE The Lenovo 710s Plus is a great little laptop. It’s light—which means it’s easy to carry around— which means you’ll actually carry it around with you. No more compromising with a tablet and folding keyboard, as long as you have a bit of space to spare! It pops into my smallest work bag with no trouble at all, and when it’s there, I hardly remember I have it.

Despite being small, thin, and light, the 710s Plus is no slouch. With Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors running the show, along with 8 GB of RAM, this is a laptop that can carry its weight and then some.

Don’t insult it by simply running word-processing programs! This is a little beast. Large spreadsheets handling plenty of data, rendering the odd video 24

or two, and even some light gaming are well within its abilities. Sure, you might not be able to bump everything up to god-level graphics detail, but it’ll give you playable frame rates on a lot of the titles available. On low settings, 1366x 768 resolution, Rise of the Tomb Raider runs at an acceptable 30FPS. Not exactly earth-shattering, but remember, it’s way smaller, lighter, and more handy than almost anything else in its segment.

Another standout thing on the device is the keyboard. It feels great, with enough travel, and a satisfying tap with each keystroke. The low profile of the device doesn’t seem to affect key travel at all, which is extremely pleasing. The same goes for the touch pad, which has just enough bite so you aren’t all over the place.

The 710S Plus also has a fingerprint scanner, so you won’t have to input your password or PIN ever again if you don’t want to. It is actually quite handy, and something I didn’t really think I wanted on my laptops again until recently. This is a flat little square, not unlike phone scanners, and not the old-style swipe-scanner we used to see on older devices.

Battery life on the 710S Plus is fantastic. I routinely got over eight hours of use at the office with it, though that time is usually only spent writing and editing articles, as well as playing music. Streaming videos might drop that down a bit, but knowing I can get a full workday of use should I forget the power brick at home is a great comfort, and priceless when you’re on the road a lot.

When it’s time to relax, you can count on the 710S Plus to perform admirably as an entertainment device. The JBL and Dolby partnership really shines here, delivering punchy audio for such a small profile. You’ll need a bit more power should you be catering to a large crowd, but for solo watching, or with a buddy, it is plenty.

VALUE Converted, this laptop will run you upwards of PHP 70k. The screen is also quite pleasant. Bright, roomy, and vivid, it’s fine enough so you won’t be squinting to try and make out details, and really quite thin, which minimizes the flapping around some larger, heavier screens seem to suffer from. The bezels are a little large, but it’s not a big deal, as it actually does add to the look, since it’s flush with the rest of the screen.

A problem I do have with it is that when closed, the keys rub on the screen. This could eventually lead to scratches on the glass. Even over the short time I had the unit, i noticed that opening the lid revealed

OnePlus 3t Reviewed by Ren Alcantara

OnePlus is now officially in the country, and the first device they have for the local market is the OnePlus 3t. Every day, the market gets more and more saturated.

Does the OnePlus 3t have what it takes to break into a leading position? We find out!

switch easy to identify likely causes this little issue. It’s no deal-breaker by any means, but if you’re waiting for an important notification, it’s something to watch out for.

Overall though, the pros win this comparison.

My issues with the phone are exceedingly minor compared to the solid performance it delivers all day.

Metal body? Check. Shiny, beveled edge? Check.

Smoothly curved glass? Check. You can tell they put a lot of effort in picking materials, and putting them together in a design that’s as pleasing to look at as to hold. Our demo unit was a nice blueish gray, done in what looks to be a very pleasing anodized finish. The front is protected by sturdy Gorilla glass, and the sides of both the glass and the metal housing are nicely curved.

Forget your fidget spinner, I’ll be fiddling with this instead, thank you very much.

This is where the phone blows the competition out of the water, current reigning flagships included. Concessions are necessary for a phone like this to hit the right price point, but crucially, OnePlus made the correct ones. This is a phone that’s frankly, overqualified for the segment, but I will be the last to complain. Apart from being an awesome phone at this moment, it should pack enough of a punch to remain viable well beyond the usual yearlong ownership cycle other phones struggle to keep up with. It’s a win in what might be the most important criteria, particularly in our market.

The power button is nicely raised off the side of the case, as is the volume rocker, and in addition to those, the phone has a very nicely knurled slider that switches profiles from audible, vibrate, and do not disturb. The knurling serves both to make it easy to manipulate, and simple to tell apart from the other buttons.

HARDWARE The OnePlus 3t has some muscle. The Snapdragon 821 Chipset and an absolutely massive 6 GB of RAM make for a device that can handle multiple instances of anything you can throw at it. The large 5.5-inch screen give you plenty of space to move around, and a fingerprint scanner keeps everything secure. The camera is an adequate 12 MP affair, with an 8 MP front-facer, and it has all the connectivity you need to get your work squared away, including the ability to take two SIM cards, so you have one less device to worry about. All told, it’s a very impressive spec sheet.

USER EXPERIENCE I am very pleased to say that the 3T might be one of my favorite devices of late. First off, it’s a real looker. The dark grey finish, hefty but not heavy weight, and solid construction all lend themselves to a device that exhude quality. It might not be the first brand on everyone’s mind, which is a real shame, because it might be one of the best-built out there.

One of my absolute favorite things on the phone though, is the impossibly fast fingerprint scanner.

This is the fingerprint scanner we hoped to have when they first became a thing. There is no appreciable lag between a tap on the non-tactile button, and the device springing to life. Waking your device from sleep is something you will be doing a lot over the course of however long you www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

will have a phone, so making that happen as quickly as possible is actually quite important in a daily driver. It’s actually so good, I now find the 0.3-second unlock on my personal phone slightly annoying.

The second thing I love about the 3t is the stellar battery life. It seems to go on for a good bit longer than a lot of my devices. While I’m usually tripping over myself for a charger for my older phone by midday, the OnePlus 3t manages to stay alive long enough to see me home. That’s quite a bit of juice.

For the duration of the review, I walked around without a powerbank in my pocket. It has been far too long since I have done that on purpose.

If you do find your battery bottomed out, the included charger and cable (the combination is apparently important) can give you upwards of 63 percent charge in half an hour. Amazing and convenient.

The third thing I appreciate is the Oxygen OS. My normal device runs vanilla Android, which is just the flavor I like. Oxygen OS is not that far removed from the stock experience, and doesn’t at all get in the way of me doing what i want to do, or slow the phone down unnecessarily.

There are a few things the phone could do better though.

The camera, while perfectly adequate, and actually noticeably better than many in the price range, has great colors, but suffers from a lack of detail around the edges. The camera app itself launches quickly, and for capturing memories, it’s perfect.

Another thing is the home button. Long presses and double taps have functions, which is great on paper, but the placement means you’ll hit it accidentally a lot of the time, triggering whatever function you’ve got going on. This can fortunately be disabled, so it’s not that big a deal.

The physical notification switch is a bit of a mixed bag. While I do appreciate being able to select do not disturb, silent, or audible, more than once, my pocket decided i shouldn’t be disturbed, flicking the switch, and cutting me off from my notifications. The same knurling that makes the

I am not physically active. I find working out at the gym aimless, and the whole burning calories part makes it feel too much like work. I need motivation to get my mind excited rather than anxious for exercise.

Recently, I got my hands on the newly launched Fitbit Alta HR, the updated version of the Alta health and fitness tracker, now with continuous heart rate tracking. Is this the key to giving me that push to take better care of myself?

DESIGN The Alta HR is designed to be an extremely low profile fitness tracker. It is 25 percent slimmer than the Charge 2. From a personal aesthetic standpoint, I prefer it slim.

The metal pebble fits almost seamlessly to the band to form one solid accessory. No one will be able to tell how the band is attached. The pebble is fitted with a scratch resistant glass face, and while the size of the watch is smaller than most trackers out there, the information is easy to read.

Like other Fitbit trackers, the Alta HR is available for different wrist widths. The band is improved with a buckle and loop locking system which makes it feel more like a watch and keeps the tracker secure around the wrist.

The standard version has a band made of rubber, available in fuchsia, black, or blue grey. A special edition is also available in gunmetal black (the pebble is colored the same), and soft pink (with a rose gold pebble). Leather bands and an all metal bangle are also available separately. Fitbit also announced that it will be working once again with various designers and design houses like Tory Burch and Public School to create even more fashionable options.

HARDWARE The continuous heart rate monitor is central to all the improvements of the tracker over its non-HR predecessor. This allows the tracker to identify what type of activity one is doing (in conjunction 26

with the range of motion) and more accurately calculate the amount of calories burned while doing it.

This technology also allows the HR to make full use of Fitbit’s new app update which includes a more comprehensive sleep tracking feature.

This feature allows users to monitor how much sleep they’re getting, with the added dimension of the duration of each stage of a sleep cycle one has gone through over the night from R.E.M.s to deep sleep.

In terms of endurance, the watch is splash-proof and scratch resistant. And despite its size, the Fitbit Alta HR can last for up to seven days of continuous use until the next charge (and it charges fast too).

and how much of it I ate, and how much of those calories I still have to burn.

I can also motivate or be motivated by friends who are in my network. Or I can motivate myself with “virtual walks” that allow me to traverse famous places. It makes the chore of exercising more fun, and it feels like I’m actually accomplishing something when it tells me that I walked around Yosemite on my way to work.

Couple these features with sleep tracking, and I have an overview of how well I’m taking care of myself. And it sure beats being judged by a personal trainer every time you snack on a doughnut amidst tears of shame. The loathing is all internal, and I intend to keep it that way.

The Alta HR would have gotten the perfect score for hardware, had it not been for its lack of location and altitude tracking which other models have.

When synced with the phone, the watch provides reminders to move based on inputted settings, gives congratulatory animations when a fitness goal is achieved, and alerts the user of messages received and incoming calls.

USER EXPERIENCE

VALUE

The folks at Fitbit acknowledge that hardware is not why people continue to use their products; it’s the app integration. And they’re right.

The standard edition costs PHP 8,495 and while that is pretty steep considering its features and how much other models of Fitbit cost, the Alta HR makes up for it with a more accurate monitoring of activity and sleep, a longer battery life, and a slimmer design.

The intuitive app allows me to create short-term and long-term fitness goals from losing weight to getting more exercise. And this virtual fitness buddy actually worked for me. The tracker monitors my activity throughout the day and how much calories I’ve burned. I would then input how much water I drank, what type of food

Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro Reviewed by Gerry Gaviola

Although I’m personally not a fan of big bulky phablets, the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro’s slim profile and superb specs made me extra curious about it. With a new attractive and sleek design, Samsung’s Galaxy C9 Pro is definitely one that can compete in the aesthetic and performance arena.

DESIGN Many are familiar with Samsung’s plastic designs, metal rims, shiny accents, and plastic rears laminated with glass. Those are gone with this Samsung phone.

While moving away from its usual aesthetic, this new, sleek design is actually an attractive one. The Galaxy C9 Pro has been, without a doubt, designed with elegance in mind.

The first noticeable difference in the Korean giant’s new design move is its change in body template: from the usual plastic design, the phablet is now wrapped in metal that comes in a smooth black or gold finish. At the back are antenna lines that blend in quite nicely. Because of its extremely thin profile, there’s some camera protrusion in this model.

At the sides are slim volume rockers and the power button for easy access. In front is the gigantic six-inch glass screen with rounded edges. Capacitive buttons are still available on either side of the home button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor. For stereo surround, the earpiece located on top also functions as a second speaker.

Samsung’s new design move was a smart one.

Unlike its other phones, this one actually feels like a premium device worth flaunting.

HARDWARE The Galaxy C9 Pro sports a 1.95 GHz Snapdragon 653 octa-core processor. Although not a flagship phone, everything thrown at it manages to run very smoothly. After all, what use is the gorgeous six-inch display if the phone doesn’t perform superbly?

A bigger screen offers more comfortable multitasking. The Galaxy C9 already succeeds in terms of its FULL HD Super Amoled display, backed up by a powerful processor, and 6 GB of RAM. Yes, 6 GB, which is really more than enough.

Right off the box, the phone comes pre-installed with productivity applications like the Microsoft Office Suite that, when put into multitasking mode, will certainly not lag.

With 64 GB of storage, exaggerated RAM, and a gorgeous display, playing games or watching your shows would be a breeze— care of the phone’s powerful hardware.

USER EXPERIENCE First thing’s first: I am not a fan of phablets because they’re not ergonomic for one hand usage. The big screen, and the spectacular specs, however, are very appealing. The real question is whether or not it is practical enough for hours of usage.

Phablets were made to better consume media, but how practical is it for day to day usage? The phone is extremely thin, coming in only 6.9 mm thick. With its thin frame and metal back design, the phone is quite difficult to grasp. Considering its large dimension, you’re going to need extra grip for which you will have to buy a case. This is unfortunate, as its metal backing is attractive.

Consuming media in landscape mode offers a pleasant experience, care of the screen and stereo speakers. Playing games is also a very enjoyable and immersive experience.

To be honest, the phone, while not a flagship, offers a flagship experience. Multitasking is good. Both the front and back camera are good. And the overall experience was pleasing, except for the problems of size and lack of grip.

VALUE Priced at almost flagship range, the phone is a good buy if you’re willing to spend for excellent performance and premium feel.

No. A model student is someone who exudes balance; someone with enough passion and drive to both learn and chase one’s dream. Reminded of her nostalgic days in school, Chloe was a sweetheart. Her humble personality lit the studio, and her story, even more.

Among the many things that Chloe learned in school was to never compromise dreams and to live a life of passion and adventure. After realizing that life’s too short to just learn from books, Chloe chose to learn and live through adventure.

Ever since she could remember, Chloe always loved to see beautiful works of art. With that, she followed her heart’s calling and decided to pursue a degree in Art History. Chloe shared that she actually did very well in school, especially since she enjoyed what her course had to offer: a deeper understanding of art and the world around her. While studying, this French girl of many interests also began modeling for her friends. As her interest in modeling grew, she decided to take a shot at becoming a model. Merging her passions, she realized that pursuing such a career would allow her to fulfil her dream as a model and, at the same time, experience the culture and the world around her.

Don’t be fooled by her sophisticated looks though. This smart woman is also game for anything. Chloe shares that she loves adventure and travel because it permits her to learn so much about beauty, art, and culture.

Be it dancing, cooking, or even riding a motor bike, Chloe is always ready to try new things.

Ford Explorer 3.5L Sport Reviewed by Ren Alcantara • Photos by Theresa Eloriaga

In the automotive world at least, comfort and performance are at loggerheads. There are a few exceptions though, and we were lucky enough to get out hands on one of them. The Ford Explorer 3.5L Sport is an amazing combination of power, creature comforts, and driveability. We’re still sad we had to give it back, but we do have a lot of fond memories of our time with it, and we’re here to share them with you, so buckle up.

DESIGN There are a few people who aren’t fans of the large profile of SUVs such as the Explorer. We aren’t those people. While it is unequivocally large, the short, wide, high-set grille, lights, and two-tone colorway make it look a lot smaller than it actually is. That doesn’t make it any less imposing though; it’s a serious vehicle that looks like it means business. 20-inch machined aluminum wheels, the shark’s fin antenna, and dual exhausts on the rear help further that point. At least on the outside, think of it as a “casual Friday” SUV, and you have the Sport version. It’s a car that wants to be seen.

HARDWARE Let’s get this out of the way. It has a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine under the hood. She’s got some real meat on her bones, and she doesn’t try to hide that fact. This beast of a power plant puts

out 370 PS at 5500 rpm, and 475 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, if you really need to give her a hot supper.

Inside, creature comforts abound. You’ve got power and automatic everything, from windows, to mirrors, seats, and even for folding the last row back. You’ve got dual-zone climate, a 230 Volt outlet in the back, front and rear cameras, two-panel moonroof, keyless starting, AND seat coolers, the presence of which I had no idea I wanted or needed until I switched them on.

Seriously. Thanks, Ford.

I’m going to stop naming creature comforts, because there are too many, and I have only so many words to do the review, but suffice to say, you are going to be spoiled rotten by this vehicle.

ABS, airbags, roll stability control, driving aids such as blind spot warnings, collision warnings,

and tire pressure monitoring all mean a safe ride each time.

USER EXPERIENCE The first thing you will appreciate when you climb your way onto the driver’s seat is just how large this SUV is. It’s tall, sure, and you’re respectably off the ground, but it’s also quite wide. It’s great practice in pushing your spatial awareness.

Fortunately, it’s supremely responsive, and quickly obliges driver input through the steering wheel—something I wasn’t expecting, but left me quite pleased. Sure, it’s no MotoGP bike, but it certainly doesn’t feel like the tank it is.

The second thing you notice is the sense of urgency with which this behemoth of an SUV surges forward at the application of a little throttle. I get around the city on a sport-touring motorcycle, and I can say that the sense of

acceleration is eerily similar on the Explorer as it is on my bike. That wouldn’t be too strange, until you realize that the SUV’s weight is easily several times the bike’s. Punch it, and you’re suddenly blasting through an overtake, no hesitation, downshifting, or waiting required. It’s actually a bit frightening the first time you gas it like that.

Once you’re over the initial rush of having all that power on tap, you’ll begin to appreciate the comforts the Explorer affords. First off, you can remotely start the engine. Why? Because we live in the tropics. When you’re within range, you can fire her up, get the cabin nice and cold, and pop right in, ready to drive off. Power adjustments for seat height, distance, and how far your back reclines, as well as movable lumbar support make long drives totally painless. The steering wheel is likewise power-adjustable, and moves with the touch of a finger. Should you need to get in there to drive properly, shutting the engine down will make the seat move back, aiding in egress.

There are seat coolers. Parking in the heat, or driving for a long time can get uncomfortable for the seat of your pants. This alleviates that splendidly. Should you be feeling a little hot around the butt, hit the button, and you’re golden. Couple that with a devoted Max A/C button, and you’re going to have the ride of your life.

This SUV is also extremely smart. Sync allows for surprisingly accurate voice commands, letting you adjust the throttle, dial numbers, and control your music all hands-free (though steering wheel controls are available for the old-school among us). This lets you focus on driving, and keeps you out of trouble. Multiple gauge displays give you

pertinent info, such as audio details, a compass, as well as fuel economy numbers, all of which are done in a simple, easy-to-read format, so you don’t get distracted. This allows you to monitor important details on vehicle performance, and keeps you from having to guess if your tire is flat or your oil temp is getting high. Integration is smooth, simple, and intuitive, which really is what makes the whole smart thing worth it.

During my time with the Explorer, we had an office trip planned, and that involved loading a lot of things into the vehicle. The back opens automatically, and the seats fold and stow with the touch of a button, so loading and re-configuring the back was something I actually looked forward to. And if space is a concern, by my estimation, folding the two rows of seats created enough room to fit a decent-sized mattress. Take that info as you will: all I’m saying is that this is a very roomy vehicle.

VALUE This is something of a mixed bag. While it really offers absurd levels of comfort, it’s clearly not for everyone. Coming in at a shade under PHP 4M, this is for people who really want the extras, and that makes it worth it. If you’re the type to pay that much, then the 4.7 km/L fuel economy shouldn’t bother you either. As for myself, I think it might be a little too much. The performance really does make me want to reconsider though.

Bottomline: If this fits your budget, you will definitely not regret it. Buy it to drive it yourself, and you’ll be very happy.

The new Chevrolet Sail, introduced in the 12th Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) last April, is the American brand’s entry into the subcompact sedan segment. We had a test unit for several days, and took it up for a spin to cool Tagaytay. Let’s see how it fared.

DESIGN There is no mistaking the signature golden bowtie emblem nor the distinctive dual port black grille on the nose of the Chevrolet Sail. The front is characterized by swept back headlights and builtin fog lamps. A black B-pillar on the LTZ gives an unbroken side profile that complements the bold character lines. This is echoed in the 16-inch gun metal alloy wheels for a more aggressive look.

functions, useful for quickly dissipating heat and allowing fresh air into the cabin.

The color scheme is carried into the jet black interior, with touches of chrome and graphite silver metallic trim. Instead of a full armrest console, the Sail only has cupholders behind the gear stick.

The brochure lists seven available colors: peppy orange, blue sky, synacuse, black met kettle, bright white solid, galaxy silver, and summit

white. The official press material points out that the Sail will keep its luster over time due to 107 high-standard painting and five anti-corrosion exterior coating processes with nine anticorrosion layers.

HARDWARE This premium variant is powered by a 1.5-liter DOHC D-VVT engine that delivers 108.8 PS at 6,000 rpm, and 141 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

The suspension system features a McPherson strut type with stabilizer bar in front, and a rear torsion beam nonindependent suspension. Brakes are front discs and rear drums.

The infotainment system consists of a nine-inch HD touch screen display and a four-speaker audio system. It runs on the Android operating system and has built-in Waze, Spotify, and Google Play Store apps. Bluetooth connectivity allows audio streaming as well as smartphone integration. Controls are built into the steering wheel for safe and convenient access.

Safety equipment include three-point ELR seatbelts, driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, high-mount stop lamp, child locks, ISOFIX child restraints, speed sensing door locks, anti-theft alarm system, driver seatbelt reminder, and rear parking assist sensors.

USER EXPERIENCE We drove the Chevrolet Sail 1.5 LTZ AT up to Tagaytay for our annual summer outing with a full load of four passengers. The spacious interior ensured that everyone had enough head and leg room to be comfortable the entire trip.

Also notable was the large trunk compartment which easily accommodated all our overnight

bags plus the extra cargo we took on after hitting the fruit stands on our way down.

On the hilly terrain of Tagaytay, the Sail gamely took on some steep inclines without feeling

underpowered, thanks to its 140 Nm of pulling power. Downhills were also manageable with the active select manual override for the automatic transmission.

We thoroughly enjoyed the multimedia infotainment system, particularly since it had our favorite apps—Waze for navigation, and Spotify for music streaming—built-in. No worries about distracted driving either, as the driver could answer his phone via Bluetooth hands-free connectivity.

Possibly the only thing that really weirded us out was the awkward placement of the power window buttons, which were located under the aircon controls on the center panel. This means only the driver or the front passenger had access to the buttons to open or close the car windows.

VALUE The most premium variant of the Chevrolet Sail, the 1.5 LTZ AT, is priced very competitively at PHP 858,888. The warranty coverage of five years or 100,000 kms (whichever comes first) assures worry-free ownership for Sail buyers. Another layer of assurance is the automatic enrolment in 24/7 emergency roadside support three years, with the option to renew thereafter.

We once again find ourselves behind the wheel of Honda’s highly successful seven-seater BR-V, and this time, we get to do an in-depth review. I have to say, we can’t seem to get tired of taking this baby out for a spin.

DESIGN Drivers who are no stranger to Honda’s line-up might see the BR-V as a sportier version of the Mobilio. This is more apparent on the inside, from the steering wheel all the way to the backseat.

Sharing design DNA in this case isn’t a bad thing. It keeps the Mobilio interior’s comfort and practicality, and puts it into a fiercer outer shell.

The BR-V has sportier lines, a robust grille design, higher ground clearance (201 mm), and 16-inch alloy wheels. It’s a solid-looking SUV.

HARDWARE The BR-V runs on a 1.5-liter, single overhead camshaft, i-VTEC four-cylinder engine with

16 valves, similar to what you would find in a Mobilio or a City. It produces 120 PS of power at 6,600 rpm and a maximum 145 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. It is Euro 4 emissions rating-certified, coupled with a fuel tank that’s able to hold 42 liters of petrol.

For creature comforts, the BR-V’s offerings are standard. You have adjustable seats, strong airconditioning, and a good amount of slots and compartments to hold stuff in. It has a seven-inch touch screen console for its four-speaker audio system. As the name suggests, only Navi variants of the SUV have GPS capabilities. The audio system supports Bluetooth, USB, and auxiliary connections.

The engine works with Honda’s Earth Dreams continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology which automatically adjusts the transmission into very precise gears depending on the speed and direction of the vehicle, and on the surface it is driving on.

USER EXPERIENCE

The BR-V’s suspension is a combination of a MacPherson strut for the front and a torsion beam for the rear. The brakes, on the other hand,

on the weekend goes out of town for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle. And for what it was designed for, it’s quite perfect.

Since the car is pretty much a “Mobilio Sport,” the interior feels the same, meaning it has ample leg room in the first two rows, but the third may feel somewhat cramped—best to leave those seats for the kiddies. Luggage space is pretty decent and will be enough for a few days away.

As I’ve said before, I am a fan of CVT, especially Honda’s version of it. While classicists find it not particularly exciting, I see its “basic-ness” as a good thing. It’s an everyday SUV—and you would want the comfort and efficiency of a CVT as you ply the rage-inducing Metro Manila on a rush hour.

With the SUV’s intuitive transmission and excellent handling, the BR-V can quickly transition from the shortdistance, turtle-paced streets of Metro Manila to the high and winding roads of say, Tagaytay or Tanay. And even with the suspension setup, hitting bumps doesn’t feel as stiff as one would expect from a torsion beam.

Don’t expect to win any races on a full load while going up an incline, though. But then again, this wasn’t meant for a mid-life crisis rush of

adrenaline. It’s a good, versatile family car that coasts comfortably through life. What a vision.

VALUE Starting at below a million bucks (PHP 989,000 for the 1.5 S CVT), the BR-V is an extremely affordable SUV that carries Honda’s mark of quality. People looking for a nice family car could not do much better than this.

Bottomline: Like a good pint of lager, we find more and more good things to say about the BR-V after each sip. Third time’s the charm indeed.

Definitely a conversation starter and one of the most unique car brands available in the Philippine market, many still haven’t heard about the Korean brand, Ssangyong. For a brand that has yet to make a familiar name, Ssangyong’s Tivoli EXG is definitely one that can compete.

DESIGN Ever heard of the Korean car brand, Ssangyong?

Many haven’t. A quick Google image search turns up photos of the bizarre looking Ssangyong Rodius, and other cars with daring designs that could trigger an “Oh... That car” response.

Notorious for experimenting with outlandish designs, Ssangyong has gone a different design route with much more attractive ones in its newest cars. That isn’t to say that Ssangyong strayed away from its utilitarian heritage. The Tivoli features a functional design with an aesthetic that actually works.

Without sacrificing its trademark of unique designs, Ssangyong’s Tivoli still sports an

unusually aggressive look albeit now an attractive one. Its design is anything but boring. The metal exterior is sculpted with accents and lines that accentuate a sporty look appropriate for a crossover car. The overall architecture is derived from nature: there’s rhythmical lines in its body; the slim, wide grille; the trapezoidal LED headlights near its front fog lights; and the floating roof design which, by the way, provides perfect peripheral vision.

Much of the attractive styling is due to its strong and aggressive theme. The nose of the Tivoli features sculpted lines also seen in the car’s muscular front and rear wheel housings. To add to that is the aggressive rear bumper and the 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Beyond the muscular look is balance, achieved by the addition of the floating

glass roof design and the centrally-mounted rear fog lamp.

When it comes to the interior, all I can say is that it is both comfortable and classy. Its D-cut steering wheel is comfortable to hold on long drives and the leather wrapped seats give it a luxurious feel.

The only caveat? If you’re a back passenger and wish to store papers, books, or whatnot, in the back of the front seats, you won’t really be able to, not securely at least. The back portion of the seats only have garters in place of the usual small pouches.

HARDWARE Powering the Tivoli is the 1.6-liter XGI160 gasoline engine that’s rated at 128 PS. It has 150 Nm of

torque that’s available at 4,000 rpm. Latest engine technologies such as the dual variable valve timing, and an exhaust layout that minimizes exhaust gas interference enhance the Tivoli’s engine response making it extra efficient. By efficient, I mean really efficient. Personally attesting to its performance, we drove the car to Tagaytay from Quezon City consuming only two bars of gas. Highly efficient and quiet running is what the Tivoli’s engine is. A six-speed automatic transmission is equipped in this car that’s full of surprises.

For entertainment, there’s the seven-inch Android based HD monitor that is also Bluetooth capable.

For navigation, Waze is preinstalled in the system.

Whether it be for navigation or keeping the passengers entertained, the HD monitor doesn’t fail in providing easy access.

USER EXPERIENCE I’ve never driven a Tivoli nor have I closely examined one before this review, and I have to say, it’s a car full of surprises. For starters, the car, the brand, and its look is very unique; so unique that it merited curious gazes whenever we took it out for a drive. The driving experience was a pleasurable one too.

Maneuvering the Tivoli felt very light and smooth.

On flat roads, the shifts in the transmission were

quite seamless, assuring me of a swift overtake when needed. However, on sloped roads, I found the the Tivoli to be slightly inconsistent as it took a while to pick up. At times it would even jolt.

Bottomline is, for flat roads with or without the presence of traffic, the Tivoli will swiftly glide through the streets until a slope is met.

The Tivoli EXG model offers three driving settings: Normal, Comfort, and Sport. For Philippine streets that greatly vary in traffic depending on the time, the Comfort setting would be best. When out of town, or without traffic, the Sport mode would be a good change especially since it tightens up the electric power steering wheel for a more enthusiastic and professional driving style.

Space is not an issue: the Tivoli has plenty for a five-seater crossover. The back compartment packs enough space for light to medium loads.

The entertainment system is superb. Waze is readily available on the LCD screen for navigation (though it occasionally stops music playback whenever there is a switch in modes) and several speakers make sound tripping a boredom killer.

VALUE The 1.6 Tivoli EXG variant retails for PHP 945,000.

For the quality of its efficient engine as well as its unique interior and exterior design, the price is certainly acceptable. If you want to drive one of the most unique brands available without spending a luxurious amount, then the Tivoli is for you.

Suzuki holds GSX-R1000R Invitational Test Drive

The GSX-R1000R Superbikes, fresh from the 11th IR Bike Fest and Trade Show, are back in the spotlight, and this time, not just for show.

Flown in from Australia after being tested by Team Suzuki Ecstar, the two sixth-generation GSX-R bikes were brought to the Clark International Speedway to be tested out by Philippine Superbikes Champion Miguel Bichara and MotoIR pioneer Anthony Roman.

The Philippines is the first ASEAN nation to have representatives test ride the new GSX-R on home soil.

The opening of the training center was formalized with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement by YMPH president Toru Osugi and TESDA director general secretary Guiling Mamondiong.

The training center in Taguig City aims to educate the out-of-school youth and the marginalized, particularly women. YMPH will provide motorcycles and equipment for the training center to help with their education.

A national certificate will be given to each person who completes the vocational course and will be assisted in becoming Yamaha Service Center trainees.

Carmudi Participates in the 7th ASEAN Automobile Safety Forum Aligned with its advocacy to promote road safety, leading car portal Carmudi recently joined the 7th Asean Automobile Safety Forum held at the Berjaya Makati Hotel.

The event aims to tackle the region’s vehicle safety features and its effects on the market.

Cholo Syquia, chief operating officer of Carmudi Philippines joined notable officials from ASEANNew Car Assessment Program (NCAP), Automobile Association Philippines (AAP), as well as various stakeholders at the event.

Since Carmudi’s business engaged in online car buying and selling, the company presented technology’s role in influencing consumer use and purchasing behavior.

Syquia noted that the Philippines, on average, has 119 million mobile phone subscriptions and Filipinos spend 3.5 hours on mobile, and 5.2 hours on desktop and tablet.

“The availability of online data increases general consumer awareness towards vehicle safety. Using technologies such as the Internet, we may now

educate both consumers and end-users towards both availability of safety features and its proper utilization,” said Syquia.

In a research made by Carmudi Global, it was revealed that the Asian region welcomed substantial amount of innovation towards vehicle safety features over the years.

“Over the past decade, the booming automotive industry in Asia has seen a considerable amount of change and innovation. In less than ten years, the process of car buying has been completely revolutionized, with online searching taking precedence over traditional methods,” explained Syquia.

Apple has been gearing up for its advocacy that seeks to make its iPhones out of 100 percent recycled material. Ambitious as it sounds, the tech giant aims to eventually stop mining. We’ve already seen apple open its 175-acre headquarters that run on 100 percent renewable energy last April, so it isn’t a surprise that Apple is very well capable of walking their talk when it comes to green technology projects.

Rarely is it known that the earth’s most precious metals are actually found it our everyday gadgets.

Once these gadgets reach the end of their life, they either get thrown in the trash, become forgotten at the basement, or get shipped to developing countries to be resold. In other words, they become e-waste. Apart from basically just becoming trash, there is also that issue of devices becoming hazardous once they age and its batteries and other parts start to leak. To remedy this wasteful loop in the production line, Apple has debuted its recycling machine, Liam.

Apple wants to prove that they, as technology company, are responsible enough to build new products while minimizing waste. In Apple’s 2017

environmental responsibility report, the tech giant stated that they have already started building new devices made out of recycled parts. In fact, some aluminum bodies of the Mac Mini computers actually now come from reclaimed aluminum parts of iPhones.

So how does Liam work? Liam consists 29 freestanding robotic arms that are tasked to do the opposite of what assembly line robots do; Liam’s arms work to disassemble iPhones. The salvageable components that are extracted from iPhones are then sorted out and the eventually melted out in other to sculpt new parts or bodies to be used in future products.

It is important to take note that there’s definitely other companies that have been doing their very own share of recycling. However, merely shredding metals leave off a lot of waste that could’ve been recycled. Liam efficiently disassembles iPhone parts so that each and every single component gets recycled. With already two Liam machines, Apple is moving to further its green technology endeavors.

New York is a great place to visit whatever time of the year. It’s the city that never sleeps so there is always something to do 24/7. Even if it is your first time in New York, the streets just look familiar because you’ve seen a lot of them on TV and in movies.

You have to stay at least one whole week, and even then, there will still be places and activities that will have to wait until your next visit; there are just so many things to see and do in the Big Apple.

Here’s a tip: if you are flexible with the dates, hotel rates in Manhattan can be quite reasonable.

Check the rates online first before you finalize your travel dates to score lower costs of admission for the same rooms, for some days are cheaper, depending on their occupancy.

When planning a trip to New York you have to balance your stay around these five activities: 68

sight-seeing, watching live shows, visit museums, shopping and eating. And it has to be said: you need to carefully track where and how you spend your money for New York can be quite expensive if you don’t watch out.

If you’re a movie or TV buff, you may want to visit all of the locations from your favorite movies. But you have to be realistic in making your plans for I assure you, you cannot see all of the famous sites in just one visit.

Sightseeing

Sightseeing in New York can be cheap if you are willing to take the subway or walk a lot. If you don’t want to walk, take the hop-on hop-off bus so you see more of the New York streets, but be ready to get stuck in traffic quite a lot.

NYC is just full of famous buildings and places: many of which you’ve seen on TV. You’d want to see them up close—and many of them you can see for free—Times Square, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, the new One World Trade Center and the 911 Memorial, Central Park, etc.

You must also visit The American Museum of Natural History, they have the best exhibits of Dinosaurs, pre-historic animal fossils, Mammals of North America and of Africa, and there’s even a 94-foot Fiberglass replica of a female Blue Whale floating above the Hall of Ocean Life. The Center of Earth and Space is also very interesting for those interested in the planets, meteors, and space exploration.

New York museums have some of the best art in the world: The Metropolitan Museum, the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) and the Guggenheim Museum. What is great about these museums is that their exhibits are not as overwhelming as

Chocolate lovers should not miss stopping by the M&M and Hershey’s stores across each other on Broadway at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 48th street.

Food trip

New York is a true melting pot, so if you’re adventurous, you can try food from around the world. But you have to get a New York hotdog and pretzel from a street vendor just for the experience. One of the most popular street foods in Manhattan these days is The Halal Guys—they have several food carts along 53rd street on both sides of the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue), but at lunch time, there are still very long lines—their gyros and falafels are great.

Rest assured that even if you eat a lot, you won’t gain too much weight if you opt to walk while exploring the Big Apple. You will not only see more, but feel like you’re a New Yorker—although you have to walk fast if you want to be a true New Yorker for only tourists walk slow over there.

Layers of pork are rendered savory, sweet and tender, then topped with lettuce, cucumber, and pickled carrots and daikon (do chua) in a six-inch Vietnamese–style baguette. The bread for me was the best part of the whole sandwich. It was crisp on the outside with the right amount of bite on the inside. The accoutrements were all very fresh, and the pickled vegetables did not lose their vibrancy with the pickling.

Next, I order the goi cuon—fresh spring rolls with the works—lean pork, a bit of shrimp, vermicelli or bun, lettuce, cilantro, carrots, daikon, and cucumber. It’s a nice carb-y yet light and refreshing substitute to our lumpiang sariwa. The rolls are assembled neatly, with each ingredient layered distinctly as seen through the translucent rice paper. It is served with a thick and sweet peanut sauce.

Over the years, Marikina has become a surprise in the local food scene, with good restaurants opening up sporadically across the mostly suburban city. One such establishment is Ca Phe Saigon in the San Roque neighborhood, just a stone’s throw away from the R-6 Marikina–Infanta Highway.

Ca Phe Saigon is not a new restaurant; on the contrary, it’s been around for quite some time, but it has eluded many visitors who are not familiar with the Eastern parts of Metro Manila. And those who try to search for its location on Google Maps or Waze (found there as “Sweet Apple Creations”) will find themselves circling the block a few times because of a patchy GPS and data reception.

Outside, the restaurant is literally a home, save for the well-lit sign in the middle of the otherwise dim Red Cedar Street, and the more-than-usual number of veranda furniture. The decorations are quaint—endearingly kitschy—with trinkets from Vietnam and pictures of notable guests strewn across the walls. Vietnamese groceries are on display, mostly for sale, like instant pho and dried beef.

corridor, while a bar is propped up on the other side for communal seating. The open air options offer more space, as long as one is willing to sit through a meal with people intermittently popping out to smoke a fag. Well, it does add a bit of authenticity to the meal, I think, people smoking. Some time ago, the owners added an extra room for seating on the other end of the house-cum-restaurant. It’s good for large groups.

The restaurant offers authentic Vietnamese meals on the cheap, and I do mean cheap.

Food here costs around PHP 100 to 200 a plate.

And the serving sizes for these price points are surprisingly good.

And as if the amount of carbohydrates I consumed wasn’t enough, I order the classic pho ga. The regular version is typical marketplace fare: flat rice noodles topped with caramelized shallots, scallions, and other greens, with bits of shredded chicken scattered all over. The pho is also available “special” which promises more ingredients and a larger helping.

Everything in the bowl was good, but the star, really, was the broth. Chicken carcass is simmered with onions, fish sauce, and other flavorings, giving it that signature murk in an otherwise clear fluid. I just wish they had fresh herbs like mint and basil, and mung sprouts to mix into the pho, but they didn’t.

Ca Phe Saigon also offers rice meals and other classic Vietnamese mains and starters like bun cha, cha gio, and goi bap cai. A variety of Vietnamese desserts, and Western baked goods are on offer, including baguettes to take home.

For people who like coffee, the authentic ca phe sua da is a must, brewed on the spot and served the traditional way. It is also available iced (ca phe da).

Overall, the meal was enjoyable, having pitfalls due in part perhaps, to the competitive pricing.

Flavors are authentic and were generally good. Plus, it does feel great to have a decent Vietnamese meal for less than the price of a single plate of food in the restaurant’s Makati contemporaries.

Dr. Levi John Interviewed by Mia Carisse Barrientos

The world of beauty is a female-dominated industry. Although widely regarded as a profession for women, there are a few brilliant men who dare to challenge the norm. One of them is Doctor Levi John Lansangan, medical director of DrShimmian Aesthetics Center.

Dr. Levi started his medical journey as an ears, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. On his fourth year of residency, he would perform surgeries on patients who suffer from facial trauma or carcinoma of the face and neck. These surgical procedures are bound to leave lasting marks on patients, disfiguration even.

Due to these visible scars, patients are at the risk of developing depression. Being exposed to this situation on a regular basis sparked the desire in Dr. Levi to do something more than just performing surgeries on these patients. He was inspired to restore the confidence of his patients by improving their appearance.

This vision was furthered when he travelled to South Korea to attend an ENT congress. Life sure has a funny way of pushing you toward your destined path. It became clear for Dr. Levi when at the venue of the ENT congress, a medical aesthetics conference happened to be simultaneously taking place. Dr. Levi cheerily recollected, instead of going towards his original travel agenda, he waltzed right into the latter.

Now with eyes opened to the world of beauty, Dr. Levi made a pact with himself to master the profession once he finished his residency. Sure enough, he came back to South Korea, attended www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

a good fellowship in facial plastic and cosmetic surgery, and was mentored by one of Korea’s best facial reconstruction surgeons.

New expertise under his belt, Dr. Levi went back to Manila and started on his journey of helping make people the best version of themselves.

As a result of his determination and hard work, DrShimmian Aesthetics Center was established in 2005 (formerly Shimmian Manila).

It wasn’t a bed of roses, Dr. Levi shared. There were, and still are, lots challenges to overcome.

Starting a cosmetics surgery business in a rather conservative country is already a challenge in itself. Limiting factors such as fear of judgement, resource, and disapproval from loved ones also abound in our culture. There would also be unrealistic expectations, but at the end of the day, trust has to go both ways. Doctors aren’t magicians after all. Amidst all these, Dr. Levi remained optimistic.

These boulders began to crumble as years went by. The beauty business is booming and Filipinos are becoming more and more open to cosmetic enhancement procedures. In this world, everybody wants to become beautiful. Just do a quick browse on your social media feeds and you’ll see the magnitude of the beauty industry

here in the Philippines. DrShimmian gets an average of 50 to 100 cosmetic surgery bookings per month. He further shared that gender ratio is half and half.

Dr. Levi is now one of the most sought after plastic and cosmetic surgeons in the country. When it comes to services offered in DrShimmian, Dr. Levi doesn’t do hard sell. Patients come to him knowing what they want to get fixed. However, he will make suggestions on what procedure should be done according to the patient’s willingness.

A specialist in rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery, Dr. Levi still attends workshops out of the country to learn new techniques and to improve his craft. He’s also one of the pioneers in gore-tex rhinoplasty in the country.

When asked what’s down the pipeline for his clinic, the doctor shared his plans of increasing DrShimmian’s presence by opening branches in key cities such as Cebu and Davao. With this plan of expansion, he plans to hire and mentor some doctors to handle provincial branches.

DrShimmian Aesthetics Center currently has three branches: SM Southmall, Medical Plaza Ortigas, and SM Pampanga. Its fourth branch in Arnaiz Ave., Makati will be opening soon.

If you are a direction noob, however, navigating the winding streets of Metro Manila can be as dreadful as losing your way in a non-English-speaking country, without internet connection. Good news! The heavens have heard the woes of people with no sense of direction and has brought upon this Earth the app Sakay.ph.

This app, available on iOS, Android, and via a web browser, helps you commute confidently no matter where you’re headed. According to the website, the original version of Sakay.ph was created by two brilliant programmers as a small side project. The app was then used as an entry to the Philippine Transit App Challenge, a local hackathon in 2013 where it bagged the Open Community Award.

Currently, Sakay.ph is handled and is being further improved by software development and design firm By Implication. With a user-friendly interface and mobile app to boot, Sakay.ph has helped over 500,000 users get around Manila without a hitch through easy to follow transit directions.

Sakay.ph offers a similar experience to community based navigation platforms such as Waze and

Google Maps. Why choose this app? This service is specially customized to better serve everyday commuters. Within its mobile application, you can choose your preferred modes of transit and it will conveniently tailor choices of routes to follow. If you’re comfortable in taking the bus, just quickly switch the bus toggle; you could do the same for the jeep, premium and p2p bus, train, UV express, E-jeep, and ferry modes of transit.

Like other navigation apps, you are to enter your point of origin and destination, and time and date of departure (optional). Another pleasant feature of this app is that it shows you the average cost for every available route, along with its breakdown, as you scroll through. This lets you prepare the fare in advance so you won’t panic mid-commute. It also has a report incident feature to help warn commuters of traffic jams and other incidents.

If you are a traditional commuter, you can type in details of your trip on its website (namesake) and easily print your chosen route. Additionally, the app will soon be rolling out a polished version of its SMS service so you can get to your destination even without internet connection—or a smartphone.

However, they are working on expanding their reach. The app has also recently tied up with ride-hailing app Uber to make commuting even easier. But if you’re keen on keeping your transportation budget on the low, public transit is the way to go.
