GABRIELLE VAN NURDEN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT Over the past three years I have devoted the majority of my time to this program, which has consisted of a roller coaster of projects and experiences. I started out with a project this semester that enabled me to explore sustainable architecture, which led to then taking a deeper dive into stretching the boundaries of reuse and recycling in structural design. I am more positive than ever that the design field is where I belong. I can’t express how thrilled I am to continue my studies and eventually find a firm to help guide me and expand my capabilities.

I worked with Jacob Leuck on this partner project at the end of our sophomore year. We were asked to design a building to house a few traveling chefs at once, allowing them to collaborate and demonstrate their skills to a new community. The concept challenges the idea of public and private space, encouraging the chefs to choose what atmosphere they would like for the specific meal.

The chefs are able to convey their desired atmosphere for the menu by manipulating the physical elements of the dining room.

The relationship between the movable panels and the exterior shell creates an exclusive experience for each group of guests by questioning the idea of public and private space.

5 The furniture in the dining room is completely movable, as well as the panels dividing up the space and outlining the central stair. The second floor is used for housing the chefs, and incorporates the grid system from above and below.

P1 YEAR 3 SEMESTER 1 BREAKING DOWN ARCHITECTURE This was the first group project of the year. I collaborated with London Forsberg and Jacob Leuck on this shelter. We were given the prompt of creating a short term structure that would be able to be used for a small time period, and leave the site better than it was before.

Our concept was that the structure would eventually decompose on its own. This is done by using biodegradable materials such as light canvas and rope, along with vegetation on the ground and hanging along the canvas to assist in breaking down the materials.

MATERIAL ORGANIZATION

Over the course of a few months, nature would take over and the plant life would thrive. The area would still be capable of housing activity, but perhaps be used differently than it was in the beginning weeks. After decomposition the concrete columns that held up the canvas would remain, and provide opportunity for the structure to be reformed.

The focus of this project is to increase opportunity for community engagement as much as possible while creating a safe and nurturing learning space for kids. This is accomplished by engaging the site and sinking the school into the ground. There are six different wings inside the school, all organized to best provide for what the community needs.

The six wings are set at different ground heights, with the classroom sectors sunk the lowest. The wings also provide a separation between the community activities and school learning environments.

On the exterior of the building, the ground planes surrounding the school rise to cover the interior spaces, creating an engaged roof area. This area encourages people to utilize the entire space above the sunken building, this can host the public after school hours, or the students during the school day.

We had the unique opportunity of speaking to the children at the current Paddock Elementary School about our projects to which they said: “I LOVE THE ROOF”, “Could we add some other kind of way to get off the roof like a rock wall in the front?”, and “So we can look at the sky while we’re in the school?”. This project is a finalist for the BWBR Student Scholarship, and it has taught me so much about representing my work.

Section A

The projects preceding this semester taught us how to think about volumetric spaces. This includes studying how light enters different parts of the building, as well as figuring out how the mass of the structure could be as prominent as possible. I decided to use as little windows as possible, then wrapped the building in a shell of glass and slotted metal. This enabled natural light to enter the space, and give the building some transparency at different angles from the interior and exterior.

I was also pushed to spend as much time as possible on the plan, section, and isometric drawings of this model. Since the project did not have a physical model, I spent my time on the detail and clarity of renders and drawings. I figured out how to properly display my work, and had fun learning about the detail and dedication it takes to create something as simple as a museum. This project opened my eyes to a new world of modeling, and taught me that there is always something that could be changed, and made better.

P1 YEAR 2 SEMESTER 2 MODELING THE SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT BUILDING This project was almost completely hands-on, and I turned out really enjoying myself. We were tasked with physically modeling a few components of a structure of our choice. I chose the Scottish Parliament Building, which was designed

by Architect Enric Miralles before he died of a brain tumor in 2000, four years before the project’s completion. Enric Miralles was inspired by the flowing landscape of Scotland to design this campus of structures. He also included details from upturned boats and the Scottish Celtic Cross in the ceiling impressions.

I modeled out four detailed components of this design.

The window shades, which were made of many different materials and patterns. The personal office seating, which popped out from the exterior facade, creating an intriguing profile for the building, and an incredible interior space. I chose to model both the exterior and interior perspective, with the physical models being able to slide onto each other to represent how they work together.

The final piece I selected was the overhead structure inside the large skylights in the main building. This gives a slight ode to the Celtic Cross, and screams for attention from the interior viewers.
