Research Question
How can at-risk communities receive comprehensive support and services for their immediate needs while also eliminating stigma attached to requiring these resources?
F O O D
Poverty is often linked with obesity and malnourishment because of the food available at food pantries.
Healthier food options, along with fresh produce, diminish these effects.
Statement
Providing decentralized services to at-risk families within the community presents challenges due to lack of transportation, social discomfort, time commitment, and coordination of care and services. The creation of a centralized community resource center, where clients can receive necessary services in one location, would alleviate these stressors.

Mei is a 21-year-old, single mom, who has a three-year-old son. She was finishing high school when she found out she was pregnant. She decided to put off going to college to find a job to support her son. Now, she wants to apply for college to get a degree in marketing, but isn’t sure how to go about doing that. Mei uses the daycare in the center for her son, while she works with employees in the resource offices. They provide her with support and information by reviewing her applications and going over next steps.
Wayne is a 32-year-old father who lives with his extended family. Although he works long hours every day to support his family, he has found that buying healthy food options for his family can get too expensive. Wayne loves bringing his family to the farmer’s market to learn about local fruits and vegetables, and how to cook healthy meals with each of them.

Mateo is a 13-year-old boy who attends public school in the community. His school doesn’t offer many afterschool programs so he likes to come to the community center to participate in recreational and other activities occurring daily.
