NOTE FROM THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Why Here? Why Now? We moved to Stamford, CT when I was in third grade and my mother almost immediately took me to Broadway to see A Chorus Line. Even as a non-theatrical civilian, my mother knew that seeing A Chorus Line was essential viewing. In 1992, I spent a summer immersing myself in Joe Papp’s personal story. I attended Shakespeare in the Park productions and read Helen Epstein’s book, Joe Photo Magnus Stark Papp: An American Life – which I have viewed ever since as a personal bible. Joe Papp’s philosophical tenant of “theatre for all” drives the core of my own theatre practice. It is a message that can’t be echoed strongly or loudly enough – especially at this unprecedented juncture in the zeitgeist of the human experience.

The ideal theatre is a theatre that is free like the public library – where 75 cents is even too expensive for a ticket. One bold financial visionary can make such a thing possible here in Miami or anywhere – though I believe there is validity in a more democratic approach: that if you want it, you must pay for it and if you pay for it, you value it. But theatre that is accessible is vital. If people paid the price of what it actually cost to produce a production, ticket prices would be untenable – so we are beholden to contributed support from foundations, individuals and government sources to make sure as many people can see theatre work as possible. Theatre is as essential in its nourishment as bread…

95% of this script is in Joe Papp’s own words. It is a work that Avi Hoffman has been working on for five years with Papp’s daughter, Susan and widow, Gail. As a Jewish woman, telling contemporary Jewish stories is something I am particularly interested in. Avi has a strong and loyal South Florida theatre following and is an expert in the field of Yiddish and Jewish theatre.

He introduced me to Eleanor, an impressive artist who I immediately connected with and admired. Eleanor and Lauren Helpern (set designer) are two artists who assist in bringing national recognition to GableStage because of their impressive body of work. As I was hired “to scale up GableStage,” this is important.

This project, a true American love letter and history lesson, is a world premiere. It is a theatrical, inspirational and triumphant everyman story: one ordinary man who accomplishes the extraordinary.

Plus 2021 marks Joseph Papp’s 100th birthday – so if not now, then when!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE From the time I began working in the theatre, in the late 1970’s (when I was extremely young) through now, there have been very few constants in this very unconstant business. One of those constants was, of course, Steven Sondheim, a genius and human – who changed the shape and direction of the musical theatre form and gave us a new world, and insight into ourselves that we could not imagine. We all know about him now, even if we didn’t know before. There have not been many such people; those with greater vision and depth and courage to expand the limits of how we live and think and feel, and break open that creative envelope.

Another such human and world-shifter was Joseph Papp,who remarkably, many of us may not know or no longer remember. His life ended too soon, yet he accomplished enormous feats. Joseph Papp re-shaped and re-defined so many aspects of the theatrical arts as well as the politics of art. His accomplishments are so many and so deep and so important, I will not even try to enumerate them here. And indeed, that was part of the challenge in creating this piece Joe Papp at the Ballroom. Telling the story of a man, one man – that not many people may not know anymore – is a challenging affair. There is danger in such a play, a kind of bio play. How do you keep and maintain the dramatic tension? How do you experience and share the struggle of a single human without an obvious antagonist? We have done so by shaping the journey of the man, with all his foibles; letting you experience him from within and without: his struggles and failures and successes; battling demons inside himself as well as on the outside, for the creation of a meaningful life.

He was a show-man, a wordsmith; mostly self-taught; with a sharp vision, carved out of his Jewish heritage and working class family legacy. He was driven to give a theatrical home, a refuge for expression, to people of all colors, ethnicities, sexualities – long before it became popular. He lived his life to make a theatre for the people, a public theatre.

We are here because Avi Hoffman, and Susan and Gail Papp had their own drive. Avi grabbed me and made me see what we could do with this piece.

Together with Susan Papp (Joe’s daughter) we worked together to adapt this play for you. Joe’s widow, Gail, was there to guide us.

We are also here because of Bari Newport’s faith and vision. I cannot thank her and everyone at GableStage enough for giving this new work its world premiere.

And thanks to you, for being our first audience, and for your participation in this. Theatre is above all a collaborative art and you, the audience, is a huge part of it.

ABOUT JOE PAPP

Joseph Papp

(June 22, 1921 - October 31, 1991), was an American producer, described by The New York Times as “one of the most influential figures in the history of the American theater.”

Born in Brooklyn to Jewish immigrants, Joseph ‘Yosl’ Papirofsky served in the Navy where he directed many shows. After WWII, he learned all aspects of theatre craft. In 1950, he took a position as an assistant stage manager and later became a stage manager for the CBS Television Network. In 1954 he founded the New York Shakespeare Festival and in 1957 was granted the use of Central Park for free productions of Shakespeare’s plays.

In 1967 he founded the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theatre at the old Astor Library in lower Manhattan. Its focus was to develop and present contemporary themed plays, experimental dramas, and musicals by young American playwrights. They were given the opportunity to “workshop” their visions and ideas. This concept became a working model for non-profit theatre. Several of Papp’s productions eventually traveled to Broadway, including Hair (1967); Sticks and Bones (1971); Charles Gordone’s No Place to Be Somebody (1969) which was the first off-Broadway play to win the Pulitzer Prize; That Championship Season (1972) and A Chorus Line (1975) which moved to Broadway to become one of the longest-running shows in Broadway’s history.

Papp was considered the most dynamic Off-Broadway producer from the 1960s through the 1980s, supporting innovative playwrights and talented actors. He challenged institutionalized homophobia in politics and championed multi-ethnic casting.

He led the “Save the Theatres” movement to designate Broadway as a National Historic Site. The outcome was the preservation of New York’s HistoricTheatre District. Joseph Papp was involved in many humanitarian acts and was a co-founder of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding.

After Papp’s death in 1991 The Public Theatre was renamed The Joseph Papp Public Theatre. By Mayoral proclamation, December 1st was designated as Joseph Papp Day in New York City. The intersection of Lafayette Street and Astor Place was renamed Joseph Papp Way.

About the Cast Avi Hoffman (Joe Papp; Adaptor) dedicates this performance to the two most important ‘Joes’ in his life: Joseph Papp and GableStage’s former Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler, may their memories be blessed. He is very grateful to Bari Newport for the opportunity to return to GableStage where he was seen in several of his favorite productions, including Indecent, My Name is Asher Lev and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. He was recently awarded congressional recognition, was invited to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis and was inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame for his lifetime work advancing Jewish culture,Yiddishkayt and Holocaust awareness through the Yiddishkayt Initiative (YI Love Jewish) - the charity he founded in 2015. As an actor, he was nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award for his Yiddish language portrayal of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. He is best known for his award-winning one man shows, Too Jewish? (PBS, Performer of the Year ’95 NY Press Magazine; LA Ovation Award - Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations), Too Jewish, Too! and his latest show Still Jewish After All These Years. On television, he was featured as Sid Raskin in the Starz series Magic City, as well as on the Netflix original series Bloodline, A&E’s series The Glades and on the NBC series Law & Order. He starred in the international award-winning short Yiddish Films: Boxed and Shehita (Best Thriller - HollyShorts Film Festival) and the motion picture – The Imported Bridegroom. He was also seen in the PBS documentary series They Came for Good: A History of the Jews in the USA. Avi has performed all over the world, has numerous acting and directing credits and has received multiple awards and nominations.

Phil Hinton (Music Director, Pianist) is a British-born Pianist, Arranger, Orchestrator and Conductor. He has worked in those capacities for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and many independent broadcasting production companies. He has also arranged and orchestrated music, played piano and conducted on more than 200 major hit albums for artists such as Shirley Bassey, Anthony Newley, Howard Keel, Vince Hill, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Paul McCartney, to name just a few. He was personal music director to British singing star Vince Hill for more than 10 years. Since emigrating to the U.S. in 1994, he has given many classical and jazz piano recitals on several cruise ships. Phil has directed the music for countless theatre shows all over the U.S. He was conductor of The Florida Orchestra for three years. He was Musical Director and Pianist on Engelbert Humperdinck’s 2013 tour of Australia and New Zealand. He was also the Resident Pianist for the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra in West Palm Beach under the baton of celebrated Singer and Entertainer Michael Feinstein for three years and a regular guest Pianist with The Florida Orchestra in Tampa, FL. Phil is an Adjunct Professor of Piano in the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University teaching Commercial Piano Techniques. He is also heavily in demand all over the world as a Commercial Arranger and Orchestrator.

About the Creative Team Susan Papp Lippman (Playwright) is Brooklyn-born Playwright who is passionate about musical theatre. She produced several shows at the Musical Theatre Center of Greater Washington, including “A Chorus Line,” fulfilling, in part, a family legacy as the first-born daughter of Joseph Papp. In Maryland, Susan was invited to participate in the Library of Congress Great American Composer Series performed locally in the Maryland suburbs. Susan graduated from Brooklyn College with a Major in English and Minor in Speech and Theatre. Susan pursued her Master’s in Library Science from Pratt Institute and Master of Arts from New York University in Theatre History and Criticism. Susan reinvented herself as a Judaic Studies Teacher at Washington Hebrew Congregation in D.C. Susan is most proud of her loving and supportive husband Richard, her talented son Jonathan and amazing daughter-in-love Andrea.

Eleanor Reissa (Adaptor & Director) is a Brooklyn-born acclaimed actress, singer, director, choreographer and writer. A Tony-nominated director (Those Were the Days), a broadway and television actress (Indecent;The Plot Against America) and a prizewinning Playwright (Wishful Thinking), she is also the former artistic director of the world’s oldest Yiddish theatre (Folksbiene). Other directing credits include: Cowgirls; Diana of Dobson’s; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; Echoes of the War and The Adventure of Hershel Ostropolye. As a singer, Eleanor has headlined in every major venue in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, The Town Hall, Joe’s Pub and Michael Feinstein’s 54 Below, as well as in festivals around the world. She is a storyteller in English and Yiddish, and the daughter of parents who lived through the Holocaust.

Eleanor is the host of the Those Who Were There: Voices from the Holocaust podcast, drawn from the Yale University/Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies.

Her highly-anticipated memoir, The Letters Project: A Daughter’s Journey (Post Hill Press) will be published in January 2022.

Katie Ellison (Production Stage Manager) is thrilled to be on her fifth season as the Resident Production Stage Manager at GableStage. Outside of GableStage, she recently had the privilege of working with Miami New Drama at the Colony Theatre on their production of Seven Deadly Sins. Other credits include Assistant Stage Manager for Peter and the Starcatchers at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and Assistant Stage Manager for Zoetic Stage’s productions of Stripped and Rapture, Blister, Burn. She was also the Production Stage Manager for Orchestra Miami’s Music at The Biltmore and The Mice War. Katie is a proud graduate of the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management. She is profoundly lucky to have the continued support and love of her husband Kevin and their two dogs, Milo and Penny.

Lauren Helpern (Scenic Design) has designed numerous critically acclaimed and world-premiere productions, including 4000 Miles at Lincoln Center Theatre (Lucille Lortel Award), the Pulitzer Prize winning Disgraced at LCT3, Bad Jews and

WHO’S WHO Skintight at Roundabout Theatre Company, Model Apartment for Primary Stages, BUG at Barrow Street Theatricals (Obie Award) and, most recently, Harry Townsend’s Last Stand. Regionally, she has designed at Ford’s Theatre, Geffen Playhouse, South Coast Repertory, La Jolla Playhouse, Arizona Theatre Company, Pioneer Theatre Company, Huntington Theatre Company, Portland Center Stage, Bucks County Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, Chautauqua Theatre Company, Anchorage Opera and Actors Theatre of Louisville, among others. She designed the National Tour of American Girl Live and several productions of Blue Man Group. She is currently designing May We All, a new musical, which will be seen in Memphis, TX in January and Nashville, TN in summer 2022. She is also a Production Designer (Janice Gunter: Ghost Hunter on WhoHaha) and Assistant Art Director (Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration).

Sean McGinley (Sound Designer) has been a Sound Engineer and Designer with Gulfshore Playhouse, The Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, ME, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket in MA and StarQuest Performing Arts competitions touring the country. He has done sound engineering projects with many other companies including Centers for the Arts of Bonita Springs, Theatre Zone, Ten Bucks Theatre Company, Robinson Ballet and One Egg No Batter Productions. Sean was involved with upgrading GableStage’s sound system to improve the theatre experience and is delighted to now get to design on that very sound system. Sean has been in love with live sound since he was 13 years old and first sat behind a console at his church.

Tony Galaska (Lightning Design) is an Associate Professor and Head of Design and Production at Florida International University. His first production with GableStage was with The Children and his design work has been seen at The Contemporary American Theater Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and The Texas Shakespeare Festival, as well as in NY with companies such as Toy Box Theatre Company, The Gallery Players, Wings Theatre Company, Metropolitan Playhouse and New Perspectives Theatre Company NYC. Tony has received Faculty Design Excellence awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) for his lighting design of The Cook, Spring Awakening, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and The House of the Spirits.Tony is currently the Chair of Design, Technology and Management for KCACTF Region IV. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design from Purdue University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and an Associate of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha.

Alexandru Gherman (Film Streaming Director) is delighted to be part of his second production at GableStage. He is a Film and Theatre Director and Producer. He obtained his Master of Arts from London Film School, London, UK and also has a Ph.D. with a subject related to Cinema-Therapy. He is currently teaching Directing Actors at University of Miami. Before his theatre directorial debut, Alexandru was Assistant Director to the Opera and Theatre Director Andrei Serban (Tony nominated) and to GableStage’s former Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler. He has worked on projects for Chamber Orchestra of Europe, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), European Commission in the UK and more. Alexandru was also Assistant Director to Film Director Corneliu Porumboiu, for the film The Whistlers, in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. He is currently working on his feature fiction debut and a virtual reality project.

WHO’S WHO Emil White (Costume Design) is happy to once again return to the GableStage design crew, having joined as Costume Designer for The Children and continuing in subsequent productions of Watson. Emil’s work has been seen throughout Florida and New York, as well as many regional theatres that include Actors Theatre, Jenny Wiley Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse, Island City Stage and Palm Beach Opera.

Debbie Richardson (Wardrobe Supervisor) has been involved in theatre as a Performer, Stage Manager, Director, Props Mistress, Wardrobe Mistress, Dresser and more in Rochester, NY and Miami, FL. Most recently she’s been seen onstage at Miami Acting Company and Theatre Lab’s Overnight Theater Project. In addition to her work at GableStage, she serves as Resident Wardrobe Supervisor at Zoetic Stage.

About the Company Ana Maria Carrano (Director of Marketing & Community Engagement) is thrilled to join the staff after serving as a GableStage Board Member for three years.

She believes in the transformative power of the arts and innovation. Her background is in journalism, publications and project management. As a journalist, Ana Maria has worked on visual arts, cultural heritage and human rights projects. She recently collaborated with Univision’s first U.S. fact-checking project and on stories about

WHO’S WHO formerly incarcerated people. Awarded the Roche Award in Journalism 2020 (Gabo Foundation); Excellence in Journalism Award on Human Rights 2019 (Inter American Press Association); Miami Dade College Innovation Prize 2018 – 2nd Place and the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship 2013-2014 (Stanford University).

Arturo (Art) Garcia* (Changeover Lead) has worked throughout South Florida as a Technical Director, Crew Member, Actor, Stage Manager and Teaching Artist and is happy to be working with GableStage. Art is a proud member of the Actors’ Equity Association and has been seen in South Florida as Solyony in Three Sisters at Miami Theater Center (MTC). He has a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts from Angelo State University in Angelo, TX. Diana Garle (Social Media Specialist) is so happy to have joined the GableStage team this year in-house! She has found a love for running social media particularly for the theatre community and entertainment industry additionally managing accounts as Social Media Coordinator for City Theatre, Theatre Lab and Equal Justice Studios.

Diana is also a bicoastal Latinx Actor.You may recognize her from several GableStage productions such as The Humans, Kings and Watson. Diana will be starring as the lead in The Rebirth, a feature film and will be joining City Theatre in June 2022 acting in their 25th Anniversary Summer Shorts festival at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the

Iva Kosović Duvin (Interim Director of Advancement) is an independent Fundraising and Communications Professional, Founder & Principal of Duvin Collaborative. Prior to this, she served as Vice President of Advancement and Community Engagement at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science; before that, she spent 10 years with the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS). She has served on committees in support of several nonprofit organizations in greater Miami, including Miami City Ballet, Coconut Grove Cares and No More Tears. She regularly serves as a Grant Panelist for the Florida Department of State; Division of Cultural Affairs. A classically trained Pianist, Iva immigrated to the U.S. from Croatia at the age of 17 and studied Piano Performance at the University of Miami and Florida International University under the tutelage of Ivan Davis and Kemal Gekic. She holds a Master’s in Performing Arts Management and a Bachelor’s in Classical Piano Performance from Florida International University.

Alejandro Jose Martin (Artistic Administrator) has served at GableStage since 2012, joining full time in 2013 and covering 44 productions (42 of which he served as Assistant to the late Joseph Adler of GableStage). Prone to wander in his interests, he has previously worked as a News Contractor, Mixologist, Construction Worker, Graphic Designer, Sales Representative and more, along with acquiring a couple of degrees and minors. He enjoys the perpetual change in theatre and dreams of

WHO’S WHO becoming a Sokushinbutsu one day.

Chandra Maye (Director of Operations) has more than 20 years of experience of Operational Management in various industries including Arts & Entertainment, Education and Telecommunications, and specializes in comprehensive HR Management, Logistics and Coordination, Budgeting, Project Management, Marketing and Staff Development. A born Canadian of Jamaican parentage, she spent many years after graduating Temple University, building her professional skills in Philadelphia and New York. With her loving partner and Yorkie, she now calls Florida home and is proud to be a part of the GableStage team during this next phase of growth.

Bari Newport (Producing Artistic Director) joined GableStage as Producing Artistic Director in April 2021. She came to Miami, FL from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, ME, where she served as Artistic Director for nine seasons.

Previously, she was Artistic Associate at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA, Artistic Associate/Literary Manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, Associate Producer at Horizon Theatre and Associate Director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a Producer, Bari has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. While leading Penobscot—which serves 40,000 people each season—Newport doubled the budget in eight years, produced five world premieres, created a partnership with the Penobscot (Native American) Nation, with whom she developed two, large-scale, National Endowment for the Arts-supported projects and fully funded the company’s first endowment. She kept her entire staff of 15 employed during the pandemic and produced an innovative season that included 17 newly commissioned, digital projects. Her work as a Director and Actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage Theatre Company, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Kristen Pieski (Production Manager) is thrilled to be back home at GableStage after a brief five-year hiatus spent at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts as Engagement Manager. During her time at the Arsht, she managed hundreds of events, but highlights include watching Tony Bennett sound check in a tracksuit, burning Joe Biden’s pasta, having a moment with Kamala Harris during the second NBC News Presidential Debate and getting David Beckham one of the best Cuban sandwiches he’s ever had. Prior to the Arsht, she was the Production Stage Manager at GableStage for eight years of shows including The Adding Machine, Blasted, A Round-Heeled Woman, Ruined and The Royale.

Carlos Rodriguez (Technical Director) has been with Gablestage for more than 20 years. He is a jack-of-all-trades with a plethora of experience in Carpentry, Props, Sound and Electrics. He has a passion for all he does technically, as well as a love

WHO’S WHO for working with people. Some of Carlos’ favorite productions have been Killer Joe, Fahrenheit 451, Ruined, and The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Carlos is honored to be able to continue Joseph Adler’s legacy.

Magnus Stark (Graphics/Video/Photography) is a true visual artist. His past experience includes roles as Marketing Director at Penobscot Theatre Company, as well as Digital Assets Manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District and Director of Production for eVox Productions interactive photography studios in Los Angeles, Detroit, New York and London. In his free time, Magnus creates camera-less fine-art “photographs” which can be enjoyed at magnusstark.com.

Dennis Jay Vasta III (Box Office Manager) was born in Queens, NY, but raised in Miami, FL. Dennis is always offering exceptional customer service with a hearty laugh and a smile to make every experience here at GableStage a great one. Constantly learning, working hard and quickly adapting to changes, has made Dennis an essential part of the company for more than seven years. He is very tech-savvy and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He learned many things from working with GableStage’s former Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler over the last few years, and owes much of his growth to him. He’s excited the theatre has fallen into such capable hands with new Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport and looks forward to welcoming you all back to not only this season, but to many more seasons of great theatre!

REMEMBERING JOE

Joseph Adler (October 5, 1940 – April 16, 2020) served twenty seasons

at GableStage. His career included directing at many South Florida theatres; The Coconut Grove Playhouse, New Theatre, Area Stage, Hollywood Boulevard Theatre, Players Theatre, Ruth Foreman Theatre, Florida Shakespeare Theatre, City Theatre, Hollywood Playhouse and Shores Performing Arts. Active in South Florida’s film/theater community, Adler directed hundreds of television commercials and industrial films – winning many awards, including the Clio.

Since he became Producing Artistic Director, GableStage has been the recipient of 64 Carbonell Awards and 227 Carbonell Nominations. Adler has been nominated twenty-five times (nineteen at GableStage) and has won the Carbonell Award for Best Director eleven times.

Adler was awarded the prestigious George Abbott Award for “significant contributions to the artistic life and cultural development of greater Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches.” He has received many Best Director awards (CurtainUp, SunPost, NewTimes) and a Remy Award from the Theatre League of South Florida, as well as The Heart of the Arts Award presented by New World School of the Arts. He was awarded the Arts and Entertainment Community Service Award presented by the South Florida International Press Club, and the Truth Award from the Human Services Coalition. He received a Silver Palm Award for his “Outstanding Support of the South Florida Theatre Community, the Theatre League and the Theatre Festival, as well as his Consistent Outstanding Work at GableStage and his Commitment to an Educational Outreach Program in Miami-Dade County.”

Adler studied drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and graduated from the Film Department at NYU.

Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987-1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed

by Hurricane Andrew. The company continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1999, the company moved to the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.

Since 1999, GableStage has been at the cutting edge of theatre in South Florida, striving to present the most vital works of international, contemporary playwrights and producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community. The company maintains a tradition of producing plays directly from successful Broadway and off-Broadway runs.

In addition to a robust Main Stage season, GableStage presents a variety of Education and Community Outreach programs throughout the community.

GableStage is the recipient of over 200 Carbonell Award nominations and 64 Carbonell Awards, a prestigious South Florida theatre award. In 2013, the Carbonell Awards honored GableStage with the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theatre scene and in January 2016, Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler, was deemed Champion of the Arts by the local arts funding group, Citizens Interested in Arts.

GABLESTAGE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Othello, School Tour 2020

More than One Million Students Since 1979, GableStage—formerly known as Florida Shakespeare Theatre—has been privileged to introduce over one million Miami-Dade County Middle and High School Public school students to live theatre productions of the highest quality. The Shakespeare in the Schools program partners with the MDCPS Cultural Passport Program to bring an abridged show directly to high school students during the school day.

Selected plays focus on the classic works of Shakespeare and have been presented to public and private schools throughout Miami-Dade County. Careful consideration is taken to ensure that the highest quality of teaching artists are involved with the tour.

The primary objectives of these productions are to expose culturally underserved students to an important work that may speak to their lives or the world today; allow the students to hear Shakespeare’s words out loud in a creative manner rather than read in a classroom; and to create a conversation around the historical elements of the production versus the storytelling devices used.

During the performance, students are directly encouraged by actors to seek out live cultural events within the community, see Shakespeare’s works in a new light, and continue their studies with historical works of theatre and literature.

Students—no matter their economic status—are given the opportunity to see live theatre. free of charge each year of high school. Many first-time attendees have never seen a live theatrical performance.

In 2022, King Lear will be adapted and directed by FIU Associate Professor, Shakespeare scholar, and Producing Director of What If Works, Inc., Phillip Church.

Donations Needed There are many ways to support the theatre. Donations at any level are tax deductible.

Stackable Washer and Dryer

Costumes need to be cleaned! Having a washer/dryer on-site at the theatre will save time and resources.

Vehicles

Van: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

Cars: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or an Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.
