About me Hello, I’m Gloria Barry, a Master of Architecture student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, class of 2026, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. I am passionate about the power of architecture to create meaningful change. While I find excitement in projects that impact large communities, I equally value the profound effects that thoughtful design can have on smaller groups.

Each space has the potential to foster connections and enrich lives, and this duality drives my pursuit of architecture.

TWELVE CORNERS & BRIGHTON FARMERS MARKET The redesign of Twelve Corners in Brighton, NY, envisions a more pedestrian-friendly town center. This plan aims to reduce vehicular traffic, increase green spaces, and improve pedestrian safety and engagement. Additionally, it will introduce a new all-season Brighton Farmers Market featuring permanent storefront vendors that will interact with the revitalized streetscape.

STRENGTHENING AN URBAN COMMUNITY THROUGH ADAPTIVE REUSE The adaptive reuse of 143-153 Saint Paul Street in Rochester, NY, revitalizes the site into a mixeduse building that integrates residential, retail, and hospitality spaces. This project enhances community engagement and safety while fostering vibrant social interaction in the urban environment.

FIRST ROOTS ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOL The adaptive reuse of the former Beech-Nut facility in Rochester, NY, transforms it into a charter school for grades 3-5. With a focus on environmental education, the design features a bifurcating atrium, glass bridge, greenhouse, and outdoor learning spaces.

OASIS Participatory art exhibition proposed for St. Joseph’s Park to revitalize this historic community space in Rochester, New York. The project invites residents to engage creatively by renting art supplies and contributing to a collaborative wall. It will also include gathering spaces, displays on the park’s history, and a retail kiosk for local art, aiming to restore St. Joseph’s Park as a vibrant urban oasis THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN The winning project in the Hyperspace 2023 Interior Design competition held by RIT in In collaboration with Cannon Design, Kaleida Health, and Cooper Lighting. The project reenvisions a physical therapy room that will be located on the pediatric floor of HighPointe Skilled Nursing Facility in Buffalo, New York.

THE HUNGERFORD OFFICES: SUITES Fully furnished office suites available for rent to small or hybrid businesses proposed to be located on the second floor of building E at the Hungerford building in Rochester, New York.

THE HUNGERFORD OFFICES: GAME DESIGN Fully furnished game design and development office available for rent with the intention of bringing a game design company to Rochester, New York. The proposed location is on a portion of the third floor in building E of the Hungerford Building.

CONSONE RESTAURANT A restaurant themed around global connection, travel, and natural elements located within The Vagabond hotel proposed to reside within the historic Kresge Building in Rochester, New York.

Twelve Corners & Brighton Farmers Market Development The Twelve Corners master plan reimagines the town center of Brighton, NY, focusing on enhancing pedestrian accessibility and activity.

Monroe Avenue, Elmwood Avenue, and Winton Road are narrowed to two lanes to slow down traffic, improving safety and creating a more inviting environment for pedestrians and cyclists. Protected bike lanes, widened sidewalks, and new greenscapes integrate the streetscape with surrounding buildings while pulling sidewalks closer to facades promotes vibrant street life and strengthens community engagement.

Complementing this vision, the new Brighton Farmers Market is designed as an all-season space featuring 42 vendor stalls, including six permanent storefronts that activate the street and engage the community. These storefronts, housing small businesses such as delis and cafés, attract foot traffic and strengthen the connection between vendors and residents. The market’s design incorporates a mezzanine performance area and ample natural light, creating a dynamic, year-round gathering space that fosters community interaction. These initiatives revitalize Twelve Corners, shaping it into a dynamic, pedestrian-friendly hub that enhances community engagement and redefines the town center.

Strengthening an Urban Community Through Adaptive Reuse Development

This capstone project revitalizes urban areas by adapting vacant buildings to enhance community safety and engagement. Inspired by Jane Jacobs’ “eyes on the street,” it addresses urban decay and promotes social interaction.

Issue

The challenge of urban revitalization revolves around the decay of urban communities. Neglected structures mar cityscapes, fracturing communal bonds, and compromising safety. Inspired by Jane Jacobs’ influential concept of “eyes on the street,” integrating diverse residential and commercial functions within buildings emerges as a promising solution. This approach addresses the scarcity of affordable housing and revitalizes communities, fostering vibrancy and enhancing security.

The night sky ceiling panels made with fiber optic lighting add ambiance to the booths and emulate eating in the vicolo outside of a small restaurant in Italy.

PROJECT SITE

First Roots Environmental Charter School Development

This group project transformed the former Beech-Nut facility in Rochester, NY, into a charter school for grades 3-5, featuring an atrium and a glass bridge connecting to an environmental science center with a greenhouse. Emphasizing environmental education, the design integrates natural materials and outdoor learning spaces. All images shown highlight work that is, or is nearly entirely, my own, including extensive Revit modeling and the creation of final project visuals.

Oasis

Development St. Joseph’s Park is envisioned as a revitalized community space centered around a participatory art exhibition. Once a vibrant neighborhood hub, the park will invite residents to engage creatively by renting supplies, contributing to a collaborative wall, or creating pieces for the canvas grid to take home. The project will celebrate the park’s historical significance while providing welcoming gathering spaces and featuring art for sale at a kiosk.

This initiative aims to restore the park’s role as a vital urban oasis, encouraging community involvement and collaboration through art.

The Butterfly Garden Development

Materials

The Butterfly Garden’s purpose is to re-envision the pediatric physical therapy room for Kaleida Health at their HighPointe Skilled Nursing Facility in Buffalo, NY. Because the pediatric unit theme is The Very Hungry Caterpillar and this is the room where these kids do all of their “firsts,” my team and I decided to create a butterfly garden for these little caterpillars to blossom within. My role in this group as a 3rd-year student was to be the project manager. As such, I completed the majority of the work in Revit, including modeling features such as the tree that surrounds a pre-existing column, the hill with steps that house a trampoline, the cocoon corner for sensory play and acoustic deprivation, and the design of the tactile mural on the south wall.

As the firstplace winner, this project will be built at the HighPointe Skilled Nursing Facility in the near future.

The Hungerford Offices: Suites Development

This project involved four fully-furnished rentable office suites that can suit the office needs of any local small business. In redesigning The Hungerford, the proposed office spaces give new life to the industrial history of the building through refurbishment and reutilization of pre-existing building elements and fixtures. The industrial design is bolstered by a railroad theme, inspired by the adjacent railyard, and contrasted with biophilic considerations to reduce workplace stress and improve air-quality.

The Hungerford Offices: Game Design Development

This is a continuation of the previous project with a focus on a single specific client-type. On this floor, the design is geared towards a single occupancy, hoping to draw a game design firm to Rochester. While the same theme continues throughout the project, the game design office also incorporates bright colors, dynamic lighting features, and a sense of playfulness.

Consone Restaurant Development

The casual dining experience at Consone takes place amidst a neutral design with eclectic adornments. Utilizing a neutral palette for the fixed elements of the design lends itself well to a gallery-style display of diverse art collections.

Along with the neutral color scheme, the design reflects elements of cartography with an emphasis on the world map, encompassing the idea of international inclusivity. By implementing furniture, fixtures, and maps reminiscent of those from the earlier half of the 1900s, the restaurant pays homage to the historic property that houses it. Additionally, as a COVID-19 consideration biophilic design elements are incorporated to support air filtration.
