2019 NATIONAL HONORARY SOCIETY DINNER FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDENTS KEYNOTE SPEECH

By Grant Silow It’s a real honor to be here with you today. As Sra. Ayers said, my name is Grant Silow and I’m a 2008 GA graduate. I sat in these seats in this same room 12 years ago for this same ceremony, so to my fellow members of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, felicidades. To the new inductees to Le Societe Honoraire de Francais, felicitations, and to the inductees to the Chinese National Honors Society, congratulations.

I’m so thankful to Senora Ayers and Madame Test for having me back to GA to speak to you today. I want to talk a little bit about my time here, and also to think about some of the gifts I’ve gotten from being a lifelong language student, which started at GA. I came to GA in 7th grade and my first Spanish class was with Sra. Dwinell and the sixth graders. I spent more time thinking about my sixth-grade crush in that class than I did thinking about verb conjugations, but through the year, I started to pick up some vocab words, string together some sentences, and eventually got to the point where I could practice with my older sister, who was also studying Spanish.

Eventually, it started to come much more naturally – certainly more naturally than the Algebra I class I was taking down the hall.

By the time I got to high school, I caught up to my own class, and remember thinking about the two guys, Dan and Brian Lipschutz, who I viewed as my competition. Despite that competitive feeling, I recall having fun conversations in Spanish with Dan, Brian and others who loved the language. At age 15, it was a real gift to be able to communicate in another language; it frees you up to say things that you might not otherwise say outloud in English. That was one of the first gifts I noticed about studying foreign languages.

And the gifts got better over time: the ability to travel to new places and connect with new people in a way I hadn’t been able to before was the next gift.

The first trip came after 9th grade when Sra. Romeu took us to her native Mexico, where we got to tour the capital and see the pyramids, among other things. We also went to a city called Cuernavaca, where we did a homestay for a week. This is where my Spanish really started improving, and it was by necessity as nobody in the host family spoke any English. I was really forced to step up my game there.

By Grant Silow I did a similar trip the next year. This was thanks to some enterprising trip-planner who convinced a bunch of GA parents that it would be a good idea to send a group of 16-year-olds to spend a week in the Costa Rican rainforest next to an active volcano. We spent time with park rangers, volunteers, and many other locals, allowing us to practice our Spanish skills in a new environment. On top of that, we did another homestay coupled with intensive Spanish classes in a city called Turrialba.

There was one element of that trip that really stuck with me, and allowed me to see new value in speaking foreign languages. I called my dad one day when we had come out of the rainforest and got access to phones. He informed me on that call that my grandmother had passed away. I was able to navigate the city and find a church. I spoke with the priest and, though I’m Jewish (apparently there aren’t many Jews in Costa Rica), was able to find some Old Testament Bible verses I could reflect on to honor my grandmother. That was really impactful.

I rounded out Spanish education at GA and finished with AP Spanish Literature in 11th grade. This was Sra. Ayers’ class, and it was really neat because you go from the tactical education of conjugating verbs and memorizing vocabulary words to learning about new cultures through the lens of language, art, and even salsa dancing.

The next year, I got to take French 1/2 Honors with Mr. David, whom I’m sitting with here tonight. That class was neat for 2 reasons: first, it was senior year and we had an incredible roster of students in there. Second was the structure of the class: it was equal parts learning French and learning how to play petanque out by the field house. Then we’d sneak over to Rich’s for a cheesesteak and call it a day.

What I realized in French was that I’d developed a framework for learning languages that made it much easier to pick up French than it was to pick up Spanish. It was exciting to figure out that your brain becomes more absorbent, not less, once you learn how to learn a language. I knew that, as I moved on to college, I’d focus on international studies and go for even more language experience than I’d gotten at GA. One other thing I picked up at this time, as I was attending different foreign language competitions around the county with classmates from GA, is that GA students always did exceptionally well. Now, GA is a smart school – everyone in this room is smart – but other schools have smart kids too, and we somehow beat them consistently. We have a really fantastic faculty, and I started to see how lucky we were to have the teachers that we did. It made all the difference.

So, fast forward to 2012, I graduated college with a degree in International Studies. I took Portuguese, Mandarin, and even picked Spanish back up for the easy A. I realized during college and during five years of working that I was able to connect with people in a unique way as I described earlier.

Now I’m in an MBA program with 350 people in my class. It’s unique, in that 45% of my classmates have non-US passports. People speak dozens of languages. The ability to chat with people about experiences I’ve had with language or travel or experiencing different cultures has been really special and has really contributed to the friendships I’ve built with classmates.

By Grant Silow So, I’ll give some highlights of the travel I’ve done, since it’s been such an important part of my experience in the MBA. I’ve led 54 friends from 15 countries on a trip to Israel. I’ve watched an Eagles playoff game with the Eagles Fan Club in Rio de Janeiro. I’ve camped out in the desert with Bedouins in Jordan. I’ve explored the old city in Cartagena and the jungles by Medellin. I’ve had a strawberry daiquiri in Hemingway’s favorite bar in Havana. And I’ve had a conversation entirely through Google Translate in St. Petersburg. I’ve made friends in places like Dubai, Cape Town, and Iceland.

What you’ll notice is that I never mentioned anything about studying Hebrew, Arabic or Afrikaans. I can barely say “hello.” But this openness to engage with people of different cultures, who have entirely different perspectives than you do, is something that I learned from my study of foreign language.

At a time when there’s so much that divides us both at home and abroad, this mindset of being open to engaging with people who are different than you are is so important.

It’s on our generation to bring people back together, so I encourage you to take every opportunity you have to talk to people who seem different than you. Whether it’s talking to an Uber driver, someone in the airport, or even someone you see in the hallway, take that chance to engage. Ask them what they care about; ask them about their family; ask them where they want to travel.

What you’ll find, and it’s amazing to see, is that there’s much more we have in common than there is that separates us.

I hope you’ll all use the gifts of learning foreign language here at GA to make those new connections.

Congratulations on all you’ve accomplished and on your admittance to these various honors societies.

La France pour moi Par Matthew Sender ‘20 Glissant sur la neige, je sens l’air froid qui frappe mon visage. Sous mes pieds, il y a deux planches longues qui me permettent d’explorer un monde entièrement nouveau. Creusant d’un nuage de neige, je m’arrête - quand je regarde, je vois une vue sans pareil : montagnes - grandes et majestueuses comme les gratte-ciels dans une ville.

Je suis au toit du monde, littéralement et métaphoriquement.

Comme un enfant, il y a six ans, ma mère a décidé d’organiser un voyage en France avec ma sœur et moi. Si elle n’avait pas organisé ce séjour, la France n'aurait pas été la même pour moi.

Bien que j’aie eu douze ans, je me souviens de chaque moment comme si c’était hier. Nous sommes arrivés à Genève, et puis nous avons pris une voiture à Chamonix, une petite ville de ski au coin de la France, de l’Italie, et de la Suisse. Ce jour-là, je me souviens du petit chalet de bois où nous restions, tout avec une petite cuisine et un jacuzzi en plein air. Je sentais que je vivais comme un roi.

Après un jour à la montagne, nous avons décidé d’explorer la ville. Nous avons fait du shopping aux supermarchés français, où nous avons trouvé des fromages et du saucisson qui fondaient dans ma bouche.

Malgré la nourriture délicieuse et les chalets incroyables, j’ai passé la majorité de mon temps à la montagne. Il est bon que les Alpes aient pénétré en France - à mon avis, la France a quelques-unes des meilleures pistes que j’aie vues.

Comparé aux petites “montagnes” ici en Pennsylvanie (elles sont plus comme des collines), les Alpes sont un monde entièrement nouveau. Je souhaite qu’un jour que je puisse amener mes amis au France pour un voyage de ski dont j’ai très envie.

Tout le monde connaît la culture contemporaine de la France - le vin, le pain, le fromage - mais à mon avis, la France est quelque chose de différent : l’endroit de mon activité favorite du monde.

Barcelona Adventure

By Harry Bradley ‘22 Over the summer, I traveled to Barcelona and Paris for 9 days accompanied by many fellow teenagers, through a program called Travel for Teens. Honestly, it was the best experience of my life.

Meeting life-long friends, trying the cities’ native foods, admiring sites, and speaking to locals was an entirely new experience that I’ll never forget.

I was very skeptical about going to Europe without my parents. As a kid, I went to overnight camp for two summers when I was 9 and 10, and I was extremely homesick both years. That pretty much scared me out of ever going anywhere far away without my parents. So during the car ride to JFK International Airport, you can only imagine how I felt. My heart felt like it was trying to jump out of my chest, and I desperately wanted to jump out of the car and go home. Unfortunately, fate was not on my side that day and we arrived at the airport where it was over 100 degrees and swarming with people. We finally found my group, and before I knew it, my parents were gone. My nerves began to fade as I started to get to know the other kids, who were from all over-- Hawaii, Bermuda, Atlanta, San Francisco and by the time we boarded the plane to Spain and I knew I was in for an exciting trip.

When we arrived in Barcelona and I saw the old historic buildings, and the normal noises of city hustle and bustle turned into Spanish, I knew this city was very different than what I was used to. Even the beaches, something that seems pretty universally similar, were somehow very different (the biggest difference being that many people opt out of wearing clothing.) One of my favorite differences was the food. Instead of Door Dashing Chipotle, I was hit with a wave of various Spanish cuisines, such as patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), tortilla Espanol, jamon Iberico (Iberian ham), fideas uá, and pulpo (octopus).

A highlight of the trip was a 3 hour bike ride all around Barcelona where we saw countless iconic sites. We stopped in El Raval, an artistic area with modern, contemporary architecture. We rode alongside Platja Barceloneta until we reached Port Olimpic, a pier overlooking the ocean and lustrous, massive yachts. We also stopped in Parc de la Ciutadella, a vast, open park with a pond in the very back. In the pond, there’s a large temple-like structure with fountains stationed all around it. We visited Sagrada Familia which was one of the most incredible places I’ve ever seen. It has had many different architects from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds, which is reflected in the decorations scaling the exterior walls. The inside is modeled after a forest, with huge pillars and stained glass lining the walls. On the last day we stopped in Park Guell, which was designed by Antoni Gaudi (he was the very first architect of Sagrada Familia, too). The view from the park was breathtaking, showcasing the entire city with the sun sitting right atop of it. Scattered around the park were various species of flowers and plants, with the famous El Drac, a giant, ceramic lizard right near the exit.

On our last night in Barcelona we had an amazing dinner outside at a restaurant overlooking the city. I looked around and couldn’t believe how much I had experienced in such a short amount of time.

If you’re unsure about traveling with a group, I encourage you to do so. My experience exceeded all expectations, I met lifelong friends, and the city’s culture gave me a new perspective on life.

La Provence et la France authentique Par Marius Vava ‘20 Pendant l'été de 2018 j’ai visité la France avec ma famille et ce voyage a eu un impact profond sur ma vie et notre perception de la France.

Notre voyage a été concentré sur deux endroits, le premier était la Côte d’Azur et Nice, et l'autre était Avignon et les petits villages qui l'entourent. Nos premiers jours sur la Côte d’Azur, on a vu toute l'élégance et la richesse que la France avait à offrir. Tous les appartements étaient très colorés et propres, il n’y avait pas un seul bâtiment dans toute la Côte qui n'était pas parfait.

Après 4 jours ici, il est devenu facile de croire que toute la France était parfaite comme la Côte et que toutes les autres régions françaises ne seraient pas aussi intéressantes.

Je dois être honnête quand je dis que j’avais peur que j’serais déçu avec le reste du voyage.

Après avoir vu la région qui est la plus touristique et la plus riche de la France je ne croyais pas que quelque chose d’aussi intéressant ou beau pouvait exister.

Dans les premières heures de notre séjour à Avignon beaucoup de mes peurs se sont réalisées. La circulation était horrible et on a perdu notre rue trois fois parce que le panneau était vieux et on n'avait pas cru que notre rue était aussi petite qu'une porte dans un des vieux murs de la ville. La congestion et le bruit étaient horribles, et les murs de la ville ont contribué au sens de claustrophobie.

Le lendemain matin était un samedi qui était beaucoup plus tranquille que le dernier jour.

Toutes les voitures étaient dans les garages et notre rue était fermée pour le marché aux fruits et légumes. À ce moment-là les murs contribuaient à un effet confortable et familial et les vieilles maisons imparfaites ou sales ont contribué au même effet. Les rues avaient plus de couleurs que la blanche et la grise et les gens dans les rues étaient tous aussi heureux ou plus heureux que les gens de la Côte. Ici la vie était plus simple et tout ce qu’on avait était ce qu’on faisait ou ce qu’on trouvait, pas ce qu’on avait acheté. À la fin du voyage je pouvais dire que j’aimais mieux Avignon et ces villages voisins que la Côte parce qu’ils étaient plus authentiques et pittoresques. La beauté et les vraies aventures ne sont pas à la surface, mais dans le cœur des villages et des gens qui y vivent. Il y a plus de Français qui vivent comme les Français de Provence que ceux qui vivent comme sur la Côte d’Azur. C’est à dire qu’il y a plus d’aventures et d’expériences en France que les expériences qui étaient dans les livres touristiques et les films et j’attends avec impatience le moment quand je les éprouverai encore une fois à l’avenir.

Spanish Exchange

By Victoria Asuar Living in Philadelphia and attending to Germantown Academy has been one of the best experiences in my life. We were all looking forward to improve our English and make new friends and I think we all accomplished it.

The main difference was getting used to the schedule: in Spain we eat later and we wake up and go to bed late. Spanish food is very different from American food, but I didn’t find it difficult to get used to it, as there is a lot of variety. Family life is quite similar; in Spain we are also really close to our families and relatives.

American and Spanish cities have very little in common. In Spain we have more old historical buildings and American cities are modern. The trips to Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. were all really fun and I really enjoyed visiting them and learning about your culture.

I really liked play ing soccer every day after school, getting to be part of the team and meeting all my teammates. In Spain, school teams are not popular, so if you want to do sport, you have to look for a team and go to practise after school, which finishes at 5.30. I think that having all these school teams is the best way to encourage students to do sports.

Finding out that I had been chosen for this exchange was probably one of the best news I’ve ever received.

In Spain we have to work really hard to get this opportunity. Planning everything and wondering how everyone would welcome us was really exciting, because I had been told that everyone was really welcoming. Everything turned out to be even better than what I had expected and I think we all felt part of GA during these past months.

I am really grateful to my exchange and her family and I would like to encourage everyone to go to an exchange if they ever have that opportunity, because it’s going to be one of the best experiences of their life, not only for what they´re going to learn, but for all the places and people they will meet.

Les Lettres françaises Cher M. Djib, À cause du film avec vous et votre mère, Kiné, j’ai trouvé votre histoire. M. Djib, vous présentez un très bon exemple du mouvement vers la modernité. D'abord, votre idée pour votre organisation c’est très moderne, parce que le voyage autour du Sénégal va agrandir votre connaissance et cela va vous donner une nouvelle idée de l'identité de l’Afrique. Je pense que vous allez réaliser vos rêves d'être président, parce que votre mère, elle vous a donné les opportunités pour une éducation moderne, et vous connaissez et vous avez adopté l’identité africaine contemporaine. Vous savez que l’Afrique a besoin d’adopter les idées d'égalité moderne, ou l’Afrique de vos parents va rester dans le passé.

C’est aussi noble et moderne de vous quand vous avez défendu votre mère contre votre père et le père d’Aby. Vous avez reconnu les idées obsolètes, et vous les bravez. A mon avis, c’est vous qui êtes le plus moderne de votre famille. J'espère que vous continuerez vers votre but, parce que si vous êtes président, je sais que le Sénégal, et après toute l’Afrique va trouver le chemin de modernité.

Bonjour Djib!

Tu es mon personnage préféré dans le film Faat Kiné. Je suis contente que tu tiennes tête à la tradition que ton père pense être très important. Je pense que tes valeurs sont très morales et à mon avis, ton père doit te donner du respect. J’admire ton courage et je sais qu’il est très difficile ; la tradition dit que tu dois respecter les personnes plus âgées, mais je sais qu’elles ne sont pas correctes tout le temps. Je suis d’accord avec ta décision d’ignorer les conseils de ton père. Bien que les valeurs de tradition soient importantes, le temps change et la modernité est valable aussi. À mon avis, tu es plus mûr que ton père bien que tu sois plus jeune. Je pense que tu peux travailler où tu veux, c’est ta décision, pas la décision de ton père ou de ta mère. J’admire ton ambition de devenir le président du Sénégal. Je crois que tu as la bravoure et le courage qui sont nécessaires pour guider les gens. Aussi, j’admire ta mère et je ne pense pas que tu doives lui trouver un partenaire. Je sais que tu penses que ta mère cherche quelqu’un qui puisse l’aider, mais je pense que ta mère est indépendante et peut s’occuper d’elle -même. Mais, je suis contente que tu cherches oncle Jean parce qu’il est poli et respecte Faat Kiné.

Après avoir réussi le bac, quels sont tes plans ? Est -ce que tu veux rester au Sénégal avec ta mère ou travailler au Canada avec Aby ? Qu’est -ce que tu feras si ton père veut entrer dans ta vie ? Je pense que tu es mûr et peux t’occuper de la situation. Je sais que tu dois choisir la bonne décision. Tu as de nombreuses opportunités, je recommande que tu les utilises.

Vous êtes une très grande inspiration pour moi, donc j’ai des questions et pensées pour vous.

Vous êtes la femme la plus forte que je connaisse. Je suis sûre que vous soyez plus forte que la plupart des hommes parce que vous devez prouver que vous êtes capable d'être indépendante. Vous avez élevé vos enfants seule, sans l’aide d’un homme. Qu’est -ce que c’est d'élever vos enfants toute seule ? Et comment est-ce que vos enfants se sentent d'être élevé sans père ?

Je ne connais personne qui soit plus courageuse que toi. Vous trouvez des moyens pour élever vos enfants pour devenir très accomplis. Je suis très impressionnée avec votre voix forte dans une société qui réprime souvent les femmes. C’est une action plus moderne que les actions de la plupart des femmes au Sénégal. Est -ce que vous pensez que vous êtes plus moderne que les autres femmes ? Et est -ce que vous pensez que le Sénégal est un pays où les femmes peuvent être plus fortes et accomplies que les hommes?

Moi, je pense que le Sénégal est un pays ou la modernité et la tradition sont très présentes.

Par exemple, il y a les femmes comme vous qui luttent pour les droits des femmes, et elles sont les gens les plus forts qu’on puisse rencontrer. Mais, il y a aussi les gens qui ne veulent pas lutter pour les droits des femmes, et ils sont les gens plus traditionnels. J'espère que vous continuez à lutter pour les femmes et pour l'égalité au Sénégal. Merci!

Le Pain Par Anthony Hu ‘20 Je me souviens de ma première expérience en France. Après avoir débarqué l’avion à Paris, je me rappelle une odeur mystérieuse qui a inondé mes narines : une odeur qui avait des aspects familiers, mais, en réalité, se sentait complètement étrange. Je savais que ce que je sentais n'était qu’une boulangerie. Cependant, la vérité que cela venait de France a fasciné mon imagination. Peut -être c’est parce que le blé français est différent. Peut -être que c’est parce que les boulangeries françaises utilisent moins de sucre. Néanmoins, pour moi, c’est à cause de l’histoire riche associée avec la France et ses produits.

Pour moi, des pains français n'étaient pas seulement des baguettes. Elles étaient la raison pour laquelle le peuple français a commencé une révolution qui a inspiré le monde. Elles étaient la nourriture des soldats de la résistance en 1942 - des gens qui ne connaissaient jamais la définition de se rendre. Et, bien que je ne sois qu’un garçon - un garçon qui n’a jamais enduré des situations graves comme celles des soldats - l'idée que je pouvais devenir une partie de cette histoire en mangeant un morceau de pain m’encapsulait.

Pour moi, la France était l’accueil des héros. Que ce soit Napoléon, qui a touché des cœurs de tous les Français, ou Camus, qui nous a enseigné des façons de triompher dans nos propres cœurs, dans ma tête, de faire quelque chose de français est la même chose que de faire quelque chose d’héroïque. Je voulais être un héros. Je voulais manger ce pain.

Dans ce scénario, qu'est-ce que j’ai fait ? Je me comportais comme un vrai héros : je suppliais. « Maman ! Est-ce que tu pourrais m'acheter ce pain ? S’il te plaît ? » j’ai imploré. « Non ! Le pain de l'aéroport est trop cher ! » ma mère a répondu. « Mais, s’il te plaaaaaît? » j’ai supplié.

Finalement, ma mère a acquiescé. Sans enthousiasme, ma mère a acheté une baguette et me l’a donnée. Alors, J’ai reçu mon pain et j’étais surexcité. J’avais hâte de faire partie d’une culture héroïque.

Rapidement, j’ai ouvert ma bouche - plus large que l’état de Texas - et je mâchais bruyamment du pain. En espérant ressembler à mes modèles, mon esprit a flotté avec des rêves de grandeur. En voulant accélérer le processus de devenir un héros, je mangeais absolument vite et attendais la métamorphose.

Elle ne s’est jamais passée.

J'étais comme j’avais été. Je voulais être différent, mais ça n'était pas le cas. Manger de la baguette ne changeait rien - juste le montant d’argent que ma mère avait. J’aurais pensé que j’aurais été déçu, mais ça n'était pas le cas. Je restais moi-même, et ça suffisait. Je me suis rendu compte que tous les rêves, toutes les idées, tout était dans ma tête. Ce qui est le plus important est ce que je pense. En outre, ce qui est français n'est pas les illusions d’héroïsme mais c’est ce que les Français pensent.

Oui, pour moi, la France reste l’accueil des héros. Mais maintenant, c’est plus. La France sera toujours dans mon cœur pour être l’endroit qui m’encourage de penser plus clairement. Et, en quittant l'aéroport avec une autre baguette (car la première était trop délicieuse !), je suis prêt à explorer une culture vraiment magnifique.

Mi Viaje a New York Por Candela Hola soy Candela, alumna de intercambio de España.

Para comenzar, me gustaría decir que la ciudad me ha encantado. Ver tantos enormes rascacielos impresiona bastante, y es lo que más me llamó la atención a primera vista, pero personalmente lo que más me ha gustado ha sido Times Square junto con el observatorio del One World Trade Center. Ambos lugares eran realmente espectaculares, y nunca había visto nada parecido.

Por otra parte, si tengo que decir lo que menos me ha gustado diría que había muchísima gente por las calles y eso puede ser un poco agobiante, pero realmente tampoco era un problema.

Personalmente, lo que más me ha impactado de Nueva York son los enormes edificios que había por todas partes, los enormes paneles publicitarios de Times Square, y la enorme diversidad cultural que hay en la ciudad.

Si tengo que destacar varias grandes diferencias culturales que tiene Nueva York respecto a España, diría que son los horarios , pues comienzan el día antes lo cual es bueno porque se aprovecha más; y los grupos de personas, pues al ser una de las ciudades más importantes del mundo tiene una gran diversidad.

Sinceramente yo no me veo viviendo en Nueva York en un futuro, pues me considero una persona tranquila y tanta gente y ruido me agobiaría un poco, pero estoy convencida de que quiero volver y visitar muchas cosas más.

Para terminar, me gustaría decir que los ciudadanos de NY son muy diferentes entre sí: hay enormes diferencias culturales, a la hora de vestir, muchos idiomas y la verdad que eso me ha encantado especialmente.

Mi Viaje a España Por Jenna Rothenstein ‘21 Este verano tuve la oportunidad de vivir en Barcelona, España durante un mes. Mi viaje fue a través de un programa y había unos 60 niños más en mi viaje. Sólo conocía a otra chica en antes de mi viaje, así que fue un poco aterrador, pero estaba muy emocionada de conocer gente nueva. Cuando todos nos reunimos en el aeropuerto JFK para irnos a Barcelona, conocí mucha gente que se convertiría en algunos de mis muy buenos amigos. Después de un largo viaje en avión, finalmente llegué a Barcelona. El lugar donde me quedé estaba un poco fuera del centro de la ciudad, era un pequeño pueblo llamado Bonanova.

Todos los días en Barcelona mis amigos y yo nos despertábamos, desayunábamos, nos preparábamos y nos íbamos a la ciudad. En mi viaje, tenía mucha libertad, así que todos los días mis amigos y yo tomábamos el metro por nosotros mismos en el centro de la ciudad. Siempre me sentí muy segura en el metro. Cuando llegué, mis amigos y yo fuimos a las electivas para las que todos nos inscribimos. Me inscribí para el servicio de la comunidad, de modo que mis otros amigos y yo caminaríamos una milla de la estación de metro a donde iba hacer mi trabajo de servicio comunitario. El lugar principal donde trabajé se llamaba Sant'Egidio. Todos los días con Sant'Egidio se me asignaba una tarea que hacer para mi servicio comunitario. Por ejemplo, ayudaría a empacar bolsas de comida para personas sin hogar, pintar sobre graffitis, visitar hogares de ancianos y cantar para ellos, ayudar en los campamentos de día de los niños, recoger la basura de las calles, y mucho más. Trabajar con Sant'Egidio fue la mejor experiencia.

Mis partes favoritas del servicio comunitario fueron cuando visitaba los hogares de ancianos y los campamentos de día para niños porque pude hablar español con tanta gente allí. Estoy tan feliz de poder marcar la diferencia en una comunidad y ayudar a otros en mi viaje a Barcelona.

No sólo estaba haciendo servicio comunitario todos los días en Barcelona, sino que también hice muchas visitas y exploración de la cultura española. Visité muchos lugares famosos de la ciudad y todos eran espectaculares. Muchos de los lugares que visité fueron creados por Antoni Gaudí, un arquitecto catalán. Uno de los lugares memorables que visité fue La Sagrada Familia, creada por Gaudí. Me sorprendió la compleja arquitectura de la iglesia. Otra de las obras de Gaudí que visité fue el Parque Güell. Los jardines y el paisaje del parque eran tan impresionantes y fue sin duda uno de mis lugares favoritos que visité. Otro lugar que visité fue la Fuente Mágica de Montjuic. Cuando fuimos a Montjuic había miles de personas reunidas alrededor de la fuente para una actuación. Había muchas luces parpadeando un millón de colores diferentes cuando el agua salpicaba por todas partes, fue extraordinario.

Aunque visité muchos lugares inolvidables en Barcelona, mi parte favorita del viaje fue toda la comida increíble que comí. No tuve una mala comida en Barcelona. Algunos de mis nuevos alimentos favoritos que probé incluyen patatas bravas, paella, jamón ibérico, crema catalana, y croquetas. La mejor comida que comí en el viaje fue de un mercado al aire libre llamado La Boqueria donde tuve las mejores patatas bravas que jamás he tenido. Barcelona es una ciudad con mucho que ofrecer desde todos los lugares increíbles hasta todos los deliciosos alimentos, me alegro de haber tenido la oportunidad de explorar la cultura española allí.

En general, mi viaje a Barcelona fue increíble. Logre ver lo que es vivir en un país extranjero y me alegro de haber decidido tener esta experiencia en España. No solo prendí mucho sobre la cultura española, sino también mucho sobre la lengua española. Me convertí en un hablante de español mucho mejor después de esta experiencia y estoy muy agradecida de haber podido tener la oportunidad de ir en este viaje.

My Life in Spain (English Translation of the Previous Article)

By Jenna Rothenstein ‘21 This summer I had the opportunity to live in Barcelona, Spain for a month. My trip was through a program and there were about 60 other kids on my trip. I only knew one other girl on my trip so it was a bit scary, but I was really excited to meet new people. When everyone met up at the JFK airport to leave for Barcelona I met so many people who would soon become some of my really good friends. After a long plane ride, I finally arrived in Barcelona. The place where I stayed was a little bit outside of the inner city, it was a small town called Bonanova.

Every day in Barcelona my friends and I would wake up, eat breakfast, get ready, and head out into the city. On my trip, I had a lot of freedom so every day my friends and I would take the metro by ourselves into the inner city. I always felt very safe in the metro. When I arrived, my friends and I would all go to the electives that we signed up for. I signed up for community service so my other friends and I would walk about a mile from the metro station to where I did my community service work. The main place where I worked was called Sant’Egidio. Every day with Sant’Egidio I would be assigned a task to do for my community service. For example, I would help pack food bags for the homeless, paint over graffiti, visit elderly homes and sing for them, help out at children day camps, pick up trash from the streets, and so much more. Working with Sant'Egidio was the best experience. My favorite parts from the community service were when I would visit the elderly homes and children day camps because I was able to speak Spanish with so many people there. I am so happy that I was able to make a difference in the community and help others on my trip to Barcelona.

Not only was I doing community service every day in Barcelona, but I also did a lot of sightseeing and exploration of the Spanish culture. I visited many famous locations in the city and they were all spectacular. Many of the places that I visited were created by Antoni Gaudí, a Catalan architect. One of the memorable places I visited was La Sagrada Familia, created by Gaudí. I was amazed by the complex architecture of the church. Another one of Gaudí’s works that I visited was Park Güell. The gardens and the scenery of the park were so impressive and it was definitely one of my favorite spots that I visited. Another place I visited was the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. When we went to Montjuïc there were thousands of people gathered around the fountain for the performance. There were so many lights flashing a million different colors as the water splashed everywhere, it was extraordinary. Although I visited many unforgettable places in Barcelona, my favorite part of the trip was all the amazing food I ate. I did not have one bad meal in Barcelona. Some of my favorite new foods that I tried include patatas bravas, paella, jamón ibérico, crema Catalana, y croquettes. The best food I had on the trip was from an outdoor market called La Boqueria where I had the best patatas bravas I’ve ever had. Barcelona is a city with a lot to offer from all the amazing locations to all the delicious foods, I’m glad I had the opportunity to explore the Spanish culture there.

Overall, my trip to Barcelona was amazing. I got to see what it was like to live in a foreign country and I’m glad that I decided to have this experience in Spain. I learned so much about not only the Spanish culture but also a lot about the Spanish language as a whole. I became a much better Spanish speaker from this experience and I am very grateful that I was able to have the opportunity to go on this trip.
