Dear Friends,

Happy 259th year, GA! This year the Academy opened with 1,159 students, and we are proud to have a stellar senior class of 140 Patriots. Of these 140, 37 are ‘lifers’ or ‘real lifers’ (entering in K or PreK), while 60 have been ‘around the Quad’ at GA, meaning they have been students in all three divisions. Each grade adds new members every step of the way, with 6th and 9th grades remaining the largest entry points after Lower School, and with growing applicant pools in atypical years like 8th or 10th grades as families move to the area or discover the unparalleled opportunities GA offers and eagerly embrace our ‘126 acres of amazing.’ Ultimately each grade becomes its own constellation, with the stars aligning in unique ways, radiating their own beauty and magic.

Once graduated, our Patriots pursue an incredibly diverse range of careers, from life-changing scientists to entrepreneurial innovators. In the pages to follow you’ll find a few highlights of alumni/ae who have gone on to work in different aspects of the entertainment field. In particular we’re focusing on the film industry, but we keep close tabs on our creative alums who shine in the worlds of theater, art, and music as well. Hearing your stories of the manifold ways a GA education opens opportunity’s doors inspires our current students and warms the hearts of our hard-working faculty. Please share your stories with your proud alma mater!

Speaking of, I am personally grateful to the many Patriots whose names are listed within this edition of The Patriot, who also supported GA by contributing this past year to the Annual Fund and other special initiatives. These gifts offer GA faculty the opportunity to build upon our traditional core programs and to challenge students with new courses, skills, and approaches to learning. It is inspiring that so many members of our community continue to demonstrate their pride in our school by making GA a philanthropic priority.

We hope to welcome record crowds to this year’s GA-PC Day, November 10. Whether it’s your reunion year or just a chance to revel in the fun spectacle of the senses that will be the 132nd anniversary of our rivalry, please join us for what promises to be a slew of exciting athletic contests at home.

A special party was held for Kindergarten students and teachers at the Head of If you haven’t been here for a while, GA-PC is the perfect School’s residence in May. Students loved jumping in the bounce house, playing opportunity to reconnect and marvel at how our campus cornhole, and especially loved meeting my dog, Gretel! continues to transform to meet the evolving needs of our students. This year we are especially excited about the completion of the first phase of Lower School projects geared toward infusing just enough of the 21st century into our earliest years to be ahead of the curve while still maintaining the cozy, ’cottage-style’ feel of our elementary classrooms. Please read more inside about our fantastic new Tinker Lab, renovated science labs, security-enhancing space additions, and, after just 258 years, central heat and air!

ROBIN BISSELL ’86: FROM BELFRY STAR TO HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR

“You’re Hired!”

Every seasoned Hollywood player has their own tale about how they broke into the most competitive industry in America.

Robin Bissell ’86 is no exception.

At the age of 27, the former Belfry Club star found himself in one of those odd moments of life. He was ready to move on from his band, Everything, and give the movie business a try, so he called a friend on the inside to see if she knew of any openings. Fortunately, she did know of one position, a job as a director’s assistant on a little film called Pleasantville. Being a good friend, she set up an interview for Bissell, who eagerly met with a young producer, who immediately tried to convince him that this was not a position for the tired nor the weary.

“For 15 minutes he tried to talk me out of the job. ’Hard, grunt work,’” recalled Bissell, who moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to be a singer-songwriter and earned a record deal with his bandmates.

As fate would have it, like a scene right out of the movies, Bissell, who had no previous

experience in the industry, forgot to ask for a script and went back inside where the producer was talking with the film’s director, Gary Ross.

“This is the guy I was telling you about, Gary,” said the producer.

Ross, who has won several prestigious awards and been nominated for four Academy Awards, had two words for Bissell: “You’re hired!”

“I definitely got a lucky break,” said Bissell.

“A couple of them. I was thrown onto a $40 million film and into a world I knew nothing about. I made a million mistakes along the way.”

Bissell’s second big break, besides meeting his wife, Krista, on the set of Pleasantville, came during the post-production of the hit 1998 film. Pleasantville was filmed entirely in color, but, due to the storyline, Bissell and his colleagues had to digitize 163,000 frames of 35-millimeter film for the purpose of removing most colors and manipulating others. According to The American Society of Cinematographers’ website, “this type of image conversion and manipulation has been routinely done in

commercials, but never before in a liveaction, feature-length film.”

“We literally put film into a computer to make it black and white,” said Bissell. “In 1997, computers were very slow; the proper technology did not exist. The entire floor of our office became a tech office.”

Post-production (editing) on films typically averages between four to six months, but this process took Bissell and company 15 months, which allowed him to earn an associate producer’s credit and really opened the floodgates for his career. Bissell went on to work as an executive producer on blockbusters like Seabiscuit,The Tale of Despereaux,The Hunger Games, and Free State of Jones.

Director’s Chair

Twenty-two years after landing his first job on a movie set, Bissell has officially made the jump from producer’s seat to the director’s chair. The GA graduate is making his directorial debut with The Best of Enemies, which is scheduled to premiere later this year. Bissell wrote the screenplay for the film, which was inspired by Osha Gray Davidson’s book The Best of Enemies:

“I knew I was suited for directing,” said Bissell. “I was a songwriter prior to the movie business, but I wasn’t entirely sure I could write.”

The Best of Enemies is the incredible and true story of Civil Rights activist Ann Atwater in her public face-off against Claiborne Paul (C.P.) Ellis, a segregationist turned Civil Rights activist.

“In 2005, I saw this blurb of Ellis in Time Magazine. My radar went up. That’s pretty amazing I thought. I wonder how that happened?” said Bissell. “I finally got my hands on the book. I started doing a small documentary made in Durham called An Unlikely Friendship. I started seeing how this guy changed. It was really due to this woman named Ann Atwater, an amazing activist, and this guy named Bill Riddick. It just became really clear to me why I wanted to tell this story. That change drew me to the project—why he changed. He started to realize that he had very similar problems and challenges like people of the opposite race.”

Bissell bought the rights to Davidson’s book in 2012. He then met with the Atwater and Ellis families to learn more before finishing the script in 2014. He

faced the same challenges that all first-time and independent movie directors face in terms of funding, but he scored big votes of confidence when Taraji P. Henson (Academy Award nominee – Best Supporting Actress - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) signed on to play Atwater and Sam Rockwell (Academy Award winner – Best Supporting Actor – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) came on to play Ellis.

“Taraji loves Ann Atwater,” said Bissell. “She loved the script.

She is larger than life. Her eyes and voice are so powerful. We didn’t have a lot of time to rehearse, but she came prepared.

And Sam threw himself into the role. He’s amazing. He’s a joy to work with. I just got so lucky with these two lead actors. They got it. There was never a time I was stumped.”

Babou Ceesay (Rogue One: A StarWars Story), Anne Heche, Wes Bentley, Bruce McGill, Tony Award-winner John Gallagher Jr., and Nick Searcy (The Shape of Water) round out the key cast. Actor Tobey Maguire is among the producers.

“For me, really, this movie was about labels— these labels these people put on each other,” said Bissell. “They ended up very similar people. When they got to know each other it wasn’t about race, it was about class… I really had some clarity after the movie. We are living in a twodimensional world. With TV, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram it’s literally twodimensional. We label each other with words and catchphrases, but it’s important to see people as three-dimensionally as we can. I really wanted to see Ellis as a threedimensional person, not a two-dimensional person, as he saw Atwater.”

“I was drawn to the story alone, not thinking about current political issues,” continued Bissell. “I think the only thing I thought was, ‘boy, if this thing turns out well, it could be meaningful.’”

A Day Dreamer

By his own admission, Bissell was very much a day dreamer at GA.

“I was a guy who you would expect to go to LA and try to get into the movie business,” said Bissell, who transferred to GA before the start of ninth grade. “I wasn’t the perfect student.”

But, a number of teachers and coaches, including Peter McVeigh 1760, Roger Eastlake ’59, Ted Haynie 1760, Peter "Doc" Drewniany 1760, and Edwin Probert II 1760, saw Bissell’s passion and, like they did with so many students over the years, encouraged and guided him along the way.

“They saw I was wide-eyed, and I wanted to expand my scope of life and do something extraordinary,” said Bissell. “For me, when I got to GA, my outlook on the future changed. I noticed that everyone had a different eye for the future—it felt like there was no limit for my new set of friends. It’s like, ‘what can we do to have some sort of impact?’ I think that was great, and I think that was instilled in me…It was the best decision my parents ever made.”

Bissell was active in the Belfry Club where he played the leads and served as club president his senior year. He was also a member of the Barbershoppers, the Madrigals, choir, and ski club, as well as the golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis teams.

But really, it was Belfry that had the biggest impact on him.

“Belfry was a huge part of my time there,” said Bissell. “Mr. Probert and Doc—I learned a lot from them. They are lovely people, and I owe them a lot; they are just so passionate for storytelling.”

That passion now lives inside Bissell, and he is able to share it with the world.

GA’S OWN ANT-MAN –ANDREW BARRER

journey was no different.

After graduating from GA, he studied in the Gallatain School of Individualized Study at NewYork University where he was given the opportunity to design his own major.

Ironically, he only took one screenwriting class.

For as long as Andrew Barrer ’02 can remember, he has always wanted to write…even before he could write.

“That was my one and only dream,” said Barrer.

Barrer, now a much in-demand writer and producer, certainly isn’t dreaming anymore. He and his writing partner, Gabriel Ferrari, have been just a tad bit busy. Their latest project is AntMan and The Wasp, the blockbuster sequel to Ant-Man (2015). Ant-Man, the first film in Marvel Studio’s latest series, starred Paul Rudd and topped $500 million worldwide according to an October 29, 2015 Forbes Magazine article.

Marvel tapped Barrer and Ferrari to work on the last round of rewrites for Ant-Man and, fortunately for them, they quickly developed a good working relationship with Rudd while working on set, which opened the door to them being asked to co-write the entire screenplay for Ant-Man and The Wasp.

“Writing movies was always a part of that [dream], but became my focus only after college,” said Barrer.

In an ultra-competitive movie industry, there is no super hero power that opens the door to instant success for writers. It usually takes years of hard work and persistence. Barrer’s

“I was just a massive fan of movies and learned by example,” said Barrer.

Barrer’s big break came when a script (Die in a Gunfight) he co-wrote with Ferrari landed on the radar screen of Hollywood studios.

“Things progressed from there,” said Barrer. “Ant-Man didn’t come around until after we spent a handful of years working on studio screenplays that never went into production. There’s a lot of unglamorous struggle in this business, and we were no exception.”

Barrer and Ferrari are currently finishing up two studio screenplays, getting ready to pitch a vision for a third screenplay, and working on creating a television show based on a Stephen King short story.

“GA really puts a focus on teaching kids how to express their ideas,” said Barrer. “All that focus on essay writing, and the wealth of opportunity in the English department, builds students who are really well prepared to get their point across. That’s an invaluable skill.

A few years back, I went to a screening for American Hustle, and there was a Q&A with the entire cast after the movie.

When Bradley Cooper (GA Class of 1993) spoke, he was noticeably articulate. I remember thinking, ‘That’s GA.’”

COOPER TO STAR IN NEW MOVIE

Actor Bradley Cooper ’93 is making his directorial debut in A Star is Born, which will star Cooper and Lady Gaga. The much-anticipated musical romantic drama film, which will be released in theaters on October 5, was co-written by Cooper. It’s a remake of the 1937 film of the same name and follows a hard-drinking country musician (Cooper) who discovers and falls in love with a young singer (Gaga). The movie will also feature Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle, and Sam Elliott.

Q&A WITH

GORDON ’09 AND MANDY ’11 FREAS

The talented brother and sister team of Gordon ’09 and Mandy ’11 Freas, who make up the team at Clementine Pictures, were named to Sony’s list of the "Top 10 Emerging Filmmakers of 2018" and were also the grand prize winners of Sony PlayStation’s "Emerging Filmmakers Program” in which they sold their concept for Hyperreal, an original sci-fi show that follows the lives of the researchers and test subjects of the world’s first seamless virtual reality engine. The pilot episode of Hyperreal will be available to watch on PlayStation Vue later this year. Over the last few years, the Freas siblings have created original content for Amazon Prime, Spotify, Wired, and Billboard.

Congratulations! How did this all come about?

Gordon: The concept for Hyperreal started as an idea that I had in college for a short film which later grew into an idea for a series. This was a few years before big sci-fi shows like Westworld were on TV. And for a while that’s all it was. We resurrected the idea when we learned Sony was looking for pitches and developed a more detailed treatment.

What other projects have you worked on or are you working on?

Mandy:We have produced work for various clients, including the series Mixtape for Billboard.

Gordon was the writer/director,

and I produced it. In fact, that is usually how we split the work on the projects we do together. I produce, Gordon writes and directs. Currently, Gordon and I are working on our feature film called Bluebird Day. We are in pre-production now, but filming should start in September.

Gordon: Before Anyone Else is a web series (Amazon Prime) I wrote, directed, and produced in college with the help of a lot of fellow students. It was my first real foray into creative filmmaking beyond short films and sketches and making it basically served as my very own film school.

Were you making films together as kids?

Mandy:We made a stop motion film with our younger brother’s train set when we were 9 and 10.

We had an old Sony camera, and we did all of the editing for the film in camera, meaning we would stop and rewind the film to get the shots we wanted, editing and filming it as we went along. As soon as we were finished we ran upstairs to show our brother our film.

Lower School Reimagined

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the administration’s recommendation to update our Lower School facilities through a multiphased plan that matches GA’s innovative educational program and to bolster security measures for our youngest learners, while also maintaining the cottage-feel of the classrooms. Thanks to extremely generous donors and the Board’s allocation of budgeted capital improvement funds, we have been able to make the dream of Phase 1 for the Lower School come true.

When our PreK-5th grade students return in September, they will have modernized science labs and an expanded, permanent, cuttingedge 21st century Lower School Tinker Lab at their disposal. To maximize our security efforts, we are constructing one universal Lower School front entrance, with an expanded lobby area, and we are enclosing the Leas Hall Porch. In addition, we are creating a new Lower School office suite and faculty room, completing the replacement of all GA boilers, and have installed HVAC in the Lower School so that the classrooms have central heat and air.

GA now looks forward to focusing its fundraising efforts on Phase 2: a new Lower School Library and Learning Commons! Designed to ignite students’ passion for reading, research and collaboration, the new space will also offer a community hub to further strengthen the partnership between the faculty, students, and their families.

ACADEMY SCHOLARS

Led by Upper School Math Teacher Sue Negro and Middle School History Teacher Mark Stephens 1760, the Academy Scholars Program is not a program in the sense of a course of learning defined by the school; it is an opportunity for students with a passion for scholarship, creative writing, visual art, performing art, or research (in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities) to pursue that passion by means of developing and working on a significant, independent project. This year’s program graduates explain their multi-year projects:

Andrew Piszek ’18 “I chose to learn how to write and perform music, and create a CD as my Academy Scholars project.My project was difficult to start. I fumbled around with chords and half written melodies until I started working with John Faye at Forge Recording. He guided me through the process of songwriting and helped me develop a system of creating music that works for me. I am not sure of how many actual hours I spent on my project, but it is really rewarding to have created a CD of five original songs.”

David Fakhraee ’18 “My project is a multimedia work aimed to bring about a greater knowledge and appreciation of Iran. I was inspired by my love of art, sculpture, writing, poetry, music, and my own Iranian heritage. I decided to make a film to combine all these into one piece of work. I also composed many songs and made a CD with a cover, booklet and everything. I wrote three scripts for my film, many poems, and created many pieces of art. After three

years of hard work, it feels great to have a great body of work including my film/ documentary, my artwork, writings, music, and poetry to give to the world. Even though my project is completed, my work is never truly done because it is my passion that I will continue for life.”

Anjalee Bhuyan ’18 “Bharatanatyam is a three thousand-yearold dance form that originated in the ancient Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu, India. Navanritya is a contemporary dance form that combines everything from folk dance, martial arts and yoga, to other classical dance forms. I have studied both styles for over ten years, and now I instruct at my dance school, Nava Nritya Dance Academy. Through this project and the film I produced, I hoped to learn about the cultural impact I could have on the community in my dance school and at GA through these dance forms.”

A PERFECT MATCH

Germantown Academy is pleased to announce that the school was approved for a 2:1 matching grant from The E.E. Ford Foundation for the GA Experience Program (GAXP). GAXP is offered at no cost to Upper School students and faculty who want to have an extraordinary, challenging, engaging experience connecting our mission and the world in a meaningful way.

During the 2018-19 school year, GA hopes to raise $200,000 from our community to receive a $100,000 grant from the Foundation. The Foundation’s grant will provide the funds necessary to continue to offer GAXP for the next few years, while the raised dollars will assist in launching a permanent program endowment to eventually provide these enriching and memorable learning experiences for Upper School students for years to come.

One of this year’s GAXP programs involved seven students and three faculty on a hike of an old loggers trail in Loyalsock State Forest in Dushore, PA.The group completed a 30mile loop hike and camped five nights on the trail.

Roberta (Bobbie) Crane Devlin 1760

For a woman who taught GA’s youngest learners for more than 40 years, it is amazing that Bobbie Devlin can recognize most of them as adults. At the recent wedding of Kristyn Holmes ’04, several members of her Kindergarten class in 1991-92– Matt Shearon ’06, Julia Hoff ’04, Kristin Frisbie ’04, and Peter Duryea ’04 (pictured right) helped her reminisce about days gone by as they danced the night away.

“The last few weeks of teaching at GA were really emotional. On Field Day, I cried all the way to the field and all the way back because I knew I wasn’t going to be there the next year. I had a hard time leaving GA. I had to go to the doctor because I thought maybe I made the wrong decision.”

“Miss Crane vs. Mrs. Devlin. When I run into GA alumni and they call me ‘Miss Crane’ I know they are former, former, former students. It always makes me laugh when I see them in the grocery store and at Wawa. I was always so happy when I taught the children of former students. When I see the families, I love reminiscing about the years we shared together.”

“The most important lesson I imparted on my students was to learn to socialize. I am glad to have missed the whole electronics business we have today. I was always interested in the whole child: physically, mentally, and socially.”

“After I retired, I learned to play golf. I just wanted to keep busy at the time. Now I am so busy that I don’t know how I had time to teach! Golf is great for my health, and I have met so many wonderful people through golf who have become very good friends.

DUKE-BOUND PATRIOT HONORED BY TRIANGLE CLUB

Senior student-athlete Mackenzie Pluck ’18 was honored by the Triangle Club of Montgomery County for her outstanding accomplishments in athletics, academics, and community service at the 55th annual William F. Dannehower Banquet, where the Duke University soccer recruit was the recipient of a scholarship prize.

"Winning this award allowed me to reflect on what I have accomplished throughout my high school experience in not only

athletics, but in academics and community service as well," said Pluck. "I was able to step back and acknowledge how far I have come, yet also stay motivated to continue the hard work in the next chapter of my life. Receiving this award reminded me how fortunate I am for all of those who have helped me along the way, including family, friends, coaches, and teammates."

During her time at GA, Pluck was an active member of the Honors Arts Program and Community Service Organization. Out on the soccer pitch, Pluck, a midfielder and forward, had an unbelievable career here, finishing with 80 goals and 41 assists. As a sophomore, she played a key role in helping the Patriots win the 2015 Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Tournament title.

The biggest similarity between teaching and golf is PATIENCE. That attribute rules both of those worlds.”

“The whole atmosphere of GA was the best part of my life. Each year I attend the end of year luncheon in memory of Joanne Finegan, who was the best teacher I had ever met. It’s still fun to chat with her family there, and we often reminisce about Joanne. It’s fun to meet new GA teachers and learn what their stories are. I always ask them what they think their futures are at GA.”

“Although I do NOT miss the faculty meetings we used to have, I am glad to be involved in the GARTERS group (Germantown Academy Retired Teachers Enjoying Retirement). We all taught in Lower School and we meet monthly for lunch. There are currently 16 people and it keeps growing every year! I love that I am never far away from GA.”

Checking in on the BEARD

During one normal Friday afternoon in early February, Middle School and Upper School Library Department Head Mary Fraser was struck by what she saw as she strolled through the Beard Center for Innovation (BCI).

“Yoga, coding, ISP’ing (Innovation and Special Programs), and engineering—all ages, lots of disciplines, and a beautiful space for it all to unfold!” said Fraser.

Since it opened in September 2015 as a complement to the resources found in Roberts Family Library and GA classrooms, students and faculty from all three divisions regularly use the BCI during and after the school day.

“The BCI provides a unique environment for small group collaboration, and for engaging in work that expands upon the learning opportunities provided by the more traditional Harkness Table classrooms,” said Fraser. “With the versatility of the space and tools available in the BCI, students can flow from conducting traditional research in the Roberts Family Library, to brainstorming, planning and prototyping as they move towards the creation of a final product. My favorite feature as both a teacher and student in the BCI are the writable panels we call the big think boards. Students use these boards for working through all sorts of ideas and materials—sketching diagrams, reviewing formulas, working out equations, reviewing research questions, and outlining papers and course material.

Lower School Art Teacher Alia Tahvildaran taught her Kindergarten – Second Grade students how the laser cutter and 3D printer work. Her Kindergarten students made laser engraved self-portraits while first grade students made laser engraved keychains with dog drawings for Home at Last Dog Rescue and second grade students made laser cut stencils for needle felting.

Kindergarten and Upper School students came together with Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) science experiments in The MakerSpace.

“There is something special and powerful about traveling to a space that is used by the older students,” said Fifth Grade Teacher Lauren Vanin, who also serves as the school-wide design thinking trainer and facilitator.

“When we travel through the library to get to the BCI, my students look around with wonder and excitement, as well as a sense of belonging, that they too can learn and explore in this innovative space.”

3rd – 5th grade students used the Morphi 3D app in conjunction with the 3D printers to create models and 3D projects.

They also had the opportunity to Skype with the CEO of Morphi.

Marnie McDonald’s third grade students used the BCI for their monthly STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) challenges. “The minute they step in the space they immediately know that they are going to be challenged to build something that solves a problem,” said McDonald. “ They utilize the floor to ceiling white boards to brainstorm and plan, and then step into the lab to construct and share.”

Seventh grade students used the laser cutter in The MakerSpace to complete a 3D project in conjunction with Fahrenheit 451.

Symbols which students felt represented major themes were constructed from 3D printers and textual evidence was etched on wooden boxes that were laser cut for component assembly.

Upper School Honors Engineering students called The MakerSpace their classroom as it’s the perfect room for them to tinker and build underwater devices, robots, and rockets for classroom-based competitions.

“I love what producing a play does for the students,” David Nagel said after the inaugural performance of “First Stop, Ellis Island” in May. “A production like this allows them to live the mission in every way. They worked collaboratively putting the show together; they performed in front of their parents and peers, which breeds confidence; they were honorable to each other in learning their lines and taking responsibility for being on time to rehearsals; and by creating the backdrop and the costumes and changing or adding words where appropriate, they demonstrated independent thinking.”

Not only did the 4th grade students find compassion for the characters they were playing, but they also learned empathy for

each other along the way. Some students are uncomfortable speaking in front of others, while others may have just found their “life calling.” There was mutual respect among the classmates, which in turn made everyone feel that their parts truly mattered.

“The content of the play was dovetailed perfectly into our annual study of family,” Nagel said. “Students researched their own family histories, while also learning about the immigrant experience in our country. When we went to Ellis Island, that was a powerful moment that I believe the kids really took to heart.”

MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERS

This school year, the 6th Grade partnered with the Meals on Wheels Norristown chapter to complete a new service project.

Although the main purpose of the program is to feed homebound seniors, volunteers also take time to ensure that the recipients see a friendly face each day.

The Class of 2024 spent the better portion of this school year working in advisories to design a project that could be replicated and would meet their shared goal of bringing smiles to the faces of the 140 seniors. Creativity ranged from origami candy boxes and custom calendars with inspirational quotes to puzzle books and individually designed clay coasters.

This spring, in front of the Middle School community, student representatives from each advisory had the privilege of presenting their projects to Melissa Buckminster, the coordinator for the Norristown Meals on Wheels program, and to Mrs. Lucille Pearlstein, a beneficiary of the program. It was clear that the guests were extremely moved by the students’ thoughtfulness and care, and in turn, the students were able to see, first-hand, the immense impact their projects had on members of our greater community.

ALUMNI NOTES 1760s

Alex Frazier 1760 was featured in a June 6, 2018 article in The Philadelphia Inquirer about animal sanctuaries. Alex and his wife, retired Middle School art teacher Sandy Frazier, own and operate Little Lost Creek Alpaca Farm in Salford, PA where they take care of 13 alpacas, two goats, and two sheep.

1940s

Barbara Keely, wife of Edmund Keely ’42, wrote in to say that “Edmund is still going strong at the tender age of 94. He is very active in local affairs where we live in San Antonio.”

1950s

After close to 50 years of various adventures, five children and a glorious wife, Kirk White ’57 decided to create an online serial autobiography entitled Don’t Wash Mine, a title which comes from a tale told by the late William Jellett ’57.

Thirty-two chapters are already out there and White said he hasn’t run out of gas yet!

Andrew Mensing ’60 wrote: “As a member of the Class of 1960, I can confidently report that my life turned out splendidly. In addition to fathering four very high performing children (they have more degrees than a thermometer), my writer/creative director career on Madison Avenue was marked by record-breaking, award-winning work at Young & Rubicam, Benton & Bowles, and Daniel & Charles.

Then, moving north, I was President and Creative Director at three thriving Boston ad agencies as well as a visiting lecturer at numerous colleges and universities. Now retired, I dote on my four amazing grandchildren: Grayson, Riley, Cedric and baby Geneva. Not to mention traveling and enjoying the company of friends - a number of aging GA boys and Marine Corps buddies foremost among them. My years at GA, under-achieving as they were, equipped me to prevail in my work and in my life. Thank you Margaret Ward, Helen Booth, Olive Myers, Norma Shearer, Janet Wilkie, Dorothy Page, Reds Jordan, Ed Lawless, Jack Corey, Tom Beal, Emile Jalbert, Peter Biggs, George Bellis, Irv Cherashore and many more.”

Eric Wimmers ’61 and Fred Stuart ’61 attended the Old Guard ceremony on April 27, 2018 to welcome the members of the Class of 1968 to their 50-year graduation anniversary.

Dave Morrison ’69 recently attended the Springside-Chestnut Hill ’68 50th reunion, a prelude to that of GA ’69. Morrison was one of several classmates who transferred from CHA to GA, including Ken Desmond, Collin McNeil, Bob McNeil, and Ed Lawless ’69. Morrison also recently attended his 45th reunion at Lehigh University, hoping he might see Rob Johnston ’69 or Jeff Brindle ’69.

1970s

Patricia Kuhn ’70 retired from teaching special education (multiple disabilities) three years ago and is happily involved in gardening and beautifying her townhouse.

She also found her second part-time career in working for the Clothes Mentor franchise. Kuhn writes, “I helped open the Montgomeryville store and then helped open the Ardmore store. I love working with woman’s resale clothing and accessories, and it’s so much fun to find treasures from Gap to Gucci! I also have had time to work on family research, which has led me to finding cousins I did not know I had in Sweden, one in Abington where I originally grew up, and back to 1066 in England, Scotland, and Ireland.”

It’s Not About the Money, the seventh book written by Chuck Denison ’71, came out in June 2018.

Dr. Alicia Henderson Helps Care for the Youngest Patients a pre-med event, not for pre-med students but instead high school kids interested in pre-med. The students were very confident and comfortable and knew what they wanted to know.”

Henderson wasn’t so confident about her own path. She was a well-rounded student and interested in several subjects, including history and the sciences. She knew she wanted to work with kids, and for her Senior Project she shadowed a pediatrician in a clinic at Jefferson University Hospital, where her mom is a PhD neuroscientist and teacher. With that pediatrician, Alicia saw patients and found the experience to be a great opportunity to try something that might be of interest.

“It definitely helped shape my direction later,” said Henderson.

After GA, she focused on her interest in a variety of subjects and majored in political science at Cornell University. Afterwards, she briefly considered law school but decided instead on medicine and completed all pre-meds before heading to Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania.

As of summer 2018, Alicia has completed all of her medical training and is an attending physician on staff at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is a doctor of both pediatrics and anesthesia, but will just focus on being the latter with a pediatric background. She looks forward to teaching at Penn Med as part of her position.

Henderson has certainly paid her med school “dues” to get here - 11 years total!

With a strong science program at GA, it’s no wonder a growing number of young GA alumni are choosing to go into medical careers. In addition to stellar faculty and numerous science fair opportunities, students also have a place to get hands-on experience and access to alumni and parent experts in a variety of medical fields with ClubMed, the Upper School student-run club for students who are

interested in learning more about careers in medicine. It was through the group’s annual panel discussion that Dr. Alicia Henderson ’02 returned to campus.

“I was so impressed with the students’ questions – things that wouldn’t have been on my mind when I was at GA,” Dr. Henderson reflected. “When I went back to work, I told people that I participated in

Jack Guinan ’80, award-winning children’s book author & illustrator recently released, The Frog in the Bog, the fifth book in his series of rhyming books with positive life lessons for kids at Amazon.

Rebecca Garrett Brown ’82 and her husband, Arthur, celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary, and their son, Alex, just finished his junior year of high school.

Brown is currently the President of the California Nurse Midwives Association and is working on legislation that will grant full practice authority for certified nurse midwives in California.

Annamarie Geppert Hellebusch ’84 and Claire Ragusa MacRae ’84, along with daughters Morgan Hellebusch ’23, Grace Hellebusch ’28, and Kiera MacRae ’26, took a Disney Cruise over spring break and proudly represented GA on their stateroom door.

Kyle Rankin ’84 was featured in an April 27, 2018 Philadelphia Inquirer article.

Rankin is the head coach of the Abington Friends School’s boys and girls track and field teams. The team has doubled in size and found success since he took over in 2016. Rankin competed collegiately at the University of Tennessee and was a member of the team that won the 1991 NCAA outdoor championship. Before taking over at AFS, Rankin was an assistant coach at Eastern University in Radnor.

Joanne Finkelstein Schell ’91 had a busy spring. Her twin sons, Jake ’18 and Ben ’18, graduated from GA on June 8, 2018. McVeigh CSO Day

The GA Community was forever changed by the influence of Peter McVeigh 1760, who wove into every element of his teaching the importance of community service and supporting those less fortunate than ourselves.

To continue Peter’s legacy, multiple service initiatives took place in New York City and around Philadelphia in April 2018, which were supported by members of the entire GA community: alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and students.

With the recent establishment of the McVeigh Endowment, an expanded effort, now officially named The Peter C. McVeigh 1760 Day of Service, will take place on April 13, 2019. Along with events held on campus, which will be coordinated by the Upper School Community Service Group, the McVeigh Day of Service will involve the entire GA community to include events held by and for alumni across the country.

Additionally, under the leadership of Meghan McVeigh Maciolek ’97, a newly established alumni leadership group, The GA Alumni Community Service Council, is being formed. Carrying forward Peter’s legacy, the group’s mission is to take a holistic view of service and will initially focus on: • Organizing community service events for GA both in the Philadelphia area and across the country, • Supporting and mentoring Upper School students and young alumni in making community service-oriented connections for Senior Projects, internships or community service activities at their college campuses, • Supporting CSO coordinators in GA’s divisions with their respective service projects and initiatives.

Catching Up With Tai-ming Chang ’78

Some people daydream about sunbathing on a tropical beach while others fantasize about exploring new cities. Then there is GA alum Tai-ming Chang ’78. His thoughts often transport him to a cool stream in the middle of the woods where he can fly fish in peace.

“If I could, I would be fly fishing all the time,” said Chang with his signature smile, whose biggest haul was a 24-inch brown trout from the Yellowstone River.

“I’d rather be out fly fishing. I have loved to fish since I was a kid and it stayed with me and I have passed it on to my son, Nathan. Being out on the water, that is my Zen—not necessarily catching a fish, but just being out in the middle of the stream. I am present in the moment.”

Every fisherman has a preference, and for Chang, he enjoys catching brook trout, the official state fish of Pennsylvania that, excluding lake trout in Lake Erie, is the only trout species that is native to the Keystone State.

“Brook trout are found in good cold water, in healthier natural producing streams,” explained Chang, who loves fishing in Montana and Wyoming and notes that Yellowstone National Park should be on the bucket list for any avid fisherman. “As opposed to brown or rainbow trout, which are more hatchery raised.You know the water has to be healthy to be able to support brook trout. It has to be pretty cool, clean, and pure water.”

Chang, who has caught brookies bigger than 12 inches, would know. He spent 30 years protecting the streams and rivers he loves to fish in while working for the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He also spent three years as a liaison with United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

Over the years, Chang has done a little bit of everything, but always with collaboration and communication at the heart of his efforts. He worked with Native American tribes in California, industries in Texas (oil and gas, manufacturing, energy production, chemicals), and nongovernment organizations on the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative and land conservation in the Appalachian region.

Chang grew up learning to appreciate nature with his dad and local Boy Scout troop, and by the time he graduated GA he knew he wanted to pursue a career that included his passion for the outdoors.

“I wanted to find an outdoor career,” said Chang, who earned an A.B. in Biology and

Environmental Studies from Oberlin College in 1982. “I ended up at a desk job, but it was still protecting something I loved. That started early on. Fly fishing developed in my twenties and stayed with me ever since. Themes of our vacations include hiking, mountains, and cold water streams.”

Chang later went on to earn a Masters of Public Administration from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government where he had the opportunity to focus on negotiation and mediation skills. He also participated in a number of leadership training sessions by the EPA, which has greatly impacted his work with the government and now his time supporting local non-profit organizations.

“One of the things that was good for me being with EPA and federal government for 30 years is that I developed a whole set of skills that are so helpful to other

While there are still a number of serious environmental challenges facing the world these days, Chang does feel encouraged.

“Family-wise,” added Chang. “I am much prouder of the accomplishments of having three great sons (Andrew, Spencer, and Nathan ’24) and having the opportunity to be a father and share my passions for the outdoors.”

As a GA graduate, Chang remembers the deep friendships he developed in Fort Washington.

“Some of those are even longer lasting than my college friendships,” said Chang. “I look forward to my son finding that same type of camaraderie here.”

Effective April 12, 2018, Rebecca Jennings ’96 was confirmed by the United States Senate to become the next United States District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky. She was sworn in as the next (and first female exclusive to the Western District) Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky on April 16.

Madeleine Crippen Plankey ’98 and her brother, Fran Crippen ’02 (dec.), were recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame.

Both are members of the GA Athletic Hall of Fame.

In early June, Nina Markey ’98 co-chaired “Hope’s Night Out 2018,” an annual fundraising auction and gala that supports Career Wardrobe, a nonprofit social enterprise that uses clothing and professional development to empower unemployed individuals to work. Nina is also a board member for the organization. Natalie Markey ’99 also offered her support for the event, which was held at Moore College of Art & Design and raised more than $25,000. Nina is seen here with Andrea Blassingame, a former client and now Board member of Career Wardrobe, who shared her inspirational story with the attendees.

Anne Nelson ’98 was recently promoted to Executive Director of Supply Chain at Steward Healthcare.

Steward is the largest for-profit hospital system in the United States with 38

community hospitals across the country as well as a full delivery care network. She has been at Steward since 2015 and would love to hear from any alumni interested in healthcare supply chain.

Tyler Fenwick ’99 served as an assistant coach for Team USA’s open water team at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo in August. Fenwick is currently an associate head coach at the University of Virginia, and has been working with distance swimmers at the college level for a number of years.

2000s

Michael and Kristen Lueckel Buckler ’00 vacationed in Sedona, AZ in April 2018. They hiked various Red Rocks trails and also made a visit to the Grand Canyon. “The sights were unbelievable,” wrote Kristen. “We hope to visit again!”

Seth Gershenson ’00 was promoted to Associate Professor of Public Policy, with tenure, at American University in Washington, DC. In spring of 2018 he spent his sabbatical as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University’s Center for Education Policy Analysis.

Kathryn Kleppinger ’00 earned tenure at The George Washington University and was promoted to Associate Professor of Francophone Studies and International Affairs. She and her husband also welcomed their first child, Franklin Yongyue Chen, in December 2017.

Kassandra Lefakinis ’00 is co-host of a travel show called ‘This Is Greece with Michael Scott,’ which aired in Australia on SBS and in Greece. Lefakinis and her husband, Achilles Kyrtsis, also welcomed a baby girl, Daphne Anassa, into the world on June 11, 2018 in Athens. All are happy. Lefakinis also hosted classmates Leason Wetherill ’00 and Kate Staff ’00.

In February 2018, former NBA player Matt Walsh ’02 and his business partners became the majority stakeholders of the New Zealand Breakers. The Breakers are a professional basketball team that competes in the National Basketball League, Australia’s top league.

Jessica Chadwin Hoepfl ’03 and her husband, Robert, welcomed Grayson Chadwin Hoepfl to their family on March 31, 2018. Born in Portland, OR, Grayson weighed in at six pounds, three ounces and was 19 inches long.

Grayson is also the first grandson for Sherrea 1760 and Steve Chadwin, and the first nephew for Jamie Chadwin ’97.

Brian Grimes ’05 is making headlines these days for his positive impact on the city of Philadelphia through his start-up company, Bloyd Street Capital. Grimes cofounded Bloyd Street Capital in 2015. The mission of the boutique real estate investment firm is to build and manage portfolios of residential housing by rehabbing distressed properties in areas where demand for affordable housing greatly exceeds the current market supply. For his good work, Grimes (above left) and his partner were featured on March 27 on PhillyMag.com.

Following his time at GA, Grimes went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in economics at Columbia University. He worked in the financial and insurance industry in New York City before returning to the area.

Marisa Maglaty ’05 graduated from The Ohio State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. She

recently became engaged to Eric Weber of Perrysberg, OH and the couple is planning an October 2019 wedding. They also moved to California where Maglaty recently began a residency in Anatomic Pathology at University of California, Davis.

Mark Shimrock ’05 and Kiera Murasko-Blank, a Penn Charter Class of 2007 graduate, were married on November 18, 2017 at St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church in East Falls. For their honeymoon, the happy couple, who now live in Dresher, spent five days golfing and exploring in Bermuda, and six February days skiing and spa-ing at Banff. Their love story was captured in an April 1, 2018 article in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Shimrock currently serves as the Vice President at Silicon Valley Bank inWest Conshohocken.

Alexandra Beautyman ’07 spent several months with her partner, Victor Mutai, in Chemaetany, his hometown in western Kenya where the two of them built infrastructure for, and with, his family, including water collection systems, a solar power installation, a network of fences, and five other projects.

They also got engaged while overseas!

Ashley Begley ’07, who returned to campus to speak with Upper School students in April, successfully launched Ashley D Studio, a design studio that embraces “the delicate blend between spirited watercolor and strong typographic foundations.”

Begley spent a number of years working at Lilly Pulitzer before opening up her own shop. She studied at Rhode Island School of

Design where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts concentrating in graphic design and textiles.

In April 2018, Kyle Griffin ’07 was named an assistant men’s basketball coach at La Salle University. Griffin most recently served as an assistant coach at Robert Morris University. Prior to that he held an assistant coaching position at Lehigh University from 2013-16. He played college ball at La Salle and Siena College before he began coaching.

GA Diving Coach Thomas Henninger ’07 led the STAR Diving Camp at the Bermuda National Training Centre in July where he worked with Bermuda Olympian Katura Horton-Perinchief (Athens 2004). Henninger serves as the GA diving coach, and recently took a position as the administrative assistant for GAAC.

After receiving a promotion to manager in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Industries Advisory practice in spring of 2018, Lisebeth Forbes ’09 will be going on educational leave with PwC in August to enroll at Columbia Business School as a full-time MBA candidate in their class of 2020.

Forbes was selected as a PwC Advisory Scholar and will receive a full tuition scholarship from PwC for her Columbia MBA. Forbes had graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell University in 2013 with a BA (double major in Biological Sciences and Classics).

Patrick Hayes ’09 married Guillermina Kyburg in April 2017. Hayes is a chemical engineer and Guille is an attorney. They reside in Houston.

Who.What.Wear is a solo cabaret featuring Adrienne Visnic ’10 which made its West Coast debut at the prestigious Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles in June 3, 2018.

Coping Skills, the two-person band that features Lauren DeLucca ’11 and Rachel Dispenza, released a new album entitled Worst New Music on April 13, 2018, one day after headlining a show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. The duo were featured in an April edition of The Unionville Times. In 2015, DeLucca graduated from the Univeristy of the Arts with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology. She is currently a recording engineer at Milkboy the Studio.

Hannah Hayes ’11 is engaged to Joshua Hamsher.

Hayes is a senior analyst at Comcast and Hamsher is a medical student at Temple University.

Both are graduates of the University of Richmond. A September 1, 2018 wedding is being planned.

Nicholaas Honig ’11 graduated from the Boston University School of Law in spring 2018.

Ian Ochs ’11 graduated from Harvard University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He is currently entering his fourth year of graduate studies at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, working on alternative energy sources, and he has another two to three years to go until he receives his doctorate degree. Ochs also just became engaged to Ariel Mitnick. No date is set yet, but both families are looking forward with great enthusiasm to the wedding.

Erin Fenerty ’12, pictured here with father Jim Fenerty 1760, celebrated her graduation Magna Cum Laude from Jefferson University’s Accelerated Nursing program in May with a B.S.N. Erin also graduated in 2016 from Dickinson College with a B.A. in psychology.

Danika Gottbrecht ’13, who graduated from Guilford College in the spring of 2018, received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to Germany from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Gottbrecht will support the teaching of English in Rheinland-Pfalz, a German state bordering France, Belgium, and Luxembourg from September 2018 through June 2019. Gottbrecht is the first Fulbright grant recipient to come out of Guilford’s Honors Program. The GA graduate also had the opportunity to work and learn abroad in the spring of 2017 as well when she completed the Strasbourg Field Study and Internship Program through the Institute for Field Education. During her five-month stay, Gottbrecht attended French courses during an intensive six-week academic period, followed by a full-time internship and research project. For her efforts, she was the recipient of the prestigious Teaching Assistant Program in France award.

Caroline Haynie ’13 married Thomas Buckley on April 14, 2018 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in North Wales.

Max Detweiler ’14 graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami in spring of 2018. For his hard work, he was selected for Phi Beta Kappa, America’s most prestigious honor society, and Order of Omega, a leadership honor society for members of Fraternity & Sorority organizations. Detweiler was also the recipient of the Dean’s Service Award.

Leah Friedman ’14 won the DAAD RISE (German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Research Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE)) Program fellowship and spent much of the summer, “researching the neural correlates of healthy and pathological decision making in the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Group at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany,” according to the announcement. Friedman also participated in the International Neuroergonomics Conference in June where she presented her work summarized in an abstract submitted.

Neema Mehrgan ’14 was named to the spring 2018 Dean’s List at Muhlenberg College.

Megan McCloskey ’14 graduated from Penn State University in May 2018. During her time at PSU, McCloskey was the captain of the Nittany Lions’ track and field team as well as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Board.

McCloskey finished her career as an AllAmerican in the high jump, placing fourth at NCAA Outdoor National Championships in Eugene, OR. This fourth place finish was the highest finish at a National Championship for any high jumper in PSU history. McCloskey will continue her work as an advocate for student-athlete welfare.

Nick Popolizio ’14 was named Most Improved Player for Washington College baseball. He was also named All-Centennial Conference Second Team. Popolizio

pitched in half of the Shoremen’s 40 games this season, leading the Centennial with 20 appearances. His ERA of 3.23 was best on the team and his six saves this year rank him second in the conference. Opposing batters hit just .205 this season against Popolizio.

Evelyn Rakowsky ’14 graduated from Boston College in May 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hispanic Studies as well as concentrations in Biology and Medical Humanities.

Rakowsky also completed an internship in July 2018 with the Speech-Language Pathology team in the Rehabilitation Department at Tisch Hospital in New York City. She is now spending the year serving individuals with disabilities at Laradon’s Adult Day Program in Denver as a member of Colorado Vincentian Volunteers. After, she aspires to pursue a Master’s degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology. Rakowsky, who ran in her first Boston Marathon this past spring, was also featured in an April 14, 2018 article in The Heights where she talked of her running journey and passion for community service. Rakowsky used the opportunity to raise money for Back On My Feet, a national group that helps homeless people find resources for employment and housing if they agree to run with the group three times per week for a month.

In February, Olivia Reiner ’14 traveled to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea as a freelance journalist. While she was there, Reiner covered several Olympians for The Philadelphia Inquirer and AM NewYork. She also made daily appearances on KYW Newsradio 1060 to discuss eastern Pennsylvania athletes. Now, Reiner is in the final two months of her master’s program in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. For the rest of her time there, she is interning with the NHL’s New York Islanders in their video department.

Tyler Thurlow ’14 graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Science

degree in nursing and a minor in history.

Thurlow also added Registered Nurse to his credentials by passing his licensing boards in June 2018.

Thurlow will begin his nursing career in September in the University of Maryland Medical Center’s new graduate nurse residency program where he is specializing in the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Thurlow also completed his third Boston Marathon this past April.

Lauren Syphers ’14 graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science in Television-Radio.

Riley Yankowich ’14 graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in new media design.Yankowich also made the Dean’s List for the spring semester.

Johnny Aiello ’15, who just completed his junior year at Wake Forest University, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 14th round with the No. 416 overall choice in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. Aiello started 174 games since arriving in WinstonSalem. He had a .266 career average with 35 homers and 113 RBIs in his three seasons. Aiello joined the Bluefield Blue Jays (Class A advanced) in the Appalachian League this past summer.

Caroline Asplundh ’15 was named to the Miami University spring 2018 President’s List. Asplundh is majoring in Media and Culture, Interactive Media Studies.

Joshua Herman ’15 was named to the spring 2018 Dean’s List at Muhlenberg College.

Matthew Rueter ’15 spent the academic year of 2017-18 at Mansfield College, University of Oxford in Oxford, England where he studied finance, banking and politics. Rueter was a member of the University of Oxford’s varsity soccer team, and played in the important match against GERMANTOWN ACADEMY 35

Cambridge University on March 4, 2018, a match that the Colts won. Rueter will return to the States to finish his senior year at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts with his twin brother, James Rueter ’15.

Greg Callahan ’16, Katie Scarlett Loughlin ’14, and McKensie Meyer ’16 competed in the Cape May County Lifeguard Championships where they represented Cape May Beach Patrol, North Wildwood Beach Patrol and Avalon Beach Patrol, respectively.

Amherst College men’s lacrosse midfielder Jimmy McAfee ’16 was named All-New England Small College Athletic Conference First Team.

William Brittingham ’16, Brian Jamison ’16, and Kwasi Ampomah ’16 were each named to the spring 2018 Dean’s List at Muhlenberg College.

A walk-on member of the squash team at the University of Pennsylvania, Julia Buchholz ’17 started her career by winning her first seven matches, which featured victories over Stanford and Yale. At the No. 6 slot, she finished her season with 12 wins (5-2 Ivy League).

Nick Moeller ’17 received an Advanced Study Grant from Boston College to attend a summer-long Arabic immersion program at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco.

To stay intellectually engaged and connected with each other, retired teachers and administrators Emily Wagner 1760 and Sherrea Chadwin 1760 started a book discussion group.

Enthusiastic GA retirees and a few current faculty/staff members have been meeting monthly to discuss the group’s pick.

They began with Mark Sullivan’s Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and will resume their discussions this school year with The Rent Collector, by Camron Wright on September 18. Interested faculty, retired or current, should contact Emily (voila5@ comcast.net) to be added to the group list.

“You get to see the full spectrum of patients from the smallest to big people which requires more thought about customization.”

With this transition into the work world after all of her training, Henderson is thinking back to what got her to this point. In a recent conversation with a friend

and GA classmate, she commented, “I feel very indebted to GA, not just for everything they taught me but also instilling in me a good work ethic. My sister went to Duke and I went to Cornell and we both say that we worked harder at GA than at college!

School was very rigorous and taught us how to juggle it all – sports, homework…and GA definitely taught us how to study. I do feel like my foundation came from there.”

Calling out specific teachers is tough for the GA lifer because “there’s just so many, it’s hard to narrow it down! A few that really stick out in my mind are Mark Stephens in 6th grade – which was Lower School then, and all of the Latin teachers. I also played field hockey and lacrosse, so I’m grateful to Ms. [Brooke] Watson and Ms. [Ginny] Hofmann.”

GA is certainly grateful to Henderson, and all of the alumni and parent medical professionals who have returned to campus to talk with, and mentor, today’s students. Even in the medical field, building that network is vital.

Dr. Samuel Osbourn, Headmaster from 1915-48, led Germantown Academy during some of the roughest moments in United States history. It was during his tenure that the “alumni fund” (known now as the Annual Fund) and the overall school endowment were wisely started.

The Osbourn Society includes school community members who share Dr. Osbourn’s commitment to independent school values, and support his vision for the future of Germantown Academy by making gifts through bequests and other estate plans. GA’S PROUD WOMEN’S HISTORY Germantown Academy continued its recognition of the pioneering women who blazed the trail of co-education during an Alumni Reception last March at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill. Alumni from across the generations, including several multi-generational family members, came out to chat with former classmates, teachers and coaches, and to celebrate GA’s history, which was on display through archival pictures and artifacts.

Another effort thought to offer the girls more of a voice, was to allow the senior class to design their own uniform for the year.

Cipolloni affectionately recalled her uniform, a powder-blue jacket over a kilt with a powder blue and purple pattern. She also had fond memories of Ginny Day, who would pull girls into her office to measure skirt lengths, an exercise that all parties saw as futile.

At the conclusion of this celebratory year, the Class of 1968 was formally inducted into the “Old Guard” (classes 50 plus years past graduation) marking the first women inducted into this loyal and respected group of alumni/ae.

The feature article in the last Patriot Magazine, as well as the Philadelphia event, spurred memories and further sharing of experiences from alumnae who attended during those transitional years. Although the first class to graduate with women was in 1968, some younger girls began attending GA at the Germantown campus soon after the vote was cast to become a co-educational school. As Stacey Willits McConnell ’73 noted, “I began on the Germantown campus in the fall of 1959 at the age of 3. My twin brother, Merritt, and I were in the kindergarten class there.

We had a second year called "transition" and then moved to Fort Washington in our third year for first grade.” Upon her graduation, McConnell became the first female “lifer” in the history of the school!

Additional alumnae, Helen Piszek Nelson ’70 and Barbara Seeberger Cipolloni ’72, who began their GA journey in Germantown, shared with Upper School History teacher and GA Archivist, Dr. Mark Rabuck ’86, that the school made an honest effort to make girls feel welcome by establishing “feminine” traditions such as mother-daughter teas and maypole dances. However, those activities “faded away on a wave of modern times,” Nelson recalled, while her favorite annual traditions are the ones which endure to this day: Field Day,

Celebration of the Old Guard

The Class of 1968, GA’s first coed class of graduates, were celebrated with induction into the Old Guard (alumni who have graduated 50 plus years ago) this past May. Guests were treated to a special performance by the Middle & Upper School Chamber Ensemble followed by a recognition of Bob Aemisegger ’48 and Dick Hassold ’48 as the most senior alumni in attendance.

Completing the program was a wonderful speech given by Former Athletic Director and Former Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Jim Buckley 1760 reflecting on the GA of 50 years ago and today. As is tradition, the evening was closed by a rousing singing of the alma mater!

It is with much pride that Germantown Academy learned more about, remembered and celebrated the incorporation of girls into the life of the school.

Gratitude should be paid to the school’s leaders for embracing co-education at a time when other InterAc schools remained gender specific.

“It was one of the most aggressive decisions by the Board (and the right decision) at the time and really set the stage for our future growth and development,” recalled John Binswanger ’50, Trustee Emeritus.

Most importantly, we salute all of the girls in those early years who forged new paths, raised the bar, and added their stories to the vibrant fabric of our school’s history to ultimately help shape Germantown Academy into the exceptional school it is today.

STUDENT-RUN ALUMNI SURVEY GLEANS VALUABLE INFORMATION

Throughout the 2017-18 school year, members of the Statistics Honors class, conceived and taught by Ruth Carver, partnered with the Alumni Society Board and the Office of Institutional Advancement to create, distribute, and analyze an Alumni Survey. The goal of the project was to provide an authentic learning experience for the students, who were involved in every aspect of the project, highlighted by a final presentation of the results analyzing alumni engagement and support of GA. More than 550 alumni participated, providing extremely valuable and impactful feedback regarding philanthropic trends at our school.
