Madrid ofrece a sus visitantes muchos y buenos sitios donde tapear. Pero todavía no contaba con un street food market entre su oferta. El Mercado de San Ildefonso, entre Malasaña y Chueca, es el primero. 18 puestos monotemáticos de comida para llevar especializados en productos gourmet ocupan ahora el que fue el primer mercado de abastos de la capital.

Visitors to Madrid are spoilt for choice when it comes to tapas. However, until recently, street food was simply not on the menu. The San Ildefonso Market, located between Malasaña and Chueca on the site of the capital’s earliest grocery market, is the first of its kind, with 18 single-theme takeaway food stalls specialising in gourmet products.

Ahora, el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad quiere darle una nueva utilidad al enorme edificio carcelario y convertirlo en un centro cultural y de arte. Artistas de todas las disciplinas podrán disponer así de un nuevo espacio donde desarrollar su creatividad.

The city council of Malaga has decided to give a new lease of life to the old provincial prison located in the district of Cruz del Humilladero. The enormous building is set to be converted into an arts and culture centre where artists from all disciplines will be able to enjoy a new workspace.

Das ehemalige Provinzgefängnis Málagas befindet sich im Viertel Cruz del Humilladero. Nun möchte die Stadtverwaltung dem enormen Gefängnisgebäude einen neuen Sinn geben und es zu einem Kunst- und Kulturzentrum umgestalten. La lucha contra la deforestación tiene un aliado más en México. Cronology es una empresa mexicana que convierte las botellas de plástico (PET) en papel, al que han llamado Petapel. Según uno de sus fundadores, esta técnica es un 15% más barata que otras empleadas en la fabricación de papel. «La finalidad es reducir la tala y el desperdicio de agua y, como empresa, poder inspirar una conciencia ecológica por medio de nuestros productos», explican desde Cronology.

In Mexico, the fight against deforestation has a new ally. The Mexican company Cronology turns PET plastic bottles into a type of paper called Petapel.

According to the company’s founders, the technique is 15% cheaper than other paper manufacturing processes and helps “reduce logging, conserve water, and, as a business, inspire ecological consciousness through our products.”

The old Cinecittà studios in Rome, where legendary films such as Ben Hur and Quo Vadis were made, has been converted into a new theme park called Cinecittá World. The park has been designed by Dante Ferreti, winner of three Oscars for his work as artistic director in Sweeny Todd, The Aviator and Hugo.

Getting around the streets of London by bike can be a daunting and occasionally dangerous task. After a number of fatal accidents, the Mayor of London resolved to build two cycle lanes that will allow cyclists to travel around the city safely. The first two lanes will run from the city centre to Greenwich and Hackney and there are plans to expand the network with the addition of 24 more cycle lanes in 2016.

Desplazarse en bici por las calles de Londres puede resultar complicado y, a veces, peligroso. Ante varios accidentes mortales ocurridos, el Ayuntamiento londinense ha decidido construir dos vías tranquilas para que los ciclistas se desplacen con seguridad por la ciudad. Las dos primeras irán desde el centro hasta Greenwich y Hackney. Se estima que en 2016 la red se ampliará con 24 más.

i tuvieras que completar la serie de palabras Arquitectura y Barcelona, no hay duda de que lo primero que se te vendrá a la cabeza será Modernista. Este estilo de finales del xix y principios del xx, de carácter orgánico e inspirado en las formas naturales, es lo más conocido de la ciudad Condal y su arquitecto estrella, Antoni Gaudí.

Pero ¿sabes qué? En la arquitectura local hay vida fuera del Art Nouveau.

Si se quiere viajar al pasado lo mejor es irse al Barrio Gótico.

Epicentro de esa antigua ciudad romana conocida como Barcino, aún pueden encontrarse restos de la muralla que protegía a la población hasta finales de la Edad Media. Entre lo más destacado de esta arquitectura de la ciudad está la catedral del siglo xiii, en la plaza de la Seu, con su claustro de cuatro galerías góticas rodeando un esplendoroso jardín donde pueden encontrarse ocas. Y la del Rei, que alberga el Saló del Tinell, una sala de columnas macizas donde dicen que Isabel y Fernando recibieron a Cristóbal Colón a su regreso de América.

Life beyond modernism

Asked to think of a word that goes with architecture and Barcelona, the first thing to come to most people’s minds would be Modernism. However, there’s more to the city’s architecture than Art Nouveau.

For those looking to travel back in time, the best place to go is the Gothic Quarter. There visitors can still find traces of the wall that protected the population of this ancient Roman city, once known as Barcino, until the end of the Middle Ages. Highlights include the 13th century cathedral in the Pla de la Seu, with its cloister of four Gothic galleries surrounded by a magnificent garden with its own geese, and the Plaça del Rei, which is home to the Saló del Tinell, a hall whose large stone pillars are said to have formed the backdrop to Isabella and Ferdinand’s reception of Christopher Columbus on his return from America.

Mehr als nur Jugendstil

Müssten Sie die Wortreihe Architektur und Barcelona logisch ergänzen, käme Ihnen sicherlich als Erstes das Wort Jugendstil in den Sinn. Aber wissen Sie was? In der Architektur Barcelonas gibt es mehr als Art Nouveau.

Für eine Reise in die Vergangenheit begibt man sich am besten in den Barrio Gótico, das gotische Viertel. Es war einmal das Zentrum der ehemals römischen Stadt namens Barcino. Hier sollen die Katholischen Könige Isabel und Fernando Christoph Kolumbus nach seiner Rückkehr aus Amerika empfangen haben.

Avanzando por esa línea temporal, no hay nada mejor que visitar edificios de un estilo poco reconocido en Barcelona: el racionalismo. Sus postulados están basados en la funcionalidad, utilidad, simetría y plasticidad como patrones estéticos y que rechazaban el ornamento vano de flores, plantas y demás que adornaban las construcciones modernistas. Edificios como las casas Masana, de Ramón Reventós y construidas en 1930 cerca de la Plaça Espanya; o la casa Vehils Vidal, de Domingo Verdaguer y erigidas en 1936, cerca de la avenida Portal de l’Àngel, son solo algunos de los ejemplos que se pueden encontrar pateando la ciudad.

Más contemporáneos son el MACBA, en pleno Raval y construido por Richard Meier; la torre Agbar, de Jean Nouvel; la Torre de Collserola, de Norman Foster o el Auditori de Rafael Moneo, además de barrios enteros como la Vila Olímpica, en el antiguo barrio industrial del Poblenou, delante del mar. Con todo esto no resulta raro que Barcelona sea la sede de la Fundación Mies van der Rohe, único gran premio europeo de arquitectura y que demuestra que hay vida después del modernismo.

Travelling forward in time, those with an interest in architecture should not miss buildings designed in a style for which Barcelona is less famous: Rationalism. Rationalist architecture values functionality, usefulness, symmetry and adaptability as aesthetic criteria, eschewing vain ornamentation. Buildings such as Ramón Reventós’ Casas Masana (1930), near the Plaça Espanya, or Domingo Verdaguer’s Casa Vehils Vidal (1936), just off Avenida del Portal de l’Àngel, are excellent examples.

More contemporary architecture can be found at Richard Meier’s Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) in the Raval district, Jean Nouvel’s Torre Agbar, Norman Foster’s Torre de Collserola and Rafael Moneo’s Auditori, as well as districts such as the Vila Olímpica in the old industrial area of Poblenou. With such a wealth of architecture, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is home to the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the only major European architecture award.

There can be no doubt there is life beyond Modernism.

The old travelling spirit is alive and well at the H10 Montcada

Who has never dreamed about being one of those intrepid explorers who travelled the world during the times of our grandparents? That same spirit of adventure can be breathed at the H10 Montcada after its refurbishment.

Located on the Via Laietana, this boutique hotel has a new interior design. One of its most outstanding features, along with the inspiration of the voyages of yesteryear, is the white colour of its bedrooms and restaurant.

Globes and maps can be found alongside Chesterfield sofas and armchairs that are an invitation to dream of long voyages. The restaurant now offers different spaces, with an area decorated as a library, a new buffet and white walls that create a bright, restful atmosphere.

That same colour also features strongly in the 79 bedrooms, with their restrained, elegant look. White wood mouldings with leather headboards and armchairs. Metallic lamps give a final, innovative touch.

Doctor Livingston and his colleagues would never have found a better place to rest after their legendary voyages.

Das Restaurant bietet nun verschiedene Räume mit einem als Bibliothek gestalteten Bereich, einem neuen Buffet und weißen Wänden, die eine helle und ruhige Atmosphäre schaffen.

Dieselbe Farbe dominiert auch in den 79 Zimmern und vermittelt Schlichtheit und Eleganz. Zierleisten aus weißem Holz harmonieren dort mit ledernen Kopfteilen an den Betten und ledernen Sesseln. Metallene Lampen ergänzen das Design und sorgen für einen eleganten und neuartigen Touch.

Doktor Livingstone und seine Kollegen könnten keinen besseren Platz finden, um sich von ihren legendären Reisen zu erholen.

uelen ser a las cosas más cotidianas a las que menos nos paramos a observar detenidamente.

Y si no, pregunten a algún madrileño que viva cerca de la Puerta de Alcalá si alguna vez se ha fijado que el monumento tiene dos caras completamente diferentes. Y eso que Ana Belén y Víctor Manuel nos han insistido durante años en que miráramos bien.

El rey Felipe III fue quien ideó este símbolo de Madrid, cuando a mediados del siglo XVI decidió conmemorar con su construcción la llegada de su esposa, Margarita de Austria. El monumento contaba con un diseño muy sencillo, así que cuando el grandilocuente Carlos III llegó al poder, dos siglos después, decidió derribarla para poner en su lugar una versión mucho más vistosa.

El monarca estaba escandalizado con el estado de la capital, a la que calificó de auténtica pocilga, y se rodeó de varios colaboradores de confianza para cambiar la imagen pública del lugar, como el ministro Esquilache.

Bajo su mandato se construyeron la glorieta de Cibeles, la de Neptuno, el Hospital San Carlos -que hoy es el Museo Reina Sofía- y el Jardín Botánico. Por eso la historia bautizó a este rey como “el mejor alcalde de Madrid”, sin ser él nada de eso.

La puerta de entrada de la ciudad, hoy en pleno centro, le pareció modesta en exceso, así que encargó una nueva de mayores dimensiones y con muchos más ornamentos.

El arquitecto italiano Francesco Sabatini, otro de los íntimos aliados del rey, presentó dos propuestas distintas. Ante la imposibilidad de decidirse por una de ellas, Carlos III terminó por ordenar que cada una de ellas ocupara una cara de la Puerta de Alcalá tras la sugerencia del propio Sabatini.

El lado oeste está compuesto por dos columnas y aparecen en él ángeles y cabezas de leones como símbolo de prosperidad. La fachada este cuenta con diez columnas, acompañadas de cuatro niños que representan la justicia, la prudencia, la templanza y la fortaleza.

It’s not often we stop to take a closer look at the things we see every day. Just ask someone from Madrid whether they have noticed this monument has two completely different faces.

King Philip III came up with the idea for this iconic Madrid landmark during the second half of the 16th century to commemorate the arrival of his wife Margaret of Austria. The original design was simple and two centuries later, when Charles III (notorious for his love of pomp) ascended to the throne, he decided to demolish it and put something much more ostentatious in its place.

Horrified at the state of the capital, which he described as nothing short of a pigsty, the king formed a council of trusted individuals tasked with changing its public image, including the Marquis of Esquilache. His mandate saw the construction of the Cibeles and Neptuno roundabouts, Hospital San Carlos (now the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía) and the Botanic Gardens. All this led history to award him the title of “Madrid’s best mayor,” even though this may be far from the truth.

Finding the gateway to the city, which now stands in the centre, too modest for his tastes, he commissioned a new larger and more ornamental structure. Two different designs were submitted by the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini. Unable to choose between them, Charles III accepted Sabatini’s suggestion that both should be used, one for each side of the Alcalá Gate.

The west side has two columns with angels and lions’ heads to symbolise prosperity. The east side has 10 columns, accompanied by four children representing justice, prudence, temperance and strength.

Der Monarch war entsetzt über die Zustände in der Hauptstadt, die er als wahren Schweinestall bezeichnete.

So umgab er sich mit zahlreichen Mitarbeitern seines Vertrauens, wie dem Minister Esquilache, um das öffentliche Bild der Stadt zu wandeln.

In seiner Amtszeit wurden die Monumentalbrunnen Fuente de Cibeles und Fuente de Neptuno, das Krankenhaus Hospital San Carlos - das heute das Reina Sofía Museum beherbegt - und der Botanische Garten angelegt. Daher wurde dieser König in der Geschichtsschreibung zum "besten Bürgermeister Madrids", ohne dass er das auch nur im Geringsten gewesen wäre.

Das damalige Stadttor, das sich heute mitten im Stadtzentrum befindet, war ihm zu bescheiden und so gab er ein neues von größerem Ausmaß und mit wesentlich mehr Verzierungen in Auftrag. Der italienische Architekt Francesco Sabatini legte ihm zwei verschiedene Entwürfe vor. Da es ihm unmöglich war, sich für einen der beiden zu entscheiden, ordnete Karl III. schließlich an, dass jeder Entwurf auf einer Seite der Puerta de Alcalá umgesetzt werden solle, was ihm Sabatini selbst vorgeschlagen hatte.

Die Westseite hat zwei Säulen, auf ihr finden sich Engel und Löwenköpfe als Symbol für Wohlstand.

Die Ostfassade weist zehn Säulen auf, oben finden sich vier Kinder.

Diese symbolisieren Gerechtigkeit, Besonnenheit, Mäßigung und Stärke.

Ese podría ser el resumen que explique la profunda renovación que se ha hecho en el H10 Villa de la Reina de Madrid para convertirse en un Hotel Boutique.

Ubicado en el número 22 de la Gran Vía madrileña, por fuera, la majestuosa fachada de principios del siglo XX se mantiene igual. Pero su interior se ha renovado con un interiorismo que busca realzar la belleza del edificio y dar calidez a todas las áreas del hotel, combinando elementos clásicos con toques más modernos.

En esta línea, sus 74 habitaciones lucen ahora tonos más claros y juegan con materiales nobles, como un cabecero de cuero. Y el restaurante Las Infantas ofrece un diseño más actual, espacioso y luminoso que recuerda a una cocina particular.

Esa combinación de lo clásico y lo moderno se aprecia también en la zona del lobby y el bar situados en la planta baja, donde una nueva biblioteca, grandes sillones de terciopelo y lámparas de hierro forjado conviven en armonía con las columnas de piedra originales del edificio, una gran chimenea y la escalinata de piedra que conduce al antiguo ascensor de hierro y madera aún en uso.

Changing things so that everything stays the same. That is one way of looking at the in-depth refurbishment carried out on the H10 Villa de la Reina in Madrid, converting it into a boutique hotel.

Standing at number 22 on Gran Vía in Madrid, the majestic early 20th-century façade is the same as it always has been.

However, inside, the renovation has created an interior design that seeks to highlight the building’s most attractive features and give a warm feel to all areas of the hotel, combining classic elements with more modern touches.

The 74 rooms now offer lighter shades and rich materials, such as leather headboards. The restaurant, Las Infantas, offers a more up to date, bright and spacious design, reminiscent of the kitchen in a private home.

This combination of classic and contemporary can also be seen in the lobby and bar on the ground floor, where a new library, large velvet armchairs and wrought iron lamps are in harmony with the building’s original stone columns, a large fireplace and the stone staircase that leads to the antique iron and wood lift, still in use.

This has been a thorough refurbishment, in order to continue offering the best service.

uerteventura se narra en piedra. Los yacimientos de esta isla, durante siglos poblada por civilizaciones que fueron inconscientes de la existencia del resto del planeta, cuentan en capítulos de roca las etapas de su existencia.

Solo hace falta un vistazo a las incisiones para entender que la historia aquí es gráfica. La más nutrida de todo el archipiélago: el momento en que se produce el poblamiento de la isla, el periodo de desarrollo de la cultura aborigen, los años de la conquista y penetración europea, lo que pasó después de eso… Los científicos que estudian los enigmas de esta tierra flotante se valen de los diferentes grabados de distintas eras que se fueron descubriendo a lo largo y ancho del territorio.

Aunque los primeros fueron hallados a finales del siglo XIX, fue a partir de la década de los 80 cuando las líneas de investigación se dispararon gracias a la masiva aparición de pistas.

The story of Fuerteventura is told in stone. The island was populated for centuries by civilisations that were unaware of the existence of the rest of the planet, and their history is told in chapters of rock.

Just a look at the island’s engravings helps us to understand that history here is made in images, and it has one of the richest stores in the Canaries.

Every stage here has its incisions: the period when the island was being populated, the development of aboriginal culture, the years of European conquest and colonisation, and the recent past. Scientists who study the enigmas of this floating land pay close attention to the carvings from different periods that have been discovered all over Fuerteventura.

Although the first engravings were discovered in the late 19th century, it was only from the 1980s onwards that they have been systematically identified, catalogued and studied.

It was local residents who brought attention to the carved footprints of the Betancuria Natural Park in 2007.

These images are perhaps the most important found so far, along with

Unos vecinos de la zona dieron con los grabados podomorfos del Parque Natural de Betancuria en 2007, quizás los más importantes y decanos de todos junto a los de la cima de la montaña de Tindaya.

En forma de huellas y espirales los aborígenes de la isla, los mahos, dieron señales de que, antes del sol y las tumbonas, ellos fueron los primeros que estuvieron cincelando la historia allí.

So it has just acquired the Las Palmeras apartments in Fuerteventura, where it has two other establishments.

The Las Palmeras apartments are located 300 metres from the beach in Corralejo, a fishing village in the north of the island, near the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park. Its wonderful beaches of fine sand and its clear waters make the park a unique natural space and one of the many reasons why Fuerteventura was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The complex has 200 studios and 60 apartments with kitchen, balcony or terrace and full bathroom. It has a garden area and large-sized swimming pools, as well as a tennis court and a multi-sports area. There is also a buffet restaurant and four bars.

LA ROMA MECÁNICA Lalupa

os futuristas, esa vanguardia artística italiana, creían que la máquina era claramente superior al hombre. Pero ¿no hay manera de que la belleza de la machina y el homo se reconcilien?

En Roma, en la antigua Central Termoeléctrica Giovanni Montemartini, han encontrado la forma.

En este espacio, situado en la calle Ostiense y perteneciente a la red de Musei Capitolini, estatuas y frisos clásicos de dioses y hombres dialogan con las máquinas de la primera central eléctrica pública de Roma, inaugurada en 1912. Una superviviente, por lo tanto, de un siglo con, entre otras cosas, dos Guerras Mundiales y un boom inmobiliario.

La central cerró a finales de los años 60 y durante una década durmió la pesadilla de la decadencia. En los 80, alguien pensó que a lo mejor tenía algo que decir sobre la historia de Roma y fue despertada de su mal sueño, aunque todavía estaba lejos de alcanzar su actual esplendor.

Fue en 1997, simplemente por necesidad, cuando un gran grupo de obras clásicas llegó a sus salas.

Los trabajos de restauración de los Musei Capitolini, principalmente en el Palazzo dei Conservatori, en el Museo Nuovo y en el Braccio Nuovo, obligaron a trasladar parte de sus piezas. Y unas cuantas acabaron en la Central Termoeléctrica, donde se dispusieron entre las calderas, turbinas, motores y demás parafernalia propia de la producción de energía.

The Futurists—the avant-garde of Italian art—believed the machine was far superior to man. However, while many might be convinced of the impossibility of reconciling the beauty of man and the machine, the old Giovanni Montemartini power plant in Rome has found the answer.

The space, which is located on Ostiense Street and forms part of the Musei Capitolini network, houses a collection of classic statues and friezes depicting gods and men, juxtaposed alongside the machinery of Rome’s first public power plant, which opened in 1912.

When the plant closed at the end of the 1960s, it lay dormant and fell into decline for a decade.

However, it was not until 1997 that a large number of classical works came to be exhibited in its rooms out of necessity. Renovation work for the Musei Capitolini museums, which mainly affected the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the Museo Nuovo and the Braccio Nuovo, meant it was necessary to rehouse part of the collections. A number of pieces found their way to the power plant, where they were displayed among boilers, turbines, engines and other electricity generating paraphernalia.

In diesem zur Gruppe der Kapitolinischen Museen gehörenden Raum in der Via Ostiense stehen klassische Statuen und Friese von Göttern und Menschen im Dialog mit den Maschinen des ersten städtischen Kraftwerks von Rom, das 1912 eingeweiht wurde.

Das Kraftwerk wurde Ende der 60er Jahre geschlossen und war dann ein Jahrzehnt lang dem Verfall preisgegeben. 1997 hielten aus purer Raumnot eine große Anzahl klassischer Werke in seinen Räumen Einzug.

Die Restaurationsarbeiten in den Kapitolinischen Museen, vor allem im Konservatorenpalast, im Museo Nuovo und im Braccio Nuovo, machten es nötig, einen Teil der Werke auszulagern.

Und einige davon gelangten in das Kraftwerk, wo sie zwischen Kesseln, Turbinen, Motoren und weiterem Zubehör für die Stromproduktion ausgestellt wurden.

La muestra se tituló Máquinas y Dioses y en ella la mitología, representada por esculturas antiguas y valiosos hallazgos arqueológicos que iban desde la época republicana hasta finales del período imperial de Roma, se daba la mano con la mecánica de principios del siglo XX. El resultado fue tan interesante que, aunque había nacido como una idea de urgencia y para salir del paso, se decidió que la antigua central debía convertirse en un museo capitolino por derecho propio y ser la sede permanente de las adquisiciones más recientes de esta red de museos.

Un lugar donde la machina y el homo se dan la mano.

In the exhibition, entitled Machines and Gods, mythology –represented by ancient sculptures and significant archaeological discoveries dating from the Republican period all the way to the end of the Roman Empire– was exhibited side-by-side with machinery from the early 20th century.

The result was so fascinating that, even though the exhibition arose out of the urgent need to find a solution to the difficulties created by the renovation work, a decision was taken to convert the old power plant into a museum, and make it the permanent home of the most recent acquisitions of the Musei Capitolini network. A place where man and machine really do go hand in hand.

Die Ausstellung nannte sich Maschinen und Götter. Hier vereinigten sich Mythologie in Form von antiken Skulpturen und kostbaren archäologischen Fundstücken aus der Zeit von der römischen Republik bis zum Ende der Römischen Kaiserzeit mit der Mechanik des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts.

Obwohl dies aus einer Notlage heraus entstanden und nur als Übergangslösung gedacht war, war das Ergebnis so interessant, dass man beschloss, das ehemalige Kraftwerk zu einem Teil der Kapitolinischen Museen und zum ständigen Ausstellungsort der neuesten Ankäufe dieser Museumsgruppe zu machen. Ein Ort, an dem Mensch und Maschine sich die Hand reichen.

For those wanting to continue their calming experience after enjoying a circuit or treatments, the outdoor Privilege terrace has individual spaces with double sunloungers and an outdoor Jacuzzi.

The Despacio Spa Centre of the H10 Estepona Palace has also had most of its 1,000 square metres refurbished.

Soft light falls in the reception and treatments area, which now has an intimate décor that imparts a feeling of calm and well-being as soon as guests enter the facility.

The spa has a dynamic pool with bubble pools, waterfalls, Jacuzzi and aromatherapy showers, including other relaxation facilities. The range of treatments incorporates the latest aesthetic trends, including the Japanese facial lifting technique, Kobido, and vitamin-C anti-aging regeneratives.

Holistic massages -including exclusive methods such as sea snail, foulard and gem massage- now form part of the services, and a new relaxation area offers guests the chance to enjoy a selection of herbal teas.

olorista, aromática, fresca pero, sobre todo, variada, así es la cocina oriental. Porque no todo es pescado crudo y arroz. La diversidad predomina en las recetas que se preparan a lo largo y ancho del gigante asiático.

Aunque cada región del continente asiático tiene su propia identidad, existen elementos comunes que la identifican. En la preparación de los platos se emplean muchas especias que permiten puntualizar sabores, así como verduras y hortalizas que distinguen texturas y tonos, además de decenas de ingredientes autóctonos.

Tras esta cocina se esconde una tradición milenaria. Emplea ingredientes y técnicas culinarias que sorprenden por sus muchas posibilidades creativas, capaces de convencer, incluso, a los especialistas en nutrición, quienes están empezando a recomendar sus ingredientes en diferentes dietas.

H10 Hotels no es ajeno a las bondades de la cocina oriental.

En junio de 2012 surgió el primer restaurante Sakura, en el H10 Lanzarote Princess, con el anhelo de crear un espacio asiático dentro del hotel. Hoy cuenta con dos modalidades: Los restaurantes Sakura, ubicados en el ya mencionado hotel y en el H10 Rubicón Palace, ofrecen una carta basada en ensaladas, sopas, arroces, noodles, carnes y pescados. Y los restaurantes Sakura Teppanyaki, implementados en el H10 Costa Adeje Palace, el H10 Conquistador y el H10 Las Palmeras, están más influenciados por la cocina japonesa. Cuentan con una parrilla vista donde el cocinero muestra sus habilidades y dominio de las técnicas de la plancha delante de los comensales. Diversity is a major feature of the cuisine eaten the length and breadth of the Asian continent.

Although each region within Asia has its own identity, there are common elements. Spices are widely used to build a pattern of flavours, while vegetables provide texture and colour.

Variety comes through the dozens of local ingredients.

These cuisines are thousands of years old, and use foods and culinary techniques that offer countless creative possibilities. They are also winning over experts in nutrition, who are now starting to recommend ingredients typical of Eastern gastronomy.

H10 Hotels is well aware of the positives of Oriental cuisine. In June 2012 its first restaurant in this category, Sakura, opened at the H10 Lanzarote Princess, creating an Asian space within the hotel. Today there are two possibilities: The Sakura restaurants, located at the above-mentioned hotel and at the H10 Rubicón Palace, which offer a menu based on salads, soups, rice, noodles, meat and fish. The Sakura Teppanyaki restaurants, at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, the H10 Conquistador and the H10 Las Palmeras, are more influenced

by Japanese cuisine. They have an open grill where the chef can demonstrate his skills and his mastery of grilling techniques in front of diners. They offer a unique tasting menu with a selection of sushis, soups, fish, meat and desserts.

H10 Hotels sind die positiven Eigenschaften der asiatischen Küche bewusst. Im Juni 2012 eröffnete das erste Restaurant Sakura im H10 Lanzarote Princess mit dem Ziel, innerhalb des Hotels einen Raum mit asiatischem Flair zu schaffen.

os súbditos de su graciosa majestad siempre han sentido cierto complejo de inferioridad en lo que a gastronomía patria se refiere. La sombra de sus vecinos al otro lado del canal es alargada y ante este hecho poco, o muy poco, puede hacer el mejor de los sunday roast.

No obstante, los siglos de presencia británica en el suroeste asiático fomentaron la incorporación de platos remotos al recetario british.

Poco a poco, el paladar de los británicos se fue acostumbrando a la cocina especiada de la India, y hoy un buen puñado de esas recetas se han ganado su propio puesto de honor en el recetario de la Pérfida Albión, donde no falta el pollo tikkamasala.

De origen indio, su vínculo con la cultura gastronómica inglesa es ya tan sólido como el Eurotúnel. De hecho, su popularidad es tal que se cuenta que hasta Robin Cook, un exministro británico de Asuntos Exteriores, bautizó al tikkamassala como “el verdadero plato nacional de Gran Bretaña”.

En el H10 Lanzarote Princess de Playa Blanca, en Canarias, el 90 por ciento de sus huéspedes proviene de Inglaterra y, por tanto, la esencia asiática está muy presente en su carta. Carlos Pacho es el chef del restaurante a la carta del hotel, el Sakura, en donde a diario se apuesta por la fusión entre las gastronomías de Occidente y Asia. En su salón, el pollo tikkamasala tiene, cómo no, una aceptación máxima. “Si tengo que describir lo que me sugiere este plato, diría que es una combinación

When British food went spicy

Subjects of Her Majesty the Queen have always felt a certain inferiority complex when it comes to their native cookery. France has cast a long shadow when it comes to food, and the traditional Sunday roast cannot muster a full reply to all the glories of the country across the channel. However, centuries of British presence in South Asia has meant that the islands’ inhabitants have gradually become used to the spicy cuisine of India, and a number of recipes from the sub-continent have made their way into the hearts, and onto the plates, of the British.

One of the most important is Chicken Tikka Masala. Of Indian origin, its link to British cuisine is as solid as the Channel Tunnel. In fact, Tikka Masala is so popular that it was described by the former UK Foreign Minister, Robin Cook, as “a true British national dish.”

At the H10 Lanzarote Princess on Playa Blanca, in the Canary Islands, 90 percent of the guests come from the UK, and so there is a strong Asian presence on the menu. Carlos Pacho is the chef of the hotel restaurant, the Sakura, which serves a fusion of European and Asian cookery. Chicken Tikka Masala is one of its most popular

Mit der Zeit gewöhnte sich der britische Gaumen an die würzige Küche Indiens und heutzutage haben eine ganze Reihe dieser Rezepte einen Ehrenplatz in der Gastronomie des Perfiden Albions erhalten, zu denen auch das Chicken Tikka Masala gehört. Die Verbindung dieses ursprünglich indischen Gerichtes mit der gastronomischen Kultur Englands ist bereits so solide wie der Eurotunnel. Tatsächlich ist es so beliebt, dass angeblich sogar Robin Cook, ein ehemaliger britischer Außenminister, das Tikka Masala als “das wahre Nationalgericht Großbritanniens” bezeichnete.

Ese hombre me hizo descubrir un nuevo mundo, y el pollo tikkamasala es uno de los primeros platos que aprendí”.

Estrictamente hablando, tikka es la forma en que se elabora el pollo: deshuesado y macerado 24 horas con especies y yogur. Masala hace referencia a la combinación de hierbas —literalmente significa "mezcla de especias"— que han de ser muy picantes. “De todas maneras, antes de cocinarlo, preguntamos a los comensales sus preferencias y en función de esto ponemos más o menos pimienta de cayena”.

Allá donde va, Carlos siempre ha encontrado huecos en la carta para dejar el sello picante de las especias indias, y este pollo tikkamasala es el mejor ejemplo. El jengibre, el curry, el pimentón y la cayena forman un puente indestructible entre dos mundos que ya son uno. Y muy intenso. Dios salve al picante.

“When I was studying in Guayaquil, my teacher, Ricardo Bot, opened the door for me onto this culture. That man introduced me to a new world, and Chicken Tikka Masala was one of the first dishes I learnt.”

Strictly speaking, tikka is the way in which the chicken is prepared: it is taken off the bone and left to marinate in spices and yoghurt. Masala refers to the combination of spices, it literally means ‘a mixture of spices’ which should be very hot. “However, we do talk to diners when we take their order, and we vary the amount of chilli that goes in depending on their preferences.” Wherever he has worked, Carlos has always found a little corner on the menu for some Indian spices, and Chicken Tikka Masala is one of his favourites. Ginger, curry, paprika and chilli make for a mighty bridge, a very intense one that has crossed from one world to another.

Dieser Mann ließ mich eine neue Welt entdecken und Chicken Tikka Masala war eines der ersten Gerichte, die ich lernte”.

Genau gesagt ist Tikka die Art, wie das Hähnchen zubereitet wird: das Fleisch ohne Knochen wird 24 Stunden in eine Marinade aus Gewürzen und Joghurt eingelegt. Masala bezieht sich auf die verwendeten Gewürze, die sehr scharf sein müssen — wörtlich bedeutet es "Gewürzmischung". “Wir fragen unsere Gäste auf alle Fälle vor der Zubereitung nach ihren Vorlieben und nehmen dementsprechend mehr oder weniger Cayennepfeffer”. Wo immer er auch ist, gelingt es Carlos, die scharfe Note der indischen Gewürze in die Speisekarte aufzunehmen, und das Chicken Tikka Masala ist dafür das beste Beispiel. Ingwer, Curry, Paprikagewürz und Cayennepfeffer bilden eine unzerstörbare Brücke zwischen zwei Welten, die bereits zu einer zusammengeschmolzen sind. Einer sehr intensiven. Gott schütze die Schärfe.

1. Macerar durante 24 horas el pollo deshuesado y troceado con sal, pimienta, vino blanco y yogur.

Aquí, el domingo deja de ser un día de descanso para convertirse en el más importante y ajetreado de la semana. A lo largo de esta calle y en los alrededores, decenas de puestos callejeros venden muebles, música, ropa, comida y todo aquello que se pueda imaginar. Brick Lane es vida, arte, modernidad y multiculturalidad.

El término urbanístico de calle a Brick Lane se le queda muy corto. Su longitud hace que resulte necesario dividir el mercado en dos partes diferenciadas: Upmarket, por si vas en busca de comida o ropa, y Backmarket para aquellos que solo quieren curiosear puestecillos variados y llenos de trastos.

La razón es que en esta zona se concentra la mayor parte de la comunidad bengalí de Londres; de ahí que, hasta hace no mucho, Brick Lane fuera más conocido como Banglatown.

Tras la batalla de Waterloo, seguramente el Duque de Wellington se tomaría un tiempo de descanso. Y si hubiera existido, sin duda habría reservado una habitación en el H10 London Waterloo de la capital británica para saborear su victoria sobre Napoleón.

El hotel está situado en Waterloo Road, muy cerca de puntos turísticos como el London Eye y el Big Ben, y a cinco minutos de la estación de tren y metro de Waterloo Station.

Pero si hay que destacar dos puntos fuertes en el H10 London Waterloo, esos son su restaurante Three O Two y su Waterloo Sky Bar, su nuevo bar-terraza.

La cocina del Three O Two está dirigida por el chef extremeño David Ovejo.

Su carta ofrece una cocina mediterránea de autor con toques españoles, con un plato destacado por encima de todos: el bacalao confitado con alioli de café. Recientemente ha sido galardonado con el Lukas Award al mejor restaurante español en Londres. Rodeado de una enorme cristalera, el Three O Two ofrece excelentes vistas a Wellington Road.

En la 8ª planta del hotel se ubica el Waterloo Sky Bar, desde donde se puede contemplar una de las mejores panorámicas del London Eye, la City o The Shard. Abierto a partir de las 17:30, este nuevo espacio ofrece una cuidada carta de cócteles y gin-tonics Premium, además de snacks y elaboradas tapas.

Huevos rotos con setas, gambas y ajos tiernos o croquetas de cabrales y cebolla caramelizada son algunas de ellas.

Wellington se sentiría orgulloso de sus compatriotas... y muy relajado.

After the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington would have taken some time to rest. No doubt if it had existed then, he would have booked a room at the H10 London Waterloo in the British capital to savour his victory over Napoleon.

The hotel is located on Waterloo Road, close to famous sights such as the London Eye and Big Ben, and five minutes away from the train and underground station of Waterloo.

However, if we were to highlight two special things about the H10 London Waterloo, those would be its restaurant, Three O Two, and its new bar-terrace, the Waterloo Sky Bar. The kitchens of the Three O Two are run by the Extremaduran chef, David Ovejo.

Its menu offers signature Mediterranean cuisine with Spanish touches, with one dish that stands out above the others: cod confit with coffee aioli. Recently it was given the Lukas Award for the best Spanish restaurant in London. Surrounded by an enormous window, the Three O Two offers excellent views over Wellington Road.

On the 8th floor of the hotel is the Waterloo Sky Bar, which offers one of the finest panoramas of the London Eye, the City and The Shard. Open from 17:30, this new space offers a quality menu of cocktails and premium gin & tonics, as well as snacks and tapas such as broken eggs with mushrooms, prawns with garlic shoots, and croquets with caramelised onion and cabrales cheese.

Wellington would be proud of his compatriots... and very relaxed indeed.

xiste un paraíso en la Riviera Maya que la tierra estaba escondiendo. No hace muchos años que los descubridores de este río-xenote se adentraron en las oquedades del suelo buscando dónde llegarían las galerías que encontraron. Se toparon con Río Secreto. Nada menos que una maravilla natural oculta de 15 kilómetros de largo.

Se trataba de un sueño de pasadizos, aguas turquesas, estalactitas y estalagmitas que permanecía escondido bajo la superficie. Un subterráneo de atmósfera surrealista diseñado por la naturaleza para experimentar un recorrido de tranquilidad y silencio.

Sus primeros tramos son caminables. Miles de picudas formaciones rocosas pendiendo de las paredes de estas cuevas son el preludio de un chapuzón en las aguas transparentes. En el baño, arte en piedra, gotas y erosión.

Hacen falta entre dos y tres horas para poder recorrer los 600 metros de ruta accesible que compagina la caminata y el nado por este túnel ancestral con aspiraciones a museo.

Esta reserva natural protegida a escasos 15 kilómetros de Playa del Carmen, antes conocida como Pool Tunich, es la cueva no inundada más larga de la Península de Yucatán. Cada formación geológica ahí dentro tardó miles de años en constituirse, un hecho que deja grabado en las líneas de su mineral la historia del planeta.

Una de las agencias de turismo local del lugar posee un recorte de lo que aseguran es un entrecomillado de uno de los descubridores de estas cavernas.

Sus palabras tras fluir por primera vez en las aguas de Río Secreto fueron: «Todo lo que aprendí en mi vida cobraba sentido solamente por atestiguar lo que tenía enfrente…».

It was not until recently that the discoverers of this river–cenote began to explore the subterranean cavities and the tunnels they found there. It was then that they stumbled upon Río Secreto, a concealed natural wonder that is 15 kilometres long.

Río Secreto is a dreamland of passageways, turquoise waters, and stalactites and stalagmites, which have remained hidden under the ground, a naturally designed surrealist subterranean environment that offers silence and peace of mind.

The first stretches can be walked.

The thousands of pointed rock formations hanging from the walls of the caves serve as a prelude to a dip into the transparent waters, where visitors can swim among rock art, droplets and erosion. Between two and three hours are required to take in the accessible 600 metres of the route, walking and swimming through this ancient tunnel and natural museum.

This protected nature reserve, located just 15 kilometres from the Playa del Carmen and formerly known as Pool Tunich, is the longest non-flooded cave in the Yucatán Peninsula. Each geological formation was thousands of years in the making and the history of the planet is recorded in the lines of the minerals.

One of the local tourist agencies has a clipping with what it claims is a quote from one of the people who discovered the caves. His words, after feeling the flow of Río Secreto’s waters for the first time, were: “everything I have learnt in my life made sense as I contemplated the sight before my eyes…”

Im Bad dann Kunst in Stein, Tropfen und Erosion. Man benötigt zwei bis drei Stunden, um die zugängliche Strecke von 600 Metern in diesem uralten Tunnel, der an ein Museum erinnert, zurückzulegen, wobei sowohl gewandert als auch geschwommen wird.

Das Naturschutzgebiet ist knapp 15 Kilometer vom Strand Playa del Carmen entfernt. Früher war es unter dem Namen Tunich Pool bekannt. Es ist die längste Höhle auf der Halbinsel Yucatán, die nicht überflutet ist. Jede einzelne geologische Formation dort drinnen entstand in Tausenden von Jahren. Dies sieht man auch an den mineralischen Linien, die durch die Geschichte des Planeten geprägt wurden.

Eine lokale Tourismusagentur besitzt einen Ausschnitt, von dem sie versichert, es sei ein Zitat eines der Entdecker dieser Grotten. Nachdem er zum ersten Mal in die Wasser des Rio Secreto gestiegen war, sagte er: «Alles, was ich in meinem Leben gelernt habe, bekam erst dadurch Sinn, dass ich Zeuge dessen wurde, was vor mir lag…».

iseño, tradición y artesanía mallorquina. Las telas de lenguas, o ikats, forman dibujos geométricos que recrean las llamas del fuego; son de colores llamativos y con infinidad de tonalidades.

Están inspiradas en el legado de los pobladores de las Islas Baleares y en recopilaciones de antiguas muestras encontradas hace años en la isla.

Gracias a la insularidad de Mallorca y como punto de parada de navíos que realizaban rutas comerciales entre Asia y Europa, se cree que tienen un origen oriental.

Hoy han evolucionado y se han convertido en algo autóctono.

Con su toque mediterráneo, se utilizan frecuentemente para hacer alpargatas de esparto o para el textil del hogar.

Teixits Vicens es una empresa artesanal especializada en la fabricación de telas de lenguas. De carácter familiar, se dedica desde el año 1854 a la elaboración de estas piezas siguiendo un proceso de fabricación manual, tal y como se hacía antiguamente. El primer paso es preparar el urdimbre a base de algodón blanco y teñirlo en porciones según el dibujo deseado.

Design, tradition and Majorcan craftsmanship. Majorca’s ikat textiles form geometric designs that recall the flames of a fire. They come in attractive colours and an infinite range of tones.

The textiles are inspired by the legacy of the inhabitants of the Balearic Islands and a collection of old specimens found years ago on the island.

Majorca’s status as a stop-off point for ships plying the trade routes between Asia and Europe means it is believed the textiles originated in the east. Today, however, they have evolved and over time they have become autochthonous to the island. With a Mediterranean touch, they are often used for the traditional fibre-soled alpargata shoes and household textiles.

Teixits Vicens is a handcraft company that specialises in making ikats. The family business dates back to 1854 and produces the textiles via a traditional hand manufacture process.

The first step involves preparing the warp using white cotton and dying it in portions based on the desired design. Once complete, the more delicate part begins, which consists of building up the drawing. Finally,

Para realizar el proyecto de renovación, se realizó un estudio de usabilidad entre los clientes donde plasmaron sus necesidades en relación con los hoteles. El resultado es un diseño que mejora la experiencia del usuario, mucho más visual, donde las fotos y vídeos de los hoteles son las protagonistas. El portal se ha segmentado por tipología de cliente para que pueda encontrar fácilmente la oferta que más se ciña a sus necesidades.

Ha mejorado también el proceso de reserva, donde, además de los precios, el usuario cuenta con un calendario de disponibilidad y la posibilidad de contratar servicios adicionales en un entorno mucho más atractivo y funcional.

Cada hotel dispone de un microsite donde la información está recogida en diferentes apartados.

Así, se muestran los servicios del hotel y sus instalaciones, galería de imágenes y opiniones de usuarios, tanto de clientes como de otros portales de opinión.

This multichannel website can be viewed from any device (PC, tablet, smartphone…), making it very versatile.

For the renovation project, a usability study was carried out with customers, who expressed their needs with regard to hotels. The result is a design that improves the user’s experience and is more visual, where photos and videos of the hotels take centre stage. The site is divided up by type of guest so that these guests can easily find what they are looking for.

The booking process has also been improved, and users can find not just prices, but also a calendar of availability and have the chance to reserve additional services in a more engaging and functional environment.

Each hotel has a microsite with information in different sections. These include the hotel’s services and facilities, a gallery of images and user opinions, posted by guests or taken from other opinion sites.

Sevilla tiene duende. Y eso es lo que respiramos al entrar en el H10 Corregidor en Sevilla, el Hotel Boutique de 76 habitaciones recién adquirido por la cadena H10 Hotels, y situado en pleno centro histórico y comercial de la capital andaluza.

En un edificio de estilo andalusí y arabesco que conserva la esencia de Sevilla en su arquitectura, este nuevo hotel cuenta con un típico patio sevillano donde se ubica el restaurante para desayunos y una cafetería con terraza.

Este es el tercer hotel que H10 Hotels dispone en Andalucía.

Seville has something special, known here as duende, and it can be felt in the air at the H10 Corregidor in Seville. This three-star hotel, recently acquired by the H10 Hotels chain, has 76 bedrooms and is located in the historical and business centre of the Andalusian capital.

The traditional Andalusian style of the hotel, with its Moorish touches, preserves the essence of Seville. This new building has a traditional Sevillian courtyard for the breakfast restaurant as well as a café with terrace. It is H10 Hotels’ third establishment in Andalusia.

H10 Duque de Loulé abre sus puertas en Lisboa H10 Hotels acaba de inaugurar en Lisboa el H10 Duque de Loulé, un 4 estrellas superior de 89 habitaciones ubicado en un edificio histórico del siglo XVIII del centro de la capital lusa.

El hotel cuenta con detalles del arte portugués, como los azulejos blancos y azules, fusionados con elementos modernos de gran funcionalidad. La decoración ha sido realizada por el estudio Contemporain de Lázaro Rosa-Violán. Su terraza chill-out situada en la décima planta, donde poder disfrutar de las vistas a Lisboa y el Tajo, un restaurante a la carta y un bar-biblioteca completan los servicios de ocio para sus clientes.
