Nancy Njenge
MPhil Global Health & Human Rights Defender Bergen, Norway
Nancy Njenge is a 25 year old human rights defender from Zimbabwe. She started her activism work as a student leader at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe where she advocated for affordable and accessible education. She was elected into the Student Representative Council in her second year. In 2019, she was elected the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Gender Secretary at a national level (2019-2021). ZINASU is the biggest, and only independent students Union that has stood up against oppression and fought for democracy, respect of fundamental freedoms and human rights.
Nancy got to partner with several civil society organisations on women and youth issues, social and economic justice as well as democracy and human rights. She was persecuted by the regime a number of times and was arrested and detained for speaking out on several occasions. Her outstanding work as a female human rights defender got her opportunities to contribute to various individuals and organisations that work for the protection and support of human rights defenders, for example the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Assembly and Association, Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network and many other organisations.
Nancy got a Students at Risk scholarship to Norway in 2022 and she had to leave Zimbabwe in May 2022 for Uganda, she was issued with a warrant of arrest 2 days after leaving and could not go back home, therefore she came straight to Norway and is yet to go back due to fear of being jailed.
Nancy is currently studying a Masters in Global Health at the University of Bergen and hopes to continue doing her work in the human rights field until the world is a better place.

I’m Jannantun Nayeem Prity, a writer, artist, and human rights activist currently residing in Cité internationale des arts, Paris. I pursued my undergraduate degree in Fine Art with a focus on Arts and Crafts at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. My coursework covered a broad range of subjects including Figure Drawing, Set Design, Tapestry, Screen- Print, Wood Carving, and so on.
However, during my final year of study, I faced oppression from the Bangladeshi government under the Digital Security Act, a highly controversial blasphemy law, which led me to flee the country in response to ongoing death and rape threats from both ruling party extremists and fundamentalists.
Despite this, I’ve published 11 books with renowned publishers in Bangladesh(the last one has been banned from the biggest bookfair in Bangladesh on February 2023) and have received numerous awards from various institutions there. I had my first open studio exhibition at Cité internationale des arts on 6th April, 2022, author talk in the human rights festival by Rapolitics in Aarhus, Denmark on 2022, digital art exhibition and author’s talk on 16th March, 2023 at Bibliotheque Canopee, Paris.

Ivanna Malchevska Project Manager Center for Civil Liberties Kyiv, Ukraine
Ivanna Malchevska is project manager of the Center for Civil Liberties and coordinator of the
OZON Public Monitoring Group. We monitor police actions on peaceful assemblies (whether they violate the right to peaceful assembly), courts and local authorities.
The OZON public monitoring group is an initiative of the Center for Civil Liberties, which carries out public control over the activities of law enforcement agencies, courts, and local self-government in various regions of Ukraine. Volunteers monitor the provision of freedom of peaceful assembly and prepare recommendations for state authorities and international organizations. Since 2018, the initiative has also been monitoring the effectiveness of investigating cases of pressure and persecution of civil society activists in Kyiv and the regions. With the beginning of a full-scale war, OZON volunteers joined in documenting war crimes. And from November 2022, OZON launched the National Campaign of monitoring bomb shelters to help the authorities solve problems in the civil system.
The initiative is active in different regions of the country and brings together ordinary people, regardless of legal knowledge or special experience to exercise civilian control over the actions of the authorities. We believe that every citizen of Ukraine can practice public control over the government.
