Souper Bowl Sunday Success

On Sunday, February 8, the church gathered after worship to join in a soup and chili cook off to help the youth and children ministries raise money to attend Passport Camps this summer. The cook off was a delicious success that concluded with a raffle drawing to win the opportunity to pie Pastor David. As you can see in the picture above, Claire Haun was the proud winner of that experience! Here is what Rev. Beth Bailey had to say about theafternoon:

“Our Souper Bowl Cook-Off was filled with many talented chefs and lots of fun! We had a great time trying different soups and chilis made by different members of our congregation. The winners for our cook-off were Addie Stewart for the chili category and Isaac Silver for the soup category. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, attended, and donated to help our youth and children attend Passport Campsthissummer!”

Ash Wednesday Service

Wednesday, February 18th, 7 pm

Ash Wednesday marks a holy beginning. We will gather as a church family to step into the season of Lent together—a season of honesty, reflection, grace, and renewal. I hope you will come, and even more, that you might invite someone to walk this road with you.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most ancient and meaningful moments in the Christian year. We receive ashes on our foreheads or hands as a simple, powerful reminder: we are human, we are finite, and we are deeply loved by God. The words spoken —“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”—are not meant to shame us, but to free us. They call us to humility, truthfulness, and hope.

In Scripture, ashes are a sign of repentance and renewal—not performative religion, but hearts turned back toward God. As Isaiah reminds us, the truest act of faith is not what we display outwardly, but how we live inwardly: loosening the bonds of injustice, caring for our neighbors, and becoming repairers of what is broken. Ash Wednesday invites us to begin Lent not with guilt, but with grace—with a willingness to be honest about who we are and open to who God is shaping us to become.

This year, our Ash Wednesday service will also center on water and baptism—remembering that before we are marked with ashes, we are claimed by love. Before repentance, there is belonging. Before transformation, there is grace. We begin Lent by remembering who we are and whose we are.

This service is quiet, reflective, and deeply meaningful. It is appropriate for all ages and all stages of faith—whether Lent is familiar or brand new to you. If you have ever felt weary, disconnected, or longing for a fresh start, this night is for you.

Come as you are. Bring a friend. Begin again.

Let us start this Lenten journey together—starting with God

Off to a Good Start

Wow, January is already history, and what a month it was! BRRRRR! But thank you for not letting the cold temps freeze your stewardship. Here is a summary of our stewardship for January.

Ministry Budget

The operating budget that covers all the basic administrative and missional expenses of the church. We ended the month with offerings exceeding the amount you gave last January by $686. That’s not bad though considering that the last Sunday of January was a snowy Sunday, which always wreaks havoc on the offerings. The total received for January was $82,677. As usual, the expenses for the month exceeded the revenue (the expenses were $130,830), so let’s be diligent in making our gifts faithfully and timely.

Watering the Roots Capital Fund

An accumulating fund that banks money to be used for major future renovation and repair projects.

Gifts received in January totaled $1,475 and there were no expenses. The balance of the fund is $358,043.76.

The Benevolence Fund

Provides assistance to persons unable to meet their basic needs for housing, food, clothing, medical care, etc.

It is no secret to most of us that the cost of decent housing in this area is very high. In January we had two more of our member families face critical housing issues, who were assisted through this fund. Gifts received were $5,115 and the expenditures totaled $30,007, leaving the fund in deficit by $24,892. Gifts to this fund over and above your regular gifts are well used and gratefully received.

Don’t forget. All offerings and gifts received are credited to the Ministry Budget unless otherwise designated. So, if you wish to make a gift to Watering the Roots Capital Fund or the Benevolence Fund please make that designation.
