I
have had the privilege, and headache, of living in almost every kind of space under the sun. From 3,000-plus-square-foot homes to dorm rooms to duplexes and studio apartments, due to life circumstances, my days in a single dwelling are always numbered. And, yet, I’ve always been able to find comfort in the place I rest my head — often right before I have to rent another U-Haul for a day. My parents often reminisce about how disorganized I was as a child and how difficult it was for me to unpack once we moved to a new place — finding the right spots for my haul of stuff. I was, in essence, the antithesis of an interior designer, choosing to live with little to no care about my space’s feng shui. As time progressed, my skills as a novice interior decorator improved, but it admittedly takes me months to fully realize the importance of the synergy between me and my space. This leads to my unequivocal respect for interior designers and decorators. They are truly surgeons of the home, operating with the tools at their disposal — color palettes, spatial recognition, and mood boards — to create comfort and efficiency. In this issue, we celebrate Fort Worth’s best interior designers and decorators with our third annual Design Awards. We ultimately whittled over 120 submissions down to 39 finalists — a difficult task given the talented designers of this city. In the pages that follow, you’ll see gorgeous images of well-designed spaces and short write-ups of each nominee by the talented Amber Bell, who manages to capture the harmony of each room with words. allpaper is no longer a telltale sign of a dated room. In recent interiors, wallpaper has become a fresh way to add a little pizazz to your space. However, choosing the right wallpaper can be more than a little daunting. After all, it is essentially a tattoo for your walls. Consider the feeling you’re trying to evoke when choosing a wallpaper. Calm? Try cooler tones with a nature theme. If you’re wanting a more playful vibe, go with a busier pattern in a punchier color palette. If you plan on hanging art on top of your wallpaper, consider scale — a large-scale pattern tends to compete with wall hangings. Above all, wallpaper is a very personal preference, so be sure to choose patterns and colors you won’t tire of quickly. by Rachael Lindley

T
he stark disparity of black and white — day and night, light and dark — has consistently inspired artists, filmmakers, musicians, and interior design. A more contrasting pair on the color spectrum does not exist, and this, ironically, results in a match made in heaven. In a décor sense, despite the colors’ severity, black and white offer a wide range of design possibilities. Black, white, and camel is a minimalist’s dream — bonus points if you add copious amounts of houseplants. Black, white, and pink, however? Instant glamour. Black, white, and emerald green evokes a sophisticated vibe. With countless ways to incorporate these colors into your palette, there’s no wrong way to do it.

T
he hoard of glass buildings tucked away on the western coast of Canada on the Burrard Peninsula is home to a treasure trove of contemporary design. While the ocean keeps winters from approaching the harshness of the Midwest, the ever-prevalent rain between October and March keeps residents indoors, making their living spaces all the more important. You’d be hard-pressed to find a larger per capita population that takes their interior design as seriously as Vancouver. The city’s most prevalent design elements take their cue from the area’s natural environment, which led to the West Coast style that initially developed in Vancouver. Rather than fight with its surroundings, the West Coast style seeks to blend its structures with the natural elements — this school of design has become a major influence over the past several decades. If it isn’t already, this ultramodern city that played host to the 2010 Winter Olympics should be on every interior designer’s bucket list for visiting and gathering inspiration. The angular and progressive architecture, plethora of modernist landmarks, and jaw-dropping museums will easily fill any vacation itinerary. But we also recommend taking a stroll through these shops that could have you leaving town with some extra luggage.

T
he female-owned and family-run B Smart Builders has mastered the art of seamlessly blending efficiency and problem-solving while curating beautiful spaces. Cheryl Bean is the founder and owner of B Smart Builders, and her daughter, Heather Smitherman, helps make clients’ visions a reality. This dream team can tackle the trickiest of renovations and add-ons and do so while staying on budget and on time — an unfortunate rarity in the industry. However, what really sets B Smart apart is that it wants to get to know its clients on a personal level to ensure ultimate satisfaction from beginning to end. B Smart’s extensive work speaks for itself and can be found all over Fort Worth. What would you say B Smart’s specialties are? Cheryl — We take projects from conception all the way to the end, which I’m finding is very rare in this industry. We are also a family business that is female owned with formal architecture and engineering training. We feel that being a female-owned and -operated business gives us a bit of an edge because we relate so well to our female clientele. Heather — One of our largest strengths is that we know the industry inside and out. We know tips and tricks to help save thousands [of dollars] here and there. At the end of the day, everyone has a budget. We never show clients anything they can’t afford or will end up regretting. We provide as many options as we possibly can from a modest price point all the way up to extremely high-end. We get to know our clients on a personal level, and that helps us advise them and tailor plans to their specifications. Is there any advice that you’d give our readers embarking on a renovation? Cheryl — You don’t have to have plans before starting a renovation. We pride ourselves in helping clients come up

with a solution, and any contractor you hire should be able walk through and conceptualize what the space can be. Choose a contractor you can get along with. That’s part of our transparency because we want people to be involved on a daily basis. Inevitably, things will go wrong — weather, foundation issues, termites — but a good contractor will take it in stride and present you with all of the options. Heather — It’s a long and hard process, but it is so very rewarding when you’re done. Have some inspiration photos of what you like and be involved. Usually, you can live in your home during your renovation, and you save money doing so, and having you close allows us to educate you through the process. What trends are you seeing in the renovation market? Cheryl — We’re starting to see some color come back into vogue. Hallelujah! For a while, it’s been white, gray, and black, and now we’re shifting into some warmer colors. I’m also seeing an increase of larger mud rooms. There are some really creative solutions out there that allow kids to have a place for backpacks, practice clothes, coats, and shoes.
Heather — We work on a lot of homes that were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and usually we’re coming in to open up the space, but I’m seeing more of a desire to keep some of the unique retro features and blend them in with the newer aspects of the home. For example, we are working on a house now that has these big, beautiful brick archways, and we are incorporating that into the design to add some history and character. I feel like that also helps with the flow of the home. I hate when you walk into a house and it’s very obvious some rooms have been renovated and others haven’t. When you combine the old with the new, it helps to make the space more seamless. What does the future look like for B Smart Builders? Cheryl — We would love to expand into more custom new builds and more whole home renovations. We are in the process of creating a portal where you can access the progress of your project. We hope to have that up and running by the first of the year. Heather — We continue to learn more about smart homes and how to incorporate those innovations and technologies into our clients’ homes. B Smart is using 3D technology more and more to give our clients a more concrete understanding of their home’s process and what it will look like in the end. We are always trying to improve upon different processes to go above and beyond for our clientele.

getting pampered … you expect a certain feeling, a certain vibe of high-end luxury, like you’re being spoiled a little bit,” Blau says. “You have to have a place to hang your dress and hang your coats. And mirrors — you can’t have enough mirrors.” The bathrooms don’t skimp on design either. The women’s restroom especially emphasizes the art deco vibe, with sunburst plastic tiling contrasting with feminine, patterned wallpaper. The handcrafted ceramic hands, which act as coat hooks, are the highlight of the men’s restroom. There is one area that holds back on design, however — the event space itself, kept neutral on purpose to allow clients to customize the space to their liking. The space’s original brick, wood beams, and columns create a rustic character; some wood
columns were removed and used to create rolling bars available for client use. The space can also be made smaller with the use of divider curtains that Blau and a friend made themselves. There isn’t much natural light in the space, but the small windows offer their own element of surprise — when a train passes by on the nearby tracks, it creates “party lights” that blink through the window, Blau says. Blau’s still putting finishing touches on The Ostreum’s design. Eventually, she hopes to finish out the flex space (currently used as anything from the band’s green room to a private space for first looks). She’d also like to put a vinyl mural on the revolving door — one that looks like brick to camouflage with the rest of the wall. Sneaky, sneaky. “[Venues] are a lot more than just, open up the doors, have four walls, throw in some tables and chairs, and go,” Blau says. “You have to think about how people will use the space for different events, how to make it versatile and functional, and how everything flows.”

A former finalist on HGTV’s “Design Star,” she went on to host her own TV show on HGTV called “Donna Decorates Dallas” with over 30 episodes. Still managing her interior design business but never one to shy away from the camera, Donna now has her own web-based television network, Home Design Television (HDTV), that will launch this year with several new shows that Donna will also be starring in.
After graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from the University of North Texas, Lisa Teakell spent over 12 years as an interior designer at local mainstay Joseph Minton. She has since become an entrepreneur, going solo and opening her own interior design business, Lisa Teakell Design, LLC. Steering away from a one-size-fits-all approach, Lisa works in numerous styles and excels at effective communication with homeowners to achieve desired results. Lisa is the incoming chair of the American Society of Interior Designers Fort Worth Design Community.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Shauna Glenn Design Small spaces don’t have to equal small impact, as interior designer Shauna Glenn proves with this Jack-and-Jill bathroom remodel in a 1926 bungalow. “Keeping the era of the home in mind, we went with retro-inspired fixtures and hardware,” Shauna says of the brass-toned accents. “And we found this amazing art deco-styled wallpaper from Hygge and West that just brought it all together.” The coral scallops and metallic gold floral motif by Tilton Fenwick were the perfect statement maker. Finishing touches include a built-in cabinet for space-savvy storage, funky artwork, and a mango wood stool in the glass-enclosed shower.
MODERN CHARM Christine Zeiler Interiors “This project started with the homeowner’s

big kitchen remodel and turned into an If You Give a Mouse a Cookie situation,” says designer Christine Zeiler. The initial reno and new flooring snowballed into a complete overhaul, including this bathroom. The space touts bright, clean lines and modern elements while retaining some of the 100-year-old home’s original charm. “I loved their old tub and love keeping original items as much as possible,” says Christine, who outfitted it with new polished, nickel plumbing fixtures to match the rest. The custom vanity, painted Sherwin-Williams Sea Serpent, complements pretty cement tiles above it from Bottega Design Gallery while herringbone-patterned, matte porcelain tile flooring adds subtle texture.

A MASTERFUL RETREAT Anna Jones Designs Transitioning a master bedroom from dark golds and reds to a more refreshed color palette was a welcome challenge for interior designer Anna Jones. She created custom bedding and floor-to-ceiling drapes from Kravet fabrics for a lightened effect. “We came in with more of the creams and some celadon green, as well as textures to make it look new and spa-like for a relaxing atmosphere,” says Anna, who chose Retreat by SherwinWilliams for the wall color and recovered the chairs for a cozy but luxe seating area. A pair of sculptural table lamps from John-Richard, a beaded chandelier from Currey and Company, and an animal print rug add the perfect dose of elegance for a truly masterful bedroom retreat.

Landry Designs dreamed up for this homeowner’s bonus space in the rafters. “The client requested a bed-and-breakfast feel, wanting her guests to have a warm, inviting experience during their stay,” says owner Lisa Landry. “Shiplap adds a strong architectural element to a space … It comes in different widths, and the wider the planks, the fewer lines you’ll have, which makes the room feel a bit larger and less busy.” A soft, neutral color palette balanced by unique pieces, like a beautiful antique chest Lisa had refinished and nightstands custom made by an artisan in Mexico, adds a touch of rustic charm.

DREAMING OF FLORALS Landry Designs A classic style coupled with time-enduring pieces was the focus for this darling nursery. “We wanted a room that would last for many years,” says interior designer Lisa Landry. She selected a beautiful dresser and convertible crib from Legacy Classic Kids and used decorative elements like a glamorous chandelier, soft-toned drapes, and stunning wallpaper by Seabrook for a little feminine sophistication. “I really love the wallpaper highlighted with the subtle addition of the framed monogram of the baby’s initials,” explains Lisa. “I think the dramatic floral plays so well with the crystal and gold accents. A perfect little princess space.”

with family heirlooms,” says designer Tori Rubinson of her client’s adorable space. “The dresser and mirror were in the owner’s bedroom when she was a child, and the artwork was also passed down in the family.” Tori discovered the gorgeous blue rug at HomeGoods and paired it with a delicate floralaccentuated light fixture from Pottery Barn Kids for a fanciful look. Spoonflower window treatments rest easily against soft-toned wallpaper by Schumacher. “I wanted the wallpaper to be able to grow with the client’s daughter as she got older,” adds Tori. “I thought it was perfectly whimsical and sophisticated all at the same time.”

“This is a versatile space that needed to function as a guest room and a playroom,” she explains. The striped wall was painted Teresa’s Green by Farrow and Ball, and neutral textures included woven baskets (that also doubled as toy storage), an antelope-patterned rug, and John Robshaw sofa pillows.
But the star of the show was Tori’s own bespoke light fixture made with HomeGoods baskets. “I have seen spiderinspired light fixtures in the past and baskets used as pendants, so I just combined the two ideas,” she says. “It was super fun to make.”

GRAND DESIGN DEFINED Kay Genua Designs The very first item procured for this dining room redesign was a fabulous antique chandelier, which made a statement all on its own. To add to the impactful look, Kay Genua also incorporated vivid wallpaper balanced by beautiful Dedar Milano silk draperies. She then selected seat cushions and a large rug in the perfect hues to tie everything together. The marble mantel made its way onto the scene straight from the Big Apple — Kay discovered it while on a trip to New York with her daughter. The Stickley dining table and chairs, as well as a hand-selected assortment of antique silver and plates, completed the final look. “This couple loves to entertain,” says Kay, “and this grand room is the perfect place.”

And the antique hutch by Chairish brings in a touch of drama, which Tori personalized by lacquering it in Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. “It’s my favorite piece in the room; it has the most beautiful details,” she says. “I love a layered aesthetic, and subtle color variations are just a part of how I bring a room together.”

BOTANICAL IMPACT B Smart Builders “When you have a love for all things botanical, you incorporate it into your home remodel,” says Cheryl Bean, owner of B Smart Builders. She incorporated the leafy print wallpaper for her clients, who are in the garden industry. “It totally reflects their interest.” Beyond the stunning verdant detail, the home originally had no true entry area as the front door opened into the living room. So, Cheryl and her team moved the kitchen to the north side of the home, turned the former kitchen into a dining room, and added a new entryway, which now resides between the dining and living rooms. Refinished flooring provided a seamless transition for the foliage-savvy look.

Lattice-patterned Schumacher wallpaper, a striking red pendant from Ballard Designs, and a large gold mirror and table lamps bring the space together for a cohesive look from start to finish.

This Tanglewood home was brought up to date with an extensive redesign. “We worked with the existing floor plan but opened walls and raised all ceilings in the home to make it feel larger and more open,” says interior designer Tori Rubinson. She incorporated a refreshing palette of whites, creams, and blues — save for the twin boys bedroom, painted a vibrant green for a golfinspired theme that includes their father’s childhood art. For a modern take on traditional, Tori incorporated texture and patterns like reupholstered, antelope-patterned seating for the master bedroom and blue-and-white paisley print wallpaper by Schumacher in the powder bath. And for the kitchen, she chose gleaming Ann Sacks ceramic mosaic tile and Serena and Lily rattan bar stools. The best part for the busy family of five? “It’s as functional as it is beautiful,” Tori says proudly.
Fort Worth-based designer Brenda Blaylock knows how to set a truly remarkable home scene, evidenced by this stunning townhome. It’s the epitome of French country elegance, every room clad in the glow of a warm color palette comprised of champagnes, golds, and taupes. And all the indulgent details, like mirrored finishes and dimensional textiles, add layers of interest to each space. “I selected luxurious velvet and chenille fabrics to give the home rich texture,” says Brenda, “and added vintage embroidered silks to be the outstanding pop in the rooms.” She also brought in various antique pieces, modifying several of them to become artwork or even furniture with weathered patina finishes and baroque carving. No detail was spared for a glamorous home designed to inspire.

THE TUDOR TRANSFORMATION Christine Zeiler Interiors “The master bathroom was tiny, the bedroom had no windows, and the closet was behind the sitting room, which has one of the best views of the city,” explains designer Christine Zeiler of this Tudor home reno. Her new floor plan captured the downtown view and left space for a brilliant bathroom with statuario marble walls and a stunning aged chrome
tub. Each room received the perfect modern touches, like honed Carrara marble counters in the kitchen with a striking mix of metals from antique brass pendants to a custom steel range hood. Even the office stands out with a gorgeous blue monochromatic theme full of texture, thanks to a painted brick fireplace and wood bookcases, diamond window sashes, and coordinating fabrics. “At the end of the project,” says Christine, “my client said I perfectly made her home feel like the best version of her.”

INTO THE GLAMOROUS DARK Anna Jones Designs “I love to create dramatic spaces,” says interior designer Anna Jones. “Part of the fear that most clients have is that if you put a dark paint color on the wall, it’ll make the room shrink.” But combined with lighter upholstery, artwork, and other decorative details, the room features brightened focal points that naturally draw the eye. This Westlake office redo began as a plain white space before Anna transformed it with a coat of Sherwin-Williams Black Fox, then worked in contrast and texture. “The console table with an ivory Shagreen covering adds a nice contrast to the dark, dramatic room,” says Anna. A dazzling gray glass light fixture from Currey and Company and the custom oil-on-canvas artwork deliver the finishing touches for a glitzy take on a traditional workspace.

unused storage room and turned it into a classy, sophisticated library,” Stacie Paxton says of this new-andimproved, intimately designed space. The extensive shelving showcases the client’s family collection of antique books and heirlooms, and the sofa contains a queen-sized bed for accommodating guests. It’s also the perfect spot for reading, working, or lounging with a large TV next to an antique credenza. “We wanted a cozy, rich feel so the walls are painted in the same hue as the upholstery and carpet,” adds Stacie. For the ceiling, she chose a unique wallpaper in coordinating white, dark brown, and charcoal tones and finished the look with wood and brushed gold accents for a little extra glam.

Though Kristi admits it took a bit of persuading to convince her client it was the right move and a little more prodding to paint the custom-designed wall unit black. In the end, though, the results couldn’t have been more perfect. The client was thrilled to have a
dedicated space to display her collectibles and accessories and was also able to use her existing desk and credenza that Kristi incorporated seamlessly. “We chose metallic gold grass cloth and a modern gold light fixture to tie all the elements together,” she says.

COLLECTIVELY COASTAL CHIC The Kitchen Source “Every aspect of this kitchen was carefully thought out and designed to create a comfortable, functional space that uses multiple finishes and textures literally from floor to ceiling,” says Elizabeth Tranberg, kitchen and bath designer for The Kitchen Source. She worked on the project with Atwood Custom Homes owner Jon Atwood and The Interior Collection’s Whitnie Cypert. The cool coastal tones, pretty pops of blue, and crisp white cabinetry are complemented by warm wood ceiling beams and metallic accents like the pendant lights and barstools. Christine incorporated many custom pieces of her own, like the brushed gold pendant light and upholstered barstools and also worked hand in hand with Hull Historical to get the renovation just right. “We knocked out a wall to expand the kitchen and did all new cabinetry,” she says. “A custom-made bar that looks like a piece of furniture and the island are the showstoppers for this kitchen.” Painted Benjamin Moore Salamander, the island provides a cheerful dose of color — akin to those famous deVOL designs — while the beautiful copper-accent vent hood adds contrast. Christine chose living finish brass plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware, which will naturally patina over time, adding yet another enriching detail for a deserving space.

A 12-foot sliding door system and fixed windows flood the vaulted-ceiling room with crisp sunlight. “This living space is a fantastic example of everything you need for entertaining large groups to intimate family gatherings,” says Traci, who worked alongside Cambridge Homes on the new build. Layered rugs anchor the living room, set with a pair of woven rattan sling chairs and a textured pillow-laden sofa — behind which resides a cozy, secondary sitting area. The fireplace wall and entertainment niche feature beautiful stain-grade wood shiplap for a pictureperfect finish.

Kim brought in a beautiful Italian sofa with imported velvet, iron Greek key benches with hand-dipped dyed velvet, and faceted swivel chairs touting pearlized leather. A stunning abstract acrylic and mixed-media artwork by Kevin Tolman hangs above the fireplace, tying the room together. “Every single piece is outstanding,” says Kim. “Especially Chip the chocolate lab.”

A GLASS ACT Heritage Design Studio This sleek, new contemporary home, situated in Southlake, is a vision to behold. “It draws heavily upon modern roots,” says Angela Hough, co-owner of the Southlake-based Heritage Design Studio alongside her husband, Chris Hough. “The architecture revolves around the client’s desire for generous entertaining space.” The entryway features a floating cantilevered staircase as an impressive, dramatic focal point, while equally stunning views of the client’s glistening pool and lush landscaping are seen unobstructed through the many glass walls. And the home’s exterior is an art form in itself. The Houghs incorporated a variety of materials for maximum visual impact like stucco, cut limestone, and Prodema wood panels for a luxuriously sophisticated home.

At just over 4,000 square feet, the home even includes a second-floor observatory with full-glass walls. A BRILLIANT LEVEL D&I Landscape and Construction Co-owners of their Fort Worth-based D&I Landscape and Construction firm, brothers Daniel Novak Jr. and Inman Novak masterminded a gorgeous reno for this Ridglea Hills home turf. “We took advantage of the steep sloping grade in the backyard,” says Inman, “and excavated the outdoor room into the side of the grade.” What began as a blank canvas of dirt and grass resulted in a stunning multilevel backyard retreat with manicured landscaping and a purposeful seating area for the homeowners to both entertain and relax. The final showpiece was a beautiful sculptural fountain made of black canyon onyx, situated on the upper portion of the yard for perfect viewing from every level.

FULL HOME RESTORATION HISTORICALLY UNIQUE, MODERNLY CHARMING Christine Zeiler Interiors “I realized it was important to the homeowners to keep the charm of their house, but they also wanted it to feel updated and bright with a crisp, clean design,” interior designer Christine Zeiler says of her client's home in historic Ryan Place. Handling all the interior design, finish selections, and space planning, Christine reworked the entire floor plan, added a laundry room, and enlarged the kitchen. The revamp called for a smart mix of materials and textures, like a brick veneer backsplash in the kitchen, patterned cement tiles around the fireplace, white oak wood floors, and unlacquered brass finishes that naturally patina. In the end, the home reflected its original authenticity intertwined with the perfect amount of modern mastery.

Josh also incorporated dual master suites, a stylish media space, two private outdoor courtyards, and all the fully automated, hightech systems his client could dream of for a home worthy of the 21st century.

Bottega Design Gallery Montserrat Master Makeover In a space like a master bathroom, every detail matters: The right tile work, fixtures, wall color and lighting can transform a space. Because the home was purchased as a flip property by an investor, Bottega and the designer wanted to make sure the bathroom was memorable and left a lasting effect. One of biggest challenges in the design was

Brenda Blaylock Interiors French Country Elegance The charm of this home will captivate you the moment you enter the front door. The design style was created through the selection of fabrics, finishes, furnishings, and architectural detailing. “It is the perfect balance between sophisticated style and warm and cozy living,” said designer Brenda Blaylock. By offering construction detailing services, the Blaylock design team was able to custom build the majority of the furnishings, working hand in hand with manufacturers during the building process. “During the architectural process, I planned out every room and the furnishings that would go in them so that every square inch would be utilized,” Blaylock said. Beautiful iron doors installed in the ceiling greet you in the entry. But
according to Blaylock, the wow factor in the project is the kitchen with the wood-trimmed decorative box on the vent hood, recessed antique wood floor stamp behind the stove, and carved French lantern lighting over the island. Blaylock describes the design aesthetic of the project as “melding a palette of taupe, golds, and grays with patinaed finishes, not only aesthetically pleasing but warm and inviting.” This project showcases Brenda Blaylock Interiors’ style of design, which is creating spaces that are as beautiful as they are livable. “I love curating homes that entertain and captivate you,” Blaylock said. “This one does just that.”

An Urban Townhome With Soft Modern Lines Elements of Design worked with the builder of this urban townhome to create a stunning three-story model home that fits the lifestyle the DFW buyer expects in luxury living. The project reflects EOD’s full-service design talents to perfection. “Our design team worked with the builder on finalizing details of the architects’ plans, making all selections needed for the construction of the townhome,” said Traci Darden, owner and lead designer for Elements of Design. EOD created a color scheme and design elements that tie each home’s three stories together. The floorplan was designed to offer outdoor living/entertaining spaces on all three levels. Wow factors are implemented on every level of this project: the first-floor flex space with grasscloth wallcovering
and outdoor patio with a fire feature; second-floor main living area — open to the kitchen and dining space — and master suite with a bed wall accented with a metallic natural woven wall covering; and third-floor loft space featuring a bar area with comfy seating for relaxing and enjoying the thirdfloor view. The staircase that brings all three floors together showcases an accent wall and layered “floating” pewter-cast feathers and a 12-foot light fixture that can be seen from each floor. “Our design team created a neutral, timeless space and brought it to life through the use of texture and color,” Darden said. “This project was a showcase to their talents trending to a softer modern feel which is so prevalent with today’s homeowners.”

While you could skip the sweat and order your dinner directly from B&B, chef John Piccolino is also dishing his secrets to the perfect holiday turkey in case you want to do it yourself.
Overall Tips: 1. Break down your turkey — the legs, thighs, wings, and breasts — and keep them separate. Reserve the bones for stock. 2. Cure legs, thighs, and wings for 2 hours and confit your turkey parts except for turkey breasts. 3. Brine the turkey breast for 24 hours. 4. Prepare the giblet gravy.

Shallots, sliced (8 each) Yellow onion, sliced (2 each) Salt and black pepper thyme mix (to taste) 1 gallon chicken stock 1/2 gallon mirepoix (50% onion, 25% of each carrot and celery garlic) 5 pounds garlic
1. Place turkey, water and ice, salt, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, shallots, and onions into a 5-gallon bucket.
3. Bake in oven at 275 F for 1 1/2 – 2 hours or until turkey legs are fork tender.
7. Slice and place on a platter with confit legs, thighs, and wing meat.
4. Remove from fat and let cool to 100 degrees. Remove all meat from bones (save bones for stock) and reserve turkey meat. (Note: This can be done 2 days prior to serving.)

2. On medium heat, continue to cook until roux becomes dark brown in color, continuously stirring.
3. Remove turkey from water, pat dry, season with salt and black pepper.

1 pound turkey giblets 8 ounces Spanish onion, roughly chopped 2 ounces fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup garlic, chopped 1/2 cup shallots, chopped Salt and black pepper (to taste) 2 ounces 80/20 oil blended 8 ounces turkey or chicken stock
1. In a sauté pan, brown off the giblets in oil, then add the remaining ingredients. Let simmer and cover it for 30 minutes. 2. Cool down and grind through a medium-sized grinder plate or pulse in a Cuisinart. Do not make it too fine. 3. Reserve until gravy is going to be made. This can be made 2 – 3 days prior to making the gravy.
(1/2 batch, yield: 2 gallons – enough for about 40 people) 5 turkey bones/necks 1 onion, roughly chopped 1/2 carrot, roughly chopped 1/2 celery, roughly chopped 1/4 garlic, roughly chopped 1/4 shallot, roughly chopped 1 ounce thyme 3 bay leaves 2 ounces black pepper, whole 2 1/2 gallons chicken stock
1. In a 400 F oven, roast bones and necks until golden brown. 2. Place all ingredients in stock pot and simmer for 10 hours. Strain. 3. Clean out stock pot. Place roux in pot and slowly heat. 4. Add turkey stock a little at a time until desired consistency. 5. Add in giblets and continue to simmer for 1 hour. Adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper. 6. It is now ready to serve or cool down. (Note: If too thick, add in more turkey or chicken stock. This can also be done 1 – 2 days ahead of time.)

hile the idea of repurposing shipping containers to create beautiful and unique spaces has been around for a couple of decades, with new recycled offices and living spaces popping up regularly, the trend seems far from reaching its apex. A development in North Fort Worth — a skip from what most deem the city’s creative center — takes the idea to the next level: a

business park designed to attract creative entrepreneurs. The complex, with its colorful and graffitied exterior, stands in stark contrast to the area’s nearby warehouses and prairies. The office spaces, ranging from 900 to 16,000 square feet, are known as the Box Office Warehouse Suites and include retail shops, studios, workshops, and showrooms.
