Summer in the City he first time I visited the home of Katie and Matt Stadler more than a year ago, there were kids — lots of them, though they never sat still long enough for Katie or me to count — running in and out of the house, and she maintained an impressive amount of calm while chaos surrounded her. The second time I visited the Stadler home, the same chaos ensued. And this time, there was a bearded dragon in the dining room.

The second home in this issue took me about 15 minutes west of the Stadlers and worlds away to the home of Charlotte and Houston Kauffman. The first time I visited, there was a quiet breakfast, there were muted colors, there were delicate family heirlooms. The second time I visited, there were all those same things and a newly adopted dog.

In both places, there was kindness and warmness and open arms and a knack for doing the outdoors just right. The Stadlers do it with an outdoor living area, a Green Egg, a bar, a giant dining table and a massive pool they jump in almost daily. For the Kauffmans, it’s a seamless flow of indoor and outdoor courtyards, overgrown wisteria, drop-dead gorgeous views, art and rooftop patios.

There’s a certain challenge that comes along with writing about homes in the middle of the summer because it’s hot. It’s really hot. But these two Fort Worth families know how to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year, whether it’s with walls of windows offering views or a pool to jump in.

Amber Bell balances a “fun-filled life” as a writer and mom (to quadruplets!), having extensive experience writing about travel, weddings and lifestyle. Soft Launch

rbanology Designs, the North Richland Hills design team that won Best Whole Home Design at the 2018 Fort Worth HOME Design Awards, launched a line of throw pillows in April.

Simple stripes, checkered patterns and ikat designs dominate the line of pillows, made with leather and cottons. Urbanology sourced the textiles through the Heritage Textile Process — an Indian company that supplies material to artisans around the world and ensures that workers receive fair pay. The fabrics are woven and dyed by hand, which means no two pillows are exactly alike.

Made in Dallas, the pillows come in neutral hues that reflect Urbanology’s signature neutral color palette that includes light and dark creams, rich leathers, cerulean, and grays.

Ballard Designs Opens at The Shops at Clearfork

Furniture and home décor store Ballard Designs opened its first Texas location in The Shops at Clearfork in May. The new Fort Worth location, the 13th store for the Atlanta-based company, spans 12,484 square feet and sits on a prominent corner facing Monahans Avenue.

The retailer is known for classic European-inspired and modern pieces as well as customizable furniture and drapes. Displays at the new store will change seasonally, and on-site designers will provide consultations at the Design Solutions studio located in the center of the store. While working with a consultant, customers can view up to 70 percent of items found in the Ballard Designs’ catalog, as well as hundreds of fabric swatches.

The store will also be stocked with light fixtures, area rugs, home accents and side tables that shoppers can take home on the same day.

A Dallas store will open in late August.

CASTING CALL High Noon Entertainment and HGTV are casting families in the Fort Worth area who are looking to redesign their home. A new Fort Worth-based TV show starring local designer Grace Mitchell will follow the designer as she renovates and redesigns homes for Fort Worth couples and families.

he shipping container trend lives on with the completion of Box Office Warehouse Suites in Alliance. Just west of Interstate 35 at the Golden Triangle exit, the office, warehouse and retail space, currently available for lease, was built entirely from shipping containers — 120 of them to be exact. The new complex includes a two-story, 24-site beauty salon made out of 10 containers. Denton-based Container

King built the project and helped with the design and planning phases. The company is known for projects nationwide, including container homes, offices and hunting cabins.

Box Office already has a diverse lineup of tenants that includes Happy State Bank, Salon and Spa Galleria, Harman Senior Village, a purse store and a church.

Container King painted the containers in vibrant colors, including red, green, turquoise and TCU purple. The team also hired five artists to create a 20-foot mural.

With 320 square feet to work with, tenants can personalize their containers. If the tenant’s business grows, they can add onto their retail or office space with more shipping containers in the future instead of having to scout out a new location. Many of the suites also feature glass fronts, rooftop space and garage parking.

ocal Fort Worth design firm, Beckley Design Studio, is known for its fearless use of color, so we had to know what it considers its go-to hue. While it’s reluctant to play favorites, these days it can’t ignore lavender. Eat your heart out, millennial pink.

“Lavender is such a pretty, feminine and sophisticated color that can really make a statement in a room,” said Kelley Roberts, one part of Beckley Design Studio with partner Rebecca Atkinson. “It can create a soft and calming look or balance out a brighter color scheme.”

What’s the trick? “If you’re using it in a living area or dining room, it’s important to balance it with a bolder color so the room doesn’t look like a nursery.” Roberts says pairing it with royal blue, coral or emerald green makes a bold and unexpected statement. “We even wallpapered a client’s dining room in pale lavender grasscloth, and even though it’s a light color, the room feels so cozy.”

MICHAEL DUWE Owner, Restoration Homes

t was the first day of the Fort Worth Invitational when I chatted with Restoration Homes owner Michael Duwe at one of his latest projects — a remodel on what he calls “a quirky and heroic lot” on Lynncrest Drive. The desirable location was immediately apparent, as tournament goers flocked to the street to find parking. It sits just a chip putt away from Colonial Country Club.

“It would have been way easier to tear it down, but I’m a glutton for punishment,” Duwe says, standing in the middle of the gutted home while holding extensive architectural plans.

Those plans include adding another level and around 2,000 more square feet. “It will be somewhat Scandinavian or Hugh Newell Jacobsen-looking.” Newell’s known for traditional and modern barnlike architecture found in places like The Hamptons and Napa Valley.

So what caught Duwe’s eye about this home? “The garage was below grade and had a couple of really old cars parked in it,” he says. Those are the odd kinds of things you notice when you’ve been remodeling homes for nearly 20 years. We caught up with him to learn a little more about all of it.

One side note: In the spirit of full disclosure, Restoration Homes remodeled this editor’s home in 2016.

First, I want to get some advice out of you. What can one do to a home to make it look really expensive? I really like dark painted windows on the interior of a home. It helps make the surrounding walls look so rich. I did it on a whim 12-13 years ago just because I liked it, and I still haven’t tired of it.

What's your best piece of remodeling advice? Go for it. You’re going to spend a decent amount of money. Don’t let what you see on TV fool you. And clearly, money doesn’t buy taste, so hire someone that has some.

What’s the most difficult project you’ve ever worked on? Working for a magazine editor and trying to appease her. Kidding of course.

Tell us about the office building you did for Ken Schaefer of Schaefer Advertising. My sister, Ally Arlington,

was the interior designer, and Ken’s sister, Kim, was the architect. We set up many design meetings at The Usual and became friends with a great homeless man we designated the mayor of Magnolia. That area was in the infancy of what it is today.

At one point we had the entire back of the building open as we constructed an elevator shaft. I could stand up there with the building entirely open and see the traffic become heavier and heavier each month.

What remodel project took you the longest to complete? A historic remodel on Avondale in Colonial. The idea was to start small, but as most jobs go, we kept saying, “While we’re here, let’s do this, and this.” The house was already a masterpiece. We added on to the outdoor area and added a Dolby-approved theater.

I believe it’s the only one around.

One of your favorite parts of a remodel is the design and details. I want to know your opinion on a few design trends.

Matching trim and wall color? I’m

a big fan. I never understood why walls were one color and trim was always white.

Boring to me. Tone on tone pops because the materials and textures are different so the sun reflects differently.

Wallpaper? I really can’t get enough.

I want to do a project where the entire house or business is covered completely in wallpaper, much like the British would do. You can actually learn a lot about someone by the wallpaper they choose — animals, patterns, colors, etc.

Brass fixtures? It’s pretty awesome when they’re great, but they’re not all great. It’s kind of like marble — it has looked good forever and will always if mixed with the right design.

Favorite paint color? Sherwin-Williams Urban Bronze. It’s dark and looks black, gray and deep brown at times. I painted an entire room and trim in flat, and I love it. Colors pop off of it, and dark or bright art looks great with it.

What’s next for you? I (along with some partners) have multiple ground-up contemporary-style homes in the works on a unique parcel of land. The homes will be about 4,000-plus square feet and cater to those who want a home for entertaining on gamedays and weekends.

Beautiful Lines A new coffee table book showcases 33 of the most modern homes in Texas.

While one might think Texas’ landscape serves as juxtaposition to modern architecture, the new book from Images Publishing, Texas Modern: Redefining Houses in the Lone Star State, describes how Texas and modern architecture are as natural a pair as Texas and oil.

Helen Thompson — author and senior editor at Modern Luxury Interiors Texas magazine — writes in the introduction that Texas was perfectly poised for this kind of sleek design, thanks to two things: an East Texas oil boom in the late ’30s that led to an abundance of steel and the vision of North Texas architect David R. Williams.

The Sun Rises Again on The Crescent A Fort Worth billionaire buys a Dallas hotel and hires a design firm with a knack for hospitality to renovate the architectural beauty.

hen John Goff and Fort Worth-based Crescent Real Estate repurchased Rosewood’s Crescent Hotel in 2016 (a hotel he previously owned in the ’90s), the first order of business was changing the name — it promptly returned to Hotel Crescent Court. Up next? Just a $33 million redesign. In April the hotel unveiled the renovation that includes updates to all 226 guest rooms and suites, meeting and banquet spaces and the spa. Dallasbased waldrop + nichols studio won the bid for the project — the first major renovation since the hotel opened in 1986. The studio’s impressive portfolio includes Shady Oaks Country Club, The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver and the Omni in Dallas.

The Uptown Dallas hotel anchors The Crescent, an 11-acre, luxury mixed-use development that’s also home to Stanley Korshak, Ascension Coffee and Nobu, among other businesses and restaurants. The development, hotel or no hotel, is already an impressive piece of iconic French architecture.

“We really incorporated that [French architecture] in guest room corridors,” says Andrea Waldrop, the designer behind the hotel’s transformation. She points to padded panels with modern fabric and Traditional French patterns in the hallways. Textured wallpaper in patterns that blur the line between traditional and abstract also grace the wall in the elevator areas. The French architecture was thanks to renowned architect Philip Johnson, who’s responsible for many North Texas landmarks including the Amon Carter Museum, the Fort Worth Water Gardens and the JFK Memorial.

Waldrop says the mansard roof — a four-sided roof with two slopes on each side — was always top of mind during the project.

The roof, along with the curved building, provided both inspiration and challenges. Because the Crescent buildings are curved, a lot of the furniture in the rooms is also curved. “Anything that has a curve to it is a little bit more expensive to build, softer and more elegant,” says Waldrop.

Once you notice the curved furniture that occupies the spaces, it’s hard to unnotice. Curved side tables correspond with desks with curved edges. Arm chairs, daybeds and serpentine sofas dominate guest rooms, suites and the lobby. It all adds to a light and airy aesthetic that’s also comfortable and cozy without sacrificing any sophistication.

The “level of sophistication,” as Waldrop refers to it, is also thanks to the muted color palette. Blushes, creams and grays

dominate the rooms and suites — a conscious decision to ensure the design would be timeless and hold up to future remodels. Curiously and expertly, some of the only pattern can be found in an isolated section of the carpet in each room, in the form of large geometric shapes. “If you look at it from an aerial perspective, it looks like a woman’s dress and like artwork,” Waldrop says.

The lobby, above all other spaces, blends form and function most impressively. The way Waldrop puts it — it’s a well-choreographed lobby.

“It was very important for the lobby to have flexibility,” Waldrop says. “The Crescent is known for its power breakfast, so it was important to make that possible. Then you’ve got people who are just passing through or guests that are waiting for somebody. And then it changes at night, and you have the bar crowd.” All of the lobby’s events happen below sculptural clouds suspended from the ceiling. Made to look like crystal, they are Waldrop’s favorite part of the redesign.

The lobby also touts what the hotel calls “serviceable guest pods” — small, curved concierge-type podiums. Gone is any semblance of a front desk that runs the length of the wall. Instead, the lobby is anchored by Beau Nash — the new champagne bar and cocktail lounge. The cocktail part is taken very seriously, too. Bartenders serve up the Smoke & Rosemary — a crowd favorite that’s placed in a bar top smoker. Smoke billows and oohs and aahs can be heard. This all takes place on top of the chocolate marble bar

top that was imported from Spain. “When we designed the bar, we were conscious of the floor because the floor remained and was original,” said Waldrop. “We had the cream marble, and we wanted it to look like the bar had always been there.” In a sense, it had. Beau Nash opened in 1986 with the original hotel before shuttering in 2004 when ownership changed.

Waldrop’s also particularly proud of a portion of the hotel most people will never see — the Grand Presidential Suite. The design of the 3,035-square-foot suite is a departure from the rest of the rooms. The design, with a strong contrast in color, black and white floors and a dramatic staircase, was based on “An American in Paris”.

But the hardest part? That was the clock. “The biggest challenge was really the schedule because it was quite aggressive,” says Waldrop of the yearlong project. The team met on weekends, every Saturday for two months, to accomplish the renovation on time — all with the goal of finding the perfect balance between conservation and transformation.

A West Side Nest Houston and Charlotte Kauffman update a once-weary Westover Hills home into a stunning, contemporary residence filled with unique antiques, curated artworks and spectacular views.

Flourishing careers in the oil industry meant moves from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Casper, Wyoming, for Houston and Charlotte Kauffman. “We would find a house, move in and slap up some paint,” remembers Charlotte of their frequent relocations. In 1999, the couple circled back to Fort Worth — Houston is a native, and Charlotte is originally from Oklahoma — where they bought a house yet again and settled in.

Since they retired, a search for a more permanent home eventually led them to a Westover Hills property on the Shady Oaks golf course. The incredible scenic views sealed the deal. The back terrace of the elevated half-acre lot boasts a panoramic lookout of the Trinity River valley, and a separate courtyard patio provides glimpses of the downtown skyline through the tall, leafy treetops of

surrounding neighborhoods.

Designed by Houston-based architect Roger Rasbach, they bought the home in 2005 and lived in it for a year before beginning renovations. The home was given a more overall contemporary style but kept liveable and comfortable, per Charlotte’s request.

“It is a great house; we just put their signature on it,” says interior designer Amy Walton, who headed up the revamp alongside her architect husband, Randy. They own their namesake interior design and architecture firm, Walton & Walton, and knew the Kauffmans since Amy and Charlotte were childhood friends. “We went to Camp Waldemar in Hunt, Texas, for six weeks every summer until we were 16,” adds Amy. The biggest projects were the kitchen and the master bathroom.

A cream upholstered chair in the guest room was Charlotte’s great-grandmother’s, the large desk belonged to Houston’s father and the crucifix, another piece from his mother, was handcarved by a prisoner of war in El Reno, Oklahoma. A large dramatic painting by Hector Armendariz, titled “Hoping to be Closer to Heaven,” is Houston’s absolute favorite.

Both Charlotte and Houston adore Argentinian artist Hector Armendariz, who paints dynamic images that blend symbolic representation with classic expression.

His poignant piece titled “Sonata en un Mundo Feliz” hangs above their living room sofa.

Completely outdated, Amy incorporated textured finishes into the latter, such as Ann Sacks French beige limestone floors and vanities, custom glass mosaic matchstick wall tile and linen-wrapped cabinets and drawers finished with a cream-colored lacquer. “We had to install the vanities; fit the doors and drawers; then remove them all; ship to Harrison-Van Horn, who wrapped and lacquered many coats, before shipping them back for install and mounting the finish hardware,” Amy says of the lengthy process.

During the redesign, the Kauffmans became accustomed to having various people in their home working — some longer than others. British faux painter Trevor Jones spent four months completing the finish on the walls in the powder bath off the hallway. Amy had commissioned him to create a glossy Venetian plaster in a strong Chinese gold hue for the walls. But the product, made from marble

dust, requires a time-consuming amount of hand-burnishing with a putty knife to achieve its full luster. “None of us knew what he was doing in there all that time, but it was beautiful when he emerged,” recalls Amy. “I am sure Houston and Charlotte feared he had taken up permanent residence.”

Once the reno was complete, the couple curated and displayed their heirloom pieces and beloved artwork throughout, including Charlotte’s prized Peter Heard watercolor she keeps in their office.

The results were a Kauffman-bespoke home that was absolutely picture-perfect.

The kitchen was originally very French country, and Amy and Randy reworked it completely, giving it “all the essentials of a classic New Mexico kitchen,” says Amy. “I felt right at home putting that room together since Randy and I lived out there for 20 years before moving to Fort Worth.” Pine vigas and plank decking on the ceiling blend seamlessly with the distressed, stained cypress wood cabinets. The countertops are first-generation engineered stone. The existing fireplace was raised and relaid with the original brick.

Charlotte loves blue as did her grandmother, so when she laid eyes on the fabric they used for the drapes in the guest room, it became the inspiration for the whole space.

The oil painting of the children in the bluebonnets was her grandmother’s.

“It reminded her of me and my two brothers,” says Charlotte fondly of the cherished piece.

Vibrant purples, pinks and greens greet you at the door of Matt and Katie Stadler’s home, a new build that exudes youthful energy and a spirited personality. Just a stone’s throw from TCU, the two-story house was designed with entertaining in mind – and to accommodate the Stadler clan, which includes William (8), Emme Cate (7), Huck (6), Millie (4 1/2), Sam the dog, Clara the cat, and Bomber the bearded dragon.

After living in the existing house on the lot for a year, the Stadlers tore everything down and reconstructed their home from the ground up with builder Doug Brooks. A classic footprint remains, including a wraparound balcony and grand banister entryway. Funky colors and a fun-loving attitude permeate the home with a fresh, in-the-moment feel.

“We knew exactly what we wanted,” explains Katie. “My eye always goes toward color. I wear a lot of color, and I would say that my personality and my husband’s personality are colorful

and so are all of our kids. I wanted lots of entertaining space and porches. We have a big family. We live hard in our house, and we live big in our house.”

Five bedrooms, three full baths, and two powder baths are just the beginning. Play spaces with pillow forts mingle with places of sanctuary, like the chic laundry room with a flat-screen TV. Copious crystal chandeliers shine and shimmer. There are oodles of hangouts: inviting living rooms, chilled-out nooks, and oversized outdoor patios. It gives the family plenty of room for parties, from children’s birthdays to black-light nights for parents.

“We throw a lot of parties. We’ll invite over five couples with all of their kids, and it doesn’t stress us out. How we built the house makes it really easy to entertain because the kids’ stuff is easy to hide. We just clean it up, and it works. Knowing how we use our space was really important for us and for Mary Lee.” Matt and Katie enlisted design help from Mary Lee Proc-

It was a treat for Katie from Matt and the kids. “If it was my choice,” Katie laughs, “I’d put crystal everywhere.” Animalprint carpet adds verve to the sweeping staircase, with a banister burnished to a soft gold sheen by Joey Lancaster (who did all of the custom painting in the house). “I love the carpet. It makes me happy every time I walk in.”

tor, who worked on their previous home. “I’m probably more traditional, and Mary Lee definitely pushed me toward a more transitional style. She would push me out of my comfort zone with modern, clean lines – things that I probably wouldn’t go to myself. And then she brings it all together.”

Katie and Mary Lee share a love of color. “There was a connection immediately,” reveals Mary Lee. “They really let me run loose with ideas. Katie wanted this home to be different. Current, but still timeless. Every room was carefully planned for what was going to happen in it. They have a very active family, and we took that into great consideration with the durability of fabrics and carpets and flooring. They trusted me completely, which was so much fun.”

From zebra wallpaper to framed finger paintings, unique touches give creative sparkle to the family home and gathering space. “We love to entertain; we really do,” Katie confides. “We feel like God has blessed us, and so we like to use our house to bless others.”

Mark and Katie bought the mirrored, aged French doors from Round Top before knowing where to put them. Their pointed arch and panels evoke the look of a church window, and indeed the room is a sanctuary of glam.

Katie’s beloved sparkle is toned down by minimalist mirror frames and sconces, which were Mary Lee’s idea. “She helped to make it a little more masculine for Matt and a little less crystal and girly for me.”

The Stadlers cleaned up the “complete jungle” backyard, leveled it, and put in a custom swimming pool. “We are in it every single day. We live out here.” Lounge chairs and artificial grass surround the rectangular pool, complete with sun shelf and fire feature. The Collective Outdoors Summer at the Lake

Quickly after leaving the city lights and driving down a few curved roads, you find this elegant gem tucked away alongside the lake.

The Summer at the Lake project encompasses the aspect of summer we all love: family. The Collective Outdoors was tasked with updating the exterior landscape to the standards of the home interior while retaining the current charm of the property.

The Collective Outdoors team used 3-D design modules to envision the project before it began to ensure the final product would be perfect. The wow factor of the project is the pool.

The team worked with Karbo Bros. Pools on the construction that includes the infinity edge, in-pool lounging, and a sit-at bar overlooking the lake.

The large pool decking

provides ample room for sitting and lounging by the pool, and the composite deck surrounding the home provides a wrap-around-porch.

The Collective Outdoors design style is showcased on this project by blending in with nature and providing a low maintenance outdoor living area. Decking materials that last, plants that do not require much maintenance, and smart irrigation to improve water-use efficiency were used. Numerous planters placed around the property provide seasonal color and interest.

“Our amazing client gave us creative freedom to design a space where she can enjoy her family and friends, and we delivered her vision,” said Dale Jackson, The Collective Outdoors owner.

Modern-Meets-Traditional Kitchen For the Modern-MeetsTraditional project, the clients wanted to modernize their 1970s kitchen, with its outdated white and green tiles. “This was a complete kitchen remodel where I was allowed to do whatever I wanted with it. It was all custom, all the way to the floor and to the studs,” said Christy Hill, CHI Designs owner and principal designer. For the design style, the husband was more traditional, and the wife was more modern. Hill was able to provide both styles, modern and traditional, which is something Hill says she sees quite often working with husbands and wives.

According to Hill, the wow factor in the project is a hidden pantry behind the cabinetry. “There was an existing walk-in pantry on which I was able to create a cabinetry

front, making that walk-in pantry completely hidden,” Hill says. The island was already there, and Hill added the table to the island, allowing more space for food prep and entertaining, the perfect place for family and friends to gather. Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery was Hill’s go-to provider for quality plumbing fixtures, lighting and appliances.

The homeowners’ styles seemed tricky to combine, but this kitchen reno sums up what it’s like to compromise. Hill’s design style is about customization and the overall aesthetic desired by a homeowner, and that was definitely achieved on the Modern-MeetsTraditional project.

Buy a bag at your local health food store and keep them on hand for recipes like this one so you can battle those long summer days.

CHIA CHERRY DESSERT CHIA-CHERRY WITH MASCARPONE Ingredients For the desserts: • 2 1/2 cups milk • 1 3/4 cups vanilla yogurt, stirred • 2 tablespoons light agave nectar • 3/4 cup black chia seeds • 4 cups fresh red cherries, pitted and halved • 2 tablespoons white sugar • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2/3 cup mascarpone cheese, chilled • 2/3 cup whipping cream, chilled • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, sifted To garnish: • edible flowers, e.g., pansies • salad cress or other micro green For the dessert: Whisk together milk, yogurt and agave nectar in a mixing bowl. Add chia seeds, whisk again, and leave to stand for 30 minutes. In the meantime, combine two-thirds of the cherries with the sugar and lemon juice in a food processor or blender.

Blend on high until smooth and puréed. Divide between four serving glasses. Cover and chill until needed. After the chia pudding has stood for 30 minutes, give it a quick stir. Spoon on top of the cherry purée in the glasses. Arrange most of the remaining cherry halves on top. Cover and chill overnight. The next day, whip mascarpone, cream and confectioners’ sugar to semi-stiff peaks in a mixing bowl.

To garnish: Spoon on top of desserts and garnish with cress, flowers and remaining cherry halves before serving.

Makes four servings.

How to Organize Your Pantry

aking your pantry from that embarrassing closet you’d never want a guest to see to a photo-ready organized space takes a lot of work. And containers, lots of containers. So, we turned to The Container Store for a step-by-step guide to organizing your shelves full of foodstuffs.

Clean It Out The first step is to remove all of the items inside — set a staging area on a dining room table.

Discard and Donate This is the perfect time for a purge. Discard out-of-date items and donate nonperishable items that you won’t realistically use to a local food bank.

Measure Your Shelves Be sure to measure the depth of your shelves as well as the space between them. This will help you determine which organizers will work in your pantry.

Line Your Shelves Line all of your pantry shelves with a heavy-duty liner that will make cleanup of any spills much easier.

Select Your Organizers Transfer pantry staples such as sugar, flour and rice into see-through canisters. This will help preserve freshness, and it will be easier to see when you’re running low on an item.

Stackable canisters will help you utilize all

of the space between pantry shelves.

Group like-items together in small bins and label the contents. For example, group containers of baking soda and baking powder in a single basket. Canned goods can quickly get “lost” on deep pantry shelves. Stacking cans one in front of the other is just not practical. You’ll forget what you’ve got stored in the back because you can’t see it. Choose a tiered shelf organizer that provides you with a full view of your canned goods. Another option is a gravity-fed can dispenser, or even a Lazy Susan.

Make Use of Your Floor The floor is a good place to store larger items such as bulk food storage containers, pet food in an airtight canister or baskets of often-used items such as onions and potatoes. Utilize the full space between the floor and your lowest shelf by choosing stacking bins or baskets.

Don’t Forget the Door If you have a door in your pantry or kitchen area, don’t neglect that often-wasted space. My Favorite Room

A Collected Kitchen t all started with an antler chandelier for Amanda and Michael Bane. The couple was on a road trip to Oklahoma when they stopped at an antique shop in Mina, Arkansas, and fell in love. “We brought it home and told our builder, we need a house for this,” says Michael Bane with a laugh. “We can’t pass an antique store,” he adds.

“Even if we’re late getting somewhere, we stop.”

It’s not surprising that the Banes have an eye for the beautiful.

Married for 38 years, they met in Kerrville while both were working for jeweler James Avery — she, a jeweler; he, an interior designer for the stores. When new careers brought them to Fort Worth, the Banes wanted a home that was a little bit Hill Country and a little bit Tuscan.

“We finally thought, ‘Let’s just build it ourselves,’” says Amanda. The result is a two-story stone home sitting on a bluff in Aledo that transports visitors to the middle of Tuscany.

Now Michael paints full time, and Amanda is in sales. But when they’re home, you’ll find them in their favorite room — the kitchen.

Thanks to Amanda’s passion for cooking and Michael’s passion for painting, it’s where their hobbies merge. “It’s where everybody gathers ... no matter how busy I am,” Amanda says.

The room is perfectly collected — a Dutch table found at the now-closed Harris Antiques serves as the island. It was a display table covered with a tablecloth, but Michael noticed the legs and started snooping underneath. “[The antique store owner] said if I’m taking all that stuff off, I had to buy it,” Michael said. “So we kind of made the purchase based off of only seeing the legs.” Amanda made it complete with a piece of hardware she found at a garage sale down the street.

The Banes’ goal for the whole house and especially this room was for nothing to appear cookie-cutter. The result — it feels perfectly collected. Pig paintings, one painted by Michael and one carved by Amanda’s father when he was 9 years old, grace a corner wall. Upper cabinets, painted in now-discontinued Behr Barn Red are made to look like an old antique store, while the bottom cabinets reflect European furniture. That’s all thanks to Michael’s brother, a cabinet maker in Snyder. A relative in Mexico found the intricate blue and rust tile that dominates a prominent wall. The tile is cleverly continued on the steps that lead to the second floor. Rugs were found at an auction. And anchoring the room from above, the chandelier that started it all.

e end this issue where we started it — outside. Outside the home of Charlotte and Houston Kauffman specifically. There are so many beautiful outdoor spaces in this home that it’s impossible to fit the images within the confines of a 10-page story. Part courtyard, part exterior hallway, this is what visitors see when first arriving to the breathtaking residence. The home was built in 1986, and though the Kauffmans resurfaced the flooring, the columns and overgrown wisteria are original. The beautifully manicured grounds are by local landscape design firm Fowlkes, Norman & Associates.

Four tall sculpture pieces by Aspen-based artist and ceramic sculptor Barbara Sorensen hang on the brick. Her art can be seen again hanging above the exterior dining table. When you have a place to hang art outside, you know you’re doing something right.
