Sure, she’s dropped some money on some of the larger pieces in her home, but only after following them on Craigslist for years and years. She has put real legwork into virtually every piece she owns. And, thanks to our 12-page feature on her home and her nearly 8,000 Instagram followers, her hidden talent for finding hidden treasures is not so secret anymore.

She Sells, She Sheds he Fort Worth Show of Antiques & Art is back for its 55th year March 2-4. As an ode to Fort Worth’s new footprint on the home re-do show map, this year’s theme is “Revive! Revamp! Renew!” One vendor true to the theme — reVAMP of San Antonio. Owners David Medford and Johnny Valdivia travel through South Texas and up and down the East Coast from New York to Florida, in search of hard-to-find vintage décor. They plan to bring a mix of midcentury modern brass and high-design furniture, as well as fun barware, lighting and art to the Fort Worth Show.

Show Director Jan Orr-Harter says shoppers can expect more textiles plus high-end and affordable vintage, antique and estate jewelry.

“We always sell engagement rings and often have a proposal at the show,” she says.

Hector Vasquez of New Braunfels, who Orr-Harter describes as one of the best industrial dealers in the country, will be at the show. “I was at a flea market in Michigan in August; at 7 a.m., someone taps my shoulder and it's Hector, who had already filled two 24-foot trucks with abandoned factory furniture from old Michigan buildings.” Occupying

one of the largest booths in the show, Vasquez will have steel counters, airplane turbine parts converted into tables and large round agricultural disks made into mirrors. “Industrial antiques are here to stay,” Orr-Harter says.

Minnesota author and founder of the popular JUNKMARKET Style, a company that helps people mix vintage finds and industrial accents into their homes, Sue Whitney will also attend the show and sign copies of her new book, Junk Beautiful: Furniture ReFreshed.

Whitney will offer demonstrations on how to rehab vintage furniture in a way that adds to the value and function, plus share a sneak peek of her upcoming book, JUNK Beautiful: She Sheds. A “she shed” is Whitney’s female version of a man cave. She calls it “a place to get away to, without actually going away.” A model “she shed” will be constructed and offered for sale by Round Top exhibitor Liz Collins of Haute Nest.

Hey, Mrs. Wilson Popular textile designer Caitlin Wilson opened a Dallas showroom on Henderson Avenue in December. The store, named Caitlin Wilson Design Shop, is stocked with Wilson’s colorful textile designs, whimsical wallpapers and antiqueinspired rugs. It’s Wilson’s second bricks-and-mortar location — the first opened in her hometown of San Francisco. The interior designer launched her career in 2007 and has since gone on to design spaces all over

the world. Her aesthetic leans on mixing bright colors with bold patterns.

The 4,200-square-foot space is a mix of a showroom, boutique, floral shop and work space. Wilson moved her business and entire family from Portland to Dallas late last year. Swedish furniture retail has inched just a little bit closer to Fort Worth. A fourth Fort Worth-Dallas location swung open the doors on a 290,000-squarefoot store in Grand Prairie in December.

It marks Tarrant County’s first IKEA. But it won’t be the last. An equally massive Fort Worth store will open 10 miles north of downtown on 27 acres at the southwest corner of Interstate 35 West and North Tarrant Parkway. Target, Like Now On Feb. 15 Target began offering same-day delivery to Fort Worth homes, thanks to its December acquisition of Shipt. While the service (which requires a $99 Shipt membership) mostly concentrates on grocery items (55,000 of them to be exact), it also delivers home staples and electronics. And, the retailer hopes to expand same-day delivery service for all product categories in the store next year — think cheap sofas and throw pillows practically on demand.

Purple Reign urely there was a collective Fort Worth rejoice when PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet was announced as the Pantone 2018 Color of the Year in January. No, it’s not an exact match to Horned Frog purple (which is Pantone PMS 268), but the hue, with the ideal amount of blue, comes pretty darn close.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, describes it as “a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.”

The Pantone team also addressed Ultra Violet’s influence on home décor, suggesting that it can transform a room and make a statement in any space — from traditional and elegant to unexpectedly bold.

FLANN HARRIS AND TIFFANY TAYLOR SCOUT DESIGN STUDIO cout Design Studio is anchored in the Dallas Design District, but finds from the popular spot land in many Fort Worth homes. The 15,000-square-foot showroom is stocked with unique vintage furniture and décor, plus custom Scout label creations — think perfect condition lucite and velvet chairs alongside Ming coffee tables just begging for a fresh coat of lacquer (yup, they do that too). Tiffany Taylor turned her treasure-hunting talent into a store in October 2011, and one year later, her childhood friend Flann Harris packed up his station wagon and joined her. “Best decision I ever made,” he says.

We chatted with the duo behind the eclectic establishment to find out how they do it all and what changes they have in store for 2018.

What’s the coolest piece y’all have ever found? TT: We once found a bed made out of a 1968 Thunderbird. It was the coolest thing, and we drove miles to rescue it. It lived with us for a while, and when the right buyer came along, we were sad to see it go. FH: For me, I will always remember a Tack Shop sign found amidst a pile of rubble. It looked like total garbage, but it was massive and so cool. After a small restoration effort, it was brought back to life and now lives permanently in a high-end retail space in Dallas.

I hear you’re transitioning from curators of vintage items to exclusively selling Scout label items. TT: The goal was always to create our own designs, and as the business grew, we needed ways to supplement our inventory. Our travels for vintage inventory introduced us to a network of artisans who could help bring our own designs to life. We started with a few chairs and then moved into lighting, case goods and décor. We love vintage and finding those truly unique pieces, so it will always be in the mix to some extent.

What was the first Scout label piece created? TT: Our Mayes Swivel

Chair. We were selling vintage swivels like crazy and couldn’t keep up with demand.

We joked that we were the swivel capital of the world during that time because so many came and went. We eventually decided to create our own chair, and now it’s one of our best sellers.

In August 2017 y’all introduced a second space in the Design District that’s only open on Saturdays.

Tell us more. TT: The SCOUTLET serves as our “Scratch and Dent” or “Seconds” area for returned Scout Label inventory. We also have some clearance vintage projects as well as one-of-a-kind concept pieces that never made it to production.

How would you describe the Scout style? TT: Our slogan is “We’re not for everyone. Neither are you.” It’s true; we have a penchant for mixing anything and everything and an aversion to following the rules. We love mixing sleek acrylic with rich acacia wood or neon lights with Louis XIV chairs. We believe a home should be made up of things that you love, and with that, beauty is inevitable. FH: That’s what I love about the Scout style and vision. It’s unconventional. It’s unexpected. It’s not

worried about keeping up with the Joneses or the Kardashians or anybody else ... it’s about doing your own thing and just going for it!

What’s the one piece that every room needs? TT: Something curious.

We love items of intrigue that invoke a conversation. I have a 6-foot tall, carved mermaid in my dining room, and people always want to know her story.

Any tips for vintage treasure hunting? TT: We love estate sales and thrift shops, but for a true treasure hunt, go to Round Top. We’re fortunate to have one of the best antique shows in the world right here in Texas.

How do your styles differ? TT: I’m more of a hoarder. When we travel, I’m always buying art and handicrafts, whereas Flann has much more restraint. My husband probably wishes I would take some notes from him on this topic. FH: I’m all about form and function. If it doesn’t serve a purpose, it’s hard for me to have it take up real estate in my life. That being said, I love the eccentric and eclectic, particularly when curated by my partner-in-crime Tiffany.

Any plans for a Fort Worth location in your future? TT: We love Fort Worth, but our focus now is on e-commerce and not more brick-and-mortar. Maybe if we could be next to Joe T’s though? FH: For sure. Why not just inside of Joe T’s? There's plenty of space.

harlie Price is a force to be reckoned with. The handsome, tattooed, larger-than-life hair savant — who is responsible for styling the likes of Gigi Hadid, Charlize Theron and a pack of Dallas bloggers — currently has two wildly successful salons, and a third set to open in Dallas later this year. That means more work for longtime friend Jessica McIntyre, owner of Jessica McIntyre Interiors, who designs all of his spaces, including the Fort Worth location on Foch Street that opened in late 2016.

After interviewing some of the most prominent designers in Dallas, Price was cut-and-dry in explaining why he elected to work with Fort Worth’s McIntyre. “So many designers ‘overdesign’ … I am simple, clean, and I want my space to speak of me, not what my client or guest expects. Jessica blew me away from the moment we started working together,” he says.

“Charlie’s personal style is a reflection of how he wants surroundings to look and feel. He is so full of life and has a certain aesthetic that is evident as soon as you meet him. I’d describe it as creative, edgy, comfortable, with a bit of rock star,” McIntyre says.

When Charlie approaches the design of his salons, he comes armed with inspiration from his incessant globe trekking and beaucoups of illustrative visuals on how he’d like to transform the space, including preferred materials and styles. He says his Fort

Worth location, which previously housed another salon, was all about creating a big-city loft feel. The 2,100-square-foot salon incorporates soaring ceilings, natural light, an open floor plan and communal seating.

McIntyre says, “The first thing we did was gut it. Nothing from the previous space remained. We painted everything white, enlarged the windows and added skylights.”

Price felt it was important that all of the stylists work in the same open area. All colorists work at a large concrete table in the middle of the space “with no mirrors to mind the sludge being applied to their hair,” Price says. As a self-proclaimed fragrance connoisseur, Price imports Coqui Coqui room diffusers from Tulum, Mexico, and makes them available for purchase to all of his guests. They expertly dominate a glass table near the entry.

Boasting an organic, laid-back ambiance, Charlie + Co. balances natural materials and subtle glamour. McIntyre says that Price’s salons feel simple and clean; however, every detail is carefully planned and orchestrated. “In his Fort Worth space, I love the excess mortar seeping from the white brick walls. It’s a touch

that makes the salon feel as though it has been there forever,” she says. It works perfectly with gray porcelain floor tiles laid stack bond style.

McIntyre sourced the modern lighting from LightSpek in Dallas. The square LED panel is optimal lighting for the salon because it doesn’t cast shadows and shows accurate color as it’s applied to clients’ hair.

“I gave him complete artistic freedom for the pieces in the salon,” Price says. It’s a decision he says he made without McIntyre’s blessing.

“I have to do some stuff behind her back,” he jokes. But McIntyre was involved with the art on the back wall of the salon, featuring the message “Another Day in Paradise” emblazoned in neon. It’s a phrase that Price is notorious for saying whenever his staff or clients ask him how his day is going.

Before opening his first namesake salon, Hair by Charlie, in the Dallas Design District, Price spent seven years in Manhattan styling for editorial shoots and for the runway at New York Fashion Week. Yet he has remained relaxed, unconventional and unpretentious, making him the go-to guy for low-maintenance hair color and effortless waves. “Making every woman look and feel her best is what makes me tick,” Price says.

Part of that experience is encouraging his clients to ditch their worries at the door and use their time in the salon to unwind.

“When my guests come to an appointment, I want them to feel like they are coming to a friend’s house.”

The Art of Acquisition In a quiet Aledo neighborhood, New Jersey transplant Rosie Case seamlessly blends the past with present in a stunning, sculpturally eclectic home.

Rosie Case’s creative procurement game is strong.

Call it a talent for unearthing hidden gems or a passion for newly found things; there’s no denying the New Jersey native has an originative propensity for filling her home with the desires of her heart. Old, eclectic, impulsive, vintage, unusual — all standard words when it comes to defining the Case interior. And that’s just the way Rosie likes it.

Formerly a copywriter at Vogue in New York, Rosie took up freelance copywriting and editorial work after she met her husband, Jon, and moved to the Lone Star State (of which she’s grown quite fond).

Jon is an Army pilot and often rises early, so when schedules allow, the couple savors their morning brew together — preferably in their favorite spot — a comfy curved cream settee in the parlor. Rosie scored the ’80s find from Home Interior Consignments in George-

town near Austin — the Case’s first post in Texas where they rented a home for three years. On sleepy Saturday mornings, Rosie and Jon settle into the sofa to sip their Texas Pecan coffee, a favorite from Central Market, while also drinking in the view. The parlor connects via an arched opening into the living room, where a large set of windows looks out over the backyard. Beyond the patio space and ongoing pool installation, there’s a thick grove of trees and expansive vistas — one of their favorite things about the Aledo home.

But it wasn’t all pretty at the start. “It was like a technicolor dream house,” says Rosie of the foreclosure’s original state when they purchased it in 2014. The first home ownership for the family of four — daughter Rosie is 5 and their son, Jasper, is 9 — the 5,000-square-foot space had closed-off rooms, outdated fixtures and too-bold color combos, including black paint and mirrored

walls. “There were green rooms, yellows rooms, murals on the wall. The carpet was lumpy,” Rosie said.

So the walls were painted Clear Moon by Behr, and all the first-level flooring was replaced with wood-grain porcelain tile in Tabula Cappuccino from Floor and Decor. Squared-off doorways were rounded into soft arches, mimicking the curved staircase and its rounded landing upstairs, for a modernized appeal.

Transforming a forlorn foreclosure built in 1995 into their forever home was completely indicative of her aptitude to give old things renewed purpose. But there’s no formula, no pattern and no rules. “I don’t care about era at all. If I like the shape of something, I’ll buy it,” she says. “With a few exceptions, everything you see is Craigslist, thrifted, antique malls and then peppered with doses of HomeGoods, T.J. Maxx. I’ll shop anywhere.”

Turns out that shopping “anywhere,” when done with a keen eye, can result in remarkable finds, like a pair of pencil reed pod chairs from Furniture Buy Consignment on Hulen Street in Fort Worth. They sit across from the parlor’s cream sofa, separated by a heavy travertine coffee table. A hot air balloon sculpture sits atop it, a piece Rosie loved at first sight from Cooper Street Antique Mall in Arlington.

“I’m probably in thrift shops about five times a week, which is the key to finding things,” she says. Those discoveries also include a vintage entry table from The Eclectic Den in Dallas (to which she added a custom-made acrylic top) and a waterfall bench in the kitchen from Shop Vintage Dallas. Another waterfall bench sits below a mirror in the entry. “A broken clock is right twice a day, and it’s the same thing for thrift shops. Even a bad one will have something good.”

Though her foraging expeditions and methods are multifarious, the results play nicely — even if Rosie admits she’s not afraid to force pieces to live together. A vintage C. Jere bird sculpture from eBay shares parlor wall space with a Nate Berkus for Target gilded mirror and an ink and watercolor framed drawing by Canadian artist Mar-

cel Dzama. Opposite, two oversized canvas paintings — they hang above a lovely credenza she scored on eBay — tout Rosie’s clever skill with a brush. It’s her own inspired version of artwork she loved but couldn’t quite obtain. “When I was finished with them, I was actually pleased because I can be hard on myself,” Rosie says of the canvas pair. “I was even more impressed that I hung them properly!”

The thrifting maven keeps the home’s overall look unified with light, neutral tones throughout. Another curvy cream sofa, this one sourced by New Jersey-based vintage dealer Rafael Contreras of The Beau Ideal (@thebeauideal), anchors the living room. A sheepskin rug from Costco and a curvaceous coffee table Rosie snagged on Craigslist add a cozy element, while artistic touches abound like an elongated acrobat sculpture from HomeGoods atop a large brass pedestal from Azle Antique Mall. It’s all airy and bright without being monotonous, bathed in natural light by that wall of windows.

A wide archway opens into the kitchen, where more light pours in by way of another set of oversized windows. The room’s magnum opus is a brass-based table and sculpture-esque chairs, both found separately on Craigslist. “They always get a lot of attention,”

adds Rosie. The centerpieces are crane lawn ornaments, naturally, that she picked up at T.J. Maxx then painted white. And a very large triangular plywood mirror by local carpenter Derek Reyna casually leans against the wall, adding a dose of dimension. “I want to enjoy our surroundings. It’s just more fun to look around and see things you like than to keep saying, ‘Oh someday, someday.’”

The kitchen is, arguably, the very reason that Rosie’s love affair with sculpturally inclined, neutral-toned design came to exist on social media. The makeover prompted her to join Instagram to share the process online, which began in the spring of 2015, and she soon discovered fellow design-savvy Insta-individuals like Angela Chrusciaki Blehm (@angelachrusciakiblehm), Erin Williamson Design (@sterinwilliamson) and Atlantis Home (@atlantishome).

Rosie and Jon had the existing kitchen cabinets painted white and the walls in Sherwin William’s Alabaster. The counters were reconfigured to a more open arrangement and cloaked in a marbleesque granite top. A built-in bench was removed to expand the walk-in pantry as well. Rosie kept the fixtures sleek and simple, with a pair of pendant lights from Overstock and white barstools from Wayfair.

A walk-through butler’s pantry connects to the dining room. The eye is drawn to the Anewall “Shaded Landscape” mural that’s accentuated by the chandelier — one of the home’s few original things Rosie kept. A mirrored Ello buffet from eBay holds court against the mural, bedecked with sunburst mirrors from HomeGoods.

recovered in a faux croc vinyl), and the table is from Craigslist.

Though neutrals reign supreme, there are a few pops of color, found mostly in the bedrooms. The downstairs master, sheathed in more abundant rays of sunlight, is a large space with equally substantial pieces, like a vintage Henredon canopy bed from Craigslist. And Rosie stalked the oddly shaped black chaises on eBay for years before casting the winning bid. A beautiful Lane brutalist dresser, part of a set Rosie purchased from a dealer in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, years ago, holds many small treasures. There’s also a Vladimir Kagan for Room and Board sofa from Chairish that Jon frequents. “He is unbelievably patient with my furniture choices. Because, I’ll tell you what, that sofa is not comfortable,” laughs Rosie.

Long ago, Jon became accustomed to Rosie’s impulsive decorating and honed-in style. It didn’t surprise him in the least to walk by one day and see his wife of nearly 12 years hand painting a mural on their current bedroom wall. “He just lets me do what I want, and it’s so freeing.”

Meanwhile, Rosie admits she might have to make peace with a few requested additions to her children’s sweet spaces as they get older. The clouded mural wallpaper from Anewall in little Rosie’s bedroom perfectly matches her beautiful white canopy bed. A tall Lane brutalist dresser from Rosie’s set resides nearby, as does an Italian garden snail stool from a local estate sale and a charming bench from HomeGoods.

Jasper’s room is a study in all things boy, with a fun-loving football player motif — a Goodwill find — above his log bed from eBay and a metal dog sculpture sourced from T.J. Maxx.

The kids also enjoy lounging on the comfy Barrett sofa by Palliser in the upstairs TV room and often prop their feet on the “Chiclet table” as Rosie dubbed it (it’s indeed shaped like a Chiclet), a piece her parents shipped to her from her childhood home.

There’s not a room in the house that’s short on visual interest, and there’s a gratifying amount of unique wares here. A pink lips chair from Goodwill puckers up in one corner while tortoiseshell floor lamps from Montgomery Antique Mall bookend a console table hovering over a brassy gold Sarreid chest from Craigslist.

A large white-and-black artwork, another Rosie original, delivers a graphic punch. And neatly tucked beneath a table backing one side of the sofa is a pair of short, white tooth stools that Rosie ordered from a dental supply company on a whim.

With no end to her inventive ways, Rosie “somewhat aspires” to design professionally, exuding a clear passion for creating

interiors that elicit joy and happiness. Though since she’s not classically trained as an interior designer, Rosie wonders how she’ll interpret the style of others. For instance, she worries about the possibility of a client that requests everything in red — a color to which Rosie maintains a strong aversion. But arguably, it’s these very factors that make her such an asset to any space waiting to be infused with something special.

For now, however, Rosie is excited to source pieces for her newly opened booth at The Historic Camp Bowie Mercantile in Fort Worth. Plus there’s always another project on the docket at home.

The pool needs to be finished; the exterior of the home painted; and the guest room and bathrooms are soon to be revamped. But in between perfecting her space one room at time, Rosie continually enjoys the happiness that her surroundings bring and slow Saturday morning coffee sessions.

The 2017 Fort Worth HOME Design Awards were a success. Twenty-two finalists and design enthusiasts packed into the new Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom on Dec. 7 inside The Shops at Clearfork for the big reveal of award winners. The evening was filled with a celebration of local talent, wild patterns, passionate projects and expertly designed spaces.

(1) BEST WHOLE HOME DESIGN A Fresh and Rustic Contemporary Urbanology Designs

Every room inside this rustic contemporary 6,500-square-foot house in Flower Mound is well designed without being pretentious and relaxed without looking undone. That’s thanks to the casual, luxe design style of the homeowners, who had tired of their previous heavy furniture and dark tones. “They literally gave a bunch of things away to friends and just started over,” said Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs. That gave Ginger the chance to play with scale, as she did with statementmaking fixtures like the three large metal pendants in the living room. The design wowed the judges. “There’s a nice study in forms here — from the concrete fireplace

Cheryl Bean of B Smart Builders, who designed the room to align with the adjacent open dining space, praised her client’s great eye.

“There’s a ton of sophisticated, modern personality in this pretty standard footprint. I like how the materials are varied but are cohesive together.” Design Awards judge Kelly Keegan summed up the beauty of this remodeled kitchen by Marta Rozanich of Konstruckio Studio.

Rozanich overcame the challenge of this small galley kitchen when she discovered a cavity of unused space between a fireplace on the other side of the kitchen and the kitchen wall. The resulting space, with an island, quartz countertops and porcelain stone tile flooring, is a model of both form and function.

(6) BEST MASTER BEDROOM Playing with Patterns Kay Genua Designs

Nothing makes a bedroom cozier than multiple fabrics and patterns. Such was the strategy of Kay Genua of Kay Genua Designs when she designed the master bedroom in this Ridglea-area home.

light blue wall — chosen by Genua to offset the dark hues and heavy antiques.

Design Awards judge Annette Mallard said the space “looks like a luxury suite at a B&B.” Multiple patterns, Chippendale chairs, a skirted side table and bespoke furniture are made cohesive by a colorful Feizy rug.

(7) BEST OUTDOOR SPACE A Hill Country-Inspired Resort Heritage Design Studio

“This gorgeous outdoor escape” as Design Awards judge Kelly Keegan calls it, was designed for a family who knew exactly what they wanted. “They were relocating from London and looking for Texas Hill Country inspiration but with a transitional tone,” says designer Angela Hough, one part of the husband-and-wife Heritage Design Studio team. So the duo stuck to materials like travertine tiles, Austin chalk, concrete and teak. The resulting spaces in this expansive outdoor resort are calm, rustic and relaxing.

Kay Genua Kay Genua opened her namesake firm in 2002.

Before her career in interior design, Kay worked in fashion for Bloomingdales in both New York City and Dallas. She has a knack for mixing heirloom antiques and new bespoke furnishings, as well as a keen ability to mix color and pattern when working with fabrics.

In addition to residences in the Fort Worth-Dallas area, Kay has designed homes in Boston, Houston, Marble Falls, Port Aransas, Beaver Creek, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Seattle.

Chris Hough After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Chris Hough began apprenticing with noted architects in the Highland Park and University Park areas in Dallas.

His passion for historically inspired homes led him to study the archetypes of European and American Architecture of the late 1800s and early 1900s. It’s that knowledge and love of art that compelled him to launch Heritage Design Studio in 2000.

Marta Rozanich Marta Rozanich received a Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University and a Master of Architecture from Arizona State University. She’s a registered architect with more than 11 years of experience designing custom residential homes, multi-family and speculative housing, as well as boutique commercial and hospitality projects. Her firm, Konstruckio Studio, is a full-service architecture and interior design firm that specializes in environmental awareness and custom solutions.

(8) BEST SPECIALTY ROOM A Sophisticated Cabana KL Milam Interior Design

The winner of best specialty room erases all ideas of pool cabanas with striped towels and red accents. Kim Milam took a 22-by-22-foot stamped concrete slab and three sets of French doors and created this unexpected cabana that houses a full kitchen, TV area and dining table that seats six. A 16-foot ceiling and Oly Studio wood light fixture add another level of elegance in this award-winning space.

The Six Elements of the Perfect Picnic

The March issue of our mother publication Fort Worth Magazine reminds us all to get outside. Wild Fort Worth outlines more than 20 trails and outdoor activities for the spring season. But, if you’re going to be on the go, you’ll need to stay nourished and hydrated. Don’t just grab for a boring protein bar. Do it right with tips for packing a picnic from chef Jim Dunleavy, food and beverage director of Eatzi’s Market & Bakery. If you needed an excuse to keep some fried chicken on hand, he’s your man.

BREADS

The biggest factor to consider when choosing bread for a picnic is time. Bread will get soggy and spoil a meal if sandwiches are made long before it’s time to eat. On the other hand, you don’t want to waste time making them when you’re supposed to be enjoying nature. The answer lies in choosing the right bread. Pick a coarser bread like Eatzi’s Jewish rye, a seeded whole wheat or a multigrain loaf. They will hold up better than a typical slice of white bread while you’re traveling. If you don’t like coarse bread, skip the sandwiches and just do cheese or antipasto with a French baguette; tear off what you want when you’re ready to eat.

Stick to vinegar-based dressings. Anything dressed with a vinegar base keeps well in warm weather, like a diced cucumber and tomato salad.

Meats

Most dry salamis, like soppressata, work very well in a picnic basket, as the best flavor comes out at room temperature. Slice it thin for a sandwich or bring along small stick salami and cut when you are ready to eat. Also, don’t be afraid to pack cold fried chicken. It’s a picnic classic for a reason; refrigerating the chicken after cooking causes the breading to stick better, so you get all the breading and meat in one bite. If you’re going on a hike longer than two hours, add an ice pack to be safe.

BEVERAGES

For warm weather picnics, a good sparkling wine or a sweeter white like pinot grigio are great choices for sipping outdoors. If beer is more your taste, try a lighter beer with fruit or citrus notes. You can still get creative if you’re avoiding alcohol — try DRY Soda as it’s light, refreshing and comes in a range of more sophisticated flavors like cucumber, Fuji apple and vanilla.

Turn to individual portion desserts for practical picnic items. When picking picnic desserts, it’s important to keep temperature in mind as chocolate and mousse-based desserts do not hold up well when it’s warm. Custard and creams can present food safety issues if they are not kept cold enough. Stick with individually portioned desserts like cupcakes, which are a good option as everyone can choose their favorite flavor. Eatzi’s also has Lemon Blueberry and Raspberry Pistachio Fruit Tarts.

The No-Fuss Guide to a Kitchen Herb Garden

hile the idea of gardening can seem daunting to some, caring for a plant is actually a great way to relieve stress — but gardening comes in many forms, including indoor gardening. A simple kitchen herb garden is a great way to reap both the physical and mental health benefits of gardening.

With so many varieties of herbs, you can add a pop of fresh flavor and color to any dish you cook at home. Plus, it’s almost effortless to grow herbs inside with a few materials and easy-to-follow steps. All you need is a medium-sized pot or a set of small pots (depending on the counter space in your kitchen), soil, organic fertilizer and your favorite herbs.

Shopping: When shopping for herbs, make sure you examine the leaves of the plants for any marks of possible disease or pests. Telltale signs include damage like holes or discoloration on the leaves or stems.

If space is limited in your kitchen, look for herbs that have the same environmental needs because they can be grouped into one pot. For example, the Italian trio — oregano, parsley and thyme — all enjoy the sun, so they can be planted together and set by a window to grow. Also keep in mind the types of herbs that are especially easy to grow inside, such as chives, sage, mint and

Planting: When you get your herbs home, it’s quick and easy to plant them. Make sure your pot has a small hole at the bottom to allow for drainage and place it on a decorative plate or tray to catch excess moisture from watering. Fill the pot with a mix of soil and organic fertilizer, leaving a few inches of space at the top. Then, create a hole in the soil, gently loosen the herb and its root ball from its original container, place it in the pot and pack the root ball with soil. If you’re planting multiple plants in the same pot, space them at least two inches apart so the roots have room to grow.

Maintaining: Once planted, care for your herb garden regularly by watering when the soil feels dry to the touch. As a general rule of thumb, herbs will grow best if kept in natural light by a window. When you get ready to cook a delicious recipe using herbs, cut the leaves and stems you want to use from the top, not the bottom. Be careful not to prune too much of one herb at once, as it could stall its growth over time.

A Fearless Office Space

ife on Ladera Court is pretty good for Stacey Connor.

The local blogger lives with her family of four on a cul-de-sac overlooking the La Cantera at Team Ranch development in Benbrook. They completed building the five-bedroom French country home with NH Southern Development a little over a year ago.

Some homeowners walk away from builds and renovation projects with emotional battle wounds. Not the Connors.

“It was so fun,” she says. “We pretty much designed the floorplan ourselves and used a lot of Pinterest inspiration. I would truly do it all over again.” She has been methodically furnishing and decorating each room of the home since.

Stacey chronicles that journey, plus her journey in fashion, beauty and style on her blog, Life on Ladera (lifeonladera.com). Connor’s office, a gem of a room behind French doors just off the front entry of the home, is her in-home headquarters for all things blogging. And, it’s her favorite. “Sometimes I try to lock myself in there and hide from my kids,” she says with a laugh, referring to daughter Charlotte, 2, and son Hugh, 1. Her home and the room serve as the muse for lifeonladera. com. “When your job and hobby are creative, it’s important that your space be too,” she says.

The colorful space is partly thanks to Tina McMackin and Alyson French of Arrange: Stage with Style. The local home-staging service doesn’t usually take on interior design projects for homes that aren’t on the market, but they made a special exception for Stacey. They were just the duo to blend her love for all design styles. “One of the problems is, I love modern, French country, traditional. I wanted to figure out

how to make all of those styles work and go together,” Stacey says.

Originally meant to be Connor’s husband’s office, the room started with navy grass cloth wallpaper, built-ins and coffered ceilings. “When we looked at paint samples of navy, it was way too dark, so we went with the grass cloth texture, Connor says. “I loved it so much that we did grass cloth in two other rooms.”

She knew her office would be the one room in her house that she could really express herself with items like the leopard Suzanne Kasler rug from Williams Sonoma. “It was going to be mine, so I could have fun with color, animal prints and different textures,” she says. “I am not afraid of color, and I can be eclectic.”

The room’s showpiece is a pink Lee Industries chair Connor had custom made through Simple Things Furniture — the furniture and antiques showroom more often known for serene settings and neutral tones. It sits behind Connor’s favorite piece in the room, a sprawling brass rams head desk from Again and Again in Dallas. The pink from the chair is strategically repeated in a vintage bench covered in a Kilim Rug, sitting below an abstract piece of art titled “Delicate Declarations”

by Carly Allen-Martin, currently on loan from ArtSpace111. The other piece of art in the room is by Jeff Schaub — it’s a woman struggling to carry a pile of Hermès shopping boxes. Tina and Alyson said they saw it and immediately thought of Stacey.

Outside the office, other rooms in the home are less eclectic, more soothing, more family-friendly. Stacey plans to share those spaces on her blog when they’re ready. But for now, the office is complete. And it’s just for Stacey.

Keys to a View o, this is not the Hollywood Hills. This is one room of a home in North Arlington, sitting on a hill overlooking the West Fork of the Trinity River. This home was originally built in 2003 and underwent an extensive remodel when the current homeowners took over the property.

There’s a lot to love. Contemporary design. A gated entrance. A movie room. But, it’s a glassenclosed piano room that touts some of the best views from the 10,000-square-foot home. Outside, a lap pool flows beneath the room.
