By Design ach time we begin to plan the pages of this magazine, we make it a goal to bring you various design viewpoints. And, I have to say, this time we nailed it. Starting with our first feature — a jewel box of a house in the heart of Monticello. Color, pattern and texture bounce off every wall. Lacquer? Yes. Dramatic light fixtures? You guessed it. Chickens? Why not. Then we take a long drive out to a sprawling and serene Aledo home surrounded by land, grass, views and a to-die-for pool. Neutral tones? All around. Teak wood? Of course. White on white? Yes, please. A cat? You bet. These homes are the yin and yang of design. And as a Gemini, it’s a dream. Selfish, I know. But in a perfect world, wouldn’t we all have two homes? One for each of our personalities. Actually, some of us might need more than two. The rest of the pages of this magazine can fulfill those other personalities and design viewpoints, thanks to themes

threaded throughout like Hermes orange, vintage finds and custom homes. We also bring you our first Builder’s Guide — a comprehensive list of the Builder, Associate and Affiliate Firms from the Greater Fort Worth Builders Association, just in case this issue has you itching for a new home or project. I’m off to take on a new project of my own: motherhood. As I mentioned in my parting letter in the August issue of Fort Worth Magazine, for the last two years I’ve been trying to balance between motherhood and editorhood, and the scales finally tipped in one direction. But I can honestly say that creating this magazine has been my favorite part of my career. I’m officially turning over the reins of Fort Worth HOME to the new Fort Worth Magazine executive editor Brian Kendall. My journalism career is going on hiatus for a bit, but I will remain a fan of these pages, ogling this publication from the other side.

Jenny B. Davis is a Fort Worth-based freelance writer. She and her family live in a midcentury modern home, where she’s re-created a vintage habitat filled with chrome and shag from the ’60s and ’70s — and a lot of orange and brown. Her latest home furnishing acquisition is a custom shadow box coffee table sized to show off the LEGO Millennium Falcon, which soon will become the centerpiece of the Star Wars-themed, retro-fabulous ’70s family room. Her favorite thing in her home is her tabletop video game machine, loaded with Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga and Frogger. Turn to page 46 to read about her visit to a Cape Cod-style home on Fort Worth’s west side, marked by vibrant colors and bold patterns woven together with elegance and sophistication.

Amber Bell balances a “fun-filled life” as a writer and mom (to quadruplets!), having extensive experience writing about travel, weddings and lifestyle. Turn to page 60 as she tours the home of the designer herself — Irsaneous Interiors’ Katie Irsaneous, who traded her New York digs for a minimalist yet inviting space in Texas.

Gifted Artists ew lifestyle shop, Gifted, opened in The Foundry District in July. Owner Esther Miller keeps the 800-square-foot store stocked with finds from brands you won’t find in other local shops. Miller says she opened the store because she craved a local spot where she could shop indie designers but found that there were none. She spent more than 12 years in the fashion industry, working with major international brands before branching out on her own to launch Gifted. Both in-store and online shoppers can find items like stack-

able platform bowls from Good Thing, a New York-based home goods company; birch wood mini plant stands from Savvie Studio in Denton; and abstract art from Iowa-based letterpress company Moglea. Our favorite finds — the Apolis X Fort Worth tote bag and table tile coasters from Areaware. Shop the Southwest Home décor and furnishings store The Blue Door opened in July in the former Sally’s Flower Shoppe building on Camp Bowie Boulevard. The Sally’s sign remains, but gone is the bright pink facade. The new exterior reflects the new findings inside — Southwesterninspired home goods sourced by owner and local interior designer Jericka Childress.

Jericka says she opened the store with her husband, Mark, after seeing a void in the market for her aesthetic — a modern eclectic and transitional style. The building still has a flare for the bright, thanks to the blue front door made from 80-yearold barn wood and hand-forged wrought iron hardware. Blue doors — a signature of New Mexico homes — are thought

The Eclectic Den The first thing this husband-and-wife team posted for sale on their Instagram account in May 2017 was a vintage teak bookcase by Nathan (a UK furniture company founded in 1916). hen brands like Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta and Jeremy Scott debuted orange duds on the fall/winter 2018 New York Fashion Week runways in February, it confirmed Pantone Color Institute’s prediction that Russet Orange would be a major player in fall trends. The interiors world has always been fond of the hue, thanks in part to Hermès’ own signature orange — a slightly punchier tone of the shade. ither you know it or you don’t – “30A.” That stretch of the Emerald Coast named for the two-lane highway that runs through scenic, beachy towns in northwest Florida. North Texans flock to the region in the summer months and over spring break, thanks to quick and easy flights, an abundance of vacation rentals and family-friendly vibes all around. Most of the towns are modeled after developer Robert Davis’ idea of New Urbanism — an approach to building compact, walkable, very usable, self-sustaining cities. His creation, Seaside, was one of the first towns to be developed this way. So idyllic, it was where “The Truman Show” was filmed. Sure, some people might find the picture-perfect scene a little Utopian — but if you’re an architect or interiors enthusiast, you’re sure to find inspiration everywhere. EMILY AND BOBBY LYNGE Owners of Grow Plant Shop by Kendall Louis

mily and Bobby Lynge are the embodiment of the new, funkier, I’ll say it … younger Fort Worth. Emily, 26, a former manager at Beehive clothing boutique, and Bobby, 27, a former guitarist for the Christian metalcore band Fit for a King, decided to open Grow Plant Shop after entrenching themselves in the landscaping of their first home purchase. “We started landscaping when we bought our house over in Ryan Place, and it never stopped. I just wanted to keep going,” said Bobby. The irony of a nursery, a store that’s all about planting roots, located inside of an Airstream trailer, a structure that’s transient by nature, is not lost on this writer. Nor is the fact that millennials probably adore that irony and the photo-ready Airstream that the couple bought off of Craigslist. After a remodel, the Airstream took up residence on a grassy lot next door to La Zona and formally opened in July. And, well, let’s just say Instagram went wild. But Grow is more than just a social media magnet — these owners know their stuff too. The first time I arrive at Grow, Bobby is answering 10-plus minutes worth of questions lobbed at him by a well-dressed, twenty-something customer about the plant she just purchased, as well as plants she already has at home. And then we swooped in with more questions. The pink tile inside the airstream has been a hit. You have to tell us more about it. The floor was so hard! The vision was definitely Emily’s. It’s called Nola Pink, and we got it from Riad Tile in Southlake. She showed it to me, and I was like no brainer. The contrast from the white to the green to the pink is so simple and so easy. We get a lot of compliments on it. Bobby, you traveled to the Pacific Northwest a lot in your previous job. Can you explain how that region has influenced Grow? I was fortunate to be able to stop in and shop at some of my favorite plant shops [in the Pacific Northwest] and soak in an aesthetic that I had

never seen before. The horticultural community is strong [there], and I found this extremely inspiring and was filled with an excitement to someday expand Fort Worth’s greenery. Granted, 240 square feet is a bit of a micro-addition, but luckily this is only the beginning for Grow Plant Shop. What kinds of plants do y’all specialize in? We specialize in plants for the modern plant enthusiast. Low maintenance, visually striking, tropical and rare plants are what we like to fill our Airstream with. For those who don’t have a green thumb, what’s a good gateway plant or starter plant? One of our automatic

go-tos is the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). It can tolerate nearly any light level and likes an easy watering once a week. What’s each of your favorite plant in the shop? We both have the same favorite plant: Monstera deliciosa. It’s a showstopper that only gets better with age. Longest running plant in your own home? That would be our four-year-old Monstera deliciosa. We planted him right after we got married and moved into our home. He has been split up and repotted several times now and is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Any plans for expanding the inventory? This fall, we’ll be fully stocked with a variety of pumpkins and seasonal outdoor foliage. What’s the most common question y’all get in the store? One. “What do you recommend for a spot that doesn’t get a ton of light and doesn’t need much water?” Our go-to recommendations are snake plants and ZZs. Two. “Can you help me save my fiddle leaf fig tree?” The answer is always yes.

lorist Bill Bostelmann has a knack for sniffing out up-and-coming areas of the city. The first iteration of his flower shop, Flowers on the Square, took up residence in what he called West Bank — now home to what’s actually called Left Bank, where places like Tom Thumb, Hopdoddy and 85ºC Bakery Café have risen. He left that 1-acre spot with a “Manhattan view” as he calls it, when developers came in with an offer — “an obscene amount of money,” he says. Next stop: 3 acres overlooking the Trinity River off of White Settlement Road. Bostelmann bought the property just before value for land in the area skyrocketed. “I was driving back from Dallas, and I called my friend that owned this [land],” Bostelmann said. “It sat here for probably eight years and nobody had moved on it.” Things changed quickly.

“Here we are out in the middle of essentially nowhere, we put up this three-story building, and all of a sudden, every real estate person up and down here is starting to see a little bit of energy happening. Almost five years later, we’re in the middle of seven or 800 apartments and three gated communities.” He calls his new spot “North Bank.” You probably know it as The River District. Few businesses or homeowners have views as pristine as the one Bostelmann enjoys from his residence above the shop that doubles as a rentable event space. This very spot would become a big part of selling riverfront lots in the gated communities. Sellers used the space to host groups of 30 or 40 Realtors out on the balcony to showcase what The River District views looked like. Riverfront lots started in the $600,000s and $700,000s. “I looked at them and thought they were never going to sell those lots at that price,”

Bostelmann said. “They were the first to go.” It’s a testament to the space Bostelmann has created. But he didn’t have to start totally from scratch. He scrapped his “West Bank” building before it was torn down and took all of the aluminum doors and windows, Mexican doors, railings and banisters. The key that opens the front door is still the same key that worked at that former location for 13 years. “It’s outrageous what we took out of that building,” he says.

The first floor of Flowers on the Square is filled with floral arrangements, faux table setups, vases, and all the other items you’d expect to find at a floral shop. But a quick jaunt up the stairs or elevator and you’re suddenly transported to a home that looks like it was plucked out of San Miguel de Allende. Much of the décor was, including two 19th-century bookkeeper’s tables that flank both sides of a long banquette bench built by local furniture maker Bianco Brothers. The color of the long leather bench is a nod to Hermes orange. “I loved it so much that I did the same thing in the kitchen,” says Bostelmann. Above the banquette, where many gather for small luncheons, is a work of art by architect Harvey Phillips that Bostelmann purchased from a Dallas art gallery in the early ’80s. He scored the perfectly rustic dining table at a Bowie, Texas, antique store that was going out of business. A cozy, eclectic and colorful foyer across from the living room welcomes guests for a seat during cocktail hour. Bostelmann, of course, handles the floral, while a funky and wellequipped kitchen serves as a space for caterers to cook and prep. News about the space, which runs a rental fee of $800, has spread almost exclusively by word of mouth. “It’s always amazing to me how many literally thousands of people have been to events here. Some come to several parties a year.” One of those parties is an annual event for the National Cowgirl Museum each spring. Bostelmann says the three- to four-hour cocktail party is their bread and butter. It’s how guests can best enjoy the star of the show — the balcony. The Mexican tile, another built-in banquette and a fireplace adorned with antler busts welcome guests through all four seasons and overlook that perfectly dramatic view northwest down the Trinity River.

he quaint home sits on a quiet street on Fort Worth’s west side, shaded by the leafy branches of mature trees. Its rooms were once filled with stately antiques, oriental carpets, oil paintings and heirloom silver. Elegant, most definitely, but also expected. And, yes, a little dull. Which might have been fine for most people. And it was fine for a while for this homeowner. Until she decided it was time for a change. She wanted her home to reflect her own vivacious personality, to complement her daughter’s effervescence and creativity. She wanted rooms filled with optimism, joy and color. Lots and lots of color. “It’s what my life needed,” the homeowner says. “It came at just the right time.” Enter Kellye Hunt Raughton of Maven, an interior design firm and boutique on the bricks of historic Camp Bowie Boulevard. Over the past three years, Raughton has worked together with the homeowner to inject lightness, brightness and vibrant

Raughton incorporated many of the homeowner’s existing pieces into the front room, including a pair of lamps with new shades, favorite artworks and a family portrait, working from existing colors in the art and recovering chairs with Samuel & Sons’ fabric. “I really like mixing old and new together,” Raughton says, noting the dramatic chandelier, which remained in its place. Raughton added a custom Stark carpet and custom draperies that include Roman shades in chartreuse silk velvet .

This room is all about impactfully blending old and new, vintage and modern. The abstract oil painting by Amy Young is from the Park Hill home furnishings shop, Park & Eighth, as is the vintage brass swan table that takes center stage, surrounded by a suite of chairs in Schumacher fabric. The room’s pièce de résistance: a spectacular golden Agave Americana chandelier by Marjorie Skouras for Currey & Company that Raughton and the homeowner have nicknamed the “Tree of Life.”

The ﬁrst thing Raughton did to maximize light in this room was to remove the shutters that covered the windows. For privacy, Raughton added drapes with an inner layer of café curtains. Raughton designed the table and the bench, which were made by a craftsman in Aledo. The chairs are done in Shumacher and Osborne & Little fabric, with Samuel & Sons trimming and a ﬁnal touch of an oversized monogram.

color into every room while maintaining the elegance and sophistication of the prior décor and respecting the bones of the 1940s Cape Cod-style home. It’s a difficult balance to achieve, Raughton acknowledges. “I think you truly have to have the right balance of color and texture and print, and they all have to work together simultaneously,” she says. To achieve that, Raughton began with fabrics, then added layer upon layer of custom pieces, clever touches and controlled contrasts. The homeowner appreciated Raughton’s ability to create highconcept design that could withstand both the tests of time and the trials of everyday life, with its spills, clutter, dust and more – the more here being dogs, a cat and a backyard full of prize chickens.

Today, it’s still the same traditional home on the same quiet street, but any sense of same-old now stops at the door. Raughton has lavished every inch of the three-bedroom/three-bath home in a full spectrum of glorious color, texture, pattern and shine, from the entry foyer and formal front rooms to the laundry closet beside the back door that connects the breakfast room to the expansive backyard. The oriental carpets and the heirloom silver are still here, as are the stately antiques, but they’ve been given a new life, revitalized by the vibrancy of the new surroundings. Looking around at her finished rooms, the homeowner beams. “This house,” she says, “is my happy corner of the world.”

The vivid magenta and orange color scheme in the ofﬁce was inspired by a needlepointed owl that the homeowner’s mother crafted when she was young, along with an orange leather heirloom chair. Raughton and the homeowner fell in love with the vibrancy of the Osborne & Little wallpaper. Fine Paints of Europe did labor-intensive lacquering across the room’s millwork and built-in shelving to achieve the perfect chocolaty richness. A painting by Joey Lancaster hangs on a wall of mirrored beveled tiles. Raughton considers it the centerpiece of the ofﬁce.

The master bedroom offers a respite from the riotous colors downstairs, but there’s still plenty of texture, shine and luxury. Nearly everything from the thick, soft carpet to the oversized quilted headboard has been custom made to ﬁt the dimensions of the room. Raughton designed the Art Deco-esque bench at the foot of the bed. Although the room includes countless indulgent touches – Schumacher fabrics on the bedding and curtains, velvet pillows, a Hermes throw blanket – Raughton opted for wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries that mimics silk but is actually vinyl.

Katie sourced the set of rattan chairs near the ﬁreplace and the sleek marble-topped coffee tables in the living room from Wisteria. “The spacious room with all the glass opening onto the veranda is, I think, the best part of the house,” says Mike Barnes of Barnes & Associates. “On most of our houses, we try to bring the outdoors into the indoors.”

hough a self-proclaimed minimalist at heart, interior designer and Fort Worth native Katie Irsaneous’ personal home — which she shares with her husband, Michael, and daughters Ellie, 3, and Avery, 6 months — is as warm and inviting as they come. Nestled into Aledo’s La Madera neighborhood, the space is devoid of clutter but contains a pleasingly contrasting mixture of stark lines and soft curves, crisp whites and warm wood tones. The look is anchored by beautiful, neutral-themed abstract paintings throughout — including a commissioned piece that hangs in the kitchen, Katie’s favorite — by local artist Heather Essian. But the making of their home wasn’t as effortless as it now looks. During the building phase, the couple was still in New York, which is where they met. Michael, originally from Egypt,

works in finance, and Katie, a graduate of Texas Women’s University, was working at Ralph Lauren Home Collection. With their first little one on the way, the two called on the expertise of architect Mike Barnes of Barnes & Associates Architects to begin designing a space they could love — one in Texas, near Katie’s family. “We did a take on French country and updated it to be a little more modern,” says Barnes of the nearly 5,000-squarefoot home, which Katie requested be painted white, both inside and out. “The white definitely made it feel special.” Katie made many, many flights to and from New York with her newborn in tow and simultaneously managed both her budding design firm’s consults and the building process. “We put a lot of thought into every detail. It’s a fully functional home,” she says proudly. “We did a lot of due diligence to get where we are.”

After moving in on Christmas Eve in 2016, Katie spent the better part of a year slowly bringing in furniture, decor and other pieces that she felt reflected her desired aesthetic. The walls painted in Benjamin Moore Pure White proved to be the perfect blank canvas from which to create the finished look, which is crisp, airy and bright with coastal influences and punches of midcentury — all anchored in neutral tones, Katie’s signature palette. “Being in the design world, people want color,” she says. “So I feel like my home is my sanctuary. I find it peaceful having minimal color.” The couple spends a great deal of time in that sanctuary, working from their respective home offices. Katie’s boutique design firm, Irsaneous Interiors — which she runs alongside her good friend and colleague Brie Stierwalt, taking on commercial, residential and retail projects — operates from the downstairs office, while Michael works from his desk in the upstairs guest bedroom when he’s not traveling to his New York office. But when the day is done and the family comes together for a meal in their beautiful white kitchen or a swim in their newly finished pool, Katie is able to look around with unbridled satisfaction. “I don’t want to blend in, but I don’t want to stand out. I just want to be an individual,” she says, “and I think my house speaks very well to that.”

Katie kept the master bedroom simple, appointing it with clean white nightstands and bringing in warm tones via the woven benches at the end of the bed.

The master bathroom is one of Katie’s most loved spaces in the entire home. “It’s just so bright and airy,” she says. Katie incorporated personal touches like a framed set of her grandmother’s handkerchiefs that hangs between the mirrors so she can see them every day.

The youngest of the couple’s two girls, Avery, has a room every bit as unique as she is. “I felt she was going to march to her own beat,” says Katie, who couldn’t resist the bold-yet-dainty ﬂoral print wallpaper by Clarke & Clarke for the pretty space.

Touting the most color of any area in the house, the playroom is a lively and adorable spot for the girls to have fun. A large jute rug grounds the space, layered with a colorful Turkish rug Katie picked up in Round Top. A set of four framed botanicals and a sleek little table-and-chairs set add a bit of whimsy.

Girly, quaint and ﬁlled with all the pretty things, Katie made sure her 3-year-old daughter, Ellie, had a room to love. And it has quite a bit of her mother’s touch, too. Katie created the four ballerina drawings that hang on either side of the spindle bed, which was Katie’s childhood bed. She reﬁnished it and topped off the dainty bedding with vintage pillows she found on one of her regular trips to Round Top.

The dining table of Katie’s dreams came to fruition, thanks to a friendly connection. Katie’s design ﬁrm colleague, Brie Stierwalt, connected Katie with her father-in-law, Mark Stierwalt, who builds furniture as a hobby. A hobby that churned out a stunning white oak dining table in under 14 days. The modernesque chairs are from Scout Design Studio in Dallas.

Katie and Michael designed their pool, the newest addition to their home, which was brought to life by J. Caldwell Custom Pools. The backyard space, which includes a nearby outdoor kitchen, is equipped with chic chaise lounge chairs by Frontgate, comfy chairs and cushions by Zuo Modern, a set of white woven chairs from World Market and a vintage bar cart for effortless entertaining.

Inspired Designs

Southlake Transitional Kitchen with Surprise Pantry Inspired Designs took a typical Southlake early 2000 kitchen used by a very busy family with four children and three dogs and transformed it into a timeless but current space that works for the whole family. By removing one too many archways and moving and disguising a poorly laid out pantry, the space became the perfect open plan kitchen. “The client wanted the look of marble without the upkeep, so we found the perfect Odyssey White Honed dolomite slabs that worked beautifully,” says Inspired Designs owner Sue Dolezal. “The fabricator did a great job on the seam in the island, too, which can be tricky, but we really wanted a huge island.” The hidden pantry made to look like cabinetry, navy on the island,

along with the dolomite counters set this kitchen apart. Dolezal explains that the design aesthetic behind this project was keeping the kitchen in line with the house but making it more transitional. “Client wanted open, easy to maneuver with a lot of people and great for large gatherings. I think it works great for all of those things,” Dolezal says. Dolezal says of her design style: “I love solving problems with design innovation – and I think the back wall with the towers balancing each other on either end and hiding a pantry show my style for clean, functional spaces that not only work for a client but are beautiful to look at.”

Ferrier Builders, Inc. Midcentury Marvel

This midcentury modern home instantly charmed the owners, despite its recent years of neglect. They purchased it with a vision of restoring its original beauty, especially amidst rumors of it being torn down by other bidders. They reached out to Ferrier Builders to help them execute their thoughtful renovation. The work included creating a luxurious master suite within the existing space, featuring a modern soaking tub and walk-in shower. Energy upgrades included spray foam insulation, new energy-efficient windows and sliding doors, tankless water heater and an upgraded mechanical system. “The home had so much potential and life left in it,” says Heather Laminack, general manager of Ferrier Builders. “Working alongside the

owners and their interior designer, we worked as a team to restore it.” Restored elements include the terrazzo floors, restoration of original turquoise kitchen sink, oven and stovetop, original wood paneling in main living area, and repair of damaged exterior siding and stone. The homeowners let the original character of the home drive the vision of the remodel. Ferrier helped them polish the diamond to make it shine. Features that really make it “pop” include the added landscaping and al fresco dining areas, new vibrant exterior paint colors, playful Modwall tile in master shower, and careful curation of fixtures and furnishings. “We enjoy the process of restoring what once was forgotten,” says Laminack, “which in itself is conservation in action — a core value of our company.”

Outdoor Kitchens: the Good, the Better and the Cost by Dale Jackson

hen I think of the fall season, I think football games, the smell of grilling and spending time appreciating the outdoors. Few fall pleasures are as enjoyable as a good cookout in the backyard with family and friends. There are many variables to the overall cost of grilling outdoors. Some of us choose a simple cooking setup while others choose the full-blown, pro-like station with more options than we have in our indoor kitchen. At The Collective Outdoors, we often get the same questions: What does an outdoor kitchen cost to build and what types are available? The answer varies. The most costly items in the construction of an outdoor kitchen are the appliances, gas, rock or exterior construction, countertops, and electrical. Some kitchens have all of these while others have few. Appliances usually consume up to 35 percent of the overall budget, so it’s important to understand which options fit your needs. The Minimum: Food Prep Station If you don’t need appliances or your indoor

kitchen is very close to the backyard, a basic food prep station will do the trick. This is the most affordable way to entertain outdoors. This would include a party station to make drinks and plenty of countertops for setting food and trays. Cost Estimate: $4,200+ The Basics: A Grill and Countertops Most people want one simple item: a grill. This is for the couple or growing family that enjoys grilling and plans to use the space two to three times a week. Usually these kitchens are at least 6-feet long and have a four-burner grill with large countertop areas on each side. I always recommend adding a trash drawer to keep it stored away and out of sight. Cost Estimate: $7,000+ Extra: A Kitchen with Amenities You can take your outdoor grilling up a notch with a fridge and a Big Green Egg. An outdoor kitchen at this price point leaves room in the budget for a drawer set for storing utensils and paper towels. Other trendy amenities include a USB charging station and raised bar-top areas for eating and

enjoying company. You can switch from a rock countertop to concrete or granite for an upscale look. Cost Estimate: $9,500+ Full Service: Elevate with a Sink The comfort a sink provides in an outdoor kitchen is awesome. This enables easier food prep, available water, and speeds up the clean-up process. But it comes at a hefty price due to various local city codes and permitting requirements. Cost Estimate: $14,000+ The Splurge: The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen This outdoor kitchen is for the family or entertainers that thrive outdoors. Want to entertain and cook for large groups, have everything at your fingertips outside, and become the envy of your neighbors? You will never have an empty house on Sunday again. Try a grill that has lights, soft-close drawers, a smart fridge, and a Wi-Fi built-in grill for easier cooking. Large frying stations and spacious griddles can also add to the ultimate cooking experience. And an ice maker for cocktails is a must.

Pudding? So Posh Between Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding and Central Market’s latest event, Passport United Kingdom, there’s been a bit more sophistication in the air. Central Market’s pastry chef and one-half of the team behind the ultra popular Hot Box Biscuit Club, Sarah Hooton, shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding recipe that will have your guests tasting a dollop of the UK this fall.

STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING Serves 8-12

Ingredients Cake: • 1 1/3 cup water • 1 cup dates, pitted and roughly chopped • ½ teaspoon baking soda • 3 tablespoons unsalted softened butter • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1 cup dark brown sugar • 2 eggs • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Sticky Toffee Sauce: • 1 stick unsalted butter • 1 ½ cups heavy cream • ½ cup dark brown sugar • ¼ cup brandy (optional) • ⅛ teaspoon salt

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F and grease a 9-by-13inch baking dish. 2. Heat water and dates in a medium sauce pan until boiling. Turn heat down, add baking soda and mash dates with a whisk until paste-like. It’s okay if it’s a bit lumpy. Remove from heat. 3. In a KitchenAid mixer, use the paddle attachment and cream the butter and brown sugar together until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. 4. Add the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla, scraping the bowl as you go. 5. Mix the flour, baking soda and salt together in a bowl. Alternate adding the date mixture with the dry ingredients to the butter/eggs mixture. 6. Pour the mixture into the baking dish and bake for about 30 minutes, until just firm to the touch. 7. For the topping: melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, then slowly add cream and dark brown sugar, brandy (if using) and salt, whisking continuously until the mixture bubbles gently and comes together to form a smooth mixture. Cook over low heat until sauce reduces down by one-third and thickens slightly. 8. Pour the topping over the cooked pudding. 9. Add a dollop of whipped cream.

he home Emily Gilbert shares with her family on a scenic street in Tanglewood is a work in progress, she says. On the day I arrive, the driveway has been torn up as they ready for a renovation that will add a larger backyard, plus an office where Emily can see her interior design clients. But in her kitchen, everything is perfectly arranged, and in one corner resides a cozy sanctuary where the family gathers twice a day for meals. “The kids have breakfast here every morning,” Emily says of her son, Grey, 6, and daughter Ellie, 3. “They love connection, and they really want their momma by them, so we snuggle up there.” And, she emphasizes, “We do not miss dinner together.” The functionality of the space embodies Emily’s philosophy as a designer. “My whole goal with my personal house and with my clients is to make it more than a pretty space,” she says. “I want the spaces I create to be a place where people want to create memories and for life’s moments to happen within.” Those moments, with the Gilbert children and Emily’s husband, Landry, happen on a custom built-in banquette upholstered in Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito fabric in the salmon colorway. Chippendale chairs by Bunaglow 5 are upholstered in the same fabric. It’s an ambiguous shade that straddles the lines of masculine and feminine, mature and childlike. And it pairs perfectly with a marble table by Four Hands. One might think the table was built to the proportions of the bench or vice versa. They weren’t, but their precise scale is also no accident. “For me,

more than color or anything else, scale, balance and proportion are the most important,” says Emily. Above, a single hanging shade fixture by Circa Lighting illuminates the space. More notes of childlike whimsy are found in the simple artwork. Two prints of journal pages by artist Soicher Marin are framed on the wall — they used to be in Grey’s room and were moved to the kitchen when the Gilberts moved into this home six months ago. A small vintage rug below the sink offers a pop of color in the space otherwise grounded by neutrals. “I like color in small portions because I like to change things a lot, and I feel like if I’m too color committed, then I don’t have as much flexibility,” Emily says. After graduating with an interior design degree from TCU, Emily worked with a couple builders before branching out on her own. Her first project was a pro bono design for the Como neighborhood’s Rivertree Academy. From there she got a few clients, and her business has thrived almost exclusively via word of mouth since then. Emily says in her younger years, she gravitated more toward color, but when Grey was born, her aesthetic shifted. “I just felt like there was enough busy in my world between juggling raising a child and a business and the clutter that life creates that I didn’t want my spaces to make me feel more wild.” Now, the children add their own color. Where usually sits a bowl of fruit or vase of flowers at the center of a kitchen table lies cups filled with colored pencils — fostering creativity for Grey and Ellie, who often sit at the table with coloring books. “It’s nice to have color at our fingertips.”

s the owner of Grit + Gold, a local wedding planning company, Lottie Fowler is used to creating beautiful spaces. But at home, she says, “Things are allowed to fall apart.” You wouldn’t know it by looking at the backyard of her 1939 Cape Cod cottage on Fort Worth’s Westside. “It lends so well to my eclectic nature,” she says of the home’s architecture. “The all-over wood shack from the exterior to its roof is a rare thing of beauty in Fort Worth.” While the inside of Lottie’s home is neutral, she says she felt free to go more bold in the backyard, starting with the door, painted Dutch Tile Blue by Sherwin-Williams. From there she pulled in

lots of texture – rugs, pillows, rattan chairs and plants to add a level of coziness. She sourced the colorful rug from World Market and her outdoor furniture from Target. “I love all the Target outdoor collections, and surprisingly, they have held up much better than more pricey sets I have purchased,” she says. But someone this creative is never done designing. Lottie currently has big plans in the works to add a pergola with hammocks leading out to a Euro-inspired plunge pool. Until then, the Fowlers will continue living in what Lottie calls their “family space,” where Lottie and her husband, Clint, drink coffee; their daughter, Saylor, plays basketball; and the dogs, Bruno and Cash, sunbathe.
