My love of the Natchez Trace Parkway is well documented. I love all 444 miles, and the way the landscape changes between Natchez, Miss. and Nashville. But the section of the National Park Service-managed roadway that runs through Williamson County is an absolute gem. It takes only minutes to get away from the congestion of Brentwood and the buzz in downtown Franklin to be cycling or driving through rolling hills with no commercial businesses, no billboards, no distractions. Jump on near mile marker 440 at the Double Arch Bridge at the intersection of TN-96 and exit around mile marker 399 after Sheboss Place. You’ll get the chance to take in scenic overlooks, historic markers and Creekside hikes, as well as reset your brain. It’s like going on vacation in your own backyard. – MARGARET LITTMAN

Handmade pasta and pizza are just the start for one of Williamson County’s most beloved restaurants. If you ask anyone around here for a recommendation on where to go eat, Culaccino is always on the list. The restaurant can feel both cozy or upscale depending on what you want your night to be like, and the food is consistently good and always elevated beyond what you think you’re getting. (Don’t skip the burrata salad.) Chef and owner Frank Pullara is also our best chef this year for a reason and he recommends the ravioli or the il re de bologna pizza. Culaccino is Italian comfort food at its best. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the wine list is extensive without being overwhelming. What about the dessert, you ask? Tiramisu. From pillowy house made rolls to the well-known cauliflower or the intricate octopus and shrimp bruschetta, you could load up on appetizers and leave happy. But, you’d regret

The restaurant is known for its award-winning chef Deb Paquette who launched the original in Nashville in 2012. It was a logical move for the three-time state champion. Last summer, Brown made the cut during his PGA Tour debut, placing 26th at the Myrtle Beach Classic. In 2023, Brown became the youngest medalist ever at the U.S. Amateur Championship. Making menus is really a team effort, Lambert says. “The sous chefs always help me so much with everything,” she says. “And, it’s also sometimes I forget. Like, did Deb do that? Or did I do that? Because we have such similar styles, we’ll be looking at

I can’t tell.’ And I’m like, ‘I honestly have no idea.’” They have synergy when it comes to creating a new dish or menu. “I think that’s why we’ve done so well working together for this long. It’s really easy,” she says. “It is hard to find somebody that you can kind of meld with like that.” The two have been able to create something special in the Etch and Etc. concepts, so much so that they were able to bring another location to life in Franklin. While the location in downtown Nashville can feel very high energy because of the volume of people and tourists, Lambert says that the vibe of the Franklin location feels more like a laid back neighborhood spot you can come and visit anytime while still remaining elevated for a celebration.

With seasonal menus and a chef that likes to source food locally, you’re bound to get something good no matter what you pick. Load up on the small plates or go for the entrees, either way you’ll walk away full and happy.

So obviously all of those elements are going to exist on the dish,” she says. “It’s going to be a little more friendly to what people have in their minds when they think about shrimp and grits.” Their sauces do stand out and make

take it out of the regular rotation because it was a lot of work to execute night after night. “It was so much prep for it, and the thing about downtown that is very different is the volume can be overwhelming in comparison,” Lambert says. “I mean, we do sometimes pull it out of the woodwork for [chef specials], for sure. I mean, they’re delicious.” We laughed as she told me the problem was that they sold better than expected, adding they should have known better with a fried ball of cheese and rice in the South. If that remains true, they better be ready to prepare extra for which I’m already drooling over. “I am not a less is more person, by any means, and neither is Deb,” Lambert says. “We try to make food that we think is interesting and fun. I don’t think everything has to be the most serious thing in the world. Sometimes it should be like a fun dish and sometimes you need sauce to liven things up a little bit. “We try and plate things so you can choose your own sauce level. Like, it’s on the side here and maybe you like this one more than this one, so it’s not all mixed together. I like to let people choose their own adventure a little bit. ... Play with your food.” ▼

We profiled him earlier this year in partnership with our sister publication the Nashville Scene for its annual People Issue, which profiles some of the most interesting people in the Nashville area. His business is booming as he prepares to open a second location of Culaccino in Nashville Yards. Read the story below about how Pullara became the chef and restaurateur that he is today. With the opening of a new outpost of his Franklin restaurant Culaccino in Nashville Yards, Frank Pullara is establishing himself as a restaurateur — but his passion is still in the kitchen. “Ever since I was 8 years old, I was already cooking with my mom and my great-grandma and my nonna,” Pullara says. “I remember like on Easter, my great-grandma was peeling potatoes, and [I was] getting up and watching or helping. So I’ve always been interested in food.” He opened the original Culaccino in Franklin in 2021, and last year he opened Culamar just across the street, unveiling the city’s first downtown rooftop bar and restaurant. “I remember growing up, though, on New Year’s Eve and Christmas and stuff like that, my aunts and my nonna would make a bunch of seafood,” Pullara says. “I thought it would be a great opportunity PHOTO: ERIC ENGLAND

So who better to have directing that than our own Megan Murphy Chambers — who audiences just recently saw in our hilarious production of The Play That Goes Wrong?” Finally, Studio Tenn’s 16th season concludes with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s groundbreaking rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar May 7-24, 2026, featuring Tonynominee Adam Pascal (Rent; Something Rotten!) in the title role. “We’re so fortunate to have Adam Pascal joining us for Jesus Christ Superstar,” Cassidy says. “He’s a dear friend, an exceptional talent and he’s going to be fantastic in this role. In directing the piece, I really want to look at Jesus — the man, the teacher. And the question I will ask our audience is that if Jesus showed up today — a man who championed love, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, nonviolence and God — what would we do to him? History has a way of repeating itself. “I chose this season based on theatrical diversity,” Cassidy adds. “There is literally something for everyone — horror, dance, thriller, comedy and epic musical. We’re incredibly proud, not only of this upcoming season, but also of the ongoing work we’re doing here in the community. Pull-Tight will perform Alabama Story by Kenneth Jones Aug. 1-16, 2025. Lucky Stiff, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, will be Oct. 3-18, 2025. To end the year, the group presents Seasonal Allergies by Katherine DiSavino and Kevin Mead Dec. 5-20, 2025. In February 2026, Pull-Tight will present Three Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich followed in April 2026 by a performance of Harvey by Mary Chase. Newer to the local theater scene, FLO was founded in 2020 by Karen Dumont and Julie Gilbreath to bring a light opera company to the community. The group recently announced its 2025-2026 season. The group will perform its favorite numbers from famous composer and lyricist duo W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan in The Best of Gilbert & Sullivan June 6-8, 2025. In the Fall, FLO will present the Tony-winning musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder Sept. 19-21, 2025. The season ends in January when the group will perform Amahl and the Night Visitors.

And I bought them more aspirationally,” Rostad says. “I came to a point with my reading project where I began to learn more about myself and my own reading, and I knew that if I didn’t make a plan to read these, they would just sit on my shelves the rest of my life, and I would never crack them open. So that was another reason I wanted to shift to reading the Great Books and The Immortal Books. I knew if I didn’t set a plan to do it, it would never happen.” The task can seem daunting, but Rostad says it’s a smoother process than one might think. “I kind of thought going into it that maybe I need to get a literature degree or something to even understand what’s going on

needed for the community. Franklin City Manager Eric Stuckey spoke with the Williamson Scene about several of the efforts that the City of Franklin is either wrapping up or getting underway.

CITY HALL One of the most visible projects, considering its proximity to downtown Franklin, the city hall on 3rd Avenue South will likely be demolished in May. Stuckey explained it was built in the early ‘70s as a mall for the downtown area, but it was only in operation as a mall for about eight years before it became a “temporary” city

It has clearly become much more permanent than temporary. “For many years, we’ve had this sort of underperforming, old, outdated mall property that we’re making into a city hall,” Stuckey says. “It’s time to have something that fits the community, fits the work we do and serves the community well for the next 100 years. And, that’s what we’re building.” The city employees have all moved to temporary locations until the new city hall is complete in 2027. The vision for the building isn’t about just the city hall itself, Stuckey says, but really about reimagining the whole block. There will be a park area on the side of the property near Church Street and the building itself will be designed to work with the character of the square. It will be three stories and include some additional space for potential tenants such as restaurants or retail spaces.

GRICULTURE. It’s stamped in big letters in the middle of the Tennessee state seal, and it’s been a part of life in Williamson County since it was founded. As the

population has boomed, farmland has been depleted through the years and the once rural county is now largely a suburban area, despite all the local historic preservation efforts. The county has always maintained a strong connection to its rural roots and there have been protections, such as land trusts and zoning codes, to maintain local farms.
