For generations, the Iroquois Steeplechase has been a tradition for Nashvillians of all ages. Every second Saturday in May, picnics are packed, hats are donned and the pilgrimage begins to Percy Warner Park. For months, fashion-forward Nashvillians have meticulously planned their ensembles, always accessorized by a hat or fascinator. It is an event I have been lucky enough to attend — and eagerly look forward to — each and every year.

This year, we take a deeper look into the history and heritage of this prestigious event and how the funds raised on this special spring day support the Nashville community. Gloria Houghland guides us through a journey of the marathon of parties that once surrounded Steeplechase. And, if you find that attending Steeplechase did not quite fulfill your need for horsey encounters, Christiana Roussel takes us inside four fabulous equestrian getaways. We go behind the scenes with Nashville Ballet’s new Artistic Director Nick Mullikin, discussing his career inspiration and what informs his choreography and directorial decisions today.

With the spring social season in full swing, Nfocus was in the room for all the events. It is a day in which friendship and community come together over chicken salad and cocktails.

Making His Pointe Nick Mullikin ascends as leader at Nashville Ballet Ballet slippers and sole pads are as familiar to Nick Mullikin as his own bare feet; that’s what happens when a child takes to the barre and starts dancing at two years old. At 16, Nick moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, to train at the Virginia School of the The Basics Arts, seriously pursuing a career in dance. AchievName: Nick Mullikin ing his dream, he began Title: Artistic Director and CEO dancing professionally of Nashville Ballet with the Houston BalHometown: Madison, WI let at the age of 19, later Zip Code: 37212 joining Salt Lake City’s Years in Nashville: 8 Ballet West.

After relinquishing the Number of Dancers Helped: More than I can count spotlight, Nick worked in administration for Ballet West before returning to school at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA).

Nick graduated with a BA in government, minoring in communications, and he completed UTA’s business foundations program at the McCombs School of Business.

An in-demand guest ballet teacher, Nick has worked with over 20 schools and university dance programs nationwide, premiering the first onstage piece he choreographed for Nashville Ballet — a fabulous pas de deux called 2,192 Days that launched at Memphis Dance Festival.

Having worked at Nashville Ballet for eight years, directing the school and the second company, Nick now takes the helm as artistic director and CEO. He looks to continue the amazing partnerships between the dance company and Nashville’s unique, local music community.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Brett Favre was a hero of mine, so I wanted to be a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.

I also wanted to be an astronaut: The idea of exploring something as vast and incomprehensible as space was appealing.

What made you want to be a dancer? I didn’t know you could be a professional ballet dancer until I was training at the Virginia School of the Arts, but ballet made me feel free and that freedom was intoxicating.

How has your dance career informed your choreography and directorial decisions? The last ballet that I created for the stage, Four Loves, focused on shifting from classical ballet technique and pointe shoes to a more contemporary, grounded style — all in the same piece. Four Loves is a good metaphor for how I envision the future of our company: easily tackling classical works while also taking on newer, more contemporary pieces — and anything in between.

I had those opportunities as a dancer, and it opened the world to me; it showed me that ballet doesn’t have to be stoic or old. As a movement language, ballet is versatile, able to tell new stories without abandoning the defining techniques.

My hope is that Nashville Ballet’s range will be reflected in my choreography and by the work our company presents.

What has been your most surreal moment working for Nashville Ballet? Surreal has become the day-to-day norm at Nashville Ballet.

on a Saturday morning in March to Morgxn singing “Pure Imagination” during a Ballet Ball rehearsal. Another includes listening to Grammy Award-winner Rhiannon Giddens do soundcheck in multiple venues across the country while on tour with our incredible dancers. When we filmed Nashville’s Nutcracker during the pandemic, it ended up winning a regional Emmy.

Everything is surreal when it’s a dream job.

What’s your favorite restaurant in town?

I think my favorite place to go is O-Ku, and Common Ground is quickly becoming a regular spot for me. I had dinner recently at Tailor Nashville and The Optimist, and I loved those, too.

What was the first production you were in? I debuted in The Nutcracker as a Bon Bon. What genre is your favorite to choreograph or direct? I enjoy working in both ballet and contemporary so much, and I grow each time I do. My plan is to create in both styles for this company, and my favorite is whatever style I’m working in at that moment.

What upcoming trends or performances are exciting you? We have leaned into digital at Nashville Ballet, and with that comes audience growth and development. It won’t replace our stage work, but it complements, introducing new audiences to ballet.

I’m excited, too, by the strong desire for an arts festival in Nashville. The upcoming Nashville Dance Festival is our company’s first foray into the city’s vibrant celebration of culture and the arts.

A Look T hat Suits You Tailoring and alterations make all the difference

His Style Let’s talk tailors

Gents! Celebration season — graduations, weddings, mitzvahs and more — is now upon us, so let’s talk about suiting up. Specifically, tailored suits. I always tell my clients: “If you can afford a tailored suit, do it!”

Why? First, unlike off-the-rack suits, a tailored suit is tailored to fit the unique measurements and proportions of your body. Second, a tailored suit allows for greater personalization and customization. If you’re partial to a periwinkle blue suit with a print of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night as your liner, go for it! I mean, good luck walking down the street, but go for it!

With tailored suits, you have the power to choose the fabric, the lining — even the buttons — ensuring that you create a one-of-a-kind suit. Third, a wellmade tailored suit — plus proper care and maintenance — can last for years, making it a smart investment for both style and practicality. Who doesn’t love a good ROI; am I right, fellas?

Here are things to consider when purchasing your first tailored suit: Tailor to Your Preference: Suiting is typically divided into four categories: Off the Rack, Made to Measure, Custom and Bespoke. Off the Rack refers to any suit you buy in a clothing store at the mall — what you see is what you get. Made to Measure refers to altering an existing pattern or design to fit your measurements, but the suit is not completely unique to you.

Custom, on the other hand, involves taking your measurements and creating a pattern specifically for you. (Confused yet?) Bespoke tailoring is the highest level of customization in suiting. It involves creating a 100% unique pattern for you based on your measurements. The suit is then made from scratch by the tailor. From scratch. Like a batch of your grandmama’s biscuits.

Do Your Research: Getting a tailored suit is a collaborative process between you and your tailor. Make sure you choose the correct tailor that matches your vision. Nashville has a strong men’s tailoring community (Levy’s, Eric Adler and Richards Bespoke, just to name a few).

Check out their websites. Check out their social media. View some of their previous work to find the right guy or gal for you. It’s almost like dating, minus the awkward conversations over sushi and sake.

Be Prepared: Come in with an idea of what you want. Some tailors may ask you to bring in your best-fitting suit or blazer for reference. Some may

ask you to bring reference photos to aid in the vision.

The worst thing you can do is walk into your suiting appointment with no idea of what you want. It’ll turn into the “What do you want?” scene from The Notebook with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.

(Spoiler alert: You won’t be Gosling in that scenario.)

Overall, if you decide to go down the tailored suit road, enjoy the process! It is a beautiful experience to see your name stitched on the inside of a one-ofa-kind suit jacket.

Her Style Altered ego It never ceases to amaze me how many times I hear clients say, “Wow, I never even thought about having this altered!” when evaluating a new or existing piece in their wardrobe. In this day and age of mass-manufacturing, a trusted seamster is not only helpful — they’re a necessity.

No two bodies are the same — even if they technically “fit” into the same numerical size — so it makes sense that the majority of clothing purchases could benefit from even a minor tweak or two.

I encourage my clients to put little value on the labeled size of any given item, and instead look at it more subjectively. They will often hear me ask, “If I could wave a magic wand right now, what would make this feel better to you?” The answer to this question normally falls within two categories: fit and functionality. Let’s take a deeper dive into both of these ideas.

Fit Check: How something fits is the first thing I’m objectively judging when I see a client try something on. There are often many small adjustments and tweaks that can be made by a skilled seamster, and like magic, totally transform the garment.

The next time you’re wondering if the fit of something could benefit from some alterations, here is a hot tip to keep in mind: Where are straight lines hitting you?

Remember, our eyes are always drawn to where there’s a straight line, so try asking yourself, “Is this line in the right spot?”

Some examples of this would be the hem

on a cropped pant or jean, or the waistline of a dress. Does that hem hit across the smallest part of your ankle? Does the waistline hit where you need definition?

Fun-ctionality: Now let’s look at functionality. This takes into consideration things like button/snap placement, length of straps or sleeves, moving pockets, etc. A question I like to bring up here is, “Does anything about the garment feel too fussy?” Meaning, is there something that would start to bug you after wearing it a while? Yes, that’s right — if something is bugging you about a piece of clothing, you can change it!

If something doesn’t fit or feel right, my rule of thumb is to simply have it evaluated by a seamster. They will be able to guide you in deciding if the alteration is worth the investment.

Glowing Embers Step inside East Nashville’s new Noko East Nashville’s newest dining darling has opened to rave reviews and hard-to-get reservations — all for good reason. The origin story of this bastion of culinary delight is a relatively common one now. During the pandemic, when longtime friends and seasoned restaurateurs Jon Murray and Wilson Brannock, along with Chef Dung “Junior” Vo wanted to entertain, they headed outside and fired up the grill. "[Cooking] outside over a wood fire, over coal… We found a lot of solace and comfort in a very uncertain time," says Jon, and those mutual feelings became a business plan.

Soon after, the three — now business partners — conceptualized Noko, a wood-fired Asianinspired restaurant. At the time, they had all been living in Atlanta where they worked for The Indigo Road Hospitality Group, headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina. Junior had been the executive chef at Charleston’s O-Ku and assisted the Nashville O-Ku location for several months, so after some brainstorming, the entrepreneurial trio set their sights on Music City.

Located in East Nashville at 701 Porter Road, Noko seats 82 diners indoors, including bar seating, and the outdoor patio seats about 40. By all accounts, this endeavor is a labor of love.

As guests first walk in, they pass a wall of wooden logs; the Noko owners chopped the wood and painstakingly built this wall themselves. “Maybe woodworking is our next calling,” jokes Wilson.

The wall hints at what guests can expect from the menu: Most of the offerings are seared, smoked or grilled. The name, Noko, comes from the Japanese surname Nokoribi, meaning “embers.” Having lived in Vietnam for 12 years while growing up, Junior aimed to create a menu featuring Asian-inspired comfort food with dishes such as smoked gochujang hot wings, Wagyu brisket and Szechuan green beans. For example, the District Sando is an unexpectedly delicious version of a grilled cheese sandwich made with prosciutto, truffle aioli, white cheddar cheese and togarashi atop milk bread. Many of the menu items can be prepared glutenfree, and they also have vegetarian options.

The partners see Noko as a neighborhood restaurant that’s also worth a drive. But for those nights you’d rather stay home, they recently launched a to-go program. In addition, there’s Noko at Home: social-media-friendly tutorials of Junior preparing guest favorites you can make at home.

KINDNESS BEGINS AT HOME The three partners, all of whom have spent decades in the food service industry, know restaurants’ reputations for little job security and even fewer benefits. They want to change that. Noko offers their staff four-day work weeks; medical, dental and vision insurance; fully covered virtual therapy; two weeks of paid vacation; and a gym membership. In addition, one percent of sales goes to a vacation fund for employees. “How can we really take care of others,” says Jon, “if we don’t take care of ourselves?”

JAPANESE FARMHOUSE The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed with a clean, modern aesthetic. Light wood tables — outfitted with chopsticks and dark blue linens — dot a concrete floor. An indigo tweed banquette lines one wall, and Chinese paper lanterns hang above a communal table.

The interiors were designed by David Leboutillier of The Restaurant Studio. “The goal was something very modern, very minimalistic, yet still had a level of warmth,” says Jon. Japanese woodblock pieces by local artist Yanira Vissepó are featured throughout the restaurant.

RAISE A GLASS The wood-fired method can also be found in Noko’s seasonally inspired cocktail menu, whether it’s the toasted garnishes atop non-alcoholic beverages or the Noko Old Fashioned with Wagyu fat-washed Angel’s Envy bourbon.

The Southeast Gin & Juice features Roku gin, calamansi, lime, spiced ginger and shiso. Noko offers an extensive menu of beers, wines and sake, and — for those who choose to abstain — there are several non-alcoholic cocktails on the menu, including the Porter Spritz, made with yuzu, lemon, orange blossom and tropical Red Bull.

The History of Steeplechasing

Over dinner one evening in 1752, at Buttevant Castle in Cork, Ireland, Edmund Blake and Cornelius O’Callaghan made a bet. Using church steeples as their guides, the two men would mount their best horses and race from St. John’s Church in Buttevant to St. Mary’s Church in Doneraile. The first to touch the base of the steeple at St. Mary’s would be the winner, and their prize — the winner of which has been lost to history — was reportedly a hogshead cask of wine. Confronting the match racers with natural fences and obstacles, this approximately four-mile race would be the inspiration for a unique racing style embraced by equestrians and enthusiasts worldwide. The race evolved, and — as early as the 1800s — tracks were developed for the sport featuring a variety of hurdles on prepared routes.

The Iroquois Steeplechase The Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation (VSHF), the governing body of the meet, traces the history of the Iroquois Steeplechase, beginning with the dreams of foxhunting friends and fellow enthusiasts in the early 1930s. Marcellus “Pops” Frost invited John Sloan Sr., Mason Houghland and Con Thompson Ball to a verdant valley in Percy Warner Park, previously gifted to the city of Nashville. Pops considered this the perfect location for a Steeplechase course; it was complete with hills, terrain changes, jump locations and, most importantly, a hillside for spectators. By 1937, the group had convinced the Works Progress Administration to provide backing for the funding and workforce to build the race course, and William DuPont Jr. was hired as designer. The VSHF (then Association) was created under the early leadership of Mason Houghland, and the inaugural event was held in May 1941.

John Sloan Sr. named the event after Pierre Lorillard’s horse, Iroquois: the first American-bred horse to win England’s preeminent horse race, the Epsom Derby, in 1881. When word spread of the history-making win, trading on Wall Street was suspended, and celebrations ensued. The stallion was later retired to stud at Belle Meade Plantation, and it has been said his DNA courses through more Kentucky Derby winners than hands have fingers. The Lorillard colors — cherry red and black — became the colors of the Iroquois Steeplechase. Today, the Lorillard trophy is awarded to the winner of the Calvin Houghland Iroquois and is presented by a member of the Houghland family.

Mason Houghland served 17 years as the Chair of the Race Committee before handing the responsibility to his son, Calvin, who modernized the course, making it safer for the competitors. Calvin remained Chair for the next 34 years. Besides riding in the first Iroquois and winning as a jockey two years later, Calvin captured the event on five more occasions as an owner.

Race Day The second Saturday in May holds a special place in the hearts of many Nashvillians.

For months, jockeys work with their horses to create a rhythmic relationship as a cohesive duo of competitors. And for weeks, Nashvillians plan just the right attire for a day of fun as they cheer on the magnificent athletes. The Iroquois Steeplechase draws thousands, and this day — the 82nd running — did not disappoint.

Despite foreboding weather forecasts, Steeplechase devotees showed up in all the pageantry expected of the day. A sea of artistic hats and seersucker suits descended on the Steeplechase grounds. Picnic baskets full of delicacies like cold fried chicken, chicken salad or pimento cheese sandwiches, cranberry salad, and much more appeared in the boxes to be enjoyed by hungry racegoers. The spirit of camaraderie pervaded as fans journeyed from box to box or through the tents, visiting with friends, enjoying mimosas, bloody marys and more. Our Steeplechase Style contest judges — Bentley Caldwell, Mary Huddleston and Carson Love — had the difficult task of moving through the crowds of revelers, looking for winners in each of the categories. And the highly anticipated contest did not disappoint. Winners were named in the following categories: Most Stylish Female (won by Tomi Gibson); Most Stylish Male (won by Jaylon Patton); Most Stylish Couple (won by Barry Grider and Pamela Evans); Most Outrageous Style (won by Nick McGregor); Social Media Style (won by Kelly Rowland); and the highly coveted Most Stylish Hat, presented by Christine A. Moore (won by Karla Adgent).

While the pageantry and heart-pounding action of steeplechasing is exciting, the true stars of the day are the causes this event serves to fund. The race — benefiting Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, The Foundation for the Horse, and Friends of Warner Parks — raises crucial funds to help support the missions of each of these tremendous organizations.

he air was electric as guests arrived for the annual Frist Gala. The main entrance was decorated to celebrate the Jeffrey Gibson installation, The Body Electric. Co-chairs Delphine Damon and Cathy Grier stunned in coordinating pink gowns that perfectly aligned with the theme’s colors. As the art institution’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Frist Gala has raised millions of dollars to support the museum’s mission: “to present and originate high-quality exhibitions with related educational programs and community outreach activities.” This work is vitally important to communities — as it is well noted, and studies show that access to the arts stimulates creativity, incites thoughtful conversation and elicits a sense of calm.

During the cocktail hour, guests mingled with friends and enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails; revelers were also invited to freely explore the installation. Jeffrey Gibson is of Cherokee heritage as well as a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, and he is considered one of today’s leading artists. His work seamlessly weaves together “traditional Indigenous art and culture with a modernist visual vocabulary.”

After exploring the exhibit, guests made their way to the beautiful tent — designed by Hugh Howser of H3 Events — which was a stunning and modern setting for the evening.

Hugh created an almost elite, club-like vignette for some tables in the room, complete with a second bar. Neon pink lighting splashed across the room, and crystalline accents fueled the vibrancy and energy as guests were seated for dinner. Reflecting on the evening, Frist Art Museum Executive Director Seth Feman commented: “It is such an honor for us to be a place so warmly embraced by the generous guests at tonight’s event. Art has the capacity to do so much for people.

We open our doors every day to inspire, delight and educate, but we also are a place of quiet and respite in times of personal crisis and civic distress in our city.” He concluded with thanks, saying, “The generosity of the people attending the Frist Gala helps make this possible, and for that, we are profoundly grateful.”

Time, Talent and Treasure The Cheekwood Society Dinner honors leading philanthropists

n Nashville, there are those residents whose names are synonymous with philanthropy — those who give their time, talent and treasure to help individuals and the community as a whole to rise to higher standards. Recently, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens held their annual Cheekwood Society dinner to honor those who lift up the venerable institution. The event invites members of the Cheekwood Society — members who donate at an annual level of $1,500 — to dine at the estate and celebrate exceptional Society members.

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens President and CEO Jane MacLeod presented Keith and Katherine with the Jane and Guilford Dudley Award for Excellence in Philanthropy and recalled meeting the Crosthwaites, relative newcomers to Nashville at the time: “I first met Katherine and Keith during the pandemic, and — even with their masks on — I could see the ‘smiles’ in their eyes,” recalled Jane. “I shared all the ways in which to engage with the institution. It was but a few minutes before Katherine and Keith enthusiastically expressed their interest in joining Cheekwood Society, The 1929 Club and more.” This year the Crosthwaites graciously underwrote the transformation of Botanic Hall’s Potter Room into a new garden shop which will continue to support the Cheekwood operational fund.

Barbara Bovender was then presented with The James A. Webb III Award for Extraordinary Service to Cheekwood. Barbara, a champion of an untold number of nonprofits in the community, partnered with her husband Jack to work in tandem, building a greater Cheekwood. “Barbara became one of our first Cheekwood Society chairs, challenging us to elevate the giving levels and setting an example by gifting at the highest level not once, but again and again,” remarked Jane, continuing “What is especially significant about Barbara’s service? It is continuous: her support, her engagement, our conversations and touchpoints are a constant.”

Finally, Truist Bank was awarded the Cheekwood Corporate Award for Excellence in Philanthropy for their continued support for the last 27 years. Jane noted Truist supported through the hard days and the good to today: “where Cheekwood is no longer ‘a best-kept secret’ but a beacon for joy and solace — a place for beloved memories and family traditions….”

Heroes Work Here Seton Celebration honors champions of community healthcare

T

he Seton Society, named for Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, invited supporters to the Conrad Nashville for their annual black-tie Seton Celebration. Hosted by the Ascension Saint Thomas Foundation, this event has been an important Nashville tradition for over 30 years, allowing the community to honor extraordinary individuals who embody the Foundation’s efforts.

Above the bustle of West End Avenue, two pairs of co-chairs — Ali and Blake Bollinger and DeeDee and Steve VanHook — welcomed guests to a cocktail reception on the Conrad Nashville’s Event Terrace. Serenaded by soft jazz, patrons moved into the Conrad Ballroom to be seated for the main event.

After a brief welcome from the co-chairs and leadership of Ascension Saint Thomas and the Foundation that supports it, Sister Catherine Brown of the Daughters of Charity gave the invocation, and guests dug into a beautiful dinner catered by the Conrad.

The highlight of the evening was the induction ceremony, which recognizes and pays tribute to “those physicians, nurses, health care workers and community volunteers who demonstrate excellence in their professions and in their service to Saint Thomas Health and the greater Nashville community.” This year’s honorees included Nancy Anness, C. Phil Lowe, Christi and Richard Speer, and Timothy Schoettle. Each inductee has consistently dedicated themselves to the traditions established

by Saint Elizabeth: working to deliver spiritually centered, compassionate patient care that is affordable and accessible.

Annually, proceeds from the Seton Celebration promote the various charitable missions of Ascension Saint Thomas. This year’s event will support the creation of the new Advanced Learning Center at Ascension St. Thomas West Hospital, providing a centralized home for nurse training, whether for those seeking to gain or to advance their nursing degree.

While raising funds for improved community health, the Seton Celebration represents a time to come together, acknowledge the works of the Daughters of Charity and celebrate shared values. A genuine crooner, Frankly Dez’s timeless voice rounded out the evening, lulling patrons home with full hearts.

Nfocus Steeplechase Style event dazzles with hats and fashion

n a beautiful spring evening, The Mall at Green Hills was transformed into its Steeplechase best as guests gathered for the Nfocus Steeplechase Style event. The atrium design of the shopping hotspot enhanced the feeling of Steeplechase as late-afternoon sunlight streamed onto the exclusive gathering. Once they entered, guests enjoyed delicious snacks from Host & Toast Luxury Concierge, sipped bourbon from Uncle Nearest, or imbibed effervescent bubbles as they browsed the Gus Mayer and Store 5a pop-up shops. Gus Mayer offered artistically designed hats by Christine A. Moore, whose designs have graced the walkways of Steeplechase and the Kentucky Derby, as well as stylish brunches and exclusive affairs.

After guests had visited and shopped, Haley Vance and Honorary Chair Jay Wellons, representatives of Steeplechase beneficiary Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, took the stage. Together, they thanked guests for attending the evening, one of the many events leading up to Steeplechase. They also described the important work of the pediatric hospital, such as comprehensive services for patients with cancer, trauma, various diseases, developmental disorders, general surgical needs and more. They noted that the hospital is one of the top facilities in the country and has been ranked the “no. 1 children’s hospital in Tennessee”

by U.S. News and World Report, among many other accolades.

The evening was also an opportunity for attendees to mingle with the Nfocus Steeplechase Style Contest judges: Bentley Caldwell, Mary Huddleston and Carson Love. These judges have been given the difficult task of finding the most fashionable racegoers at Steeplechase. It was clear that excitement was building for the race day.

enterstone’s eighth annual Reclaiming Lives Luncheon, held recently at Four Seasons Nashville, was a capital success. The ballroom was filled to capacity for what proved to be an intimate and inspiring gathering of community leaders and supporters. Co-founders of the Reclaiming Lives Luncheon — as well as current and immediate past regional board chairs, respectively — Dana Oman and Kelly Crockett welcomed 430 guests to the luncheon, and this year’s co-chairs Rob Stevens and Cynthia Arnholt encouraged everyone to enjoy the food and fellowship while also considering liberally donating to Centerstone’s Foundation, a very worthy cause.

Centerstone’s noble purpose is to provide life-changing mental health care to people across the globe, and proceeds from this event go directly to patient care.

After lunch, Centerstone’s Regional CEO Ben Middleton introduced the keynote speaker: Dr. Henry Cloud, a clinical psychologist and New York Times best-selling author of 45 books, including the iconic Boundaries, all of which have sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Dana and Kelly, both ardent fans of Dr. Cloud’s work, have wanted to secure the acclaimed leadership expert for their keynote since the inception of the luncheon in 2015. As fate would have it, Cynthia had a connection with Dr. Cloud, and she made their dreams come true. “[We] wanted an event that educates the public about mental health, and the genuine need and response has been amazing.

We get calls after every luncheon from people looking to find help for themselves or loved ones,” said Dana. “We want to destigmatize mental health concerns,” Kelly added. “We are passionate about making sure all people in our region have access to the care they need for healing and for hope.” Dana and Kelly’s insight eight years ago has sharply come to fruition in our community: Centerstone’s phones are most definitely ringing, and — through the efforts of their staff and Reclaiming Lives Luncheon donors — the calls never go unanswered.

ithin The Factory at Franklin, Liberty Hall is usually bright, courtesy of lights from both string and stage. On this particular evening, though, the lights dimmed, transforming Liberty Hall into a sultry, velvetdraped supper club where guests were immersed in the genius combination of Bob Fosse and Studio Tenn Theatre Company.

A chorus of “Hey, big spender! This is a fund-raiser!” rang out and enticed patrons to the first photo opportunity: Belmont students wearing their Fosse-finest and belting lyrics from Sweet Charity. Past another interactive photo station — Damn Yankeesthemed — guests discovered a buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres from Catering & Events by Suzette alongside a pair of celebrity criminals in Chicago’s picturesque Cook County Jail cell.

Life is a cabaret; complete with bowler hats and finger snaps, Fosse’s distinctive style was rooted in nuance and economic bursts of movement. While Fosse’s motions were compact, he knew how to dream big, and — much like Studio Tenn and the Turner Theater — Fosse knew how to make a reality out of those big dreams. Studio Tenn draws a rich combination of talent from Nashville and Broadway to bring classic stage works to life and to provide innovative and inspirational educational programs to Middle Tennessee.

Managing Director Todd Morgan and Artistic Director Patrick Cassidy invited 2023’s Legacy Award recipients, Jake and Emily Speck, to say a few words. As Studio Tenn Theatre Company’s founding president and managing director, Jake fondly reminisced on the company’s early days and how far this program has come in just over two decades. Emily, herself a former company member and choreographer, expressed the couple’s excitement at being both back in Nashville and able to collaborate with Studio Tenn once more.

Bakari King led off the production with Pippin’s “Magic to Do,” and Carrie Manolakos stunned with her rendition of Cabaret’s “Maybe This Time.” The entire company, jazz hands and all, was electric. One Night Only raised over $160,000 for Studio Tenn Theatre Company, and the enraptured audience departed, eager for the company’s upcoming seasons.

Flawless The Nashville Children’s Theatre hosts A Grand Night, fit for a queen

ords and ladies made their way in royal style to the Nashville Children’s Theatre’s A Grand Night — The Queen’s Ball. Guests were greeted by royals outfitted directly from the pages of Bridgerton who posed for photos as revelers arrived. Champagne and cocktails were passed through the room as guests paid homage to the Queen of the evening, and all snacked on regal hors d’oeuvres prepared by The Clean Plate Club. Partygoers also enjoyed perusing the silent auction table, which held many treasures fit for royalty.

After the reception, all were invited to take their seats for dinner. It was clear the supporters of the Nashville Children’s Theatre are a tight-knit group; while the crisp salad and delicious dinner were served, many guests visited friends’ tables or stopped to say hello as they journeyed to their seats. This year, there were a record number of guests, so plenty of hellos and hugs were made throughout the room.

Once entrees were cleared, all were invited onto the theater’s stage for the entertainment and dessert. The entertainment for the evening was Mykal Kilgore, whose album A Man Born Black debuted at #2 on the iTunes R&B charts. He sang, joked with the audience and ended his set with the Grammynominated “Let Me Go.” After Mykal’s performance, it was time for an energetic live auction. The royals — actors stationed throughout the room — joined the audience onstage to read touching letters that students who experienced the Children’s Theatre had written about the actors. The letters perfectly illuminated the impact that the arts have on students and why the funds raised this evening were so important: to keep the Nashville Children’s Theatre thriving for years to come.

he Symphony Fashion Show is one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year. The show, presented

by Gus Mayer has, for guests, a long planning process.

Each year, the Designer Kickoff Party — a not-to-be-missed event — introduces the designer’s spring looks, and orders are placed. Janice Elliott Morgan does an expert job of ensuring no two ladies wear the same outfit — if they order from Gus Mayer.

The evening before the big show, friends and fashion lovers joined together at the Patrons Party to celebrate the most glamorous night of the year. Hosted by Dana and David Curtis and Dione and Justin DeWitte in the newly completed home of Lyn and Steve Cates, the evening was a beautiful example of what guests could anticipate for the main event. Co-chairs Mary Morgan Ketchel and Lisa Manning were stunning models in their Brandon Maxwell dresses: Mary Morgan wore a Wisteria taffeta strapless dress and Lisa wore a pink and orange sheath dress with a ruffle flounce hem. Executive Chair Sandra Lipman was flawless in a Brandon Maxwell design as well, a mint kaleidoscope prism floral silk printed shirt and pant.

Delicious and perfectly sized bites were enjoyed as guests chatted with designer Brandon Maxwell who graciously posed for photos. The cocktail of the evening was the special Hawaiian Punch cocktail.

Nashville Symphony President and CEO Alan Valentine thanked everyone for their generous support. Funds raised from the Symphony Fashion Show go to support the Nashville Symphony’s groundbreaking Accelerando initiative. This program prepares and mentors young musicians with diverse ethnic backgrounds in their pursuit of higher education and careers as professional musicians. As the sun set on the evening, excitement built and it was clear guests eagerly anticipated the beautiful show the following day, as well as the special emcee: Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth.

n a stunning evening in early spring, hundreds of women donned their best looks for the Symphony Fashion Show, presented by Gus Mayer. This year’s co-chairs, Mary Morgan Ketchel and Lisa Manning, invited internationally celebrated designer Brandon Maxwell to Music City. His designs have graced runways and red carpets for almost a decade and are beloved by celebrities the world over.

The evening began with an elegant donor reception in the front lobby of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Guests were greeted with a seemingly endless stream of servers accessorized with shining silver trays of Champagne. The room was filled with music from a string quartet positioned in the middle of the room, perfectly illuminating the purpose-driven mission of the evening — to support the Nashville Symphony and their community outreach programs like Accelerando. A groundbreaking music education program, Accelerando supports students of diverse backgrounds to achieve their goal of continued education in music. Many throughout Nashville have ascended to careers in music performance because of the mentorship received through Accelerando and Nashville Symphony’s similar programs. In the courtyard, the pageantry continued as guests mingled in the brilliant, early evening sunlight.

Once guests were seated, the show began, and emcee Kristin Chenoweth welcomed guests, sharing stories about her time in Nashville. She then introduced Brandon Maxwell as models appeared in his latest designs. His Fall 2023 Collection is a harmony of muted browns, navies, grays and ivories that offer chic style while complementing the reality of everyday life. Gracing the stage were pieces adorned with peplum waists, trumpet sleeves, tube tops and more.

After the exciting show, a string quartet from the Nashville Symphony stole the runway to perform recognizable Broadway tunes, and after their brief interlude, Kristin Chenoweth took the stage to wow the audience with songs like “I Could Have Danced All Night.” She then invited a young lady from the young performers program at Oklahoma’s Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center to join her in an incredible rendition of Wicked’s “For Good.” At the conclusion of the evening, Kristin announced the 2024 co-chairs to be Emily Humphreys and Tracy Frist. After the performance, guests shared their favorite Fall 2023 looks over a delicious buffet dinner.

Loving Life Fully Reaching New Heights Luncheon supports those affected by addiction

he 2023 Reaching New Heights Luncheon benefiting The Women’s Program at Cumberland Heights was held recently at Hillwood Country Club and enjoyed an amazing turnout of 330 supporters. In 2011, board members Lake Eakin and Leslie Dabrowiak — along with then-CMO Martha Flanagan — redesigned the original Recovery Breakfast for Women to the Reaching New Heights Luncheon. Since that time, this event has raised over $1 million to provide scholarships and program support for women battling substance use disorder.

Guests arrived on a beautiful spring day and were ushered to tables decorated with spring flowers and colorful confetti. A scrumptious lunch was served, and the program immediately began showcasing incredible women who were more than willing to share their testimonies of how the disease of addiction had affected their lives. Chair Jennifer Erickson welcomed everyone and introduced 13-year-old Anne-Marie Dougall, who played and sang her own heart-rending composition on losing her mother to addiction at the age of 7 and on Anne-Marie’s constant hope she would return. She shared that her music helped make her recovery possible.

by Cumberland Heights CEO Jay Crosson, who gave a glowing account of her 35-year nonprofit career. After a standing ovation for Martha, the keynote speaker — author and influencer Mallory Ervin — was introduced by Channel 4 News anchor Tracy Kornet.

Mallory, in a purple feather-sleeved dress, immediately grabbed the attention of all in the room as she shared her life story: one of success gone awry, overcoming addiction, and back again to Living Fully, the name of her book, podcast and Instagram account with 915,000 followers. Guests were mesmerized by Mallory’s inspiring message. She also announced that for a $25 donation to The Women’s Program, she would make a video testimony available to those who were unable to attend in person. “I want to share my story of recovery, my newly found way to live. I want to shout it from the rooftop,” she declared. And really, isn’t that what reaching new heights is all about?

Defying Gravity A Little Night of Music lifts up PENCIL through music and song

H

ighly anticipated every year, this year’s A Little Night of Music — its 19th rendition — was PENCIL’s most successful fundraiser to date. Guests arrived at the legendary Grand Ole Opry House and were swept into a cocktail hour accented by fabulous weather, lovely cocktails and excellent food trucks. Co-chairs Nancy Floyd, Rachel Hawksworth and Amani Kelly were gracious hosts, greeting attendees with smiles as they pointed guests toward the silent auction items and wine pull before heading into the Opry House for the program.

PENCIL President & CEO Angie Adams welcomed guests, reminding them that this would be her last Little Night as PENCIL staff. Angie is transitioning out of leadership in spring 2024, so she asked that donors make this evening extra special, opening their hearts and checkbooks wider than her wildest dreams.

PENCIL, which stands for Public Education Needs Community Involvement & Leadership, links community resources to Metro Nashville Public Schools, helping young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. Since its establishment in 1982, PENCIL has been the Nashville community’s go-to resource provider for MNPS’ more than 80,000 students. The organization offers community-school partnerships and teacher externships; dedicated volunteers also supply tangible resources such as experiential learning opportunities, caring adult mentors, and crucial school supplies so every student and teacher has the basic tools he or she needs.

Singer-songwriter Adia Victoria serenaded the audience with her evocative lyrics and acoustic set. Finally, the show-stopping Kristin Chenoweth performed, stunning with her legendary sweeping vocals and a feathery black dress. The award-winning actress and singer is known to be a passionate supporter of charities with a lifelong mission of cultivating arts education.

This energizing and inspiring evening raised $58,800 on the Opry House stage for PENCIL’s core programs, ensuring support for Metro Nashville Public Schools will continue with strength. In total, PENCIL raised more than $369,000 through this event in support of their mission. Public education is everyone’s business, proven by the generosity shown at this event, and guests left with buoyed spirits as they looked forward to next year’s Little Night.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation hosts an evening to fight Parkinson’s disease

F

or its inaugural event in Nashville, A Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s, benefiting The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), was a smashing success. Over 500 advocates for those living with Parkinson’s disease were brought together for a wonderful evening of dining, music and laughter to raise money to fund research to eradicate the disease. “Country Thing” is a riff on “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s,” the Foundation’s annual gala and one of New York’s highest-profile philanthropic events. Kimberly Schlapman, member of country music’s Little Big Town, whose mom lives with Parkinson’s disease, realized the opportunity to bring a similar idea to Nashville — with a Music City twist.

On an early spring evening, The Fisher Center at Belmont University was a spectacular backdrop as guests arrived and enjoyed a cocktail or two before dinner. The evening was made possible by event title sponsor The Tennessee Titans and the co-chairs: Tracy Pollan and Michael J. Fox; Adi and Sean Brock; Virginia and Richard Fitzgerald; Kimberly and Steve Schlapman; and Katherine and Jay Williams. Dinner was presented by Nashville’s adopted son and chef of Audrey, Sean Brock. During dinner, MJFF’s CEO and Co-Founder Deborah W. Brooks offered words of hope in a “new era in Parkinson’s research.” Scientists have discovered a new tool in the fight against Parkinson’s in a key pathology of the disease: abnormal alpha-synuclein — known as the “Parkinson’s protein” — in brain and body cells.

Through this biomarker, there exists a new potential: one where every person living with Parkinson’s may be able to experience improved treatments — and the newly diagnosed may live their lives symptom-free.

After dinner, guests moved into the auditorium for an evening of outstanding entertainment from top performers. Brad Paisley’s acoustic set included “She’s Everything,” “Ticks” and “I’m Gonna Miss Her.” Kimberly Schlapman spoke openly about how Parkinson’s disease has impacted her family, and Little Big Town performed hits including “Rich Man,” “Girl Crush,” “Boondocks” and “Friends of Mine.” Other guests included Kimberly Williams-Paisley, singer-songwriter Caitlyn Smith, comedian Nate Bargatze and Parkinson’s advocate Sebastian Krys.

uests hurried to the Broadway Ballroom in the Omni Nashville Hotel, excited for the opportunity to support a star dancer and a wonderful cause, all in the same event. This year’s Dancing for Safe Haven was a fun-filled evening of dinner and a lively Dancing with the Stars-style competition, chaired by Harry Allen, Kearstin Patterson, Candice Reed and Shane Tarleton. After a bustling cocktail hour and red carpet photo-op, patrons were invited by the evening’s hosts, Danielle Breezy and Shawn Parr, to sit and enjoy a beautiful three-course meal, provided by the Omni.

Pat McDonald was announced as the recipient of the 2023 Hero Award. Pat deeply and wholeheartedly invests in Safe Haven’s mission, and her impact is woven into the fabric of the organization’s history. After her standing ovation calmed, Pat — the embodiment of a Safe Haven hero — joked, “If you’ve been doing this since 1984, you can’t be young, but you do have to like the people you work with in order to do it for 39 years.”

A dear friend to Safe Haven’s staff and a loving supporter for families, Pat remains a steadfast donor and volunteer.

Dominique Burns, speaker for this year’s Mission Moment, left not a dry eye in the house as she recounted all that Safe Haven had done for her family, encouraging many to participate in the paddle-raise and donate to this fantastic organization.

Once dinner and the silent auction concluded, the longawaited competition kicked off. Six star dancers were paired with ballroom instructors to compete, and each pair performed for a panel of three judges and a perennially sold-out audience.

Judges Heather Byrd, Joshua Mundy and Shabaz Ujima had a difficult decision before them, as did the audience. After much deliberation, the trio decided that Sandi Borchetta had claimed a second award — Judges’ Favorite — beyond Fundraising Favorite. The audience voted for the high-energy Gerell Webb as Audience Favorite. Congratulations and bravo to all!

This year’s record-breaking attendance raised a whopping $1.29 million to help Safe Haven serve more than 300 local families experiencing homelessness in 2023, and guests departed, eagerly awaiting next year’s event.

Chronic Love at JDRF Promise Gala Funding and finding a cure for type 1 diabetes

T

he Omni Nashville Hotel’s Broadway Ballroom was inundated with guests of Nashville’s JDRF Tennessee Promise Gala, enjoying the cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres as they surveyed a myriad of silent auction items before the rest of the program.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) works to improve lives and accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Attendees and volunteers celebrated a black-tie evening of hope and inspiration in support of their shared goal: a world without type 1 diabetes.

A seated dinner was catered by the Omni Nashville, offering an innovative menu — one which guests viewed “through the eyes of type 1 diabetes.” The menu featured commentary like how many carbs can I cut without dressing? regarding the salad.

At the bottom of this creative menu, guests were reminded of the reason for the evening as blood sugar and the effects of this meal were calculated: Now for the math …. I’m ready for a cure.

I’m so tired of doing this!

Trisha Yearwood performed, pausing mid-set to honor Sarah Trahern, CEO of the Country Music Association, for her longtime efforts — even prior to her own type 1 diagnosis in 2019. After Trisha’s fabulous performance, the highlight of the evening was the Fund A Cure auction and paddle raise. With three simultaneous galas across Tennessee, the evening aimed to raise $2.2 million.

Extravagant items were up for live auction including a Nashville Predators Suite Night hosted by Terry Crisp, a weeklong stay in Italy’s Altabella La Pietra, and a priceless bottle of Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23-Year. The lot who stole the show was Bruce, a four-month-old yellow British Labrador puppy from Duckhill Kennels — an adorable, priceless acquisition for a very lucky home.

Thanks to the generosity and support from guests, donors and volunteers, the trio of events was a huge success, raising over $2.5 million in support of a world without type 1 diabetes.

In Service Tiffany Circle Spring Gathering shines a light on service to others

O

n a beautiful spring evening, guests were welcomed to the home of Michael and Rowena Cuffe to honor and raise funds for the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle. As she had risked her own life to bring critical supplies and support to soldiers on the front lines, Civil War nurse Clara Barton — nicknamed the “Angel of the Battlefield” — founded the American Red Cross in 1881 with the purpose of helping others in their most desperate hour.

In 2006, Clara’s legacy — then 125 years old — was extended through Tiffany Circle: a group of women philanthropists who raise crucial funds to support the Red Cross and its mission.

This year alone the American Red Cross has supported 1,965 families with disaster relief.

As partygoers mingled throughout the home, they enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Charles Hunter III, sips of wine and Champagne, and visiting with friends. On this special evening, guests were introduced to speaker and special guest Michael Jordan — not that one. This particular Michael Jordan served as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, having joined the Marines just after his 18th birthday. He was deployed to Desert Storm, and after the events of 9/11, he was deployed to the Iraq War. He currently works as the Vice President of Humanitarian Services for the American Red Cross for the Pacific Division. On this evening, he reminded everyone not only of the Red Cross mission — to “alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies…” — but also of being in service to others. Michael drove home that it is more important now than it has ever been to remember our calling to serve others above ourselves, just as Clara and other battlefield nurses did over 150 years ago. They set aside their differences and put their own lives on the line to help save others.

Michael concluded his speech to rousing applause. Many left feeling that the evening was over too soon.

t was a rosé kind of day for the second annual Warner Parks Spring Luncheon as 300 patrons enjoyed their choice of bubbly and Edwin Warner Park from the lovely terrace of Warner Parks Nature Center. Friends of Warner Parks Executive Director Jenny Hannon greeted guests and encouraged all to revel in the beauty of the gorgeous springtime weather; this luncheon raises funds for the maintenance, beautification and conservation of Percy and Edwin Warner Parks.

This, however, was an extra special day, celebrating the newly reimagined Nature Play campus — and its official opening to the public — with a ceremonious ribbon cutting.

This event has grown exponentially in just one short year.

Not only were there about 100 more attendees, but co-chairs Cathy Grier, Whitney Topping and Jodie Lawton decided to host their luncheon adjacent to the new play area so all could have a bird’s-eye view of the long-awaited space. As the space celebrates aerial insectivores, guests received a literal bird’s-eye view. Picture children playing as feathered friends soar above their heads enjoying their new nest neighborhoods, a focal point of the expansion.

Nashville’s beloved Tara Armistead served as designer and architect of the outdoor area, with assistance from Denverbased Sarah Konradi, an internationally known landscape architect and champion of nature play for children. Sarah was also the keynote speaker for this al fresco event. While her résumé is quite impressive, more so may be her belief in the importance of rich, imaginative play for children. Her entire adult life has been devoted to creating natural environments, developing children’s sense of wonder while empowering them to become stewards of nature.

As Sarah concluded her speech, she noted that the ribbon had only been cut a few minutes and there were already children playing in the pavilion, running over bridges and giggling on benches. Purple martins soared overhead, flitting from one gourd-home to another. This is what makes our Warner Parks so special, and that is certainly something to celebrate. Let’s all raise our glasses to toast this Spring Luncheon continuing for many years to come.

hile the Nashville housing market continues to move at a mind-bogglingly mad pace, Nfocus found eight homes to delight and inspire for 2023’s Homes of Distinction. Readers were invited to join Nfocus as we celebrated the May issue release in style at our annual Homes of Distinction cocktail party, hosted at one of this year’s carefully selected, multimillion-dollar luxury residences: 6425 Currywood Drive.

Modern homes are being built with longevity and legacy in mind, and layouts that were once defined by closed-off rooms have now opened into welcoming, inclusive spaces for family and friends. Landon Development, builder of the West Meade Farms home, understands that lifestyle-focused design plays a critical role in creating a true sense of home and well-being.

After guests passed a fabulous McLaren and a sleek Lamborghini, the front door — an 8-foot-tall slab of oak — pivoted to reveal the open-concept family and dining room, ideal for hosting family, friends and Nfocus readers. Once they had stepped through the grand entrance, guests enjoyed an offering of passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as they strolled through the expansive space.

The designer, chef-inspired kitchen played host to G Catering, and the temperature-controlled wine room — thoughtfully stocked by Fumana Wine — showcased the marriage of design and technology needed for the modern wine collector. Stepping out-of-doors revealed a stunning oasis. The broad, covered patio offered plentiful space for mingling and chatting, particularly around the beautiful fireplace. The gunite pool looked tempting, but tastings offered by Black Sheep Tequila distracted and delighted.

Custom millwork, fine textures and high-end appointments enhanced the luxurious space, and the combination of transitional architecture and contemporary edge resulted in a versatile layout that amplifies the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Iroquois Steeplechase A look back at a traditional way to spend the second Saturday in May As we celebrate 30 years of Nfocus, we have asked our friends in the community — many of whom have been with us since the beginning — to tell their story in their own words. Throughout the year, readers will hear from those who have graced our pages and supported our stories.

This month, we reached out to a dear friend of Nfocus, Gloria Houghland, to discuss 30 years of Iroquois Steeplechase and the evolution of Steeplechase weekend.

As a native Nashvillian and mother of two daughters whose family helped found the Iroquois Steeplechase, there has never been a doubt where we and so many others would be on the second Saturday in May. In fact, for 82 years, hatted horse lovers have gathered — rain or shine — at the pristine racetrack on the grounds of the beautiful Percy Warner Park. The fabled stories are too numerous to mention, but what has remained a constant is the enthusiasm for world-class horses and their jockeys, as well as spirited cheering from more than 25,000 spectators in attendance.

In earlier years, the pageantry of the Steeplechase weekend was a little different than it is now; in fact, it was more like a marathon. There was always a Friday night soirée, the Calcutta, held at someone’s home where syndicates of racing enthusiasts collaborated on whose horse might win each race. On Saturday morning, the Houghland family started race day bright and early, entertaining a large contingent of friends and fellow horse aficionados. Billowing white tents were set up on the front lawn of Bright Hour Farm, round tables held centerpieces of blue and yellow floral arrangements — the racing colors of Bright Hour Farm — and a hearty brunch would be served in anticipation of the long, full day ahead.

Around noon, guests would gather in the meadow boxes at Percy Warner Park with sterling silver cups, overflowing picnic baskets of luncheon delicacies and coolers filled with champagne, mint juleps and sweet tea to cheer on their favorite horses. There would be an equally large group gathered “on the hill” overlooking the track.

After the races, patrons would hurry home for a quick change into long black or white gowns for the ladies and black tie — or dashing scarlet hunt coats — for the men. Then they were away again, off to Belle Meade Country Club for the elegant and stunning Hunt Ball, where attendees danced the night away. In fact, one hostess was known for transporting her guests in a decked-out horse van — complete with comfy chairs and a mobile bar — to her renowned Hunt Ball afterparty! The next morning, which came all too soon, it was off to brunch to thank and bid adieu all out-of-town visitors. No one wanted the long, memorable weekend to end, but everyone needed a well-deserved nap.

Fast-forward and now everything about the Iroquois Steeplechase has grown.

In 1981, Calvin Houghland led the Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation through its evolution to a nonprofit that supports local organizations, most notably the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Henry Hooker took over in 1991 with Calvin heading the board of trustees. More boxes were added to the grounds, and a plethora of catered lunch options were offered for participants.

Calvin’s daughter, Sara Jo Houghland Gill, served as the first woman on the race committee and now serves as trustee emeritus. “I think people love the race for so many reasons. It’s such a magnificent tradition, and it’s known and respected internationally,” says Sara Jo who, by the way, has never missed a single year. And you shouldn’t either!

Alice Campbell and Robert Brackenbury first met in New York City in 2013, and Robert proposed in August 2022 in the backyard of a Nashville house which the couple was renovating. They married in February 2023 at a private club in Palm Beach, Florida, in a Mizner-designed courtyard under blooming pink bougainvillea and hanging paper lanterns — giving the evening an ethereal glow. The early-evening ceremony took place before a floral arch of coral, hot pink and white roses, blue and white hydrangea, and delphinium.

Todd Jones, retired senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, officiated. He invoked the late grandparents of the bride, Alice and Henry Hooker, and spoke of gratitude and giving. The Encore Chamber Players — on violin, cello, trumpet and viola — performed classical works by Handel and Bach, and two vocalists enhanced the evening with selections from Puccini.

The bride wore a Vera Wang gown of guipure lace and a family heirloom veil of rose point lace.

She carried a cascading bouquet of orchids, stephanotis, gardenias, roses and freesia.

The wedding party consisted of siblings of the bride or groom — Eileen Hart, John Campbell IV, Christopher Hart and Alice Brackenbury — as well as the bride's niece and nephew. Other groomsmen were Philippe de Croÿ-Solre and James Leon Clark Benn. The bridesmaids wore coral gowns by Olia Zavozina and carried pink and coral roses.

After cocktails, a seated dinner featured a cold seafood trio followed by chicken á l'orange with bigarade sauce and Boursin polenta. Each guest received a miniature three-tiered chocolate cake, served on a plate inscribed with the bride's new monogram in chocolate sauce. A spun-sugar basket held peppermint ice cream, accompanied by a small, warm pot of chocolate sauce.

Page & Windrow helped plan the event, and The Sultans, a wedding ensemble from Boston, played classic hits throughout the evening. After the couple departed on a decorated golf cart amid a canopy of sparklers, guests enjoyed late-night coconut cake and a piano bar overlooking Lake Worth.

Following a wedding trip to Antigua, the newlyweds will divide their time between Nashville and London, England. An alumna of Vanderbilt University and a CFA charterholder, Alice is a solutions specialist at Built Technologies; Robert holds a B.A. from London School of Economics, M.A. from Columbia University and law degree from University of Law in London. Parents are Lisa Hooker Campbell and John Palmer Campbell III of Nashville, and Shane Ellison Brackenbury and Richard Charles Brackenbury of London.
