Whether choosing pops of color, neutral tones or basic black, we use fashion to express ourselves and tell our story.

Whether walking the red carpet at Swan Ball or stepping out at the Grand Ole Opry, Nashvillians have always had a fashion sense all their own, walking a juxtaposing line between adoration for New York and European designers and for something local with theatrical flair.

Make a Statement Mclaine Richardson tells stories through timeless jewelry Since her youth, native Nashvillian Mclaine Richardson has loved to wear, gift and display the beauty she creates. Driven by artistic desire and a thirst for knowledge, Mclaine pursued a customized degree — in both business and design — at Furman University and studied abroad at Lorenzo de’Medici in Florence, Italy.

Creativity flows when Mclaine is excited by what she’s doing, and while abroad, she discovered her love for jewelry design during a metalsmith class. After returning to Nashville, Mclaine soldered this passion at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Art Studios and refined her skills as a production metalsmith at Margaret Ellis Inc. — a beloved 40-year-old Nashville brand.

Since acquiring Margaret Ellis Inc. in 2013, Mclaine has helmed Margaret Ellis Jewelry as owner and designer, honoring her mentor’s name and heritage artisan brand. Now often referred to as ME, each timeless piece of jewelry is handcrafted-toorder in Mclaine’s Berry Hill studio, using traditional metalsmith techniques to create a classic, yet distinctly ME, style.

What did you initially want to be when you grew up? I always knew I would create.

In kindergarten, I wanted to be a “paintist” — to make something different.

What inspired you to design jewelry, and how did you go about learning the craft?

I remember shopping for beads at the Beaded Bungalow across from my current studio, stringing beads for hours during day camps and making friendship bracelets after school. While studying abroad in Italy, I took my first metalsmith class and took even more once I was home. I refined my skills as a production metalsmith for Margaret.

What were some challenges you faced as you took on leadership at ME? I took over a 30-year-old business at 26 years old. Thanks to Margaret, it was a surprisingly seamless transition, but to be a small business in Nashville is challenging. We were priced out of our old space, bought and quickly renovated our new studio, and then COVID happened. All of that has shaped ME into who we are today: I’m more confident in my design and in my small-business abilities.

Margaret always thought she’d lock the door and walk away when she retired, but she entrusted me with her legacy. I honor Margaret and our long-term customers by embracing her name and design aesthetic, but I instill my voice into the brand, too, and feel privileged to do what I love.

What upcoming jewelry and design trends excite you? Our new spring collection is very sculptural, inspired by punctuation — which seems appropriate for jewelry!

What collection did you have the most fun creating? My best work always comes from a place of truth and authenticity. I design with our collectors in mind and push boundaries with our one-of-a-kind and custom pieces. SOL Summer 2017 stands out as one of my favorite collections: Its bold contemporary simplicity was inspired by jewelry designer Elsa Peretti, artist Joan Miró and vintage Margaret.

What’s your favorite type of jewelry to create or wear? One-of-a-kind rings: The stones dictate the design, so each one is truly unique.

They remind me of handmade bonbons — I have collected quite a few for myself!

What does the future hold for you and for Margaret Ellis Jewelry? 2023 is a big year as we celebrate 40 years of Margaret Ellis and 10 years as ME. Nashville and the retail industry have rapidly evolved, so I’m always trying new ideas to keep moving forward.

It’s the small business dance! This small heritage brand allows me to have close personal relationships with our collectors, and I will continue to nurture and build those relationships while providing classic heirloom-quality artisan jewelry.

What legacy would you like to leave in this community? As a third-generation Nashvillian, I’m honored to carry on the legacy of a 40-year-old Nashville business.

ME jewelry will outlast us all as it’s worn and passed down for generations to come, so my hope is that both ME and I are long remembered for making others feel special.

Put some spring in your step Doth mine eyes deceive me? The flowers are blooming.

The grass is an electric shade of green. The days are longer. Spring has sprung! Gents, here are five spring wardrobe trends to get you started!

Chore Jackets: Fellas, trade in your Patagonia vest and North Face fleece! Please! Chore jackets are a versatile and practical article for every man’s closet. Made with durable materials, they are perfect for outdoor activities while still classic enough to be dressed up. Layer them with a hoodie for cooler evenings, or substitute your suit jacket for a different twist on the spring wedding suit. No matter the task you throw at it, the chore jacket handles it! (See what I did there?)

Muted Polos: I love the subtlety of more muted colors; people typically think of big, bold colors for springtime.

That’s great — if your mother still dresses you for Easter Sunday. These aren’t your mother’s polos, though! With a nice pair of chinos, these polos will give you that pop of springtime without making you look like the candy aisle at Eastertime.

Green Chinos: Any guy can wear a navy or khaki chino, but you can set yourself apart from the crowd by going green! Dress these up with a blazer, button-down and dress shoes or lean more casual with a white sneaker, tshirt and denim jacket.

White Sneakers: Speaking of sneakers, embrace the white, low-top sneaker. Why? Timelessness: Variations of white sneakers have been around for decades. Compatibility: They go with everything. You can wear them with jeans, shorts, chinos, dress pants or joggers — they look wonderful regardless. Do mind the puddles, though.

Neutral Plaid Shirts: Neutral plaid button-downs are another great staple in a versatile wardrobe. The muted plaid pattern adds a level of interest and texture to an outfit without being too flashy or bold. Pair one with chinos or denim, toss on a chore jacket as a third piece, and you’re ready for any occasion.

Her Style

Sheer class and margarita vibes I’ve always thought of the term “fashion” as referring to an industry, a unifying experience, a collaboration of great minds and the tides of trends that come and go. The term “style,” on the other hand, is something I believe to be more innate — a unique part of each of us. I really like how Lauren Hutton phrased it: “Fashion is something that’s offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.”

As a stylist, it’s part of my job to nurture and prioritize my clients’ personal style above all else, but the importance of trends can’t be ignored. Fashion shifts, while affected by many factors, tend to reflect our current place in history. Acknowledging and even participating in fashion trends can connect us to the present, helping a wardrobe feel inspired and current.

With that said, I want to slap a warning label on all information surrounding trends: Not all designs are for everyone, and there should never be any pressure to adapt one you don’t love into your own wardrobe. One of the beautiful things about fashion is its clockwork nature: If you don’t resonate with this season’s aesthetic, there is always a new batch right around the corner.

Typically, my rule of thumb when identifying a look is: Can it be spotted on the runways three or more times? With that in mind, I’ve done this year’s homework for you, so let’s check out some of the top trends from the shows of Spring-Summer ’23 Fashion Month: Sheer: Transparent and ethereal fabrics were seen throughout many designers’ shows. While this might sound like an intimidating or overtly sexy vibe, it can easily be styled in playful, more approachable ways.

Tassels & Fringe: This makes my Nashville heart so happy!

Fringe and tassels aren’t just for ’90s country stars anymore.

We’re seeing fringe on tops, jackets — even wedding gowns.

Hooded Dresses: We saw this design emerge last fall, and it appears to be going strong through spring. I love the element of drama and Grace Jones’ influence.

Lime Green: Ready to match your margarita? Drink in this trend by going all-in with a monochromatic set, or — if you’re a little hesitant — take a sip by more subtly adding an electric bag or shoe.

Time to try out your own trendspotting. Over the next few months, I bet you’ll notice some of these patterns in your favorite retail shops, too.

On the Right Track Pullman Standard opens to honor a railroading past When first preparing to open a cocktail bar in Nashville’s famed Cummins Station, Greg Hooper, the owner of Pullman Standard, began a deep dive into the history of the building and the area around it.

Completed in 1907 as an industrial warehouse and commercial center, Cummins Station was strategically located near Union Station and the L&N railroad tracks. “I immersed myself in the history of this building and the old railroad — all made possible by the Pullman Company,” says Greg, “and then Pullman bought Standard Steel [in 1930] to become Pullman-Standard. I read that and realized: ‘That is the name of a cocktail bar if I ever heard one — an award-winning cocktail bar.’”

Bar Director Amy Van Buren, well known in Nashville for crafting innovative cocktails, is the creative force behind the beverage menu for Pullman Standard, which opened in January.

The drinks have monikers that conjure up images of luxury train cars, such as 'The Kid in Upper 4' — aged rum, crème de cassis, lime, ginger and Peychaud’s Bitters. Another, dubbed 'Safety and Comfort,' taking a phrase out of an early-1900s marketing campaign, consists of tequila reposado, papaya, brown sugar, vanilla, lime and Angostura bitters. According to Greg, the cocktails are “the belle of the ball.”

That may be, but it doesn’t mean the food isn’t important as well. “If you get cocktails, but all you have to eat are some chips, it brings the entire experience down,” says Greg. Enter RJ Cooper — James Beard Award-winning chef of Saint Stephen and Acqua fame — to design the commercial kitchen and create the menu. It features light bites and shareable items such as dry-aged beef tartare; duck confit tacos; and American wagyu beef with aerated cheddar and onion jam on puffed bread. And there are chips — served with onion dip and the optional addition of Kaluga caviar.

Remick Architecture and Denver-based interior design firm Xan Creative leaned heavily into the area’s past, embracing and preserving the building’s original details such as the exposed brick and concrete columns and floors.

A classic deco print wallpaper of gold and dark green sets the scene. The concrete floors — now sporting a brilliant, polished sheen — are dotted with oriental rugs, tufted emerald velvet sofas, charcoal velvet club chairs that swivel and round wooden coffee tables. Winecolored leather banquettes line the exposed brick wall, and the original concrete columns are wrapped in walnut casings to add warmth to the industrial space.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS When guests sit down to order, there’s no QR code to scan. In keeping with Pullman Standard’s theme of bygone days, the menus are enclosed in leather covers — custom-made by artisans at Lockeland Leather in East Nashville — and secured with brass inserts to weave in one of the space’s key design elements. On this intentionality, Greg says “You get the [other senses] and then, when you sit down, this is the first thing you touch. I wanted to make sure that this was beyond reproach.”

THE DEVIL IN THE DETAILS Having worked for Intel for many years, Greg’s background in computer forensics helps him understand the importance of the little things and how they can make a world of difference. At the bar, which seats 15, black leather stools have backs for added comfort. Underneath the bar, guests will find brass hooks for handbags as well as the decidedly modern addition of electrical outlets and USB ports. Small cocktail tables are situated next to chairs, so your drink is — conveniently — never more than an arm’s length away.

PRIVATE PARTY The focal point of the intimate private room — which seats up to 15 — is a massive, stunning crystal chandelier. Tobacco-colored leather sofas and black leather club chairs atop an oriental rug are flanked by brass cocktail tables. There is a service bar, but you won’t find a TV — in plain sight, at least. It’s cleverly hidden, designed to double as an art piece. Throughout the bar, the artwork features colorful early-1900s posters and vintage drink advertisements, curated by Sai Clayton, the Frist Art Museum’s inaugural fellow.

Conversations at OZ returns for thoughtful discourse

he spirit of Parisian salons was alive and well at 2023’s Conversations at OZ. Created in 1667, the salons were an official art exhibition of Académie des BeauxArts. At these exhibitions, painters, sculptors and engravers displayed a collection of their works. On the eve of the public opening, there was a preview party — a vernissage, as this was the day the paintings were varnished — and guests were treated to works that pushed the limits of trend and status quo, sparking deeper thought and conversation.

It is no wonder that Conversations at OZ, like the salons of Paris, drew an extensive crowd of Nashvillians — thinkers and doers, activists and artists — together for an incredible evening around a table for thoughtful conversation and dinner. The evening began with a cocktail reception for donors, sponsors and table hosts. Guests mingled and visited before coming together in the main theater for a seated dinner and conversation. Co-chairs Shan Foster, Laurie Seabury, Marcia Masulla and Sherri Neal brought together an incredible group of table hosts like Seth Feman, Bobby Frist and Sean Henry to facilitate dialogue on a variety of topics such as ‘Curating the Future of Art History for Nashville,’ ‘Will the Nashville Boom Get Bigger’ and more.

Tables sold out almost immediately as guests were eager to gather in person for the first time in two years and discuss. This year’s Conversations was a terrific success, raising over $150,000 toward the mission of OZ Arts Nashville: supporting “the creation, development and presentation of significant performing and visual art works by leading artists whose contribution influences the advancement of their field.” Each show offers a complex level of themes around the artist’s vision, and OZ Arts has attracted tremendous talent as a result. This season, OZ has featured works by the hilarious Meow Meow, the stunningly beautiful A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham, and the Ukrainian indie-folk sensation DakhaBrakha.

Let’s All Go to the Lobby Touching tributes at How About Dinner & a Movie?

W

hen Nashville’s wintry winds rattle bare branches and familiar clouds constantly suggest rain, most people head indoors, asking, “What should we do tonight?” Barbara Daane is no stranger to this refrain, and she has delighted film aficionados and philanthropists for over 25 years with the rejoinder: “How about dinner and a movie?”

Universally adored, Barbara is a lifetime board member of Park Center and honorary chair of the annual fundraising affair that bears the name of her response: How About Dinner & a Movie? The Belcourt Theatre-based event has become one of Nashville’s most popular occasions as well as the signature fundraiser for Park Center, a cherished nonprofit that has served the community for more than 35 years.

This year’s event was in honor of and dedicated to the memory of the late Clare Armistead, a dear friend of Barbara’s.

Clare’s son Hunter attended in her stead this year, but Clare herself attended almost every one of Park Center’s How About Dinner & a Movie? in the past 25 years. A consummate philanthropist, her contributions to numerous causes across Middle Tennessee cannot be understated.

Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour and chatted throughout the lobby and the theater’s classic red upholstered seats while browsing the fabulous silent auction options. After guests found the perfect vantage point and snuggled into their preferred movie-watching seat, the scrumptious dinner from The Corner Market was served.

Patrons share a devoted fondness for this evening of heavily buttered popcorn, film and fun; something about the event is at once familial and familiar, and it was a lovely evening. The dinner was delicious and the movie — Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris — was heartfelt and gorgeous. Most importantly, the night provided Park Center with significant funds to continue their mission: empowering people with mental illness and substance use disorders to live and work in their communities.

Wine-d Down Wined Up! featured great wine and a greater cause

O

n the second of Pairings’ three nights of events, a jubilant crowd of wine enthusiasts — beginners and oenophiles alike — poured into City Winery for this year’s Wined Up! The event featured 29 premier West Coast vintners offering over 60 wines, and some attendees arrived with research in-hand: their personal list of must-try sips.

Dana Stoller and John Navin, husband and wife co-chairs of the weekend’s festivities, ensured that there was a wine for every palate — from crisp chablis and buttery chardonnay to dry pinot noir and jammy cabernet sauvignon. RARECAT Wines’ French Sparkling NV seemed to be a particular crowd favorite; several guests expressed their delight with the bubbly concoction to any who would listen.

Upstairs in the Collectors’ Showcase, guests enjoyed some truly extraordinary offerings from top-notch vintners like ADAMVS, Pahlmeyer Winery and Fantesca Estate & Winery.

The more intimate setting of the balcony provided not only a chance to chat leisurely with the winemakers, but also a vantage point for watching the action below.

In addition to sipping, socializing and snacking on hors d’oeuvres provided by City Winery, revelers participated in some competitive bidding for the exceptional wine lots in the silent auction. The proceeds from this sold-out event go to the Nashville Wine Auction and its local partners, bringing Nashville’s wine community together to fund the fight against cancer. This organization has raised $33 million to date, accelerating generosity through the sharing of wine.

Good company, great wine and a greater cause have been the trademark of Wined Up!, and it once again upheld its reputation as one of Nashville’s premier wine-tasting events.

Excitement was in the air as the Summit’s creators announced the launch of The Mona Lisa Foundation, created to “award scholarships, mentorships, and complimentary business and marketing services to female entrepreneurs.” The inaugural scholarship was awarded to Jessica Baladad of Feel For Your Life, an app-based tutorial to help women advocate for their health and teach them how to self-screen for breast cancer. Jessica was diagnosed with Stage 2B invasive ductal carcinoma, and after undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and much more, she started Feel for Your Life to encourage women who might not have access to screenings or other medical options. Her inspiring story went viral; through her work, not only has she been able to assist women with screening, she has also worked tirelessly on legislation supporting women’s health.

A Perfect Pairing Pairings makes a beautiful blend between Music City and California Wine Country

hat began 11 years ago as a new event for Nashville Wine Auction has blossomed into a much-anticipated, must-attend event. Pairings lives up to its moniker by pairing renowned chefs — both local and national — with top winemakers from around the world. The weekendlong series of events began on Thursday with vintner dinners in private homes, followed by Wined Up! on Friday night.

Saturday’s Pairings concludes the weekend with a silent and live auction as well as a tremendous dinner prepared by this year’s participating chefs.

Husband and wife co-chairs Dana Stoller and John Navin masterfully executed the theme of Where the Stars Align: Nashville Chefs Meet West Coast Wines. Some of Nashville’s most notable chefs — this year featuring Joe Townsend, Andrew Whitney, Kevin Ramquist and Alyssa Gangeri — worked with Loews Hotel chef Sean Strolle, each contributing a course to dinner. In addition to the excellent dishes like the buttery scallop or savory lamb burrito, California winemakers journeyed to Music City to offer their prime pairings for the evening. The dinner wines were from Domaine Carneros, CIRQ, Cornell Vineyards, Pahlmeyer and Spire Collection. Throughout dinner, guests had the opportunity to bid on fantastic items, wonderful collections of wine and dream travel destinations.

The most poignant moment of the evening came when the auctioneer, Charles Antin, shared the story of his journey with chronic myeloid leukemia. At the time of his diagnosis, there were few treatment options available. As he has battled leukemia, more treatments have become available, and he was able to be in the room with us for Pairings as a direct result of money raised by Nashville Wine Auction and organizations who similarly fund research to fight the disease. After Charles spoke, the room came alive with bidding for the “Raise the Paddle” portion of the evening, ultimately raising over $845,000 to help fight cancer.

Seasons of Love Ballet Ball celebrates the seasons

T

he beauty of the four seasons was on display at Nashville Ballet’s 34th annual Ballet Ball. Co-chairs Meera Ballal and Catherine Grace created a beautiful celebration through the theme, “Seasons of Dance” — a nod to Paul Vasterling’s ballet, Seasons. Amos Gott and his team transformed the Schermerhorn for the evening. The flora of the foyer embraced the thematic idea as guests were greeted with a soaring, 12-foot-tall tree in the lobby. Doubly wide as it was tall, its branches were covered with greenery and lavish drapes of wisteria. After the cocktail reception, guests entered Laura Turner Concert Hall to the bright sounds of chirping birdsong.

For an immersive forest experience, the hall featured panels of fabric onto which trees were projected — shifting seasonally as the evening progressed.

The delights of the senses did not end with decor. Once seated, guests were treated to a delicious pairing of dishes

by Kristen Winston and entertainment expertly executed by Nashville Ballet talent, representing each season chronologically. Beginning with spring’s pairing of a Spring Pea Soup Sip topped with crème fraîche, guests enjoyed MORGXN’s opening performance of the whimsical song “Pure Imagination.” Four courses displayed the bounty of the respective seasons, as each performance topped the one before.

This year’s Synergy Award recipient was the Tennessee Titans, a team who has striven to further the mission of the Nashville Ballet. Accepting the award on behalf of the Titans was their Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Adolpho Birch. The Tennessee Titans have worked tirelessly with the Nashville Ballet and other arts organizations, “ensuring that our Nashville community has access to the best of the fine arts.”

Most recently, the Titans have lent the talents of their mascot, T-Rac, in collaboration with community outreach programs — including a role in the beloved Nashville’s Nutcracker. The evening concluded with a vivacious Late Party and dancing to the sounds of Bizz & Everyday People.

At the Heart of It A heartening evening at the Middle Tennessee Heart Gala

E

scaping the chilly night air, a slew of well-dressed guests gathered in the ballroom of Four Seasons Nashville in support of the American Heart Association (AHA). A cocktail reception kicked off the 49th Heart Gala, and patrons eagerly anticipated an engaging program, silent and live auction, and more.

United in a shared purpose, supporters from more than 150 communities across the country attend events like the Heart Gala. Annually, these events raise the critical funds the AHA needs to ensure its work continues while celebrating the organization’s milestones, sponsors and heroes.

This year, Middle Tennessee’s Heart Gala looked different from the original plan: Co-chair Tim Wallace passed away on March 3, only a week prior to the event. Judy Fabling Wallace, Tim’s wife and fellow co-chair, held firm and insisted that the gala go on as planned — now in his memory, as he had served on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards throughout his life.

Judy honored her late husband on Saturday night by wearing Tim’s watch and celebrating their successes over the past year.

Tim is remembered as a family-oriented man, good friend and generous philanthropist, relentlessly focused on the heart of his community. In addition to his support of the AHA, Tim also supported events for Breast Cancer Awareness, Kidney Foundation and the Williamson Medical Center Foundation.

Despite the sudden loss, American Heart Association of Middle Tennessee had a record-breaking year for funds raised in the room through their live auction and Open Your Heart Moment. Through the Heart of Middle Tennessee Heart Gala campaign, the AHA celebrates its collective success in driving change, funding science and improving behaviors — no matter where, or how, they gather. The AHA takes their philanthropic efforts beyond the ballroom, working every day to help every heart.

he Belcourt Theatre’s A Red Carpet Evening was the hottest ticket in town for a fabulous way to watch Hollywood glamor at its finest. Guests arrived at the Belcourt in a colorful array of evening wear that only heightened the festive mood. As guests mingled, enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and posed for the photobooth, they were also treated to a wonderful array of silent auction items including a Parnassus Books gift bag, a beautiful quilt, a handmade coffee table, dining at City House and much more — all to raise funds to support the amazing programming of Nashville’s own Belcourt Theatre.

The Belcourt, which opened in 1925 to show silent movies, became the short-term home to the Grand Ole Opry from 1934 to 1936. Throughout its almost 100-year history, this beloved institution has been a part of the fabric of Nashville. Fastforward to this year, on a chilly March evening — A Red Carpet Evening, which might not have been possible without a dedicated team who believes in the mission “to engage, enrich and educate through innovative film programming in our historic theatre, our community and beyond.”

For the main event, guests gathered in the two theaters — as well as backstage — all of which were beautifully decorated in white by event Chair Amos Gott. From these premier locations, guests found ideal seats to enjoy more snacks and watch the 95th Academy Awards. By all accounts, the theater is back in a big way.

We stood in line, waiting our turn and hopping from foot to foot as we tried to limit the amount of time each bare foot touched the frigid, steel floor. We hugged our bodies, clothed only in our bathing suits as songs like “Twist and Shout” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.” blared through the mud room. Spirits were high, and — I discovered later — spirits were flowing. We each made our way down the stairs to an open door as the Arctic air swept in and started to take hold. Finally, as my turn came, I stepped outside onto the platform, keenly willing myself to push through to the last step. Taking a deep breath, I jumped — hanging in the air for the slimmest of seconds before I plunged into the embrace of the deep, blue arctic abyss below.

Antarctica is, for many who have not been there, an abstract.

Most picture a colorless, white void with howling winds, not dissimilar from the barren planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. Antarctica has captivated the minds of explorers for centuries. This land of Cook, Weddell and Shackleton is as imposing as it is vague; however, the challenge of discovery was too great a pull for many to resist. Located over 640 miles from the southern tips of Argentina and Chile, this land is inhabited almost exclusively by penguins with names like Chinstrap, Gentoo and Adélie. Seals, whales and more have been a siren song for those eager to uncover the secrets of this land.

But why travel there today? What is the draw that brings both scientific explorations and boatloads of tourists to this vast land in the middle of February? My “why” came when I saw Jimmy Buffett leading a tour to the Antarctic in support of protecting the world’s oceans. I thought: If the troubadour of the sea can take this journey, so can I. While adventurers look vastly different today, the impulse remains the same: the spirit of discovering the secrets of an inhospitable space that covers the southernmost point on Earth.

Booking through Belle Meade Vacations, we joined Lindblad Expeditions and their partner, National Geographic, as they offered an in-depth, immersive way to experience Antarctica. With a crew of naturalists, historians and photo experts leading lectures and excursions, the experience is both cerebral and multilayered.

A journey to South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula is no small feat as travelers must first cross the mythically difficult Drake Passage. This gateway to the land of snow and ice is considered one of the world’s most difficult passages: high winds — and the lack of land mass to interrupt the ocean’s currents — create waves that can peak at 40-feet high. While crossing the Drake Passage can be overwhelming for some, modern ships are well-equipped to help passengers manage the two-day journey. Travelers are ultimately rewarded with the breathtaking natural beauty of untouched land.

No two expeditions are alike, and each can vary wildly based on weather and landing conditions. Because the expeditions run through the summer months — when ice shelves are calving, or releasing, icebergs — ships may need to alter course slightly. Strong winds may make landing impossible, which again begs the question: Why travel to this formidable land?

On the first day of this particular journey, the first stop was at Barrientos Island — part of the South Shetland Islands. The most striking trait of this mile-long landmass is that it is ice-free and, while not inhabited by humans, is a popular breeding spot for gentoo and chinstrap penguins. A veritable sea of penguins could be seen filling the coastline, including fluffy, all-too-adorable juvenile penguins that boast more than an ounce or two of bravery and curiosity.

The following day, the excursion ventured to Croft Bay and Snow Hill Island. The sun was high in a brilliant blue sky as travelers kayaked over calm water and passed massive icebergs that loomed over us and illustrated the scale of our existence.

This is the land of Cook and Shackleton. Yet, seeing the sheer mass of the icebergs was imposing and dangerous; more than once, kayakers were warned that — while gorgeous — the icebergs could flip, trapping well-intentioned and curious guests into depths below. The imposing and beautiful ice glows an ethereal blue. On closer inspection — as small chips floated near our rubber-sided exploration boats — we found them to be clear. More than one dinner-plate-sized chip made its way back to the boat to chill a cocktail or two. The adventure continued that day as 72 brave souls threw caution to the wind and joined in a Polar Plunge, jumping into 30-degree water while clad only in bathing suits.

Highlights of the journey included a visit to Goudier Island; set in the safe harbor of Port Lockroy, Goudier Island is home to the most southerly operational post office in the world.

Established in 1944 as part of Operation Tabarin — a clandestine British plan to prevent enemy activity in Antarctica — the historic hut was used as a base for upper atmospheric research until it was abandoned in 1964. It was reopened and restored by the British Antarctic Survey in 1996, now operating as a museum (and post office) through the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. It is one of the most visited sites in Antarctica, hosting around 20,000 visitors this year alone.

Each day brought new discoveries of a land that, for many, exists in a sort of nebulous space. What brought the narrative of the journey together was a stellar group of experts that helped us grasp the wonders before us. The dedicated team members led lectures and tours to help fill in the gaps of history and paint a greater picture of understanding. The credentials of the expedition team were varied and relevant: a documentary filmmaker, photography experts and instructors, and a variety of naturalists. Intimately knowledgeable about the variety of wildlife, topography and history of the area, these experts led lectures or toured with small groups in zodiac boats. Their goal was to help travelers, whether it was to understand the geological formation of basalt columns that made up Edinburgh Hill or to identify the variety of seals or penguins that kept a cautious distance from human contact.

Throughout the adventure, wildlife was in abundance. Pods of whales curiously inspected the ship; nesting penguins could be found raising their chicks. Varieties of seals could be found lounging on beds of ice or patrolling the water for a snack of penguin as the penguin patrolled the water for a snack of krill.

It is interesting to see the collection of marine life on display when, just a few decades ago, the hunting of seals and whales was so prevalent that some species were almost annihilated.

Today, the greatest predator facing this pristine land and its inhabitants is climate change: Polar ice caps are receding at an alarming rate, and icebergs calve earlier and earlier each year. An entire generation of penguin chicks at Port Lockroy, the British scientific research station, will likely not survive the winter because of a late birthing season as climate change negatively affects their nesting grounds.

Submerged for mere seconds, I break through the surface of the water to meet the crisp, Antarctic air once more. The shock of the water and air combined internally and externally as my skin tingled and my lungs fought for air. It was a baptism of sorts: I emerged reborn with a desire to return and to protect this majestic space.

Walking the Runway

A conversation with Mary Morgan Ketchel and Lisa Manning, co-chairs of Symphony Fashion Show

I

t is no secret that Nashville has caught the attention of major fashion houses. Each year, more designers are introduced to Nashville. One of the top fashion events of the year is Symphony Fashion Show. Each year, chairs of the event, presented by Gus Mayer, invite a top designer to visit Nashville to help raise funds for the Nashville Symphony and Accelerando — a music education program offering students of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to expand their music career.

This year, Symphony Fashion Show will host internationally celebrated designer Brandon Maxwell. His designs have been seen both on the runway and on the red carpet by A-list celebrities. Tailored and well-made, his looks deliver a modern elegance. He has also recently taken on a role as a judge on Bravo TV’s Project Runway.

In addition to Brandon’s designs on the runway, the cochairs have also invited Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth to emcee the event. One of Broadway’s leading ladies, Kristin recently released her book, I’m No Philosopher, But I Got Thoughts, and will be signing copies at Parnassus Books prior to the show.

We sat down with co-chairs Mary Morgan Ketchel and Lisa Manning to talk about the event and what they are most excited about.

Lisa Manning lives in Nashville with her husband and two children. She served as the president of the board at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens from 2020–2022, during the pandemic — a challenging and rewarding experience. Lisa is presently on the board of the White House Historical Association and sits on the board of The Legion Fund, benefiting the families of 5th Group Soldiers. She has participated in the horticulture judging program for The Garden Club of America and is highly involved in various local gardening entities. In her spare time, Lisa can be found in the gardens digging in the dirt, attempting to propagate something odd, or tending to her bees.

Mary Morgan Ketchel, a Nashville native, is an alumna of the Harpeth Hall School and University of Mississippi. She is a community volunteer with a background in political fundraising and event management. Mary Morgan started her career in the Washington D.C. office of U.S. Senator Bill Frist — where she also met her husband of 21 years, Paul. They live in Nashville with their two children, Jack and Chase.

What can guests expect from this year’s Symphony Fashion Show?

Symphony Fashion Show is curated by teams of co-chairs and event designers to create one of the most anticipated annual events, full of glamour and entertainment. Guests of the 2023 Symphony Fashion Show will experience our vision of a fabulous New York City night in Nashville.

How did you come to choose Brandon Maxwell as the designer?

We wanted an innovative designer with timeless garments for the 2023 show to illustrate Nashville’s developing fashion scene. Through the leadership and expertise of Janice Elliott Morgan and Gus Mayer, we were led to Brandon’s team. Janice’s connections and expertise allow designers like Brandon Maxwell to stay interested in Nashville.

Do you have any tips for someone who’s never attended before?

Arrive on time! You don’t want to miss a minute. Ride-share if you can — we all know how downtown parking can be. When it comes to attire, we see it as an opportunity to dress your best, and maybe even outside of your comfort zone! The event is black tie, but we like to see fun colors, fabrics and patterns.

It’s a fashion show; make it fun and fashionable!

What does the money raised go to support?

For the past 18 years, Symphony Fashion Show has provided funds and support for educational programs like the Nashville Symphony’s Accelerando initiative: Accelerando offers music education for young and gifted students of diverse backgrounds looking to pursue music in college and beyond.

Lisa, why do you support the Nashville Symphony?

A symphony enhances the quality of a city, and our world-class symphony accomplishes that especially well for Nashville. It brings additional meaning to “Music City!” From classical, pop and contemporary performances, to films set to live scores, to visiting artist collaborations — the Nashville Symphony’s year-round programming has something for everyone.

Mary Morgan, what is your favorite memory from Symphony Fashion Show, and what are you most looking forward to this year?

I remember the first time I entered the courtyard to a sea of fabulous dresses. It was so much fun to pose for pictures with friends and to toast champagne as the crowd moved into Laura Turner Hall for the fashion show. The energy was electric, as it always is on this very special night! I am most looking forward to the moment the first model hits the runway. It’s such a thrill to experience a fashion show of this caliber, and I can’t wait to see Brandon step out at the end of the show as the audience applauds his incredible talent and fabulous fall designs.

Luxury Fashion A look back at 30 years of styles, trends and dressing Nashville As we celebrate 30 years of Nfocus, we have asked our friends in the community — many of whom have been with us since the beginning — to tell their story in their own words. Throughout the year, readers will hear from those who have graced our pages and supported our stories.

This month, we reached out to a dear friend of Nfocus, Janice Elliott Morgan, to discuss white-tie events, the cyclical nature of fashion trends and the Symphony Fashion Show.

When I moved to Nashville at the start of my career, I knew fashion was my passion and was fortunate to be a part of the training program at Nashville’s beloved Cain-Sloan department store. A wonderful career opportunity took me briefly out of state until I was offered the Designer Buyer position at Gus Mayer for their Nashville and Birmingham stores, and I moved back just prior to Herbert Fox’s launch of Nfocus. At Gus Mayer, we have had great success over the years as we partnered with this magazine to promote the latest fashions, our trunk shows and other events.

After reflecting on past ads and articles, it is clear: Fashion has come full circle. The daytime trends in the mid-‘90s that dominated the pages of fashion magazines and boutiques included suits, bomber jackets and cargo pants, and all are current trends today. In evening wear, the returning ‘90s trends are big sleeves, shoulder details and slip dresses. Back then, I was buying labels like Louis Féraud, Pamela Dennis and St. John, and I loved expanding Gus Mayer's evening wear section with top-selling designers like Heidi Weisel.

One of the highlights of my position is interacting with wonderful clients. I have dressed many for their child’s wedding, black-tie events and other special occasions. Dressing customers for Nashville’s two remaining white-tie events, Swan Ball and Symphony Ball, is exciting and, at times, challenging. Because of our long-standing relationships with designers, we have overcome any minor obstacles, resulting in beautifully dressed, happy clientele. I travel to New York City several times a year, and it gives me great satisfaction to spot something that I know a specific customer would love.

Gus Mayer has supported the community through the Nashville Symphony for many years by presenting the Symphony Fashion Show. We secure the featured designer and work with co-chairs and the Symphony staff to promote and produce the annually successful event. The show is a major fundraiser, providing funds for the Symphony’s educational initiatives.

It's always interesting to see fashion come back around and evolve, just as Nfocus has. Happy 30th anniversary!

Lauren Rucker and John Pustulka met while working at a Nashville pharmacy. As their friendship progressed, their love deepened, and John surprised Lauren by proposing at Liberty Common — the restaurant where they had their first date.

They married in May by the Reflecting Pool at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. Dr. Paul Lim officiated while harpist Meg Boulden and a string ensemble arranged by Craig Duncan played an array of orchestrations including Vivaldi’s “Spring” and “Princess Leia’s Theme” from Star Wars.

“Anyone planning an outdoor wedding knows the stress of wondering what the weather will be — and this was no exception,” said the bride’s mother. As the date approached and weather reports predicted storms, plans began for moving the ceremony into Cheekwood’s Historic Mansion. At the last minute,

the skies cleared, blessing attendees with the beautiful garden wedding that bride had envisioned.

Lauren wore an ivory satin gown with a portrait neckline and off-the-shoulder straps. She had seen the Jasmine Bridal design in a magazine and knew it was the one. The timing, however, was going to be tight: the dress wasn’t to arrive from overseas until a mere week before the wedding. This gave the bride some sleepless nights, so she selected a second dress just in case. Both dresses arrived on time, and Lauren wore them both, alternating her mother’s original veil and a stunning veil named “Horsehair” — a nod to Lauren’s equestrian background.

Cheekwood’s Frist Learning Center Courtyard was the site of the reception, and strings of tiny lights branched off from a chandelier in the center of the white tent. Emily Gould of Chef ’s Market catered

the dinner and included special appetizers — all of which were nods to the heritages of both bride (Austrian, African American) and groom (Korean, Polish). Whitney Opalek of Ivey Cake in Brentwood created the Chantilly wedding cake, Caprice Palmer at Enchanted Florist designed the florals, and Marcia Husband was the wedding planner.

After their wedding trip to Spain and the South of France, the couple returned to Nashville where the bride works in healthcare, and the groom is a pharmacist. Lauren graduated with a major in chemistry from Carson-Newman University, and John is an alumnus of University of Michigan with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Belmont University. Parents are Harold and Dianne Rucker of Franklin, Tennessee, and Thomas and the late Sonja Pustulka of Detroit, Michigan.

COLLISION COURSE A month ago, I was involved in a horrific car accident. Ever since, I’ve been scheduled for twice-weekly physical therapy. My friends have been great organizers, and they’ve lined up people to drive me to therapy sessions and my other appointments, too. I’m grateful, except for one of my friends whose driving drives me crazy. She drives over the speed limit whenever she can; she runs stop signs and rushes through caution lights. I’d never ridden with her, so how was I to know? She hasn’t been stopped by a police officer, at least while I’ve been with her. I survived one car wreck — I don’t need another one. What do I do? — Anonymous, Oak Hill You’ve been in the hot seat before. There’s no reason for you to ride shotgun again, but somebody needs to keep this mad woman off the road. It need not be you. You might leave it to the driving-crew coordinator to tell Ms. Evel Knievel that your schedule’s full. (Who cares if it’s true?) You’ve got your own health to be concerned about. Try canceling a couple of dates with the kindhearted speed devil and hope she’ll get the message. She probably won’t. (There seems to be no stopping her.) If she doesn’t, you have my full permission to freak out. You don’t need any more time spent in twice-weekly therapy, so go ahead and sign her up for driver training at your own expense. Your insurance probably won’t cover it.

However much it costs, consider it money well spent.

PUCKER UP At my office, we’re working on a major sales project. I’m on the planning team, and we all work well together. I’m the only woman on the committee, and we’ve hired a consultant, a guy who is a pretty good friend of mine. Every time we get together with him, he greets everybody else with a handshake — and he greets me with a kiss on the cheek. He’s not just making me uncomfortable; I’m sure he’s endangering his contract with the company, too. The kissing stuff has to stop. I like him, but I want to keep our business relationship and our friendship separate. How do I do that? — Anonymous, Gallatin

Take a Bow Nashville Ballet’s fond farewell to Artistic Director Paul Vasterling Since its founding in 1986, Nashville Ballet has grown to become the largest professional ballet company in Tennessee. This year, a man who has poured 35 years of heart and soul into this organization, lauded Artistic Director Paul Vasterling, will step away from its spotlight.

Paul started with the Nashville Ballet in 1988 as a company dancer, ballet master, teacher and choreographer. Ten years later, he accepted the position of artistic director, cultivating a varied repertoire of classical ballet and contemporary works, a noticeable increase in long-term sustainability, and a tremendous sense of growth in the creativity and talent in both the organization and the Nashville arts community.

With his deep connection to music and passion for community, Paul’s creations highlight the wealth of artistry and rich history of Nashville and have led to countless collaborations with local artists, museums and more. Paul was a budding pianist at age 10 and dancer at 16, and his choreography closely and intentionally bends to the inflection of each note — evidence that, for this master and maestro, music and dance are deeply intertwined.
