A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I’ve been taking more walks around my neighborhood lately and spending more time enjoying nature. It’s easy to become so accustomed to the beauty around us that we don’t even notice it anymore. The pattern of raindrops on the window. The texture of rocks eroded by wind and water to reveal bands of color. An aspen tree’s eyes peering at you. These all have a fascinating elegance to them—if only we take the time to notice.

As knitters, we also can become indifferent to the beauty of our work. We forget that the power of knitting is in the making, not the finished object. How many times have you been focused solely on finishing a project, knitting as quickly as possible while watching TV or socializing? I certainly have “mindless” projects that I can work on without paying much attention. Knitting becomes background noise, not something we take the time to examine and appreciate.

The projects in this collection are designed to be enjoyed, from casting on the first stitch to wrapping yourself in the finished object. Designers Antonia Cavaliere, Sanna Mård Castman, Estefania Espindola, Donna Estin, Zanete Hussain, Susanna IC, Carolyn Noyes, Courtney Spainhower, Shilo Weir, and Griselda Zárate created these sweaters and wraps with delightful visual details for the eyes and textures for the fingers. These projects are named for everyday natural phenomena that we should take time to stop and appreciate: the scent of rain, the shapes of clouds, and the colors and textures of rocks.

The Cuspate Sweater gets its name from the distinctive stockinette and garter-stitch pattern on the sleeve and body hems. It is worked in the round from the bottom up, using circular yoke shaping at the shoulders. The neck is worked using a folded hem, creating a clean collar with structure.

The double-fronted Petrichor Cardigan is perfect for wrapping up on a gray day. PLYMOUTH YARN HOMESTEAD Homestead is made of wool from sheep living in the highlands of Peru. These sheep are a cross between Merino and Corriedale and produce wool that has the best of both breeds: It’s soft enough to wear next to the skin, but it doesn’t pill much and is strong enough that it stands up to everyday wear.

SUGAR BUSH YARNS SHIVER Single-ply yarns such as Shiver have an exceptionally soft, woolly feel. Because the yarn has less twist, it has a plump, cushy texture. Unplied yarns are usually a little more delicate, but the addition of long mohair and silk fibers gives strength and stability.

ZEALANA PERFORMA RIMU DK Rimu DK uses a unique fiber: possum. Not to be confused with American opossums, New Zealand possums are an invasive species with a thick, soft coat. Instead of being farmed, the fiber comes from possums culled to protect native wildlife. It is extremely fine and rivals cashmere in softness.

ANCIENT ARTS FIBRE CRAFTS LASCAUX WORSTED Lascaux Worsted is made of two wools from distinctly different regions: Punta Arenas wool comes from sheep in a particular region of Argentina, while the Manx Loaghtan is native to the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom.
