Lurssen’s 180m Superyacht ‘Azzam’

The World’s largesT YachT! n April 5th, 2013 Lürssen Yachts launched the World’s Largest Yacht, the 180-meter project ‘AZZAM’. An industry leader in superyacht construction, the German shipyard has launched many of the world’s largest, most notable builds including the 115-meter Pelorus, the 147-meter Topaz and the 138-meter Rising Sun.

o

Under the guidance of Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, the technical engineering was developed by Lürssen, the exterior design by Nauta Yachts and the interior design by Christophe Leoni to create what would become the most complex and challenging yacht ever been built. Ahbabi assembled and oversaw a world-class team for the project. Under his leadership, the overall requirements for general layout, size and

performance and exterior style were developed. His brief was to build a large luxury yacht with an innovative and timeless design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters while providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests. AZZAM breaks new grounds in terms of dimension, performance and technology. In addition to being the largest

yacht in the world with a length of 180 meters and a top speed of over 30 knots, she adds another record in terms of construction time. Lürssen Managing Partner Peter Lürssen proudly said: “When she will be delivered later this year, she will have been in build for only three years following one year of engineering. She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but in yachting history as well”.

Nauta CEO Mario Pedol stated: “When I first saw the scale model before the general presentation to the Principal, I was 100% happy with the outcome and so was the Principal. Such recognition made me confident that we had achieved our goal”. The design has strength of character and sense of purpose, yet has a timeless elegance, incorporating all the elements of visionary contemporary modern design. The interior decoration was undertaken by the renowned French

designer Christophe Leoni who is proud to have been able to realize a sophisticated and luxurious interior in a turn of the century Empire style. “Though Yachting is not my main area of business, I thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with Nauta and Lürssen and am confident that the final yacht is everything and more the owner expects.” he said. Under the direction of Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, the best solutions were found in order to satisfy the specific

requirements with regards to design and technology, creating a yacht that met all expectations. The end result is a truly sophisticated Superyacht, even by Lurssen’s standards. Among many other features and firsts, AZZAM has a main salon with a length of 29-meters and a beam of 18-meters with no support pillars in between, creating the largest open floor plan ever conceived on a yacht. Powered by a combination of 2 gas turbines and 2 diesel engines with a total of 94,000

horsepower, AZZAM will travel in excess of 30 knots! Based in Bremen, Germany, Lürssen is a global leader in yacht building. Employing a workforce of 1550 highly skilled technicians and craftsmen, in four state-of-the-art shipyards in North Germany. The privately run company, which remains solely in the hands of the Lürssen family to this day has earned an international reputation as a specialist in exclusive, large custom-built yachts.

Grammar of ads Sebastian Antony Parammel, director of Time Ads Group, gets candid about his hardships and how his firm became one of the torchbearers in the ad field Text K.R. Rejeesh Photos Tanzen Ponsek ehind every achievement, there will be a tale of struggle. It’s rare for people who recall their past once they reach the helm of their profession. But this maverick ‘ad man’ is different. He has the legacy of rewriting the grammar of commercial ads and trends. For Sebastian Antony Parammel, director of Time Ads Group, achievements were not a snap. As an 18-year-old, Sebastian Antony Parammel boarded train to Mumbai to scrape a living. His brother owned a firm at Juhu and he joined there. The remaining part of his life takes after a film’s plot. From an ordinary artiste who paints the hoardings, Sebastian Antony Parammel rose to the position where he could set up Space Ads in Mumbai under the guidance of his brother.

B

Expansion His philosophy was to move to smaller markets and become the big player there. So he included Goa in his initial expansion market map of the company. Later he ventured into Kerala market. “The outdoor segment was relatively small in these markets. National advertisers had not been spending much because of the quality and nature of work there. With the advent of Times Ads, there was a considerable improvement in the quality of work. The output was similar to anywhere else in India,”

30

JULY 2013

Quick Read elaborates Sebastian Antony Parammel. The major change, rather the ‘revolutionary’ makeover, was the shifting from canvas to flex and later, lighted flex boards. The outdoor ads gave the immaculate precision like that of a magazine or TV ad; thanks to the new technology. “Therefore, with our innovations, when a new campaign was launched overnight the ad spots in the city would also undergo a change,” he adds. Other innovations that came into being were Mobile Vans with Backlit that could be turned to any direction.

Reality in the ad field “Despite being an industry where about 25 lakh people are working, there is no aid from the government. There is a mutual help group called KAIA (Kerala Ad Industry Association) which would extend help to the people involved in this. In fact, the transition of the industry from painting to printing has really affected a lot of people,” points out Sebastian Antony Parammel. He recounts his days in Mumbai when hoarding/billboards were painted by hand. There was a system followed similar to a modern production line. Rough canvas was created by cooking old cloths in huge vats and then it’s dried out. This is then converted into smaller pieces, which is sketched out by and artist with charcoal. At the same time there would be a palette of colors kept ready by mixing paint and plaster of paris. About 3 coats of this are ap-

plied over the charcoal sketch then the main artist takes over to apply the finishing touches. The people who see the hoarding never know the amount of hard work that goes into the making of the final product. It’s a very industry in which a lot of effort is required yet gets back only a minimal pay in return.

Film debut Meanwhile, Time Ads Group ventured into film distribution and the maiden film they released was ‘Ulakanayakan’ Kamal Haasan-starrer “Dasavatharam”. The film also marked the beginning of the usage of hoardings for films, which created the transition from posters as the main means of publicity. They had put up 100 hoardings across Kerala for the movie’s promotion. The Group has a few films in their production credit“Trivandrum Lodge”, in which a Helicam was used for the first time, “My Big Father” and “Loudspeaker.” Mr Prakash, CEO of Time Ads Group has been his constant companion from Mumbai days onwards. After consulting with him, Mr Parammel decided to start a production house. The quality of the movie and the independence with which they could market the film , without a restrictions on the budget was the main reason for him to start it. The Family Man In his own words, Mr.Parammmel is blessed with a family which not only understands the demands of his entrepreneurial path, but also supports it. All major decisions are discussed

with his wife Deepa. The couple has 2 children Merlin and Arnold who are students at the SBOA School l in Kochi. Describing himself a self made man, Mr. Parammel has hands on experience in every sector within the industry from Design, Production, Manufacturing and Mounting of the product. Such experiences help in derive various innovative ideas for his clients. He confesses that he was a good footballer. If circumstances had been better he would have taken up football as a career. On asking about personal interest and hobbies, Mr.Parammel opens up with a smile,’ I like collecting antiques, crystals, and similar objects of art, my interest in it has the final say, I never let anyone else influence my choices. He recounts a story from his younger days when his elder brother had taken his shopping. His choice of shirt was dismissed by his brother and they left the shop buying a different one. Yet Sebastian made it a point to go back there the next day to purchase his initial choice.

Time Ad Group also had a similar company in Singapore The Groups All India presence includes - indoor and indoor printing, manufacturing, innovative and idea hubs for clients, Time Ads Entertainments and Time Ads Releases.

Vision Making it a professional industry is one of his visions. Also Sebastian Antony Parammel is very eager to create a brand name and ready to offer help to people with similar tastes and ideas. “We need a new breed of talented people because no one can always be on the top of business all the time. One day we will have to give way for others,” signs off the unassuming ad maker.

What prompts you to take up roles in experimental movies? I suppose it’s my inclination to don new roles and my enthusiasm to experiment with unconventional characters. Before long being in the industry, I got acclimatized being an off-roader. And today that boils down to my choice of films. Ultimately, what difference does it make if I decide to play similar roles on-screen time and again? You’re all set to make your debut as a producer in Ranjith Sankar’s ‘Punnyalan Agarbathis’. How was the transition from an actor to a producer? My love for movies got me into acting and now again it’s making me step into the shoes of a producer. How I got to be the producer was sheer coincidence. Director Ranjith dropped in with the script; we sat together, discussed and after getting to know my part in ‘Punnyalan Agarbathis’ as Joy Thakkolkaaran, I gladly agreed to do the film. After a while he said, “How about producing it?” Thinking over, I too found it

will you portray a gay role? If the character is worth it….why not? to be an exciting move and so gave the nod. Currently unwinding after a busy schedule, how did you spend time with your family? After a prolonged hectic schedule, I came home with plans of travelling places with my family. But it so happened that I got hitched with meetings. Evenings, if I’m at home I would spend time with Adwaith, my son and my little angel Veda who entertains me with her giggles. Your share in helping your wife Saritha who is an entrepreneur…. She runs boutiques in Kerala. Whenever I get a break from work I accompany her in picking clothes for her store from all across the country. Recently, you had disclosed that there are not going to be any Anoop Menon-Jayasurya movie in the next couple of months. Why so? We are comfortable working with each other and we’re great friends too. But now we reckon being in the comfort zone, sharing screen for long can cause danger. Realising that, Anoop is going ahead with his scripts and movies and I have decided to do films that impress me for its exceptional characters. You seem to be a favourite

Three things we don’t know about you… I’m very sensitive, blunt and truthful co-star of many Mollywood actresses. How do you maintain the rapport? With all my co-stars I share a cordial relation that is based on mutual admiration. Be it on the sets or otherwise, I talk to people because I like to and not just for the heck of it. For those who haven’t watched ‘Thank You’ yet…. It’s a movie with substance and to those who haven’t watched it, I would say it’s a must watch for suspense and thriller movie lovers. About upcoming projects…. ‘Philip and the Monkey Pen’ It’s a children’s movie that conveys a valuable message. The movie is directed by Rojan Thomas and Shanil Mohammad and produced by Sandra Thomas. A Tamil movie directed by VK Prakash under the banner ‘Full House’ starring Sethu. The script is by Jayamohan, who had penned Maniratnam movie ‘Kadal’. Children’s movie and Jayasurya….. I found that I could relate to the movie so much. I play the role of a father of a boy who is of my son’s age. As I’m watching him grow, I know children’s behavioural patterns and their thoughts during this age. So, I am sure that I can do justice to this role.

Sexiest yesteryear actress After a lot of recollection, I think it’s Sumalatha who comes to my mind. What has the industry taught you? I have learnt that keeping updated spruce up the artiste in me. A luxury for which you’ve invested the most… My car BMW 5 series Would you accept a conventional role for big money? I’m not acting for money alone and if such a day dawns I would bid adieu to the industry. Are celebrities bound to answer ‘social responsibility’ questions? Celebs are also a part of the society. I believe that they too have a responsibility towards the happenings around. Your favourite cuisine There is nothing that can beat the taste of kanji and payar. Hangouts in Kochi….

Employing a workforce of 1550 highly skilled technicians and craftsmen, in four state-of-the-art shipyards in North Germany. wine

Everything Wine and Fine Wine has an illustrious history dating back thousands of years, with the earliest known production occurring around 6000 BC in Georgia. It plays an important role in day-to-day life and religion

Must watch wine movies The Earth Is Mine (1959) The film featuring Rock Hudson and Jean Simmons portrays the lives of the Rambeau family, a committed Californian winemaking dynasty that tries to keep afloat during the prohibition in the United States. For the movie, the actors cracked the practical of vineyard procedures under the guidance of locals making its lead actor Rock Hudson, a left-hander to attach bud from one plant to the root of another with perfection. Sideways (2004) The movie is about two quadragenarians, Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church going on a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County Wine Country. It’s a wine tasting road trip to kick up Jack’s (Thomas Haden’s) final days as a bachelor. ‘Sideways’ made us realize that ‘one need not be wealthy to buy bottles of wine’.

48

JULY 2013

Mondovino (2004) This Italian word which means ‘World of Wine’ is a documentary film that reconnoiters the impact of globalization in various wine-producing regions. ‘Mondovino’ portrays the battle between large winemaking corporations and the single-vineyard wineries, the filming of which originally started off as a two-month project, but on getting to gather more information across the globe, ended up by taking more than three years to wind-up. A GoodYear (2006) Directed by Ridley Scott, the movie has Russell Crowe as Max Skinner involved with wine making. In it he plays the role of a carnivorous Wall Street lion who returns to a French wine country where he is tamed by the routines he gets to follow at the vineyards.

Food and Wine Harmony White wine like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio / Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc would be perfect with seafood or with some fresh cheese. A bottle of Rosé wine be it the White Merlot or the White Zinfandel goes with different dining options. It can be had with salads, stews and pastas. Red wines are highly recommended for steaks, stews and other meat preperations. The popular red wines that rule the list includes Beaujolais, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. Sparkling often referred to incorrectly as Champagne is a type of sparkling wine that blends well with seafood. Dessert wines that are wines with high sugar content are a popular choice with or as dessert.

Must watch wine movies Bottle Shock (2008) The movie chronicles Alan Rickman as a British wine dealer who cracks to pit American wines against the French legacy, by going to Napa Valley for a blind taste test. This movie based on the 1976 wine competition is a true story called the ‘Judgment of Paris’ which had the Californian wineries defeat the French.

Corked (2009) It’s a feature film lampooning the Oscar winning movie ‘Sideways’. The film is about a prominent celebrity wine critic going to a locality having everyone, trying to make their wine end up on the critic’s golden palate. ‘Corked’ travels behind a manic winemaker, a billionaire, a clueless winery manager and an incompetent rich kid, who tries to compete in winning the trophy.

A bottle of wine that was worth at least $500,000 ‘Chateau Margaux’ 1787 was supposedly owned by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson.

5 TIPS TO STORE WINE Keep It Cool Storing it in a temperature higher than 70° F will cook the wine resulting it to have a flat flavor. So for the wine to have a longer shelf life, the ideal temperature is between 45° F and 65° F. At the same time keeping it too cool can also do harm to its storage. Though you intend to refrigerate wine for a couple of months, never allow it freeze as turning liquid into ice could expand the bottle, pushing the cork out.

Far from Lights Exposing wines to sunlight can pose a problem to a long-term storage. The sun’s UV rays can degrade the quality of wine. That is one of the reasons why wines are packed in coloured bottles. They act like sunglasses for wine.

Place it Sideways Bottles have to be stored on their sides to keep the liquid up against the cork, keeping the cork from drying up.

No Shaking Bottles Moving around the bottles could damage wine in the long term as it acts as a catalyst to speedy chemical reactions in the liquid. Shaking wine bottles can possibly disturb the sediment in older wines and keep them from settling, making them unpleasantly gritty.

Anti-storage Rooms Storing wines in the kitchen or laundry room is out of question as these places have constant hot temperature around. The ideal place will be a wine cooler or else the smartest way to go about storing without shelling bucks can be by converting a little-used closet or a vacant storage area into a wine store.

Bond Beyond

Boundaries Cross-cultural weddings are no more uncommon. With both families welcoming the event whole heartedly, such events are becoming a rich blend of cultures- a pick from the best of both, which everyone can savour. Text Dhanya Menon Photos Tamarind Wedding Planners WD Wedding of the Month is the glimpse of palatable cross cultural retreat for an Indo-Chinese couple held at Ramada Resort, Kochi A wedding is a confluence of several elements including cultures, families and social circles. In cross cultural weddings however, it remains essential to strike a balance between all these elements. With the rise of this trend, weddings are no more a display of rituals, but an eclectic mix of traditions to make an enjoyable affair for the guests.

crossing regional to a pan-Indian look. So the central theme of this wedding was the celebration of a love beyond cultures. A scoop from the variety entertainments and interesting ceremonies from all over India and a few Chinese elements were blended to make it very unique” says Anu.

Wedding Eve- June 1st @ Ramada Resort Around 150 guests participated in the Wedding Eve - sangeet function, which was a vivacious display of colours. “The ambiance was that of glitter, colourful lighting and lots of laughter. Above all, it was a mingling of guests from various parts of the globe that made the evening a celebration” says Arabind. The bride was adorned in a pretty pink and purple lehenga and the groom in an ink-blue formal ethnic suit. The bride was welcomed to the stage in a train consisting of Moroccon lantern bearers in front, followed by dhol and colourful dhandiya dancers. The groom who was brought within a jasmine frame held by his cousins, also made his entry with the accompaniment of dhol and bhangara dancers. The event took place in a closed tent which was covered with intermingled red and gold drapes. The interiors were richly decorated with several elements like rangoli designs, colourful drapes and lights. Colourful cushions and bolsters were spread across these low seaters to maintain the ambiance throughout. Lighted candele-

bras holding floating candles in cut class, bangle counter, a large brass ‘urli’ filled with marigolds etc welcomed the guests with a magical touch. The sequence of the events was fun filled and splashy, with dancers, songs and entertaining ritualistic picks from various cultures -both Indian and Chinese. “The highlights were Chinese wish lanterns, photo sequence of an Aranmula Kannadi gift, Sangeet games like ring search in urli full of milk and rose petals, etc so as the guests could experience a taste of Indian culture which was new and unique to them”. A mingling between the guests were made easy with a complete informal environment with dance performances, and games like a competitive mashup - dance competition between the men and women guests in which the bridegroom joined, untying the knots etc. The eventful evening culminat-

Wedding Day@ June 2nd The wedding day was a traditional Hindu Nair wedding with all its simplicity and cultural charm held at the same venue. The groom fulfilled his long

cherished dream of riding an elephant as he was welcomed to the venue on an elephant top amidst percussion ensembles. As a part of social responsibility, the couple planted a tree sapling at the resort in celebration of their new life together. The theme being traditional, the decor was done accordingly. The dome shaped Mandapam was a rich floral structure, full of jasmine and marigold. The ceiling which was the same structure used the previous day, was blended with a cream and gold theme. The walkway towards venue was lined with floral arrangements and marigolds floating in ‘urlis’. A huge floral display of

Lord Ganesha at the entrance was very eye catching. The guests were greeted with soft instrumental music on entry along with jasmins. The couple was dressed in traditional Kerala attire-the bride in a red kancheepuram and the groom in kasavu mundu. The solemnization was followed by a traditional sadhya in banana leaves with all its variety condiments. The wedding was followed by grihapravesham at the groom’s house. “It was a new experience for the bride’s family and their guests,” concludes Anu. Indians who believe in ‘Adithi Devo Bhava’ do their best to give the best to their guests.

balance of traditional and contemporary elements is essential to create a harmonious design. Using excessively, either traditional or modern design concepts make spaces irrelevant as architecture has to be true to the times it belongs to because that is where the user is. Located at the Northern tip of Kerala- Vadakara, this house owned by Mr. Sudheer Chandroth and designed by Kozhikode based architect Vinay Mohan is an elegant fusion. On a whole it imbibes a Kerala style while simultaneously bears the hallmarks of a modern sophisticated space. “This fusion style is the result of the client’s desire” says Vinay.

Entrance Entrance to the house is designed through a contemporary ‘Nalukettu’. This pleasant space creates a mood as one enters the house and also it offers ample spaces with seating to have a chat. From there one enters directly to a foyer and then to the guest living.

Living Spaces There are two living rooms -the guest living and the family living. Both are separated for enhanced privacy as the family members could have their time without any interruption. Dining space is separated from the kitchen with a glass partition again to ensure privacy. From the dining space there is an opening to small private garden where family

Defining

Tovino It’s raining debutantes in Mollywood and to survive in the cut-throat showbiz, one needs the real skill. Basking in the success of his latest release ‘ABCD’ here’s what Tovino had to say about his Mollywood journey so far Text Thabitha Marion Photo Jithin A Sankarji

How has acting been so far? It has been fine and now I’m on cloud nine after being a part of ‘ABCD’. I started off my acting career with ‘Prabhuvinte Makkal’ and a cameo in ‘August Club’. Then I ventured into direction, assisting director Roopesh Peethambaran in the movie ‘Theevram’. I couldn’t be with the crew till its completion as talks were on with director Martin Prakkat for ‘ABCD’. I was so elated when I got to know the character I had to portray in the movie. Though it’s a negative role as a politician, I wouldn’t tag my character as villainous.

Share with us your experience working with ‘ABCD’s cast…. It has been such a wonderful exposure. I had a time of my life working with Dulquer whom I consider to be a superstar by now. Time flies when I sit with

Gregory for a chat. He was my roomy during the shoot. ABCD’s heroine Aparna is an extremely talented artiste who is also a member of International Theatre. And the creativity of director Martin Prakkat goes without saying. He is such a chilled out person on and off the set.s He is an actor too and I believe that it’s the inborn actor in him that makes him a better director. He gives time and space to artistes and above all, he is very encouraging.

Dulquer as a person…. Working with him is as easy as pie. I would say he is one of the most unpretentious people I have come across. His simplicity makes him sit on the floor if his hands can’t reach for a chair. I’m sure not all celeb kids can be so. Surprisingly in no way is he ruled by his father’s stardom.

Architecture palaces

Glory of Yore FWD Life takes you through three magnificent palaces of Kerala and traces its architectural specialities

Quick Read The museum attached to the Nedumangadu Valikoyikkal palace exhibits articles like Chandravalayam (not found in any other such museum in Kerala), a small percussion instrument and Nanthuni, a sweet sounding musical instrument made of wood. The archaeological museum at the Krishnapuram palace has one of the largest mural paintings of the 18th Century 3 metres (9.8 ft) high it is the largest single piece of mural painting so far discovered in Kerala. ncient structures are silent witnesses of the events in history. The architectural marvel of these palaces is an epitome of the brilliance of the older generation. Modern architecture is indebted to the ancient structures as most of the architectural styles are being adopted by architects today.

is situated at Thuckalay, in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. It is an ancient historical monument representing the indigenous architectural features, especially in the traditional style of southern Kerala. The palace is situated in the centre of the Padmanabhapuram Fort with an area of 186 acres. All the buildings in it are elegantly designed and display simplicity of architectural style characterized by pointed gables, dormer windows and long corridors. The earliest of structures

was built about 1335 AD. The most noteworthy edifices are the Entrance Hall (Poomukham), the Council Chamber (Mantrasala), the Natakasala (Theatre Hall), Pooja Mandapam (Place of worship), the Saraswathy Shrine and above all the Uppirikka Malika (Storeyed building), which contain well preserved mural paintings. The mythological figures painted on the walls are masterly designed and are wonderfully fresh and unmutilated.

Koyikkal Palace

Nedumangadu Valikoyikkal palace stands as a unique example of the style of architecture which prevailed in Kerala in the 15th century. It is one of the rare palaces built in the shape of a ‘Nalu Kettu’ adhering to all rules of indigenous building architecture. The building which has a slanting and gabled roof and a number of single-piece pillars still remains a historical marvel with its unique indigenous style of construction. The Koyikkal palace of Nedumangad is one of the

oldest Venadu Palaces which was abandoned without any renovation over the centuries and it was the headquarters of the Perakam dynasty. After the re-constitution of the State, this palace came under the Travancore Devaswom Board. Later, this palace and the adjoining property were taken over by the Department of Archaeology, Kerala State in 1979. Since then it is a protected monument. The palace which was in a dilapidated condition was renovated scientifically using the latest conservation techniques without affecting its historical significance and antiquity. The Folklore Museum and the Numismatics Museum attached to the Nedumangad Koyikkal palace are the first venture of this kind by the Government of Kerala.

Krishnapuram Palace This palace is a unique example for the Kerala style architecture, especially the residence of local chieftains and royal palaces of Travancore. It carries one of the largest mural paintings of the 18th century school in Kerala. An archaeological museum is also accommodated inside the palace. The palace and the surrounding areas are declared as protected by the department in 1961 under the Protected Monument Act. All these three monuments are under the control of Department of Archaeology, Government of Kerala. These monuments are opened to the public all days except the Government holidays and Monday.

in Chichuhlonga. After several training sessions, they are groomed to become a Kanthari to bring about social changes in the society. Kanthari, the International Institute for Social Entrepreneurs and Innovators in Kerala, was started in 2009 by Dutchborn Paul Kronenberg and Sabriye Tenberken from Germany. Sabriye Tenberken, a blind woman, during her trip to the Himalayas, realised that Tibetans have a stigma against people with disabilities, which prompted her to start the first school for the

blind in Tibet in 1998. This school formed the foundation of ‘Braille without Borders’, an organization that empowers blind people. A thought to create a larger impact on society led to the formation of “Kanthari.”

Kanthari “A small chilly can make a huge difference. What I mean is that one individual can bring in a big change in society. Like Gandhiji who proved that using the ethics and intelligence one man can overthrow an empire, we encourage people here to get inspired by Gandhian movement,” says Paul Kronenberg. “Nowadays there is the change where people say the NGOs which make money themselves to be sustainable. We do agree because I am not a business person. Bill Gates knows how to make money, but he does good things for the society. If somebody makes a good product that improves the quality of the world, they make money with that and it’s not for personal profit,” Paul explains.

The five acts The Kanthari curriculum, a journey in five acts, will take the participants through a series of activities that lead them to being able to start their own social initiatives. The first four acts provide many opportunities to experience what it means to set up or run an already existent social initiative. After the fourth act, the participants will be ready to jump into the fifth act to start their personal initiatives in the region of their choice. “We have participants mostly from countries like Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Last year, 95 per cent participants were blind people. They must have a dream and submit their project in the seven-month course. The participants have to be highly motivated, driven and creative in order to let his/her project become reality. We have about 23 participants this year,” says Ajith, the manager of Kanthari. Participants are selected after five rounds of interview. Catalysts (trainers) impart them practical training. They conceive the place as a new country and

the participants study problems of the country. The currency of Chichuhlonga is Chilongs (1 rupee = 20 chilongs). “After the course, they go back to their countries and start entrepreneurship. Once they register, they become part of the alumniKanthari club. They interact with each other,” adds Ajith. Does Kanthari provide financial aid for startups? “We don’t fund long term. We have

associations in Switzerland, Germany and Holland. We try to raise fund so that everybody gets enough funding in the beginning,” replies Paul Kronenberg. Sprawling across 2.75 acre, Kanthari is a wonderland with a lot of innovations. Like the land, the participants who come here possess creative and often unique ideas to create a significant change in their community..

Colours of Kanthari

Red Kanthari (advocate)

Green Kanthari (Initiator)

Red Kantharis fight for a world free from discrimination, negative attitude or harmful norms. Their goal is to create a change in mindset in communities through advocacy and awareness.

These initiators want to create social change by starting grassroot projects with innovative approaches. Schools for marginalized, training centres for the blind etc are a few initiatives.

Orange Kanthari (Social Entrepreneur) Kanthari entrepreneurs use business as a tool for sustainable social change. The goal is not to make profit, but to use business to create structures to benefit the needy.

Yellow Kanthari (Inventor)

Purple Kanthari (Artist)

They create new products, strategies or concepts for social change. They can be active in the areas of environment, computer technology, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Kanthari artists use their creativity and art as a tool for making a difference. Musicians, painters, authors, filmmakers bring a positive mind set through their work.

Madness It is that time of the year when our markets are flooded with varieties of Mangoes, and almost every Indian household has their own favourite Mango recipe Preparation

Mango Chicken, Bean and Rice Bake Per serving Serves: 4 Calories: 753 kcal Cooking hour: 1 hr 10 minutes excluding marinating hours.

Ingredients Handful of chopped spring onions 2 tbsp chopped ginger 3 chopped garlic cloves 1 seedless red chilli a small handful of finely chopped coriander leaves

88

JULY 2013

1 tbsp thyme leaves Juice of a lime 1 lime cut into wedges 1½ tsp ground allspices 2 tbsp sunflower oil 8 chicken drumsticks 300 gm long grain rice 400 g kidney beans 500 ml chicken stock 1 ripe mango, peeled and chopped into pieces

Put the spring onions, ginger, garlic, chilli, coriander stalks, thyme, lime juice, allspice and oil in a food processor and blend them into a paste. Pour it over the chicken drumsticks and leave them to marinate for at least one hour. Heat oven to 180C. Tip the rice and beans into a large roasting tin with deep sides. Remove the chicken from the marinade and set aside. Mix the stock into the marinade in the bowl and stir well. Pour the stock over

the rice and beans and place the chicken drumsticks and the mango pieces on top. Cover the tray tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Take the tray and remove the foil. Spoon the mango chutney over the drumsticks and return to the oven, uncovered at a temperature up to 220C for 35-40 minutes. Pull it out from the oven when the chicken pieces turn brown. Before serving, fluff up the rice with a fork and scatter with the coriander leaves and serve it hot with lime wedges.

snapshot The name ‘Mango’ is derived from the Tamil word ‘Mangkay’ or ‘Man-gay’ later on named as ‘Manga’ by the Portuguese traders. The king of fruits is a good cure for loss of weight and it also helps check premature aging. A glass of lukewarm milk taken after eating a ripe mango energizes the human system.

COOL TIPS Jackfruit - Fruit of the Season Jackfruit Bread Pudding

Preparation

Ingredients 4 cups of milk 2 eggs (slightly beaten) 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp vanilla extract 4 tbsp melted butter 1 cup jackfruit, sliced into thin strips 6 - 8 cubes of white bread

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 1-1/2 quart dish with butter. Whisk the milk, eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla, and butter in a large bowl. Add jackfruit, and bread. Mix them well and allow the bread to soak in it for thirty minutes. Pour the mixture into the dish and add warm water to an inch from the top of the dish. Bake for 75 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Top the dessert with whipped cream and serve.

Mango Mash Though it’s messy to have this fruit blast, it is fun enjoying the fruit this way. Take a ripe mango which is soft enough to be squeezed. Apply some pressure on it to mash the mango without breaking its skin. Roll it until it feels like the pulp inside has become juicy. Cut open the top most portion of the mango and suck out the pulp. Those of you trying this for the first time should make sure that you’re not super-sensitive to poison ivy as there might be a slight skin irritation caused by the mango skin.

BONUS

Did you know?

One cup of mango has 107 calories in it, providing 25 percent of the daily value for Vitamin A. The word ‘mango’ besides being a fruit, the Oxford English dictionary also gives it an obsolete meaning, synonymous to the word ‘pimp’. Ancient Sanskrit poets believed that chewing mango buds would help them to sweeten their voice.

Potty Training

Rules of Confinement

for Pooches

Bringing home a pup is definitely exciting, but a lot of effort needs to be put in to make him your most sincere friend around ou bring home the most adorable pup, thinking it’s one of life’s best things, but it takes a lot of patience and dedication to train him. Until a dog reaches physical maturity, they may have a tough time controlling their bladder for more than 1 or 2 hours. And this becomes all the more bad during the rainy season, as their outings get to be restricted due to showers. At times they might show signs of uneasiness by scratching the floor or frantically exploring places for elimination. As they are puppies, it is our responsibility to understand their needs and our requirement to abstain them from littering within the house. So if you are getting irritated as house training is not progressing, follow these potty training

Y

techniques. Confine your pup in a crate or a cage without flooring it with disposable papers. As most dogs don‘t like to dirty the place where they live, they would try their best to hold on. Use a leash to train it. It helps your dog to be in control of whatever happens. Speak out the words you like to communicate its place of disposal, so that next time when at one say it would understand what you are trying to convey. If your pup is not used to the leash, slip the lease and carry it from its crate to outside. Once outside set the puppy down and by words and actions make it understand that it let out for potty. And for once he is done with it; praise him for his obedience and co-operation.

BONUS Researchers at the National University of Singapore noticed a species of soft-shelled turtles sticking their heads into puddles of water and wiggling their tongue. Initially they mistook it for having water. To learn more about it the researchers purchased live turtles from a local market and kept them in water for six days. After removing from water and placing them in a puddle, the turtles dipped their heads and spat out fifty times more urea than was present in the mouth discharge. For this species urea travels through the reptiles’ bloodstream to their mouth. Though this is a way to excrete urea, one cannot technically call it urination. The researchers concluded by saying, “If active urea excretion could be applied on patients with kidney failure, it would have been such a relief for them.” 98

JULY 2013

One to two month old can be confined for 2 hours without a potty break. A three month old can go on for a 3 hour confinement within its cage without a potty break. And a four month old can manage to have a 4 hour confinement without a potty break. Monsoons are the easiest time to potty train. As it gets damp everywhere and with no distractions around, no pup would like to spend much time outside.

Goats Behind Bars

Three goats had been detained by cops after they were accused of damaging a brand new police vehicle in Chennai. Twelve goats got on top of the vehicle, damaging its wipers and scratching the paint of the bonnet. Seeing this the officers got together to drag them down and took them into custody. The animals were tied together and detained in a cage, till the cops got hold of the owner.

stealing

No ‘steal’thy act Like lying, “stealing” is an adult term that may not mean anything to young children. Take a moment to understand why children steal and how to handle this common problem toy car that turns up in the pocket of a four-year-old after a visit to a friend’s house is not proof that

You can let off first offenders with a warning, but mention that he will get punished for similar action if he repeats. Apologizing can be stressful, so you can offer to do it together

The best way to teach lasting values is to draw the lessons out of a child rather than imposing them. You want the “give it back” idea to come from the child if at all possible. One of the reasons a child will steal is because he wants to gain attention from someone. Make sure you don’t raise your voice, get angry, point or jab at your child. Ensure that it is clear to your children that you forgive them, still love them.

They don’t know that palming a piece of candy at the grocery store is stealing until you tell them so. Many preschool children can’t curb their impulses. They see the toy, feel they must have it, and take it without any judgment as to the rightness or wrongness of the action. Instead of guilt, they feel relief that their craving has satisfied. At around five to seven years of age children develop a hazy notion of the wrongness of stealing. They can understand the concept of ownership and property rights. Encouraging and helping the child to return stolen goods teaches not only that stealing is wrong, but also that wrongs must be made right. Slim Science A weight loss program becomes successful only when hard work and discipline is introduced and practiced throughout life “hate the kilos I have piled on but I love food. I don’t eat much and now I eat even lesser but I am ballooning. I lost weight but gained more than that when I stopped my diet.” The woes are many, but they all seek the same solution – effective and sustainable weight loss.

i

Effective and sustainable weight loss or Slim Science is based on the following Realistic Goals: Rate at which you will lose weight is based on weight to height ratio, age, sex, body type, basal metabolic rate and other factors. Yet, never let anyone tell you what you cannot achieve. Patience and pesistence with right set of tools and correct information can help achieve what may otherwise be impossible. Rope in a trainer or find weight loss buddies to help you reach your goals. Give your routine 21 days. Do not give up. Eat Sensibly: Do not go overboard with dieting you will end up gaining weight, instead focus on cutting down around 500 to 1000 calories per day for optimal weight loss. This would mean skip those cups of coffee, fizz and halve the rice intake. Replace ingredients with health-

ier options rather than skipping foods that you love. Diet should not create stress. Detox: Few days in a month stay away from acidic foods such as alcohol, preserved, processed, fried and refined foods and replacing the diet with healthy alkaline food (think green colored foods). Know Thyself: Ayurveda indicates, those with Vata body type tend to be lean and lose weight quickly while those with Kapha body type are stocky with slow metabolism, Pitta body type falls in the middle. Body type characteristics cannot be altered. Medical conditions like Hypothyrodism, polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes also cause rapid inch gain. Lab tests are recommended. Certain medications cause weight gain, always check for side effects of pills you pop. Move, Breathe, Smile: If you alternate between bouts of high intensity workout followed by relaxation you will kick up your metabolism and result in sustained weight loss. Fast paced and challenging yoga styles such as Vinyasa interspersed with relaxing postures does this exceptionally well. Build long lean

muscles as they are key to sustainable weight management. Isometric exercises such as Yoga or Pilates helps sculpting long lean muscles that are strong yet flexible. Victory Breath (Ujjayi Pranayma) along with Root Lock (Mula Bandha) in a mindfully executed movement based yoga practice helps you sweat, smile and melt away the inches. Such a practice will energize, destress and curb food cravings. Yoga Postures that are known to help lose weight are Crescent Lunge, High Plank, Bow Pose, Boat Pose, Three Legged Dog Pose, Reverse Warrior, Shoulder Stand and Bridge Pose. Breathing and body alignment is key to the practice. Wind up with Yoga Nidra for deep relaxation to access your subconscious and reinforce intentions of “fit and light”. 21 days will bring you total transfomation both of body and mind.

If you are finding it hard to control your portions, try eating with your left hand, or maybe pick up a fork and knife and use a smaller plate and cup. Practice mindful eating. Include low fat diary to eliminate fat, soups to fill you and consider a nutritious meal replacement supplement. Lack of sleep, skipping breakfast, heavy dinners, emotional binging are causes of weight gain, have a fool proof strategy to combat these negative behavior patterns. Your practice should be sufficiently challenging, fun and yet relaxing. Arm yourself with motivation quotes, videos etc to stay the course. My favourite is Arthurs Transformation on Youtube. Go on sweat, smile and get slimmer

credit score

Snap up your scores Banks and credit card companies use credit scores to evaluate the potential risk posed by lending money to consumers and to mitigate losses due to bad debt

Quick Read How to improve your credit history? Always pay bills on time. Late payments can pull down your credit score. Keep your credit card balance low. If you have used Rs. 90,000 out of a credit limit of Rs. 1,00,000, loan providers will think that you are an imprudent spender and credit hungry. The ideal limit would be in the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. Too many credit cards in hand can get you a bad credit score. Too many loans will also make you ineligible for loans. It is better not to close credit card accounts. Unused credit cards imply that you are financially secure, which help you to get better score.

uying a three-bedroom apartment was a dream for Vishal Menon, a 35 year-old manager in a blue-chip firm. He was shocked when his home loan application got rejected. Why was it rejected despite Vishal’s top dollar job? Vishal’s credit score was low. He got a low score because he had a history of irregular credit card payments. While computing the credit score, maximum weightage (around 35%) is given to clean repayment history (of all loans including credit cards). Most people are unaware of credit score and come to

know about it after they fail to get a loan. So what is a credit score? Banks give credit card or loan––home, auto, and personal loans–– based on the ability of borrowers to repay the amount. They measure the repayment ability or credit worthiness based on credit score. If you have a higher credit score, it will help you get loans on better terms and lower interest rate. Before applying for a loan, one should approach RBI approved credit information companies like CIBIL, Experian or Equifax. When you apply for a loan or a credit card, the bank forwards your application to any of these companies before

approving loan or credit card. The credit score is based on your repayment history, amount of credit on loans being used, number of loan applications, and the amount of secured and unsecured loans. Secured loans include auto and home loans while credit on cards constitutes unsecured loans. If your basket of loans has higher secured loans, there are better chances of getting loan. Frequent foreclosure of loans and application of new loans can also bring down your credit score as bankers suspect that you may be using the money for speculative investment or for buying stocks. Credit scoring

is not limited to banks. Mobile phone companies, insurance companies, landlords, and government departments employ the same techniques. A credit information company computes credit score, which is a three-digit number withinthe range of 300 and 900. Higher the score more the chances of getting a loan on favourable interest rates. A good score alone does not mean a person can get the loan he wants. Bankers also look at the status of previous loans and the payment history on such loans. A previously settled or a written off loan is likely to impair the ability to avail more loans.

This year, Cochin witnessed its largest ever photo walk with over 200 shutterbugs both young and old participating with equal vigour. The event was coordinated by Viewfinders on 29th June 2013. The event “click” started by 3:00 pm from Marine drive leading through Broadway and Market Road. It was the third largest photo walk of the 2013

G+ celebration. The idea of a photo walk is to boost creativity through movement and exposure to changing surroundings. You can wander streets you’re familiar with, or explore an area that is brand new to you. The whole point is to get you out there, exploring your surroundings, exercising your creativity and taking pictures. Viewfinder was founded in 2010 by 7 friends with the aim of promoting photography. The group focuses on sharing photography related tips and tricks and guiding people in this art. They also conduct regular photo walks and exhibitions in the city. From merely a handful it is now approximately 3000 members strong spread across the country and still growing.
